Abstract:
Neuropsychological testing has been used in a wide range of applications across military settings, including the selection of personnel to engage in covert operations, battlefield assessment and rehabilitation following blast exposure, traumatic brain injury, other neurological conditions and assessment of malingering. Over recent decades, military psychologists have helped to shape the advances in assessing and remediating the psychological sequela that is associated with operationally related neurological and other physical injuries. This paper will present an overview of some of the neuropsychological and related services within the UK Armed Forces, which are provided to service personnel with traumatic brain and other physical injuries.

Africa, Adelene R. "An analysis of psychological and legal conceptions of the defence of non-pathological criminal incapacity." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13901.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 59-62.
The defence of non-pathological capacity presents challenges for both law and psychology because it acknowledges that psychological factors other than mental illness, are grounds for complete exculpation. In this sense, South African law differs from its Anglo-American counterparts as it recognises that non-pathological factors playa role in negating criminal responsibility. Legal and mental health professionals are instrumental in the application of the defence, but both case law and literature reflect differences in the way in which the defence is understood and applied. Disagreement within and between disciplines adds to the controversial nature of the defence. This study examines the interpretation and practical application of the defence by mental health professionals and lawyers. It explores how participants' understanding of the defence informs its application in practice. A sample of ten participants including mental health professionals (comprising psychologists and psychiatrists) and lawyers (comprising advocates) was chosen, in order that a comparison be drawn between the two groups. Semi-structured interviews were conducted so as to enable in-depth exploration of issues regarding conceptions of criminal responsibility, the role of expert testimony and the conceptual understanding and application of the defence.

Robinson, Natasha M. "Comparing the Lived Experience of Men and Women Bereaved by Stillbirth: A Meta- Synthesis of Qualitative Studies." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/131814.

Full text
Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
Stillbirth rates in Australia have remained stable in the past 20 years, with some 2,000 families affected each year. Despite this, research into the multi-dimensional impact of stillbirth remains limited. Most research to date focusses on the immediate needs of bereaved mothers, particularly grief and the response of health professionals in hospital settings. What is needed from research is a deeper understanding of the impact of stillbirth on fathers, siblings, grandparents, family systems, mental health, relationships, employment and workplace productivity. The relationship between the experience of stillbirth and social constructs, gender, parenting, stigma and attachment also requires closer attention. Surprisingly, the economic impact of stillbirth is poorly described. The direct and indirect costs of stillbirth in Australia from 2016-2020 is estimated to sum $681 million highlighting the need for action to reduce stillbirth and its devastating and pervasive impacts on those bereaved, and Australian society.

Palumbo, Lisa. "The impact of mental health, service and transition factors on civilian unemployment in transitioned Australian Defence Force members." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/131444.

Abstract:

The transition from military to civilian life can be challenging for many service members as they learn to cope with changes in their vocational and personal identity, relationships and differences in civilian workplace expectations. Compared with their civilian peers, veterans are more likely to exhibit greater mental health symptomology. The presence of mental health conditions has been found to exacerbate adjustment difficulties, impacting on civilian reintegration and employment outcomes. Further exploration of the facilitators and barriers impacting transition success is needed to better support our veterans.

Velissaris, Vasiliki. "The effect of exposure to parodies of thin-ideal images on women’s body image, body shame and mood." Thesis, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2440/133994.

Full text
Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
Social networking sites are abundant with thin-ideal beauty standards for women. As a result, some users are challenging these unrealistic ideals in creative, humorous ways. The aim of the present study was to experimentally investigate the effect of exposure to humorous, parody images on women’s body dissatisfaction, body shame and mood. Participants were 173 women aged between 18 and 61 years, who were randomly assigned to view either one of three sets of Instagram images: thin-ideal celebrity posts; humorous parody images of the celebrity post paired with the thin-ideal; or the humorous parody post alone. Results indicated that exposure to the parody images alone decreased body dissatisfaction, body shame and negative mood, relative to exposure of thin-ideal images alone. Moreover, exposure to the parody images alone resulted in less body dissatisfaction than exposure to parody images paired with the thin-ideal image. The findings were moderated by trait thin-ideal internalisation, whereby individuals with high thin-ideal internalisation experienced less body dissatisfaction after viewing parody images alone, compared to the paired parody and thinideal images. Overall, the findings contribute to existing literature by providing support for the use of humorous parody images for decreasing body dissatisfaction, body shame and negative mood in women.

Lontos, Eleanor. "Personality Traits and Self-Forgiveness: Exploring the roles of Authentic and Hubristic Pride." Thesis, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2440/133987.

Full text
Abstract:

Whilst the empirical exploration of forgiveness has grown extensively over the past 30 years, the study of self-forgiveness remains a relatively new topic of interest. Furthermore, few studies have sought to explain how individual difference variables relate to dispositional self-forgiveness. The aim of the present study was to explore how the two facets of pride (authentic and hubristic) relate to and predict our current understandings of self-forgiveness. A secondary aim of this study was to confirm previous findings on shame and guilt-proneness and determine whether pride is still related to self-forgiveness after controlling for these two variables. A convenience sample of 206 participants aged between 18 and 50+ years were recruited from the University of Adelaide first-year psychology pool and through advertising on Facebook and the Relationships Australia database. Participants completed an online questionnaire that measured self-forgiveness and various personality variables. Quantitative analysis involved Pearson’s correlations and conducting three hierarchical multiple regressions. Results indicated that hubristic pride was a significant predictor of genuine self-forgiveness, with authentic pride approaching the borderline of significance. Both pride variables explained an additional 2.90% of the variation in genuine self-forgiveness, with authentic pride being positively related and hubristic pride being negatively related. The results of the present study highlight the impact of dispositional pride as a useful explanatory concept for understanding how individuals perceive, reflect, and move towards the process of genuine self-forgiveness after committing a transgression.

Abstract:

The aim of this review is to summarise and critique current knowledge in psychology on Major Depressive Disorder and its associated symptoms throughout adolescence. Depression occurring during this critical period of vulnerability is associated with the risk of long-term negative consequences at both subclinical and diagnostic levels. The progression of depression symptom development, differences in symptom presentation, overall trends in population prevalence, and heterogeneity in longitudinal patterns are examined. Methodological challenges in conducting surveys and longitudinal research with adolescent populations are discussed, and recommendations for future research are made in light of their application in developing and strengthening intervention programs

Green, Racquel. "A systematic review and investigation of avatar- and self-related processes and problematic gaming." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/131397.

Full text
Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
Many games feature avatars that enable adoption of, and experimentation with, roles and identities. How avatar- and self-related processes develop and maintain gaming disorder (GD) is unclear. This review examined 18 quantitative studies of avatar- and self-related concepts and problematic gaming, including 13 survey-based and 5 neuroimaging studies. Survey-based studies consistently reported that negative self-concept, avatar identification, and large self-avatar discrepancies were associated with problematic gaming. Poor selfconcept appears to be a GD risk factor. Further research should explain how avatars relate to GD’s addictive mechanisms (e.g., cognitive distortions, reward-seeking), amid calls for GDrelated interventions to focus on avatar identification.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Reactions to stressful experiences’ covers emotional and physiological elements of the response to stress and the way in which maladaptive coping patterns and inappropriate defence mechanisms can lead to clinical disorders. Stress reactions are often short-lived and respond to support from friends and family. However, particularly severe stresses can lead to the condition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an important source of morbidity and disability, whose clinical features, psychology, neurobiology, and treatment are described in detail. The chapter also covers adjustment to threatening and traumatic life events, such as childhood abuse, sexual assault in women, the refugee experience, serious physical illness, and bereavement. These events can produce various kinds of adverse psychological consequences over the lifespan, and the chapter shows how these psychiatric sequelae can be recognized, theoretically understood, and best managed according to current evidence-based practice.
