Abstract:
Various pelagic fisheries in the US Western Pacific islands capture blue and striped marlins. Total catches by US vessels in the Western Pacific islands amount to about 2000 t for blue marlin and 600 t for striped marlin, or 9% and 5% of the nominal total Pacific-wide catch of these two species, respectively. Catch records for domestic Western Pacific fisheries typically extend over several decades, although in this short communication they are confined to blue and striped marlin catches in the 1990s. There are currently no specific management measures for marlins in the US Western Pacific islands, but other management measures for US pelagic fisheries in this region may have an influence on marlin catches.

Abstract:
Marlin is the event processing framework of the iLCSoft [1] ecosystem. Originally developed for the ILC more than 15 years ago, it is now widely used also by other communities, such as CLICdp, CEPC and many test beam projects such as CALICE, LCTPC and EU-Telescope. While Marlin is lightweight and flexible it was originally designed for sequential processing only. With MarlinMT we have now evolved Marlin for parallel processing of events on multi-core architectures based on multi-threading. We report on the necessary developments and issues encountered, within Marlin as well as with the underlying LCIO [4] event data model (EDM). A focus will be put on the new parallel event processing (PEP) scheduler. We conclude with first performance estimates, like the application speedup and a discussion on histogram handling in parallel applications.

Abstract:
Mean length of caught fish often declines noticeably with increased fishing mortality and this trend is regarded as an indicator of excessive fishing mortality. The most recent stock assessment results for Atlantic blue marlins and Atlantic white marlins indicate that these stocks are heavily overfished. However, available data do not suggest a strong trend of decreasing lengths of marlins in the catch. The lack of such a trend has been used to argue that the assessment results are in error. This study uses population simulation to characterize the expected response of the size distribution of blue marlin to the vector of fishing mortality and FMSY estimated for the base case in the most recent stock assessment, and contrasts the results with a similar analysis for Atlantic swordfish. The results indicate that blue marlin should not be expected to exhibit strong trends in mean length with respect to fishing mortality within the range of fishing mortality estimated in the most recent stock assessment, and that the trends in the observed size composition are consistent with the findings of the stock assessment. The findings indicate that declining mean length is not a necessary outcome of excessive fishing mortality in all species.

Full text
Abstract:
Istiophorid billfishes are highly migratory species that inhabit the tropical and subtropical, epipelagic waters of the world's oceans, a large, relatively homogeneous environment that lacks significant physical barriers. Based on these observations alone, one would not expect marlins, sailfish and spearfishes to exhibit substantial stock structure. This assumption has been evaluated with a variety of techniques, including analyses of morphological characters, adult distribution, tag and recapture data, the spatial and temporal distribution of spawning and, recently, molecular genetic characters. This paper focuses on inferences of istiophorid billfish stock structure derived from investigation of several different classes of molecular markers, and reviews our current understanding of the genetic basis of stock structure of striped marlin, white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish and black marlin. Significant genetic differences exist between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific populations of blue marlin and sailfish, and the presence of distinct mitochondrial DNA lineages suggests that ocean populations were isolated in the past. However, the occurrence of identical genotypes in both oceans is evidence of recent genetic contact. The genetic data do not support recognition of separate Atlantic and Indo-Pacific species of blue marlin or sailfish. White and striped marlin are separated by about the same level of genetic divergence as Atlantic and Indo-Pacific populations of blue marlin and sailfish, but preliminary analysis of the mitochondrial DNA control region suggests that, unlike Atlantic and Indo-Pacific populations of blue marlin and sailfish, white marlin and striped marlin represent independent evolutionary units. If white and striped marlin are valid species, they are of very recent origin. Significant intraspecific genetic heterogeneity was found among collections of striped marlin and sailfish within the Indo-Pacific; both species exhibited a clear spatial partitioning of genetic variation among geographically distant collection locations. There was no genetic evidence for within-ocean population structuring for other istiophorids examined. Inferences of billfish stock structure derived from studies of molecular markers complement those obtained using other methods of analysis, and together these studies demonstrate substantial differences in the level of population structuring among istiophorid billfishes, information critical for effective management of these highly migratory species.

Abstract:
Australia has a relatively long history with respect to management of fishery interactions with marlins. Sectoral conflict has been, and remains, the main driver of management action. Whilst constrained by verified catch and effort data from both recreational and commercial sectors, a range of management actions including limited entry, non-retention, non-targeting, closed areas and gear restrictions are reviewed. The review of management performance shows that the effectiveness of management actions varies considerably. Some measures such as voluntary non-retention policies have had little impact, whereas others such as closed areas have had a marked impact on fishery interactions and sectoral conflict. Relatively small areaclosures reduced the interactions of Japanese longliners with black marlin by 85%. On a per unit-of-effort basis marlinsare currently afforded greater protection than ever from overfishing; however, effort from all sectors continues to increase and sectoral conflict with respect to marlins is expected to continue to result in calls for further management action.

Abstract:
This popular writer, born in Thüringen, belongs to the XIXth century feminine literature. The success she obtains when her novels were published in serial numbers in the family periodical “Die Gartenlaude" aroused many reactions. If the readers were enthusiastic as she made dream and tried to make women's condition better, the literary critics express a more balanced opinion. Marlitt was not a very well-known even if a fex studies have been written about her. She was praised, and then despised. In 1949, the Thüringen became an eastern "land" and all evidence of her had to disappear. Her work was downgraded as "trivialliteratur". On the occasion of remembrance festivities linked to Marlitt's life, the press devoted a number of articles about this writer's image whose name has become a legend. So have her novels which, no doubt, remind of fairy tules. Cinderella, sleeping beauty, the ugly duckling, all names and titles which remind us of her as well as her heroines. Shall we keep of her the biased image given by the periodical press through expressions used to strike the readers or shall we allow her to be acknowledged as a true writer? A new attempt to assess her that began a fex years ago seems. Indeed, to obtain the opposite result. Marlitt has become a touristic cult object and her career as a writer semmes to be forgotten

The billfish are oceanic pelagic species often caught by the tuna fleet and with great interest of sport fishing. This group of fish has specific legislation prohibiting the marketing and export of two species, Kajuikia albida e Makaira nigricans, in Brazil. DNA barcode is a universal system of molecular identification based on a sequence of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of about 650 base pairs, serving as an identifying genomic mark in each species. This system has been used successfully to identify mischaracterized samples illegally marketed, like sample materials from sharks and other endangered species of organisms. The Barcode DNA technique was used to identify billfish marketed in the second largest fishing warehouse in Latin America, the CEAGESP-SP and the international airport of São Paulo, Brazil. 302 samples of billfish were collected during three inspection actions carried out by IBAMA, the executing agency of the national environmental policy. After DNA sequencing procedures it was possible to identify 72 samples (91.14%) by CEAGESP at the level of species, being 21 (29.17%) identified as Xiphias gladius, 44 (61.1%) as Istiophorus platypterus and 7 (8.33%) as Kajikia albida, this latter species determined as a market prohibited in Brazil and considered vulnerable in the list of endangered species of the IUCN and in the official list of species of endangered Fauna - Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates. At the International Airport of Guarulhos it was possible to identify 223 samples (100%), all identified as Xiphias gladius as declared by the exporter and indicated by its NCM (Mercosur Common Nomenclature). Molecular analysis has proven to be an excellent tool to identify billfish in Brazil in different centers such as Guarulhos International Airport and CEAGESP, SP. The identification of the white marlin being illegally traded in CEAGESP demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the current monitoring techniques used and emphasize the need for adopting better public policies for the conservation of the species.

Aguila-Way, Tania. ""Returning the gaze": Reappraisals of the Griersonian documentary in Livesay and Marlatt." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28076.

Abstract:
In 1969, Dorothy Livesay affirmed that, beginning in the 1930s, the Canadian long poem had evolved into a new genre by following the "experimentations" originally made by John Grierson---father of the British documentary movement and NFB film commissioner---in film ("Documentary Poem" 269). Echoing the well-known Griersonian assertion that documentary film should "interpret Canada to Canadians," Livesay also attached a special nation-building value to the Canadian documentary poem by stating that its methods and conventions "subtly [...] cast light on the landscape, the topography, the flora and the fauna as well as the social structure" of Canada (269). Prompted by Livesay's statements, and by the current lack of scholarship examining the Griersonian heritage of her documentary poetry, this thesis performs a critical examination of the points of continuity between the Griersonian tradition of nationalist filmmaking and the Canadian documentary poem as Livesay defined it. Drawing on key Canadian film policy documents of the modernist era and on close readings of seminal documentary texts by the National Film Board, I trace the ideological maneuvers and narrative practices that the Griersonian documentary traditionally deployed in order to fulfill its mandate of interpreting Canada to Canadians, foregrounding the representational gaps and disturbances underpinning these conventions. I then examine the extent to which these conventions penetrated Livesay's own documentary project, highlight the efforts she made in order to transcend the limitations of her original format. In an effort to chart the aesthetic and political ramifications of this representational struggle, in a concluding section I explore the ongoing reappraisal of the Griersonian documentary tradition in key postmodern documentaries by Livesay and another prominent Canadian documentary poet, Daphne Marlatt.

Abstract:
Exploracionists has great interest in turbidite systems, since these generally comprise prolific exploration plays. However, these potential reservoirs are often near or below seismic resolution. Thus, the inversion process is important to integrate the seismic data quality of the resolution obtained from its preconditioning, so that the end result has detailed characteristics of the layers. The preconditioning enables improved resolution of seismic data, through mitigation of random noise. As the final goal, the inversion was performed acoustic post stack seismic data, migrated time, to a system of turbidites in Campos Basin. The main purpose of seismic inversion is to transform the given reflection in quantitative petrophysical properties. The inversion for acoustic impedance is commonly used to predict porosity. The flow of the proposed work was divided into five main stages: pre-conditioning the seismic 3D data, well-tie correlation, construction of the model of low frequency, inversion of data and estimation of porosity. The results showed that the inverted acoustic impedance cube has much higher resolution compared to the seismic amplitude data, allowing greater visualization of geological features in the Marlim Field. Besides its limitations as ignoring the effects of changing the fluid and complex lithological variations on the relationship porosity / impedance, the method provides a reliable tool for seismic exploration. More precise details of petrophysical properties can be obtainedthrough inversion methods starting from sophisticated pre-stack data.
