Abstract:
This article developed from the therapeutic case study that I wrote for NZAP membership in 2006. It follows my work with Martha, an adult woman, over the course of four years of individual therapy. Issues of loss and bereavement permeated the therapy, most obviously for the client but also for me. I struggled with times when the client's life experience, as spoken in session, was very close to my own; so close that I felt my ability to remain separate and able to think was in danger of being compromised. It seems to me these are issues that all of us must struggle with at times, and merit further discussion.

Chmielewska, Katarzyna. "In Martha We Trust? The Cultural Significance of the Martha Stewart Phenomenon." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4267/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the relationship between Martha Stewart's rendition of domesticity and a broader cultural trend of the late 1990s U.S. domestic retreatism. It argues that the mode of construction and representation of the "domestic dream" in Stewart's programs cannot be examined outside of such concepts as class and ethnicity, whose understanding depends on the cultural, social, and political context of a given era, a context, in which they become transparent as aspects of the Western (white, patriarchal) status quo. Performing a deconstructive reading of these categories as employed by Stewart in the process of creation of her media persona, the thesis examines what the negative as well as positive reactions to "Martha Stewart" convey about the condition of American society of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Abstract:
The protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing’s Martha Quest is born to white British settler parents and grows up in a British colony in southern Africa in the 1930s. Although officially the coloniser rather than the colonised, Martha tries to reject this role mentally, verbally, and physically. This essay aims to show that a postcolonial reading of Martha in relation to the colonial context helps in understanding her double consciousness and, more specifically, her inability to find a real or lasting sense of home. Using Homi Bhabha’s concept of unhomeliness, the essay argues that Martha does not truly feel at home anywhere, because the “unhomely” always disturbs the “homely.” Through close reading of the text, it shows how Martha tries to find a sense of home in four areas of her life: her physical home, nature, her body, and her mind. This essay finds that despite Martha’s efforts in moving from her family home to rented accommodation, from the bush to the city, from girlhood to womanhood, and from her individual thoughts to the solidarity of others, she still does not feel at home anywhere. Whenever she starts to feel comfortable in a place or situation, unhomely moments, such as reminders of her nationality, race, or class, always disturb the homely feelings of belonging. Ultimately, Martha cannot escape her unhomeliness.

Abstract:

The thesis „Martha Nussbaum’s philosophy with regard to its feministic orientation” represents Martha Nussbaum’s theory of the good life, demonstrates it as a feminist philosophy and locates it in the context of feminist theory. It is shown that Martha Nussbaum’s capability approach in connection with her reflections about the political liberalism and communitarianism is an important contribution for a feministic ethic of equality. Martha Nussbaum combines questions of justice with a theory of the good life. In her demand for the ethicing of the political, lies the relevance of her philosophy for feminism.

This dissertation seeks to understand how Martha Medeiros' chronicles represent the common subject. To do so, it is given an overview of the construction of the subject’s concept throughout history, as well as the role of the chronicle in Brazil and Latin America. Thus, the scenario is described to situate the analysis. The study uses as corpus the production of Martha Medeiros, published in the Donna's pages in the Zero Hora newspaper from September 2011 to February 2012. The methodology used is the content analysis, guided by a path made by Nísia Martins do Rosário (2006) consisted of four steps: Which chronicle languages are used in the analyzed texts? How these elements are being used? Which senses are being produced in the selected texts? and How the signification process is presented?. Generally, the research concludes that the chronicles of Martha Medeiros represent the common subject by addressing issues and using a language capable of producing meanings relevant to readers. It is possible to notice that the sense given by the texts refers to something that happens to most of the people, or to the common subject. This can explain why Martha Medeiros’ chronicles have reached this level.

Salmon, H. L. "Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway: A Literary Relationship." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4183/.

Abstract:
Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway met in Key West in 1937, married in 1941, and divorced in 1945. Gellhorn's work exhibits a strong influence from Hemingway's work, including collaboration on her work during their marriage. I will discuss three of her six novels: WMP (1934), Liana (1944), and Point of No Return (1948). The areas of influence that I will rely on in many ways follow the stages Harold Bloom outlines in Anxiety of Influence. Gellhorn's work exposes a stage of influence that Bloom does not describe-which I term collaborative. By looking at Hemingway's influence in Gellhorn's writing the difference between traditional literary influence and collaborative influence can be compared and analyzed, revealing the footprints left in a work by a collaborating author as opposed to simply an influential one.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As countries across the globe pursue economic development, the improvement of individual and societal well-being has increasingly become an overarching goal. In the global South, in particular, high levels of poverty, inequality and deteriorating social fabrics remain significant challenges. Programmes and projects for addressing these challenges have had some, but limited, impact. This occasional paper analyses well-being in Gauteng province from a capability perspective, using a standard ‘capability approach’ consistent with Amartya Sen’s first conceptualisation, which was then operationalised by Martha Nussbaum. Earlier research on poverty and inequality in the Gauteng City-Region was mainly based on objective characteristics of well-being such as income, employment, housing and schooling. Using data from the Gauteng City-Region Observatory’s Quality of Life Survey IV for 2015/16, our capability approach provides a more holistic view of well-being by focusing on both objective and subjective aspects simultaneously. The results confirm the well-known heterogeneity in human conditions among South African demographic groups, namely that capability achievements vary across race, age, gender, income level and location. However, we observe broader (in both subjective and objective dimensions) levels of deprivation that are otherwise masked in the earlier studies. In light of these findings, the paper recommends that policies are directly targeted towards improving those capability indicators where historically disadvantaged and vulnerable groups show marked deprivation. In addition, given the spatial heterogeneities in capability achievements, we recommend localised interventions in capabilities that are lagging in certain areas of the province.

Abstract:
This report summarizes the Basin Sediment Management for Unique Island Topography Workshop hosted in-person and virtually at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (UPRM) Department of Civil Engineering and Surveying, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico on 11 March 2022. The workshop was attended by approximately 80 federal, state, local, and academic organizations participants. It focused on Engineering With Nature® (EWN®), green infrastructure (GI) and low impact development (LID) opportunities for unique tropical island topography and included seven presentations from subject matter experts, a discussion on limitations and problems with prior projects, and two concurrent breakout sessions. Preworkshop activities included a field trip to multiple sites in the Añasco watershed conducted 09 March 2022, which served as a base case for the workshop. The field trip provided participants a unique perspective of the island’s topography and post 2017 Hurricane María issues and impacts. During the breakout sessions, participants identified new project opportunities for EWN®-GI and LID at two selected sites from the field trip. Each group developed alternatives for their chosen site and identified concepts that could turn into great opportunities for the surrounding communities and significantly benefit the state of practice in Puerto Rico’s unique tropical island topography.

Abstract:
This report is adapted from the forthcoming Climate Instruments for the Transport Sector (CITS) report written by Cornie Huizenga, convener of the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), and Stefan Bakker, from the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs. The authors received valuable input from: Dario Hidalgo, from EMBARQ/World Resources Institute, for the Belo Horizonte case study; Frederic Rudolph, Urda Eichhorst and Wolfgang Sterk, from Wuppertal Institute, for the Hefei case study; Holger Dalkmann and Ko Sakamoto, from Transport Research Laboratory, for the Jakarta case study; and Martina Jung and Christian Ellermann, from ECOFYS, for the Mexico case study. This report was edited by Peter Shifter. The CITS project was guided by Rafael Acevedo-Daunas, Maria Cordeiro, Vera Lucia Vicentini, Maria Netto and Francisco Arango at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and by Jamie Leather and Sharad Saxena at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The two case studies in Asian cities were financed by the ADB, and the two Latin American studies by the IDB. The combined report was financed by the ADB and the publication financed by the IDB as part of a combined effort within an MOU signed by both institutions and their participation in the SLoCaT partnership.
