Abstract:
This article examines Samuel Taylor Coleridge's marriage and family life. Coleridge first met his wife Sarah Fricker in Bristol in the summer of 1794, and their marriage proved to be an unhappy one. Coleridge married Sarah only because of social constraints, and they separated in 1808 due to their financial difficulties and Coleridge's deteriorating mental state caused by his opium addiction. The article also discusses Coleridge's relationship with his children.

Abstract:
This book aims to provide some general understandings towards persons with visual disability as well as provide some contextual insights of their marriage, focusing on the phenomena of happiness. A common stigma surrounding persons with visual disability is that their lives might be filled with challenges, and thus facing difficulties in managing familial institution. The authors would like to provide a different perspective, focusing on the positive aspects of the lives of persons with visual disabilities, hence highlighting that such population is equal to the non-disabled. This book is divided into six chapters, which encompasses topics such as the theoretical viewpoints of happiness, the phenomena of marital happiness illustrated through three cases which include the dimensions and sources of marital happiness, as well as the strategies applied to improve or maintain marital happiness.

Brontë, Charlotte. Shirley. Edited by Herbert Rosengarten, Margaret Smith, and Janet Gezari. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199540808.001.0001.

Abstract:
‘You expected bread, and you have got a stone; break your teeth on it, and don’t shriek…you will have learned the great lesson how to endure without a sob.’ Shirley is Charlotte Brontë’s only historical novel and her most topical one. Written at a time of social unrest, it is set during the period of the Napoleonic Wars, when economic hardship led to riots in the woollen district of Yorkshire. A mill-owner, Robert Moore, is determined to introduce new machinery despite fierce opposition from his workers; he ignores their suffering, and puts his own life at risk. Robert sees marriage to the wealthy Shirley Keeldar as the solution to his difficulties, but he loves his cousin Caroline. She suffers misery and frustration, and Shirley has her own ideas about the man she will choose to marry. The friendship between the two women, and the contrast between their situations, is at the heart of this compelling novel, which is suffused with Brontë’s deep yearning for an earlier time.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this book is to provide a highly practical guide for school professionals to efficiently address cases of youth with school refusal behavior at different levels of severity and complexity. School refusal behavior can consist of full or part-day absences, tardiness, skipped classes, morning misbehaviors in an attempt to miss school, and school attendance under considerable duress. School refusal behavior is a pervasive and difficult problem faced by many types of mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists), school officials (e.g., administrators, guidance counselors, school-based social workers, school psychologists), and others (e.g., pediatricians, probation officers). School refusal behavior, even in mild forms, has been shown to be a significant risk factor for social, behavioral, and academic problems in middle childhood and adolescence as well as psychiatric, economic, and occupational difficulties in adulthood. This book provides assessment and intervention strategies along a multi-tiered model that includes systemic approaches to prevent school absenteeism (Tier 1), clinical techniques for emerging or moderate cases of absenteeism (Tier 2), and educational and other procedures for chronic and severe cases of absenteeism (Tier 3).

Tuten, Belle S. Daily Life of Women in Medieval Europe. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400637490.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is an introduction to the everyday lives of medieval European women: how they ate and slept, what their work was like, and the many factors that shaped their experiences. Ordinary people are often hard to see in the historical record. This resource for students reveals the everyday world of the Middle Ages for women: sex, marriage, work, and power. Using up-to-date scholarship from both archeology and history, this book covers major daily concerns for medieval people, their understanding of the world, their relationships with others, and their place in society. It attempts to clarify what we know and what we do not know about women's daily lives in the Western European Middle Ages, between approximately 500 and 1500 CE. The book's focus is everyday life, so the topics are organized around women's chores, expectations, and difficulties, especially with regard to sexuality and childbirth. In addition to broad survey information about the Middle Ages, the book also introduces major women writers and thinkers and provides some examples of their work, giving the reader an opportunity to engage with the women themselves.

Idema, Wilt L. The Pitfalls of Piety for Married Women. Cornell University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.7591/cornell/9781501758362.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book shows how problematic the practice of Buddhist piety could be in late imperial China. Two thematically related “precious scrolls” (baojuan) from the Ming dynasty, The Precious Scroll of the Red Gauze and The Precious Scroll of the Handkerchief, illustrate the difficulties faced by women whose religious devotion conflicted with the demands of marriage and motherhood. These two previously untranslated texts tell the stories of married women whose piety causes them to be separated from their husbands and children. While these women labor far away, their children are cruelly abused by murderous stepmothers. Following many adventures, the families are reunited by divine intervention and the evil stepmothers get their just deserts. While the texts in The Pitfalls of Piety for Married Women praise Buddhist piety, they also reveal many problems concerning married women and mothers. The text translations are preceded by an introduction that places these scrolls in the context of Ming dynasty performative literature, vernacular literature, and popular religion. Set in a milieu of rich merchants, the texts provide a unique window to family life of the time, enriching our understanding of gender during the Ming dynasty. These popular baojuan offer rare insights into lay religion and family dynamics of the Ming dynasty, and their original theme and form enrich our understanding of the various methods of storytelling that were practiced at the time.

Kearney, Christopher A. Helping Families of Youth with School Attendance Problems. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780190912574.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book is a highly practical guide to efficiently address cases of youth with school attendance problems at different levels of severity and complexity. School attendance problems are a pervasive and difficult dilemma faced by many types of mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists), school officials (e.g., administrators, guidance counselors, school-based social workers, school psychologists), and others (e.g., pediatricians, probation officers). School attendance problems, even in mild forms, are a significant risk factor for social, behavioral, and academic problems in middle childhood and adolescence as well as psychiatric, economic, and occupational difficulties in adulthood. This book takes a “nuts and bolts” approach that provides very specific and detailed recommendations and guidelines for assessment and intervention across a short period of time (e.g., four weeks). The book focuses less on descriptions of overall programs for absenteeism and more on specific procedures for many different types of cases. Many mental health and school-based professionals cannot logistically implement large-scale programs or even detailed manualized treatment protocols for their clients and schools. Thus, this book is meant to be a very practical guide to address school absenteeism at a relatively fast pace, and within the constraints of most private practices and school settings, while relying on empirically supported techniques. The book also considers developmental levels, with some chapters more applicable to elementary school children and others more suited to middle and high school adolescents.

Hague, Gill. History and Memories of the Domestic Violence Movement. Policy Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781447356325.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a one-off history of the women’s domestic violence movement in the UK with some international and global content. It celebrates transformative women’s activism on violence against women from the 1960s on. Interviews with activists, practitioners and abuse survivors provide reflection on this inspiring movement of social change for women, shaped by a generation of pioneering activists. The book is illustrated with memories, anecdotes and memoir, and with poems celebrating women’s activism. It also reflects on the movement challenging rape and sexual violence. It presents an analysis of the radical early politics of the domestic violence refuges and Women’s Aid in terms of the empowerment of women, collective working and attempting to break down differences between women providing and using services. This particular history is almost lost from view and the book aims to recall and celebrate it. Further, it details the challenges of the Black women’s movement and the development of specialist services for Black, minority ethnic and refugee (BMER) women. Legal, strategy and policy developments are outlined. Also covered are cutbacks, the difficulties of seeking funding within competitive commissioning frameworks and attacks on the sector in recent years, disproportionately experienced by BMER projects. The discussions include attention to harmful practices like ‘honour’-based violence, FGM and forced marriage. The book also discusses international activism on domestic violence, the relevance of shelters/refuges across the world and trans-national women’s partnerships. It outlines the development of feminist research on violence against women. Projects, campaigns and key activists are honoured throughout.
