Abstract:
This study analyzed the thematic structures of Wordsworth’s “Daffodils” and its Chinese version by Fei Bai to compare the theme distributions and their markedness in the original and Chinese versions of the poem. Results showed that the number of simple themes in the translated version was significantly higher than in Wordsworth’s original version. Conversely, Wordsworth’s version had more marked themes than Fei Bai’s version. This study then explored potential reasons for the different thematic structures in the two versions. The percentage of simple themes in Fei Bai’s version was higher than that in the original version because Chinese does not have a clausal theme, so translators would more frequently use simple themes. Additionally, Wordsworth’s original version reflected a higher percentage of marked themes than Fei Bai’s Chinese version because native English writers prefer to use juxtaposed phrases and clauses. These results provide theoretical insights on employing the linguistic perspective to compare English poems and their Chinese translations.

Abstract:
This research aimed at finding the types of themes and elements of theme used in multiple themes on the covid-19 vaccine news item. This research used the descriptive method. The data were news items that discuss the covid-19 vaccine online news on nbcnews.com in January to May 2021. The researcher found four types of themes in news items. They are simple unmarked theme, simple marked theme, multiple unmarked theme, and multiple marked theme. Meanwhile, the element of theme used in multiple theme are conjunction, conjunctive, continuative, wh-relative, finite, modal adjunct, and wh-question. The researcher found that the most dominant type of theme used was the unmarked theme (simple unmarked theme and multiple unmarked theme). This shows that the news is delivered with clear information that focuses on the events in the news.

Abstract:
This study will analyze the translation of sentences in the text by giving consideration to the distribution of information presented in the form of Theme-Rheme relation. First we will identify Themes - Rheme in the sentences in the text and will analyze the results of the translation. The theme is information that is priori-tized in a sentence usually placed in the beginning of sentence, and Rheme is the proposed information. There are three types of Themes, namely Topical Theme, Interpersonal Theme, and Textual Theme. The object of discussion here is the Topical Themes, which are Themes relating to how the subject matter discussed in the clause or sentence is laid out. Topical themes are divided into two types: Marked Topical Theme and Un-marked Topical Theme. The analysis of Topical Themes are taken from a bilingual children's book entitled Sangkuriang from the publisher Nexx Media Inc., Bandung. Sangkuriang is one of the popular Indonesian folklore that tells of a very beautiful mother whose admirer is his own son. The text to be analyzed is part of the text that tells about the birth of Dayang Sumbi, the mother of Sangkuriang. From the result of the whole analysis, the source text consists of 10 Marked Topical Theme and Top 10 Unmarked Topical Theme. There are some Topical theme changes from the source text to the target text: a sentence with an Unmarked Topical Theme is translated into a sentence with a Marked Topical Theme, and vice versa. Based on the analysis of Topical Themes on the Source Text and Target Text it can be concluded that there are some sentences that have shifted Topical Themes. There have been some changes in information due to the shift in this Topical Theme, so it can be said that this translation is not good. At the end of the analysis is given an edit on the target text. The edit of this translation does not change the Topical Theme from the Source Text, so the sub-ject matter in each sentence of the Target text is the same as the subject matter in each sentence of the Source Text.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the thematic patterns of health awareness campaigns made during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is to scrutinize the types of themes used in such prosocial advertisements by analyzing the theme placement and the elements inside those themes. COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in 2020 due to which health organizations proceeded to spread warnings and health awareness campaigns. In these circumstances, the language of these campaigns played a significant role in delivering the message to the people. In total, 75 posts were taken from official Instagram accounts of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) between March 21st, 2020 and June 21st, 2020. In this mixed-method study, a quantitative method has been used to obtain the ratio of unmarked and marked themes present in the data, which are further analysed qualitatively with Halliday’s (1994) theme-rheme model. We found that the majority of the clauses use unmarked themes, while marked themes are not as frequent. Through the preference of simple Theme over multiple Theme, complex language structure (clause-complex) has been avoided. This shows the awareness of respective organizations regarding the critical role language plays in influencing the audience, especially during a global health crisis.

Abstract:
This paper centers on the employment of Theme-related theories to analyze how academic abstracts unfold coherently in English and Chinese versions. By quantitatively exploring the distribution of these theories and ways they are progressed, the findings show that the two versions adopt simple Themes and multiple Themes in a completely opposite way, and their progressive patterns also differentiate with each other significantly. However, they seem to keep a similar trend of developing unmarked and marked Themes through the two versions of the abstract.

Full text
Abstract:
The theses focus on the market failure induced by information imperfection. We study this type of market failure separately in the context of corporate equity finance and long-term bilateral transactions. In the equity finance market, adverse selection may arise due to the asymmetric information of firms’ value. It has been argued that firms, in response to the inefficiency induced by adverse selection, may signal their unobservable values through choices of equity flotation methods. In the context of UK open offers and rights offers, we provide evidences for this signalling hypothesis. We find that information content significantly falls after both rights offers and open offers, which suggests resolution of asymmetric information with equity offers. Our result suggests there exists a non-pooling equilibrium through firms’ choices of equity flotation methods and that open offers are employed by good firms to signal quality to the public. Besides, with the measures of information content of trades, we establish some patterns of adverse selection in London SEAQ. Information content of trades is related to trade size. Small trades are not informative, while median trades and large trades are informative. For the comparison between purchases and sales, large purchases are more informative than large sales, while median purchases are less informative than median sales. These results suggest informed traders handle large purchases and large sales with different strategies, and that market makers are less harsh to traders with positive private information. We set up a hypothesis of the pattern of human intermediation in London SEAQ: human intermediation works in a “carrot” format when private information is more costly to obtain and adverse selection is more severe; it works in a “stick” format when information of a stock can be generated for less less cost and market makers face fewer threats from informed trading. In most long-term bilateral trading relationships, transaction parties have to make investments which are geared towards their partners. Once the investments are sunk, a party can not rely on market to discipline his partner, and his investments return will be vulnerable to expropriation. This problem, known as the hold-up problem, will discourage parties from making socially desirable investments. We reconsider the hold-up problem by allowing a party to separately invest in his outside option in order to capture its value. We find that after considering this investment option, the hold-up problem is potentially more severe than previously observed. Parties to a transaction may make investments which are not productive from a social point of view. More importantly, the inefficient investment may even crowd out relationship specific investments, which may result in relationship-breaking in a highly productive relationship.

Elias, Nadia. "Marked theme and intonation's role in achieving topical coherence in spoken discourse in English." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2018. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/119685/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study focuses on the negotiation of "topical coherence" (Geluykkens, 1999). Using a Map Task, it investigates how the interaction between 'Thematic Structure': Theme and Rheme and 'Information Structure': Given and New (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014; Halliday, 1967a, b) achieves coherence in informal English discourse. The starting point for investigation of topical coherence is the idea that Theme and Given coincide in unmarked cases. The study examines instances where the two systems do not coincide and examines the meanings that are generated through this divergence in order to reveal what effect this divergence has on the spoken interaction. Marked Themes by being usually realised in their own tone groups are information units with information foci and thus informationally foregrounded (Tench, 1996). The focus of information will fall on the Theme as well as on the Rheme. The study examines what role the intonational realisations of the marked Theme, tonicity, tonality and key system will have in structuring map task interactions and in facilitating the successful completion of a map task. Data gleaned from map task shows that marked Theme aids the interlocutors in their negotiation as it is used to foreground previously mentioned information (e.g. a landmark or location on the map) by taking it as point of departure to more easily guide the hearers to the intended location. The data shows also that the previously mentioned information within the marked Theme is made tonic, projected as if it were New and marked Theme is presented as an information unit, in separate tone group, to attract hearers' attention to the importance of the information within the marked Theme. Therefore, the interaction between word order and intonation contributes to guiding the hearers more easily to the intended location. The data also shows that there is an interaction between key and marked Theme. Marked Theme is uttered on high key in contexts that demand the projection of particular information within the marked Theme to draw hearers' attention to the exact location on the map and on mid key to denote the addition of information and to confirm and clarify the details. The information uttered on high key within the marked Theme is previously introduced information (i.e. recoverable). It is concluded that marked Theme aids the interlocutors of the map task in their interaction about the route and contributes to achieving a coherent interaction on the topic of the map task, the route.

Abstract:
Research shows that students who believe their teachers are caring for them are more likely to engage with the class and exhibit higher levels of self-esteem and well-being. What we learn from the past should guide our present practice to pave the way for a more authentic relationship with our students in the future. This paper reports a case study of how a ‘pedagogy of care’ was implemented in a first-year large teacher-education unit of study at an Australian university during the transition to fully online learning and teaching in response to the pandemic. The paper reports the strategies adopted by the teaching team and the results of an online survey conducted with the students about their experience of the transition. The qualitative survey responses were organised into themes that illustrated how students perceived teacher care. According to the students, teachers cared when they organised consistent synchronous sessions, provided opportunity for interaction between students, recorded lectures, were lenient, modified assessment, marked assessments quickly, exhibited positivity, and acknowledged challenges due to COVID-19. These themes were then classified into two broad categories on a continuum ranging between the delivery of the unit to interpersonal or human aspects.

Abstract:
At least two fundamental types of evidence feature in attempts to persuade: Anecdotal and generalized (Baesler & Burgoon, 1994). Experimental research has found anecdotal evidence more effective at changing attitudes in issues marked by personal significance and health-relevance (Freling et al., 2020). These apply to marijuana legalization, where a massive shift in American attitudes (from 35% to 67% in favor during 2008-2019; Pew Research Center, 2019) was followed by rapid legalization. However, no research to date has examined whether the movement benefited from anecdotal framing. Since the attitude shift coincided with the rise of social media, we developed the largest corpus of marijuana legalization discussions from Reddit to address this gap (more than 3M comments from 2008-2019, comprising more than 300M words). The dataset is the first to separate marijuana legalization discourse from general mentions of cannabis (e.g., product advertisements) across an entire popular platform. We then developed neural network models to distinguish anecdotal from generalized text in the dataset based on three clause-level features derived from linguistic theory: Whether a clause is about a generic kind rather than specific instances, whether it presents a reliable state or an event, and whether events are bounded in time. Principal Components Analysis provided a reliable composite score of the three features, treated as a measure of the degree to which major themes of discourse are anecdotal versus generalized. We combined topic modeling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation; Blei et al., 2003) with hierarchical clustering and smoothed polynomial regressions to track themes’ prominence over time and bin them into broader categories. Anecdotal themes were less prevalent but present in most comments. We trained separate neural networks on human annotations of attitude and persuasion attempt. Within non-argumentative discourse, anecdotes became more prominent only later in time, presumably as a consequence of softening societal attitudes. But they played a more prominent role throughout in arguments favoring legalization, suggesting that they were actively used to persuade others. Were such anecdotal arguments timed in a way that benefitted legalization ballot initiatives? To answer, we inferred user locations and compared the rate of anecdotal themes before and after legalization in comments from pioneering states. Despite the experimental evidence favoring anecdotal argumentation, we found that the 2012 and 2016 legal milestones followed short-term increases in generalized arguments instead. The particular content, however, varied between the two periods. Character judgments were prominent in 2012, while crime and politics took center-stage in 2016. The generalized precedents of legalization in leading states were argumentative and moralistic but had distinctive clause-level profiles. Meanwhile, legal and medical arguments were sidelined, meaning the novel consensus was not informed by much of the relevant information, anecdotal or otherwise. Together, our results show that while the emerging consensus probably benefited from anecdotal argumentation, the legalization movement’s success happened despite its reliance on less effective generalized discussions with less concrete information content. Addressing this discrepancy between experimental research and the direction of societal discourse may help bring about more informed discussions while better enabling the changing of attitudes.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of a qualitative research of an Erasmus+ KA201 project “CATCH 21st Skills – Changing the Approach to Teaching in Higher Education”. The main method used in the research was a semi-structured interview led with six human resources (HR) managers of six Czech private companies. The aim of the qualitative research was to find answers to the question: Which transferable competencies are the most important for the graduate's successfulness in the labour market? After completing the interviews, the research team was able to link the concrete 21st century skills with four competence areas (sub-themes), to identify the two most important clusters of competencies (communication and collaboration) which are the most important for the employers. Secondly, the research team members found out what changes in educational paradigm would bring benefits for actual demands of job market. The conclusion of the paper offers ways and tools for development competencies among university students and it brings the description of the thesis for transforming the educational paradigm.

Abstract:
One of the major interests of higher education institutions is the creation of transformative methods that favor the instructional process, where students participate in their academic training through the generation of dynamic and open areas of interaction. This study describes the development of a strategy to understand the stock market with the application of technological tools based on 3D virtual environments. These environments known as Metaverses are immersive platforms that create experiences in an extended reality. The strategy consisted of designing and building a virtual learning environment on the Second Life platform to strengthen students' stock market skills. The instructional design was developed with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) methodology focused on five themes: The world financial system, capital markets, products traded on the stock exchange, stock market indexes and famous cases in stock markets. The proposal was evaluated with 73 students of business administration career of a private university in Ecuador. According to the statistical information, 56% of the students have not used a metaverse before, 56% have not even practiced in real environments or simulators to learn the dynamics of the stock markets, 85% have not interacted with an avatar in cyberspace before, 78% consider the use of interactive spaces interesting, 79% were motivated to participate in 3D virtual environment strategies, 95% of students were engagement with active methodologies, 97% support the continuation of classes in the Second Life platform and 100% mention that it is necessary to create metaverses that allow them to interact and learn in a better way. The implementation of virtual worlds in e-learning platforms reinforces knowledge and management skills in the stock market

Abstract:
This paper describes the development and evolution of research themes in the Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) conference. Essays containing reflections on the history of DTM, supported by an analysis of session titles and papers winning the “best paper award”, describe the development of the research themes. A second set of essays describes the evolution of several key research themes. Two broad trends in research themes are evident, with a third one emerging. The topics of the papers in the first decade or so reflect an underlying aim to apply artificial intelligence toward developing systems that could ‘design’. To do so required understanding how human designers behave, formalizing design processes so that they could be computed, and formalizing representations of design knowledge. The themes in the first DTM conference and the recollections of the DTM founders reflect this underlying aim. The second decade of DTM saw the emergence of product development as an underlying concern and included a growth in a systems view of design. More recently, there appears to be a trend toward design-led innovation, which entails both executing the design process more efficiently and understanding the characteristics of market-leading designs so as to produce engineered products and systems of exceptional levels of quality and customer satisfaction.

Abstract:
Between May 2016 and March 2018, Oxfam in Iraq, together with the Iraqi Al Amal Association (IAA), collaborated on the ‘Safe access to resilient livelihoods opportunities for vulnerable conflict-affected women in Kirkuk’ project. Funded by UN Women, the project marked the first collaboration between Oxfam and IAA (a women’s rights organization working in Kirkuk). The core themes of the project were women’s rights and economic justice. It aimed to reach women who had been displaced, were returnees at the time, or members of the communities to which displaced people had moved (host communities). This Effectiveness Review focuses on investigating the impact of support to income-generating activities on the women who received this support. The evaluation used a mixed methods design. Acknowledging that different women face different barriers and may have therefore benefitted differently from the project, an initial vulnerability assessment was carried out to bring an intersectional lens to the review. Configurational analysis was used to explore the project's impact, alongside different types of qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics. Find out more by reading the full report now.

Quak, Evert-jan. Lessons Learned from Market Shaping Interventions to Stimulate Vaccine Production in LMIC. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.009.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises the literature from academic, policy, and knowledge institution sources on the lessons learned on how market shaping tools can be used to stimulate vaccine production in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with a focus on Africa. The purpose is to learn from these interventions in the context of shaping the vaccine markets in Africa to become less dependent on imports and to stimulate local production of vaccines. The rapid review concludes that it is the combination of market shaping tools (supply and demand sides) with efforts to mobilise resources and a clear industrial policy and strategy with long-term political commitment that is needed to develop fully integrated vaccine facilities in LMICs at the national and regional levels. These facilities or “vaccine manufacturing networks” in LMICs, particularly in Africa, need to sell below their production cost for many years after entering the market. This is because they compete within well-established global vaccine markets to which the low-income countries have access through pooled procurement mechanisms. This means that governments in low-income countries have arguably good access to affordable but imported vaccines while needing heavy investment and subsidies to develop competitive vaccine manufacturers. The literature on market-shaping is mainly conceptual without mentioning much empirical evidence. It has a bias on firms and presumes firm strategies to shape markets for their own benefit. The literature often underestimates the role that governments play in shaping markets. As such, this rapid review relies on other sources to investigate the interventions by governments to shape markets and how donors could support these governments in their efforts.

Abstract:
Since the turn of the century, emerging market economies have begun to develop markets for bonds denominated in their local currencies, thus trying to avoid the “original sin” that resulted in many previous crises. This paper tries to determine the impact of foreign investment in these markets for seven Latin American economies. It finds that foreign investment can be either a blessing or a curse, depending on depreciation expectations.
