Abstract:
In the article we tried to investigate theoretical ideas concerning actual students’ reasons for education in the field of architecture in frame of the second level of higher professional education system. We present the results of survey that we conducted last year. We collected data about students’ reasons to enrol for architectures’ and others master programmes and their expectations of programmes’ content, programmes’ volume, curriculum structure, placement periods. We analysed the teaching methods, structure and trends in architecture’s master programmes that was legally introduced by government standards. As a result, we concluded that the changes of education standards mostly meet expectations of master programmes contenders. However, the contenders will succeed in higher school only if their motivation is enough strong and appropriate.

Abstract:
Teaching terminology is a strategic response to the European Educational Convergence guidelines, taken by the Polytechnic University of Madrid. It is vested in a new course “English Terminology for Architecture and Building Construction” offered in the “Master of Techniques and Systems of Construction”. The course is interdisciplinary, integrating material from the various sciences involved in architectural practice and exploring it through the discipline of applied linguistics, as recommended by Cabré (2003). The approach is bilingualized, working with Spanish architecture professionals in the medium of English. Students are made aware of the dynamic nature of terminology through corpus-building, and given first-hand experience of terminography through compiling their own bilingualized1 termbanks of English architectural terms. A model online termbank system (TermFinder), which is being co-developed for architecture and building construction after successful testing in other professional fields, is also discussed

Abstract:
AbstractThe development in (Dutch) building practice necessitates developments in other aspects, besides specialized and professional skills, a new integral approach in education and the introduction of such an approach into building design practice. In 2005, the Faculty of Architecture, Building, and Planning of the University of Technology Eindhoven commenced a multidisciplinary master project on integral design focused on a sustainable climatic design. Students of architecture, building technology, structural engineering, and building services participated in these multidisciplinary master projects. The students began with a 2-day learning-by-practice workshop that was implemented and tested in collaboration with experienced professionals from the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and the Dutch Association of Consulting Engineers. These workshops have become part of the permanent educational and professional program of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects. This is one of the few projects in which the practical experience is transferred into the educational academic program and vice versa; normally this process functions only in one of the two directions. The theoretical basis of the design method on which the education of students and professionals is based is discussed and results presented.

Abstract:
Leon Krier hardly needs to be introduced to anyone who has a professional or academic interest in the discussions of architecture and urbanism of recent decades. An internationally established architect, architectural theorist and urban planner, he is well-known not only as the author of numerous architectural and urban design projects and master-plans, but also for his defense of what is sometimes called „neo-traditional” architecture and the values that were and continue to be associated with the role and aesthetics of the architecture of past centuries. Although he has been attacked for his non-conformist views and critical attitude towards radical modernism, Leon Krier remains an important figure in discussions of architecture and urbanism, and his interests overlap with present concerns for environment and sustainable future. The talk by the editor of the journal with Leon Krier is an attempt to discuss the flaws of contemporary architectural and urban practice as well as to indicate its roots and draft some prospects for the future.

Abstract:
In this article we consider ways of solving the problem of lacking practical experience in drawing and painting among the students of architecture departments. We propose a solution to this problem through creation of teaching methods aimed to develop a perception of of nature, compositional and technical skills and abilities. We study the principles of the approach to the plein air practice working program of the leading architectural universities in Russia, and also compare and analyze two approaches to the program: an interdisciplinary approach based on the relationship of architecture with the visual arts - drawing and studying architectural monuments and holding a plein air in the form of master classes by professional artists, with an emphasis on techniques and technologies of work in the plein air. Revealing the methodological features of building a program for mastering the universal and general professional competencies of an architect and designer: acquaintance with the monuments of architectural heritage, a creative research approach to the object of study, the development of compositional thinking and the basics of linear constructive drawing, the development of graphic techniques necessary for working on sketches of projects. Recommendations are given for the development of tasks for plein air practice for students of architecture, reconstruction, urban planning and design departments.

Abstract:
Noteworthy, the process of professional development of any specialist is closely related to the formation of professional readiness of a specialist for future activities. The core of the professional development is a positive attitude of the individual to his/her future profession, fairly stable motives for future activities, professionally significant personality traits, professional knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as some experience of their application in practice. It is shown that in the period of direct implementation of pedagogical activity there is a correlation of the specialist’s theoretical knowledge and skills with the peculiarities of practical activities; some experience of pedagogical activity is gained; the individual style of embodiment and realization of pedagogical activity is formed taking into account the professionally important qualities of the person; there is a formation of pedagogical orientation; the pedagogical position is formed; prospects for further professional growth are determined. Thus, for the professional development of the person it is important to master the norms, standards of the profession, the formation of the necessary professional personal qualities, knowledge and skills to solve professional problems successfully, for the formation of motivational and value attitude to the person’s profession, individualization, awareness and the realization of the zone of the nearest professional development, readiness for the differentiated estimation of the activity, a combination of the professional openness, the ability to study independent creative searches. Despite some differences in the process of professional development of the specialist, in the psychological literature there is some unity of the opinion of researchers according to the concept of “professional development”, which means the development of specific professional qualities and personality traits. It is a process which is always quite active. Professional development is a gradual and dynamic process that causes positive changes in personal and professional qualities, contributes to the formation of a positive attitude to the sphere of future profession, the desire to master professional knowledge, skills and abilities. Thus, professional achievements, their evaluation by other people have a significant impact on the formation of many important personal characteristics, such as self-esteem, self-confidence, strengths and abilities. The latter includes the achievement of a certain social status in the society and in then paradigm of the professional sphere. Professional activity facilitates quite serious changes in the professional paradigm of the individual, determines a certain dominant strategy of individual behavior, goals and programs of actions, shows the attitude to the results of own professional activities of future specialists. It is proved that the process of students’ orientation in the world of values should be expanded in time and space, which would create a basis for the formation of the image of a future professional. The latter will characterize the future translator as a person who has risen to the professional level of his/her existence. The hierarchy of values of the translator will include a complex system of value-semantic scripts, which form a valuable attitude to professionally significant activities through awareness of a cognitive field of translation in the paradigm of subject-subject communication as the most important process and a system to master himself/herself. Thus, students themselves become creators of their own value-semantic scripts by presenting an active position of the translator.

"The development of Smart Cyber Operating Theater (SCOT), an innovative medical robot architecture that can allow surgeons to freely select and connect master and slave telesurgical robots." Abstract:
Master-slave robotic technology demonstrates a distinct model of communication that allows one device or user to have unidirectional control over one or more devices. The master refers to the user or device that initiates and controls the transmission, while the slave is the unit that receives these commands and acts accordingly. The direction of control always flows from the master to the slave. This technology has found a plethora of applications in a variety of fields such as engineering, information technology as well as hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Robotic technology has become an integral part of medical applications involving telesurgery (remote surgery) owing to the profound advantages it can offer to both surgeons and patience. Not only is surgery in previously-inoperable conditions now possible through this technology, but robotics also offer additional advantages in the training of medical professionals. In laparoscopic surgery, a high level of accuracy and control are required due to the complex nature and small scale of the area involved. Here, robotically-assisted surgery is performed by the surgeon using master-slave remotely-controlled manipulators or integrating locally-operated small surgical robots in a sterilised area. However, the fundamental problem associated with this master-slave system is that the master and the slave cannot be separated and exchanged with a master or a slave of another system. Performance of the robotic systems during these operations often come across limitations due to the inability of a slave robot to match the pace and performance of the master or the need for different tools during surgery, forcing a requirement for separate master-slave pairs. This creates an inefficiency in the system that Professor Ken Masamune from the Institute of Advance Biomedical Engineering and Science at the Tokyo Women’s Medical University seeks to address. By introducing a middleware that will connect these various masters and slaves, Masamune and his team seek to allow optimal communication and evaluation between robotic units. By separating the master from the slave and using middleware to allow communication between modules, the architecture being developed by Masamune, together with a group of collaborators, provides a quick evaluation of the master-slave combination and enables a far more efficient development and use of telesurgical robots.

Abstract:
The article refers to the formation of students with a specialty "Architecture and Urban Planning" of the educational level "Bachelor, Master" of the ability to function as subjects of the international educational space, carrying out active intercultural communication as part of their professional and scientific activities. The Bologna Declaration formulated the main goals leading to the comparability and harmonization of national educational systems of higher education in Europe. Currently, due to the active process of Ukraine's integration into the common European educational space of particular significance foreign language training of highly qualified personnel in the system of undergraduate and graduate programs. Relevant for the introduction of training programs in a foreign language in specialized disciplines in non-linguistic universities into the educational process is the process of preparation and planning by teachers of classes in the relevant disciplines. It is necessary to identify priorities, taking into account the study of these disciplines in the framework of the basic methodology, defined by many years of experience. The article focuses on the features of teaching the main core discipline of a specialty of architectural design in a foreign language. In this case, a foreign language acts as a means of increasing professional competence and personal and professional development of both teachers and students. In order to achieve a high quality education comparable to European, it is necessary to actively introduce new teaching technologies. Innovative technologies of teaching foreign languages in a non-linguistic university include a combination of traditional and intensive teaching methods, the development of a holistic system of teaching students how to speak language on professional topics, taking into account professional training, and the development of common assessment criteria. Without the synchronization and interconnection of the work of foreign language departments and disciplines in the profile of the training, it is impossible to master professional foreign language vocabulary, develop skills in all types of speech activity, and reading and translating texts in the specialty. Foreign language training in a specialized discipline contributes to the achievement of a number of goals: obtaining skills and competencies necessary for employment, the opportunity to participate in integration activities, developing a lifelong learning culture, countering social exclusion, and promoting an active citizenship.

Abstract:
Examining an interdisciplinary university course for architecture, wood science, and engineering students, this paper studies how the students’ ability to master digital workflows influenced their success in learning collaborative design skills. It highlights potential challenges and opportunities posed by the introduction of new digital tools to support emerging integrated building design in both education and professional practice. The particular course focuses on the wood industry, which is rapidly changing from a very traditional to a highly innovative sector and increasingly embracing the latest technological developments in computational design, simulation, and digital fabrication. This study explores the influence of parametric design on collaboration dynamics and workflow within an interdisciplinary group of students embodying the roles of manufacturer, engineer, and architect. Student-generated data of the first three years of the class is analyzed thematically to find correlations with productive collaborations. Focusing on a stage of an evolving teaching and learning process, this analysis allows identifications of common themes and patterns, suggesting implications for practice and future research. The course highlights the need to integrate data interoperability, collaboration skill-building, and material awareness in contemporary digitally enabled architecture, engineering, and construction education. The lessons learned in this course can be of value to academic programs and professional firms involved in incorporating digital design and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Abstract:
The Philadelphia architect and master builder Owen Biddle (1774–1806) contributed to the making of some of the early Republic's most important buildings and is best known as the author of one of the first American-authored architectural books. During the course of his relatively brief career, Biddle's achievements in architecture and theory were profoundly shaped by Philadelphia's distinctive, Quaker-influenced economic and artistic culture. Focusing on two hitherto unknown row houses built by Biddle between 1798 and 1801, Conor Lucey reveals for the first time the business and property interests of this important if enigmatic figure. Viewing Biddle's work against the socioeconomic backdrop of Federal-era Philadelphia, and drawing on previously unexplored archival material, Owen Biddle and Philadelphia's Real Estate Market, 1798–1806 situates Biddle's real estate ventures within the context of the city's early nineteenth-century building world. This study of Biddle's career as builder-developer expands our knowledge of his professional life and our understanding of the formation of his ideas.

Abstract:
Title: Creativity with Tradition and Innovation in Architectural Education Our undergraduate architecture education is generally oriented towards professional education and not academic education. This professional education originated from the tradition of workshops and skills, in addition to being heavily influenced by the world of art and culture. Therefore, many are characterized by the existence of trial and error caused because the problem is wicked rather than tame. Professional education with a touch of art that is wild will really need a very close interaction between the master and apprentice. Because of this system, the transfer of skills and knowledge will move effectively. The quality of the design can basically be improved by studying precedents (architectural works that already exist and are considered successful) and a further understanding of the principles underlying the architectural work (principles, ideas about aspects that make architectural works successful). Regarding the implications of use and image for the architectural work). Like other creative artists, architects use some strategies that they are accustomed to from time to time. They learn through experience, absorbing lessons from each design case so that later works will be influenced by previous works. Redrawing and imitating the master's work consciously is an important step here. After observing and imitating, it is hoped that the beginner can consciously discover the principles that underlie the work of the expert. In the end, it is hoped that the beginner will someday be able to work with a strategy that is more in line with his abilities and wishes. Now, our challenge is how these things can be done well, while the interaction of lecturers and students, apprentices and apprentices, is limited due to the pandemic.

Abstract:
The inclusion of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodologies as functional design tools in architecture has become a staple feature in architectural studies and research work. The trend while necessitated by challenges presented by the actualities involved in architectural practice, takes for granted the acceptability and knowledgeability of the built environment professional. This study highlights the fact that for MCDM to find general adoption and to provide its benefit in widespread solutions, the architect to whom these methodologies are advanced, should have an introduction to these approaches, formally at the educational level. Therefore, this paper evaluates the need for the inclusion of MCDM in architectural curriculum in Nigerian schools of architecture. The views of practicing professional architects, faculty members and students, were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed in a cross-sectional survey administered via questionnaires. A total of 54 respondents were evaluated, with findings of the study, indicating the novelty of MCDM and a general consensus for its introduction into the architectural curriculum, but varied opinions at what stage it should be introduced: 64% (undergraduate level); 26% (Masters’ level) and 10% (postmasters’ level). Consequently, the study recommended that MCDM be introduced at the undergraduate level, because students would be better situated intellectually to apply, modify and diversify the methodology in architectural problem modelling in the long run.

Schmidt, Freek H. "Expose Ignorance and Revive the "Bon Goût": Foreign Architects at Jacques-François Blondel's École des Arts." Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 61, no. 1 (March 1, 2002): 4–29. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/991809.

Abstract:
This article focuses on four foreign architects who attended Blondel's school during the 1740s and 1750s: the Dutch architect Pieter de Swart, Sir William Chambers, and German architects Simon Louis du Ry and Karl Philipp Christian von Gontard. Through analysis of relatively unknown documentary evidence, the author reconstructs the actual content of Blondel's teachings. These sources underline Blondel's importance as a promoter of the study of architecture at all levels of society, a principal teacher of both theory and design, a master of spatial organization, a critic of contemporary architectural taste (Rococo and early neoclassicism), and an enthusiastic advocate of the interests of the architect as a professional in control of the entire building process. On the whole Blondel's views were heartily embraced by his foreign students. These facts suggest that, from an international perspective, Blondel should be regarded as a major propagator of the renewal and revival of the language of classicism and not merely as a traditionalist or as the last great theoretician of the Renaissance. Designs completed by his foreign students in their subsequent careers illustrate Blondel's efficacy in changing attitudes to classical architecture and theory, particularly outside France. After their schooling at Blondel's École des Arts, Chambers, de Swart, du Ry, and Gontard all rose to important positions in their homelands and, thanks to their acquired skills, used their education to redirect the practice of architecture. Moreover, their approaches to architectural education, theory, design, history, and contemporary taste clearly distinguished them as disciples of Blondel. To a large extent, they personified Blondel's new professionalism and were responsible for spreading his doctrine and renewed classicism throughout Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century and, at least in part, for carrying it well into the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the creative biography of the largest Russian-Estonian architect at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries A. Poleshchuk and retrospectivism in Russian church architecture at the beginning of the twentieth century, which was his main creative method. The works and biography of the great master are still poorly studied, scientific publications are practically not devoted to him. At the same time, being a pupil of the St Petersburg Academy of Arts, the architect was awarded the title of architecture academic, the position of professor, proved himself in the capital as the author of such monumental structures as the Geological Committee and the Church of St Isidor with the house of the St Petersburg Orthodox Estonian brotherhood. He owns the project of the most monumental Orthodox church in the Baltics of the twentieth century — the Assumption Cathedral of the Pyukhtitsa Monastery, where he worked from his student years under the guidance of his teacher prof. M. Preobrazhensky. A native of Estonia and an Estonian himself on the maternal side, the architect made an invaluable contribution to the formation of a professional architectural school in the country. He was the chairman of the Estland Engineering Society and the Estland Technical Society in Petrograd, then was actively involved in teaching in Tallinn as professor of architecture at Tallinn Polytechnic College and chief architect and educational adviser to the Construction Board. A. Poleshchuk is known as an architectural theorist, a specialist in the theory of vaults, the author of the fundamental courses “Lectures on the art of building” in 10 volumes, and a two-volume guide to bridge construction. The article examines in detail the main milestones in the creative path of A. Poleshchuk in the context of the history of architecture at the beginning of the 20th century, mainly, church retrospectivism. The features of his work, diverse in typology and stylistics (Russian style, neoclassicism, neo-Renaissance, neo-baroque), are analyzed. In conclusion, a stylistic classification of the retrospective directions of church architecture of the late 19th — early 20th centuries with examples of relevant monuments is proposed. The article is based both on little-known published materials and, mainly, on newly discovered archival documents from the depositories of St Petersburg, Tartu, Tallinn.

Abstract:
Among all investors in the Chinese stock market, more than 95% are non-professional individual investors. These individual investors are in great need of mobile apps that can provide professional and handy trading analysis and decision support everywhere. However, financial data is challenging to analyze because of its large-scale, non-linear and noisy characteristics in a varying stock environment. This paper develops a Mobile Data-Driven Stock Trading System (iTrade), which is a mobile app system based on Client-Server architecture and various data mining techniques. The iTrade is characterized by 1) a data-driven intelligent learning model, which can provide further insight compared to empirical technical analysis, 2) a concept drift adaptation process, which facilitates the model adaptation to market structure changes, and 3) a rigorous benchmark analysis, including the Buy-and-Hold strategy and the strategies of three world-famous master investors (e.g., Warren E. Buffett). Technologies used in iTrade include the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (Lasso) algorithm, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and risk-adjusted portfolio optimization. An application case of iTrade is presented, which is based on a seven-year (2005-2011) back-testing. Evaluation results indicated that iTrade could gain much higher cumulative return compared to the benchmark (Shanghai Composite Index). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study and mobile app system that emphasizes and investigates the concept drift phenomenon in stock market, as well as the performance comparison between data-driven intelligent model and strategies of master investors.

Abstract:
The author has aimed at unleashing the educational potential of contemporary children’s and adolescent books and the possibilities of working with them in the class setting. The books (the ones mentioned in the research body are included in the first part of the bibliography) are inherently texts of a new nature, they suggest markedly different practices of working with them which allow to synthesize their verbal and visual components while reading them. For this very reason work with them should be included in the educational process – because while working like that a student will master close reading techniques, ways of checking one’s own understanding and will also fulfill creative tasks. Describing and analyzing the selected books, the author demonstrates which reading practices (reading with pauses, synthesizing a continuous and discontinuous text while reading, creative tasks based on the texts and others) are offered by the designer on the pages of the books and claims that mastering publishers’ strategies, if it becomes a professional goal, will considerably enlarge teachers’ methodological instrumentarium, will allow teachers to master new techniques of working with a multicode text and to include the former into the learning process. In the course of the research the author introduces and explains concepts that are new for the national methodology of teaching literature: text of a new nature, architecture of a book – and justifies the need for using them in the professional discourse. Generally, the article demonstrates the need for engaging ‘picture books’ at the lessons of literature as long as dealing with them will broaden the reading circle of a contemporary student and will prepare them for further independent reading of various texts and books.

Abstract:
Preservation of the cultural assets with their authentic values and their transfer to the future is directly related to the quality of the conservation and restoration interventions, and therefore to the training and knowledge of the implementers who carry out these interventions. Qualified workforce is an indispensable necessity in this field, which requires special experience and expertise. In this sense, the existence and recognition of traditional masters -who have knowledge, skills and experience in traditional architecture, construction techniques and materials-, their ability to transfer this knowledge to future generations, and the training of young generations as qualified practitioners are of great importance. In this study, traditional construction crafts are evaluated in the context of intangible cultural heritage, the issue of identifying existing traditional building masters and ensuring their recognition is brought to the agenda, efforts to raise new generations within the framework of formal and non-formal education are discussed, problems related to professional qualifications are presented and framework suggestions are presented. In the study, the findings are based on the legal frameworks on the subject, the data announced by the relevant institutions and the experience gained from the initiatives in which the authors themselves took part. As a result of the findings presented, it is foreseen that the preservation of traditional buildings and construction crafts can be achieved primarily by ensuring the recognition of existing traditional construction masters and securing the environment in which they can transfer their experiences, increasing the application weight of formal education, ensuring the continuity of non-formal education, and employing professionally qualified masters and intermediate staff in practices. It is hoped that this study, which focuses on the education of the people involved in the restoration practices of the cultural assets and the continuity of traditional building mastery, will shed light on the future in the field of architectural conservation.

Abstract. The article considers the peculiarities of formation of the collection of educational and methodical funds of the Drawing Department of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (NAFAA). The purpose of the study is to identify the role of the custodian in the process of forming the collection; determination of special professional requirements and specific range of job responsibilities of the keeper of museum collection of the institution of higher art education by studying the history of the collection. On the basis of the study of NAFAA archival materials and conversations with employees of the Academy, the list of persons responsible for the preservation of the collection of educational and methodical funds of the Drawing Department since 1937 has been established. It was found out that the position of the person responsible for the preservation of the collection of educational and methodical funds of the Drawing Department, during second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, had different names: Head of the drawing studyroom, Educational master, Master of industrial training, Head of the educational laboratory of the Drawing Department. People who worked with the funds mostly had higher art education (or intended to acquire it): they were practicing artists, graduates of painting, graphic arts, restoration, theory and history of art, pedagogical or architectural faculties. It was noted that the process of transferring art values took place between the responsible employees without any documentary support, and the employees themselves were changing their positions almost annually until the 1990s. It was proved that the absence of appropriate position of funds keeper in the staff schedule of the KSAI-NAFAA, which requires a professional education in art history and knowledge of museum management methods, had a negative impact on the preservation of collection. Thus, the museum, which is planned to be established under the NAFAA in the near future, should become a special structural subdivision. Along with its main activity related to the acquisition, recording, storage, conservation (preservation) and restoration of museum treasures, the NAFAA museum should perform an important educational and methodological function. To the typical duties of the Head keeper of the NAFAA museum collections there should necessarily be the requirement to know the history, methods and techniques of teaching artistic disciplines, as well as to have pedagogical experience.

Abstract:
Abstract Principles of possession of the landscape painting, applied by masters of the past, as well as theoretical elaborations of scientists in the field of chromatics, psychology and pedagogy of arts, become important components in improving training methods of artists in plein-air in contemporary conditions. The skills and knowledge gained in the process of pleinair studies form professional skills and improve the properties of painting and composition within the workshop. This studying outlines the stringency of training and development methods of creative individuality, especially in plein-air, where the principal teacher is the nature. The plein-air enriches color perception of the real world, located in the air, and mutual relationship of landscape with architecture and space determines knowledge of the issues of proportionality and subordination in compositions, educates sense of proportion and artistic taste. Improving visual mastery into the natural environment contributes to the formation to painters of the necessity to create outside the workshop, which is a necessary condition for the development of individuality and professional skills of the painter.

Abstract:
The article is focused on the participation of foreign architects in the First Congress of the Soviet Architects in 1937. The objectives of the publication are, at first, the reconstruction of the preparation and participation of foreign delegates in the forum, secondly, the analysis of the evaluation by foreign masters of Soviet architecture of the 1930s, presented in their reports, and, thirdly, the specificity of the media interpretation of foreign experts’ reports. The publication is based, primarily, on the analysis of documents of the Union of Soviet Architects and the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (VOKS) stored in Russian archives. They are compared with official documents, publications in the Soviet and foreign professional periodicals, and with sources of personal origin. The first part of the publication considers the specifics of the international relations of the Union of Soviet Architects, the goals and types of international contacts. It is alleged that the Soviet architecture of the 1930s was not isolated and there was a mutual interest and desire to maintain professional ties between the Western and Soviet architectural communities. At the same time, in the international activities of the Union of Architects, there were two key aspects: first, the study of Western practice and exchange of experience; second, the propaganda of achievements of Soviet architecture abroad, and it was the later aspect, which played a dominant role. In this context, the principles of selection of potential foreign delegates to the Congress are considered and the key task is shown - demonstration of interest to the Congress of the premier persons of world architecture and loud international resonance. The process of selection and invitation of foreign specialists and its results have been reconstructed. It was demonstrated that the Union of Soviet Architects focused its attention on inviting “the most outstanding masters”, regardless of their views, and this approach opposed the anti-modernist discourse within the Soviet professional field. Among the preferable persons for participation at the Soviet congress, there were such leaders of modernism architecture as Le Corbusier, J. J.P. Oud, W. Gropius, L. Mies van der Rohe, L. Hilberseimer, B. Taut, and others. At the same time, a tribute was given to F. L.Wright, H. van de Velde, P. Behrens, H. Poelzig and other representatives of a wide range of architectural trends. The article also considers other motives of the leaders of the Union of Soviet Architects, which determined the choice for a particular candidate. The final list of foreign participants of 28 persons was approved by the supreme power - the Politburo of the Central Committee of the AUCP(b), but only 18 foreign architects took part in the Congress, among whom were F. L. Wright, A. Lurcat, F. Jourdain, and others. The second part of the article analyzes reports of foreign guests (F. L. Wright, F. Jourdain, A. Lurcat, S. Breines, M. Lods, and others) and identifies problems that foreign experts saw in Soviet architecture. First of all, they spoke about the "formalism" of the new Soviet architecture, the eclecticism and irrelevance of its language. They saw the reason for this in the primacy of the artistic and aesthetic principle in Soviet architecture, generated by the separation of the profession of an architect from the engineering profession, design from construction and industry, and artistic imagination from functional feasibility and technical capability. In turn, Soviet architects in their reports criticized Western architecture for the priority of function and technology over the “architectural image”. The article shows in detail how the critical reports of foreign guests were censored when translated into Russian and entered into publications of the professional literature. Finally, the author presents the thesis that neither the Congress nor the participation of foreign guests in it has received wide resonance abroad. The participation of a small number of foreign architects at the Congress did not bring the desired result - the establishment of the USSR as a world architectural center. The professional opinion of foreign specialists on the problems of Soviet architecture was not received and appreciated, and their participation was considered solely from the point of view of strengthening the international image of Soviet architecture.

Abstract:
The article describes the process of training future specialists under the program "Professional education", its features, conditions for implementation, aspects of further development, as well as some of the difficulties that arise during its organization. The focus of the department on how to create a new architecture of the educational process within the program "Professional education" is set by the leading principles: modularity, integrability, flexibility and dynamism, and methodological approaches - competence, activity-based, subject-oriented, environmental – were the basis for its development. As a result the authors presented a model for training a modern specialist with formed professional skills and personal and professional qualities, capable of being in demand in the labor market. The research results can be used in the educational process in the context of how to implement relevant programs in accordance with the new requirements in the educational services market. The rapid technologization of the socio-economic development of our society was reflected in the system of vocational education, designed to prepare highly qualified and competent specialists for the modern economy, science and industry. The transformation of the educational sphere is taking place under the influence of new technologies and human practices that change the social order. The determined infrastructural spheres have the greatest impact on this transformation, we are talking about "Communication Infrastructure": the sphere of information and communication technologies that affect all processes of accumulation and transmission of information; "Infrastructure of production and consumption": a financial and investment sphere, which sets the general rules for interaction in the economic and educational system. The above said made it possible to determine the further vector of educational activities of the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology of Vocational Education in training the specialists in "Professional Education" field both at the bachelor and master degrees.

Abstract:
Theory is usually assumed to precede practice but ‘Practice preceding theory’ is the telling sub-title to Patrick Hodgkinson's essay on Leslie Martin on p. 297 of this issue. It is a full year since we published an extended celebration of Martin's work together with his essay ‘The grid as generator’ (arq 4/4). Kenneth Frampton's subsequent Postscript (arq 5/1) placed Martin in a historical perspective. Spurred by Frampton's assessment, Hodgkinson now reminds us how Martin's later theoretical work can be said to have had its origins in the studio's early work. This thought-provoking reminder comes at a time when, in the UK, architecture's standing as a research-led university discipline remains as low as ever. Once again in the government's recent Research Assessment Exercise no architecture school achieved the highest rating. This was unremarked upon both by the professional press (which was much more interested in the upsets at the top end of the league-table) and by the RIBA (which probably hasn't even noticed and has certainly never grasped the significance of university research). It seems that neither much of the ‘theory’ which so many architecture academics expound nor the odd bit of practice that they manage to undertake is highly rated by the assessors. This, of course, is not the outcome intended by the 1958 Oxford Conference on Architectural Education (master-minded by Martin) which determined that in future all architects should be educated within the research-led university system. But does the RAE debacle matter? It certainly does. Research-rich schools are better resourced — and that benefits both teaching and practice. We need to take a hard look at why architecture fares so badly — and to question its grouping with construction management and surveying. We must also consider the very nature of university-based architectural research. Hodgkinson is right when he concludes, ‘much thought still needs to be given to architectural theory if it is to raise itself from being purely academic — and therefore practically useful.’But take a look, too, at the articles on pp. 305 and 312 of this issue. The first, by occasional practitioner and academic Peter Blundell Jones, sets out the case for ‘Working with the given’. In the second, ‘New meanings from old buildings’, Blundell Jones and another practitioner/academic, John Sergeant, appraise three very modest house conversions and extensions designed by them and by David Lea. These architects have evolved their position over many years — developing, through building, discussion and writing, a genuinely sustainable approach to the use of resources. Their buildings may be modest but, together with their writing, they eloquently encapsulate an approach or theory that is increasingly relevant — and utterly practical.

Abstract:
Problem statement. The Bologna Process has initiated the formation of a single European Higher Education Area. Today's students, through academic mobility programmes, have a unique opportunity to obtain academic experience and professional competences developed during their studies at higher education institutions in other countries. In particular, master students from Prydniprovska State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (PSACEA) under agreement with National Engineering School of Saint-Etienne (France), had the opportunity to access the educational process at French Higher Technical Education Institution and conduct a comparative analysis of the educational process within the study of the discipline “Methods of teaching in higher education institution”. The purpose of the article is to conduct a comparative analysis of higher education systems in Ukraine and France on the basis of data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine and Statistical Guidelines and reference materials of France and characterize the professional development methods of French teachers (on the example of the National Engineering School of Saint-Etienne). Conclusions. In today's globalised world, quality higher education has become a significant means of ensuring a high level of professional qualifications in all spheres of human activity. The increasing demand for higher education, as well as the increasing students number, add pressure to higher education and blur the boundaries between the economic and political sectors. Student exchanges and double degree programs provide opportunities for innovative student learning, as well as increasing the education effectiveness, which in turn leads to increased demand for this sector of public life. Despite the high cost of higher education, French universities are very popular among foreign students, including Ukrainian, as they contribute to the formation of relevant professional competencies for young people, providing greater opportunities in the further employment process. Although the number of foreign students in Ukraine is lower (compared to France), domestic our higher education institutions are also beginning to be in high demand among foreign applicants, thus strengthening not only the field of education but also international economic relations. For the Ukrainian system of teachers’ professional development, it is appropriate to study and partially implement the experience of French higher technical school. In particular, the variety of proposed methods and forms of professional development deserves attention, as it indicates the efforts of educational managers in France to create a pedagogical environment psychologically comfortable and as professionally appropriate.

<p class="Abstracttext-VITRUVIOCxSpFirst">The predominance of drawing as a mean to create and represent architecture, whether in an educational setting or in professional practice, has had a profound influence on the design process. Drawings are so much a part of that process that they can often be mistaken for architecture itself. But drawings are not architecture, rather they are tools to create and control.</p><p class="Abstracttext-VITRUVIOCxSpMiddle">Historically, drawings greatly contributed to the establishment of the profession of architect inaugurated by the Italian Renaissance. They became the means by which architects gained control over design and by extension over the construction process. Control of the design process eventually moved from the hands of the master builders to architects’ pencils.</p><p class="Abstracttext-VITRUVIOCxSpMiddle">The long-held monopoly of drawings in architecture has perpetuated a structural disconnect between design process and the “making of things”. The heavy reliance on drawings has lead to tendencies for abstraction, repetition, self reference and a diminished sense of genuine innovation.</p><p class="Abstracttext-VITRUVIOCxSpMiddle">Design/build as an alternative delivery method focuses on a more intuitive approach based on the creative powers of manual labor and the interaction of the designer with the material world. This methodology has the advantage to re-engage a generation of student increasingly invested in a world of virtual stimuli with the physical materiality of things and promote the creative value of Homo Faber. By “making things” students are designing. A hands-on approach would also meet the needs of a student body who responds well to active learning pedagogy.</p><p class="Abstracttext-VITRUVIOCxSpLast">This paper will present a series of recent furniture design/build exercises where students designed and furniture and small building prototypes with limited reliance on drawings. We will discuss how subjects such as structures, material sourcing and construction detailing can be transposed from various courses and applied to design/build projects. We believe that a pedagogy based on physical experimentations could infuse energy throughout curricula no matter the course subject.</p>

Abstract:
The article highlights the place of competitive design based on the tasks of real customers in the educational process of students of the Lviv architectural school – at the Department of Architectural Environment Design. An important component of education at the department was competitive futuristic design in the form of international and national student design seminars and competitions. The purpose of this vector is to prepare our students for the strict conditions of the need to comply with regulatory requirements in real design and at the same time teach them to experiment freely and creatively. The more complex the project task, methodology, and requirements for its implementation, and the more restrictions there are in the project, the better and more efficient the imagination should work. Participation of students in educational competitive design based on the tasks of real customers helps to educate and study them not by artisans with limited creative imagination, but by master artists and at the same time highly educated professional engineers. In the competitive projects made under real orders, special ones were those that were developed in 2021, because they were carried out taking into account the problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them, projects for the best draft proposal of a new architectural solution and expansion of the functions of the Panorama shopping centre in Odesa stand out. These projects are valuable because they were solved not only in one aspect – by offering only typological, spatial, functional or architectural and aesthetic ideas, but by taking them syncretically all together. Teachers of the Department of Architectural Environment Design are convinced that this practice can significantly enrich the educational process because it teaches students to work in teams, use all the special knowledge acquired during their studies in the field of architecture, create without feeling barriers between educational, search, experimental, competitive and real design.

Full text
Abstract:
To improve the performance of acoustic logging tool in detecting three-dimensional formation, larger and more complicated transducer arrays have been used, which will greatly increase the difficulty of fault diagnosis during tool assembly and maintenance. As a result, traditional passive diagnostic methods become inefficient, and very skilled assemblers and maintainers are required. In this study, fault-diagnosis requirement for the acoustic logging tool at different levels has been analyzed from the perspective of the tool designer. An intelligent fault-diagnosis system consisting of a master-slave hardware architecture and a systemic diagnosis strategy was developed. The hardware system is based on the embedded technology, while the diagnosis strategy is built upon fault-tree analysis and data-driven methods. Diagnostic practice shows that this intelligent system can achieve four levels of fault diagnosis for the acoustic logging tool: System, subsystem, circuit board, and component. This study provided a more rigorous and professional fault diagnosis during tool assembly and maintenance. It is expected that this proposed method would be of great help in achieving cost reduction and improving work efficiency.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to reveal and compare the characteristics of the facilities management (FM) education programs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea (i.e. the Four Asian Dragons) and makes suggestions for their future development. Design/methodology/approach A team consisting of academics from the Four Asian Dragons held a face-to-face meeting to discuss and define the scope and framework of the review, followed by an extensive search to identify literature and information germane to the study. Individual parts of reviews, prepared by the team members for their respective places, were cross-reviewed before refinement and consolidation into the current paper. Findings The term “facility (or facilities) management” appears in most of the programs reviewed, but terms such as “environment” and “property” also appear in some programs’ titles. The programs reviewed range from certificate level to doctorate level; those between diploma level and master level are more common. Most of the programs have obtained professional accreditations, but some are accredited by FM-related rather than FM-specific professional bodies. Research limitations/implications Further research should investigate issues such as the performance of the programs reviewed, extent to which they have met the market needs and how they compare with the counterparts in other regions (e.g. Europe, America). For such research, the process of the study reported here and its findings about the status quo of the programs can serve as references. Practical implications To strengthen FM as a well-established discipline, it is imperative to have the programs accredited by FM-specific professional bodies. Originality/value Providing the first-ever international review on the major FM programs in Asia, this paper is useful to program planners, educators and researchers in the FM field.

Abstract:
The article reflects the results of the research conducted within the framework of the scientific project "Architects and engineers of the eastern suburbs of Russia (the second half of the XIX – beginning of the XX century)". The publication examines the creative activity of the famous Trans-Baikal architect, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts Gavriil Vlasevich Nikitin, who worked in Chita at the beginning of the XX century. Brief biographical information is provided concerning the educational training of the architect, as well as his professional activities on the "outskirts" of the Russian Empire. On the basis of archival data and materials of field surveys, seven preserved buildings of apartment buildings built in the capital of Transbaikalia according to his projects have been identified. A brief digression into the history of the construction of these facilities is given, their spatial planning and stylistic features are considered. Apartment houses authored by G. V. Nikitin are of unconditional interest for historical and architectural science not only as examples of regional architecture of the pre-revolutionary period, but also as an example of the work of this master on a private order. Carrying out projects for representatives of the Chita merchant class, the architect managed to create a number of expressive structures that met the socio-economic and aesthetic needs of his time, as well as set the tone for the subsequent development of the central district of the city. The study showed that the architect mainly worked in the forms of eclecticism, skillfully combining motifs and elements of different architectural styles, thereby managing to form his own, well-recognized author's handwriting.

Abstract:
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is initiated for the sake of managing construction projects effectively and efficiently. However, the adoption of BIM in Malaysian construction industry is still low because of lack of awareness among professionals and Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) undergraduates. This paper aims to evaluate the current adoption of BIM in syllabus among higher education institutions (HEIs). The methodology of this paper is based on literature review regarding BIM syllabus adopted in HEIs. The findings reveal that BIM in Malaysia is still lagging in practice and literature taught for academic aspects respectively compared to other developed countries such as United Kingdom and Lithuania. From the current adoption of BIM in Malaysian HEIs syllabus, it can be concluded that fully stand-alone BIM module in Malaysian HEIs is crucial which consequently hampering the production of high-quality BIM expertise that master in methodology and 3D modelling skills. Abstract:
- Unlike other great cities of Europe, Budapest did not experience any significant urban development before the nineteenth century, especially before 1867, the year of the foundation of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. After that, the city became the second pole, after Vienna, of this important European state. The capital of the Kingdom of Hungary grew through the use of various types of urban architecture and especially through a "style" that was meant to express Hungarian national identity. Architects, engineers, and other professionals from Hungary and Austria contributed to this process of modernization as well as many foreigners from Germany, France and England. The city's master plan - modeled after Paris's - focused on the area crossed by the Viale Sugár [Boulevard of the Spoke] was set on the Parisian model and so covered only certain parts of the city. The Committee on Public Works (1870-1948) played a leading role in putting the plan approved in 1972 - into effect in all aspects of urban planning, architecture and infrastructure.

Abstract:
Online services supporting consumer investing have proliferated during the last three decades. Empirical research has discovered that overperforming investors started to underperform after switching to online investing services. Recent studies have revealed that individuals ignore the decision support provided by incumbent investing platforms, relying on their instincts instead. In response, a research project was launched, with the main goal to define technology, acceptance and service ecosystem originated reasons for not meeting investor expectations. A 'design science master plan' process was developed to identify and filter critical developments from a large number of suggested improvements. The ultimate goal was to enable a self-directed investor to manage investing assets with a performance of a professional, but with better control than delegated or fully automated investing services allow. A sample of live online investing platforms was used for problem discovery. In remote-controlled experiments, ten investors representing five investor personas evaluated the selected services. Identified problems and opportunities were analysed and conceptualised, after which design evaluations were made. Participants prioritised the defined development initiatives in terms of relevance and expected personal acceptance. A suggestion for more modular and specialised service architecture was made.

Abstract:
_____ In New Spain, the temples found in female convents often shared the same set of architectural and urban characteristics and were therefore quite similar. This means that it may be possible to conduct a historiographical analysis of such buildings by applying a typological methodology focused not only on buildings displaying traditional features but also on those exhibiting deviations, as potential drivers of change in the direction of architecture. This case study will analyze one atypical example—the temple of Corpus Christi in Mexico City—designed and built by master builder Pedro de Arrieta as a nunnery for indigenous women; given his professional experience, any departure from traditional features was not likely a random occurrence, but rather an intentional diversion from conventional typologies. Findings will be interpreted based on architectural notions, not using a history of mentalities, nor an approach in the history of art, but drawing from typological analysis, which has been successfully used in Mexico and Latin America for decades. The purpose of this research will be to explore why the author adopted such an exceptional approach for this project.

According to the Estatuto da Cidade (Federal Law No. 10,257/01), municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants must have their growth regulated by the Master Plan, which establishes physical order, planning of the city and directs investment priorities. The image of the city is the result of the master plan, showing the importance of planning tools. However, it come as laws, texts, decrees, and other written ways, which sometimes become difficult to communicate. The present moment of the computational technology allows the elaboration of a set of systems that help the planning activities and understanding of the phenomena of the cities physical growth. This study intends to organize data related to urban planning legislation and show them through virtual simulators. Users are able to verify and understand the application of regulatory plans, how the restrictions and permissions to the buildings work, and to visualize the application of these rules in a terrain and / or urban clipping in parametric form. Municipalities and planners, AEC professionals and the population can use the products elaborated from this research in general, as well as teaching / learning tools in architecture and urban planning courses, civil engineering among others in this area.

Abstract:
This paper presents the advancements of an applied methodology developed by the authors, namely an architect and two environmental psychologists, based on Virtual Reality coupled with psychological surveys − developed ad hoc by the authors − for urban design; in particular, the paper discusses its application in the field of architectural higher education. The proposed method is based on the pre-evaluation of people’s urban experience for testing the effectiveness of design solutions, discovering the unforeseen, and reducing the risk of failure. The method connects architectural to psychological approaches and investigations. The procedure can be schematized as follows: (1) final users navigate the simulation of the design scheme and feedback is collected; (2) the analysis of these collected data is run by professionals and discussed with the designers that then develop the final design solution. In this contribution, we illustrate the application to the urban design development carried out by 100 students of the last year of the Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Planning working in groups. The paper will firstly synthetically present the overall research; secondly, it will argue about its application for higher education; finally, it will conclude by describing the pros and cons of the experimentation, especially in relation to the whole learning and maieutic process and its impact on the design solutions adopted by students, with a focus on the experiential multisensory design.

Abstract:
Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low level of knowledge on daylighting was observed; the most cited metrics were the average daylight factor and the geometrical window-to-floor ratio, while climate-based daylight metrics were rarely mentioned; (ii) master science M.Sc. students reported more knowledge on daylight metrics and regulations than bachelor B.Sc. students, while the implementation of daylight metrics and strategies in projects was mainly deficient among B.Sc. students; (iii) compared to European students (DAYKE-Europe), Italian students showed a higher knowledge of daylight metrics and software (especially as for M.Sc. students), while the opposite was observed for standards, regulations and protocols. Based on the results, a reconsideration of daylight education in architecture curricula is recommended.

Abstract:
Purpose Mobile apps offer construction workers a quick, affordable and user-friendly platform for meeting their information, communication and computing needs, with nearly 13,000 construction apps currently available in the market. This study aims to report construction managers’ perspectives on the uptake of mobile apps in the New Zealand construction industry. Design/methodology/approach Exploratory research methods were used in two stages. First stage involved interviews with 14 construction managers who were registered with the New Zealand Registered Master Builders Association, followed by an online questionnaire in the second stage. The link of online questionnaire was sent to all members of participating professional organisations by their administrators. In total, 228 responses were received, of which 60 per cent participants completed the entire questionnaire. Findings Results show an overall positive attitude towards the use of apps. Perceptions of top management personnel differed slightly from those of middle managers; the former expressed interest in apps usage at strategic level such as improving long-term client relationship management and satisfaction; while the latter were more interested in the apps use at operational and tactical levels such as task- or project-level productivity improvement. Research limitations/implications Though bias has been minimised by giving equal opportunity to each member of trade and professional organisations to participate in this survey, of the 228 responses received, only 60 per cent participants completed the entire questionnaire. This is below the minimum requirement for a holistic representation of views. As a result, the findings might not be generalised beyond the study’s scope. Originality/value The study provides new insights on the uptake of smartphone apps in New Zealand’s construction sector from the perspective of construction managers who make strategic decisions. The findings have implications for policy formulation and implementation in regards to the use of mobile apps for productivity improvement in the sector. Mobile apps developers could also gain understanding on functional needs and preferences of the construction workforce, which will help in development of more relevant apps.

While the acoustic performance goals of a recording studio in an academic setting have much in common with those of a commercial studio, the school diverges quickly from the business. The owner, users, and activities unique to the academy shift and expand priorities, motivating additionaldesign features. Students of audio learn to practice critical thinking informed by critical listening. It is not enough, however, that recording studios for education offer spaces withbest-in-class acoustics for listening and sound recording. Present and future generations of creative recordists must master problem solving that includes acoustic sleuthing, exploring a deliberately wide vocabulary of sonic spaces on campus to prepare them for success working in the wide range of architectural forms that await them in the course of future professional work. The snapshot of acoustic features presented here is the current solution to the ever-evolving curricular demands of one successful sound recording program.
