Abstract:
The Papua New Guinea (PNG) species of the water beetle genus Hydraena Kugelann, 1794, are revised, based on the study of 7,411 databased specimens. The two previously named species are redescribed, and 130 new species are described. The species are placed in 32 species groups. High resolution digital images of all primary types are presented (online version in color), scanning electron micrographs of representative species are given, and geographic distributions are mapped. Male genitalia, representative female terminal abdominal segments and representative spermathecae are illustrated. Papua New Guinea Hydraena species are typically found in sandy/gravelly stream margins, often in association with streamside litter; some species are primarily pond or swamp dwelling, and a few species are usually found in the hygropetric splash zone on stream boulders or on rocks at the margins of waterfalls. The geographic distributions of PNG Hydraena are compared with the Areas of Freshwater Endemism recently proposed by Polhemus and Allen (2007), and found to substantially support those areas. Only one species, H. impercepta Zwick, 1977 is known to be found in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. The probable Australian origins of the PNG hydraenid genera Gymnochthebius and Limnebius are discussed. The origins of just a few species of PNG Hydraena appear to clearly be Australia, and of comparatively recent origin, whereas the origins of the remainder remain problematic because of lack of knowledge of the Hydraena fauna in Papua Province, Indonesia, and islands large and small to the west of New Guinea. No endemic genera of Hydraenidae are currently known for New Guinea, whereas 98% of the known species are endemic. Abstract:
Abstract The Reelfoot Lake basin, Tennessee, is structurally complex and of great interest seismologically because it is located at the junction of two seismicity trends of the New Madrid seismic zone. To better understand the structure at this location, a 7.5-km-long seismic reflection profile was acquired on roads along the southern margin of Reelfoot Lake. The seismic line reveals a westerly dipping basin bounded on the west by the Reelfoot reverse fault zone, the Ridgely right-lateral transpressive fault zone on the east, and the Cottonwood Grove right-lateral strike-slip fault in the middle of the basin. The displacement history of the Reelfoot fault zone appears to be the same as the Ridgely fault zone, thus suggesting that movement on these fault zones has been synchronous, perhaps since the Cretaceous. Since the Reelfoot and Ridgely fault systems are believed responsible for two of the main-shocks of 1811-1812, the fault history revealed in the Reelfoot Lake profile suggests that multiple mainshocks may be typical of the New Madrid seismic zone. The Ridgely fault zone consists of two northeast-striking faults that lie at the base of and within the Mississippi Valley bluff line. This fault zone has 15 m of post-Eocene, up-to-the-east displacement and appears to locally control the eastern limit of Mississippi River migration. The Cottonwood Grove fault zone passes through the center of the seismic line and has approximately 5 m of up-to-the-east displacement. Correlation of the Cottonwood Grove fault with a possible fault scarp on the floor of Reelfoot Lake and the New Markham fault north of the lake suggests the Cottonwood Grove fault may change to a northerly strike at Reelfoot Lake, thereby linking the northeast-trending zones of seismicity in the New Madrid seismic zone.

Abstract:
The main aims of this work are to establish the status of the Austronesian languages of the Markham Valley and its hinterland and of the upper Ramu Valley in Papua New Guinea, in relation to other languages of the Oceanic group, and to de11neate their sub-groupings. Descriptions of the phonolog1es and morphosyntactic systems are provided as the basis for the comparative analysis. A reconstruction of the history of these languages is attempted, using the available linguistic, historical, social and geographical information. The comparat1ve method is used to investigate the reJationships between these languages. The material for the study consists of phonological, rnorphosyntactic and lexico-semantic data collected by the writer 1n the f1eld. Sociolinguistic, cultural and oral historical information was also co 1 lected and used as supplementary evidence. Chapter 1 introduces the topics for investigation and outlines the conventions used in the thesis. In Chapter 2 are presented some theoretical considerations, a review of previous work on Markham languages, and an outllne of the methodology used fn data collection and analysis. Chapter 3 presents the Markham language communit1es in their geographical and social context. The social background of the societies is given in some detail because the languages and their history cannot be considered apart from this social context. The main 1inguistic data upon which this work is based is presented in Chapter 4 Phonology, and Chapter 5 Morphosyntax. In Chapter 4 are brief phonological sketches of each of the Markham languages. After a discussion of previous reconstructions of Proto Oceanic and Proto Huon Gulf, a reconstruction of the phonology of Proto Markham is outlined, and supporting evidence for the reconstructions is given. Chapter 5 consists of analyses, comparisons and reconstructions of aspects of the Markham languages' morphosyntax. In Chapter 6 the comparisons and contrasts presented in the previous two chapters are drawn together, and the evidence for the internal unity and genetic relat1onsh1p of the Markham languages is given in detail. Hypotheses about the sub-grouping of the languages are outlined, and evidence supporting these hypotheses is presented. Chapter 7 concludes the study with a summary of the findings. The evidence supports the proposition that the Markham languages form an internally consistent, genetically related unit which is descended from Proto Oceanic, through Proto Huon Gulf. It consists of three groups - Upper Markham, Watut and Lower Markham, of which the Upper Markham and Lower Markham groups are further divided into several sub-groupings. The history of the Markham 1anguages is out1ined, and evidence supporting this scenario is provided from linguistics, from oral histories, cultural data and geographical sources.
