Abstract:
A comprehensive environmental modelling study has been carried out to support the Istanbul Master Plan Study reviewing the waste water strategy for the period up to year 2030, at which time the sewerage system is expected to be extended to serve about 20 million people. Already today the local marine areas suffer from pollution effects caused by sewage discharge. The affected areas in particular are the Bosphorus Strait and the Bosphorus Strait-Sea of Marmara junction area, which are also the natural receiving waters for the sewage from the planned new development areas of Istanbul. The general conditions of the entire Sea of Marmara are also of concern. The object of the study was to determine the effects of the waste water effluent on the marine system and to evaluate alternative plans for sewage treatment and location of outfalls. An advanced 3-Dimensional model of the Black Sea-Bosphorus Strait-Marmara Sea junction area has been set-up and used for studying the immediate effects on oxygen conditions for a two week long design period. A 3-Dimensional model has been set up for the Sea of Marmara with the purpose of studying the effects of eutrophication over a one year period, which is necessary in order to describe the processes involved. These models are based on SYSTEM 3, a general modelling system for baroclinic flow, including modules describing water quality and biological/eutrophication processes. The various loading scenarios evaluated included variation in outfall location horizontally and vertically, e.g. in top layer versus halocline or bottom layer trapping and variation in treatment strategy, e.g. no treatment, biological and tertiary treatment.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Casualty response must be a team effort if it is to be successful. Equally, the hard decisions must be taken by the Salvage Master at the scene. This paper considers the ways in which the objectives of integrated response and efficient command decision making can be achieved in a spill situation. The paper reviews the role of the Salvage Master, salvage strategies that aim to keep the pollutant in the ship, the integration of command and control functions in the light of the Salvage Master's central position, the questions surrounding responder liability, new developments in salvage contracts, and the role of the P&I Club in relation to the salvage function. The paper explores these issues by reviewing a series of major salvage cases, including the Sea Empress, Nassia, and Nakhodka. The case studies provide an overview of each operation, consider the command and control issues and set out the lessons for the handling of future operations.

Abstract:
Maurice Strong's UN environment conference in Stockholm, 1972, provided international legitimacy for environmental concerns. From that springboard a number of Australian universities established the nation's first environmental studies programs, all Masters degrees. Ten years later Monash University made its program's first and only substantial transformation, a formal obligatory (‘core’) introduction to transdisciplinary thinking. This special sectionof the AJEE offers six examples of student writings from that attempt. They are drawn from the work of the year 1999 students who undertook part 1 of the three part core subject Systems Thinking and Practice. In 1979, seven years after its commencement, an Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Master of Environmental Science Program at Monash University proposed to ‘integrate the diversity of subjects that comprise the core’ and to minimise the ‘dangers of superficiality … and narrow specialisation’. No further guidance was given as to what this meant nor how it was to be done. Nevertheless, from this seed began the intellectual transformation the program. No additional funding was provided. The project was simply supported by the good will of staff from various faculties. To date a thousand students have wrestled with the new program in one form or another.

Abstract:
The Master Gardener program in Monmouth County began in 1999. In order to justify the initiation of such a time and resource intensive program for Rutgers Univ., detailed records of participant activities throughout the county were compiled. The educational program consists of several components related to horticultural science. These classroom topics are basic horticulture, environmental factors for plant growth, soils and fertilizers, plant propagation, vegetable gardening, integrated pest management, turfgrass systems and practical horticultural techniques. Since 1999, 145 graduates have passed through the program and contributed a total of 35,274 volunteer hours. The key horticultural program segments that result in direct return on this substantial investment include: 1) horticultural helpline—answering home gardening questions; 2) horticultural help—promoting gardening programs in schools, parks, etc; 3) Community outreach—lectures and demonstrations, hort therapy; 4) horticultural research at university extension and education farms; and 5) laboratory assistance - plant and pest identification, test measurements. The calculated value of such volunteer help at $15.43 per hour leads to a horticultural contribution of $544,277 over 5 years. It is important to realize that many key programs would not have even been initiated without the ability to quickly assemble large numbers of skilled volunteers on a part-time basis. The training program and hands-on experience made these Master Gardeners capable of detailed data collection from ornamental and agricultural plant studies. This impact expands and synergizes the plant science programs of the professional staff on both a county and statewide basis.

Rapson, Jeffrey William 1971. "Private wilderness playgrounds : understanding the competitive effects of environmentally oriented master-planned communities." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/32221.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. and M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 175-178).
The thesis of this work is to better understand the competitive effects of developing second-home master-planned communities in an environmentally oriented fashion. The competitive effects, are understood by examining the "traditional" land development approach and comparing it to the approach used in two case studies in this research-Spring Island and Dewees island. These measurements and comparisons are used to understand and nform the effectiveness of an environmentally-oriented development approach, whereby these development strategies can be put forth and adopted as an approach to create value in future residential developments. The study derives its information from personal interviews and secondary research on the two developments. The research then presents a comprehensive synopsis of the competitive strategies so that the subtle relationships between consumer preferences, development risks, and market feasibility can be better understood. This thesis is intended to better inform community developers of the benefits, financial and otherwise, that one can capture through a whole-systems approach to master-planned community development. A whole-systems approach to residential development is defined by taking the three primary drivers for decision-making, economics, community and environment, and actively considering the interconnections between the systems in a balanced orientation. This concept is often referred to as the 'solutions multiplier' effect. This thesis finds that residential community developers in the South Carolina Low Country secondhome market can generate significant premiums and differentiate their communities in a highly competitive marketplace, while making better decisions that are more responsive to a project's social, aesthetic, environmental, and economic site through a whole-systems market-based development approach. It will be shown that bringing these three primary drivers together and capitalizing on their interconnections has realized multiple benefits over their competition while creating a new community development prototype.

Grimaldi, Jordan. "The Living Community Challenge: An unCase Study in Biophilic Master Planning." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2020. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/219.

Abstract:
In a world that is quickly urbanizing with a climate that is rapidly changing, the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Living Community Challenge (LCC) offers a whimsical yet highly relevant model for sustainable development—creating cities that are as connected and beautiful as forests. As no certified Living Community exists yet, this thesis serves as an “uncase study” of North Rainier, a neighborhood in Seattle that has registered for the Challenge. In an effort to assess the LCC’s perceived effectiveness as a model for sustainable development, this thesis first summarizes nearly 400 centuries of U.S. developmental history to give greater context to the current moment and how we can quickly, effectively, and fundamentally transform the built environment to support a more sustainable future. A comparative analysis with EcoDistricts and LEED for Neighborhood Development revealed strengths (i.e., advocacy and capacity building) and weaknesses (i.e., equity and stasis) of predominant urban assessment tools in the U.S. The case study then uses a combination of GIS analysis, community surveys, and semi-structured interviews with members of the neighborhood association overseeing the pursuit of the LCC in North Rainier as well as with staff members at ILFI to assess the LCC’s effectiveness. Environmental health disparities in North Rainier found within the GIS analysis were echoed in the surveys and interviews, which indicated feelings of neglect from the city of Seattle who is occupied with record-setting growth, demonstrates how the LCC can be considered as an “act of optimism” and as a rejection of historically imposed top-down planning. Overall, in theory, several of the LCC’s Petals address many of the systemic issues facing the built environment (i.e., sprawl and dependence on automobiles and fossil fuels). However, despite its vision for a socially just and culturally rich future, the LCC—specifically the Equity Petal—does not offer a guarantee that displacement of low-income and communities of color and/or environmental injustices will not be perpetuated.

Abstract:
The Cal Poly Pier (Pier) Master/Facility Plan (FP) document provides the vision of the future for the Pier, a marine science research facility. The Plan facilitates project development and management of the Pier while meeting university and department research goals. Specifically, the FP document establishes goals and strategies to direct long-term development of the Pier, streamlines agency approval and permit requirements, provides context for pier management, and assists the permitting process for future development as it relates to regulatory permits and programmatic growth on the Cal Poly Pier to help meet goals of the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences (CCMS). The Cal Poly Pier is the marine field station for the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) CCMS and is one of several facilities that supports research and educational activities. The CCMS is a CSU Campus Center research organization that provides research and education activities as a part of Cal Poly’s overall mission while offering opportunities to interested parties beyond Cal Poly, such as private and public entities. The 3,057-foot long pier provides students, faculty, researchers, and other users unrivaled access to the marine environment of the Central Coast and fosters hands-on learning opportunities to progress marine research and science. The Master Plan name was changed to Facility Plan to streamline the plan approval process and to minimize the potential for errors.

Abstract:
To achieve true sustainability, planners must balance the interests of environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. In a critically changing, complex ecosystem such as Louisiana’s coast, challenges to achieve the perfect equilibrium are further compounded. Following the logic of emerging adaptive co-management literature, the planning framework for Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan could be transformed into a more collaborative, democratic process. Adaptive co-management is a regime which provides power to local citizens, often in possession of invaluable traditional ecological knowledge. In general, it focuses on constant learning and collaboration. Through power-sharing and participatory action, we embrace science, but step back from technocracy. We utilize local knowledge, and combine it with expertise.

Abstract:
Educating the workforce of the future to perform adeptly in the global environment as well as to surmount cross cultural boundaries is of a paramount necessity in today’s technologically advanced and complex settings. This environment has led institutions of higher education to seek international collaborations to face these challenges. Building on experiences and successes gained from a nearly decade long project entitled UMANE that was jointly supported by both the US Department of Education and the EU for undergraduate double/triple Bachelor’s degrees, this paper reports on an extension of the earlier partnership, to include a graduate level partnership that offers a double master degree between New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and University of Parma (UNIPR) that was put in place in 2015. In this work, we present the developed framework of this international cooperation, report on its challenges, and share our experiences. Specifically, the framework of the agreement establishes guidelines and course of study leading to double master degrees in the area of Engineering Management, one from NJIT and another from Parma University. Students in this program, usually, start their studies in Italy, attending the classes at their home Institution and then move to Newark, New Jersey, during the spring/second semester (6 months) of their first year, to attend NJIT classes. At the end of their studies, students will be awarded two master’s degrees in Engineering Management from the partnering universities.

Abstract:
Barbara van den Broek (1932-2001) trained as an architect in Auckland, New Zealand before moving to Brisbane with her husband and fellow architect Joop, where they established an architectural practice. van den Broek went on to run an office as a sole practitioner and took on architecture and landscape architecture projects. Over the course of her career she completed post-graduate diplomas in Town and Country Planning, Landscape Architecture and Education, and a Master of Science – Environmental Studies, and collaborated on a number of key projects in Queensland and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Our paper will build an account of her career. In assessing the significance of her contribution to landscape architecture, planning and architecture in Australasia, it will bring a number of other spheres into the frame: conservation and Australia’s environment movement; landscape design and the bush garden; and van den Broek’s personal development that included artistic expression, single parenthood, teaching, and the navigation of male-dominated professional environments to develop a practice that contributed to town planning projects in cities across Australia, and made significant contributions to landscape projects in Queensland and PNG.

Abstract:
The Faculty of Agri-food and Environmental Economics is a well-established educational and research leader in Romania in the field of economics, focused on agri-food and environmental sciences. Part of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, the Faculty provides higher education according to the Bologna Process, consisting of three-cycle higher education systems: bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies. With many economists professionally trained over the years and with a group of professors focused on research activities with impactful contributions in the field of agri-food and environmental economics, it has become important to study the evolution of research interests manifested in the research papers elaborated by the tenured teaching staff of the Faculty of Agri-food and Environmental Economics. This research paper aims at highlighting the emerging research interests using a quantitative method: bibliometry, a branch of scientometry, based on the scientific papers indexed in the Web of Science until 20 September 2020. The main findings in this paper refer to the fact that waste management, food safety, carbon emissions and decision-making are the topics most frequently approached in the scientific papers indexed in the 2018-2020 period, while topics such as: land-use, agricultural insurance, ecosystems, water, marketing-research are specific to the 2012-2014 period.

Abstract:
The importance of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the curriculum of all the bachelor and master degrees at UPC has been legally and institutionally recognised. At the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering, issues such as professional ethics, environmental impacts of infrastructures, respect for cultural diversity and gender perspective are currently cross-cutting competences highlighted and stated in the study plans as a transversal competence on Sustainability and Social Commitment (S&SC). However, its effective implementation requires significant teaching efforts in order to adapt academic curricula, so far limited to individual non- coordinated initiatives. The launch of the “ODS-Camins Toolkit” project (Toolkit for the Promotion of SDG in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Fields) seeks to encourage the implementation of teaching innovation practices that contribute to the deployment and assessment of S&CS competences. The aim of the project is to exchange experiences, develop new practices, and draft a common pathway for the promotion and implementation of the SDGs in the field of civil and environmental engineering studies. The paper will explain the experience of this one-year project, highlighting barriers, challenges, and sharing the lessons learned with the final purpose of involving all the community in the years to come. It will also present the Toolkit for the Promotion of SDGs in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Fields

Abstract:
We present the Machine Teaching, an online learning environment with two main goals: (1) supporting student practicing and exercise marking; and most important, (2) collecting data on students’ knowledge while they progress. Machine teaching was key to bringing programming courses to online learning during the 2020 pandemic, helping educators provide a safe and smooth online practice environment for students and helping them to master programming skills in early stages of their bachelor’s degree studies, a skill that increases the possibilities for immediate job placement. In addition, the educational data collected are mined and used to support short- and long-term pedagogical decision-making, allowing for a quick feedback and enabling material adaptations for the classes offered in the remote mode.

"Sustainable landfill fine fraction of waste reuse opportunities covering layer development." In Research for Rural Development 2021 : annual 27th International scientific conference proceedings. Abstract:
Resources are lost in dumps from the time civilization knows itself. Solid waste handling through ‘zero waste’ concept is important for disposed waste reuse/recycling. The challenge for future is landfill mining (LFM) – one of the approaches dealing with that approach. We can think of recycling of valuable components such as plastic, metals and even rare soil elements if we have the right technology. Fine fraction of waste derived from excavated, separated and screened waste is also a perspective of circular economy as this inert fraction may serve as methane degradation layer for covering the old as well as new landfills. It may reduce harmful CH4 emissions and diminish the raw material use for closure of dumping sites. The aim of this study is to give an outlook on opportunities and describe other benefits for circular economy from innovative construction technology of cover layer. Rejected material may contain up to 40–60% of dump site/landfill mass and we may have interest in: 1) estimation of fine fraction of waste as functional construction material; 2) watching environmental effects – possible leaching and emissions; 3) keeping dumpsite revitalization as the master plan idea. First studies revealed the potential of fine fraction of dumpsite material for sustainable covering layer development. This study is supported by the project No.1.1.1.2/VIAA/3/19/531 ‘Innovative technologies for stabilization of landfills – diminishing environmental impact and resources potential in frames of circular economy'.

Abstract:
Autonomous vehicles are a subject of intense research interest, and are being approached by many researchers in different ways. Some of these approaches are based upon pure simulation, while others involve investigations using hardware. One possible approach, which can be useful when investigating how autonomous vehicles might interact, involves the use of physical scaled model vehicles, and the development of an appropriate vehicle is the focus of this paper. For this purpose, a commercially available 1:18 radio controlled car is remodeled and modified. An onboard microcontroller unit (MCU) is used for sensor data acquisition and preliminary signal conditioning as well as actuator control. The sensor array includes a gyroscope/accelerometer, a compass and speed encoder to find the angular and linear position of the car in a local coordinate frame as well as a range finder to detect impending obstacles in the vehicle’s planned path. This information is sent over a serial communication protocol to a Master station via a 2.4 GHz wireless module. The master station consists of a National Instruments (NI) myRIO real-time FPGA module where the local coordinates are used to formulate the position of the car in global coordinates and a user defined control scheme is implemented and the appropriate actuator signal is sent back wirelessly to the MCU on the car. The main purpose of using an independent and offsite control station is to isolate the main processing and increase response speed to changing environmental factors. Furthermore, the myRIO contains the dynamic model of the car which can be modified by linking it to a personal computer station running the LabVIEW graphic user interface (GUI). This adds greater flexibility to the overall system, thus allowing the user to focus on the different control schemes to be implemented through the hardware setup. This setup will be replicated for more cars, set in an urban traffic environment, and the interactions between the cars can then be studied and optimized.

Abstract:
Abstract. The study mainly explores the main characteristics, existing problems and corresponding solutions of Sino-foreign cooperative education in cultivating intercultural communication talents. It adopts exploratory analysis and case studies through data collected principally from QMUL Engineering School, NPU and Glasgow College, UESTC. It is found that students in Sino-foreign cooperative education have strong intercultural communication competence since they have: 1) a good master of foreign language; 2) more opportunities to communicate and exchange with foreigners; 3) strong acceptance towards multi-cultures; 4) strong initiative and practical-ness to work or study abroad. However, problems and challenges exist, such as poor language output, superficial intercultural communication and unstable intercultural communicative approach. It is suggested to adopt diversified assessment modes, create an intercultural communicative environment and build an intercultural assistant mechanism to comprehensively promote the cultivation of intercultural communication talents in Sino-foreign cooperative education.
