The present study seeks to evaluate the relationship between psychology and neuroscience. Therefore, taking the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Bruno Latour s work, specifically, it can be noticed the socio-technical networks that trace the field of neuroscience. Armed with some basic concepts such as factishes, black box and sociotechnical network, pointing up the assemblages made from the network formed, and scientific work on the brain as the entry point. It has assigned a specific value to the brain that produces an assemblage of a series of actants. This network of actants constitute the field of neuroscience, in which psychology articulates in a certain way. When psychology articulates with neurosciences, there are some interests to certain psi practices, disposed with a naturalization of thought. At the same time, we observe that, since its elaborations, such practices have a scientific claim, which is great harmony in the work neuroscience.

Suplizio, Jean. "Evolutionary Psychology: The Academic Debate." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28478.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the academic debate that surrounds the new field called "Evolutionary Psychology." Evolutionary psychology has emerged as the most popular successor theory to human sociobiology. Its proponents search for evolved psychological mechanisms and emphasize universal features of the human mind. My thesis is that in order to flourish evolutionary psychologists must engage other researchers on equal terms -- something they have not been doing. To show this, I examine the stances of practitioners from three other social science fields whose claims have been shortchanged by evolutionary psychology: Barbara King in biological anthropology, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in empirical linguistics and Annette Karmiloff-Smith in developmental psychology. These researchers are also involved in cognitive science investigations that bear on evolutionary psychology's key claims about the mind and how it works. Evolutionary psychologists make three key claims about the mind. The first (1) is that the mind is massively modular; the second (2) is that this massively modular mind has been shaped by the processes of natural selection over evolutionary time; and the third (3) is that it is adapted to the Pleistocene conditions of our past. Evolutionary psychologists seek to elevate these three claims to the status of meta-theoretical assumptions making them the starting place from which our deliberations about human cognition ought proceed. These claims would constitute the framework for a new paradigm in the ultimate sense. I argue that elevating these claims to such a status is not only premature, but also unwarranted on the available evidence. This result is justified by evidence produced outside evolutionary psychology by those disciplines from which evolutionary psychologists explicitly seek to distance themselves.

Abstract:
Cognitive representations of the world have been typically studied by means of either qualitative approaches or bivariate association. The sketch map technique and other strategies of data collection have been used in the past, in many instances applied to reduced sets of world nations. In the present study sketch maps of the world drawn by Brazilian university students were examined in terms of frequency of inclusion of nations to verify the combined influence of potential determinants of that inclusion. A graphical procedure was devised to differentiate shared and parochial views of the world and to simultaneously indicate possible predictive variables. The quantitative analysis of the effects of world countries' characteristics upon the inclusion of nations on the sketch maps was proposed as an additional step for a better understanding of the complex process of formation of cognitive representations of the world. Map features and other characteristics of world countries were analyzed and selected by correlational techniques, including exploratory factor analysis, to be part of multiple regression models used to account for the inclusions of nations. The exploratory regression analyses were performed on a random half of the Brazilian sample of students, according to a combined use of hierarchical analysis, based on classes of causal precedence of the independent variables, and stepwise selection within those classes. The final multiple regression equations accounted for approximately 75 percent of the variance of the dependent variable. A cross-validation procedure was then accomplished, which confirmed the results of the exploratory phase. The main influences upon the inclusion of nations by the Brazilian students were exerted by world indicators of geopolitical, military and economic power, as represented by the strategy board game "WARII" and citations of nations on a Brazilian newspaper. The second group in importance was formed by structural characteristics of the countries, such as their size and map positioning. Cultural aspects of world countries, including the involvement of the country in soccer, presented the smallest effect.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 1995.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary objectives of the present research were to predict the quality of relationships of gay male couples, as well as those of the members of the couples, on the basis of chosen variables. These chosen variables were taken along an ecological framework, which took into account variables from a personal, psychological, interpersonal and social context. Five variables received wide coverage in the present research: The sexual behavioural status of the relationship, sex role self-concept, sex role behaviour, perceived social support from family and friends, and passing. Partner-homogamy was also an important variable in the present research. This resulted in differences in the chosen variables within couples being used to predict the quality of the relationships of gay male couples. A sample of 30 couples was obtained through advertisements in the local gay press. The sample comprised mostly middle and high-class whites who had been involved in well-functioning, long-lasting (:t 8 years) relationships and who had lived together. Each couple received by mail two identical sets of measuring instruments - one for each member of the couple - to complete independently from the other. The measuring instruments, which were all self-reporting scales, were the Biographical and Personal Questionnaire, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Bern Sex Role Inventory, the Shared Decision Making Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Being Known to Distant Others Scale, the Being Known to Significant Others Scale, and the Desire to Pass Scale. Results were obtained through statistical analysis with both the couples (N = 30) and the partners (N = 60) as the unit of analysis. When the respective results are viewed together, the most important correlates of the quality of relationships were an increase in the length of the relationship, a female self-concept among both partners, the viewing of shared decision making within the relationship, and overtly maintaining a gay lifestyle, together with partner-homogamy with regard to a female self-concept, perceived social support from friends, and the level of overtness concerning sexual preferences. Furthermore, it was important that psychological masculinity had to be vested in one member of the couple only. The most important predictors of the quality of well adjusted relationships were an increase in the length of the relationship, a female self-concept among both partners, the viewing of shared decision making in the relationship, little perceived social support from friends and family, and maintaining an overt gay lifestyle, together with the homogamy of partners towards perceived social support from friends, being known as gay to significant others, and the view of shared decision making in the relationship respectively. Furthermore, it was important that one of the members had to have previous experience of gay relationships. The greatest limitation of the present research was the small sample which resulted in low statistical power. The research has, however, made a contribution by shedding light on the functioning of gay male couples within the South African context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gogel & McNulty (1983) demonstrated that the greater the density of vertical reference or hatch marks in a display, the greater the perceived velocity of a laterally moving object. Their study corroborates the findings of other researchers that the addition of reference-marks or a reference frame lowers the motion threshold (Liebowitz, 1955; Brown, 1931a, 1931b). The current studyâs first experiment successfully replicated the results of Gogel & McNultyâs study using a flat panel LCD screen and a predicted-motion task. Subsequent experiments examined the effect of object and reference-mark characteristics on accuracy. In general, accuracy increased as the extrapolation distance (ED) and reference-mark density increased. There was a consistent interactive effect between ED and reference-mark density such that medium and long EDs coupled with high density of reference-marks produced the greatest increase in accuracy. There was an interactive sex effect with ED which was present in the results, but was not consistent. Though accuracy was not affected by object size, horizontal extent, shape, familiarity, color or offset, the effect of high reference-mark density on improving accuracy disappeared when marks were less salient. The results of these experiments have application to the design of displays used for military, air traffic control and cockpit applications, laparoscopic surgery, assembly-line manufacturing, highway-construction tasks, and on-orbit space manufacturing and construction.

Abstract:
The number of individuals who identify as a non-binary gender has almost tripled over the last 10 years. This growing population, and the legal protection against sex discrimination afforded to them under Title VII, puts a responsibility on employers to better understand their experiences in the workplace. The purpose of the current study was to examine how disclosing a non-binary gender identity when applying for jobs influenced hiring outcomes. Specifically, my study assessed (a) hiring managers' beliefs about non-binary gender identities, (b) how those beliefs impacted hiring managers' perceived ability to provide social support to prospective applicants, and (c) how those beliefs and perceptions subsequently impacted their evaluations of and hiring intentions toward applicants who did or did not disclose a non-binary gender identity. I randomly assigned participants to one of four conditions ([self-disclosure: yes vs. no] x [other disclosure: yes vs. no]) and asked them to evaluate applicants via an online experiment. Although results did not reveal a significant effect of disclosure on hiring and support outcomes or a significant indirect effect of disclosure on hiring outcomes through support, there was a conditional indirect effect for one method of disclosure. I discuss theoretical and practical implications, study limitations, and avenues for future research.

Abstract:
What happens after the skin barrier has been broken? This study explores the experience of having marks and scars on the body as a result of self-harm. It aims to investigate the meaning attributed to the marks and scars on the body and how they shape the experience of self-harm and identity of the person. Six female participants gave accounts of their experiences, participating in semi-structured interviews. The interview transcripts were then analysed, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four superordinate themes are identified: From Depth to Surface, Bargaining, Connecting the Dots and Drawing Butterflies. The superordinate themes explore the attribution of meaning to the marks and scars in regards to self, history and relationships. A transcending wish to shape and transform the narrative, visual and emotional, is highlighted. The findings of the study indicate that marks and scars carry great meaning for the participants. An unexpected finding highlights the layers of meaning attributed to the presence or absence of scars. An extensive discussion is being made regarding representations of dualism throughout the analysis as well as the differentiation and relationship of self-harm and suicide. Clinical and research implications for Counselling Psychology include: suggestions regarding the definition of selfharm; therapeutic implications of communicative and functional self-harm and the function of marks and scars as agents of embodiment and therapeutic change.

Abstract:
Our research question starts from one of Lacan's latest theoretical elaborations, the formulas of sexuation elaborated to explain the choice of enjoyment of speaking beings. We ask ourselves whether the formulas of sexuation that Lacan develops after the theory of the discourses and simultaneously to the Borromean knot topology can clarify questions concerning the identification, the choice of sex and sexual orientation. At the same time if they can help us understand the different ways of relationship between speaking beings, differents pair bonds, man-woman, mother-child, mother-daughter or group bonds. We start from the theory of drives that Lacan develops from that of Freud. The dualism of Freud's theory of drives reflects that between subject and object. Lacan has always supported the thesis that the object is not the object of knowledge which implies the ego, because the subject of the unconscious since Freud is not the Aristotelian subject, that’s why the world is not complaisant to thought. Between S1 and S2, raises $ that in this division loose something namely the object a. We recall the schema that shows the intersection between Being and Other that cause the loss of a which, from this division, doesn‘t belong neither to Being nor the Other. The theory of the four discourses is still a theory that attempts to explain the relation between subject and object, or between the subject and the drive that goes around to catch the object in a way that always misses it. We could think the question of sex being linked to the question of the object a, either for the choice of sex or for the choice of the sexual partner. If we consider the question of choice of sex and the choice of the sexual partner related to the theory of the four discourses, we make the hypothesis that not all subjects arrive at the choice of sex, sometimes stopping at the choice of semblance that allows as well to the choice of a partner. Either in the theory of discourses, represented graphically by four algorithms, or in the schema of the formulas of sexuation, the arrows represent the movement of the subject towards the Other or towards the enjoyment. That is the question we posed at the beginning that we want to develop in our research: how the subject reaches the object of his enjoyment, an object that comes to him from the Other

Bahar, Mchmet. "Investigation of biology students' cognitive structure through word association tests, mind maps and structural communication grids." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/39028/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this research study was to investigate the cognitive structure (i.e. the relationship between concepts in mind) of biology students/pupils. Three techniques, namely Word Association Tests (in the topic "Genetics"), Mind Maps (in the topic "Seed Structure") and Structural Communication Grids (in the topics "Food Digestion, Chemistry of Respiration and Haemophilia") were used for this purpose. Furthermore, it was also planned to investigate the effect of some psychological factors (i.e. Field Dependence/Field Independence, Convergence/Divergence and Working Memory Capacity) on the relationship between concepts in students' long term memory as well as to reveal the relationship between these three psychological factors. 101 pupils at Higher Grade Biology (age 16-17) from four different secondary schools in the Central Belt of Scotland and around 400 first year biology students in Glasgow University have participated in this research. The results of the word association test (WAT) showed that students generated many ideas related to given key words. However, the results of both maps (in order to map the structures, relatedness coefficient values and response frequencies were used) clearly revealed that the ideas about genetics clustered as only a few isolated islands in students' cognitive structure and they did not appear to see the overall picture as a network of related ideas. In terms of the relationship between psychological factors and the WAT, only the Convergence/Divergence thinking style showed a significant relationship with the WAT. That is, students who had divergent thinking style gave a larger total number of responses and a wider range of responses to the key words in the WAT than the students who had convergent thinking style. Mind maps were used in this research study as an alternative to a linear way of planning essay writing and also to gain an insight into students' ideas lodged in cognitive structure. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference (in favour of mind mappers) between essay (on Seed Germination) marks of mind mappers and non-mind mappers. A statistically significant correlation between mind map scores and essay scores also appeared, indicating that students who drew better mind maps, had higher scores in essays. The examination of mind maps and the essays of the students also revealed that some students did not mention the same major ideas in their maps and in their essays. In addition, some misconceptions appeared in the students' mind maps as well as in their essays. In terms of the effect of psychological factors on mind mapping (only Convergence/Divergence thinking styles were examined), the mind maps of divergent students were more complex and branched than those of convergent students. For the secondary schools, the results of Structural Communication Grids (SCG) showed that pupils had misconceptions about the topics of "Food Digestion and the Chemistry of Respiration." SCG were also used as an evaluation tool for the first year biology students on the topic "Haemophilia." The effect of some psychological factors (i.e. Field Dependence/Field Independence and Convergence/Divergence) were also examined. The results revealed that overall performance of the field independent pupils in the grids was better than field dependent pupils. Pupils/students who had a divergent thinking style had higher scores than the pupils/students who had a convergent thinking style on grid questions. All results of these three techniques (i.e. word association tests, mind maps and structural communication grids) showed that they are very effective as diagnostic tools to illuminate the relationship between ideas in the long term memory of the students/pupils. Structural communication grids are also effective assessment tools. Implications for using these three techniques in the classroom as well as a self instructional method for students and as a supplement to the exams are also discussed.

Abstract:
Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by social, behavioral, and communicative deficits. Although there is no known cure for autism, there are many research-based interventions that aid in strengthening such deficits, especially those associated with failures of stimulus control One way to address such failures is to provide additional stimuli that enhance or override information provided by naturally occurring stimuli. Contingency maps are one such example. This study uses an observing response (i.e., hand-raising) to allow the subjects to request contingency maps. The purpose of this study is to identify if contingency maps function as reinforcers and if requests for information can be acquired using an observing-response paradigm. Major findings of the present study indicate that requests for information can be acquired and maintained by access to CMs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Populations of simultaneously recorded hippocampal place cells were studied in three tasks that required shuttling between a variably placed box and a reward location predicted by fixed or variably located landmarks. Groups of place cells fired at fixed locations relative to the behaviorally relevant landmarks or to the absolute spatial framework of the environment. The initial segment of the journeys was represented by a sequence of cells that fired at fixed distances with respect to the landmark of origin, behind the animal, irrespective of where that landmark was located. The final segments of the journeys were represented by cells that fired at fixed locations relative to the landmark of destination. We propose that on the initial parts of the journey, the spatial coordinate represented by each cell was updated predominantly by path integration. When approaching the landmark of destination, the coordinates were updated and corrected by visual landmarks (or other sensory cues). The intermediate zone was characterized by a transition from the reference frame of the origin to the reference frame of the destination. Small distortion of the environment led to a smooth, continuous transition, while a large distortion led to abrupt transitions. These observations suggest that in the hippocampus, place can be represented in multiple spatial reference frames established by behaviorally relevant landmarks. Further experiments showed that these landmarks, or their sensory properties, are not represented explicitly by place cells, because cells did not maintain their landmark-related firing in a similar task, performed in a different environment.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of the current study was to investigate how individuals navigate in an unfamiliar environment while using a map. What are the dynamical processes transpiring when an agent navigates in the environment using a tool to his aid? The emphasis was more specifically on the dynamic interaction between agent and artifact that together worked according to the Principle of Ecological Assembly (PEA) (Clark, 2008) and how this dynamical interaction could be analyzed from a situated problem-solving perspective. Moreover, the fact that individuals rely on cognitive artifacts in different circumstances is a quite trivial statement, but the related and less scrutinized question concerns temporality of cognitive work – when does the process of ecological assembly emerge during a problem-solving situation? Using cognitive ethnography as methodological approach to investigate the aforementioned research question, 17 research participants took part in this study that took place at the campus area of UC San Diego. The participants were given a physical map that represents the UCSD campus, and were given the primary task to reach a target destination from their current location within the campus area. It was found that individual sense of direction predicted the probability with which the ecological assembly was initiated, supporting the underlying assumption that the formal probability (P) of ecological assembly in any given domain relies on a set of variables where individual proficiency at any given task is a continuous variable. The hypothesis was confirmed in conjunction with a set of peripheral but relevant and interesting findings regarding how individuals increase the cognitive congeniality (Kirsh, 1996) of their environment during thehighly interactive problem-solving activity. An unexpected finding was also that individuals relying primarily on route knowledge during navigation, rather than survey knowledge, more frequently spontaneously aligned the map in synchrony with the surrounding environment while navigating, suggesting a different registration process preference between map as pictorial external representation and the world.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to explore gay men's relationship with their parents before and after the revelation of their sexual orientation towards their parent(s). Six men, who voluntarily offered to participate in the study, were interviewed by means of a semi-structured interview. These interviews were initially tape recorded and there after transcribed by the researcher. To be included in the study the participants had to comply with the following criteria: i) they had to be male; ii) 18 years or older; iii) have revealed their sexual orientation towards one or both parents; vi) be English or Afrikaans speaking; v) reside within Paarl, Stellenbosch or Cape Town; and vi) accept that no remuneration would be received for participation in this research. The process by which data was analysed mainly included : The organisation of data, the generation of categories, themes and patterns, testing the emerging categories and patterns, seeking alternative explanations, and writing the final report. Findings from the research study include four main themes, with ten sub-themes identified. Firstly, the nature of the relationship between the mother and the gay son before disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes were: i) Confirmation that the revelation was usually first made towards the mother or siblings, ii) the stadium of self-awareness and process of self-empowering of the son about his gay identity before disclosure towards the mother, iii) mentioning that the mother was aware of the sons' sexual preferences before disclosure, and iv) the relationship between mother and son and the supporting role that she plays within the parental context after disclosure. Secondly, the nature of the relationship between the father and the gay son before the revelation of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes were: i) mention of a patriarchal system that existed within the parental relationship, which could be linked to the fathers' social perception, including, amongst others, homophobia, and ii) the father/son relationship after disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. Thirdly, parental involvement regarding acceptance and support after disclosure of the sons' sexual orientation. The associated sub-themes are:i) the avoidance of the gay subject by the parents during communication within the family context, ii) the sensitivity and avoidance of discussions about lovers or companions within the family relationship, and iii) the regularity of contact between the parent(s) and their gay son after disclosure. Lastly, the nature of the relationship between the gay brother and his siblings before the revelation of his sexual orientation. The associated sub-theme were: i) the unconditional acceptance and support of the siblings. These themes are subsequently discussed in terms of existing research literature in this field of study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Currently there is a significant growth of the elderly population, in absolute and relative numbers highlighting the significant increase of the population aged over 80 years. A recent diagnosis of the elderly population in Brazil found that while the number of elderly is increasing at around 3.5% a year, people over 80 years are increasing 4.7% per year. Given the increasing life expectancy, a phenomenon experienced in developed countries and developing countries, the challenge that presents itself is the maintenance of health and quality of life in individuals with advanced age. The concept of Health and Quality of Life is widely debated and constantly revised, particularly with regard to the elderly population. Therefore research on the conditions under which enjoy good health and quality of life in old age is scientific and social interest. This research aimed to understand the perception of health and quality of life of elderly men over 75 years of age and to investigate and understand old age, including concept, challenges and myths about this process. This dissertation is divided into two articles: the first article consists of a theoretical study and presents a panorama of old age, their characteristics, myths and challenges. The second deals with health and quality of life from the perspective of older men, if those aged over 75 years, as stated.

Li, Hengshan. "Evaluation of multi-level cognitive maps for supporting between-floor spatial behavior in complex indoor environments." Thesis, The University of Maine, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10294740.

Full text
Abstract:

People often become disoriented when navigating in complex, multi-level buildings. To efficiently find destinations located on different floors, navigators must refer to a globally coherent mental representation of the multi-level environment, which is termed a multi-level cognitive map. However, there is a surprising dearth of research into underlying theories of why integrating multi-level spatial knowledge into a multi-level cognitive map is so challenging and error-prone for humans. This overarching problem is the core motivation of this dissertation.

We address this vexing problem in a two-pronged approach combining study of both basic and applied research questions. Of theoretical interest, we investigate questions about how multi-level built environments are learned and structured in memory. The concept of multi-level cognitive maps and a framework of multi-level cognitive map development are provided. We then conducted a set of empirical experiments to evaluate the effects of several environmental factors on users' development of multi-level cognitive maps. The findings of these studies provide important design guidelines that can be used by architects and help to better understand the research question of why people get lost in buildings. Related to application, we investigate questions about how to design user-friendly visualization interfaces that augment users' capability to form multi-level cognitive maps. An important finding of this dissertation is that increasing visual access with an X-ray-like visualization interface is effective for overcoming the disadvantage of limited visual access in built environments and assists the development of multi-level cognitive maps. These findings provide important human-computer interaction (HCI) guidelines for visualization techniques to be used in future indoor navigation systems.

In sum, this dissertation adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining theories from the fields of spatial cognition, information visualization, and HCI, addressing a long-standing and ubiquitous problem faced by anyone who navigates indoors: why do people get lost inside multi-level buildings. Results provide both theoretical and applied levels of knowledge generation and explanation, as well as contribute to the growing field of real-time indoor navigation systems.

Krins, Phillip William. "Beyond the “Right Stuff”: The role of group processes in isolated confined extreme environments." Phd thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/49430.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to apply mainstream theoretical social psychology to group dynamics in isolated confined extreme (ICE) environments, with a particular focus on the context of long duration spaceflight. This was done by providing a thorough review of both the ICE environment psychology literature and the social psychological literature. From this it emerged that significant gaps existed within the ICE literature around the understanding of group processes. A review of relevant social psychology literature suggested that the social identity perspective may have much to offer in advancing the understanding of group processes in these environments. It was argued that processes related to social identification plays a key role in the team functionality. Of particular note was how social ‘norms’ could influence social identification processes and group functioning. Crew heterogeneity had been cited as a potential concern in much ICE literature, so group norms that related to diversity were investigated. Three theoretical chapters provided a review of space and ICE environment psychology literature, social psychology literature and diversity literature. Five experiments are reported in this thesis. The first, an exploratory field study which study took place during an expedition into the Australian Outback, made general predictions about how social identification might be constrained by the extreme environment context. The study demonstrated that identity processes did indeed influence group functionality, but also that the presence of pro-diversity group norms seemed to have a positive influence. In order to explore this issue in more detail, four studies were conducted. These included a field study at the Mars Desert Research station in Utah, two laboratory studies and a final field study that took place during a winter-over period at the Concordia Research station in Antarctica. Collectively these studies demonstrated that ingroup identification played an important role in driving group functionality in extreme environments. In addition they demonstrated that the presence of a pro-diversity group norm had the potential to increase group identification while also reducing the likelihood of negative outcomes (crew alienation and sub-group conflict). Multilevel Linear Modelling and Social Network Analysis were used in two of the studies and if adopted have the potential to significantly improve the validity of future extreme environment research. By using these techniques in this thesis, the certainty surrounding the research findings was greatly enhanced. Taken together the work of this thesis demonstrated three key points: that mainstream social psychology theory and research has much to offer extreme environment research.; social identification processes play a key role in the group dynamics of people in extreme environments; and that a pro-diversity norm, under certain conditions, can play an important role in maximising group functioning. The contribution of this thesis, then, has implications for the ICE literature as well as the social/organisational literature on group diversity and finally the kind of group culture that should be encouraged in extreme environments.
