Abstract:
The aims of the study were to examine the test–retest reliability of force-time (F-T) characteristics and F-T curve waveform of bilateral and unilateral countermovement jumps (CMJ) in elite youth soccer players and to evaluate the effects of competitive match-play on CMJ performance. 16 male youth soccer players completed CMJs on two separate occasions to determine reliability, and immediately pre, post and 48 h following a competitive match. Coefficient of variation (CV%), Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and limits of agreement were used to assess reliability of discreate CMJ variables. Single factor repeated measures ANOVA were used to determine the effects of match play. Statistical parametric mapping was used to evaluate the repeatability of the CMJ force-time waveform and the effects of match play. Jump height had limited reliability in all three jumps and only a select few jump specific F-T variables were found to be reliable (CV < 10%, ICC > 0.5). Select variables were reduced immediately post game but recovered 48 h post game. The F-T curve waveform was found to be repeatable but did not differ following match-play. This study suggest that select F-T variables change following match-play and may be suitable tools to allow practitioners to detect decrements in performance. These data may help inform practitioners to use the most appropriate F-T variables to assess fatigue and recovery, with implications for performance and injury risk.

Abstract:
Different empirical studies show that the effect of mutual coupling and the random position and orientation of tag antennas in a reduced volume result in a degradation of key performance indicators of an RFID system such as the read-range and the read-rate. This thesis takes part in the performance analysis of such an RFID system by exploring the physical phenomena behind the degradation and by introducing statistical techniques into investigations. Prior to the group behaviour investigations, the sensitivity and the impedance of two RFID chips (Higgs-3 and Higgs-9) have been measured. Two RFID tags have been used, a commercial one (ALN-9662) associated with the Higgs-3 chip and a home-made tag, which has been fabricated in laboratory to match the Higgs-9 chip. The read range of both tags has measured along with their antenna impedance. The measurement results have been confronted to electromagnetic simulations. In order to study various cases involving randomly positioned tags, an electromagnetic model and simulation tools (HFSS and NEC) have been used and the conclusions are based on their results while cross-validated in a few cases by measurements. To simplify any further, the RFID tags are modelled by a set of half-wave dipoles, with and without T-match, and the reader is replaced by a plane wave. The objective is to confront the behaviour of a single isolated tag to that of the same tag while surrounded by other tags and to conclude on the impact of the antenna type, the density of tags, the terminating load and the wave polarisation on the output under observation. The RFID link is studied through its forward and reverse links and by using a conventional grid model for tags including coupling. A thorough power budget analysis is conducted and the absorbed power at the level of the loads (chips) and the reradiated power at the level of the antennas are assessed. Regarding the forward link, the ratio of the absorbed power by the chip of a surrounded tag to that of an isolated tag is called normalised absorbed power and constitutes a useful tool to estimate the percentage of inactivated tags in the set. Regarding the reverse link, the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of loaded antennas with short-circuit and matched loads have been studied. The differential RCS of the isolated tag and that of the surrounded one has also been evaluated and the impact of coupling on the backscattered power have been studied. As in a high-density random context, predicting the system performances in a realistic way with a deterministic approach is impossible, several configurations of randomly positioned and oriented tags and dipoles have been simulated and the conclusions are drawn using statistical analysis. In other words, at the end of this study, the performance degradation of a particular tag in a given configuration of surrounding tags needs to be evaluated individually but the statistical moments as well as cumulative distribution functions allow to predict the behaviour of a population tags under given conditions. This thesis helps the RFID designer to assess the performance of an RFID scenario and eventually adjust some input parameters such as the density of tags in order to attain the desired objectives

Abstract:
The performance of commercial Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags is primarily limited by present techniques used for tag antenna design. Currently, industry techniques rely on identifying the RFID tag application (books, clothing, etc.) and then building antenna prototypes of different configurations in order to satisfy minimum read range requirements. However, these techniques inherently lack an electromagnetic basis and are unable to provide a low cost solution to the tag antenna design process. RFID tag performance characteristics (read-range, chip-antenna impedance matching, surrounding environment) can be very complex, and a thorough understanding of the RFID tag antenna design may be gained through an electromagnetic approach in order to reduce the tag antenna size and the overall cost of the RFID system. The research presented in this thesis addresses RFID tag antenna design process for passive RFID tags. With the growing number of applications (inventory, supply-chain, pharmaceuticals, etc), the proposed RFID antenna design process demonstrates procedures to design tag antennas for such applications. Electrical/geometrical properties of the antennas designed were investigated with the help of computer electromagnetic simulations in order to achieve optimal tag performance criteria such as read range, chip-impedance matching, antenna efficiency, etc. Experimental results were performed on the proposed antenna designs to compliment computer simulations and analytical modelling.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the in-duct experimental methods for determining aeroacoustic N-ports of in-duct elements are discussed and improved. The scattering matrix determination methods and the related wave decomposition methods are evaluated from measurements in an empty duct carrying a mean flow. The improvements of a new over-determination method for the source part of the N-port is studied using simulations and measurements; in quiescent air as well as measurements of the flow associated noise of a mixer plate, here a triangular plate inserted at an angle in a duct. The new method is shown to improve suppression of random errors while no improvement is achieved for bias errors.   Further, the methods are applied in the study of two different aeroacoustic phenomena; one is the effect on the flow associated noise of the triangular plate achieved by varying the bending stiffness. For the most resilient plate tested, it is observed that when the Strouhal number of the flow noise coalesce with the Helmholtz number of a specific eigen-mode of the plate, the noise is drastically dampened. There is also a weaker broad band effect.   The other phenomena studied is the amplification and attenuation obtained for sound waves propagating in a T-junction of rectangular ducts. It is found that by adding only 10% of inflow in the side branch relative to that in the main branch, the amplification is heavily increased. By adding another 10% the amplification is again similar to that of no side branch flow. Adding further flow lessens the effects still.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AT -variety is an algebraic variety endowed with an effective action of an algebraic toms T. This thesis is devoted to the study of two aspects of normal affine T-varieties: the additive group actions and the characterization of singularities. Let X=spec A be a normal affine T-variety and let D be a homogeneous locally nilpotent derivation on the normal affine Z"n-graded domain A, so that D generates an action of the additive group on X. We provide a complete classification of pairs (X,D) in three cases: for toric varieties, in the case where the complexity is one, and in the case where D is of fiber type. As an application, we compute the homogeneous Makar-Limanov (ML) invariant of such varieties. We deduce that any variety with trivial ML-invariant is birationally decomposable as Y\times P"2, for sorne variety Y. Conversely, given a variety Y, there exists an affine T-variety X with trivial ML invariant birational to Y\times P"2. Ln the second part concerning singularities of a T-variety X we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when a T-variety has rational singularities. We also provide a condition for a T-variety to be Cohen¬Macaulay. As an application, we characterize quasihomogeneous elliptic singularities of surfaces

Abstract:
AbstractProbabilistic recurrence relations (PRRs) are a standard formalism for describing the runtime of a randomized algorithm. Given a PRR and a time limit $$\kappa $$ κ , we consider the tail probability $$\Pr [T \ge \kappa ]$$ Pr [ T ≥ κ ] , i.e., the probability that the randomized runtime T of the PRR exceeds $$\kappa $$ κ . Our focus is the formal analysis of tail bounds that aims at finding a tight asymptotic upper bound $$u \ge \Pr [T\ge \kappa ]$$ u ≥ Pr [ T ≥ κ ] . To address this problem, the classical and most well-known approach is the cookbook method by Karp (JACM 1994), while other approaches are mostly limited to deriving tail bounds of specific PRRs via involved custom analysis. In this work, we propose a novel approach for deriving the common exponentially-decreasing tail bounds for PRRs whose preprocessing time and random passed sizes observe discrete or (piecewise) uniform distribution and whose recursive call is either a single procedure call or a divide-and-conquer. We first establish a theoretical approach via Markov’s inequality, and then instantiate the theoretical approach with a template-based algorithmic approach via a refined treatment of exponentiation. Experimental evaluation shows that our algorithmic approach is capable of deriving tail bounds that are (i) asymptotically tighter than Karp’s method, (ii) match the best-known manually-derived asymptotic tail bound for QuickSelect, and (iii) is only slightly worse (with a $$\log \log n$$ log log n factor) than the manually-proven optimal asymptotic tail bound for QuickSort. Moreover, our algorithmic approach handles all examples (including realistic PRRs such as QuickSort, QuickSelect, DiameterComputation, etc.) in less than 0.1 s, showing that our approach is efficient in practice.

Abstract:
Abstract The understanding of how the microstructure influences the mechanical response is an essential pre-requisite for materials tailored to match specific requirements. The aim of this chapter is to further this understanding in the context of Mg-PSZ-TRIP-steel composites on three different scales using a set of methods ranging from phase-field simulations over micromechanics to continuum constitutive modeling. On the microscale, using a Ginzburg-Landau type phase-field model the effects of cooling- and stress-induced martensitic phase transformation in MgO-PSZ is clearly distinguished. Additionally with this method the role of energy barrier in variant selection and the effect of residual stress contributing to the stability of the tetragonal phase are also investigated. On the mesomechanical scale, an analytical 2D model for the martensitic phase transformation and self-accommodation of inclusions within linear elastic materials has been successfully developed. The influences of particle size and geometry, chemical driving force, temperature and surface energy on the $$t \rightarrow m$$ t → m transformation are investigated in a thermostatic approach. On the continuum scale, a continuum material model for transformation plasticity in partially stabilized zirconia ceramics has been developed. Nonlinear hardening behavior, hysteresis and monoclinic phase fraction during a temperature cycle are analyzed. Finally, The mechanical properties of a TRIP steel matrix reinforced by ZrO$$_2$$ 2 particles are analyzed on representative volume elements. Here the mechanical properties of the composite as function of volume fraction of both constituents and the strength of the interface are studied.

Abstract:
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) T 23 standard provides instructions for making and curing concrete test specimens in the field. However, further research is needed to compare the strength of the field-cured specimen with the strength of the actual in-place concrete item. The purpose of this research is to build an understanding of the current state of the practice for field-curing methods. Specifically, the research team conducted a literature review and questionnaire survey to identify the selection criteria and details of field-curing methods. The results of the literature data and survey outcomes indicate most transportation agencies use field-cured cylinders, followed by the maturity method, to decide when to open pavement to traffic or remove formwork or falsework. The most commonly used field method found among transportation agencies was curing the test specimens near (or on) the cast concrete in the same manner as the concrete item represented. The cylindrical specimens are mostly field cured in insulated boxes such as a cooler or under burlap/insulation near the concrete item. In contrast, beams are mostly field cured in a damp sandpit or under burlap/insulation near the concrete item. Other field-curing technologies used by agencies are match curing, SureCureTM cylinder-mold system, piezoelectric sensors, calorimetry, and penetration-resistance tests.

Abstract:
ALKOR cruise AL590 took place as part of the project CONMAR (https://conmarmunition.eu/) which is part of the DAM mission sustainMare (https://www.sustainmare.de/). It was the continuation of the munition monitoring started within the BMBF‐funded project UDEMM (Environmental Monitoring for the Delaboration of Munition in the Sea; https://udemm.geomar.de/), the EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries Fund) ‐funded projects BASTA (Boost Applied munition detection through Smart data detection in and AI workflows; https://www.basta‐munition.eu) and ExPloTect (Ex‐situ, near‐real‐time detection compound detection in seawater). ALKOR worked for two weeks in the Baltic Sea in the munition dumpsites Kolberger Heide, Falshöft, in Lübeck Bight and west of Rügen. Munition sites were mapped via hydroacoustic (multibeam and synthetic aperture sonar) and visual (ROV and towed camera) methods. Water samples were taken for explosive- type compounds and eDNA analysis and sediment samples for macro faunal distribution studies. A change of crew happened on 24th March in Neustadt i.H. with support of the Coast Guard t of the federal police.
