"The Value of CD64 Expression in Distinguishing Acute Myeloid Leukemia With Monocytic Differentiation From Other Subtypes of Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Flow Cytometric Analysis of 64 Cases." Abstract:
Abstract Context.—Flow cytometric immunophenotyping is a useful ancillary tool in the diagnosis and subclassification of acute myeloid leukemias (AMLs). A recent study concluded that CD64 is sensitive and specific for distinguishing AMLs with a monocytic component (ie, AML M4 and AML M5) from other AML subtypes. However, in that study, the intensity of CD64 was not well defined and the number of non-M4/non-M5 AMLs was small. Objective.—To evaluate the usefulness of CD64 by flow cytometric immunophenotyping in distinguishing AMLs with monocytic differentiation from other AML subtypes. Design.—Sixty-four AMLs subclassified based on the French-American-British and World Health Organization classifications on pretreatment bone marrows were retrieved from our files (7 M0s, 11 M1s, 17 M2s, 7 M3s, 9 M4s, 7 M5s, 4 M6s, and 2 M7s). A standard panel of markers, including CD2, CD3, CD5, CD7, CD10, CD11b, CD13, CD14, CD15, CD19, CD20, CD33, CD34, CD45, CD56, CD64, CD117, and HLA-DR, were analyzed by flow cytometric immunophenotyping in all AMLs (52 bone marrow samples; 12 peripheral blood samples). Results.—CD64 was expressed in AML subtypes M0 to M5 in varying intensities: heterogeneously expressed in 1 of 7 M0s; dimly expressed in 3 of 11 M1s; dimly and moderately expressed in 6 and 2 of 17 M2s, respectively; dimly and moderately expressed in 5 and 1 of 7 M3s, respectively; dimly expressed in 4 of 9 M4s; and heterogeneously, moderately, and strongly expressed in 1, 3, and 3 of 7 M5s, respectively. Conclusions.—Strong CD64 expression distinguishes AML M5; however, heterogeneous, dim, or moderate expression in itself does not distinguish M0 through M4 subtypes from M5 with dim to moderate CD64 expression. However, any CD64 expression associated with strong CD15 expression distinguishes AML M4 or M5, from other AML subtypes.

Abstract:
A modified polycarboxylate superplasticizer was synthesized by copolymerization of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate (MPEG-MA), β–Cyclodextrins grafted maleic anhydride (MAH-β-CD), methacrylic acid (MAA) and methallyl sulfonic acid (MAS). The excellent superplasticizer was obtained at the molar ratio of n(MAH-β-CD) : n(MAS) : n(MAA) : n(MPEG-MA) was 0.05:0.1:3:1 using ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator at 90°C for 5 h. The applied results show that the product had many advantages, such as lower dosage, longer setting time, better flow-keeping ability and better compatibility with different cement. Meanwhile, the structure and relative molecular weight were characterized by FTIR and GPC respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract. Evar Saar: Finnic personal names with the suffix -mAs. This article addresses Finnic pre-Christian personal names which ended with the suffix -mas or -mäs (joint marking -mAs). An overview of which mAs-names and also mVs-names have been found in the sources is provided. A hypothesis is formulated that personal names represented by spellings -mes and -meß do not contain the word mees ‘man’ as the second component, as many researchers have claimed. Such spellings have been found in the names of Estonians and Livonians from medieval Livonia. The possible pronunciation of personal names ending in mVs are analysed in the context of Middle Low German orthography and text samples. Written mes-endings in personal names link, on the one hand, with the phenomenon that in preserving the Finnic vowel harmony, the letter -e was the main presentation of the Finnic sound -ä. This enables such interpretations as, for example, Melemes (*Meelemäs). At the same time, vowel harmony was disappearing in medieval North Estonian language which means that -ä in successive syllables was still replaced with a. Another and more important tendency characterising spellings with Middle Low German background is the perception of most vowels in successive syllables in a reduced form and writing them by e. Finnic suffix mAs has been interpreted on the example of Ihama and Ihamas by Päivi Rintala. Rintala considers the short suffix mA primary, which has especially functioned as individualising the object. mAs personal names are alive in modern Estonian in a Christian first name Toomas with an accidentally similar end structure and in a new first name Urmas created by Julius Mägiste. First name Armas ( Estonian meaning ‘lovely’) that is widespread in Finland and the historical Ihamas recommended by Mägiste have not become popular in Estonia.

Abstract:

In Reply.— I am confused by Dr Waage's letter. What does he mean by "the literature supports that the majority of meconium-stained neonates fall into such a category?" Does he mean it is substantiated that the majority of these neonates do not require intubation? Yes, 95% of such neonates will not develop MAS, but how does one identify those at risk who "require" intubation. Clearly, depressed neonates born through thick meconium are at the highest risk for MAS, but MAS will occur in apparently vigorous newborns or those born through thin-consistency fluid.1,2

To the Editor.— In the article "Intratracheal Suctioning, Systemic Infection, and the Meconium Aspiration Syndrome," Wiswell and Henley review their experience with meconium-stained babies from 1985 to 1989. Dr Wiswell compares two groups of neonates, those intubated and those not intubated. The rationale for not intubating neonates included (1) the lack of meconium in the hypopharynx, (2) the apparent vigor of the child, and (3) thin-consistency meconium. The literature agrees that the majority of meconium-stained neonates fall into such a category; however, Dr Wiswell finds only 19% of neonates in this category.

To the Editor.— I was particularly interested by the article by Wiswell et al, entitled "Meconium Aspiration Syndrome: Have We Made a Difference?"1 because it is one of the few articles that has addressed issues of direct interest for the "trenches paediatrician." I would like to propose the following comments to the authors. Intubation of a newborn, by an experienced and trained person, is a benign gesture. Except for the occasional vagal stimulation and very transient bradycardia associated, and the potential trauma to cords (which in good hands is probably easy to avoid), I am not aware of any medium- or long-term sequelae of intubating an infant once or twice.
