Bal, Mustafa. "The End: The Apocalyptic In In-yer-face Drama." Phd thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/3/12610781/index.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a close analysis of one of the ageless discourses of human life &ndash
apocalypse, or the End &ndash
within the highly controversial In-Yer-Face drama of the 1990s British stage. The study particularly argues that there is a strong apocalyptic sense in the plays of the decade, and it discovers that the apocalyptic representation within these plays varies. Five plays by three prominent playwrights of the decade are used to illustrate and expand the focus. After a detailed examination of the apocalyptic discourse, it is claimed that Mark Ravenhill&rsquo
s Shopping and F***ing and Faust is Dead are based on certain philosophical ideas of the End, Anthony Neilson&rsquo
s Normal and Penetrator reveal the apocalyptic through an extreme use of violence, and Sarah Kane&rsquo
s 4.48 Psychosis comingles representations of the apocalyptic and psychological trauma.

This thesis examines the influence of 'water regime', or spatial and temporal patterns in the presence of water, on the floristic composition of wetlands on the River Murray in South Australia. It explores the hypothesis that the composition of wetland vegetation is determined by components of the water regime, namely depth, duration and the rate and timing of flood and drawdown.

Forshaw, Joseph M., Mark Shephard OAM, and Anthony Pridham. Grassfinches in Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643107878.

Full text
Abstract:
It is not surprising that Australian grassfinches are highly popular with ornithologists and aviculturists, for included among the species are one of the most beautiful of all birds – the Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae – and one of the most familiar cagebirds – the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata. Despite a scarcity in published works on finches, interest in the species is growing, leading to a dramatic advancement in our knowledge of many species. For example, we have gained new information from field observations carried out on little-known species, including the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch Erythrura trichroa and the Red-eared Firetail Stagonopleura oculata. Significant advances in taxonomic research, largely as a consequence of the development and refinement of biochemical analyses, often involving DNA-DNA hybridisation, have given us a new insight into relationships among species, with some unexpected alliances being determined. Additionally, dramatic changes have taken place in avicultural practices, and in virtually all countries aviculture has taken on a new professional approach, with the most notable results being increased productivity and success with a wider variety of species. After a lapse of almost half a century since publication of Klaus Immelmann’s eminent work on finches, based on extensive field studies, the time has come for a new examination of Australian grassfinches. In Grassfinches in Australia, Joseph Forshaw, Mark Shephard and Anthony Pridham have summarised our present knowledge of each species, and have given readers a visual appreciation of the birds in their natural habitats and in aviculture. The resulting combination of superb artwork and scientifically accurate text ensures that this volume will become the standard reference work on Australian grassfinches. In addition to enabling aviculturists to know more about these finches in the wild as a guide to their own husbandry techniques, detailed information on current management practices for all species in captivity is provided. The book also includes colour plates depicting some of the more common mutations held in Australian and overseas collections. 2013 Whitley Award Commendation for Illustrated Zoology.

Abstract:
This chapter describes British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Three Songs (2000). This assured, agreeably compact cycle should prove a boon to baritones seeking a winning concert item by an established British composer. Phrase lengths are judged perfectly and the range and timbres of the baritone voice are heard with unfailing accuracy. Word-setting is impeccable and plentiful dynamics and nuances help to guide the interpretation. The first two poems celebrate cats (‘The Singing Cat’ and ‘Mourned’—a eulogy for a departed pet); and the last song reflects on the merits of animals in general (‘Last Words’). The score is presented with exemplary clarity, so that performers can assimilate it quickly. The ‘friendly postmodern’ idiom should not prove a barrier—piano parts are light and spare, so useful pitch-cues can be easily heard. The singer will need to be conscientious about tuning intervals. As the piece progresses, there are some wide leaps, but these are vocally gratifying. Although the work is not particularly taxing, it needs a crisp, neat delivery and a secure high range, as well as a lively presence and an instinct for characterization.

Abstract:
The sculptural group in stone reconsidered in this article is a representation of a couple of youthful figures, standing entwined in the coils of two large serpents, crowned with a solar disk and a lunar crescent. The statue was discovered in Dendera in 1918 and is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (JE 46278). A hypothetical identification proposed by the author would see in the figures the twin children of Cleopatra VII and Mark Anthony, represented here as the two Egyptian astral deities. The author explores the iconographic and stylistic issues involved, arriving at a late Ptolemaic date for the sculpture, fitting for the proposed identification.

Abstract:
This brief epilogue addresses the relationship—historical and present—between the exclusivity of the priestly performing persona and the development and perpetuation of canonical compositions. The author suggests that the two reinforce each other; Clara Schumann’s status as a priestess was informed by her selection of certain repertoire, but at the same time her “restrained” performance of the pieces helped mark them as serious works worthy of preservation. Jumping to today’s world of performance, the author analyzes the rhetoric in a New York Times article by Anthony Tommasini comparing two young pianists. The juxtaposition of these sources suggests that some nineteenth-century values of priestly performance, such as “seriousness” and “modesty,” still inform music criticism today.
