Abstract:
This bachelor's thesis in applied mathematics & industrial economics is an attempt to model drives in American football using Markov chains. The transition matrix is obtained through logit regression analysis on historical data from the NFL. Different outcomes of drives are modelled as separate absorbing states in the Markov chain. Absorption probabilities are calculated representing the probabilities of each outcome. Results are tested against a Markov chain with the transition matrix based on frequency analysis. Three scoring rules unanimously declare the regression based model to be superior. The application of the model pertains to live sports betting. With the insight provided by the Markovian model, a bettor should be able to make statistically informed betting decisions. The prospect of creating a start-up based on the Markovian betting model is discussed.

Grave, Edouard. "A Markovian approach to distributional semantics." Phd thesis, Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris VI, 2014. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00940575.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis, which is organized in two independent parts, presents work on distributional semantics and on variable selection. In the first part, we introduce a new method for learning good word representations using large quantities of unlabeled sentences. The method is based on a probabilistic model of sentence, using a hidden Markov model and a syntactic dependency tree. The latent variables, which correspond to the nodes of the dependency tree, aim at capturing the meanings of the words. We develop an efficient algorithm to perform inference and learning in those models, based on online EM and approximate message passing. We then evaluate our models on intrinsic tasks such as predicting human similarity judgements or word categorization, and on two extrinsic tasks: named entity recognition and supersense tagging. In the second part, we introduce, in the context of linear models, a new penalty function to perform variable selection in the case of highly correlated predictors. This penalty, called the trace Lasso, uses the trace norm of the selected predictors, which is a convex surrogate of their rank, as the criterion of model complexity. The trace Lasso interpolates between the $\ell_1$-norm and $\ell_2$-norm. In particular, it is equal to the $\ell_1$-norm if all predictors are orthogonal and to the $\ell_2$-norm if all predictors are equal. We propose two algorithms to compute the solution of least-squares regression regularized by the trace Lasso, and perform experiments on synthetic datasets to illustrate the behavior of the trace Lasso.

Keisling, John Davis 1969. "Approach to equilibrium for Markovian infinite particle systems with exclusion interaction." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282248.

Full text
Abstract:
The N-exclusion process is an interacting particle system that generalizes the simple exclusion process by allowing up to N particles at each site. In this work, we define the jump rates to be 1 if any particles are present and 0 if not, and we consider the infinite-volume limit of this process in arbitrary dimension. Assuming symmetry and translation invariance of the underlying Markov chain, we show that the extremal translation-invariant stationary measures are product measures, one for each given "density" of particles. With the further assumption of irreducibility, we generalize a coupling argument of Liggett to show that every translation-invariant measure converges to a mixture of these product measures.

Full text
Abstract:
In an electricity price forecast model the influence from connected external electricity markets affects the supply. In order to predict electricity prices in a supply and demand model one can increase the accuracy by predicting the import or export from the connected markets if the connected market models are not price optimized towards each other. There is a limit for the maximum transfer capacity of electricity between the markets and the capacity is changing in time. This thesis investigates methods of predicting the influence from connected markets by using cross validation. A multiple linear regression model is compared with varieties of the Tobit model, a model that accounts for limited or censored variables. An extension is made using Markov regime shifting models in order to evaluate if this can capture more dynamics and increase the predictive power. The result shows that a special case of the Tobit model that accounts for a time varying limit increases the accuracy of the prediction compared to the other models. The Markov regime shifting models add a greater level of complexity to the prediction, but can increase the predictive power in some cases.

Full text
Abstract:
In this PHD thesis, I address the study of the evolution of quantum correlations of continuous variable systems interacting with classical environments, portrayed by classical stochastic fields. In particular, the first goal is individuating the working regimes where a full quantum description of the system-environment interaction may be simulated with a stochastic approach. As a paradigmatic example, I consider quantum harmonic oscillators subject to phase diffusion and dissipation decoherence. My results show that the stochastic noise may take over the full quantum description of Markovian dephasing channels, while a stochastic approach to dissipation only works at a high temperature in the early stage of the dynamics. The second goal consists in better exploring the connection between the dynamics of correlations of the system, non-Markovianity and backflow of information. In many situations non-Markovianity cannot be proved but only revealed by means of appropriate witnesses, usually associated to backflow of information. My results show that stochastic phase diffusing and stochastic dissipative environments lead to non-Markovian dynamics, but their non-Markovianity stays unwitnessed unless revivals of correlations as nonclassicality, entanglement or discord are detected. This suggests that non-Markovianity sets the natural framework for revivals of correlations, but the true resource to obtain revivals is the backflow of information. The third goal consists in showing that effects of local or global noise on a bipartite system may easily be distinguished by means of standard laboratory techniques. Indeed, my results show that homodyne-detection-based schemes may discriminate the effects of a global stochastic noise affecting two probes from local perturbation, using as states of the probe “lab-friendly” states.

Abstract:
This chapter presents some theoretical tools for defining random graph ensembles systematically via soft or hard topological constraints including working through some properties of the Erdös-Rényi random graph ensemble, which is the simplest non-trivial random graph ensemble where links appear between two nodes with a fixed probability p. The chapter sets out the central representation of graph generation as the result of a discrete-time Markovian stochastic process. This unites the two flavours of graph generation approaches – because they can be viewed as simply moving forwards or backwards through this representation. It is possible to define a random graph by an algorithm, and then calculate the associated stationary probability. The alternative approach is to specify sampling weights and then to construct an algorithm that will have these weights as the stationary probabilities upon convergence.

Abstract:
The gradient approximations of the Kadanoff and Baym equations are derived up to first order. The off-shell motions responsible for the satellites are shown to ensure causality. The cancellation of off-shell motions from the drift and correlation part of the reduced density provides a precursor of the kinetic equation for the quasiparticle distribution which leads to a functional between reduced and quasiparticle distribution, named the extended quasiparticle picture. Virial corrections appear as internal gradients in the selfenergy and therefore in the considered processes. With this extended quasiparticle picture, the non-Markovian kinetic equations are transformed into Markovian ones for proper defined quasiparticles without neglect showing the exact cancellation of off-shell parts. Alternative approaches are discussed for comparison.

Abstract:
Abstract Processes at the nanoscale happen far away from the thermodynamic limit, far from equilibrium and are dominated by fluctuations and, perhaps, even quantum effects. This book establishes a consistent thermodynamic framework for such processes by combining tools from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and the theory of open quantum systems. The book is accessible for graduate students and of interest to all researchers striving for a deeper understanding of the laws of thermodynamics beyond their traditional realm of applicability. It puts most emphasis on the microscopic derivation and understanding of key principles and concepts as well as their interrelation. The topics covered in this book include (quantum) stochastic processes, (quantum) master equations, local detailed balance, classical stochastic thermodynamics, (quantum) fluctuation theorems, strong coupling and non non-Markovian effects, thermodynamic uncertainty relations, operational approaches, Maxwell's demon and time-reversal symmetry, among other topics. Furthermore, the book treats a few applications in detail to illustrate the general theory and its potential for practical applications. These are single-molecule pulling experiments, quantum transport and thermoelectric effects in quantum dots, the micromaser and related set-ups in quantum optics.
