Full textOn August 14, 1985, during the long internal armed conflict between the Maoist guerrilla group Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian state, an army patrol entered the Andean town Accomarca, located in the Ayacucho region, and killed 69 indigenous people, including children and elderly, alleged supporters of the insurgent group. The majority of survivors and relatives of victims were displaced to Lima and integrated into the victims’ organization and the Asociación Hijos del Distrito de Accomarca - AHIDA. Since 2011, on the occasion of the extradition from the United States of Lieutenant Telmo Hurtado, main person responsible of the massacre, the AHIDA has recreated the painful experience of the massacre through an annual Ayacuchan Carnival performance incor- porating choreography and testimonial songs to demand justice for the victims of the massacre. In addition, this carnivalesque performance involves children and young people who did not lived the massacre, but imagine, interpret and create their own memory by communicating with the survivors and participating in the cultural production of the event. In this article, I expose how survivors and relatives of victims remember the massacre and transmit their memories to their children through a carnivalesque performance. I describe the production of an intergenerational memory through the intergenerational transmission, which is constructed in the domestic space (family), the communal/institutional space (AHIDA), and the public space (Carnival). Surely, the occasion of the Carnival is a powerful spacefor the production of other forms of memory, and for the demand for justice through participatory choreographic and musical performance.

Full textThe moscow subway was built at four different periods, from 1931, when the decision was taken by the plenum of the central comity in june, to 1954, when the circle line (kol'cevaja) was completed. It is a unique architectural project of 45 stations, which covers twenty years of the stalin's era and leads to a suburban interpretation of the social and cultural history of this crucial period. My purpose, in this research based on mainly unreleased archives, was to study the symbols of the subway and the social imagenary it created in the thirties and the forties. I questioned the double construction (mythical and real) of the subway, through political, historical , literary and iconic texts and speeches : leaders'speeches, the history of the metro in 1934-1935, workers'diaries and architectural and plastic images. All this material conveys to a coherent semiotic structure and reveals the stalinian utopy. I focused on the monument as a social, literaly and architectural entity, as well as on the mythologies revealed by the pictural representations of the subway. The history of the moscow subway can be read as a microcosm of the stalinian civilization

Full textUrbanization has led to a surge in demand for efficient urban mobility. As cities grow, the need for sustainable transport solutions becomes vital. Subways, characterized by their high capacity and relatively low emissions, have emerged as a favored solution to address this growing need. However, while they offer numerous advantages, they also present unique challenges, especially in the scope of energy efficiency and management. Locally, the MEL (Métropole Européenne de Lille) is committed to explore the potential energy savings on the subway system in the city of Lille, underscoring the importance of evaluating adapted solutions on specific urban contexts. This thesis explores the energy efficiency challenges of subway systems, particularly the management of regenerative braking energy. A robust dynamical model and a flexible simulation tool for subway carousel energy studies is developed, with its validity confirmed through experimental results. Simplified models are proposed to reduce computational demands without sacrificing accuracy. Detailed simulations revealed the potential to reduce energy consumption by up to 30% through effective management of regenerative braking energy. Case studies highlighted the innovative approach of redirecting braking energy towards charging stations for electric vehicles, emphasizing the integration of sustainable practices in urban transport. The study underscores the importance of strategic urban planning, energy management, and innovative solutions in optimizing subway systems for future urban challenges

The thesis discusses techniques for reconstructing a film about mass graves in Northern Somalia (Somaliland), the search for unanswerable questions, and navigating the trauma involved in the cinematic process. In 2019, Somalia is just as fragmented as it was during colonization. During the Somali Civil War 30 years ago, the dictatorship of Siad Barre was challenged; he responded with collective punishment on groups of civilians based on their tribe. In Somaliland, this punishment meant mass executions and the indiscriminate bombardment of cities. In 2015, I visited Somalia for the first time. I filmed forensic anthropologists exhuming mass graves and the following year, released an investigative documentary about the mass atrocities in Somaliland. In retrospect, the selectivity of victim interviews and greater emphasis on confronting war criminals seem problematic given the sensitivity of the topic: victims relived the trauma of mass atrocities and in doing so, it may have caused further trauma. This thesis and the accompanying film attempt a more dignified and respectful approach to uncovering the events in the Somali Civil War. The new iterations of the film discussed in the thesis use a more essayistic approach (Minh-ha, Farocki, Marker) and a more temporally-fragmented editing style. The resulting film aims to create a more appropriate experience that resembles the filmmaker's reality and the way memory works.

Full textThe Paris subway system, operated by the Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), has sixteen lines and carries about 5 million passengers daily. The infrastructure is mostly underground and was built predominantly in the early twentieth century. About 85% of the tunnels are built with a masonry vault and unreinforced concrete sidewalls and slab. Some of these structures show degradation pathologies, notably cracks at the crown of the tunnel and discontinuities at the tunnel – soil interface. When civil engineering works are carried out in the tunnels or nearby, the behavior of the masonry vault is difficult to predict, firstly because the constitutive materials of the tunnel are rarely thoroughly studied and secondly because there are few models that incorporate the particular behavior of these tunnels. The thesis describes a model that represents the behavior of the masonry tunnel vaults. This model was implemented in a finite element code in order to assess the influence of nearby engineering works. In the selected approach, an existing model was selected from the literature and adapted to our study: the behavior of the masonry vault is represented by the selected model that combines a homogenization technique for the masonry and an isotropic damage law describing the evolution of the mechanical properties of each component, thus reproducing implicitly the nonlinear orthotropic behavior of the vault; the behavior of the sidewalls and slab is represented by an isotropic damage law. The proposed model, implemented in the computer code CESAR-LCPC, reproduces the failure mechanism of a tunnel by the formation of hinges. Alongside the modeling work, a laboratory test campaign was undertaken to characterize the materials of the vault, sidewalls and slab, and to estimate the model parameters. These tests were carried out on specimens taken from cores extracted in situ. Finally, the numerical model, along with the characteristics obtained from laboratory testing, is used to simulate the response of a masonry tunnel subjected to loads applied nearby in two case studies on the Paris subway system

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the entertainment and its different mediatics supports, concerning the phenomenon of proliferation of narratives about The House of Detention of São Paulo, the prison called Carandiru. From October 2, 1992, the date of the massacre of 111 prisoners by the Military Police, until these days, the memory of the penitentiary complex has been operated and commercialized as an infinite source of stories to be sold in a welcomed and in a vast audience cultural market. The Carandiru, its unknown and mysterious world, as well as the prisioner´s life- experience experience who inhabited there were transformed in a consumption segment which has been able to generate not only a huge commercial success, but also the possibility of variation of the cultural products concerning the prison in uncountable forms, all of them configured and performed in the most distinct industrial and commercial sectors, as the editorial, the cinematographic, the televisive, the phonographic, the photographic, the journalistic, the touristic and of the plastic and scenic arts. In this context, we will study the multiples modes of appropriation of the memory of the jail and of its prisoners, as well as the slides of the book Estação Carandiru, by Drauzio Varella, by different supports, among them the cinema and the TV, in an effort to understand how the fascination for the crime, the trauma of this tragic memory and the lucrative mass culture came to interlace in an intriguing mediatic plot.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This PhD thesis analyses the limits by which the journalistic singularity – considered by Adelmo Genro (1987) to be the raw material of journalism – offers to the intelligibility of complex events which need a consistent contextualization and propagation of the structure of meanings from which the events emerge. To reflect on the limits of this singularity which, according to the standards of journalistic writing, is synthesized in the lead of the texts, the way it was constituted in the coverage made by printed newspapers is verified in the case of the episode that became known as “the massacre of the Calleri expedition”. This fact occurred in October 1968 on the route of the BR-174 highway which links Manaus to Boa Vista and involved the Waimiri-Atroari indigenous people and a Catholic expedition led by the Italian priest Giovani Calleri. The thesis analyses how the apprehension of journalistic singularity was possible from the contrast between the statements about this indigenous people subtracted from the published texts and the facts which occurred within their territory.

Full textSmall businesses (street hawkers, entertainers, acrobats) and dropouts have seldom been studied, and we have taken the opportunity of a thesis in geography and urban development to inquire about their ways of life, their working habits, the way they determine where they settle. Two places in paris where they can always be found have thus been chosen, namely the place beaubourg and the parisian metro. We have tried to prove that a strict organization exists indeed, which is not at first perceptible. In order to really understand the laws ruling these micro-societies we have decided to closely observe these groups from the inside. We have tried to make things clearer by listing each different form of services actually offered to the passers-by in th e centre georges pompidou or to those who take the metro. We have determined each time the underlying organization which intervenes in the choice of specific locations as well as timetables and working habits. We have taken into account other elements which do have an impact on the organization of both space and work, such as legislation and the law of supply and demand. We have noticed how these spaces are organized by external factors, such as the intervention of different authorities (from the centre itself or from the metro), controllers or policemen. We have made differences between those who work legally and those who do not, and we have tried to learn more about the spots where each category of street hawkers works, either selling fruits, fancy goods or sweets. We have inquired abou t their origins - geographical for instance-and the money they earn, so as to give as complete data as possible

Full textThis work aims at the physical and the numerical modelling of air motion and heat transport phenomena in subway stations. The study is based on an approach described by the unsteady three-dimensional Euler's equations completed by source terms. These equations are discretized with a finite volume method and solved by a SIMPLE algorithm coupled with a scheme as proposed by Van Leer. The spatial discretization is made by a cartesian grid. In order to take the relative motions of the coaches inside the station into account, a sliding grid method is implemented. To validate the model, calculations are compared to measurements of the flow generated by mixed convection in a rectangular open duct equipped with an heated plate in its central part. The study ends by some applications of the numerical code in the case of a typical Parisian subway station

Full textThe present study is in line with the indoor air particle pollution in underground and more precisely in the study and perfecting of air treatment process in underground stations. The first part starts with a state of the indoor particle pollution knowledge in general case and more precisely of the dust concentration on Parisian underground. The difficulties of predicting pollution sources and particle characteristics are put into relief. In a second part, the process chosen by the Parisian Transport Authority to lower the particle concentration in station, that is to say electrostatic precipitation is described. The third part is dedicated to the experimental study : it deals with a study of an electrostatic precipitator behaviour with respect to underground aerosol. This study lets us know the efficiency of the process in underground conditions, perfect the apparatus and predict the maintenance periodicity thanks to an experimentation during two years and the number of filters to place in station. This parts evokes also the question of settling this kind of process in a subway line to conclude with respect the efficiency of the process. The last part deals with 3D numerical simulations of particle transport in confined flows such as those encountered in underground stations and tunnels. The particle dispersion has been validated thanks to a fluid mechanics code Fluidyn from some known experimental results. Then the particle dispersion has been studied without and with trains in underground and compared to experimental results obtanined with an hydraulic scale model. Perspectives on the future of the electrostatic precipitation in the Parisian Transport Authority and on development of mechnics code are presented and discussed in conclusion

The Boipatong massacre has been widely recognised as a key moment in the South African transition, yet limited scholarly attention has been given to the details of this event. The massacre is frequently cited as an example of state complicity in the political violence that shook the country during a period of negotiation and reform. This thesis considers the underlying forensic truths of the Boipatong massacre, but more importantly it examines the ways in which the meanings of the massacre were contested by different political interest groups. Analysis of these contestations gives insight into the dynamics of the transition, shedding light on the discursive struggles that have defined it. Through the agency of certain political actors, a dominant narrative of the Boipatong massacre arose. However, the truths this narrative posited remain contested and contentious.

Full textFor several decades, the urban transport system in Algiers seems inadequate and no longer meets the transportation needs of the population. The major hypothesis is that the travel problems of Algerians are fundamentally related and result from a process of urban planning did not incorporate a prospective view of transportation needs. The only effective way to reduce traffic congestion through the introduction of a public transport system of greater capacity that attracts car users. The purpose of this research is to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the future network TCSP perspective of urban development accelerated. The Algiers subway parts of a policy of restructuring the urban transport system. It incorporates a network serving multiple TCSP suburban districts. Mutation of the transit system leads to a reinterpretation of interactions between the public transportation system and the territorial system and territoriality produced by the articulation of different scales (urban and metropolitan)

Full textSubway VAL 206 including several machines and/or converters belongs to the Multimachines Multiconverters Systems family (MMS). These systems are defined by several devices with common physical parts between energy conversion elements. The difficulty is to solve coupling problem (electrical, mechanical, magnetic) before elaborating any command. In this memory, the modelling of VAL 206 is made using Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR) based on energy exchange between physical elements. This modelling enables a simulation model for the global traction system that has been validated by experimental results on an actual vehicle. The systematic inversion approach of EMR produces a revealing electrical, mechanical dimension as well as process coupling. Various simplifications are suggested and we have proved that actual VAL 206 control is a particular coupling solution so called master-slave. Among simplified controls, two practical control schemes have been especially studied. They give interesting dynamic achievements when a loss of adhesion occurs. The reverse of contact law raises a problem of non-linearity and non-stationary. A Behavior Model Control has been used to solve this problem. This type of control has firstly extended to multimachines systems. Its use allows to maintain vehicle dynamic performances when slipping occurs. The various control laws described in this report have been tested on experimental testing bench with reduced power

Full textThe electrification of urban public transportation, such as trams, represents a major environmental challenge. The technical and financial studies for these projects cover various aspects of the infrastructure, such as excavation, civil engineering structures, railway track platforms, passenger buildings, electrical technology, and more. The objective of these studies is to propose technical solutions while evaluating costs, both in terms of investment and operation. The electric traction infrastructure is an important element in this equation, presenting a significant cost. It must meet transportation needs while adhering to financial and environmental goals. The sizing of this infrastructure aims to ensure the line's availability while optimizing costs. Technical studies for designing an electrical power supply system involve the selection and sizing of components that transport energy from the public grid to rolling stock, including traction substations, overhead contact lines, ground-level power supply, and connecting elements. These choices are based on simulation studies that require precise models and tools to avoid over-sizing the infrastructure due to uncertainties in simulation results. Moreover, compromises must be made between investment and operational costs on one hand and the infrastructure's capacity to handle traffic uncertainties on the other. The thesis's objective is to develop a multi-objective optimization approach to improve the sizing of electrical infrastructure, focusing on two main aspects: i/ the development of a railway electrical simulator with precision and execution speed compatible with optimization loop usage, and ii/ the development of a dimensioning optimization method that considers competing objectives. The thesis is structured into six chapters. After an initial general introduction, the second chapter delves into the issue of railway electrical infrastructure sizing and provides a review of the subject. The third chapter focuses on the railway simulator developed as part of the thesis. It covers the general principles, models, resolution methods, and post-processing of simulation results. The fourth chapter discusses the proposed infrastructure optimization approach, detailing the transformation of the business problem into a bi-objective optimization problem and the choice of the NSGA2 genetic algorithm for resolution. The implementation choices for this method are then presented. In the fifth chapter, the proposed optimization approach is applied to two case studies. The first is a simple test case with intuitive results, allowing for testing and refining the choice of crossover and mutation operators. The second case study involves a more complex real-project. The optimization results outperform those obtained through trial-and-error. Specifically, the optimizer can suggest a range of solutions that strike different balances between cost and reliability, providing engineers with objective decision-making criteria. In summary, the ultimate goal is to create a tool capable of optimizing the sizing of tramway electrical infrastructure while respecting technical specification

Full textAnalytical and critical reflexion in practical theology, this thesis presents preferential option of the poor as the charasteristic work of the new evangelization in europe. It is in the loving approach of the outcast persons that the christian discovers its roots (the cross of christ), welcomes its vocation (the witness of the faith) and receives its mission (the role of the ethical vigilance). When the human being is confronted to a limited situation of life (suffering, death) a new word about man and about god arises. This confrontation sheds light upon the deliance of the affective life and the unconscious motivation of subjects. How to do the work of justice without betraying the requirement of the evangelical precepts of charity, without reducing to nothing the charitable structures of the society and the church?

Full textBy analysing the conception and the implementation of an infrastructure megaproject, this thesis will contribute to a better understanding of the changes as well as the continuities in the actual restructuration phase of Indian cities in terms of governance, urbanism practices and urban development, the management of the social effects of urban policies. In India, the twenty on-going projects of metro rail request a considerable amount of financial investment and are associated with real estate developements. As scholars consider megaprojects symbolic to urban management neoliberal reforms, the Delhi metro case shows the decisive role of the central State and the affirmation of its state-led model. Conspicuously, it aims to maintain efficiency in the decision-making and implementation processes by imposing a frame to private investors with specific instruments, and spatial engineering processes. The role played by specialized agencies (in charge of transports and urban planning) in the urban development is more and more important through the direct control of the central and the federal States. The dominant référentiel to manage urban issues is technical engineering which is not confined to parastatal agencies but rather legitimized at the highest political levels. The management of the social and spatial impacts of the megaproject falls to the local scale in the hands of politicians and local communities, far from the arenas where the megaproject is decided
