Rozsa, Jace. "Characterization and Optimization of an Image Charge Detector for the Measurement of Martian Dust." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8700.

Full text
Abstract:
Image charge detector (ICD) technology has existed for decades. However, not until recently has an ICD been proposed for use in space exploration, specifically for studying the characteristics of the dust on Mars. Characterizing the dust on Mars is crucial for designing equipment to aid manned missions. It also improves our understanding of Mars' climate and weather systems. An ICD utilizing printed circuit board (PCB) electrodes, coupled with a custom differential amplifier, is best suited for this type of measurement because of its light weight, simplicity, and noise performance. The noise floor of our particular amplifier is measured to be 1030 e- and simulated to be as low as 140 e-. Both of these measurements are taken without averaging. To further verify and understand this device, I developed a novel simulation method using ANSYS Maxwell 3D to simulate the interaction between the charged particle and the electrodes of the ICD. The results from this simulation are then easily passed to Cadence where we can clearly see the response of the custom amplifier to the charged particle. This knowledge is used to study various types of electrode geometry for improved noise performance, as well as understand how particle trajectory affect the resulting signal. Once the validity of the Maxwell simulation is established, I use it, along with experimental data and a mathematical model based on conformal mapping, to optimize the ICD for noise performance. I find that the maximum noise performance does not lie in simply increasing the number of sensing stages, as was previously thought. The optimum number of stages is a function of the parasitic capacitance of the amplifier, with the greater parasitic capacitance leading to the greater number of stages for the optimum.

Chmielewska, Katarzyna. "In Martha We Trust? The Cultural Significance of the Martha Stewart Phenomenon." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4267/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the relationship between Martha Stewart's rendition of domesticity and a broader cultural trend of the late 1990s U.S. domestic retreatism. It argues that the mode of construction and representation of the "domestic dream" in Stewart's programs cannot be examined outside of such concepts as class and ethnicity, whose understanding depends on the cultural, social, and political context of a given era, a context, in which they become transparent as aspects of the Western (white, patriarchal) status quo. Performing a deconstructive reading of these categories as employed by Stewart in the process of creation of her media persona, the thesis examines what the negative as well as positive reactions to "Martha Stewart" convey about the condition of American society of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the occupations people hold, and the social classes in which they are situated, affect the way in which they form and express opinions. At a theoretical level, it unites the 'deep-structure' macroanalysis of social theory with the individualised microanalysis of how subjects form and express opinions in opinion research, reviving an approach that has not been pursued since early-20th-century social research. At a practical level, it responds to several recent and prominent failures of prediction by the opinion polling industry, and asks whether a broader understanding of 'mass opinion' can help avert such failures in future. The thesis argues that opinions are subjects' judgments about their social conditions, based on mental pictures they have of these conditions that combine the values and attitudes they hold with the information they have about their environment. Subjects form opinions based on these pictures via three 'means of thinking'-personality-traits, emotions, and reason-and express them using two kinds of 'means of articulation'-bodily organs and media. The thesis shows how the variety of occupations subjects hold, and the extremity of class differentials between them, introduce substantial plurality into their values and attitudes, the way they acquire information, how they think, and how they articulate themselves. In particular, it highlights the considerable asymmetries between higher- and lower-class subjects regarding: which parts of their social conditions they are experts about, and how far they are influenced by others; whether they think about their conditions more emotionally or with reasoning; and how great a range and quality of opportunities they have to articulate their views. The thesis closes by suggesting that these findings offer opinion researchers and social theorists clear directions for measuring 'mass opinion' in new ways, and potentially emancipating the voices of subjects whose opinions are suppressed in late-modern society.

Love, Andrew Lawrence. "Musical improvisation as the place where being speaks : Heidegger, language and sources of Christian hope." Thesis, University of Hull, 2000. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:4640.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis enters several under-examined areas. First, improvisatory music will be considered as a human phenomenon in the widest sense (Chapter 1 ), and a phenomenon destined to suffer relative decline in the cultural environment of the modern West (Chapter 2). In consequence, the language in which improvisatory music is now discussed in the West will be shown to carry a negative charge (Chapter 3). Among various philosophies of music in the Western tradition, none appears to have foregrounded improvisatory music specifically. However Heidegger's philosophy, it will be suggested, harbours inner trends which favour the idea of music as a central component in philosophical discourse (Chapter 4) and may be used as a starting point for a re-emergent understanding of musical improvisation as a metaphysical principle (Chapter 5). Improvisation in music will be seen to be linked to the centrality of hope in human experience, and this will be exemplified in relation to certain cultures and twentieth-century composers (Chapter 6). Further to this connection between improvisation and hope, improvisation in a Christian liturgical context will be examined. There is a dearth of existing discussion, not only regarding improvisatory music in Christian liturgy, but liturgical spontaneity in general (Chapter 7).

Lusted, Luke Alan. "J.S. Bach's BWV 232: Augmented Sixth Chords in the Symbolum Nicenum as Structural and Theological Unifying Factors." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/347162.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of the present research is to examine Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) use of augmented sixth chords in the Symbolum Nicenum portion of his Mass in B Minor, BWV 232, as structural and theological unifying factors. Previous scholarly research has focused on other composers' settings of the Crucifixus text and detailed the conventions of chromatic harmony that many have incorporated in their works. Analysis of Bach's works dealing with Christ's crucifixion indicates that Bach was aware of both the augmented sixth chord and the conventions such a chord provided in service of Affekt. Further investigation of Bach's placement of these augmented sixth chords in the Symbolum Nicenum suggests that he intended to emphasize specific theological arguments presented in Martin Luther's (1483-1546) Ein Sermon von der Betrachtung des heiligen Leidens Christi ("A Sermon of Meditation on Christ's Holy Passion") written in 1519. In analyzing J.S. Bach's usage of augmented sixth chords in the Symbolum Nicenum, one recognizes his use of this sonority in service of Affekt for Christ's crucifixion related to Lutheran Passion theology.

Gómez, Ruiz Sebastián. "Wàsi, ver entre los Iku. Etnografía de las Imágenes en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/668223.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta (Colombia) has been a threatened land by the armed conflict, development projects, hydrocarbon exploitation, mining, drug traffic and tourism. In this context, the survival of indigenous peoples and their main resource the water are at risk. To face this, the indigenous communication groups of the Wiwa, Arhuaco (Iku), and Kogi villages have used audiovisual productions, since 2002, as a symbolic and political tool, to defend their territory, showing their realities and narrate themselves. Indigenous representation and self-representation from the cinema, photography and media of communication has taken two main theoretical approaches. On the one hand, it implies, how indigenous has been represented by the Church, the State, multinationals, anthropology, film documentaries and tourism, in contexts of evangelization, colonialism, exploitation and the extractive economy. On the other hand, indigenous self-representation has implied the appearance of what some scholar has called: symbolic resistance, cultural activism and visual sovereignty. This research proposes an ethnography of images as a theoretical and methodological approach. It focuses on the use of production, circulation and significance of images of the Iku community (arhuaco). I argue that the production of photosynthetic images from indigenous has socio-political and cultural implications. From a socio-political approach, I said that the indigenous communications of the Sierra Nevada are configuring new ways to understand ethnicity in contemporary Colombia. These transformations are linked to social practices of image production, in the context of multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism, which has allowed the indigenous to expand their space political experience. From a cultural perspective, photosynthetic images allow us to approach "ways of seeing", which refer to the temporal variables of sensitivity and perception. Ethnographic work was developed through the elicitation of image, in different multi-site contexts within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and outside it. At the same time, an accompaniment was made to the Arhuaco Communications Collective Yosokwi and his director Amado Villafaña in the viewing and production of audiovisuals. As a result of this collaboration, we made the film Wàsi (to see).

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

The southern Brazilian Coast comprises of the coastal and oceanic areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and is a region with the highest fishing potential along the Brazilian coast. This is due to the presence of several water masses that interact form a complex, dynamic and highly productive system. Mixing is also provided by thermohaline fronts, upwelling and wind. The present work presents a diagnosis, using hydrochemical data, between Santa Marta Shelf (SC) and Albardão (RS) (33 oceanographic stations) to determine biological production and other oceanographical processes. During the 2005 winter there were higher nutrients concentrations in Albardão zone, due to less influence of Tropical Water. There is high productivity in the region due to mixing of water masses by proximity to Subtropical Convergence, intrusion of the Subtropical Water on to the Shelf (through the paleochannel), formation of Subtropical Shelf Front, groundwater transport, cold fronts discharge from Prata River, Patos Lagoon.
