Burkett, Brendan J. "An expert system for city building foundation construction." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1990. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36474/1/36474_Burkett_1990_Vol-1.pdf.

Abstract:
The application of Expert Systems in the Geotechnical and Construction fields of Civil Engineering has been investigated and a prototype knowledge based Expert System (SITEPREP) has been developed for site preparation when constructing city building foundations. In developing this system the problems of knowledge acquisition and the selection of a suitable expert system building environment have been investigated. It has been concluded that knowledge acquisition is the most important criterion when developing an expert system. Further, it has been found that the most efficient method to collect expertise is to develop an initial system in-house, then have the experts validate and provide further knowledge for the system. An existing shell (LEONARDO 3 .18) has provided the medium in which to encapsulate the experts' knowledge. This shell has also ensured rapid system development. The various methods of obtaining knowledge, in particular interviewing, are discussed in the thesis. A review of the effects of foundation construction on existing buildings, and the methods of protecting these structures was conducted to provide the documented expertise on which the initial in-house system has been based. Prediction of ground movements due to adj a cent construction is considered and the effects of different soil, shoring and workmanship parameters are combined into one set of "zones of movement" for use in the expert system. The expert system, SITEPREP, has been evaluated by practising construction and geotechnical engineers. The development of this expert system has shown that such systems are possible and justified and particularly appropriate for geotechnical and construction engineering. A number of proposals for future developments are presented.

Abstract:
Increasing speed of networks and worldwide availability has made the World Wide Web the most significant medium for information exchange. Web technologies have become more and more important as large and small businesses continue to make their presence on the web. Today's businesses have more than just a "face" on the worldwide web. The use of a web browser is no longer restricted to viewing static pages. Browsers are becoming more and more a standard interface to a multifaceted reign of programs that live on the worldwide web. Two main technologies stand out for the implementation of web applications, Sun Microsystems' Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Microsoft' Dot Net Framework. The purpose of this study is to provide an unbiased comparison of the two technologies based on performance and other software qualities.

Dzoba, Nicholas. "Investigating Mentors' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Using Resiliency-Building Strategies Within An At-Risk Adolescent Intervention Program." UNF Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/488.

Abstract:
This research study seeks to enhance previous mentoring literature (Converse & Lignugaris, 2008; Cavell, Elledge, Malcolm, & Faith, 2009; Devenport & Lane, 2009) by further identifying the strategies and skills which help mentors form quality relationships and ultimately impact the resilience of at-risk adolescent mentees. Specifically, this study investigates volunteer mentors’ perceptions of incorporating the positive coping strategies of active listening, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and future orientation within the initial stages of the mentoring process. Participants in this study are divided into two groups: the Coping Strategies (CS) Group and the Untrained Group (UG). The CS Group mentors have been individually trained to use the aforementioned coping strategies prior to being matched with mentees. The Untrained Group consists of mentors who received no formal training. Semi-structured interviews, which were conducted between three and four months into each mentoring relationship, reveal that focusing on relationship building and creating a level of comfort and trust with mentees were viewed by mentors from both groups as the paramount objectives during these beginning stages. Active listening is identified by a majority of participants as crucial for establishing a connection between mentor and mentee, building trust within the relationship, and engendering meaningful dialogue during beginning mentor sessions. Ultimately, this study finds that active listening training can be useful for helping mentors establish the foundation for a quality mentoring relationship, as well as for the use of additional coping strategies.

Abstract:
This project aims to chronicle the process of building from the architects point of view. Not mindless, mechanical tasks aimed at some economic goal; but tangible, thoughtful work towards an educational and philosophical desire. The desire to be a Master-Builder has fueled architects for centuries. It is a role that the common definition of Architect has all but forgotten. While in practice very few of us will continue this tradition, it is important that we not lose this fundamental aspect of building. To begin to fulfill oneself with this title, the path is very simple: build a building. That is what follows in this book. It is a chronological outline of the design and build of the New River Valley Train Observation Tower. An additional layer to this project is the inclusion of a variety of innovative building materials/techniques, particularity the use of hardwood cross-laminated timber (CLT). This building will serve as an ongoing research opportunity to evaluate the conditions of building with this material in an extreme condition, complete exposure to weather. No work of architecture is a solo endeavor, yet my heavy involvement in the design, documentation, and building of the tower has culminated in a body of work that is distinctly my own. My role was that of a project manager, and I reported to faculty Kay Edge, Edward Becker, and Robert Riggs. This structure allowed me to have a great deal of independence, while vetting my drawings and ideas with experienced professionals. A small group of students joined me in the larger aspects of the build, which provided another opportunity to discover an aspect so critical to building: collaboration. This build taught so much about project management, design, and realization that could only be understood through such a physical experience.

Billimack, Nathaniel Richard. "Vineyard City Church: Building Design and Campus Master Plan." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/146226.

Full text
Abstract:
While I have been at the University of Arizona, the three areas of study I have been most involved in are Architecture, Communication, and Religion. I started attending church for the first time my freshman year at Vineyard City Church in Tucson. As I attended the church, I began to see how the space itself was a large factor not only in the functionality of the church, but in what is communicated about religion, God and the mission of the church itself. It also plays a big role in the structure of the services, activities, and the relationship to the greater Tucson community. Pastor Gary Stokes took over Vineyard City Church about six years ago, when it had a dwindling congregation of about eighteen people. Under new administration, the church stabilized and became highly diverse. It began to grow as a result. When their current home, the former YMCA building was sold and demolished, they were forced to become a load in-load out church based out of mobile minis during the week and Blenman Elementary School on Sunday mornings. As the church grows to a congregation of about 120, it is clear that the building is no longer meeting several functional, relational, and expressional goals. As ministries launch, there is no anchor for the congregation and very little visibility in the community. Since a church building is essentially a tool to minister to the community, a permanent space would allow them to better fulfill their mission statement of showing Jesus' love in word AND deed. The end product of my capstone research and development will be a general master plan and complete building design for Vineyard City Church. The project will ultimately be a balance of religious demonstration, functional necessity, aesthetic attractiveness, social facilitation, and financial consideration so the design is attractive and attainable.

Abstract:
Since Montesquie's incisive differentiation of the principal forms of governance and their components, the rate at which theories of governance have been proposed has exponenetially grown now when we have a plethora of different theories on the best way to govern, lead and /or manage. Anyone interested in this topic is confronted with many conflicting schools of thought, from Weber's theory of the 'iron cage' to Wheatley's new-age concept of leadership. This seeming maze of different theories can be seen merely as different perspectives on the overall embracing concept of governance which is essentially the holistic conception and explanation of differentiated purposive human systems - about paradigms and systems that have their inception in and are limited by, human mind. The core challenge, then, is to put some order and rationale into the understanding of this 'many-headed ' concept of governance. This thesis meets this challenge by mapping out a cognitive framework that is capable of embracing and ordering all the multitudinous differentiated conceptions of human governance experienced at the different levels of society. In essence, this thesis reformulates the concept of organizational governance in terms of the metaphor of the human mind. The cognitive model of governance are embraced by the different organizations in different circumstances and why this is appropriate and necessary, how and why governance changes over time, and how it is important to institute processes of inquiry, dialogue and reflection in order to know and choose more consciously. As a consequence of using the mind metaphor to analyse governance in Western society, the key conclusion is that there has been a substantial shift or evolution in thinking from a mangerialist mindset to the more abstract politicist mindset. This fundamental shift in mindset is pervasive and influences the perspectives taken at many levels in the human governance systems.

Ni, Lijun. "Building professional identity as computer science teachers: supporting high school computer science teachers through reflection and community building." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/42870.

Full text
Abstract:
Computing education requires qualified computing teachers. The reality is that too few high schools in the U.S. have computing/computer science teachers with formal computer science (CS) training, and many schools do not have CS teacher at all. Moreover, teacher retention rate is often low. Beginning teacher attrition rate is particularly high in secondary education. Therefore, in addition to the need for preparing new CS teachers, we also need to support those teachers we have recruited and trained to become better teachers and continue teaching CS. Teacher education literature, especially teacher identity theory, suggests that a strong sense of teacher identity is a major indicator or feature of committed, qualified teachers. However, under the current educational system in the U.S., it could be challenging to establish teacher identity for high school (HS) CS teachers, e.g., due to a lack of teacher certification for CS. This thesis work centers upon understanding the sense of identity HS CS teachers hold and exploring ways of supporting their identity development through a professional development program: the Disciplinary Commons for Computing Educators (DCCE). DCCE has a major focus on promoting reflection on teaching practice and community building. With scaffolded activities such as course portfolio creation, peer review and peer observation among a group of HS CS teachers, it offers opportunities for CS teachers to explicitly reflect on and narrate their teaching, which is a central process of identity building through their participation within the community. In this thesis research, I explore the development of CS teacher identity through professional development programs. I first conducted an interview study with local HS CS teachers to understand their sense of identity and factors influencing their identity formation. I designed and enacted the professional program (DCCE) and conducted case studies with DCCE participants to understand how their participation in DCCE supported their identity development as a CS teacher. Overall,I found that these CS teachers held different teacher identities with varied features related to their motivation and commitment in teaching CS. I identified four concrete factors that contributed to these teachers' sense of professional identity as a CS teacher. I addressed some of these issues for CS teachers' identity development (especially the issue of lacking community) through offering professional development opportunities with a major focus on teacher reflection and community building. Results from this work indicate a potential model of supporting CS identity development, mapping the characteristics of the professional development program with particular facets of CS teacher identity. This work offers further understanding of the unique challenges that current CS teachers are facing in their CS teaching, as well as the challenges of preparing and supporting CS teachers. My findings also suggest guidelines for teacher education and professional development program design and implementation for building committed, qualified CS teachers in ways that promote the development of CS teacher identity.

Abstract:
The objective of this project is to build an eScience/grid infrastructure suitable for use with environmental sciences and especially with hydrological science. The infrastructure allows a wide range of hydrological problems to be investigated and is particularly suitable for either computationally intensive or multiple scenario applications. To accomplish this objective, this project discovered the shortcomings of current grid infrastructures for hydrological science and developed missing components to fill this gap. In particular, there were three primary areas which needed work; firstly, integrating data and computing grids; secondly, visualization of geographic information from grid outputs; and thirdly, implementing hydrological simulations based on this infrastructure. A grid infrastructure, which consists of a computing and a data grid, has been built. In addition, the computing grid has been extended to utilize the Amazon cloud computing resources. Users can implement a complete simulation job life cycle form job submission, and data management to metadata management based on this infrastructure. In order to deal with the visualization and metadata within the grid, XMLization is used in this project. I developed a Writing Keyhole Markup Language (WKML), which is a Fortran library allowing enviornemntal scientists to visualize their model outputs in Google Earth. I have also developed a Writing Hydrological Markup Language (WHML) to describe the hydrological data. Finally, an XPath-based tool integrated with RMCS has been developed to extract metadata from XML files. A hydrological scientific pilot project tries to discover whether SHETRAN modelling could be used to predict hydrological behaviour at downstream. The outcomes proved that the SHETRAN synthetic Flood Frequency Curves (FFCs) suggest that simple short-term modelling can be extrapolated to estimate the impact on FFCs of changes in land use/management.

"Genome puzzle master (GPM): an integrated pipeline for building and editing pseudomolecules from fragmented sequences." OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621468.

Full text
Abstract:
Motivation: Next generation sequencing technologies have revolutionized our ability to rapidly and affordably generate vast quantities of sequence data. Once generated, raw sequences are assembled into contigs or scaffolds. However, these assemblies are mostly fragmented and inaccurate at the whole genome scale, largely due to the inability to integrate additional informative datasets (e.g. physical, optical and genetic maps). To address this problem, we developed a semi-automated software tool-Genome Puzzle Master (GPM)-that enables the integration of additional genomic signposts to edit and build 'new-gen-assemblies' that result in high-quality 'annotation-ready' pseudomolecules. Results: With GPM, loaded datasets can be connected to each other via their logical relationships which accomplishes tasks to 'group,' 'merge,' 'order and orient' sequences in a draft assembly. Manual editing can also be performed with a user-friendly graphical interface. Final pseudomolecules reflect a user's total data package and are available for long-term project management. GPM is a web-based pipeline and an important part of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which can be easily deployed on local servers for any genome research laboratory.

In the seventeenth century, Philosophers such as Leibniz and Descartes put forward proposal for codes to relate words between languages. The first patents for "translating machines" were applied for in the mid-1930s. Up to the 1980s, most Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems were based on complex sets of hand-written rules. At that time however, the introduction of machine learning algorithms for language processing revolutionized NLP.[5] In 2008, Collobert and Weston exhibited the power of pre-trained word embed- dings in a paper called A unified architecture for natural language processing. Here, word embeddings is highlight for its ability in downstream tasks. They also discuss a neural network architecture that many of todays approaches are built upon. In 2013, Mikolov created word2vec, a toolkit that enabled the training and use of pre-trained embeddings. In 2014, Pennington introduced GloVe, a competitive set of pre-trained embeddings. Starting off, a single word or group of words can be converted into a vector. This vector can be created using the Skip gram method, which predicts the possible words nearby, the LSTM-RNN method, which forms semantic representations of sentences by learning more about the sentence as it iterates through a sentence, using single convolution neural networks, and several other methods. Using these theories, we are trying to build a Similarity Engine which provides machine learning based content search and classification of data.

Abstract:
Inter-organisational trust is increasingly important among supply chain participants, where threats are building up from sources out of organisational control. The same problem is faced in the cyber security field, where threat level increases from the changes outside organisational boundaries. Each value chain participating in the supply chain must be secured. Trust building is mandated among all trust network members. The business interaction between supply chain participants is enabled by building inter-organisational trust first. This study provided ways to build this inter-organisational trust by considering steps to take in information security management system (ISMS) implementation. ISMS is set of processes, documentation, activities and resources that together secure assets within an organisation. It must be assembled to support strategic business goals and comply selected requirement criteria. Due to different ways and purposes, organisations implement ISMS’s and obtain the security standard certification; it is not a proof of secure business processes or trust per se. Instead, it is a good starting point for trust building. This study used narrative literature review to find supporting and resisting elements of inter-organisational trust that can consider in ISMS. The study limited the research into a very narrow area between information processing science, behaviour sciences and discipline of management. The research found several elements (102) that can be considered in ISMS to have the effect to interorganisational trust building. The findings were categorised using ISO/IEC 27001 (2013) ISMS implementation steps to provide concrete support for security professionals. There are none or very limited number of research literature on exact combined topic of inter-organisational trust building and ISMS. The multidisciplinary phenomenon of information security coupled with inter-organisational trust requires more attention from the research community. Schools teaching information security should develop their course coverage to support this multidisciplinary phenomenon in several view points, not just from their own discipline to achieve producing suitable resources for the industry
Yritysten välinen luottamus on yhä tärkeämpää toimitusketjuihin osallistuvien organisaatioiden keskuudessa, missä uhat syntyvät yritysten tietoturvakontrollien ulkopuolelta. Sama ongelma kohdataan kyberturvallisuudessa, missä uhkataso kasvaa muutoksista organisaatiorajojen ulkopuolella. Jokaisen toimitusketjuun osallistuvan on suojauduttava. Luottamuksen rakentamisen tehtävä on kaikkien jäsenien yhteinen asia luottamusverkostossa. Toimitusketjuun osallistuvien on rakennettava organisaatioiden välinen luottamus ennen liiketoiminnan aloittamista. Löydökset jaoteltiin ISO/IEC 27001 (2013) tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmän toteutusaskelien mukaisesti, jotta tulokset tukisivat parhaiten tietoturvallisuuden asiantuntijaa konkreettisella tasolla.

Abstract:

As software becomes increasingly embedded in our daily lives, it becomes more and more critical to find the vulnerabilities in this software. Worse, since the amount and variety of this software is rapidly proliferating, manual analysis by rare, talented hackers cannot scale to keep this software safe.

My first foray into what became my dissertation work tried to address a specific class of this general problem: backdoors inserted (either due to malice or for later support and maintenance convenience) into internet-connected embedded devices, such as smart power-meters. To address the requirement of having to reason about logical bugs and to analyze enormous amounts of binary code, I created a novel combination of static and dynamic-symbolic analysis techniques. Combining this with an insight into a new way to define a backdoor, I was able to build a system that analyzed firmware of real-world devices to identify such vulnerabilities in them.

This first foray led into my main contribution: the generalization of this analysis composition in the form of a principled binary analysis framework built to enable the seamless combination of diverse program analysis techniques. This framework, angr, provides a powerful base future research from myself, my lab-mates, and researchers around the world (as the framework is fully open source). One of the early applications of the system was the identification of authentication bypass vulnerabilities in binary firmware using a combination of static analysis and dynamic symbolic execution.

Using angr, we built an autonomous program analysis system that was able to analyze, exploit, and protect binary code without any human intervention. This system, the Mechanical Phish, won third place in the Cyber Grand Challenge, a competition created by DARPA to bootstrap the development of autonomous Cyber Reasoning Systems. While the system did well, its performance in the Cyber Grand Challenge provided an insight that shaped the conclusion of my dissertation: even with the current program analysis techniques combined into a coherent Cyber Reasoning System, serious limitations still exist. In the final work of my graduate studies, I explored the careful reintegration of human assistance into our analysis automation, in a way that addresses its limitations without compromising its scalability advantage over manual analysis.

Abstract:
The analysis of gene deletions is a fundamental approach for investigating gene function. We applied machine learning techniques to predict phenotypic effects of gene deletions in yeast. We created a dataset containing features that potentially have predictive power and then used feature processing techniques to improve the dataset and identify features that are important for our classification problem. We evaluated four different classification algorithms, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and Random Forest, with respect to this problem. We used our framework to complement the set of experimentally determined essential yeast genes produced by the Saccharomyces Genome Deletion Project and produce more than 2000 annotations for genes that might cause morphological alterations in yeast.

Abstract:
Anchored in teaching, research and community engagement approaches, Murdoch University is setting up the development of a symbolic new mixed use campus precinct expansion which is listed as one of Murdoch University’s strategic plan. As stated above, a part of the strategic plan includes the development of a new Mechanical Engineering Building (MEB) in order to engage future Mechanical Engineering students. This newly proposed MEB would be designed and constructed as an extension building from the existing Science and Computing Building that is located at the Murdoch South Street campus. Hence, the major focus of this research study investigate the new Murdoch University Mechanical Engineering green building structure and design by analysing the energy consumption of the existing Science and Computing building. The annual energy consumption of the existing building is obtained through the identification of construction materials, building design and building operational activities. All this information is then simulated using Virtual Environment by Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES-VE). The outline of this IES-VE modelling tool and implementation procedures is illustrated in Chapter 3 (Methodology) and the simulation results used to identify the major sources of the energy use are included in Chapter 4 (Results). The results showed the massive energy consumption that being used in the current Science and Computing building and the annual energy consumption is broken down into different components that makes up the total energy use. Moreover, the possibilities for building energy consumption reduction are discussed and this is based on the low embodied energy building materials and low existing building operational energy reduction strategies. For the sake of achieving green star building standard, NABERS self rating tools are introduced by determining the building operational routines and its design structure. The existing building’s NABERS score will be recognised as a useful measure for the new MEB design ideas and the selection of appliances used in order to achieve the low energy building objectives. Furthermore, the structure and design of the new MEB are drafted based on the essential requirements using SketchUp drawing tool. The dimensions and working purpose of each individual floor are illustrated and reviewed. On the other hand, basic specifications of the MEB such as experimentation and research laboratory requirements, computer appliances and HVAC demands are determined in order to diagnose the NABERS rating and thus establish a new target for green building achievement. The estimated new building energy consumption is generated and possible strategies which include energy efficiency design, energy efficient technologies and renewable technologies are discussed in Chapter 5. Generally, a green building is achieved through an integration of energy efficient programs and environmentally friendly construction projects. Thus, an introduction of potential sustainable strategies is illustrated in Chapter 6 in order to develop Murdoch University into a carbon-neutral community. The potential sustainable strategies that are discussed in this thesis project included rainwater harvesting technology, wastewater treatment plants, timber prefabricated construction and green roof garden implementation. Lastly, project summary is included in Chapter 6 (Conclusion) and several recommendations are discussed that would be important to be evaluated and discussed for further improvement.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is synchronous master-slave database replication, failover and distributed recovery for a cluster of database servers. Our replication solution allows updates on the master, and queries on ail sites. Updates of transactions are sent to ail sites before they are committed on the master. To do this, we take advantage of the semantics of group communication Systems. With failover, there is always a master in the group. Distributed recovery ensures that a site that has been introduced in the System brings its own copy of the database to be consistent with the rest of the other databases. It does this by getting all the transactions it missed from another site while it was not in the group. It is only after having successfully carried out failover and recovery mechanisms that a new site is ready to share in the load of the system.

Abstract:
The workdescribed here was undertaken at the University ofBrighton between 1986 and 2006 in order to assist Computer Science students to acquire practical software development skills, primarily in the areas of real-time systems and object-oriented programming. The contribution to knowledge represented by this work is the development of a set of design principles for educational software, and a variety of software artefacts which demonstrate the applicability ofthese principles. The publications span two decades and describe artefacts covering a number of areas in the curriculum related to software development. They address a range of topics within Computer Science due to the rapidly-evolving nature of the discipline, but they have led to the development of a common philosophy towards the development of educational software, and they each provide an original approach to the topics they address. The success of this philosophy and the originality of the work is evidenced by the fact that they have each been adopted by other educationaf institutions, have been widely praised by students and educators, and have in many cases led to related work by others. This critical appraisal concentrates on describing the evolution of a coherent educational rationale which underpins the various artefacts described here, and on placing this more firmly within the context ofestablished educational theory.

Abstract:
Lean software development has become more and more popular. It is especially suited for development of Software as a Service -applications (SaaS). One reason for this is the way the SaaS -applications are released; they are usually released in fast cadence of iterations, in some cases even multiple times a day. This requires a new approach to the tools and methods used in software development. The objective of this thesis is to find out what requirements there are for development tools in context of small software development company. The lean software development has its roots in lean manufacturing. Many of the methods used in lean software development are somewhat similar to the methods of lean manufacturing. So it is relevant to know out what kind of methods and processes are used in lean manufacturing, and learn about their experiences, as it has been around from 1940s. Two high level requirements for development tools were derived from the methods and processes found in lean manufacturing and lean software development: — Every change must be reviewed and tested — Installation and update process must be automated Two different tools were then selected for implementation. These tools were then used as a part of for a new development process, which was focused for short lead time of new features using lean software development methodologies. This process was found out to be useful in internal acceptance, but there were problems in acceptance testing by the customer as the pace of changes were too fast.

Abstract:
Master of Industrial Relations
Australia, during the twenty five years that followed the end of the Second World War, experienced increased prosperity and a stable industrial relations system in which the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission (the federal commission) played a dominant and authoritative role. The NSW building boom which began in the latter part of the 1950s introduced new technology, concentrated building workers in the central business district of Sydney, and broadened the range of skills required of builders' labourers. The major NSW building tradesmen's union, the Building Workers' Industrial Union (NSW/BWIU), had a communist leadership. The national body of that union lost its federal industrial registration in 1948, and the NSW/BWIU moderated its behaviour after it nearly lost its own, NSW state, registration in 1957. The Australian Building Construction Employees and Builders' Labourers Federation (ABLF) had a federal award under which most of the members of its NSW branch (NSW/BLF) were employed. The leadership of both the ABLF and of the NSW/BLF were communist. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA) suffered a defection by the ABLF leadership in the early 1960s to a communist party which endorsed Marxist- Leninist policies. The BWIU leadership also left the CPA (and formed the Socialist Party of Australia) following an announced shift in policy direction by the CPA in 1969. That shift in policy abandoned the `united front' concept and adopted ultra-left policies which advocated vanguard action by small groups. The announcement by the CPA of its new policies occurred after the gaoling of a Victorian union leader which signalled the virtual collapse of the previously authoritative, and punitive, role of the federal commission. The structure and politics of society underwent enormous change during the 1960s and early 1970s which was an era of protest during which various social movements were formed. The NSW/BLF became a major participant in those protests and movements, and conducted various industrial and social campaigns during the first half of the 1970s. Those campaigns were conducted in line with the ultra-left policies of the CPA, and this isolated the NSW/BLF from its federal body and from the trade union movement generally. This thesis analyses some of the campaigns conducted by the NSW/BLF during the period 1970-1974 and the various responses by the Master Builders Association of NSW (MBA/NSW) to those campaigns. The MBA/NSW broadened its membership base during the 1950s, and the effect that its new membership structure had on its decision-making processes is also considered.

This thesis investigates the feasibility of a smart building evacuation system, capable of guiding occupants along safe paths to exits and responding to changing threats. Inspired by developments in amorphous computing, the design presented is scalable to large networks, robust to hardware and communication failure, and based on simple low-cost components. A simulation and hardware prototype demonstrate that this distributed building evacuation system is both feasible and cost effective.

In this thesis, I describe a system I built that produces instantiated representations from descriptions embedded in natural language. For example, in the sentence 'The girl walked to the table', my system produces a description of movement along a path (the girl moves on a path to the table), instantiating a general purpose trajectory representation that models movement along a path. I demonstrate that descriptions found by my system enable the imagining of an entire inner world, transforming sentences into three-dimensional graphical descriptions of action. By building action descriptions from ordinary language, I illustrate the gains we can make by exploiting the connection between language and thought. I assert that a small set of simple representations should be able to provide powerful coverage of human expression through natural language. In particular, I examine the sorts of representations that are common in the Wall Street Journal from the Penn Treebank, providing a counterpoint for the many other sorts of analyses of the Penn Treebank in other work. Then, I turn to recognized experts in provoking our imaginations with words, using my system to examine the work of four great authors to uncover commonalities and differences in their styles from the perspective of the way they make representational choices in their work.

Abstract:
The research concentrated on the current as well as the past quagmire of the Somali conflict. Political, social and economic triggers have been identified to resolve or reduce violent conflict and disorder. The research used primary as well as secondary sources to study the issues and explore the problems inherent in an environment of scarce resources. Confrontations between the state and society were brought to a higher level of violence since the late 1970s following the Somali-Ethiopian war. The author explored avenues for reconciliation and nation-building and introduced several models as possible strategies for nation-building. Conclusively, a home-grown, traditional mechanisms model was recommended which entails the following policy prescriptions to achieve long-lasting peace and security for Somalia: 1. Governance structures of law and order. 2. Resources: De-escalating conflicts by opening up negotiating opportunities of land and property. 3. Complete demilitarization of society. 4. International cooperation. A plan by the international community to reconstruct and rehabilitate Somalia is essential if we have to avoid a relapse into a chaotic, violent situation in Somalia.

Abstract:
Software documentation is an important aspect of both software projects and software engineering in general. In fact, documentation engineering has become a popular sub-domain in the software engineering community. Unfortunately, the current perception of documentation is that it is outdated, irrelevant and incomplete. For the most part, this perception is probably true. Regrettably, the documentation concern cannot be resolved by simply mandating more and better documentation. This approach fails to resolve the problem as the solution ignores the fundamental goals of software engineering. The role of documentation in a software engineering environment is to communicate information to its audience and instill knowledge of the system it describes. Documentation should efficiently allow for future software development without hindering current progress. An engineered solution to the documentation problem would involve allocating appropriate resources to document adequate knowledge about the system to the extent that both current and future development will optimally benefit. Unfortunately, neither do we fully understand the impact of documentation on current or future development, nor what aspects of documentation contribute to its ability to communicate effectively. We do not really know to what extent we should document in order to balance the trade offs between, on the one hand, allocating too many resources for documentation thus hindering present development; and, on the other hand, not allocating enough resources and thus hindering future development. To complicate matters, increasing documentation resources does not necessarily improve future software development (the ultimate goal of documentation) because we do not really understand what defines documentation quality. Our research focuses on the issue of documentation quality. In particular, which attributes of documentation make it effective to the audience and how can this information be monitored and parameterized to provide a better perspective about the relevance of documentation in a software project.

Abstract:
Recent advances in portable computing devices and wireless technology make it possible to provide seamless and ubiquitous services for mobile users. As users move from one location to another, there is a greater need to automatically provide office-like environments that normally have to be configured and setup on an individual basis by each user at each visited location. Due to occasional disconnections, device capabilities and network heterogeneity, users' mobility places a considerable burden on applications to be used by mobile users. On the other hand, it receives little assistance from existing infrastructure and Internet protocols for tracing users' movement and adapting services to satisfy unique characteristics of mobility. This thesis recognizes the importance of managing users' mobility at different levels. From the network level by monitoring network devices and access points to the organizational level by assigning a personalised profile and a specific role to mobile users at visited locations. We propose a set of policy-based agents composing a framework that assists applications and services in dealing with mobility challenges and capable of providing a mobile working environment, similar to the home or office environment, to be used by users wherever they travel and whichever devices they use. The framework enables application designers to more easily build complex mobile and context aware applications. It also provides some basic services so that it can help mobile users simply by making use of the existing support and built in policy-based software agents. In addition, three different applications built upon the framework along with various scenarios have been discussed. Various scenarios illustrate how the framework can be helpful in providing support and services to mobile users. The framework is also a test-bed platform that can be used for the ongoing and future research projects that make use of mobility and context-awareness in MMARL laboratory.

Abstract:

Interest in indoor localization is growing because it is an important component of many applications (e.g. augmented reality, customer navigation). Image-based localization, using naturally-occurring features in the environment, is an attractive solution to this problem. A challenge is to be able to perform this on a mobile device with limited computing power. Another challenge is that buildings can have interior locations with similar appearances, which can confuse an image-based recognition system. Since many applications do not need the exact location of an image, this research focuses on qualitative localization, which is the problem of determining the approximate location by matching a query image to a database of images. This paper proposes a novel approach that uses an efficient hashing scheme to quickly identify candidate locations, then applies a strong geometric constraint to reject matches that have similar appearance. Through experiments using a large campus building, the approach is shown to be able to localize a query image with high accuracy and have the potential to run in real time on a mobile device.

Voges, Erik. "A framework for building spatiotemporal applications in Java." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8777.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
A relatively new area of study that first received attention during the past decade explores how spatiotemporal data can be efficiently used in applications and stored in databases. Spatial data includes the locations or positions, and possibly also the size and orientation of physical objects. Temporal data is time-stamped, i.e. every piece of temporal data is associated with at least one point or interval in time. Spatiotemporal data is both spatial and temporal. It would denote, for example, where a particular object was at a given time, or when an object had a certain size. There is a need for many spatial applications to have temporal functionality added. Often such an approach is fraught with problems, since the existing designs were specifically tailored for spatial applications, and changing those designs invariably leads to poorer performance or some other compromises. Because it is not easy to change an existing spatial or temporal system to a spatiotemporal system, it makes sense for developers to start building new systems that are optimised for handling spatiotemporal data. Building an application from the ground up is a daunting task, but there are powerful technologies in existence that can expedite the process. One such technology is found in persistent programming languages, which relieves the application builder of the task of storing and retrieving data (e.g. on a database or file). Persistence technology was created with the aim of making complex applications such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems and Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) software easier to create and maintain. When using a persistent language, the same data types and operations are used for both transient and database data - there is no need for code to translate between store and memory formats or to transfer objects between memory and disk. In contrast, programmers using conventional databases need to be able to program in two languages: the database language (like SQL) and a programming language (like C++ or Java). To date there has been little work done to actually apply persistence technology to the GIS domain [MIA96, SVZ98]. One problem with a persistent programming approach in this context is that one has to spend a great deal of time to work out how spatiotemporal data is going to be dealt with in the application, as noted in trying to build a PJama (Persistent Java) system for the local Sea Fisheries Research Institute in our department [SVZ98]. How will spatiotemporal data be represented, what methods are necessary for manipulating the data, and where would spatiotemporal data and methods be positioned in the overall structure of the program? This thesis aims at developing a framework that can be used to make persistent spatiotemporal systems a viable alternative to conventional GIS applications. The approach adopted involves finding a suitable data model, implementing this as a PJama (Persistent Java) class library, extending this with structures to improve performance, and evaluating the result.

Wang, Jiayin. "Building Efficient Large-Scale Big Data Processing Platforms." Thesis, University of Massachusetts Boston, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10262281.

Full text
Abstract:

In the era of big data, many cluster platforms and resource management schemes are created to satisfy the increasing demands on processing a large volume of data. A general setting of big data processing jobs consists of multiple stages, and each stage represents generally defined data operation such as ltering and sorting. To parallelize the job execution in a cluster, each stage includes a number of identical tasks that can be concurrently launched at multiple servers. Practical clusters often involve hundreds or thousands of servers processing a large batch of jobs. Resource management, that manages cluster resource allocation and job execution, is extremely critical for the system performance.

Generally speaking, there are three main challenges in resource management of the new big data processing systems. First, while there are various pending tasks from dierent jobs and stages, it is difficult to determine which ones deserve the priority to obtain the resources for execution, considering the tasks' different characteristics such as resource demand and execution time. Second, there exists dependency among the tasks that can be concurrently running. For any two consecutive stages of a job, the output data of the former stage is the input data of the later one. The resource management has to comply with such dependency. The third challenge is the inconsistent performance of the cluster nodes. In practice, run-time performance of every server is varying. The resource management needs to dynamically adjust the resource allocation according to the performance change of each server.

The resource management in the existing platforms and prior work often rely on fixed user-specic congurations, and assumes consistent performance in each node. The performance, however, is not satisfactory under various workloads. This dissertation aims to explore new approaches to improving the eciency of large-scale big data processing platforms. In particular, the run-time dynamic factors are carefully considered when the system allocates the resources. New algorithms are developed to collect run-time data and predict the characteristics of jobs and the cluster. We further develop resource management schemes that dynamically tune the resource allocation for each stage of every running job in the cluster. New findings and techniques in this dissertation will certainly provide valuable and inspiring insights to other similar problems in the research community.
