Abstract:
This popular writer, born in Thüringen, belongs to the XIXth century feminine literature. The success she obtains when her novels were published in serial numbers in the family periodical “Die Gartenlaude" aroused many reactions. If the readers were enthusiastic as she made dream and tried to make women's condition better, the literary critics express a more balanced opinion. Marlitt was not a very well-known even if a fex studies have been written about her. She was praised, and then despised. In 1949, the Thüringen became an eastern "land" and all evidence of her had to disappear. Her work was downgraded as "trivialliteratur". On the occasion of remembrance festivities linked to Marlitt's life, the press devoted a number of articles about this writer's image whose name has become a legend. So have her novels which, no doubt, remind of fairy tules. Cinderella, sleeping beauty, the ugly duckling, all names and titles which remind us of her as well as her heroines. Shall we keep of her the biased image given by the periodical press through expressions used to strike the readers or shall we allow her to be acknowledged as a true writer? A new attempt to assess her that began a fex years ago seems. Indeed, to obtain the opposite result. Marlitt has become a touristic cult object and her career as a writer semmes to be forgotten

The billfish are oceanic pelagic species often caught by the tuna fleet and with great interest of sport fishing. This group of fish has specific legislation prohibiting the marketing and export of two species, Kajuikia albida e Makaira nigricans, in Brazil. DNA barcode is a universal system of molecular identification based on a sequence of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of about 650 base pairs, serving as an identifying genomic mark in each species. This system has been used successfully to identify mischaracterized samples illegally marketed, like sample materials from sharks and other endangered species of organisms. The Barcode DNA technique was used to identify billfish marketed in the second largest fishing warehouse in Latin America, the CEAGESP-SP and the international airport of São Paulo, Brazil. 302 samples of billfish were collected during three inspection actions carried out by IBAMA, the executing agency of the national environmental policy. After DNA sequencing procedures it was possible to identify 72 samples (91.14%) by CEAGESP at the level of species, being 21 (29.17%) identified as Xiphias gladius, 44 (61.1%) as Istiophorus platypterus and 7 (8.33%) as Kajikia albida, this latter species determined as a market prohibited in Brazil and considered vulnerable in the list of endangered species of the IUCN and in the official list of species of endangered Fauna - Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates. At the International Airport of Guarulhos it was possible to identify 223 samples (100%), all identified as Xiphias gladius as declared by the exporter and indicated by its NCM (Mercosur Common Nomenclature). Molecular analysis has proven to be an excellent tool to identify billfish in Brazil in different centers such as Guarulhos International Airport and CEAGESP, SP. The identification of the white marlin being illegally traded in CEAGESP demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the current monitoring techniques used and emphasize the need for adopting better public policies for the conservation of the species.

Aguila-Way, Tania. ""Returning the gaze": Reappraisals of the Griersonian documentary in Livesay and Marlatt." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28076.

Abstract:
In 1969, Dorothy Livesay affirmed that, beginning in the 1930s, the Canadian long poem had evolved into a new genre by following the "experimentations" originally made by John Grierson---father of the British documentary movement and NFB film commissioner---in film ("Documentary Poem" 269). Echoing the well-known Griersonian assertion that documentary film should "interpret Canada to Canadians," Livesay also attached a special nation-building value to the Canadian documentary poem by stating that its methods and conventions "subtly [...] cast light on the landscape, the topography, the flora and the fauna as well as the social structure" of Canada (269). Prompted by Livesay's statements, and by the current lack of scholarship examining the Griersonian heritage of her documentary poetry, this thesis performs a critical examination of the points of continuity between the Griersonian tradition of nationalist filmmaking and the Canadian documentary poem as Livesay defined it. Drawing on key Canadian film policy documents of the modernist era and on close readings of seminal documentary texts by the National Film Board, I trace the ideological maneuvers and narrative practices that the Griersonian documentary traditionally deployed in order to fulfill its mandate of interpreting Canada to Canadians, foregrounding the representational gaps and disturbances underpinning these conventions. I then examine the extent to which these conventions penetrated Livesay's own documentary project, highlight the efforts she made in order to transcend the limitations of her original format. In an effort to chart the aesthetic and political ramifications of this representational struggle, in a concluding section I explore the ongoing reappraisal of the Griersonian documentary tradition in key postmodern documentaries by Livesay and another prominent Canadian documentary poet, Daphne Marlatt.

Exploracionists has great interest in turbidite systems, since these generally comprise prolific exploration plays. However, these potential reservoirs are often near or below seismic resolution. Thus, the inversion process is important to integrate the seismic data quality of the resolution obtained from its preconditioning, so that the end result has detailed characteristics of the layers. The preconditioning enables improved resolution of seismic data, through mitigation of random noise. As the final goal, the inversion was performed acoustic post stack seismic data, migrated time, to a system of turbidites in Campos Basin. The main purpose of seismic inversion is to transform the given reflection in quantitative petrophysical properties. The inversion for acoustic impedance is commonly used to predict porosity. The flow of the proposed work was divided into five main stages: pre-conditioning the seismic 3D data, well-tie correlation, construction of the model of low frequency, inversion of data and estimation of porosity. The results showed that the inverted acoustic impedance cube has much higher resolution compared to the seismic amplitude data, allowing greater visualization of geological features in the Marlim Field. Besides its limitations as ignoring the effects of changing the fluid and complex lithological variations on the relationship porosity / impedance, the method provides a reliable tool for seismic exploration. More precise details of petrophysical properties can be obtainedthrough inversion methods starting from sophisticated pre-stack data.

Woods, Derek John. "The mill-site : Victorian processing in England and "Vancouver"; from Eliot to Marlatt." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27779.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the mill-site as a discursive, literary, and physical location. The philology of “mill” sets the focus on processing, which is described as a transformative action between nature and culture, one that nonetheless contributes to the ideological purification of those categories and to the construction of the “resource” as a formless reserve for consumption. The histories of power technologies (like mills) and their integration with ecologic and economic systems participate in determining the kind of relationship manifest between nature and culture. Noting the extension of the literal and figurative senses of “mill” to the processing of language, I also propose a notion of transcursivity to signal the transformation of language and symbolic additions to the activity of the mill-site. Chapter Two focuses on a reading of George Eliot’s novel The Mill on the Floss (1860), supplemented by an analysis of processing in Herman Melville’s story The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids (1855) and Charles Dickens’ article “A Paper-Mill” (1850). I argue for the importance of mill and setting to Eliot’s novel, finding the mill to be an active force in the plot at several junctures; The Mill on the Floss, through its engagement with the relation between different economies and the relation of economy to ecology, can be considered a central text for the study of such themes in Victorian literature. Close analysis of the language of processing itself points to the importance of medial substances like fibre and grain to the construction of materials as “resources.” Chapter Three describes the Hastings Mill, located in various historiographies as the Victorian “origin” of the City of Vancouver. Through exploration of archival and published historical texts, I describe that mill’s originary intervention as a break in the system that alters the region’s economic/ecologic history. Daphne Marlatt’s novel Ana Historic (1988) depicts this historical origin and seeks to problematize its common narrative by reimagining ignored women’s histories and by queering the significance of this colonial mill-site. Marlatt elucidates problems of historical interpretation associated with the mill’s form of biopower, and its influence on relation of nature to culture.

Cook, Nicholas. "Gender role conflict and alcohol metacognitions : implications for the Marlatt Model of Relapse Prevention." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2016. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/1102/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The Marlatt model of alcohol treatment (Marlatt & Gordon, 1986) is widespread. A key component of that model is alcohol expectancies. Alcohol expectancies refer to the effects of alcohol use anticipated by individuals. Metacognitive beliefs about alcohol are considered to be a specific form of alcohol expectancy (Spada, Moneta, & Wells). The present study argues that development of a triphasic metacognitive formulation for problematic drinking (Spada, Caselli, & Wells, 2012) represents the single most important advance in alcohol treatment since the advent of the Marlatt model. The formulation postulates that a reduction in positive and negative alcohol metacognitive beliefs leads to a reduction in alcohol use. A crucial element of the metacognitive formulation is attention allocation (Steele & Josephs, 1990). Internally generated conflict, such as gender role conflict (O’Neil, 1981), it is hypothesised, can disrupt attention allocation thereby reducing efficacy of metacognitive treatment. Method: A clinical sample of 102 (male, 74; female, 28) completed the Positive Alcohol Metacognitions Scale (PAM), Negative Alcohol Metacognitions Scale (NAM), Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Results: Regression analysis indicated that gender role conflict moderated the relationship between positive alcohol metacognitions and alcohol use in men but not in women. Similar results were obtained for the GRCS subscale ‘Restricted Emotionality’. Conclusions: Findings have implications for gender sensitive interventions in both the Marlatt model generally and metacognitive therapy specifically.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the work of two contemporary women poets, one American, the other Canadian, looking particularly at questions of subjectivity and embodiment in relation to place and to history. Their work is considered in the contexts of American modernist poetry, for instance that of Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams and Charles Olson, and in the light of critical theorists such as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Luce Irigaray and Helene Cixous. Modernist concerns with the materiality of the text, both as product of a capitalist economy and as visual object, are considered alongside postmodern aspects of language as processional and reflexive. The early work of each writer is discussed separately in Chapters One and Two, with selected later work in more direct comparison in Chapters Three and Four.

Full text
Abstract:
Blue marlin Makaira nigricans and white marlin Kajikia albida (formerly Tetrapturus albidus) are overfished in the Atlantic Ocean, with the vast majority of fishing mortality resulting from the pelagic longline fishery that targets tunas (Thunnus spp.) and swordfish Xiphias gladius. Time series of catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data have been fundamental to assessments of blue marlin and white marlin stocks, but these time series have been affected by a shift over time in pelagic longline fishing practices from shallow to deeper sets. One method for adjusting CPUE data for changes in fishing practices is a habitat-based standardization that modifies fishing effort in proportion to the vertical distribution of the species of interest and the fishing gear. For these models to be successfully applied to population assessments, the vertical habitat utilized by blue marlin and white marlin must be known. Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) provide a means of collecting high resolution vertical movement and distribution data for billfishes. In my study, 62 blue marlin and 40 white marlin were caught in recreational fisheries off the U.S. mid-Atlantic, Yucatan Peninsula, northern Caribbean, Venezuela, and Brazil, tagged with Microwave Telemetry, Inc. PTT-100 HR PSATs, and released. Data were recovered from PSATs attached to 57 surviving blue marlin and 36 surviving white marlin. PSATs successfully transmitted 18-100% of the data they recorded (mean 72%). The minimum 10-day displacements of both species averaged 242 km (range 9 to 942 km) and varied significantly between tagging locations, but not between species. Blue marlin spent a significantly higher (62%) amount of time in the upper 10 m of water than white marlin (56%). Both species spent greater than 95% of the time in water that was within 8o C of the sea surface temperature. Only 3.1% of white marlin demonstrated diel differences in the maximum depth of dives, while 29% of blue marlin dove into deeper waters during the day. Variables identified as explaining the most variation in dives were total dive duration, bottom time, ascent time, number of wiggles, wiggle depth, interdive interval, skew of ascent and descent, % time ascending, and % time descending. Using these variables, two dive types were identified through cluster analysis: simple dives representing traditional "U" and "V" shapes, and complex dives with multiple descents, plateaus, and wiggles. There were significant differences in dive variables among locations, individuals, diel periods, and dive types. There was significant overlap in range, habitat use, and vertical movement patterns, and therefore no strong evidence of niche partitioning between blue marlin and white marlin. My analyses can be used to further define the physical and physiological factors limiting marlins' vertical movements and therefore improve stock assessments based on longline CPUE data by correcting for changes in fishing practices.

Abstract:
The study aimed at providing scientific answers to two questions namely what the nature and extent of communication apprehension are among HED-students and whether the students’ level of communication apprehension changes during the course of their professional training. In order to answer these questions, communication, as typically human behavior, was studied and contextualised to the school classroom situation. Relationships between communication, classroom communication and teaching were indicated. The conclusion was reached that a very close relationship exists between communication and teaching. In fact, teaching was found to be a particular kind of communication which is qualified by the aim of enabling the learner(s) to perform certain learning tasks. Communication apprehension not only influences communication, but also teaching negatively. This negative relationship was researched further by studying the causes and effects of communication apprehension. The detrimental effects that high levels of communication apprehension (of both learners and teachers) have on the teaching learning situation were given particular attention and suggestions were offered for preventing and/or surmounting communication apprehension in the classroom. The empirical investigation entailed the completion of the PRCA (Personal Report on Communication Apprehension) by all fourth year HED-students studying at the PU for CHE between 1990 and 1994. This investigation led to the following findings: • 15,4% of the students experienced high levels of communication apprehension; • during the first measurements students from HED (Secondary)-diploma course manifested the highest level of communication apprehension (54,1%) and students from the post-graduate HED course who specialised in the Human Sciences the lowest (49,7%); • during the course of the professional training a reduction in the level of general communication apprehension was noticeable but of no practical significance: when placed in a teaching situation, students initially experienced relatively high levels of communication apprehension, which, however, decreased to such an extent during their training, that the decrease was of practical significance. The role of micro- and practical teaching played in decreasing communication apprehension should not be underestimated. Research dealing with communication apprehension should be broadened to include students training to become primary school teachers. Communication apprehension should also be investigated within a multicultural context. The causes of high levels of communication apprehension should be examined further and programmes which should be developed.

Abstract:
This work deals with the question of the representation of feminine identity in the works of Joanna Russ, Ursula Le Guin, Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood and Daphne Marlatt. This topic is based on a philosophical questioning about gender. The literary utopias and dystopias published in the United States in the 1970's provided new narrative possibilities for feminine representation. Since that time, due to the strategies of resistance elaborated in the texts, a wide scope of definitions of the feminine has emerged, thus conveying the notion of a "plural feminine". The narratives are analyzed from a theoretical and cross-disciplinary perspective which enhances its polyphonic aspect. The analysis of the construction of feminine identity stems from other related questions linked to gender, identity, symbolic order, and History. The thematic and structural diversity observed here constitute a field of investigation characterized by symbolically dense language. This thesis analyses and emphasizes discursive modes which testify to a poetic, aesthetic and ethical vision of the feminine "will to act". Such a vision intends to subversively decenter established codes and consequently to question a supposedly immutable binary logic

Abstract:
The istiophorid billfishes (marlins, spearfishes, and sailfish) are highly migratory pelagic fishes exhibiting broad and continuous spatial distributions in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. These species are targeted by a number of recreational, commercial, artisanal, and subsistence fisheries worldwide, and are also caught as bycatch in pelagic longline fisheries targeting tunas and swordfish. Though stock assessments have not been conducted for all istiophorids, assessments available for some species indicate that many istiophorid stocks are overfished and/or experiencing overfishing. However, the development of stock-specific recovery efforts is often impeded by a lack of information on basic species biology, including stock structure. The species status of some istiophorids is also uncertain, further complicating management efforts as well as strategies to conserve genetic diversity characteristic of distinct evolutionary lineages. In this dissertation, a molecular approach is used to address questions currently contributing uncertainty to the conservation and management of two istiophorid billfishes, white marlin (Kajikia albida) and striped marlin (K. audax). These closely related sister species are distributed in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans, respectively. Previous assessment of genetic population structure for white marlin based on mitochondrial (mt) DNA and five nuclear microsatellite markers suggested the possibility of population structuring for this species; however, results from the evaluation of mtDNA and 24 microsatellites across a larger number of samples, including a collection of larvae, are consistent with the presence of a single genetic stock (Chapter II). This result highlights the importance of analyses based on large numbers of molecular markers and samples, as well as a biologically informed sampling design, for studies of population structure in highly migratory pelagic species. Compared to the apparent lack of genetic population structure for white marlin, analysis of nearly 4,000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) molecular markers across collections of striped marlin from the Pacific and, for the first time, Indian oceans resolved multiple genetically distinct populations (Chapter III). These populations correspond with striped marlin sampled from the western Indian Ocean, Oceania, North Pacific Ocean, and eastern central Pacific Ocean. Results from individual-based cluster analyses also suggest the presence of a second genetically distinct population in the North Pacific Ocean. Comparisons of replicate sample collections for some regions demonstrate the stability of allele frequencies across multiple generations. Finally, the uncertain species status of striped marlin and white marlin was evaluated using over 12,000 genome-wide SNPs surveyed across large numbers of exemplars per species (white marlin: n = 75, striped marlin: n = 250; Chapter IV). Results from individual-based cluster and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses suggest the presence of distinct evolutionary lineages for striped marlin and white marlin. This result is consistent with levels of genetic differentiation between striped marlin and white marlin which are an order of magnitude higher than those calculated between populations of striped marlin. Collectively, results of this dissertation provide practical insights for improving the conservation and management of white marlin and striped marlin, including revised stock structures which should be recognized in assessment and management plans for striped marlin. Future genomic studies should focus on addressing uncertainties regarding rangewide stock structure and species relationships for other istiophorids. Additionally, studies which continue to improve the genomic resources available for istiophorid billfishes and other large pelagic fishes may ultimately facilitate the evaluation of questions previously unexplored for the pelagic marine environment, such as localized adaptation and speciation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
3D printing has risen in popularity due to its capabilities which enable rapid prototyping and printing structures that were impossible to produce before and partially because of technological development in recent years. Most low-cost printers, based on the fused filament fabrication process, are capable of printing a single filament at a time that limits and complicates multicolor and multi-material 3D printing. Therefore, investigating and building a multicolor 3D printer have been chosen as a degree project in order to provide an understanding for multicolor 3D printing. The project was started with an investigation of different possibilities and potential solutions. After that, a visual CAD model was created in Solid Edge, and a virtual model was constructed by using Acumen. Lastly, accumulated ideas were implemented into creating a prototype. Construction of the prototype was accomplished successfully, and several experiments were executed to determine its capabilities and limitations. The results showed that the printer has high precision in XY-plane and is less precise in Z-axis. The printer was able to print 45 different colored objects, of which only 24 were chosen as distinct colors that the human eye could distinguish. One of the main challenges with a single nozzle multicolor 3D printing compared to a single-color printing is constant heatsink clogging. Another challenge is to create a well-integrated system where hardware and software comply perfectly in a manner that desired prints are obtained.

Abstract: In this work kinetic models are obtained for the Marlim vacuum residua (VR) hydroconversion. This is a joint work with PETROBRAS SA. First, several hydroconversion experiments were held on a stirred batch reactor, the feedstock being Marlim VR mixed with FCC decant oil in a 80/20% weight basis. Several temperatures and oil/catalyst ratios were used (catalyst is a commercial NiMo in yalumina) at different times (O to 4h), at a 110 bar pressure, being kept hydrogen t1ux. The collected product was analysed at PETROBRAS Research Center 1'acilities (CENPES), being obtained hydrodemetalization (HDM) convcrsion 01' up to 100% (vanadium), hydrodesulfurization (HOS) of up to 90% and hydrocracking (HCC) convcrsion up to 70%. Feedstock and products were separatcd in pseudocompounds 01' intcrest in refining industry (VR, gasoil, diesel oil, naphtha and gas). Several HOM, HOS and HCC kinetics were proposed, involving thermal and catalytic contributions. The resulting models consisted of systcms 01' di1'fcrential equations, which were solved along the time taking into account the experimental temperature profile. The Chi-squarc and Box and Oraper criteria objective 1'unctions were minimised to adjust modcl paramctcrs. The usual optimisation methods (gradientless Nelder & Mead Simplex, and gradicnt local minimisation Newton-kind methods) werc not c1'fcctive , duc to thc cxistencc 01' many local minima. A si11lulated annealing continuous minimisation method showed to be effective. A new more cffective hybrid proposed method was developed, applying a Newton-like method between certain si11lulated annealing steps. Several modcls wcre tested, allowing to unscramblc thermal and catalytic e1'fects in the developed kinetics, allowing them to be applied to different catalyst conccntration reactor hydrodynamic models (likc expandcd or bubble-column rcactors)

CAPES
O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as capturas, a distribuição e a abundância relativa do agulhão branco (Tetrapturus albidus) no oceano Atlântico.
