Pietersen, Sheri-Ann. "An Eriksonian psychobiography of Martin Luther King Junior." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1021037.

Abstract:
The aim of the current study was to conduct a psychobiography of the life of Martin Luther King Junior, who was born in 1929 and died in 1968. He was an American clergyman, husband, father, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. King fought for civil rights for all people. His “I Have a Dream” speech raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established him as one of the greatest orators in the United States of America. His main legacy was to secure access to civil rights for all Americans, thereby empowering people of all racial and religious backgrounds, and promoting equality in the American nation. This is a psychobiographical research study which aimed to explore and describe the life of Martin Luther King junior’s psychological development according to Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Developmental Theory. King was selected through purposive sampling on the basis of interest, value, and uniqueness to the researcher. Alexander’s model of identifying salient themes was used to analyse the data which were then compared to Erikson’s theory through a process of analytical generalisation. Limitations of the current study were identified and certain recommendations for future research in this field are offered.

Abstract:
A socio-historical approach centred upon the restless years (1955-1968) in the united states of america considers the essential role played by non-violence in the life, the works and the actions of martin luther king, jr. This is offered as an explanation of his personality and his militancy. The elaboration and evolution of his doctrine are examined. Nothing predestined martin luther king, jr. To take such an important part in american history. The methods of non-violence, inspired by gandhi, represent more a tactical than an ideological approach in the support of the civil rights battle of the black community. In fact, king develops an original tactics: he recommends both an alliance between white and blach people and a quest, withing the protest movements, for the paroxystical moment in order to compel his adversaries into a negotiation process. Martin luther king, jr. Uses non-violence in order to obtain several laws against racial segregation improving the black people's situation, especially in the south, civil disobedience is also a turning-point in his non-violent tactics. But, confronted with the black riots, the nationalistic afro-american movements and also criticized for his collaboration with the whites, king is forced to revise his positions. His message is still present nowadays in spite of his assassination

Abstract:
This piece of research examines how the speech Beyond Vietnam by Martin Luther King Jr. is framed by four newspapers in the United States. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the existing body of research in framing as a field of study in general. More specifically, the aim is to expand the existing literature on media research regarding Martin Luther King Jr. while he was alive. Entman’s definition of framing is operationalized through the use of a deductive method. The results show that King is framed in a negative manner. In terms of framing, Conflict Frame is the most common frame used by newspapers in response to King’s speech. This is most likely due to the cold war politics prevalent during this era.

Twaku, Unathi. "A psychobiographical study of Martin Luther King Junior: an Adlerian perspective." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020900.

Full text
Abstract:
Martin Luther King Junior was an advocate of non-violent social change strategies; he was a pastor, an author, the first president of the southern Christian leadership conference, a speaker, a Nobel Prize winner, and a leader. Martin Luther King junior was transformed by his deep family roots in the African American Baptist church. His formative experiences in his hometown of Atlanta were his theological studies, his varied models of religious and political leadership and his extensive network of contacts in the peace and social justice movements of his time. Although only 39 at the time of his death, Martin Luther King juniors’ life was remarkable for the ways it reflected and inspired so many of the twentieth century’s major intellectual, cultural and political developments. The primary aim of this study was to explore and describe the psychological development across the lifespan of Martin Luther King junior, by applying Alfred Adler’s theory of individual psychology. Martin Luther King junior’s life was explored in this study through systematic collection, analysis and interpretation of the historic data on his life, which highlighted seven significant historical periods: (a) Childhood and adolescence (1929 – 1944), (b)The inevitable (1944 – 1948), (c) The Purpose in his Destiny (1948 – 1951), (d) Family and mission (1952 – 1959), (e) Movement against segregation (1960 – 1963), (f) History is made (1963 – 1967), and (g) Unfinished business (1968). Adler’s framework was used to recognize, convert and reconstruct his life into a coherent narrative of his psychological development throughout his life. Alexander’s guidelines for extracting salient data was utilised to ensure accurate description of Martin Luther King junior’s life. A conceptual framework that is the Adlerian Matrix was included in the study as guide in presenting the research discussion and findings in an illuminating and integrative manner. The research discussion and findings suggested that Adler’s theoretical framework considers the biopsychosocial, cultural and historic influences in Martin Luther King junior’s personality development. In taking the context into consideration, Adler’s individual psychology identified King junior with a social useful lifestyle because of his high social interest which influenced his striving for superiority. This lifestyle guided his fictional goal which was selfless and aimed at contributing to the wellbeing of others. The private logic about himself, others and the world, which is developed in early childhood, was a positive navigator for the development of his personality and lifestyle. Thus according to the Adlerian theory, King junior could positively balance the resolution of the life tasks of occupation, social and love & marriage. The study of King junior’s personality development has provided an affirmative demonstration of the value of Adler’s psychological theory to understand the process of personality development in an individual life. It has highlighted the value of studying an individual life taking his context, including early experiences, family environment and every action, into consideration to understand the uniqueness of responding to life tasks and his perceptions. Recommendations were made for future research undertakings using psychobiographical research design and methodology to reveal, illuminate and reconstruct the lives of historic personalities

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates the African-Americans Civil Rights Movement, from its origin to its development in the 1950s and ‘60s. Dr. Martin Luther King is the key figure of the two decades analyzed in this survey: the non-violent theory inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, led King and his fellow activists into pursuing a new concept of social equality. The core of the non-violent concept is love and justice. Rosa Parks and her refusal to let a white man sitting on her spot on the bus in Montgomery, AL, gave the kick start to the boycott of buses and the consequent request of equality between White and Black people in public transport. After this core event, the Civil Right Movement gained public echo and became a central issue for US Government. In 1963, Dr King assembled thousands people in Washington DC: the famous I Have a Dream speech focused on the importance to stand up together and boost the non-violent opposition to the dis-equality in the American society. The aim is to promote fraternity, whereas the destruction of the white counterpart is highly rejected. After President J.F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lyndon D. Johnson issued the Civil Right Act, which gave birth to riots in the ghettoes and gave power to the anti civil rights equality parties, such as the KKK and those promoting the white supremacy. MLK moved to Chicago in order to delve into the core of the social discomforts, realizing that Blacks could not compete with the White counterpart in terms of education, health assistance and work opportunities. He had been criticized a lot, since his non-violence ideal of fight could not apply to the ghetto life-style. The dissertation continue till the murder of MLK and with my personal point of view.

Abstract:

Leaders help organizations and cultures not desirous of change to undergo cultural shifts. The current study conducts a textual analysis of six speeches delivered from Montgomery to Memphis in order to extrapolate the sources of his worldview and identify the major arguments used in the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. who shaped the Civil Rights Movement, an engrained culture, and morally shaped others to lead cultural change. King used a worldview-leadership style to offer cognitive and emotional suppositions to challenge centuries-old presuppositions within both Caucasian and African American cultures. Significant developmental influences changed King’s outlook, and as a result he communicated to audiences how to change their worldview. As a young boy, King was determined to hate white people but instead he grew into a reformer committed to nonviolent agape love and articulated moral argumentation from a mosaic of influences. As he encountered multiple cultures of stakeholders each possessing their own set of presuppositions, King expressed a pragmatic patchwork of nearly 70 identifiable sources that appear as core values within his speeches. Forensic textual analysis highlights his core values, consciously and subconsciously expressed, and how he passed the influences along to the audiences. His speeches championed lessons learned from parents, grandparents, experiences, professors, theologians, and Western thinkers to suggest more than a legislative shift but one where society as whole began to adopt a better moral direction.

Abstract:
Religion
Ph.D.
Martin Luther King Jr. is an American civil saint whose life and work blended religion into his civic engagement. Yet prominent political theorists and religious ethicists writing since the Civil Rights Movement fail to make a place for King's type of activism. Drawing heavily upon King's "Letter from Birmingham City Jail," this dissertation problematizes the work of several religious and political thinkers by contrasting their theoretical work with King's life and work. John Rawls is the most influential post-Civil Rights Movement liberal and his theoretical work draws a stark line between religion and politics. Rawls assumes that this division is necessary for the preservation of democracy and he demands that religious people re-frame their political ideas using nonreligious language. This dissertation shows that Rawls's work would effectively exclude King even though King's movement resulted in a massive expansion of democracy. It turns next to Stephen L. Carter's criticism of such exclusion of religious in the name of democracy and Richard Rorty defense of it. It is hard to overestimate the influence of Stanley Hauerwas on American religious ethics in the era since Martin Luther King. This dissertation also shows that Hauerwas presumes that Rawls is right, that democracy requires religious language be translated in to nonreligious language. Hauerwas is simply unwilling to sacrifice fidelity for the sake of democracy. Christians, he suggests, should opt out of civic life rather than translate their ideas. Finally, this dissertation shows that Jeffrey Stout's pragmatism as outlined in his book Democracy and Tradition is a vast improvement over Rawls, Rorty and Hauerwas. Stout engages each of those thinkers while remembering the witness of Martin Luther King Jr. Despite his significant improvement, Stout still maintains, though in a weakened form, a distinction between sacred life and secular life. King, in "Letter from Birmingham City Jail," called this "a strange distinction." This dissertation argues for further opening up democratic discourse to a wider variety of religious voices.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the design integration of an animal shelter into an existing school in an at-risk neighborhood. The connection between at-risk students and homeless animals is valuable to the design. A large central courtyard located within Martin Luther King Middle School serves as a connection between both students and animals. Because the animal shelter is located in a central location within the school, students and animals have a greater ability to form a connection necessary for the program to work. This thesis is about the interaction between both animals and students through the process of design.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores Martin Luther King, Jr.'s (1929-1968) ideas and philosophy in the context of dialogue with the moral and literary imagination. King was a leading thinker and voice for the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States.

Two fundamental philosophical ideas for King were love and empathy. This dissertation explores these ideas through discussion and dialogue. Notably, King's philosophy and claims are contrasted with the writings of John Dewey and Martha Nussbaum. The dialogue between the three scholars should afford readers the opportunity for different and perhaps meaningful questions related to the teachings and philosophy of King.

Howard Thurman (1900-1981) and Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) were both Christian pastors and social prophets who made significant contributions to the religious and social life of America and the world. Although Howard Thurman is the lesser known of the two, his life and ministry influenced many individuals (including King) who have impacted American society and the larger world community. Both thinkers were also black Americans whose earliest experiences of oppression based on the coalescence of color and race in the segregated South had a profound impact on their quests and interpretations of human community. Keatts, Quenton. "A Discourse Analysis of the Centered and Critical Scholar-Activism of Martin Luther King Jr." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35821.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the often neglected research concerning the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his scholar-activism. This project is intended to look for evidence of intellectual leadership within Kingâ s writings in an effort to classify King within the Scholar-Activist paradigm in Africana Studies. Further, the aim is to examine Martin Luther King, Jr. from the critical and centered Scholar-Activist paradigm of Africana Studies based on an analysis of his writings to determine whether his works should be included in or excluded from the canon of Africana Studies. Molefi Asante, Maulana Karenga, and Terry Kershaw, three of the most respected scholars in the field of Africana Studies, seemingly ascribe differing levels of status to Kingâ s accomplishments and value within African American history (Asante, 1990; Karenga, 2002). Such a debate grounds this project. Does King measure up to the Scholar-Activist paradigm? Whether he does or does not, should the paradigm be expanded and redefined to include King, or is it acceptable as is? Kingâ s six book length writings demonstrate a consistency of themes, which include eight major foci: (1) Economic Justice; (2) Racial Equality/Integration; (3) Existentialism; (4) Social Activism/Service; (5) Theology/Activism; (6) Revolution/Leadership; (7) Black Ideology/Liberation/Black Theology; and (8) Anti-Militarism/Anti-Poverty. This author concludes that diversity of methodological approaches within Africana Studies is normal and that Kingâ s writings should be considered for inclusion into its canons. King meets all of Terry Kershawâ s requirements for inclusion in the scholar-activist paradigm.

The seven-and-a-half-hour series of funeral rites that occurred in Atlanta on April 9, 1968 in honor of assassinated civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. were broadcast live to 120 million U.S. television viewers and reported extensively in local and national newspapers and magazines. While King's April 4 assassination triggered deadly riots in more than 100 cities, Atlanta remained peaceful before and during the funeral. In this research thesis I explore how the funeral was leveraged by three disparate stakeholder group's King's family, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Atlanta's liberal white leadership- to stage image events. I create a historiography for each group that draws on primary sources and original interviews. Using an intertextual approach I conduct qualitative content analysis of the media coverage generated by each group's actions, identifying seven major messages that emerged.

Abstract:

How a speaker can use their posture, gesture, facial expression and voice to create a strong ethos, pistis and sense of trustworthiness is, in this paper, associated with charisma (the power of leadership or authority).

Verbal and nonverbal expressions from three particular speeches by Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton have been analyzed in depth. The results show that patos as well as strong nonverbal expression are factors in inspiring devotion or creating enthusiasm. Personal magnetism and radiance is also found to develop through figures of speech and rhetorical devices, including metaphors. Results show that facial expressions, pitch and other prosodic information are not always consciously taken in. Nevertheless, it is questioned whether such information can affect the ethos and pistis developed. This kind of subconscious infliction can be made visible by modern technical equipment. By identifying relevant para- and extralinguistic signals (so called ‘charismatic behaviors’ e.g. intense eyecontact) we can more easily understand why some people affect us greatly, while others go unnoticed.

The aim of this piece of research is to analyze how Martin Luther King Jr. was portrayed in three U.S newspapers based on framing theory. Through the use of qualitative frame analysis, ten newspaper articles are studied from the period 20/04/1967-11/05/1967. The dates were selected in relation to King’s public opposition to the Vietnam war. The results show that the articles are in most cases characterized by a focus on difference of opinion, polemic responses, and appeals to MLK to stop opposing the war. When understood from the lens of framing theory, this way of writing has been termed the conflict frame. Furthermore, three classroom tasks related to the newspaper articles are suggested. These activities are based on the Swedish curriculum for teaching English as a second language, schema theory, and framing theory.

Up until the 19th century, religion was used as a way of legitimizing slavery in America. With the rise of the civil rights movement religion seems to have played a quite different role. This essay aims to explore the role of religion in the ideologies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. The speeches, writings and actions of these two men have been analysed in hope that the result will contribute to the larger study of American civil rights history.

This essay proposes that both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X infused their political message with religious ideas and that they leaned on religion for support and inspiration. By analysing the discourse headed by King and X it becomes clear that in direct contrast to how religion was used during slavery, religion was used as a way of legitimizing equality (and in some cases black superiority) between races during the civil rights movement.

This thesis examines the controversy surrounding the renaming of a street for Martin Luther King, Jr. in the city of Zephyrhills, Florida in 2003-2004. By paying close attention to the language deployed during a series of contentious city council meetings, the thesis traces how Zephyrhills' divisive history and neoliberal spatial order kept white residents from grappling with the city's legacy of racism, inequality, residential segregation, and the memory of the Civil Rights movement. Ultimately, it reveals Americans' limited capacity to recognize and discuss race in the post-Civil Rights era.

This thesis is a exercise in a design proposal on the levee of the Mississippi spanned by a 1950's steel bridge in a historic St. Louis district known as Laclede's Landing. My intentions are to introduce a connection between the river and the city that will provide access to the water's edge to create a linear park or esplanade alongside Wharf Street that parallels the river; to create a gateway at the Martin Luther King bridge into the Landing at Wharf Street to provide a strong edge of the Landing; and development of a program for a building on the water's edge. With these intentions the study for the design proposal proceeds from the analysis of the site to the development of the program. From this, a design proposal is made.

This thesis intends to investigate the possible existence of a common ethical force among religions and ancient philosophical traditions, as Weltethos (Global Ethic Project) proposes. This project was written by the ecumenical theologian Hans Küng and supported by the World Religions Parliament in 1993. According to this document, the common basis of religions lies in some important aspects. First of all, the ancestral principle of the golden rule: "Do unto others only what you would have them do unto you," complemented by the four immovable precepts: The first one is a commitment to a culture of non-violence and life protection, the second is the commitment to a culture of solidarity and a fairness in economic order, the third one is a culture of tolerance and a life of truth, and finally the commitment to a culture of equal rights and fellowship between men and women. Based on these ideas, the project supports that it is possible to address ways to meet different beliefs through a culture of respect, peace and solidarity. Taking these ideas into account and also the interpretation based on the approach proposed above, it is possible to prove the applicability of common ethical principles in the life of two historical characters from different religious traditions: Mohandas Karanchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, an important religious leader in India during the British domination and Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the civil rights movements of black people in the United States in the 1960s. Even the dissimilarities inherent in each of them so as their different religious experiences were not an obstacle in the way of sharing common ethical ideals nor for the political action of both.

Abstract:

This dissertation utilized constructivism and identity frameworks to describe educators' interpretations of their work in an urban school located on a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street (MLK Streets). MLK Streets have become more associated with the locality rather than the ideas of the late civil rights leader. Accordingly, how educators construct their knowledge of the community is as important as the development of instructional practices. The present case study analyzed data to explore the overarching research question: What are educators' interpretations of the work, the school, and community surrounding their school located on an MLK Street in the Central Valley of California? Emergent themes included urban teacher identity formation, teaching beyond academics, making connections, understanding community layers, and constructing knowledge of MLK Street localities. Findings indicated educators had an implied social justice awareness that led to significant understandings of the socio-cultural, economic, pedagogical influences, and historical understanding within the MLK Street community.

The speech “I Have a Dream”, delivered by Martin Luther King, has echoed throughout the world over the years for political, social and religious reasons. Despite being a deeply studied text, this dissertation aims to approach it within the scope of a hermeneutical analysis of the discourse, seeking to better understand its pertinence and adequacy, both at the time of its pronouncement and in the present day. In its original context, Luther King's speech points to the struggle against racial segregation and the exclusion of civil rights of black Americans. The manner in which the speech and the objectives of the March for Rights and Labor were presented took over the US capital city with people aggrieved for suffering segregation and sensitive to this intolerant attitude. For this, this dissertation, as it aims a Hermeneutic Analysis of the Discourse, recovers historical, social, political and religious contexts. The present study also makes intertextual connections to other Luther King’s conferences, as well as with several moments in which the presence of the text of the Sacred Scriptures can be recognized. Finally, under a contemporary view, this research verifies the current relevance of the theme of "I Have a Dream", a discourse that is constantly re-contextualized and whose theme is always urgent.

Abstract:
Before the reformation and the schism of the Catholic Church, it had always been the duty of the Church and not of the state, to undertake the seven corporal works of mercy; feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick, visit the prisoner, and bury the dead.¹ By dissolving these institutions, Henry had unwittingly created what would become a social disaster of biblical proportions. In essence, this act was rendering thousands of the poor and elderly without a home or shelter, it denied the country of much of the medical aid that has been offered by the church, it denied future generations of thousands of volumes of books and scriptures from the monastic libraries, as well as denied many an education who would have otherwise never received one without the help of the Church. The ultimate goal of my thesis is to prove my hypothesis that the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII was not merely a contributory factor in the need for the creation of poor laws, but the deciding factor (in a myriad of societal issues) for their creation. Abstract:
This thesis explores the changing reputation and legacy of John Powell (1882-1963). Powell was a Virginian-born pianist, composer, and ardent Anglo-Saxon supremacist who created musical propaganda to support racial purity and to define the United States as an exclusively Anglo-Saxon nation. Although he once enjoyed international fame, he has largely disappeared from the public consciousness today. In contrast, the legacies of many of Powell’s musical contemporaries, such as Charles Ives and George Gershwin, have remained vigorous. By examining the ways in which the public has perceived and portrayed Powell both during and after his lifetime, this thesis links Powell’s obscurity to a deliberate, public rejection of his Anglo-Saxon supremacist definition of the United States.
