Abstract:
Background: sage is a form of touch therapy that functions as an important treatment technique that has been known for a long time. In the community, the role of baby massage is still held by traditional birth attendants. Even though baby massage has great benefits for babies, many mothers don't massage their babies independently. The implementation of baby massage is done when their baby is sick or fussy, and as a routine for baby care after birth. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the mother's experience about massaging her baby in Sumberejo Village, Trucuk District, Bojonegoro Regency. Methods: The design in this study uses qualitative research. The selected participants are mothers who have toddlers under the age of 1 year with a total of 10 participants. Participants were taken using purposive sampling technique. Location and Time The research was conducted in the village of Sumberejo, Trucuk District, Bojonegoro Regency. The time of the study was carried out in May-July 2021. The research instrument used in this study was an interview result sheet. Results: Participants in this study amounted to 10 people who were selected based on inclusion criteria. There are 5 themes that have been concluded, namely (1) an overview of baby massage (2) when the baby should be massaged (3) where the mother massages the baby (4) the baby's response after being massaged (5) how often the mother massages her baby. Conclusion: The results showed that more mothers massaged their babies to traditional birth attendants than to professionals and the baby's response after massage was more comfortable and less fussy.

Abstract:
This narrative review on the massage therapy literature from the years 2020 to 2023 includes 49 studies. Many of these are focused on massage reducing prenatal depression and anxiety, increasing brain maturation in preterm neonates and on reducing jaundice in full-term newborns. Pediatric massage research has been focused on cerebral palsy and adult research on arthritis pain. Studies on older adults include the reduction of anxiety and depression in victims of stroke, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Other studies found positive effects of self-massage as well as couples’ massage that suggests that both the massager and “massagee” experience reduced stress. Surprisingly, most of the entries in the literature have been proposed protocols for studies and only one has involved potential underlying mechanisms for the positive effects of massage therapy.

"Differential Effects of Classical vs. Sports Massage on Erector Spinae and Upper Trapezius Muscle Stiffness: A Shear-Wave Elastography Study in Young Women." Abstract:
Classical and sports massages are commonly used interventions, but their comparative effects on muscle stiffness remain unclear. Classical massage is more general and uses light to moderate pressure, and its main purpose is relaxation. Sports massage, on the other hand, is more specialized and targets the unique needs of massaged individuals using moderate to firm pressure. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of classical and sports massages on the stiffness of the erector spinae (ES) and upper trapezius (UT) muscles. Fifteen recreationally active young women, aged 22.9 ± 1.2 years, underwent a randomized cross-over study (with three conditions). Participants received either a five-minute classical or sports massage or a passive rest as a control on distinct days. Muscle stiffness was assessed using shear-wave elastography. The ES shear modulus displayed a significant time effect (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.515) without noticeable differences between the conditions, and the time × massage-type interactions approached statistical significance (F = 2.014; p = 0.073). There was also a large and statistically significant effect of the time on the UT (F = 11.127; p < 0.001; η2 = 0.443). We could not prove that classical and sports massages reduced muscle stiffness. The absence of significant differences might be attributed to the specific intervention parameters (massage duration of 5 min) and the small, only young women sample size. Given some tendencies towards significant effects, larger sample sizes are needed to further investigate this research question.

Abstract:
Context: Roller massagers are used as a recovery and rehabilitative tool to initiate muscle relaxation and improve range of motion (ROM) and muscular performance. However, research demonstrating such effects is lacking. Objective: To determine the effects of applying a roller massager for 20 and 60 seconds on knee-joint ROM and dynamic muscular performance. Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial. Setting: University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Ten recreationally active men (age = 26.6 ± 5.2 years, height = 175.3 ± 4.3 cm, mass = 84.4 ± 8.8 kg). Intervention(s): Participants performed 3 randomized experimental conditions separated by 24 to 48 hours. In condition 1 (5 repetitions of 20 seconds) and condition 2 (5 repetitions of 60 seconds), they applied a roller massager to the quadriceps muscles. Condition 3 served as a control condition in which participants sat quietly. Main Outcome Measure(s): Visual analog pain scale, electromyography (EMG) of the vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris during roller massage and lunge, and knee-joint ROM. Results: We found no differences in pain between the 20-second and 60-second roller-massager conditions. During 60 seconds of roller massage, pain was 13.5% (5.7 ± 0.70) and 20.6% (6.2 ± 0.70) greater at 40 seconds and 60 seconds, respectively, than at 20 seconds (P < .05). During roller massage, VL and biceps femoris root mean square (RMS) EMG was 8% and 7%, respectively, of RMS EMG recorded during maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Knee-joint ROM was 10% and 16% greater in the 20-second and 60-second roller-massager conditions, respectively, than the control condition (P < .05). Finally, average lunge VL RMS EMG decreased as roller-massage time increased (P < .05). Conclusions: Roller massage was painful and induced muscle activity, but it increased knee-joint ROM and neuromuscular efficiency during a lunge.

Abstract:
Introduction: The ocular blood flow (OBF) is responsible for supplying nutrition to the retina, which plays a fundamental role in visual function. Massage is expected to improve the blood flow and, consequently, vascular function. The aim of this study was to determine the shortterm and long-term effects of periocular massage on OBF and visual acuity. Methods: The OBF and visual acuity were measured in 40 healthy adults aged 20–30 years before and after massage, and also in control subjects. Three massage methods were used: applying periocular acupressure (“Chinese eye exercise”: CE), using a facial massage roller (MR), and using an automated eye massager (AM). The OBF and visual acuity were first measured before and after applying each type of massage for 5 min. Eye massage was then applied for 5 min once daily over a 60-day period, while the control group received no massage. The same measurements were then performed again. Results: Performing short-term periocular massage showed significant interactions in time and massage effects on visual acuity in CE and AM groups, and on OBF in AM group, while 60-day massage period exerted no significant effects. No significant relationship was found between OBF and visual acuity changes. Conclusions: These results suggest that short-term periocular massage with Chinese eye exercise and automated eye massager can improve OBF and visual acuity, although no causal relationship was supported.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of different durations of Swedish massage on the static and dynamic balance at different times of the day in taekwondo athletes. Twelve taekwondo athletes who had been practicing on a regular basis for more than 5 years participated in this study. Taekwondo athletes completed static and dynamic balance tests either after a no-massage protocol (NMP), a five-minute massage protocol (5MMP), a ten-minute massage protocol (10MMP), or a fifteen-minute massage protocol (15MMP) two times a day in the morning (08:00–12:00) and in the evening (16:00–20:00), on non-consecutive days. The findings of this study suggest that the duration of the massage has a discernible impact on dynamic balance, particularly with regard to the right foot. Taekwondo athletes who received a 10MMP or 15MMP displayed significantly improved dynamic balance compared to those in the NMP. Importantly, these improvements were independent of the time of day when the massages were administered. It underscores the potential benefits of incorporating short-duration Swedish massages into taekwondo athletes’ pre-competition routines to enhance dynamic balance. These findings highlight the potential benefits of incorporating short-duration Swedish massages into taekwondo athletes’ pre-competition routines to enhance dynamic balance, a critical component of their performance, regardless of the time of day.

Few studies have measured the mental characteristics or even the nonspecific effects of sports massages. Sexual attraction or dislike are among the nonspecific effects of a treatment. Materials and methods: One hundred and sixty-eight high-performance male and female amateur athletes received a sports massage from 15 male and female trained therapists. The current emotional state of the athletes was measured before and after intervention using the BSKE-EA17 adjective scale, whose items can be assigned to five categories of the current emotional state. ANOVAs (analysis of covariances) were carried out to calculate the interactions between the sexes. Cohen’s d for similar group sizes and similar group variances were determined. Results: Neither the sex of the therapist nor the sex of the athlete had any influence on the mental effect of a sports massage. The only exception was when male athletes were treated by female therapists, where an increase in “elevated mood” was observed. Sports massages resulted in an increase in the responses in the categories “elevated mood” (d = 1.1) and “level of activation” (d = 0.3) and a decrease in the responses for “low mood” (d = 0.3), “level of deactivation” (d = 0.6) and “level of excitation” after the massage compared to before the massage (d = 0.9). Conclusions: Sports massages appear to increase the positive dimensions of the athletes’ current emotional state and reduce the negative dimensions. The self-reported mood changes from before the massage to after the massage were not influenced by other prognostic variables, including wait time, age of the athlete or the duration of the run. The results suggest that the specific effects of sports massages on the mental status are supported. Disregarding the aspect of the therapists’ sex, sports officials, trainers and athletes therefore can be more independent in the personnel planning of sports therapists.

Abstract:
Background: Massage has been practiced since around 3 months of age for the purpose of interacting with children, but there are few reports on its ongoing effectiveness, no unified views, and few reports on growth and development. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of massage given by mothers to their 3-month-old infants based on autonomic activity and growth development of 4- and 5-month-old infants one month later. Methods: The subjects were healthy 3-month-old infants and their mothers who were born as full-term, singleton babies. The study design was an inequivalent control group design: 25 mother-child pairs were massaged for one month and 12 mother-child pairs were not massaged. Data were collected twice, once on the first day at 3 months of age and one month later. As indicators of autonomic nervous system activity, axillary temperature before and after massage, heart rate and heart rate variability during massage were measured. As an indicator of growth, body weight was measured after the massage. As an indicator of development, mothers were asked to respond to a questionnaire (KIDS). The axillary temperature, rate of change in heart rate and heart rate variability, and KIDS scores were compared on the first day and one month later. Results: Axillary temperature and LF/HF ratio of children at 1 month were significantly lower after massage (p<0.05). Overall developmental age and expressive language domain of KIDS at 1 month were more developmental than in the non-massage group (p<0.05). Heart rate and HF were not significantly different after 1 month. Conclusion: It was found that when children received massage from their mothers for one-month, cardiac sympathetic nerve function was suppressed and the development of expressive language skills was promoted.

Abstract:
Background: Childbirth is the effort or process of expelling a full-term baby which is often accompanied by pain caused by contractions in the uterus. From the research results, it was found that 32% of 300 women who gave birth during the active phase experienced severe pain, 57% moderate pain, and 11% mild pain. Evidence shows that fear of vaginal childbirth and anxiety experienced by many women during their pregnancy. Therefore, it then led to their decision to choose other methods of birth such as Section Caesarea (SC). The effects of anxiety during labor could potentially result in excessive levels of catecholamines causing decreased blood flow to the uterus, decreased uterine contractions, decreased blood flow to the placenta, decreased oxygen available to the fetus, and can increase the length of labor. One of alternative methods of dealing with pain during the labor process is using non-pharmacological such as endorphin massage and oxytocin massage. Purpose: The aim of this literature study was to present information about the effect of endorphin massage and oxytocin massage on the intensity of pain among mothers giving birth. Methods: This research method was a literature review study. Journal searches were carried out by applying online database such as ScienceDirect, Google scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, Portal Garuda. Articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: The study investigated the influence of endorphin and oxytocin massages on pain intensity in maternity mothers during childbirth, revealing a significant reduction in pain levels following the administration of these massages. Both endorphin and oxytocin massages were found to alleviate pain, induce relaxation, and promote feelings of comfort and calmness, thereby facilitating a smoother birth process. Conclusion: The influence of endorphin massage and oxytocin massage is useful in reducing pain in maternity mothers

Abstract:
This paper aims to succinctly summarize the existing body of literature concerning the effects of massage on sports and exercise performance, particularly focusing on motor skills, neurophysiological factors, and psychological factors. The review adheres to the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis) and encompasses a total of 76 articles. The findings suggest that, on the whole, massages do not exert a significant influence on motor skills, except for flexibility. Nevertheless, some studies propose that favorable changes in muscle force and muscular strength may be noticeable 48 hours after undergoing a massage. Regarding neurophysiological aspects, massages do not seem to impact factors such as clearance of blood lactate, circulation in the muscle, blood circulation, temperature in the muscle tissue, or activation of muscles. However, there is substantiated evidence supporting the idea that massages can alleviate pain and mitigate delayed-onset muscle soreness, potentially by reducing creatine kinase enzyme levels and through psychological processes. Additionally, the review underscores the psychological advantages of massage. It is documented that massage treatments lead to a reduction in feelings of depression, stress, anxiety, and perceived fatigue while simultaneously fostering enhancements in mood, relaxation, and opinion about recovery states. Massages may not have a direct impact on certain performance aspects, but they offer notable psychological benefits for sports, and exercise performance is questionable. They also play an indirect role as an important tool for promoting focus, relaxation, and recovery in athletes. Massages can aid athletes in staying mentally and physically prepared during competitions or training sessions.

Abstract:
The scientific work is devoted to the development and substantiation of the technique of deep reflex muscle massage (DRMM) to restore the function of the shoulder joint in traumatic injuries of the upper extremity participants in combatants. The results of the analysis of sources of information, scientific researches and practical experience of authors concerning urgency of a problem and application of DRMM at 250 persons with limitations of function of a shoulder joint of various genesis are generalized. The main distinctive features of the proposed DRMM are the application of the site and the method of massage. The procedure plan (except for the neck area and the girdle of the upper extremities) includes massage of the lumbar region, thorough massage of the spine and vertebral areas. The method of massage involved differentiated massage of the muscles that provide the function of the shoulder joint: the muscles that lead the shoulder - by a soothing (relaxing) method, that lead the shoulder – by a tonic. Both superficial and deep-seated muscle fibers of these muscles, along their entire length, were thoroughly massaged. Mandatory massage was the place of attachment of all the muscles that lead the shoulder by the braking method. Round muscles, the biologically active point of Xin-she, were also thoroughly massaged. The authors' research has shown that DRMM accelerates bone regeneration, normalizes the functional state of the musculoskeletal system, somatic and autonomic nervous systems, psychoemotional state, physical performance. DRMM makes it possible to reduce the number of complications, physical defects, prevent (reduce) stiffness of the joints, increase the chances of preventing the disability of defenders of Ukraine.

Abstract:
Due to busy working or learning schedules, people spend a lot of time in a sitting, motionless position, which could cause tension neck syndrome and promote other harmful consequences. Massage has been used for health support for many decades. However, there are a lot of different types of massages with different physiological effects, and our knowledge remains pure regarding the biological mechanisms of massage benefits. The question of the influence of massage on functional brain state attracts scientific interest as massage is an available and attractive health-supporting tool. Particular types of massage had been found to reduce frontal brain activity, but others were associated with the activation of certain brain regions. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of combined general and point massage of the cervical-collar area on the electrical activity of the brain in terms of its synchronicity in healthy young subjects. Through cross-correlation analysis of EEG before and after massage, we found that massage of the cervical-collar area increased the synchronicity of electrical activity between the central and frontal regions during resting state with closed eyes and decreased the synchronicity between the central and occipital brain areas during resting state with opened eyes, which allows us to suggest that this type of massage optimizes functional brain state.

Abstract:
The art of traditional Malay massage is one element of local wisdom that should be given more attention. Various external influences increasingly taint such massages in Malaysia and to some extent changed the art itself. This study, therefore, aimed to identify the local community’s acceptance of traditional Malay massage and their openness in embracing local arts. The study also sought the public view on the future of traditional Malay massage. The paper, supported by the concept of human nature by Rousseau (1967), also collected responses from 200 respondents of various backgrounds through the distribution of online questionnaires. The study found that the traditional arts still have a place amongst the Malay community. Besides, it was proven that elements of external influences had been observed in traditional Malay massage. The implications of the study indicate that a concerted effort needs to be made to preserve this heritage art in order for it to remain relevant and produce more practitioners. Abstract:
This study investigated the alleviating effects of aromatherapy massage and acetaminophen on menstrual pain in Korean high school girls. Subjects were divided into two groups: the aromatherapy massage (treatment) group () and the acetaminophen (control) group (). Aromatherapy massage was performed on subjects in the treatment group. The abdomen was massaged once using clary sage, marjoram, cinnamon, ginger, and geranium in a base of almond oil. The level of menstrual pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale at baseline and twenty-four hours afterward. The reduction of menstrual pain was significantly higher in the aromatherapy group than in the acetaminophen group. Using multiple regression, aromatherapy massage was found to be more highly associated with reduction in the level of menstrual pain than acetaminophen. These finding suggest that aromatherapy massage may be an effective treatment for menstrual pain in high school girls. However, it could not be verified whether the positive effects derived from the aromatherapy, the massage, or both. Further rigorous studies should be conducted using more objective measures.

Abstract:
Various types of massages are reported to relieve stress, pain, and anxiety which are beneficial for rehabilitation; however, more comprehensive studies are needed to understand the mechanism of massage therapy. In this study, we investigated the effect of massage therapy, alone or in combination with infrared heating, on 3 different aspects: physical, physiological, and psychological. Twenty-eight healthy university students were subjected to 3 different treatment conditions on separate days, one condition per day: control, massage only, or massage with infrared heating. Physical (trunk extension [TE]; maximum power of erector spinae), physiological (heart-rate variability [HRV]; electroencephalogram [EEG]), and psychological (state-trait anxiety inventory [STAI]; visual analogue scale [VAS]) measurements were evaluated and recorded before and after each treatment condition. The results showed that massage therapy, especially when combined with infrared heating, significantly improved physical functioning, increased parasympathetic response, and decreased psychological stress and anxiety. In the current study, we observed that massage therapy contributes to various physical, physiological, and psychological changes, where the effect increases with thermotherapy.

Abstract:
Roller massage has been recognized as an effective intervention for managing various conditions. However, data on the effects of roller massage on the dynamic mechanisms of the myofascial and soft tissues of the lower back are limited. This study aimed to examine the effect of the self-myofascial release of the lower back on myofascial gliding, lumbar flexibility, and abdominal trunk muscle strength using a roller massager. This crossover study included 24 college athletes who underwent three interventions—roller massage, static stretching, and control (rest). Before and after the intervention, lumbar and fascial gliding were evaluated using ultrasonography. Long-seat anteflexion (lumbar flexibility) and abdominal trunk muscle strength were assessed. The movement velocities of the subcutaneous tissue and the multifidus muscle over time were calculated using echo video analysis software, and gliding was estimated using the cross-correlation coefficient between the velocities. Gliding, lumbar flexibility, and abdominal trunk muscle strength showed significant intervention-by-time interactions. Roller massage significantly improved gliding, lumbar flexibility, and abdominal trunk muscle strength. The self-myofascial release of the lower back using a roller massager improved the lumbar/fascia gliding, lumbar flexibility, and abdominal trunk muscle strength compared to static stretching.

Abstract:
Purpose It is generally accepted that massage can provide a lot of benefits to human health, especially for the brain functions. Little is known about the effect of unilateral massage on the brain activities. Nowadays, Swedish massage is a modern massage technique that is popular in both treatment and research fields. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of unilateral Swedish massage on brain activities with electroencephalography (EEG) recording. Design/methodology/approach In total, 18 healthy adult participants (5 men, 13 women) aged between 22 and 36 years were massaged over one side of arm, forearm, hand, neck and face. Then the same procedures were repeated to another side of the body. EEG was recorded before (baseline) and during each massage condition. The absolute power of four common brain waves consisting of δ (0.5-4 Hz), θ (4-8 Hz), α (8-13 Hz), and β activities (13-30 Hz) from the quantitative EEG analysis between baseline and each massage condition were used to compare with the paired t-test. Findings The study found the reduction of δ and θ powers over bilateral frontal, fronto-central, and central areas. The increments of α power over the similar brain areas were also observed. These findings indicated the generalized effect of unilateral Swedish massage for inducing relaxation. Moreover, the significant reduction of β power was also found over right central area when left-arm massage was applied. This finding revealed the initial inhibitory effect of Swedish massage over right somatosensory cortex that received sensory stimulation through massage from left side of the body. Originality/value Unilateral Swedish massage induced the inhibitory effect at the contralateral somatosensory cortex and then produced the generalized effect which is compatible with relaxation.

The limited sense of sight makes it difficult for blind people to get a decent job. One of the jobs performed by the blind is a reflexology massager. Becoming a reflexology masseuse with visual limitations has several obstacles in learning reflexology. The purpose of this research is to make reflexology educational aids that are easily understood by blind masseurs so that blind masseurs can improve reflexology competence and determine the appropriate massage nerve points. The making of teaching aids is carried out using the Research and Development method with five stages, namely information gathering, planning, development, trials with students and coaches, and evaluation. The results of this study are a prototype in the form of a microcontroller-based smart demonstration leg called Smart Massage Tools. The output of the Smart Massage Tools prototype is sound which is suitable for use by blind people who want to study reflexology independently. Smart Massage Tools have higher time effectiveness and understanding than massage training using manual props.
