Godano, F. "Ippolito Marsili.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis focuses on the Italian iuris doctor Ippolito Marsili (Bologna 1450 - Bologna 1530). One of the founders of criminal law scholarship and teacher of the first known criminal law course, Ippolito Marsili is aknowledged as a prominent scholar of his age; nonetheless, his biographical and scientific profile still awaits an organic recontruction. The aim of the research is to examine a few aspects of the life and work of this jurist, in order to provide a starting point for a possible comprehensive study. The dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part is centered on Marsili's biography. In chapter 1 a short account of the Marsili family is presented; in particular, I highlighted the links of the family with the powerful Milanese Signoria of the Sforza. Chapter 2 is focused on the main stages of the jurist's life. After discussing a few problems concerning his doctoral degree (his alleged canon law degree is missing), I analyzed his professional career as a teacher - in Bologna - and as a judge - mainly in the Sforza dominion. The research shows a very strong, almost frantic connection between these two activities, which sometimes even seem to overlap; such a feature mirrors the bond between theory and practice of law that Marsili will later pour into his works. In his relationship with political power, our character reveals the struggle of the typically medieval, autonomous jurist to exercise his role in the growing, bureaucratic State entities. Finally, the research shows how - contrary to a generally accepted tradition - Marsili cannot be considered the inventor of the “sleep deprivation” torture technique, which he arguably gathered from the praxis of the Lugano (Switzerland). The biographical part is completed in chapter 3 with an account of Marsili's literary production: lecturae/commentaria and repetitiones on the Corpus iuris, a few tractatus, a collection of singularia and his consilia. The second part of the thesis examines Marsili's main work, a criminal law treatise named Practica criminalis Averolda nuncupata (approx. 1525). Chapter 4 summarizes the development of criminal law science and the literary genre of Tractatus or Practicae criminales. Marsili's work can be thought of as a transition point between the ‘medieval forerunners’ and the ‘mature’ modern Practicae: such a position awards it peculiar and noteworthy features. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the Averolda's formal properties, examined through a comparison with a few other medieval and modern works of the kind. Practicae criminales have a main practical nature: they rationalize the criminal law emerging from medieval courts and statutes outside the scope of the Corpus iuris. Compared to other works, however, Marsili's Practica has a strong theoretical and educational purpose, combined with the practical scopes. Despite being written in the first half of the sixteenth century, the sources employed in this work (as in all the medieval ones) are the roman-canon law and the opinio doctorum. The Courts' decisiones are rapidly overcoming the scholars' law, and will have a central role in the modern Practicae, giving a territorial facet to ius commune; nonetheless, the Averolda completely ignores them, standing by a universalis, scholar-led system. Marsili's use of scholastic dialectics and particularly of the quaestio - resounding medieval procedures - reveals the purpose of extracting general rules and principles from case law, rather than giving precise solutions to each issue; the author intends to guide the reader through the reasoning behind the ermeneutic process. On the contrary, the main modern Practicae tend to reduce the role of the opiniones doctorum - often generically summarized as communis opinio - and to provide definite, clear solutions to practical issues, following the Courts' stylus. Finally, the Practicae criminales are generally deemed to lack a significant contribution to the building of a dogmatic/systematic order specific to penal law. However, the research shows how both the medieval, dialectic patterns and the modern, rationalistic structures of these works do present a ‘dogmatic development’: through a diachronic analysis of the defensive activity in courtrooms, I highlighted how Marsili and his colleagues, with different methods, shape a set of rules and principles that gradually separate from the system of the Corpus iuris to form a new, modern system of criminal law. In chapter 6 I turned to the contents of the Averolda, examining the first stages of the per inquisitionem procedure. Specific attention is paid to the rules of imprisonment (carceratio), which show a variety of precautionary measures worthy of further, detailed analysis. Overall, the features of Marsili's Averolda mirror the professional outline of the author: both sides of the research clearly reveal a medieval scholar who faces the challenges of the incipient modern world with his own scientific and professional tools: destined to be progressively discarded, yet such tools prove to have been fruitful for the new age, and to provide us with a better understanding of legal history.

In this thesis Marsili back-arc basin and Palinuro Volcanic Complex (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) have been investigated by using magnetic, bathymetric and gravimetric data. A new velocity model of opening of the Marsili basin has been proposed, highlighting the transition from the horizontal spreading of the back-arc to the vertical accretion of the Marsili seamount. Introducing gravity data, Marsili's internal structure has been modeled and a huge portion of the volcano with low density and vanishing magnetization has been detected. Forward modeling of Palinuro Volcanic Complex showed as Palinuro represents the shallowest evidence of a deep tectonic discontinuity and the possible transition domain between the oceanic crust of Marsili Basin and the continental crust related to the Appenninic chain.

Abstract:
The research aims to investigate the epistolary network of Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (1658-1730), soldier, scientist and founder of the Institute of Sciences in Bologna. Marsili has been studied mainly in relation to his military and diplomatic activity and to his contribution to natural science. Nevertheless his role as an active member of the Republic of Letters between Seventeenth and Eighteenth century has been neglected by historiography. My research aims to fill this gap and to demonstrate the integration of Marsili in the european scientific community through the analysis of his epistolary connections with a large number of scientists and hommes de lettres. The consultation of the private archive of Marquis Bevilacqua Ariosti in Bologna, which conserves more than 6000 (almost forgotten) letters received by Marsili, was essential to achieve a deeper knowledge of these connections and to integrate the existing information, acquired through the materials held by the University Library of Bologna. In particular the letters exchanged with the editors of his scientific works represent an important starting point in order to understand Marsili’s position in the international book market in the early modern period. The epistolary documents allow, in conclusion, to design a quite new portrait of his activity as author and patron.

Abstract:
In this study, we present a new 2D numerical model (UBO-Inter) capable to simulate the motion of a landslide down generic surfaces. The body is represented by N point masses that can be seen as the projection on the sliding surface of the center of mass of the elements the system is discretized into. The masses are strictly adherent to the surface and interact with each other by means of inner forces that involve pairs of point masses. The inner force pattern can be schematized by a mass grid where the grid nodes are the point masses and the pairs of interacting masses are connected through edges. The external forces acting on the point masses are: gravity, which is the driving force, the reaction force of the surface, basal friction and drag exerted by the environmental fluid. We test the UBO-Inter model on the 1783 Scilla tsunamigenic landslide, a historical case that serves as a benchmark due to the abundance of coeval data and recent observations on the onshore detachment niche, run-out distance and offshore deposits. Eventually, we investigate three scenarios of mass movements down the eastern flanks of the Marsili submarine volcano (located in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea). They are relevant because cover a broad range of slide volume, from small to huge, and different types of movements. We outline that this is the first time that slope instabilities of Marsili are given specific attention. Though in this thesis we do not address the tsunami generation and propagation problem, Marsili mass failures have the potential to be tsunamigenic and hence our study may be also seen as a significant contribution to tsunami hazard assessment in a broad area of the Tyrrhenian region.

Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EPHE5023.

Abstract:
The publication in 1492 of the first Latin translation by Ficino of the Enneads and his monumental accompanying commentary marks the return of Plotinus in the West. Ficino's working manuscript, Par. gr. 1816 of the French Bibliothèque Nationale, offers us exceptional evidence concerning the major philosophical and historical milestones in the elaboration of the Plotinus latinus. The nearly 2,500 annotations written by Ficino in the margins of this manuscript, put at his disposition by Cosimo de' Medici, are here edited, translated and commented upon. This important, previously unpublished exegetical instrument illustrates the various facets of Ficino's work over several decades on Plotinus's very difficult text: through his corrections of the transmitted text – some of these interventions have found their way into contemporary editions though their origin has not always been recognised – in doctrinal confrontation with the profoundly original Platonism of Plotinus, the manuscript reveals a Ficino anxious to integrate the Enneads in his own vision – at once Christian and Platonic – of the concordia philosophorum, whilst at the same time conscious of the sneering and audacity hardly worth saving of the Plotinian text. This Ficinian reading of the Enneads found diverse echoes in Ficino's own work and thus contributed to philosophical debate in the Renaissance and beyond

Abstract:
The thesis studies and highlights the central theme of temporality in Marsilio Ficino’s philosophy which is a thought crossed by the figures of time that are tradition, revelation and hope. The philosophy of Ficino, which is both a coherent and united thought, is not a system but it is rather the expression of a dynamic, specific to the Renaissance thought. In this study, the forms of the temporality and the unicity of the world are examined through the critical analysis of Marsilio Ficino's Commentary on the Republic of Plato which, unlike the political and ethical themes specific to the platonic dialogue, is expressly metaphysical and theological because the figures of temporality are conceived as so many metaphysical points of view from which are contemplated the world and the beings composing it. As this text did not benefit from a modern French translation, the thesis fills a gap in ficinian studies by proposing for the first time a French translation of the Argumenta in Rempublicam Platonis is proposed for the first time and, this French version, which is based on the critical establishment of the text, includes a notice, additional notes and the possibility of referring to the various sources on which this work is based. Finally, the thesis exposes a strictly ficinian definition of temporality as a spiritual and human reality by dealing with the question of the genesis and genealogy of temporal concepts and showing its cosmological implication

Bertolini, Manuel. Thesis, Clermont-Ferrand 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013CLF20004.

Full text
Abstract:
Is it possible to censure music? This question may sound rather extravagant, and this is perhaps why music is often overlooked in studies on ecclesiastical censorship in the early modern period, for it would seem that its very essence is incompatible with any form of control. In fact, the huge transformation the Catholic Church had to face, between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, had a big impact on the music scene. Unavoidably, music was involved in the disputes between Catholics and Protestants as essential liturgical element. The musicologists have mainly studied the Council of Trent action, which seemed to be animated by the desire to remove the secular textual and melodic components from the church repertory. Therefore, Rome became the main center of production for sacred and spiritual music used in celebrations, devotional practices and also in teaching catechism. The case of the Society of Jesus is exemplar: music represent a powerful means of education in college programs, and a strategic tool in the catechesis work. To the enhancement of spiritual genres corresponds as well the will of ‘suppress’ the profane repertories. This is well documented during the age of Counter Reformation, by the variety of cases of ‘‘travestimento’’ which invest canzonette and madrigals. This attitude was also proved by some of the measures the ecclesiastical censure adopted against the vocal production since the seventies of the sixteenth century. In ancient Greek musical theory, harmony was seen as being endowed with a natural virtue capable of altering the rational faculties of the listener’s soul, to the extent of depriving that person of his freedom. The many ethical implications of this classical axiom featured in early modern theological debates. My thesis tries to provide a first answer to these questions by studying the conciliar decrees, the documents of the Index Congregation, the treatises on music and the manuals on demonology. These sources reveal musical censorship did not only involve zealous inquisitors battling with some licentious musician, but also the language of worship and the circulation of prohibited knowledge, which included dangers in the form of sounds that went beyond erotic seduction

Dio, Rocco di. "Marsilio Ficino's notebooks : a case of Renaissance reading practices." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/77723/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focusses on three compilations, extant in three manuscripts ―Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana, MS 92; Milan, Venerabile Biblioteca Ambrosiana, MS F 19 sup.; Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS Borgianus graecus 22― These three manuscripts were produced by one of the most important representatives of the Italian Renaissance: Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499). The Florentine scholar was largely responsible for the revival of Platonism in Western Europe during the Renaissance and beyond. MS Ricc. 92 contains an anthology of Greek and Latin texts on the theme of love, which Ficino presumably compiled with a view to writing his commentary on Plato’s Symposium. MS Ambr. F 19 sup. is a collection of excerpts from Plato, Plotinus and Proclus on the theme of the soul, which Ficino produced before starting writing his major philosophical work: the Platonic Theology. Finally, MS Borg. Gr. 22 was likely used by Ficino as a textual basis for his translation of Dionysius the Areopagite’s De divinis nominibus. These three notebooks have been hitherto largely ignored or only partially studied by modern scholars. Through a contextualized analysis of these manuscripts, this work aims to give insight into Ficino’s reading practices and methodology, and show that they are crucial to reconstruct his scholarly activity. By using an interdisciplinary approach, it will provide a more nuanced view and more exhaustive reconstruction of the ways in which Ficino actually read, selected and used ancient and medieval authors and also of the ways in which he quoted, codified their doctrines and appropriated them in his own work. More broadly, it will offer insight into Renaissance reading practices and some important aspects of Early Modern culture.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is focused on astrology as a discipline during the Italian Renaissance and studies the case of the astrologer, philosopher, theologian and physician Marsilio Ficino (1422-1499). Through the example of Ficino, we study the survival of the ancient astrology derived from Greek and Roman practices. This dissertation proposes a genealogy of astrological humanism and studies the relationships amongst the political theology and the economic theology supported by Ficino. An archaeology of Renaissance humanism is followed by a study of the survival of the ancient model of make sexuality in the Medici culture and we propose a research about the sources of Ficino's astral magic and in order to nuance Frances A. Yates's hypotheses which defend the importance of the Corpus Hermeticum in Ficino's magic

Abstract:
The quarell between the pope and the emperor during the XIII and XIV centuries has given rise to numerous theories about the power in defense of one or another institution. Marsilius of Padua (1280 1343) was one of the most important thinkers to present arguments for these discussions in the XIV century. Informing against the excesses of the pope and his Cardinal´s College, he was forced to take refuge at the court of emperor Ludwig IV. The main paduans work was the Defensor Pacis (1324) in which he exposed fundamental elements to the debate in question. This thesis aimed to discuss the political doctrine developed by Marsilius of Padua from his own context. For this, it was necessary understand their conflicts and influences in order to analyze the political concepts presented in his major work. Supported by Aristotle, he wrote a practical plan for policy intervention of the emperor at Regnum Italicum. Marsilius got fundamental importance by his formulation of the notion of power restricted to the temporal sphere, outlining a first idea of autonomy of civil power, endowed with independent and specific assignments of the ecclesiastical sphere.

Abstract:
2014 - 2015
The thesis arises from the critical proposal to consider Marsilio Ficino’s Epistolae as the philosopher’s favourite place for the discussion of the main themes of his speculation. Ficino’s preference for the short-treatise form makes this work a huge resource for the scholars; however, what is proposed here is a hermeneutical hypothesis based on the theory of knowledge emerging from his Letters. Knowledge has a decisive role in Ficino’s epistolary project of the diffusion of a renewed Platonism: it is, on one hand, the most suitable instrument for the analysis of human condition and, on the other, the only medium for the elevation of man to the divine. The thesis consists of three chapters: the first, which serves as an introduction, deals with some philological problems about the complex nature of the Epistolarium, mostly with the genre of letter-treatise that, although it is present in all the twelve books, it is exclusive of the second. Therefore, the main thematic nuclei of the so-called Opuscula theologica are examined, which are useful hermeneutical tools for the continuation of the work. Finally, I have proposed an interpretation founded on the peculiar relationship between contemplative and active life in order to better understand the arguments of the next chapters. The second chapter discusses two core themes of Ficino’s theory of knowledge: anthropology and psychology. About the former, I present the letters that the philosopher addresses «to Mankind»: from these, what arises is a picture of man who is always suspended between the misery of his temporal condition and the deification as his highest aspiration, after the discovery and knowledge of the self. Ficino, ideally addressing the human race, succeeds to express the exhortation to the highest virtue of humanity, at the same time the means and ends of the highest achievement of man. The latter, however, becomes possible only by the special nature of the human soul which is the subject of analysis of the next section: the epistles on the soul are studied by comparing with the Platonic Theology on the Immortality of Souls, showing similarities and 2 differences. The question of the relation between the multiplicity of the powers of the soul and its unity is followed by that about the intellect and the will in the fruition of the highest Good. This is a recurrent and apparently contradictory theme in the Epistolarium, which I discuss on the base of recent studies. The third chapter concerns the faculties of knowledge involved in the cognitive path offered in the letters. The first section talks about the ambiguous function of the two powers of phantasy and imagination, about which I explain not only the terminological difference, but also the different nature: the deceptive imagination, that is responsible for the illusory manifestation of reality, opposing the phantasy, that “translates” intellectual contents in order to make them comprehensible by the reason. The second section deals with the question of the production of true knowledge and the role of the reason and the intellect. From the problematic nature of human intellectus and the results of the second chapter, through an analysis of Platonic sources, I propose a form of human knowledge based both on dianoetic rational process and on intuition of the highest part of mens. In this way, one is able to give meaning to all the highest forms of knowledge throughout the work: divine frenzy, vacatio animae and prophecy. Although these seem “altered” states of consciousness related to each other, they reflect the evolution of Ficino’s philosophy. Following the progress of the first theme from the De divino furore to the last letters and the Commentaries on Plato’s dialogues (Symposium, Phaedrus and Ion), it is possible to get both the philosopher’s attempt to be close to the source and the problematic assimilation to the Pauline raptus that he proposes. The argument on the septem vacationis genera in the thirteenth book of Platonic Theology becomes the looking-glass through which one can interpret dreams, previsions, miracles found in the Letters. In the end, through the study of the Neoplatonic sources and the Savonarolan thinking, I discuss the theme of prophetic knowledge that is on the boundaries between a divine gift and a natural power of the soul. From Ficino’s Epistolae, what results is a very complex picture of man, an actual doublefaced Janus, who is always turned to the knowledge of God but is often hindered by the anxiety and restlessness of this life. Furthermore, the reading of the letters in relation to philosopher’s other works, is a valid instrument for the reconstruction of his thinking. The thesis presents an Appendix with the text and the Italian translation of the most important letters in order to better comprehend the hermeneutical proposal of this work. In conclusion, there is a wide bibliography of the sources and the examined critical studies. [edited by Author]

With the key point the study and interpretation of the engraving "Melencolia I", by Albrecht Dürer, this work focus not only the formal characteristics of this work, but the various possibilities and connections that it has the time and place where it was produced, mainly Neo-Platonist the philosophy of Marsilio Ficin. Traveling beyond the narrow confines of a purely formalist reading, the study considers the work of art as an active and complex relationship to the events surrounding the story, thinking about his iconographic analysis as a tool for reconstruction of the individual, the environment, the general history.

Abstract:

With a sample of 36 individuals of both sexes and ages ranging from 12 to 17, focus groups were assembled for data collection and analysis in order to provide a wide discussion about vulnerability in the context of their lives, having as referential basis the assumptions of sociologist Robert Castel who understands it as being central in the process of social mobility, from inception to disaffiliation, and whose axis are poor interpersonal dealings and precarious work/productivity relations. The results unveil the presence of certain factors responsible for vulnerable situations in both axis, generated mainly by the lack of access to social areas and professional formation or actual job opportunities, which are worsened by previous episodes of discrimination. As a secondary goal, supported by Moscovici, the intention was to identify possible social representations of this vulnerability on the speech of the participants, in an attempt to understand in what specific way these youngsters would translate their experiences and perceptions of this context of deficiency. Besides trying to deepen the theoretical perception of a social phenomenon (vulnerability) or category (youth), the goal was to shed light on aspects of a population of the city that is both little accessed and little known

Within the limits of the urban territory, more specifically at the south end of the city of São Paulo, you arrive to a Engenheiro Marsilac, a neighborhood located within a protected area where lifestyles mixed elements of a traditional past with modernity from the circularity people, communication and goods. Moreover, it adds up to, the direct contact with natural areas where the preservation goes beyond speech, being incorporated into the set of daily practices. In this context, the objective of this research was to understand these social relations and spatial joints present on the day of that neighborhood. Abstract:
In this paper i propose to treat a classic question of political thought, the relationship-conflict between phjisis and nomos (nature and law), through a historical study that, ranging from the origins (from the pre-Socratic philosophy) to the Middle Ages, emphasizes the drift, in theological and metaphysical terms, of the issue of good governance. This respect to the first and the second part. The third part, the most important, is devoted entirely to Marsilio of Padua and his main work: the Defensor Pacis. Through a thorough study, i will show how, in particular, the concept of pars valencior, own of the Paduan genius, retrieve, in my opinion, the Socratic idea of politics: as the place where the comparison between the proposals ( those that arise from the phronesis and not from the sophia) is the only one that can ensure the improvement of the state.

Abstract:
The study of the Marsilio Ficino's correspondence, whose first book is being comprehensively translated, reveals an aspect of his philosophy which is usually ignored. Inspired by Stoicism, the moral thought of the master of Platonician Academy in Florence finds in the letter its most appropriate way of expression. Indeed because epistolary literature daily examines the actions of the correspondents, it may be seen as an opportunity to reflect on virtues as well as the philosophical style most likely to encourage people to live a good life. This practical philosophy ensures the progress of the soul, after looking into itself, toward virtue, and as a consequence catches sight of its unity as well as its divinity. Practical philosophy is a stage to speculative one, introducing to make acts agree with thoughts, ant thoughts with words

Abstract:
After the first evidence of subglacial liquid water in the subsurface near the Martian South Pole the search for further evidence of liquid water in that area has become a driver in the analysis of the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) data. If this discovery is not an isolated case it could be possible to find a liquid water system in the subsurface. In this work data of Martian South Pole collected by MARSIS are analysed. These echoes are used to map the characteristics of Mars ground and underground topography because their power values change with the composition of the soil. The power values of the echoes depend on the altitude of the spacecraft and on distortion due to ionosphere. Ionospheric distortions can’t be completely eliminated, then a precise data calibration is not possible. These problems are addressed with an empirical calibration of surface and subsurface reflected data based on the assumption that different orbits passing above the same point have to collect the same value of surface echo power. After these operations the calibrated maps of the Southern Residual Ice Cap (SRIC) and of the South Polar Layered Deposits (SPLD) show that their surface reflectivity are significantly different, while their subsurface characteristics seem to be similar. The comparison of these two areas confirms the previous studies about the surface composition of the Polar Cap covered by few meters thick layer of CO2 ice responsible for weak reflections. The analysis of the SPLD highlights the presence of bright reflectors near the subglacial lake, already found by recent studies and additional zones with high basal echoes undetected before. These could be the target for future investigation since they are likely to host small liquid water bodies in subsurface.

Abstract:
Lucus Planum, extending for a radius of approximately 500km around 181 degrees E, 5 degrees S, is part of the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF), a set of several discontinuous deposits of fine-grained, friable material straddling across the Martian highland-lowland boundary. The MFF has been variously hypothesized to consist of pyroclastic flows, pyroclastic airfall, paleopolar deposits, or atmospherically deposited icy dust driven by climate cycles. Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS), a low-frequency subsurface-sounding radar carried by European Space Agency's Mars Express, acquired 238 radar swaths across Lucus Planum, providing sufficient coverage for the study of its internal structure and dielectric properties. Subsurface reflections were found only in three areas, marked by a distinctive surface morphology, while the central part of Lucus Planum appears to be made of radar-attenuating material preventing the detection of basal echoes. The bulk dielectric properties of these areas were estimated and compared with those of volcanic rocks and ice-dust mixtures. Previous interpretations that east Lucus Planum and the deposits on the northwestern flanks of Apollinaris Patera consist of high-porosity pyroclastic material are strongly supported by the new results. The northwestern part of Lucus Planum is likely to be much less porous, although interpretations about the nature of the subsurface materials are not conclusive. The exact origin of the deposits cannot be constrained by radar data alone, but our results for east Lucus Planum are consistent with an overall pyroclastic origin, likely linked to Tharsis Hesperian and Amazonian activity. Plain Language Summary Lobe-shaped thick deposits, collectively known as the Medusae Fossae Formation, are found west of the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars. Visual observations of these smooth and relatively unremarkably looking materials have not definitively determined how they formed with hypotheses ranging from volcanic ash to remnants of a materials deposited at a previous location of the north pole, to accumulation of atmospheric dust. In this study we used the ground penetrating radar on board Mars Express to see through these deposits to derive information about Lucus Planum, the central lobe of the Medusae Fossae Formation. Through our analysis of the way the radar waves were reflected by subsurface layering, we concluded that the materials forming Lucus Planum are spatially variable: the east and west portions of the deposits are highly porous and probably composed of ashes and rocks from nearby volcanoes. In the north-west the deposits are much denser, but we could not unequivocally define their nature. Finally, our instrument could not detect signals from the central part of Lucus Planum, which suggests yet a different component in the deposits. This diversity points to a dynamic geological history in this unique region of Mars.

The aim of the present dissertation constitutes to analyse the way in how light assumes the meaning of universal bond in the cosmovision of Marsilio Ficino, especially from his works Quid sit lumen, De Sole, De Amore and De Vita. The influence of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) in the history of occidental thought is impressive. Besides having translated to Latin the important texts of the neoplatonic tradition, Ficino presided over the Academy of Careggi, congregating important humanists in the top of the Renaissance. His treatises on love, beauty, light, magic and immortality of the soul have influenced strongly the production of other thinkers. The subject of light is of fundamental importance among his works since it is deeply related with all the other aspects of his philosophy. For him, light is spiritual emanation that perpasses everything without staining itself. Originated how the divine goodness, the light blows up in beauty in multiplicity, setting fire on the soul that truily contemplates it and that identifies whith it. The starting point of this loving relation between man and deity is, therefore, the physical world, that occults in itself the metaphysical light.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Defensor pacis ("Defender of peace") is the work of Marsilius of Padua, an Italian philosopher from the fourteeth century. Marsilius' purpose, in this book, is to defend the emperor against the partisans of the pontifical theocracy. To do that, he opposes to the divine legitimacy of the pope the elective legitimacy of the emperor. In nis thesis, Gilles Lebreton shows that Marsilius is a veritable defendor of the popular sovereignty, even if some aspects of his "democraty" stay archaic. He explains why Marsilius must be considered like the precursor of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and like the father of the French Revolution. His conclusion is that Marsilius is the biggest politic thinker in the middle age
