Wendt, Michael George. "Eastern Seaport Master Plan." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33164.

Full text
Abstract:
The “Eastern Seaport Master Plan” is the design of a mixed-use neighborhood in South Boston, a site that has an enormous amount of potential to be the pinnacle of the Boston waterfront. Located in the city’s Seaport District, the master plan addresses the site’s deterioration as industry has declined. By reducing the impact of the necessity of the car through its incorporation into the urban fabric, making use of the road’s infrastructure, creating a clear distinction between the functions of long-term and short-term parking, capitalizing on the opportunity to be the city’s hub for water transit, and designing a street front for the mixed-use city blocks that encourages street life in Boston’s harsh climate, the master plan will create a dynamic urban neighborhood that functions as its own entity but ties back to Boston as part of the city’s call to reclaim the waterfront.

Billimack, Nathaniel Richard. "Vineyard City Church: Building Design and Campus Master Plan." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/146226.

Full text
Abstract:
While I have been at the University of Arizona, the three areas of study I have been most involved in are Architecture, Communication, and Religion. I started attending church for the first time my freshman year at Vineyard City Church in Tucson. As I attended the church, I began to see how the space itself was a large factor not only in the functionality of the church, but in what is communicated about religion, God and the mission of the church itself. It also plays a big role in the structure of the services, activities, and the relationship to the greater Tucson community. Pastor Gary Stokes took over Vineyard City Church about six years ago, when it had a dwindling congregation of about eighteen people. Under new administration, the church stabilized and became highly diverse. It began to grow as a result. When their current home, the former YMCA building was sold and demolished, they were forced to become a load in-load out church based out of mobile minis during the week and Blenman Elementary School on Sunday mornings. As the church grows to a congregation of about 120, it is clear that the building is no longer meeting several functional, relational, and expressional goals. As ministries launch, there is no anchor for the congregation and very little visibility in the community. Since a church building is essentially a tool to minister to the community, a permanent space would allow them to better fulfill their mission statement of showing Jesus' love in word AND deed. The end product of my capstone research and development will be a general master plan and complete building design for Vineyard City Church. The project will ultimately be a balance of religious demonstration, functional necessity, aesthetic attractiveness, social facilitation, and financial consideration so the design is attractive and attainable.

Hilker, Jesse Kirtland. "On Building: A Return of the Master Builder." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91394.

Full text
Abstract:
This project aims to chronicle the process of building from the architects point of view. Not mindless, mechanical tasks aimed at some economic goal; but tangible, thoughtful work towards an educational and philosophical desire. The desire to be a Master-Builder has fueled architects for centuries. It is a role that the common definition of Architect has all but forgotten. While in practice very few of us will continue this tradition, it is important that we not lose this fundamental aspect of building. To begin to fulfill oneself with this title, the path is very simple: build a building. That is what follows in this book. It is a chronological outline of the design and build of the New River Valley Train Observation Tower. An additional layer to this project is the inclusion of a variety of innovative building materials/techniques, particularity the use of hardwood cross-laminated timber (CLT). This building will serve as an ongoing research opportunity to evaluate the conditions of building with this material in an extreme condition, complete exposure to weather. No work of architecture is a solo endeavor, yet my heavy involvement in the design, documentation, and building of the tower has culminated in a body of work that is distinctly my own. My role was that of a project manager, and I reported to faculty Kay Edge, Edward Becker, and Robert Riggs. This structure allowed me to have a great deal of independence, while vetting my drawings and ideas with experienced professionals. A small group of students joined me in the larger aspects of the build, which provided another opportunity to discover an aspect so critical to building: collaboration. This build taught so much about project management, design, and realization that could only be understood through such a physical experience.

Abstract:
This thesis explores through the creation of four artworks, the nature of the sublime ruin. To facilitate this it examines the disintegration of selected religious feminine metaphors. The artworks are rendered through a multiplication of layers bound by translucent/transparent resin. These are produced to examine the potentials between traditional craft and contemporary digital mediums, thus creating sites where eroding fragments may express an excess of meaning through enigmatic construction.

Džigurski, Saša, and Jesper Karbing. "Dark Design Patterns in Coin Master : An In-Depth Game Analysis." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för speldesign, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-416662.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study we will investigate the evolution of manipulative and experientially devaluative business practices in the mobile game industry from the perspective of game designers. The focus will be placed on the use of Dark Design Patterns defined in previous research by Zagal et al. (2013), significant changes since their cataloguing in said study, and the emergence of new ones. To do this, we isolate the different Game Modes of Coin Master and use Formal Analysis to break down various systems and interactions. In order to identify Dark Patterns, we use Zagal et al. (2013) study, supplemented by a list of potentially exploitable cognitive biases found in the work of Mathur et al (2019) as our theoretical framework. We discovered that many of the previously defined Dark Patterns can still be found in Coin master, along with hitherto new and undefined ones, chiefly related to company or developer interests as opposed to the players’. Dark Patterns of monetary and temporal nature appeared to have a close connection as they often manifested together, also commonly underpinned by exploitation of cognitive biases. Our findings are indicative of an increased intensity of predation on players, primarily motivated by monetary gain and to the detriment of player experience.

Grimaldi, Jordan. "The Living Community Challenge: An unCase Study in Biophilic Master Planning." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2020. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/219.

Full text
Abstract:
In a world that is quickly urbanizing with a climate that is rapidly changing, the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Living Community Challenge (LCC) offers a whimsical yet highly relevant model for sustainable development—creating cities that are as connected and beautiful as forests. As no certified Living Community exists yet, this thesis serves as an “uncase study” of North Rainier, a neighborhood in Seattle that has registered for the Challenge. In an effort to assess the LCC’s perceived effectiveness as a model for sustainable development, this thesis first summarizes nearly 400 centuries of U.S. developmental history to give greater context to the current moment and how we can quickly, effectively, and fundamentally transform the built environment to support a more sustainable future. A comparative analysis with EcoDistricts and LEED for Neighborhood Development revealed strengths (i.e., advocacy and capacity building) and weaknesses (i.e., equity and stasis) of predominant urban assessment tools in the U.S. The case study then uses a combination of GIS analysis, community surveys, and semi-structured interviews with members of the neighborhood association overseeing the pursuit of the LCC in North Rainier as well as with staff members at ILFI to assess the LCC’s effectiveness. Environmental health disparities in North Rainier found within the GIS analysis were echoed in the surveys and interviews, which indicated feelings of neglect from the city of Seattle who is occupied with record-setting growth, demonstrates how the LCC can be considered as an “act of optimism” and as a rejection of historically imposed top-down planning. Overall, in theory, several of the LCC’s Petals address many of the systemic issues facing the built environment (i.e., sprawl and dependence on automobiles and fossil fuels). However, despite its vision for a socially just and culturally rich future, the LCC—specifically the Equity Petal—does not offer a guarantee that displacement of low-income and communities of color and/or environmental injustices will not be perpetuated.

BYGGE, MATTIAS, and SOFIE STRAND. "Day Master - Redesigning a planning board for people with cognitive disorder." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-263136.

Full text
Abstract:
In assistive technology, there are mainly two different users that needs to be taken into account when developing products. The first, and most important, is the end-user who requires the product in order to function and live a normal life. The second is the support person who, for some products, needs to assist the end-user by preparing it to be used. This report presents the master thesis project conducted by Mattias Bygge and Sofie Strand at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The client was Abilia, a company that research, develop, manufacture and sell assistive technology to people with impairments. This main goal of this project was to redesign a cognitive planning board. The product is used as a visual aid by people who has difficulties in planning daily activities and keeping track of time. In order to develop the product in a suitable way, a literature study and interviews with Abilia’s employees laid the foundation for the user studies that were conducted with end-users and support people. Several concepts were generated and five were evaluated against the original product and presented to the company. The two concepts that received the highest ranking, (1) Extra Hours and (2) Extra Hours Bistable, were further investigated and were eventually developed into one single hybrid concept. The final design proposal is Day Master, a flexible planning board intended for people with a cognitive impairment that impedes their ability to plan daily activities and keep track of time. The product visually displays time and weekdays by using coloured LED lights, which support people may program without difficulty to fit the end-user’s preference. The amount of hours is changeable with a range of 12-18 hours of daytime and with the remaining hours distributed to night-time. The accessories that have been developed for this products are a simple protective cover, and two holders, one for images and one for whiteboard markers. All accessories attaches to the planning board with magnets.
