In this work, we study the link, illustrated by the concept of social marker in speech (Scherer, & Giles, 1979), between language and intergroup relationships. The assumption is that these markers should not be regarded as individual features but well as vectors of the setting in language of the statutes, roles and positionings in a normative universe. Eight experiments are presented bearing various objects (AIDS, male homosexuality, "without-paper", Israeli-Palestinian conflict and intervention in Iraq). The results show that the markers, and by their skew the intergroup relationships, intervene indeed in the information processing in particular on emotional or conative dimensions. On the other hand, they do not intervene on the memorizing or the behaviour of the subjects. It is also observed that the markers take part in the construction of the opinions when the object is new in the social field. This work, to be extended, raises the question of marking at the time of media speeches

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome initially characterized by an isolated language disorder and which diagnosis is mainly clinical. Three main PPA subtypes have been described in the literature: logopenic PPA (lvPPA), semantic PPA (svPPA) and non-fluent/agrammatic PPA (nfavPPA). The latest data in the literature have highlighted a late diagnosis, sometimes erroneous, associated with the need for an early medical-care management. The creation of new tools for the diagnosis and classification of PPAs seems to be crucial for an early and adapted patients' care. The objective of this thesis is to verify the interest of the analysis of markers using new technologies such as motor activity parameters (graphic and gestural) and language activity parameters (linguistic and acoustic) within the speech therapy evaluation, to improve the early and differential diagnosis of PPAs.Initially, this thesis work made it possible to analyze the specificities of the PPA diagnosis among the 167,191 diagnoses recorded in the French National Alzheimer Bank between 2010 and 2016. We highlighted diagnostic wavering and misdiagnosis of patients with PPA. These results underline the importance of developing tools that can be integrated into speech therapy practice and that can allow a greater accuracy in diagnosis.Following these observations, we have demonstrated the interest of using new technologies that can be easily integrated into a diagnostic approach. By using touch tablets, we have demonstrated the interest of the analysis of graphic parameters, such as writing pressure and strokes, for the differential diagnosis of PPA patients in comparison with patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or patient with Posterior Cortical Atrophy. These parameters have also proven to be useful in the classification of the three main subtypes of PPA.To complete the evaluation of strokes for which the gestural behaviors during the pencil lifting times cannot be directly recovered on an electronic tablet, we were interested in the evaluation of the writing gesture in the context of a nfavPPA type of impairment. The video analysis showed a complementary interest for the more specific diagnosis of this non-fluent variant. In a third step, and in a perspective of multimodal analysis, we verified the interest of the contribution of language and acoustic analyses of patients with PPA.The ‘sentence span' test was used to compare the memory span of PPA and AD patients. Our results showed a significantly different verbal span. The vocal analysis allowed us, beyond the differential diagnosis PPA/AD and via temporal and prosodic acoustic markers, to differentiate the physiopathological profiles of lvPPA patients. Finally, in a post-Covid-19 pandemic context and more specifically because of the neurological disorders observed in post-acute Covid-19 syndrome, we questioned, through a systematic review and an experts' consensus, the relevance of using these motor and language markers for the early diagnosis of AD. Indeed, cognitive impairments in post-acute Covid-19 syndrome may, in the future, complicate the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases due to common disorders

The present PhD thesis presents the multimodal video corpus VIntAGe (Videos to study Interactions in AGEing) with the principal aim to describe the effects of aging in Mild Cognitive Impairment situation on pragmatic and communicative skills. We take as observable variables the verbal pragmatic markers and non-verbal pragmatic markers. This approach, at the interface of the psycholinguistics, cognitive and the speech and language pathology is part of a longitudinal research process in an ecological situation. The first part of the manuscript details the scientific expertise and knowledge related to the cognitive aging, to the multimodal communication and to the clinical pragmatics (Chap 1 to 3). The second part describes our research questions and our methods step by step: (i) from the selection of the five female participants over 75 years old with initial and longitudinal psychometric tests; (ii) to the collect and the analysis of the multimodal data; (iii) to finish on the multidimensional and statistical data analysis and the interpretation of the results (Chap 4 to 5).Our general findings indicate that with aging, verbal pragmatic markers acquire an interactive function that allows people with Mild Cognitive Impairment to maintain intersubjective relationships with their interlocutor. In addition, at the non-verbal level, gestural manifestations are increasingly mobilized over time with a preference for non-verbal pragmatic markers with a referential function and an adaptative function. The studies focusing on people with Mild Cognitive Impairment require longitudinal corpora i) to understand their evolution, ii) to provide the implication of the cognitive resilience in each individual (i.e. compensation, adaptation and heterogeneity), and iii) to take advantage of these parameters as evidence for research and earlier rehabilitation. We aim to show the benefits of linguistic and interactional scientific investigation methods through cognitive impaired aging, for clinicians and family caregivers

Linguisticsis a science and as a such must explain the facts of language. Our method draws its inspiration from biology. After reviewing the relevant literature, we attempt to relate the emergence of interrogation to other cognitive and linguistic phenomena. Interrogation appears in child language between the ages of two and three. Interestingly, numerous studies have established that animals do not use questions, so that interrogation seems to be an intrinsically human process. Wh- question words epitomize interrogation and almost every language has them. The logogen wh- has a precise neurological base. We study the Lara Corpus extracted from the CHILDES database. There is a correlation between MLU and the complexity of questions asked by the child. We also study wh- words and their collocations to highlight the existence of a network. This network allows us to elaborate a Minimal Mind Design. Interrogation emerged after the mutation of myh16 in our species and is body-based. It provides access to elaborate semantics and has played a crucial role in Western philosophy. Interrogation is the foundation of language-based interactions

This study concerns the acquisition of language specific discourse preferences in the first years of German as a foreign language in French secondary schools, and how new approaches could improve language instruction. Instead of focusing on verbal placement in declaratives, we decided to consider how learners start a sentence; that is, which constituent they decide to put before the finite verb form. The initial field in German (called pre-field) represents a syntactically undetermined position as it can be occupied by a variety of elements. To understand the constraints which influence the choice of the first constituent in a sentence, textual categories, as well as pragmatic and information-structural criteria, are required. These aspects were incorporated in the tasks the learners worked on in the classroom, in order to make them use such principles, and to modify the processing preferences they may have built up during acquisition of their L1. Acquisition draws on internal processes which set limits to instructional intervention. Practitioners should take these limitations into account if they aim to elaborate instructional proposals with linguistic and psycholinguistic relevance. Drawing on findings from the SLA research, we analyse the beginnings of sentences in a corpus of written and oral learner samples. We used these empirical observations as a guideline to redesign proposals for an instructional intervention which better fits a learning progression. Notions from different aspects of linguistics contribute to highlight specific functions of sentence beginnings in German. It would be possible to integrate these functions in a teaching programme. SLA research offers a theoretical framework to our research, as the findings provide a better understanding of the cognitive dimension of learning and the notions constitute a theoretical backing for our didactical proposals
