Abstract:
Marital rape has become a hot topic of conversation in Indonesia in recent times, along with the ratification of the RUU-PKS. Some people consider it a crime; others consider it unreasonable, so they think that the RUU-PKS is unnecessary in Indonesia. Then, is it true that marital rape is a crime? Why do so many still think of it as making it up if it is true? This topic is essential because marital rape is a form of violence that seems to be legalized in society. Whereas, National Commission on Violence Against Women reported that the cases of marital rape are always more than 100 cases every year. By using the literature research method that refers to the descriptive-qualitative research model and using Kate Millett's sexual-political theory. That marital rape is a crime that falls into sexual violence because it has an element of coercion in sexual intercourse. In addition, people who disagree with the criminalization of marital rape are caused by the existence of a patriarchal mindset in the culture of Indonesian society. Inherited customs and misconceptions of religion influence this mindset taught long ago. This research aims to explain why the RUU-PKS could be a tool to educate the public about marital rape so that it can gradually eliminate marital rape and patriarchy in Indonesia.

The article explores the ongoing dispute connected with land rights in the district of Wonosobo, Central Java, within the framework of state formation and sovereignty. It is argued that in many places in Indonesia and Central Java, local landscapes have become sites of violent struggles for sovereignty more broadly. An analytical distinction between modern and traditional forms of power is made and ethnographically explored, but it is argued that, rather than being separate entities, both forms become conflated in the struggle for sovereignty in various spheres, creating hybrid forms of power. Keywords: dispute, forest landscape, Java, power, sovereignty, state, violence

Abstract:
Abstract Generally, marriage is a moment of happiness, but it cannot deny that when marriage occurs, it brings misery in it such as Domestic Violence. There are several causes of Domestic Violence which split into various aspects, and one of them is sexual violence. This often makes the wife in a weak position or has a more inferior position, making her victim of her husband. The marital status that binds the wife as the victim and the husband as the perpetrator should not abolish the woman's rights over her body. The wife's position as a victim causes her physical and psychological traumatization, making the community also take responsibility by providing moral support. Not necessarily blaming the victim and justifying the behaviour of the perpetrator because it is still considered forbidden for the community to interfere in household matters. Any form of violence and its occurrence is not something that can be accepted and justified in the rule of law in each country. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss acts related to sexual harassment without the victim's consent even in a marriage bond, known as marital rape. In Indonesia, the criminal act of domestic violence is regulated in Act No. 23 of 2004, which concerns the elimination of domestic violence, requires a clear and firm implementation, because the law must provide protection to victims and the accountability of perpetrators of such violence must be adjusted to the applied laws and regulations.

Abstract:
This study examines sexual exploitation and violence against prostituted children in East Java, Indonesia. Children who are involved in the commercial sex industry are generally prone to become victims of exploitation, violent acts, and other child abuse. This case study employs a qualitative research method to examine the various hardships experienced by prostituted children in East Java, Indonesia. The researchers interviewed ten prostituted children, seven “grey chickens” (female high school students doubling as prostituted children), eight former prostituted children, five pimps, eight procurers, and seven male customers in Surabaya City and Pasuruan Regency. This study found that, in the Indonesian commercial sex industry, prostituted children generally experience severe exploitation and violent acts. The children’s struggle to survive in the Indonesian prostitution business is a challenging condition because of their weak bargaining position: their subordinate status in the Indonesian patriarchal ideology, their weak position as children confronting adults, as well as their low socioeconomic position. The efforts to make policies to prevent exploitation and violence against prostituted children by the government and non-government agencies thus should take into account the conditions of the prostituted children as well as the driving factors for the child prostitution business that takes place in Indonesia.

Financial literacy is one of the relevant facts in improving the economy. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of demographic factors (i.e., marital status, education level, income, and age) and financial socialization agent on financial literacy. Using online and offline questionnaire survey from 100 respondents in Surabaya, East Java, and the study revealed that education level, personal income, and financial socialization agent, give the positive effect, while the marital status and age does not affect financial literacy. This result implies that the government can focus on educating the development and improvement of financial literacy for the society. It is believed to be a step forward in practicing financial planning from an early age to solve problems with financial management using financial knowledge, financial attitude, and financial behavior.DOI: 10.15408/etk.v17i2.6681

Abstract:
Even though Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning on the Elimination of Domestic Violence was promulgated fifteen years ago, the number of domestic violence against women has not significantly decreased. The Law has not set concrete actions that may fall under the domestic violence that can be punished, particularly in terms of sexual abuse psychological violence, and negligence in household towards women. This research aims to analyze domestic violence against women in this Law and the conducts that are considered to be domestic violence which is commonly found in daily life in Indonesia. A purely qualitative research method encompassing document analysis of key documents in Indonesia and the Anti-Domestic Violence Law 2004 is adopted in this paper. The research reveals that This Law is particularly protecting women from household violence in Indonesia. The law has recognized physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and negligence as sorts of domestic violence against women in household although it might find difficult to enforce the law when dealing with marital rape regarding lack of reports from victims and polygamy concerning circumstances that can be used to criminalize the perpetrators.

The long term demographic transition impacts on the explosion of productive age population number and even the demographic trend shows an increasing productive age population growth pattern. There is a worry that the productive age populations not be absorbed in job opportunity will be unemployed. Productive age unemployment will impact on the high educated unemployment rate. This research would analyze demographic and social factors underlying educated unemployment in Central Java in 2018 from supply side only. The data used was raw data on the result of National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS) conducted by BPS-Statistics of Central Java Province on February with 3375 respondents being the sample. The methods employed were descriptive and binary logistic regression analyses. The result of research showed that age, family member number, sex, and relationship to household head, marital status, residence area, and on-the-job training variables simultaneously affected the predisposition of educated work force to be unemployed. Meanwhile, partially family member number and residence area variables did not affect an individual’s predisposition to be educated unemployed

Hayati, Elli Nur. "Domestic violence against women in rural Indonesia : searching for multilevel prevention." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Epidemiologi och global hälsa, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-83181.

Abstract:
Background: Domestic violence has been recognized globally as one of the most important Public Health concerns with severe negative health consequences for the exposed women. Through UN bodies several international milestones have successfully pushed attention towards worldwide improvements in the life situations of women. Since the ratification of the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1984, significant positive changes towards equality between men and women in Indonesia have been initiated, one being the enactment of the Domestic Violence Act in 2004. However, there is still a need to improve the knowledge about what preventive measures that are feasible and work in different settings. This thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding of appropriate prevention strategies against domestic violence in rural Indonesia by exploring: i) risk factors for domestic violence; ii) women’s ways of coping with exposure to violence; iii) men’s views on masculinity and violence within marriage; and iv) challenges faced by local service agency in managing services for women survivors of domestic violence. Methods: Data from a cross sectional population based study was used to analyze risk factors for physical and sexual abuse among a cohort of pregnant women in Purworejo district. Further, a qualitative phenomenological interview study was conducted to reveal the dynamics of coping among women survivors of domestic violence in the same district. A Grounded Theory study based on focus group discussions with men formed the basis for a situational analysis of the linkage between masculinity and the use of violence within marriage. Finally, a qualitative case study was performed to explore the management practices of a local service agency in the district, to understand the challenges faced in their efforts to address domestic violence. Results: Sexual violence was associated with husbands’ demographic characteristics (age and low educated) and women’s economic independence. Exposure to physical violence among women was strongly associated with husbands’ personal characteristics. The attitudes and norms expressed by women confirmed unequal gender relationships. Experiencing violence led women to using an elastic band coping strategy, moving between actively opposing the violence and surrendering or tolerating the situation. The national gender equality policies were shown to have played a crucial role in transforming gender power relations among men and women (the gender order) in the Indonesian society. Three different positions of masculinity were identified, the traditionalist, the egalitarian, and the progressive, with different beliefs about men’s role within marriage and with various levels of accepting the use of violence. Long term structural preventive efforts and individual interventions targeted to the conflicting couples were preferred over reporting the abuser to the authorities. The major challenges faced by the local service agency were the low priority given by the authorities, mirrored also in low involvement in the daily service by the assigned volunteers. The local agency also stammered in translating the current law and policies into a society that held on to traditional and religious norms regulating the relationships between men and women. Conclusion: Overall, this thesis illustrates that sociocultural traditions and religious teaching still viscously influence people’s attitudes and beliefs about the use of violence within relationships. Domestic violence has not been accepted as a criminal act but is still to a large extent seen as a private family affair. Culturally sensitive programs aimed to bridging the gap between the current laws and policies and the socio-cultural traditions need to be further developed to protect women from domestic violence and increase gender equity in the Indonesian setting.

Abstract:
This thesis is an ethnography of Bugis marriage. It is concerned with aspects of gender, sexuality and marriage in a bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. ¶ I examine the fundamental concept of siri’ in relation to gender socialisation, courtship, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, how sexuality is regulated between the sexes, sex within marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. The analysis considers how Islam combines with local custom (adat) in everyday practices, and how Bugis cultural specificities are affected within the national ideology of contemporary Indonesia. ¶ This ethnography explores an interpretation of Bugis social and sexual experience through examination of the construction of gender identities and how they are manifested in marriage. The thesis explores the complementarity of gender for the Bugis. Despite the ideal of feminine passivity, I demonstrate that women exercise agency in a number of circumstances, including how they manage the sexuality of their husbands, defending siri’, the arrangement of marriage, remarrying, money management, divorce, and violent situations. I also examine the practices of illegal marriage (kawin liar) and illegal divorce (cerai liar) at local and personal levels. I analyse local and national debates on the legitimation of what is popularly known in Indonesia as ‘marriage based on religion’ (nikah secara agama) as part of the examination of Bugis marriage and marital relations. ¶ My thesis contributes to the understanding of Bugis notions of sexuality, gender and social location, and how these interact with siri’. I explore how and why violence occurs within marriage. I use a combination of informal interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions as well textual analysis of traditional manuscripts and incorporation of oral traditions.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the evolution of the Darul Islam rebellion in West Java to explain how the group shifted from one fighting against colonial forces to one staging an insurgency against the Indonesian Republic that has inspired subsequent generations of Islamist activism. The group turned toward armed resistance against the government to protect its organizational interests and authority in the face of perceived external aggression. During the rebellion, however, Darul Islam was severely weakened by the combination of effective military campaigns waged against it, member defections, offers of amnesty, and the loss of public support. The rebellion eventually ran out of steam and withered away after the death of the main leader, Sekarmadji Maridjan Kartosuwirjo. However, though the West Java rebellion was defeated, the idea of establishing an Islamic state in Indonesia persisted, and it continues to inspire Islamist activists to this day.

This chapter cites traditional religious elites' religious authority and strategic coalition with radical Islamists to take account for religious intolerance in Indonesia. The chapter refers to West Java as an ideal case study to answer questions pertinent to religious tolerance, antiminority violence, and pluralism. Religious intolerance violates the individual and communal rights of religious and secular citizens. Islamic conservativism and religious intolerance at the national level grew more prominent after Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was elected president in 2004. Moreover, collective intolerance is detrimental in improving the state's ability and willingness to protect the fundamental constitutional rights of religious and secular populations.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a commonly used measure of health outcome. It reflects several dimensions of health, including physical, psychological, social, cognitive function, as well as general well-being, including in elderly population. The association between social capital and HRQoL in elderly has been rarely studied in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biopsychosocial factors influencing the quality of life of elderly using path analysis. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in Surakarta, Central Java, in December 2019. A sample of 200 elderly was selected by simple random sampling. The dependent variable was quality of life.
