Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the work of William Mason, an eighteenth-century poet who, though highly regarded in his own time, is little known in ours. The thesis seeks to revalidate Mason as a poet worthy of attention in the twenty-first century. The Introduction contextualises Mason, both socially and culturally. Emphasis is given to the importance of Whig politics in his life and works, and to the influence upon him from an early age of the philosophy of John Locke. Attention is also drawn to Mason’s ability as an innovative adaptor of ancient genres, the importance to him of Milton’s verse, and the relevance of his ‘public’ poetry to modern Britain. The first part of Chapter One provides an overview of Mason’s poetic trajectory, from his popularity in the eighteenth century to his decline in the nineteenth. The general loss of interest in eighteenth-century poetry, and its revival in the twentieth, is considered. In the second part of the chapter, Mason’s youthful poetic claim to be the literary and moral descendant of Milton and Pope is examined in the context of his early monody, and its innovative purpose and style. Attention is drawn to the intertextuality that informs much of the poetry discussed in this thesis. The treatment of the Pindaric ode in the hands of earlier poets, and Mason’s far more authentic one, are subsequently discussed. Examples are given which illustrate Mason’s successful treatment of the genre, and of his concern with the preoccupations of the age. In Chapter Two Mason’s georgic, The English Garden, is examined. Consideration is given to Mason’s choice of Miltonic form, to the poet’s employment of his subject, gardening, as a representation of the state of the nation, and to the poet’s personal involvement in the verse in a variety of manifestations. His success in matching subject to form is demonstrated. Mason’s correspondence with Walpole concerning the American war, his collaboration with William Burgh, and his use of prose as well as poetry for political purposes, are discussed. Chapter Three provides a brief account of the attitudes to satire from the late seventeenth century to Pope’s death, and goes on to look at Mason’s own satire. His satires are discussed in the context of his political and literary relationships with Walpole, Gray, Pope and Churchill, and his concern with the issue of slavery is foregrounded. The individual satires are examined, and examples explored of Mason’s novel and varying employment of the genre in the service of his Whig viewpoint. The Conclusion draws together the points made in the body of the text, and claims a place for Mason amongst the eighteenth-century poets rediscovered by recent scholarship.

Abstract:
Andre masson is one of the most outstanding authors of mauritian literature. He has marked the mauritian society and literary field by the different works he has left behind. Our study aims at giving to masson the place he deserves in mauritian literature as well as in french foreign literature. The first part of our thesis shows the life of masson, his political views and his great love for the island of mauritius. Thess items are useful in a correct understanding of his works. In the second part we try to grasp the whole of his works throughout the different writings. That is why we have thought necessary to speak of his keenness for writing before going through the different genres in which he tried his pen : theatre, poetry, novels and journalism -- the latter was his main occupation. We conclude our study with a brief analysis of masson's search for writing which goes from art to theology of history

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to research on individuals’ general attitudes towards healthcare applications that use machine learning. The data collection has taken place through both qualitative and quantitative methods as a complement to each other. The methods include a questionnaire survey, two focus groups based on scenario-based design. The theory is based on research in the digitalisation of healthcare, including machine learning and mHealth, which is based and supports the investigation. The theory of attitudes and confidence in the digitalisation of care also forms the basis for the study. The conclusion shows that there is a correlation between high awareness and positive attitude when it comes to the use of healthcare applications with machine learning. The general attitude towards a diagnosis from machine learning is negative since most people prefer to get a diagnosis mediated by a doctor. The study indicates that this may be because the patients seek empathy from the healthcare system, which artificial intelligence lacks of. Trust towards a healthcare application is based primarily on the reputation of it, but also in which company or organization that is behind it. The respondents in the survey are positive about contributing with their personal data to a healthcare application if it leads to a prevention of a disease. The study also gives an indication that there is a fear of what happens with private health data.

Mason, Shayne William. "The metabolomics of acute alcohol abuse / S.W. Mason." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5034.

Full text
Abstract:
Alcohol is a substance used and abused by many individuals. The metabolic perturbations caused by excessive alcohol consumption are widespread throughout the human body. One of the primary consequences of alcohol abuse, particularly acute alcohol abuse, is very high levels of NADH formed from excessive ethanol oxidation. A high NADH:NAD+ ratio shifts the redox potential of the cells, shifting the normal physiological equilibrium, particularly within NAD-dependent dehydrogenase-catalyzed reactions. These particular reactions occur within various metabolic pathways, such as: citric acid cycle, glycolysis and branched-chain amino acid catabolism. As such, a disruptive effect within these metabolic pathways results in the slight accumulation of perturbation markers that can be associated with alcohol abuse. Isolation and identification of these widespread perturbation markers is difficult as they only occur in quantities only slightly higher than normal physiological values. Metabolomics makes for a very aptly used technique as it takes a holistic approach, taking into consideration the entire metabolic profile; and, with the aid of bioinformatics, is able to isolate and identify particular variables/metabolites of interest and accredit them as the variables responsible for the greatest variation between control and experimental groups. A novel approach used within this investigation effectively reduced the voluminous metabolomics data generated allowing for more efficient multivariate analysis. Application of three separate statistical models, namely: (1) Unfolding PCA, (2) Cross-sectional PCA, and (3) ANOVA Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA), were used for analyzing the complex 3-dimensional data set created within this acute alcohol abuse investigation. Each model presented certain strengths and difficulties. Taking into consideration the results from all 3 models, the first phase of this investigation confidently illustrates the differentiation between control cases and individuals administered an acute alcohol dose and, subsequently allow for variables responsible for this separation to be: identified as variables of importance, selected and categorized into specific pathways and, finally, labelled as perturbation markers. Through experimental observation it was noted that a large number of perturbation markers associated with the branched-chain amino acid pathway were present within the experimental cases. A hypothesis was created from this observation, re-enforcing the principle that metabolomics is a hypothesis-generating system. The subsequent second phase of this investigation involves a targeted experimental protocol aimed at evaluating the proposed hypothesis, with a focus on three secondary metabolites of the isoleucine catabolism pathway (ethylhydracrylic acid, tiglylglycine and 2-methyl-3hydroxybutyric acid). Results of this targeted approach show a definite perturbance, similar to a very minor inherited metabolic disorder, occurs within the isoleucine catabolism pathway in response to an acute alcohol dose. As to our knowledge, no information pertaining to the influences of acute alcohol abuse (or even chronic alcohol abuse) within the branched-chain amino acid pathway exists within the current literature, as of date. As such, the experimental observations presented and evaluated within this investigation provide a novel and more in-depth insight into the ethanol-induced perturbances within human metabolism.

Abstract:
We study the asymptotic Maslov index for surface diffeomorphisms. Roughly speaking, this quantity is the limit of the average rotational velocity of tangent vectors which evolveunder the action of the differential of the diffeomorphism. For twist maps on the annulus,we prove that the set of points of zero index has Hausdorff dimension at least one. In theframework of conservative twist maps, we show that every bounded instability region has apositive Lebesgue measure set of points with non zero index. Finally, we study such indexin the presence of periodic hyperbolic points with transverse homoclinic intersections, providing examples of points at which the asymptotic Maslov index does not exist

Bellamy, Louis. "George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter as Slavery Opponent?" TopSCHOLAR®, 2004. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/521.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work investigates the often cited, but poorly supported, notion that Founding Father George Mason was a wealthy, slave-owning Virginian who vehemently opposed slavery. Utilizing Mason's state papers, letters, and other documents, as well as contemporaries' accounts of his speeches, this work will analyze those records' contextual construction, and it will deconstruct both Mason's written and spoken words and his actions and inactions relative to slavery. The goal of this effort is to determine whether Mason, who ostensibly played such an instrumental role in the development of the "rights" of Americans, and who remained a slaveholder—thereby trampling the rights of others—was truly opposed to slavery. Included in this work are chapters relating to the development of chattel slavery in the Tidewater, Virginia region from its inception and to the Mason family's mounting economic and political prominence, particularly the role of slaves in their attainment of that prominence. Two chapters analyze Mason's state papers, his writings on public matters, his public speeches, and other related material with a view towards determining their nexus with slavery and his role in their development. The final chapter focuses narrowly on Mason's personal relationship with slavery, and it includes both Mason's documents and his personal actions, with his documented actions concerning his own slaves meriting special attention. A portion of the chapter compares and contrasts Mason, Washington, and Jefferson on the matter of slave manumission. The argument is made that despite his consequential role in the development of some of America's revered founding documents, relative to his more prominent Virginia political peers, George Mason has garnered on rudimentary evaluation from the collective pens of more than two centuries of historians. Not only has Mason largely missed the genuine accolades befitting a Founding Father, some historians have simply ignored the contradictions of Mason's slave owning and his presumed abhorrence of slavery. Others have offered little more than a passing mention of Mason's slaveryrelated conundrum. Some have noted his slave-holding status, but then mistakenly considered anti-slavery and anti-slave trade as fungible positions and then proceeded to extol Mason's abhorrence of, and fight against, chattel slavery. Still others have claimed the institution was simply an unwelcome legacy entailed upon him. Mason, as an historical subject, stands under-reported, under-analyzed, often embellished, and generally carelessly considered. In spite of the effusive hyperbole of some Mason historians, this thesis argues Mason's apparently strong condemnations of the slave trade and of slavery were themselves strongly nuanced, and his actions (and, perhaps more importantly, his inactions) toward his own slaves run counter to the conclusive judgment of Mason as a slavery opponent. Nevertheless, Mason's statements and political actions—however tepid, and however nuanced—represent important work against the pernicious problem of slavery by a thoughtful, respected, and politically well-positioned Founding Father. This work will demonstrate Mason was likely neither the prescient anti-slavery advocate, as he is generally regarded among historians, nor fully a self-serving demagogue. Indeed, the definitive judgment of George Mason as a slave owning, Virginia planter, and Founding Father who served as a slavery opponent remains elusive.

Deiber, Camilla R. "Breaking Mason Dixon's line : transformation of the kitchen space." Virtual Press, 1994. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/897486.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the societal and technological influences on the modernization and design of the kitchen space between the years of 1890 and 1940. The development of the kitchen space is an important reflection of the conditions in which women worked and of women's role in the family. Examining the physical transformation of the kitchen space is the principal foundation on which to build a fundamental understanding of women's changing role in the home. The influences of advancing technology in home appliances and the advice of Home Economists were examined and weighed against each other as to their impact on the kitchen space. Transformation of the kitchen space began with the organization of tasks into work centers by Home Economists. Equipment and appliances were grouped together according to the task, such as cooking. Organization of work in the kitchen resulted in three distinct work areas centered around the sink, stove, and refrigerator. These principles of work organization were established by the end of the 1930's. It is at this time that advancements in appliance technology truly began to impact on the kitchen space. Affordability and acceptance of electricity as a "fuel" for kitchen appliances in the 1930's made electric stoves and refrigerators more appealing to the average household. Electric and gas appliances used "cooler" fuels which emitted less heat on the exterior. This property allowed these appliances to be built into cabinetry without danger of fire, a principle that had prevented the extensive use of built-in cabinetry prior to the 1930's.

Smith, Samuel. "William Mason : nature and the English garden, 1750-1785." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8170/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a re-assessment of the life and works of a major but neglected eighteenth-century poet, Rev. William Mason. It focuses on his diverse engagements with nature as a philosophical concept and in its domestic form, the garden. Broadly conceived of, this dissertation argues for the centrality of Mason’s Anglicanism and Whig politics to his work as a playwright, poet, and garden designer. More specifically, it argues that Mason’s writings on nature during his early career (1750-1759) are statements of orthodox belief and conservative Whiggism, which seek to defend the religious and political establishment of mid-eighteenth century Britain. In his later work, particularly in his four-volume georgic poem entitled The English Garden (1772-1783), Mason continues to use nature as a vehicle through which to espouse Anglicanism and Whiggism. Yet his position with regards to the political establishment had changed and his work in this period criticizes the government and its handling of the American War. Alongside this narrative of continuity and change, three of Mason’s garden designs are analyzed for the manner in which they physically realize the theories of his written work. Throughout the thesis Mason is treated as a writer engaged in a wide range of eighteenth-century debates and involved in a series of networks. The multifariousness of his activities necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on English literature, art history, intellectual history, political history, religious history and garden history. Identifying and analyzing the importance of orthodox Anglican belief to Mason’s work, this thesis takes issue with the methodologies currently adopted in the academic discipline of garden history. Although strong on the political and social aspects of eighteenth-century gardening, religion is often overlooked in modern garden histories. This thesis rectifies this omission by simultaneously dealing with the philosophical, political and theological issues surrounding nature and gardening in the eighteenth century.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past two decades, the image of higher education institutions, collectively and individually, has become more important as competition among colleges and universities for students, faculty, and resources has become more aggressive. In 1979 Mayhew asked whether it is possible for institutions that do not have well-established images to actually create them. This study addresses Mayhew's question by focusing on the concept of image at one institution, George Mason University.;This study examined both GMU's deliberate attempts to improve its image as well as the effects upon image of its inherent culture. Specifically, the two-part research question asked, first, how do GMU's efforts to improve its image compare and contrast to Topor's method of image-building outlined in Institutional Image (1986) and Marketing Higher Education (1983)? and second, to add a new perspective to image-making, how does GMU's "culture" as defined by Deal and Kennedy (1982) affect its image?;The study found that successful image-making at GMU involves the intimate nexus of both academic planning and marketing. GMU's president, George Johnson, keenly is aware of the importance of institutional image-making, and he strives to identify people, curricular programs, and projects that contribute to GMU's positive image. While GMU is striving to establish its own kind of culture, one of innovation, experimentation, and uniqueness, its culture differs from that described by Deal and Kennedy (1982) in that a strong sense of shared beliefs, values, and traditions is not prominent at GMU.;GMU is an example of an institution that, indeed is sucessfully creating an image that is attracting prominent faculty, better students, and increasing resources. The author believes, however, that more attention to building a stronger culture would provide a firmer foundation upon which to base GMU's image. Further study of the role of GMU's evolving culture would shed light on this question.

The process of designing a compensator for a feedback system has no well-defed algorithms that can guarantee success. Experience and innovation are often a designer's best weapons in solving feedback control problems. The only reasonably successful attempt at automating the design of compensators, the Matlab Control System Toolbox, comes from Mathworks. It is an add-on which requires their Matlab program and is costly, system dependent, and difficult to use. My thesis combines different rent electrical engineering approaches at series compensation of linear feedback systems to design a platform independent and very easy-to-use software toolkit called MASCoT. This toolkit allows a designer to quickly visualize and automatically evaluate several solutions to a compensation problem. MASCoT is written in Java and can run on any platform as well as on the web. The software is free to use and distribute and can aid students and others interested in system control and compensation techniques and who wish to evaluate and design their own compensators.

Abstract:
This report investigates function and problems with a pin-disc machine used at the KTH Department of Machine Design. This machine is used for research on the wear of brake discs and pads. The machine reveals an uneven behavior at certain operating conditions, which are investigated in this report. The results have not been verified by actual physical testing. What has emerged from the analysis are problems that occurs at frequencies much higher than the machine's speed but is a result of its harmonic behavior. The problem can be primarily identified around 80 Hz. Structural modifications to reduce the problems are also presented.

Abstract:
The thesis is a case-study in the shaping of a Tudor public figure. It examines the career of John Mason (1503-1566), a notable participant in mid-Tudor political life and diplomacy. Born the son of an obscure cowherd, he rose to become, by 1558, one of the richest officials in the royal household. A man who owed his success to his outstanding qualities of intellect, ambition and industry, he served the Crown in many different capacities and achieved prominence at home and abroad as civil servant, privy councillor, and ambassador. The thesis traces the stages by which he rose in the royal service: from clerk to the Council and envoy to the Elector Palatine under Henry VIII, to ambassador in France under Edward VI, ambassador to the Emperor Charles V and Philip II under Mary, and a leading privy councillor under Elizabeth. His performance in all these different roles is analysed and assessed, as is the influence he was able to exert on events during his career, and on statesmen, some of higher status than himself, such as his friends, Sir William Paget and Sir William Cecil. The thesis also seeks to show how, during such a turbulent period in English history, in spite of occasional setbacks, he was able to hold office, without interruption, under four Tudor monarchs and survive to retirement when many of his contemporaries lost their positions and some their lives.

In this thesis the detector and imaging systems of the MASCO telescope are described. MASCO is a y-ray imaging telescope with both high angular resolution and sensitivity. Conceived to be able to individually study sources in crowded fields, MASCO is an ideal mission to map sky regions like the Galactic Center. A revision of recent observational results obtained with imaging telescopes of this particular region is presented. Also presented is the sensitivity of the telescope for pulsed y-ray sources taking GX 1+4 as an example. MASCO employs the coded-aperture imaging technique, and will be the first telescope to use a new type of mask patterns, the modified uniformly redundant arrays (MURAs). The coded aperture imaging technique is reviewed and interesting properties of the MURAs discussed. This work gives two original contributions for MURA based coded mask telescopes: an empírical rule that says which MURA pattern is convenient to build a mask when we want to make observations with the mask-antimask method and the definition of the rotation center of a MURA pattern. MASCO uses a large number of scintillation detectors. The main detector of the experiment is a 41 cm diameter and 5 cm thick inorganic Nal(Tl) scintillation detector in an Anger Camera configuration, with ~ 10% energy resolution in 662 keV. Organic scintillation detectors are used to minimize the telescope background, and large volume scintillation detectors were built for the first time in Brazil. MASCO uses 12 of these scintillation detectors and the fabrication process are diseussed togethcr with tests for 2 differents types of these detectors. MASCO shall have an angular resolution of 14' in a 14o field-of-view and 20 us of temporal resolution. A simulated image of the Galactic Center region in the 50-150 keV energy band is presented in order to show the imaging capabilities of the telescope. presenteei together with the first laboratory images of the instrument, another original contribution of this work. These images are, to date, the only images obtained with a mask based in a MURA pattern.

Andrews, Stuart Bruce. "Modelling time-varying gravity fields from Level-1B GRACE data using mascons." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3039.

Full text
Abstract:
As an alternative to spherical harmonics, mass concentration (mascon) parameters have been successfully applied to the recovery of time-varying gravity (TVG) fields from the GRACE satellite mission. However, before meaningful mass anomalies can be estimated, the noise and errors inherent in the solutions needs to be quantified and appropriate procedures adopted for mitigation. The uniqueness of the mascon methodology is the capability to mitigate noise and errors using spatial and temporal constraints, which can be adapted and tailored to any geophysical signal of interest. Therefore, in the first instance, this work was motivated by the need to improve the accuracy of GRACE TVG fields by understanding the effect of noise and errors. This study then aims to validate mascons for recovery of basin scale inter-annual mass variability at a 10 day temporal resolution. Newcastle University’s orbit determination software, Faust, was modified to allow for estimation of mascon parameters including: modelling of accelerometer bias values; mascon parameterisation; and processing based on short-arc gravity field recovery and KBRR data. Accuracy assessments were undertaken using simulations in the presence of realistic noise facilitating the comparison of mascons and spherical harmonic coefficients, including an assessment of potential limitations associated with each technique. Comparisons with time-series derived from CSR RL05 Level-2 data validated the mascon TVG field recovery, before estimation of the mass change of Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska. Several hydrological basins, including the Amazon and Indus were also assessed before the GRACE trends resulting from the Sumatra earthquake of 2004 were investigated. While only provided for validation, these comparisons provide confidence in the mascon mass estimates. Between January 2003 and December 2013 a mass change of -83 ± 12 Gt/year and -242 ± 7 Gt/year were estimated for Antarctica and Greenland respectively by linear regression using mascons with a 10 day temporal resolution. Overall, the work undertaken in this thesis provides evidence of the improved accuracy achievable when using mascon parameters to estimating TVG fields from Level-1B GRACE data. ii As part of this work a processing methodology to estimate mascon parameters from Level-1B GRACE data using Newcastle University’s orbit determination software Faust has been established and documented. This leaves the University well placed to continue processing mascon solutions from Level-1B GRACE data and to estimate mascon solutions from the GRACE-FO mission. Through simulations, mascon parameters were found to offer advantages over spherical harmonics for the mitigation of noise and for improving the temporal and spatial recovery of the TVG field from GRACE. The mascon constraint matrix allowed more signal to be preserved up to degree ~35. Using basin constraints, simulation revealed that the constraint matric can be tuned to recovery the gravity changes resulting from any geophysical phenomena of interest. Basin constraints were found to optimise the signal recovery of GLDAS and a known mass change signal over Antarctica and Greenland. A novel way to create realistic noise and errors in the KBRR measurement was also documented. Generating monthly and 10 day mascon solutions using real data revealed that the noise and errors in mascon solutions is comparably lower than in CRS RL05 solution while also validating the mascon methodology established here. Comparison to published mass trends to those estimated using mascon parameters showed that the estimation of mascon parameters has application in the study of mass change in the cryosphere, hydrological applications and for the study of the co-seismic mass changes resulting from earthquakes.

Abstract: In general, small bodies of the Solar system, e.g. asteroids and comets, have a very irregular shape. This feature affects significantly the gravitational potential around these irregular bodies, which hinders dynamical studies. A first approximation is an expansion in spherical harmonics, where C20 and C22 characterize the irregularity of the body. This approach is used on Poincaré surfaces of sections to study regions close to the dwarf planet Haumea. This regions are where the observed ring. By the technique of Poincaré surface of section, it was identified Families of periodic orbits and stable regions. Two Families of periodic orbits were studied, the first Family is a second type associated with the 1:3 resonance (resonant Family) and the second Family is a first type (central Family). During the simulations the ring particles can be in orbits of the central Family. But the resonant Family can not be responsible for the ring due the eccentricity and position of their orbits. In order to more realistically simulation of the irregularity of the body, a better approximation is necessary for the computation of the gravitational potential. The mass concentration model, or mascon model, is a discrete approximation of the shape of a body. This model simulates an irregular, asymmetric and three-dimensional potential. This model was applied in a Poincaré surfaces of section, mainly to study the dynamics of the region close to the asteroid 4179 Toutatis. Four Families of ... As humans rebuild the world to suit our needs, many of our fellow creatures simply get out of the way-but others try their luck alongside us. Austin, Texas is home to two notable urban wildlife populations. In the early 1980s, one and a half million Mexican Free-tailed Bats moved into a bridge in the center of the city. Though initially greeted with fear and suspicion, they managed to turn their reputation around, thanks to the dedication of bat enthusiast Merlin Tuttle and their own set of helpful characteristics. Their nightly flight is now a popular tourist attraction, and the bats themselves are a beloved part of Austin's culture. Meanwhile, the rare Barton Springs Salamander, which has lived for in the same spring system for millennia, has watched Austin grow up around its home, and has watched its citizens turn that home into a popular recreational swimming area. Now, as the city's growth threatens the salamander and its habitat, environmental activists, academic scientists, and city wildlife managers do their best to save the salamander, and to leverage its rarity to save Barton Springs. The story of each species illuminates the many different ways in which we relate to the animals that live alongside us, and what those relationships say about us-our values, our goals, and how we picture the future.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches Thomas Pynchon's novel, Mason & Dixon, in terms of its narrative structure and sentimental content. Pynchon is generally regarded as a challenging and innovative writer, so narrative is an unsurprising subject for a study of his most recent work; sentimentalism, on the other hand, is a far cry from traditional approaches to his writing. Despite this, however, as I outline in my introduction, sentimentalism has long hovered around the edges of Pynchon's work. In Mason & Dixon it takes a privileged role as the dominating mood of the novel's final section, "Last Transit." This sentimentalism, far from being the retrogressive move that the term might imply, is bound up in a radically reconceived approach to the narrating voice of novelistic discourse, whence comes the unifying feature of my study. In Mason & Dixon, I identify this unity in the novel's referencing of film, long-established as one of Pynchon's major cultural influences. In my first chapter, I outline my approach to sentimentalism and narrative-in the modern and, specifically, modernist novel, as well as in contemporary film. In chapter two I outline my conception of Mason & Dixon's narrator as emulating film's visual representations; in chapter three, I explore this narrator as a "radically underdetermined" identity, who represents, not a linguistically embodied subjectivity, but rather representation as its own agent, as representation itself. In my fourth and final chapter, I examine how this narrator manages the sentimental content of the novel, concentrating on the character of Mason.

Abstract:
In Mason & Dixon, Thomas Pynchon paradoxically attempts to represent America through the most unbelievable and anachronistic figures. Mediation there need be between the text and the world. The first two parts of the work consider two mediating texts, that of the dictionary, with which the novel entertains ambivalent relations, then that of the encyclopedia, and more specifically of the historical and scientific discourses therein. After this approach of the extraordinary complexity of Pynchon's prose, the third part tackles what is at the heart of the text, that place where out of words figures emerge, and where figures show themselves to be the stuff language is made of. The fourth part concentrates on representation in the novel, on the way it turns space inside out, and the work as a whole attempts to point to the thin veil on which the dance of text and world takes place. To point to it, not behind, because there is nothing behind the veil

Smith, James Carroll. "Charlotte Mason: An Introductory Analysis of Her Educational Theories and Practices." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27029.

Abstract:
This study has two goals. One is to begin to explicate the educational theories and practices of Charlotte Mason and the other is to determine whether or not her educational theories and practices are still useful in a 21st Century American School. The first goal is addressed in six essays that discuss major educational tenets of Mason’ s educational philosophy. The second goal is studied through a case study on The Children’s Community School. The six essays based on major tenets of Mason’s educational theories and practices begin with the principle, â children are born persons,â which permeates all of her beliefs about teaching and learning. â Children are born persons' means that children change from within and not from without and, therefore, are discoverers of knowledge not vessels to be filled. Rousseau believed that children come with a good nature, but Mason contended that they come with a nature that is both good and evil, as all humans. Therefore children need to be educated to attenuate the evil nature. That is the second tenet. The third tenet is a discussion of authority and docility. If children have a good and evil nature then authority is necessary. However, since children are persons, they have a right to an education and they have a right to self-authority. The fourth essay discusses Mason’s beliefs about the sacredness of a child’s personality. In the fifth essay on pedagogy the discussion is concentrated on Mason’ s use of narration as an instructional tool. The last essay is on curriculum and includes a discussion of Mason’s views on curriculum and the use of the narrative in the curriculum. All of the essays bring to the discussion the thinking of other educational thinkers both past and present. At the end of each essay is the story of the implementation of Mason’s educational theories and practices at The Children’s Community School. The data collection for this case study is defined by Mason’s educational principles discussed in each essay. Data were collected on site at the school through observations, interviews and documents. All interviews were transcribed. Data from transcriptions, observations, and documents were then coded by the six major tenets discussed in the essays. Connections were examined between the theory of Mason and the practice in The Children’s Community School.

Abstract: This thesis has as its objective aspects of grammar of Sanapaná relating to simple sentences. Sanapaná is the language spoken by the Sanapaná people, among others those living in the community La Esperanza, in the vicinity of the city of Loma Plata - Paraguay. The thesis consists of six chapters, the first containning general information about the people and their language in socioeconomic, cultural and linguistic context. In the second chapter I present an analysis of phonetic and phonological aspects, with emphasis on consonant and vowel segments, as well as the syllable. The third and fourth chapters are dedicated to the noun phrase. The division between the two is guided by the design categories of open and closed categories proposed by Schachter e Shopen (2007). Thus, in Chapter III open categories are discussed, specifically nouns and adjectives, and in Chapter IV I discuss the closed categories that relate to open categories: pronouns, numerals, adverbs, quantifiers and adpositions. These two chapters demonstrate the Morphology / Syntax interface. After discussing the noun phrase, defined by the two types of categories analyzed in Chapters III and IV, I refer, in Chapter V, to the verb phrase, and its Morphology / Syntax interface. From the perspective of Morphology, I show that the verb in Sanapaná bears some resemblance to the noun with respect to the use of prefixes. However, they differ regarding the use of suffixes. From the perspective of Syntax, the verb is shown to be with mechanisms for its required arguments. Chapter VI deals with aspects of Sanapaná grammar inherent in sentences with negation and in imperative sentences. The analysis presented for negation assumes (i) the existence of two distinct processes, one being the use of affixes, and the other the use of particles and (ii) that such processes interact morphosyntactically. Finally, I consider that the content of this thesis does not exhaust the discussion of the simple sentence Sanapaná but, on the contrary, introduces it. With this, I assume that future work will be important to clarify questions raised throughout the chapters of this dissertation. Above all, this PhD thesis is one of the most concrete studies of a member of the Maskoyan language family, which make it a reference point in linguistic investigation of the indigenous languages of Paraguay

Ryu, Soonok.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Masson (1894-1971) was one of the leading architects of the interwar period in Nancy. People are still studying the effects of this historical and architectural period in Nancy and Lorraine. Adopting the classic form of an architectural monograph, this thesis both contributes to these studies and tries to broaden the study by mentioning the patrons. First of all, it focuses on the life of this architect, born in Moselle when Moselle was a part of Germany and whose German upbringing gives his work a unique character. Masson's oeuvre consists of 57 buildings, which have all been defined, studied, and collected together in a catalog, which constitutes the third volume of this thesis. Geographically, they are primarily located in Nancy and almost half of them are located in the famous Parc de Saurupt, the Mecca of Art Nouveau architecture and where Masson invested a lot of his time and effort, but when it comes to the types of buildings, he only designed villas, houses, and apartments. There are no public buildings in his work. Masson is unique in having only worked on residential architecture in Nancy. The 41 identified patrons are therefore all individuals, who all come from a variety of backgrounds and social classes, generally belonging to the wealthy bourgeoisie. This thesis not only looks at the life and work of Masson, but also attempts to understand the relationship between the architect and his clients, an issue which up to now, as far as the architecture of the interwar period is concerned, has not been treated seriously or systematically. It is one of the primary goals of this thesis to try to address the nature of Masson's clientele head-on. For this, the archives have proven essential, but no correspondence has yet been found despite the vast majority of the plans drawn up by Masson having been preserved. We supplemented this by carefully studying the social profile of each patron and by examining the plans and architecture of each building. We were able to identify their biases and estimate the client’s wishes, whether they dreamed of owning a luxury villa or were looking for a bargain property. This study has revealed an unknown architect from Nancy, who despite the importance of his work, has helped contribute to the knowledge of the domestic architecture and the clientele of the architects of the interwar period

Abstract:
Loys Masson, born in 1915, in Mauritius, died in 1969, in Paris. He is well-known as executive secretary of the Comité national des écrivains (1944) and editor of Les Lettres françaises (1947). He is also known as an outstanding poet of the resistance movement, in France. Lyric and dramatic writer, his poems, novels and dramatic works raise many questions about human nature. His best pages are like bits from letters or from a diary and tell much about how he feels. The literary works of Loys Masson have never been adequately explored or explained. We propose a careful search into the life of L. Masson, into the profound pain of his dreams, reflected in his delicate books. His main themes are, rebellion, childhood, and the neurosis of a lost paradise. Letters, unpublished works, statements, editorials in Les Lettres françaises, also form part of our research works. Abstract:
Ignorance of the basic principles of music reading was one of the primary obstacles to the improvement of congregational singing in nineteenth-century America. Six separate numeral notation systems arose to provide a simple way for the common man to learn the basic principles of music. Hartley Day developed his own numeral notation system and published six tune-books that enjoyed modest success in the New England area. This thesis examines Day's numeral notation system as it appeared in the Boston Numeral Harmony (1845), and the One-Line Psalmist (1849). It also studies Day's periodical, The Musical Visitor, in which he continually attacked Lowell Mason, possibly leading to Mason's dismissal as Superintendent of Music of Boston's public schools.

Abstract:
The saw blade producer, Håkansson Sågblad AB, patented in the U.S. a new blade profile designed specially to cut fish and meat. The most important advantage of that blade is that its teeth are not set, therefore the material lost when cutting is really smaller. The special geometry of that profile made that nobody had found a proper way to produce it before. The goal of the outlined work is to develop a machine to produce these new blades in a feasible way. The research approach of the project can roughly be divided into three phases: 1.- Invention and development of a proper distribution of blades to produce a big amount of them at the same time. 2.- Research of the best production process to produce the blades. 3.- Main design of the machine to produce the blades. In the Thesis these three points are carefully developed and studied in the form of the start point of a really bigger project. Some tests had been done in order to prove all the analytical ideas and the results obtained had been satisfactory enough to give Håkansson the start point of a big business. However, a lot of work must be still done in order to begin the production series of those blades.
