Abstract:
Abstract: Financial discourse is applicable to many aspects of lived experience, as Geoffrey chaucer demonstrates in his ventriloquizing of a female cloth merchant, the Wife of Bath. As chaucer's Alisoun boldly states in her Prologue ( c . 1437), 'wynne whoso may, for al is for to selle'. For Alisoun, and by implication for chaucer's contemporary society, the knowledge that everything and everyone has a value to be exploited, is key. commercial discourse is central to Alisoun's portrayal in her Prologue and to the exchange of knowledge and marriage in her Tale . Business practice and phrasing are crucial to Alisoun's understanding of life and unite her roles as a medieval woman: spiritual, marital, sexual, and economic. By examining Margery Kempe's Boke (1436–38) and a range of the fifteenth-century Paston women's papers alongside The Wife of Bath's Prologue , this essay demonstrates that this was not just the case for chaucer's fictional Alisoun, but for a variety of women from the medieval English mercantile élite themselves.

Referring to fiction by Charles Dickens and Henry James, this essay considers the moral psychology of counterfactual narratives, studying pressures that invite the imagination of alternate lives. Such "optative" narratives, characteristic of realism, typically become important within particular environments of attention; glancing at economic and ideological factors, the argument focuses on marriage and the loss of children.

This study analyses the timing of first entry into marriage of Hungarian men and women born between 1916 and 1967. Marriages take place at a considerably earlier age than the West European average, and at the same time show significant differences between cohorts. In the course of the analysis we consider the social and economic circumstances which affect the timing of entry into marriage, and we connect the variables of men and women's educational attainment with their age at marriage. In each cohort we examine the sociological characteristics of those who marry significantly earlier or later than the average for their generation, i.e. than the “normal” age.

Abstract:
Marriage is a physical and spiritual bond in the form of a union between a man and a woman based on the desire to have offspring and a family. Basically, marriage is carried out by someone who has matured physically, psychologically and economically. However, in Indonesia, around 12-20% can still be found marriages that have not been accompanied by readiness from various aspects such as physical, economic, and knowledge of household life. This article uses qualitative and descriptive research methods that will explore more about early marriage and its relation to reproductive health. Early marriage is carried out by someone who is under 19 years old on average who is not ready for various aspects of marriage. This is likely to have an impact on reproductive health for both women and men. Therefore, various aspects of preparation are needed in carrying out the marriage so that efforts to avoid the negative impact of early marriage on reproductive health can be minimized

Abstract:
Families in the Mesopotamian society are based on strong relations, such as marriage, which is accepted by traditions, customs and laws. Many marriage contracts were authenticated on muddy boards (tablets). Marriage is a social, legislative and legal union between man and woman, its aim is to produce children, to establish a family and create social, economic relations that will have an effect on the future. The impact of these relations will affect many of the families that have a direct relationship between the husband and the wife. The economic situations, the social status and the intellectual aspects of the Mesopotamian society have contributed to identifying the marriage system. Although there is no sufficient information about the first aspects of marriage in Mesopotamia, it may be affected by different phases which affect also primitive unions before they were civilized. Through studying the legal items and analyzing the daily documents of marriage, it is revealed that its rules were developed and made complicated in Mesopotamia and they did not differ from the rules of marriage in the Eastern communities of our present time. Marriage has specific rituals according to customs and traditions. Marriage rituals differ according to those prevalent in each community; depending on the environmental circumstances and the social and culture aspects of the community. The agricultural communities are similar to the community of Mesopotamia; marriage in the rural community is a necessary demand up till now, aiming at bringing children to the world or motivating women to help men in their work, such as sowing the land.

Abstract:
AbstractThe high amount of mahr paid by the groom to the bride, among other marriage payments, constitutes a real burden for young Omanis today. This article sheds light on the main factors and motives that determine the amount of the mahr. Paradoxically, new consumerist desires, more highly educated women, and “love marriages” seem to coincide inversely with rising marriage payments. Modernization variables, such as women’s education and exogamous marriages, are not decreasing the mahr as predicted by theories of modernization, nor is institutional regulation effectively decreasing the amount. Beyond its economic aspects, mahr needs to be situated in its social, political, and cultural dimensions to better understand the complexity and variability of this institution. This article answers fundamental questions about how the mahr amount is fixed and negotiated between families in Oman. The study was carried out in Oman in 2016. Thirty-nine semi-structured interviews were conducted in different areas of the country in order to give firsthand information on the evolution, motives, perceptions, experiences, attitudes, and mechanisms related to matrimonial decision-making and familial strategies during the mahr bargaining. In addition to ethnographic research, a general online survey was conducted to provide statistical data on the main economic and non-economic factors that determine the mahr amount.

Abstract:
In fact, parenting jurisprudence does not only target children physically until they are mumayyiz (able to choose and choose good actions) as is found in many classical jurisprudence books, but also their psychology, including their mental and economic readiness for marriage. Until now, the main trigger for many cases of stunting is still caused by early marriage. Early marriage occurs because child care is only oriented towards meeting the child's physical needs, while spiritual needs still do not receive significant attention. Efforts in this direction can be made by contextualizing parenting jurisprudence that parenting is not only about the child's physical aspects but also spiritual aspects and economic readiness. This is reflected in the history of the Prophet's life as a child, receiving maximum nurturing education both regarding his physical and psychological well-being, as well as economic readiness, with the Prophet being included in every trade mission with his uncle. The implications of this contextualization of parenting jurisprudence are at least a new orientation of parenting jurisprudence in efforts to minimize stunting. Apart from that, it also serves as a legal standing for child care activities to comprehensively pay attention to children's physical, psychological and economic readiness.

This paper examines the legacies of colonialism using Abagusii, a community in western Kenya, as a case study. Firstly, the paper briefly summarizes the key aspects of Abagusii marriage relations in pre-colonial society. It then defines colonialism in the context of Gusii and examines the effects of invasion, the spread of western ideals, the influence of western education, and missionary interactions in the highlands. The research also looks at how colonial economic and social policies affected marriage relationships. The main contention made in this essay is that pre-colonial and colonial social-political and economic dynamics, in combination, have shaped and continued marriage ties across time

Abstract:
Child marriage in Pakistan is associated with social, economic, and juridical aspects rather than mere religion. It is an exception to general Islamic law for the best interests of the child. The determination of the legal age of marriage for a child is discussed, but no efficient steps are taken in Pakistan. Marriage is still regulated by an old ambiguous colonial law. Furthermore, penal amendments are introduced with zero implementation. Although child marriage is covered by penal clauses, the courts recognise such marital contracts. Recently, FST (Federal Shariat Court) and IHC (Islamabad High Court) discussed this matter in detail and equalised child marriage as a crime clearly. These courts confirmed the determination of the legal age for marriage according to sharia. Moreover, several contemporary legal principles of Islamic jurisprudence are stressed on this issue. It is highlighted to examine child marriage in the context of social and public interest. The research at hand will review child marriage in the juridical context of the courts. It will denote the social aspects of this issue. This article will analyse the latest judgments of FST and IHC.

Abstract:
Today, a comprehensive study of social aspects, cultural and spiritual, as well as socio-economic, legal, educational and organizational features of family relations is one of the questions of the hour. The relevance of the issue is that, first of all, at the present stage of development of our society, it is socially necessary to conduct a scientific analysis of the Islamic doctrine regarding family relations in the process of increasing the spirituality of the Uzbek people, including religious literacy. Secondly, when analyzing and studying the basic principles of Sharia norms, it is necessary to correctly use this knowledge in the search for solutions to issues, reasons, and the nature of growing family divorces, which is very relevant today. In this regard, this article highlights the essence and characteristics, as well as the socio-economic, spiritual and cultural foundations of the conditions and obstacles to marriage, in Islamic teachings, which were considered in the region as traditions. The article also examines and comparatively analyzes the religious, spiritual, legal, economic and educational factors of the conditions of marriage: free mutual consent to marriage, participation of witnesses in marriage, equality, makhr; circumstances that prevent marriage: a ban on marriage between relatives, issues of marriageable age under Islamic law with the norms of family law.

Despite the availability of a large amount of scientific data on the negative impact of consanguineous marriages on the health of children born in such families, the significance of this problem is not decreasing in a number of countries. Aim. Analysis of the modern scientific base on the problem of consanguineous marriages, assessment of their impact on the development of a particular pathology in children. The article reflects the position of modern clinical recommendations, the results of recent studies, and some controversial and unresolved issues. Despite the emerging trend of declining consanguineous marriages in recent decades, this problem involves at least 20% of the population and dozens of countries around the world. The prevalence of consanguineous marriages in the world varies significantly, ranging from 0.1-0.4% in the United States and European countries to more than 50% in North Africa, the Middle East and West Asia. The most common form of consanguineous marriage is a marriage between first cousins. In general, rural residents who have a lower level of education are more likely to enter into consanguineous marriages. Conclusion. Despite a number of positive social and economic aspects of consanguineous marriages, from the point of view of genetics and medicine, it is necessary to take into account the negative impact of consanguineous marriages, which consists in an increased genetic risk to offspring and a high incidence of congenital pathology in newborns. An assessment of the socio-demographic aspects of consanguineous marriages shows that their greater prevalence is often due to poor economic conditions, lack of education, and low social security.

Abstract:
Background: The celebration of university students’ marriage ceremonies in Iran nearly dates back three decades, but its positive and negative aspects require further reconsideration. This study is intended to explore those aspects in the words of university students who married during their studies at the university. Methods: In this qualitative study, a qualitative content analysis method was used to evaluate the experiences and perceptions of students. Sixteen university students (8 couples) were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed at Sabzevar University of Medical Sciences, Iran, in 2016. The participants, who were newly-wed couples with an age range of 18 to 28 years, attended a semi-structured in-depth interview. Results: The analyzed data emerged as four major categories (and eleven subcategories), including (a) inspirational and prompting factors (membership in the student unions, enhanced opportunity to know peers, attitude change towards marriage on the campus, and peers sharing experiences of marriage on the campus), (b) existence of supportive resources (existence of social support, and existence of economic support for marriage on the campus), (c) barriers and failing marriages (barriers against marriage on the campus and causes of failure), and (d) achievements in marital life (social maturation, enhancing life goals, and maturational development in the married life). Conclusion: University students’ marriage on campus offers couples a successful married life in the future. Social maturation and development in married life are the fruit of such marriages; however, economic problems and low social and family support are still among the concerns for university students wishing to marry at the university.

In recent years, with the development of the economy, both urban and rural areas in Gansu have made great progress in various aspects, but the official survey data shows that the level of economic development and living standards are not positively correlated with the marriage rate in Gansu. This may caused by the marriage and love view of youth. These years. Thanks to the rapid development of Chinas economy, the fertility rate in Gansu has declined. This research speculates that this may be due to the new ideas brought by economic development, which have caused some changes in their views on marriage and love. In this paper will study how views on marriage and love affect the marriage rate based on a questionnaire survey. Because most of the existing studies are conducted in economically developed coastal or southern cities, and places like Gansu in the central and western regions are less concerned, this paper decided to take Gansu as an example to explore.

From the results of this literature study, it can provide an understanding of the development and prevention of early marriage and seek therapeutic and comprehensive preventive measures.

This article evaluates criticisms by Sarah G. Carmichael, Alexandra de Pleijt, Jan Luiten van Zanden, and Tine De Moor of our view of the European Marriage Pattern (EMP), and explains why their claims are incorrect. We elaborate our arguments concerning the institutional sources of economic growth, explore the relationship between women's position and the EMP, analyze the two-way links between demographic and economic behavior, and explicate aspects of our empirical analysis that these scholars find puzzling. The causes of European economic growth, we reiterate, are not to be found in the EMP but rather must be sought in the wider framework of nonfamilial institutions.

Abstract:
Background: Early marriage is a long established custom in India. In spite of the legislations prohibiting early marriages, the prevalence of child marriages in our country is 30.2%, with the highest prevalence in Rajasthan (35.4%) and lowest in Himachal Pradesh (0.5%).Thus, this study was undertaken to study the prevalence, determinants and impact of early marriage on the mother and her newborn in an urban area of Davangere. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of 6 months in the Urban Family Welfare Centre, Doddapete. A total of 900 mothers were interviewed with the help of pre- designed and semi-structured questionnaire after taking informed consent. Results: The prevalence of child marriage in the present study was found to be 13% with 81% mothers belonging to lower socio- economic status and 77% belonging to Muslim religion. Most (62%) mothers married before the age of 18 years due to economic reasons. 54% of the mothers who married before the age of 18 years faced complications during delivery. 6% of the mothers married before the age of 18 years gave birth to low birth weight babies. Conclusions: The literacy and socio-economic status of the mother and her parents was observed as a major determinant in deciding the age at marriage. In spite of the prevailing religious traditions and socio-cultural influences that promote child marriage, an attempt should be made to educate the community regarding the medical and legal aspects of early marriage.

Abstract:
The Indonesian Constitutional Court granted part of the claim for the judicial review lawsuit on Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage for Article 7 Paragraph 1 related to the age of marriage. The article is considered discriminatory against women and is considered legalizing child marriages because the lowest age limit for women can be married is 16 years old, different from the lowest age limit for men, 19 years old. The global consensus on the need to abolish early marriage, forced marriage, and child marriage is actually made and agreed upon by UN member countries, including Indonesia. There are a number of adverse effects that can arise in child marriage, such as impacts related to health, education and economic aspects, including violations of children's rights. This paper examines the age limit of marriage in the perspective of Islamic law, which can then become state policy. Marriage is a legal act that requires the doers to meet the criteria of legal competency. Marriage also requires the responsibility of the parties to fulfill their rights and obligations, so that the aspect of maturity in marriage is a must.

This article studies social dynamics in the Catalan region of Girona during the second half of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries, using marriage contracts signed before a notary. The analysis of this source reveals the existence of important social and economic changes, especially among the lowest groups of rural society. Among these transformations, the increase in the real value of dowries – especially in the case of treballadors (literally labourers) – stands out particularly, as does the appearance of new labels applied to new social groups. However, these changes occurred without altering the basic aspects of marriage patterns of the different social groups, as indicated by the strong stability of levels of social and geographical endogamy.

Abstract:
Child marriage is a controversial issue in many countries, including Indonesia, due to its negative impact on girls. Indonesian law regulates the minimum age for marriage, but there are still gaps in its implementation. This issue also relates to social, economic, and health impacts, such as reproductive health risks and limited access to education. This research aims to review the implementation of child marriage policies, policy orientations, and their impact on the understanding and implementation of maslahah mursalah values. This study uses normative legal research methods to examine the issue of child marriage based on the normative aspects present in applicable legislation. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of child marriage policies based on maslahah mursalah in Indonesia should be holistic, considering social, cultural, religious, and legal aspects. This policy should prioritize the common welfare and protection of children's rights, with an emphasis on education, legal protection, reproductive health, and reducing social stigma. The importance of collaboration between the government, NGOs, religious leaders, and the community in designing and implementing this policy is emphasized. Regular evaluations need to be conducted to ensure the effectiveness of the policy in achieving the goals of child protection and public welfare. Additionally, consideration should be given to the cultural and religious diversity in Indonesia while adhering to international commitments supporting the prohibition of child marriage.

Therefore, various aspects of preparation are needed in carrying out the marriage so that efforts to avoid the negative impact of early marriage on reproductive health can be minimized.

Though in the last two decades the scholarship on alternative discourses produced by Muslim women have been multitudinous, there is a scarcity of critical investigations dealing with creative constructions of postfeminist, empowered Muslim woman, not battling with patriarchal power structures, but negotiating aspects that matter most in real life: human associations and familial formations. This paper engages with the categories of love, marriage, and sexuality, drawing upon the lives of four educated, successful, „velvet class‟ Saudi women. The significance of this study is linked with carefully challenging some of the stereotypes about Arab women as victims of forced marriages and their commonly perceived discomfort with love at large. The study reveals that it is men who need to “man up” against cultural conventions since women are increasingly expressive in their choices and brave enough to face the consequences audaciously.

Abstract:
The institution of marriage has undergone significant changes throughout history, and in recent times, there has been a noticeable shift among women towards prioritizing love and personal fulfillment as key factors influencing their decision to marry. As women's education has advanced, there has been a corresponding decrease in the rate of marriage to a certain degree. Nevertheless, a discernible pattern has emerged wherein modern women are increasingly articulating apprehension towards the institution of marriage, citing a multitude of factors including familial obligations, economic encumbrances, and the potential curtailment of individual autonomy. This study employs a literature review method to examine the various aspects that contribute to the phenomenon of marriage apprehension among women in modern society. Specifically, it investigates the evolving perspectives of women towards love, marriage, and cultural norms as key determinants of this anxiety. The primary objective of this study is to examine women's perspectives on marriage and the factors contributing to their decision to remain unmarried. By doing so, this research aims to shed light on prevailing societal issues and the unrealistic societal expectations and demands placed on women in Chinese culture.

The aims of the study are as follows: (a) What factors influence early marriage? b) What are the effects of early marriage on the rights of children? This is normative legal study, i.e., legal research that seeks to identify procedures, standards, or das sollen. This research was undertaken through library research in order to gather secondary data, including primary and secondary legal texts. Primary legal materials are binding legal documents, such as marriage and children's rights legislation. Comparatively, secondary legal materials are those that provide an explanation of the primary legal resources. The findings of the study indicate that marriages done below the legal age restriction are prevalent. Marriage demands psychological maturity, thus age restrictions are extremely crucial. Multiple factors, including environmental factors, health considerations, family parenting factors, and economic aspects, contribute to the occurrence of early marriage. Early marriage will have an effect on the non-fulfillment of statutory children's rights, such as the child's right not to be separated from his parents, the child's right to receive an appropriate education, and the child's right to obtain protection.

Abstract:
Since the publication of the seminal book of essays Household and family in past time in 1972, much research on the history of the family has concentrated on the situation in western and eastern Europe, and relied almost exclusively on census-type documents. It is, for example, established that whereas mean household size was small, the mean age at first marriage fairly high and neo-localism (the formation of an independent household on marriage) dominant in western Europe, almost the opposite applied in eastern Europe. Yet these findings do not preclude the possibility of discovering regions where in statistical terms the mean household size was not large and the proportion of complex households not particularly high, but where the neo-local mode of household formation was not the norm. Such a region could have a preference for joint families (two or more married sons co-residing with their father) with a low-fertility demographic regime, or stem families (one co-residing married son) with that of intermediate to low fertility.Traditional Japan is an example of just such a stem-family society. There the household, not the individual, was perceived as the basic social and legal unit of society. This unit was called ie and its headship, authority and property were expected to be handed down from the father to a particular son, enabling the household to follow alternating stages of ‘simple’, ‘multiple’ and ‘extended’ forms over the developmental cycle, more or less in accordance with the predictions of Lutz Berkner. As articles in the section of Laslett and Wall's Household and family on Japan have already shown, the mean household size in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan was not higher than that in England, but the mean age at marriage was lower than in the English population. Moreover, household formation and succession rules under the Japanese ie system were not compatible with the simple family mode.

With regard to marriage problems in Indonesia, the age limit of marriage is regulated in positive law contained in Law Number 1 of 1974 and KHI, namely Marriage is only permitted if the male has reached the age of 19 (nineteen) years and the woman has reached the age 16 (sixteen) years, which was later revised in Law Number 16 of 2019 which states that marriage is only permitted if a man and woman have reached the age of 19 (nineteen) years, then if seen from the maslahah concept this determination is at the daruriyyah level, namely maintaining the safety of the soul (hifzu al-nafs), maintaining the safety of the mind (hifzu al-'aql), and maintaining the safety of the offspring (hifzu al-nasl). The change in the minimum age of marriage that occurs in the Marriage Law Article 7 paragraph (1) No. 1 of 1974 contains more maslahah and is more in accordance with maqasid sharia. Because at the age of 19, it is hoped that the ideal marriage can be accomplished and be able to realize the goals of marriage, such as maintaining offspring, creating a sakinah mawaddah wa rahmah family, maintaining lineages, creating patterns of family relationships, maintaining diversity in the family and preparing for economic aspects.

Abstract:
The examination of demographic patterns and their variables is essential for our understanding of the anthropological and cultural processes that shape modern societies. Greek Thrace plays an important role in such analyses due to the cultural and socioeconomic variability it presents. This study is based on vital registration data of the 20th century, derived by various populations that inhabit the Department of Rhodopi, which are defined by discrete socio-economic, cultural, and historic backgrounds. We analyze and present various aspects of the social lives observed in these populations: marriage patterns, mean age at marriage of the spouses, mean age of mothers at first and last child, reproductive span, the children ever born, as well as other parameters related to reproduction. Our analyses show that several changes in marriage patterns have been undertaken throughout time, indicating an ongoing fertility transition. In that way, this study contributes to our knowledge on the anthropological populations from this part of Greece in relation to their socio-economic environment and it proposes possible analogies and differences that affected the evolution of the embedded populations.

Abstract:
Although marriage is a social institution but marital status and age at marriage are important demographic determinants as these aspects influence the pattern of fertility and natural growth of population. Studying the various aspects of marital status of any population group especially the figures related to women can give an exposition about the probability of fertility rate as well as social manifestation prevailing in the society. It also helps to understand the preferred specific age at marriage for women. However, little is known about the marital status of women living in Assam cutting across religions—Hindu, Muslim and Christian. In this backdrop, an attempt has been made through this research to examine the changing trend of marital status among the Hindu, Muslim and Christian women of Assam. The research is based on secondary data and Census information and considers the entire state of Assam. Census data of 2001 and 2011 shows interesting and striking information about the changing situation of marital status among the Hindus, Muslims and Christians of the state. It is arguable that the study linked to female marital status is saliently more influencing in this context as it determines the socio-economic status of women and pattern of fertility in any society. Among the different religions of Assam, Hindu women have the highest married proportion followed by Christian while Muslim is the lowest in the same category. Depending on the socio-cultural practices, economic conditions and the level of educational attainment, the age at marriage varies among the religious groups. The proportion of woman being married at a younger age has been less, is an indication of advancement in the educational scenario.

Law No. 16 of 2019 has set the legal age allowed for marriage to 19 for both men and women and this change, from previously 19 for men and 16 for women, has sparked a discussion among scholars. This study aims to examine this provision from the aspects of gender and maqāṣid al-sharia. This research uses a normative juridical approach with qualitative data analysis, which concludes that equalizing the age of marriage between men and women at 19 years old has realized gender equality in terms of eliminating discrimination against women in obtaining their rights such as health, education, and economic rights, and can eliminate the dominance of a husband over his wife because marrying at the same age (adulthood) will have a positive effect on the way the couple treats each other. Marriage age equality from the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharia has realized maqāṣid al-tab'iyah (supporting objectives) at the level of al-taḥsīniyah because it makes marriage more prestigious and dignified.

Abstract:
Abstract. This study aims to compare the social life of Tokyo workers and what Yoshihiro Tatsumi describes in the comic gekiga “Abandon the Old in Tokyo” in the period of Japan’s rapid economic growth (mid 1950-early 1970) using the sociological approach of literary works. Social life that will be studied is specifically on the social interactions of Tokyo workers with society, employers, colleagues, parents and also the form of the worker's family system at that time. The method used in this study is the qualitative descriptive method. The findings showed that the comic story, despite being a work of fiction, does indeed depict the real social conditions of Tokyo workers during a period of rapid economic growth where workers tend to be individualistic and hedonistic. The rapid changes in Tokyo at that time does not carry over into the work environment where workers still adhere to patrilineal management which is very formal, however between colleagues some form of informality and intimacy still exists in the face of extremely difficult working conditions. Meanwhile, the neglect of parents by the younger generation occurs a lot due to changes in the family system changing from the IE system to the kazoku system, the economic and the housing situation, as well as the relationship between family members is no longer close. Marriage no longer occurs to maintain the IE system and customs, rather, marriage occurs on the basis of love between husband and wifeKeywords: Sociological Analysis, Abandon the Old in Tokyo, Gekiga, Workers

Abstract:
This article examines the impact of landholding and differences in local economies on age at marriage, on frequency of service and on household size and structure in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Particular stress is placed on the role of economic rather than cultural factors as determinants of regional variations in marriage age and household structures. Households were more complex whenever land, the accumulation of capital and multiple occupations were required for economic activity. Conversely, wage work – whether in fishing or agriculture and regardless of geographical location (for example in eastern as well as western Finland) – favoured the formation of small nuclear households. Some aspects of the family system (servanthood and a late age at marriage) fit the characteristics of the north-west European household system as delineated by John Hajnal and Peter Laslett better than others (frequency of complex households). It is concluded that there is no inevitable correlation between geographic location and the characteristics of a society's family system and that the model of the north-west European household system does not accommodate those societies where people were in a position to build strategies based on the continuous possession of land.

Abstract:
Research over the years has shown that in order for any business to survive, the correct product mix must be offered to the market. If the product does not satisfy the needs of the market, its reason for existence can be questioned. This principle applies to all businesses – big or small. The question arises if SMEs adhere to this fact and, if so, how they go about doing this. SMEs over the world make huge contributions to economic growth and job creation and are seen to be a driving force for economic growth and development in any economy. In the highly competitive environment that SMEs operate in, selecting the right merchandise for the right customer is important and, in most instances, its ability to survive or perish. This study aimed to determine if SMEs in South Africa make decisions regarding the product mix and, if so, if they conform to different profiles regarding the decisions that they make. A questionnaire was used to collect the data and was sent to SMEs around South Africa operating in different industries. The results indicated that SMEs in South Africa consider product characteristics, consumer behavior and strategic aspects when making product mix decisions.
