Abstract:
The article raises the problems of modern journalism, denotes such concepts as mass communication, media, media criticism. In the authors' opinion, media criticism is an invitation to the reader to a discussion, an open conversation, an appeal to pressing socio-political problems, publication of an alternative opinion that is necessary for any free society. Media criticism acts as a science, where both analysis, synthesis and forecast are present. The social importance of media criticism is underlined. It is noted that mass media criticism is no less important than professional media criticism. According to the authors, non-professionals in journalism can act from critical positions and are quite professional in relation to the media, for example, sociologists, economists, politicians. The authors analyze the current state of critical analytics in various media and communication. In detail, the research is undertaken with respect to the journal «Journalist» and «Novaya Gazeta», which present various aspects of media analysis. The authors tried to find out what has changed in journalism over the past few years? What is the status of journalistic criticism today? On the basis of the analysis, conclusions were drawn that the publications in «Novaya Gazeta» can be attributed to professional criticism, since the authors themselves are a representative of the journalistic profession. On the other hand, the media criticism of «Novaya Gazeta» can be called mass, since it is addressed to civil society. An example of professional criticism is, with full justification, the publications of the journal «Journalist», since academic criticism presupposes a scientific analysis based on theoretical comprehension, the ability to correlate social problems with their reflection in media products.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the study of the history and theory of media criticism in Germany and the importance of the phenomenon of media criticism for the development and successful functioning of the mass media in German-speaking countries. The theoretical preconditions for the development of media criticism in Germany and its historical stages play an important role in understanding the modern institution of media criticism and the mechanisms of its impact on the recipient. Media criticism has existed since the media themselves appeared, and the existence and emergence of new media is always accompanied by positive or negative feedback on them. The development of the media inevitably leads to their criticism. The article considers media criticism as a global criticism of the media and as a study of individual specific phenomena in the media environment. The estimated role of media criticism is recognized by German-speaking researchers as one of the main functions. And it must be understood that media criticism provides an opportunity for a reasoned discussion about the media, without which neither the existence of the media, nor indeed the society as a whole is possible. Media criticism generates an open discussion and thereby contributes to the enlightenment of society. To some extent, setting norms and standards for the quality of journalism, it forms ethical boundaries of communication, both for journalists and for the audience. The stages of development of media criticism in Germany, described in the article, cover the period from the late 1980s to the present. The main subsystems of mass media are considered: television media criticism, media criticism on the radio, in print media, media criticism in the Internet space. Thanks to this, we get a full picture of the formation and development of media criticism in Germany.

Abstract:
Media criticism is an area of modern journalism that provides critical cognition and assessment of socially significant, relevant aspects of information production in the media. Media criticism studies and evaluates the mobile complex of the diverse relationships of the print and electronic press with the media audience and society as a whole, contributes to the introduction of social and professional adjustments to the activities of the print and electronic press. Abstract:
Mass media has the power to build a discourse on public discussion. This strength should be used in carrying out its function as a watchdog in democratic practice. The mass media must break away in a position as part of the executive or legislative because he himself is the fourth force in the pillar of democracy. In the 2019 Indonesian Presidential Election (Pilpres) the mass media showed practices that weakened this position with the presence of affiliated media owners or even became part of the political parties supporting one of the candidate pairs in the 2019 Presidential Election. This paper is critical thinking about how politics mainstream mass media in Indonesia in polarizing support to candidate pairs. The data are collected through observation of media content and in-depth interviews with informants from media workers and informants who have competence in the field of mass media. The results of the study show that mainstream mass media tends to still be positioned as the main source of information in the five-year democracy event. The preaching of mainstream mass media still shows partiality to certain candidate pairs by not expressing criticism and vice versa often showing criticism on other candidate pairs. The mass media that have affiliations to political parties tend to show partiality to the authorities and ignore the critical role in overseeing government practices. The oligarchy of the media industry in Indonesia has not shown the role of overseeing the social and political environment.

Abstract:
This paper explores the discourses of emigration in a South African daily newspaper from 1988 to 2001, and discusses the implications of these discourses on the way in which emigration is constructed within South African society In this paper, Potter and Wetherell 's (1987) approach to discourse analysis is utilized. It makes use of interpretative repertoires, to explore the functions and consequences of the discourses. The discursive framework thereby reveals the different subject positions related to nationalism, race and class. It is argued that economics and notions of culture and social class, do more than provide a useful medium through which the phenomenon of emigration can be understood. They also support the affirmations of certain groups of people above others, by claiming that emigration is unpatriotic and disloyal. This paper concludes by identifying the negative connotations of media discourses in the construction of emigration and acknowledges that many alternate constructions are silenced in this matter.

Sex and the City was a television show that aired on Home Box Office from 1998-2004. The tv show succeeded because of feminist's wanting a modern woman's drama rich in episodes about consumption, women's sexuality, financial independence, fashion and contemporary relationship dynamics. The characters captured and perpetuated just that. The modern take on the ideologies that drive women's perception of personal fulfillment, body image, consumerism, social behavior and values and romantic relationship dynamics made this tv show the phenomena that it became.

Abstract:
Videogames with violent content have been the target of criticism from scientists, politicians, and the media for over a quarter of a century. While recent scientific investigations of the association between game violence and real-world violence are now much less confident than they once were, this criticism has continued to be a dependable talking point in the media, particularly on the occasion of violent events such as mass shootings. This chapter examines recent claims that this worry is a case of a moral panic that is at least partly sustained by the political capital inherent in the moralisation of popular entertainment. It argues that the moral criticism of games frequently betrays class-based moral and aesthetic attitudes, and that it employs the idea of “protecting the children” as a means of regulating adult play. The chapter also investigates if this moralism may act as a distraction from other significant social dangers and if it represents a misdirected overstepping of valid social concerns about violence more generally.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses J.K. Rowling's The Cuckoo's Calling (2013). The Cuckoo's Calling has criminological value in illuminating the connections among media capital, mediated culture, and elitism, but its contribution to cultural criminology is the way in which the narrative event stages celebrity culture as exacerbating elitism. The novel opens with the impact of the media on the police investigation and closes with the impact of solving the case on Strike, both professionally and personally. The chapter suggests that The Cuckoo's Calling is an anti-elitist act that deploys a very similar model of mass media critique. More specifically, the extra-representational dimension of the novel reveals that celebrity culture exacerbates rather than alleviates elitism, aggravating the difference between the upper and lower class conditions by means of media capital.

Abstract Although Seldes produced no major works during the final decade of his career, he wrote a number of extended essays that epitomized and emended his enduring concerns with the mass media and public entertainment. There is a sense in which his professional life unraveled during the 1960s: He did not complete a projected work on the social consequences of advertising; he underwent a challenging but sometimes difficult period as founding dean of the Annenberg School of Communications at Penn; and when interruptions and illhealth did not dog him, he wrestled intensely with a memoir that he never pulled together, an attempt at coming to terms with his major endeavors and the cultural transformations he had witnessed.

Abstract:
With the increased integration in the 21st century of the internet and digital technologies into our daily interactions and ways of engagement with life, new audience profiles emerged for mass media consumerism. Viewers are becoming more involved in the process of media dissemination with a hands-on attitude that creates a plethora of possibilities for the “afterlife”- as Walter Benjamin might have called it- of media products. Research on contemporary reception trends refers in this vein to such concepts as media convergence, participatory culture and civic engagement. Participation on the part of the audience, which can be traced back to fandom activities that had been emerging in the media consumption trends of the late 1980s and early 1990s, has increased to become a feature of today’s digital culture (Jenkins, 2006; Orrego-Carmona, 2018). The ability to determine, to some degree, the afterlife of a media product has endowed the audience with a certain power (albeit a relative one) that signalled “uneasy convergences of the market and non-market modes of cultural production” (Burgess & Green, 2009, p. 75). The appropriation of mass media products using amateur skills and the incorporation therefore of “folk culture practices” (Jenkins, 2006, p. 246) into the experience of media consumerism indicated a bottom-up, grassroots involvement with what previously had been accessible only to the central authorities and the corporate production machinery. Beyond fandom activity, such participation has the potential to empower media users in the realm of civic engagement and political activism through “exercis[ing] the civic imagination” (Jenkins & Shresthova, 2016, p. 258) towards, hopefully, more democratic futures. In this chapter, I will discuss audio-visual translation (AVT) within the framework of digital culture and civic engagement and how it can be used as bottom-up new media resistance to top-down mass media production strategies. Regarding such engagement as a form of translation criticism, I will offer a case study through which I observe how Arab consumers of translated (dubbed) Turkish TV drama, particularly the Kurtlar Vadisi [valley of wolves] series, react to strategies of dubbing and censorship that are politically motivated and express their criticism via new media outlets using creative methods that involve translation. I will explain my theoretical framework and methodology in the second part, before moving in the third part to the discussion of my case study. I will conclude with some remarks on audience participation and the role of digital culture in facilitating new expressions of translation criticism.

Abstract:
The role of the media in public accountability has often been discussed. This is especially the case for public sector organisations, whose accountability relations have changed in the shift from government to governance. In this paper, we develop a typology of the ways mass media are involved in public accountability processes. Media can stimulate actors to reflect on their behaviour, trigger formal accountability by reporting on the behaviour of actors, amplify formal accountability as they report on it or act as an independent and informal accountability forum. To explore the presence of these roles in practice, we focus on public sector organisations in the Netherlands. Our quantitative and qualitative analysis in the Netherlands suggests that the media primarily serve an indirect role in public accountability, either by invoking pre-emptive self-criticism in public organisations in anticipation of potential media scrutiny or by triggering formal accountability demands from MPs

The interpretations that now emerged were severely critical not merely of individual priests and clergy but of the Catholic church in general, with charges of systemic corruption and illegality, cynical exploitation of the laity, and extensive sexual perversion. Moreover, the solutions offered to the “abuse crisis” involved a reform of precisely those Catholic characteristics that had so long offended mainstream Protestant sentiment, including mandatory celibacy for priests and religious, the exalted concept of the priestly role, and the seminary system. This approach was all the more influential because there was no effective at tempt at rebuttal, no serious effort to indicate distortions or exaggerations in the criticism.

Abstract:
Being affordable and readily disposable, fast fashion has recently been perceived as a major cause of environmental pollution and unethical labour practices. To counter these pressing global issues, sustainable fashion has been gaining in importance. Mass media has a significant role in shaping public sentiment and influencing consumers” behaviour. This paper brings the results of a small-scale quantitative and qualitative linguistic analysis of three aspects of the fashion industry’s (un-)sustainability. More specifically, we examined the media's vocabulary when addressing fast and sustainable fashion. Our study followed the principles of corpus analysis and discourse analysis. We analysed 1,000 randomly selected media reports focusing on fast fashion and sustainable fashion in English in the NOW corpus. Key results of our study show that the fast fashion-related media narrative is negative, whereas the sustainable fashion-related narrative is positive, with some criticism. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge about the terminology in mass media narrative used to address fashion industry-related sustainability issues. Further, we aim to advocate how such narrative can and should be used as a vehicle for changes in consumer behaviour and company practices and, consequently, how it can impact the attainment of relevant 2030 SDGs.

Abstract:
The prerequisites for this study are criticism of postmodernism by theorists and philosophers of culture, and the actualisation of metamodernism as one of the most popular theories of postmodernism. The relevance of the study is determined by the appearance of a ‘new sensitivity’ having arisen from geopolitical events of the 2000s. Metamodernism theory authors declare the new structure of sensation to be different from the dominants of postmodernism and modernism. The article describes the transformation of the representation of cultural traumas in public discourse with the consideration of ideas of metamodernism and a new frankness. The article covers the methodological capabilities for using postmodernism and metamodernism discourses for analysing the principles of representation of cultural trauma within public discourse. Distinguishing features of new frankness are highlighted. Immortal Regiment action is analysed as an example of actualisation of personal experience and family history in public discourse. The concept of ‘new frankness’ increases the role and significance of the witness. The examples of works of contemporary mass culture and media resources are used to trace the actualisation of the witness’s narrative of cultural trauma. Warmth, depth, and affect, characteristic of metamodernism, actualise the demand for plausibility and personal experience of an event. An indirect effect of these hypotheses consists in that narratives on cultural trauma are multivariate as manifested in criticism of the conventional image of a historic event. Re-evaluating historical events from different points of view triggers mechanisms of latent trauma, potentially making almost any historical event a cultural trauma. The study resulted in the revelation of accentuation of sensitivity in narratives of cultural traumas, as opposed to manners prevailing in modernism and postmodernism discourses, i.e. practices of stigmatisation, suppression, and the commodification of cultural traumas.

Abstract:
Through an analysis of the public space in late modernity, this dissertation proposes to think of graffiti as a possible rescue of the place, in the context of a growing homogeneous mass of non places, as argued by Augé. In doing so, other ways of producing the city are suggested, both in effective and meaningful terms, to the extent that the experience of graffiti is proposed as an act of resistance to spatial orthodoxy and exclusion. Since the recognition of this practice should never be regarded in terms of legality — thus running the risk of losing the subversive quality of the phenomenon and of incorporating it into gentrification policies —, tools are given for the un- derstanding of graffiti both within and outside the concepts and methodologies of traditional Art History and Art Criticism, drawing also on the street axioms themselves for a well demarcated distinction between moral (and legal) and aesthetic judgment. Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
