Abstract:
One hundred twenty African-American and Euro-American married individuals were asked to complete inventories measuring marital distress, dysfunctional beliefs about marital relationships, and socioeconomic status (SES). It was hypothesized there would be a negative relationship between the dysfunctional beliefs that married individuals held and their level of marital satisfaction; there would be no significant difference between the dysfunctional beliefs that married individuals held across gender and race; and finally, the dysfunctional beliefs of married individuals would provide a better prediction of marital satisfaction than SES, gender, age, or race. Results indicate that Disagreement is destructive (D), Mindreading is expected (M), Partners cannot change (C), Sexual perfectionism is a must (S), and The sexes are dramatically different (MF) each obtained a statistically significant negative association with marital satisfaction. Examining the relationship between gender and marital satisfaction, males reported higher levels of marital satisfaction than females. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were obtained for gender but not for race when considering all five dysfunctional marital beliefs simultaneously. Finally, the various factors considered in this study accounted for 30% of the variance in marital satisfaction.

Abstract:
Clinical interest in PMS has existed for more than one and a half centuries. There is still no consensus about its frequency, seriousness, etiology or treatment. Its impact on marital relationships has not been an area of research interest, even though one woman in twenty, or even one every ten, may be so afflicted that her life is disrupted premenstrually month after month. This study was designed to explore this research area through the use of prospective self-reporting measuring instruments completed on a daily basis by both husband and wife in six couples over a time period of one complete menstrual cycle. The husband's perception of his wife's negative affect was one independent variable. The wife's perception of her own negative affect was the other. Six dependent variables were measured: The husband's and wife's self rating of own marital satisfaction; the husband's and the wife's perceptions of the spouse's displeasing behaviors; and the husband's and the wife's perceptions of the spouse's pleasing behaviors. A case study approach was used and, in addition to time series analysis of the daily ratings, a semi-structured exit interview was conducted with each couple so that anecdotal material could be compared and evaluated along with the quantifiable data. Because of the nature of the study, self-definition and diagnosis of PMS was chosen as the admission criterion. In addition, the wife could not be using oral contraceptives, nor could she be taking over-the-counter or prescribed medication for her PMS. Decreases in the husband's marital satisfaction were found to be associated with increases in his perception of his wife's negative affect in five of the six cases. In four of the six cases, the husband perceived an increase in displeasing behaviors by his wife when he perceived an increase in her symptoms.

Kelley, Douglas Lee. "Understanding relational expectations and perceptions of relational satisfaction in marital relationships." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184513.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the role that relational expectations play in determining marital satisfaction and in discriminating between married couple types. The discrepancy between one's expectations for his or her spouse's relational behavior and one's perceptions of his or her spouse's actual behavior significantly predicted marital satisfaction. In addition, this expectation/perception discrepancy was revealed to be a stronger predictor of marital satisfaction than agreement between spouses on relational expectations. There were few differences in relational expectations when compared across couple type, however when compared across individual marital type significant or near significant differences were displayed for the relational dimensions of intimacy, receptivity, mutual respect and frustration. A global measure of marital satisfaction was developed and the usefulness of this instrument is discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between acculturative stress and marital distress among Hispanic American women and to explore the potential mediating roles of variables believed to be important to marital functioning among ethnic minorities and immigrants (e.g., acculturation, ethnic identity, social support, etc.). Based on data from 103 Hispanic American married women, pressure to acculturate toward the dominant culture of the U.S. was found to significantly correlate with the amount of distress the women reported in their marital relationships. Two variables were found to partially mediate the correlation. Perceived social support and recent stressful life events attenuated the effect acculturative stress had on marital distress. The importance for mental health professionals to address acculturative stress with Hispanic women or couples in marital therapy, and other clinical implications of the findings, are discussed.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate two hypotheses. The first was to determine if either an individual's epistemic style or Christian maturity were capable of predicting marital satisfaction among couples where at least one spouse was a church attender. The second was to determine if a matching score between spouses on epistemic style and Christian maturity would be able to predict marital satisfaction among couples where at least one spouse was a church attender. The Global Distress Scale (GDS) of the Marital Satisfaction Inventory was used as the dependent variable. The Psycho-Epistemological Profile (PEP) was used to measure epistemic style while the Shepherd Scale was used to measure Christian maturity.Fifty-two couples where at least one spouse was a church attender ultimately participated in the study. These couples were obtained by randomly contacting churches and soliciting the assistance of church representatives to help elicit participation. Ultimately seven of the churches contacted in this manner participated in the study. The results indicate that only the metaphorical epistemic style was a moderate predictor of marital satisfaction accounting for approximately 4% of the variance. Neither the matching score on epistemic style nor on Christian maturity were able to predict marital satisfaction.

Abstract:
Communication is an integral part of all relationships. The intent of this study was to discover if certain individual preferences for approaching conflict occur in a significant fashion between the partners of particular types of marriages. In addition, this study meant to better understand how conflict is perceived and responded to, in marriage and/or long term relationships. Fitzpatrick's (1977) Relational Dimensions Inventory (RDI), was used for this study to characterize three dimensions of marriage: interdependence, ideology, and conflict engagement/avoidance, resulting in the following marital types: Traditionals, Independents, Separates, and Mixed. Rahim's (1983) instrument, the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory (ROCI), was also used to measure five independent patterns of handling interpersonal conflict: Integrating, Dominating, Compromising, Avoiding, and Obliging. Based on prior work of Fitzpatrick (1975, 1983, 1988) and Rahim (1983), this study asked: Do conflict styles vary across marital types? Individual hypotheses examined occurrences of particular conflict styles within specific marital types. The data represent 103 couples. Data were derived from a Likert type survey instrument of Fitzpatrick's RDI and Rahim's ROCI-II, with a total of 65 questions. Chi-square and cross-tabulation were used to reveal associations between marital type and conflict style. Bonferroni procedure for multiple hypotheses was applied. Cross-tabulation did not indicate a relationship between marital types and conflict styles. One hypothesis was statistically supported. As couple level data produced few significant results, post hoc analysis at the individual level was conducted. Conflict styles were conceptually divided into concern for self and concern for other. ANOVA was run on marital type, other orientation, and satisfaction. Significant results are reported for wives.

Culpepper, Bonnie Courtland. "Relations Between Depression and Relationship Quality Among Couples with a Depressed Male." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/23161.

Full text
Abstract:
Major depressive disorder is a prevalent and serious mental health disorder that negatively affects individuals and their intimate relationships. Given little is known about the experience of depression for men, and the co-occurrence of male depression and marital discord, the current study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of spouses\' experience of male depression, and how depression affects their relationships. Using a stress generation perspective, this qualitative study interviewed depressed men and their partners about both partners\' experiences of male depression in their relationships and their experience of the relationship between marital discord and depression. Couples identified behaviors and aspects of their relationships that influenced the relation between depression and relationship quality and partially supported the applicability of stress generation theory among couples with a depressed male partner. In addition to partially supporting stress generation theory, couples highlighted several positive experiences in their relationships as a result of enduring these struggles together. The findings pointed to several clinical implications and areas of future research among this population.

Abstract:
The present study examined the relationships among similarity, interpersonal perception and communicative behaviors in marriage. It was hypothesized that greater understanding, feelings of being understood, and realization of understanding would be associated with greater self-disclosure, use of more direct person control strategies, and use of less attention control strategies. It was further hypothesized that measuring feelings of being understood and realization of understanding, in addition to measuring understanding, would improve prediction of behavior. Finally, it was hypothesized that the contextual measure of understanding would better predict self-disclosure and interpersonal control than would global measures of understanding.

Rogers, Donna R. "PMS: Bi-Phasic Differences in Personality and Marital Relations Among a Clinical Sample." DigitalCommons@USU, 1987. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/2693.

Full text
Abstract:
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a controversial and widely misunderstood syndrome which encompasses mood, behavior, and physical symptoms that occur cyclically and are associated with the menstrual cycle. Many women report suffering from recurring PMS symptoms severe enough to create a temporary physical or mental incapacitation which may affect the marital relationship. A study was initiated to document bi-phasic personality and marital changes related to PMS. This sample consisted of 119 adult females and their husbands, ranging in age between 18 and 60, who sought diagnosis and treatment at the Utah PMS Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Within this clinical sample, comparisons were made between those who appeared to have the most positive indicators of PMS, as identified by the Dalton Diagnostic Pointer, the monthly symptom calendar, and the dOCtor's diagnostic impression, and those who did not, according to the same criteria. The marital relationship was assessed by both husband and wife during the follicular (approximately day 6 to day 14) and luteal (approximately day 14 to first day of menses) phases of the menstrual cycle using the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Scale. Personality changes were measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPO, which was administered to the wife only during both phases. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to determine if I) for the entire sample, there are differences in women's mental health, and marital adjustment (as reported by both husband and wife) between the two cyclic phases, and 2) whether or not mental health and marital adjustment changes are similar between those women with positive indicators of PMS, versus those without. Final results of this study show that, overall, the entire sample is reporting significantly less healthy personality adjustment for the wife, as well as lower marital adjustment for both husband and wife during the symptomatic phase. There are some indications that, although these changes are present in both groups (those with PMS and those without), the changes are less dramatic for those women and couples with less likelihood of PMS. These findings have important implications for counselors and marriage therapists in that PMS has been shown to be related to psychological dysfunction and marital stress. Diagnosticians who test women during the symptomatic phase and obtain test results which are not representative of the client"s overall health and well-being would also benefit from the results of this study. Abstract:
This study was designed to examine the relationships of multiple types of domestic victimization (i.e., physical, psychological, sexual, and economic violence) to women&rsquo
s marital adjustment and psychological well-being, together with their socio-demographic characteristics and attachment, marital coping, and social support aspects. Altogether 524 married women provided data on domestic violence (Revised Conflict Tactics Scale), economic violence (Economic Violence Index), attachment (couples version of Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised), marital coping (Marital Coping Inventory), social support (Social Support Index), dyadic adjustment (Dyadic Adjustment Scale), psychological well-being (Brief Symptom Inventory), as well as demographic information. Results appeared to indicate a general tendency that women who have arranged marriages, more children, low education, low educated husbands, no or low income, and/or women who have more income compared to their husbands report higher levels of multiple types of domestic violence. Furthermore, the findings indicated that multiple types of domestic violence account for significant variances in marital adjustment and psychological well-being of married women, even after controlling for their attachment dimensions, marital coping strategies, and social support from different support groups. The findings were discussed in accordance with the relevant literature, and their implications for clinical practices and future studies were suggested.

Abstract:
Texas law regarding the legal status of women and their property rights developed from the mingling of Spanish and English laws. Spanish laws regarding the protection of women's rights developed during the centuries-long Reconquest, when the Spanish Christians slowly took back the Iberian Peninsula from the Moorish conquerors. Women were of special importance to the expansion of Spanish civilization. Later, when Spain conquered and colonized the New World, these rights for women came, too. In the New World, women's rights under Spanish law remained the same as in Spain. Again, the Spanish were spreading their civilization across frontiers and women needed protection. When the Spanish moved into Texas, they brought their laws with them yet again. Archival evidence demonstrates that Spanish laws in early Texas remained essentially unchanged with regard to the status of women. Events in the history of England caused its legal system to develop in a different manner from Spain's. In England, the protection of property was the law's most important goal. With the growth of English common law, husbands gained the right to control their wives's lives in that married women lost all legal identity. When the English legal system crossed the Atlantic and took root in the United States, little changed, especially in the southern states, when migrants from there entered Texas. When these Anglo-American colonists came into contact with Spanish/Mexican laws, they tended to prefer the legal system they knew best. Accordingly, with the creation of the Republic of Texas, and later the state of Texas, most laws derived from English common law. From Spanish laws, legislators adopted only those that dealt with the protection of women, developed on the Spanish frontier, because they were so much more suitable to life in Texas. Later lawmakers and judges used these same laws to protect the family's property from creditors, as well as to advance the legal status of women in Texas.

Abstract:

Haferkamp, Claudia J. "Conflict among clinic couples : self-monitoring, attributions, and resolution strategies." Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/517085.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship of self-monitoring processes and causal attributions to choice of conflict resolution strategy among married clinic couples was examined. Thirty-five couples and nine individual spouses who were currently receiving marriage counseling completed four questionnaires: the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Scale; Snyder's Self-Monitoring Scale; a Marital Conflict Questionnaire, a measure of attributions; and a Conflict Strategy Scale measuring the frequency with which spouses used Integrative (cooperative), Distributive (uncooperative), and Denial-Avoidant conflict resolution strategies. The following hypotheses were tested: 1) self-monitoring differences between spouses would be positively associated with attributional conflicts and uncooperative modes of conflict resolution; 2) responsibility attributed to the partner would be associated with increased dispositional attributions for the partner's behavior, increased use of Distributive strategies, and lower overall marital satisfaction. Analyses included bivariate correlations and multiple regression analyses predicting conflict strategy and marital satisfaction from self-monitoring and attributions.Contrary to expectations, self-monitoring differences were not related to attributional conflict or conflict strategy endorsed. However, high self-monitoring spouses made more situational attributions for their partners' behavior and endorsed more frequent use of Dental-Avoidant strategies. Responsibility attributed to the partner had a positive relationship to dispositional attributions for the partner's behavior but no relationship to use of conflict strategy. Regression analyses indicated that self-monitoring, Intent to have an impact, and resolvability of conflicts accounted for significant amounts of variance in use of Distributive (uncooperative) strategies. Importance of conflicts, own control, and use of Denial-Avoidant strategies predicted more than three-fourths the variance in marital satisfaction. Results contradict previous research Indicating that partner responsibility Is associated with Increased uncooperative behavior. Present results suggest that self-presentational concerns are prevalent In marital conflicts and may enhance the likelihood of uncooperative/avoidant behavior. Possible modifications in the attributional model of marital conflict to account for the Impact of self-monitoring on conflict resolution in distressed relationships are proposed. Implications for therapy with distressed couples and future research on attributional processes in close relationships is discussed.

Ostenson, Joseph Andrew. "Measuring Marriage or Measuring Individuals: An Ontological Analysis of Marital Therapy Outcome Measures." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2419.

Full text
Abstract:
Many scholars have noted the pervasiveness of individualism in American culture, particularly in the marriage culture. Unfortunately, assuming individualism in the marriage culture poses very specific threats to marriage as an institution. Some claim that these individualistic assumptions have also infiltrated the marital sciences, undermining the efforts of researchers who hope to defend marriage. This dissertation explores that claim by analyzing seven of the most popular marital outcome instruments used by marital researchers today for individualistic assumptions. Using a conceptual analysis called "contrasting relations," the meanings of both the content and the process of the instruments are laid out according to their underlying ontological assumptions. Two types of ontology guide the analysis: weak relationality, that from which individualism arises, and strong relationality. As the results demonstrate, the instruments are in fact almost entirely underlain with individualistic assumptions. It is argued that outcome instruments used by marital researchers can only measure individualistic relationships (weak relationality), and are incapable of measuring strong relationships, implying that marital researchers are ill-equipped to measure relationships. Implications and future directions are explored.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate aspects of the coparenting relationship between employed mothers and fathers within the same family. Similarities and dissimilarities in parenting goals between married or cohabiting couples with toddler or preschool-aged children were the main focus. One hundred thirty couples were recruited via advertisements posted in community agencies and also through published advertisements in parent-oriented magazines. Parents who each worked (or attended school) twenty-five hours per week or more and who had an eldest child between 24 and 60 months of age participated independently in an interview about their parenting goals and also responded to questionnaires about family well-being. Overall, the participants were a well-adjusted sample of parents, representing the demographics of the Canadian city from which the majority of the sample was taken. A contextually-based vignette-style interview of parenting goals revealed moderate agreement between parents within the same family on parenting goals. Mothers and fathers reported parenting goals that were flexible and based on the behaviour displayed by the child. In particular, in responding to children's internalizing behaviour, parents attached greater importance to child-centred and relationship-centred goals than to parent-centred goals. In response to vignettes depicting externalizing child behaviour, parents endorsed greater importance for parent-centred goals than for either child-centred or relationship-centred goals. Similarity in parenting goals was higher for parents of toddlers than for parents of preschool-age children. Also, the greater the similarity in parenting goals between mothers and fathers the more satisfied mothers were with their parenting and their life in general. For fathers, greater similarity in parenting goals was related to greater satisfaction with their parenting only. Interestingly, although the degree of similarity in parenting goals was not related to marital satisfaction, the relation between similarity in parenting goals and mothers' ratings of marital satisfaction was different depending on the support for parenting mothers received from their partners. The findings of the present study emphasize that not all differences between parents on child-related issues are harmful to family well-being and that it is important to consider both mothers' and fathers' perspectives within the area of coparenting. Clinical and research implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Few studies have examined the effects of a divorce on internalizing symptomatology in children, and none have done so in a clinic sample. The present study examined this issue in a clinic sample of children with anxiety disorders (aged 6-16). Because past research has found that it is not divorce but the child’s perspective of marital conflict that is the crucial factor in examining negative outcomes, it was hypothesized that children who reported worry about marital conflict would show greater internalizing symptomatology than those who reported no worries, regardless of whether they came from intact or divorced homes. Internalized symptomatology was operationalized by children’s scores on anxiety and depression scales, as well as the number and severity of clinical diagnoses. Results revealed that worriers had significantly higher levels of anxiety than non-worriers. They were also elevated in depression. The results did not support the hypothesis that worriers from divorced homes would show the most severe internalizing symptomatology. Results are discussed in terms of the marital conflict and the childhood anxiety literature.

Abstract:

Marital status and sexual orientation discrimination has been largely under-researched and has not been researched using working professionals, or with the incorporation sexual orientation, marital status, and gender interactions. Past studies have found that marital status bias hiring decisions for men and women differently (Hammer, 1993; Jordan, College & Zitek, 2012; Renwick & Tosi,1978). Additionally, with the growing acceptance of gay (LGBT) relationships, marriages, and partnerships, the interaction of marital status (i.e., applicants with or without a spouse) and sexual orientation bias in the workplace needs to be examined. Our study examined the interview process testing for gender, marital status, and sexual orientation bias affecting simulations of hiring decisions. A significant three-way interaction was found such that single lesbian women received significantly higher ratings when compared to married lesbian women, and heterosexual women received significantly higher ratings when married in comparison to when they were single. The study revealed that sexual orientation interacted with marital status in women's ratings but not for men. This research updates current knowledge about discrimination in employment settings and provides updated information on a topic where the existing research has been largely outdated and under-researched.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investiate the relationship between marital satisfaction and adherence to dysfunctional beliefs concerning the marital relationship among married couples in their twenties and retired married couples 65 years of age and older. Additionally, adherence to socially desirable response sets was also measured.Marital satisfaction among older couples was significantly higher than that of younger couples (p < .001). Older men demonstrated significantly greater adherence to dysfunctional beliefs about marriage than younger men (p < .01), while these beliefs were not significantly different for older and younger women. Older couples also demonstrated significantly greater adherence to socially desirable response sets than younger couples (p < .001 for women and p < .01 for men).Increased marital satisfaction was significantly correlated with decreased adherence to dysfunctional beliefs for all subjects (p < .001 for older women and p < .01 for all others) and with greater social desirability responding for all subjects except younger women (p < .01). Level of marital satisfaction among older couples was most influenced by that of one's spouse, while the satisfaction of younger couples was most affected by one's adherence to the belief that disagreement is destructive to the marriage.

Miles, Claire J. "Marital conflict, parent-child relations and children's psychological adjustment : a longitudinal investigation into the role of parental warmth and hostility." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2005. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55632/.

Full text
Abstract:
The corpus of research presented in this thesis applies a process-oriented perspective to understanding the interplay between marital conflict, parent-child relations and children's adjustment Specifically, this thesis focuses on the conceptually important question concerning the relative impact of parent-child warmth versus hostility on children's appraisals of the interparental and parent-child relationship, and how children's appraisals mediate the influence of parent-child relations on children's adjustment in the context of a discordant interparental relationship. Using data from a sample of over 500 children, parents and teachers living in the United Kingdom, a set of interlocking studies were conducted. First, two studies addressed the direction of effects between marital conflict and parent-child warmth and hostility, and between parent-child warmth and hostility and children's internalising symptoms and externalising problems. In addition, differences according to parent and child gender, and parent and child reports of interparental and parent-child relations were identified. This provided a necessary first step to confirm the orienting influence of marital conflict on the quality of parent-child relations, and to identify the influence of parent-child relations on children's adjustment, whilst also considering the theoretically plausible alternative that children's behaviour influences parents' expressions of warmth and hostility within parent-child relations, which, in turn, may influence the level of interparental conflict. Following on from this, a third study examined the mediating role of parent-child warmth and hostility in accounting for the relationship between interparental conflict and children's long-term internalising symptoms and externalising problems. This study examined the relative influence of parental hostile and rejecting behaviour versus warm and responsive behaviour on children's adjustment considered in the context of marital conflict. Finally, an integrative model examined whether the affective quality of parent-child relations determines children's appraisals of parent-child insecurity and children's perceptions of threat and self-blame derived from exposure to interparental conflict, and in turn, how these appraisals of marital and parent-child relations determine changes in children's symptoms of psychological and behavioural distress. Collectively, the studies contained within this thesis are among the very first to systematically consider the direction of effects between interparental conflict, parent- child warmth and hostility and children's adjustment and serve as a primer for researchers interested in factors that may reduce children's maladjustment in response to a discordant marital relationship.

Abstract:
This research proposes a reflection on the establishment of passionate feeling, from which rise up to the couple, having as main and specific focus women who choose as lover a man in the condition of prisoner. A theoretical study is done through the reading of psychoanalytic texts, especially of Freud and other authors from Psychoanalysis and complementary areas such as Sociology. The choice of object, the projective idealization and narcissism as the basis of intrapsychic are relevant concepts for addressing some of the mechanisms involved in this kind of relationship. Five female volunteers will be analyzed (from semi-directed interviews) that fit the purpose of this study, pre-selected in a survey study conducted in the input queue to visit three Provisional Detention Centers (CDP) of the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The idealization is seen as the prerogative to choose and maintain the loving relationship in question. Factors such as the condition of fellow inmate, conjugal visits, preparations for the meeting, the absence of the partner in everyday life, women\'s caring personality, the character of the law-braker man delineate some of the vicissitudes of marital dynamics established, expressing thus, a peculiar context of the universe that involves a choice of love so specific

Abstract:
This study investigated the development of the marital and the coparental relationships during the transition to parenthood, in couples who conceived trough assisted reproduction techniques. A collective longitudinal case study was carried out. Three couples answered individual semi-structured interviews during three moments: (a) pregnancy, (b) after baby’s third month, and (c) after baby’s first year. The data were submitted to a narrative analysis, which focused both the particularities of each couple and the similarities between them. It has been identified a process in which couples’ relationships became more differentiated and divided into marital and coparental relationships. It is proposed that in couples who conceive through assisted reproduction, the treatment should be considered as a milestone of coparenthood beginning. It is also highlighted the need to consider the couple’s history, their infertility and treatment experience, the relationships with their families of origin, and their family form to understand this relationship development process.

Abstract:
This work aimed to analyze how marital conflict runs in families. A systematic review about the spillover effect was performed in national and international literature of the last 10 years. The results showed the consequences of constructive and destructive conflicts to couples and their offspring. It also points out the dearth of Brazilian publication in that area. Following, an empirical study was done with 179 families. The reports of children and couples about their disagreements and their behavior in these occasions were analyzed by Conflict resolution styles inventory, Children's perception of interparental conflict and Children's action tendency scale. Results showed that children identify disagreements between their parents and that this has an impact on their feelings and attitudes towards life. There was an association between the conflict resolution strategies of couples and children. The possibilities of work in this context were discussed, given the importance of the theme to family health.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to comprehend the impact of the condition of autistic children on family life and the conjugal relationship of the parents. We also explore the use of the clinical, non-directed interview, following the model of therapeutic consultation. We use data from medical records as an additional resource to obtain information about the child and its parents. Five couples (ten participants), parents of autistic children, whose child had recently been diagnosed and had commenced activities in an educational institution for specialist educational treatment, located in a municipality in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, participated in this study. The inclusion criterion was the participation of both members of the couple in the interviews. This was a clinical-qualitative study in which psychoanalysis was the theory of reference, especially the approach of Donald W. Winnicott. In addition, we rely on studies of psychoanalysis of families and of couples for the analysis of the clinical material. The detailed study of the interviews prompted reflections on three core themes that emerged: parenting and the space occupied by children in family dynamics; the interface between parenthood and the conjugal relationship; the interview as a holding space for parents on the experience of suffering. According to the narratives of the couples, the results indicated that fathers and mothers were affected by the childrens problem and the conjugal relationship has been superseded by the urgent need to care for the autistic child. Feelings of powerlessness in the face to the precariousness of Health Services, in both material and human terms, emerged. It was observed that, as the discovery of the diagnosis was recent a lot of anguish has arisen, principally for mothers, in relation to institutional treatment. Among them were the uncertainties about the service, the issue of medication and of school inclusion. The recognition of the child\'s condition altered the self-esteem of parents causing them to oscillate between moments of belief and disbelief in the face of the development of the child, predominantly ambivalent feelings of helplessness and hope. Each couple used the setting proposed in a singular and unique way, according to their needs. We perceived that the interview situation favored the creation of a demand that was latent and this was taken as a listening and holding space for the parents. A feeling of urgency prevailed concerning the autistic child, who took the place of the conjugal relationship and the care of other children, when they existed. Given the complexity of the situations and the variety of emerging themes, we found that some couples might question the creation of the child, however, reveal little about the type of conjugal relationship construction. We believe that the model of therapeutic consultation represents a comprehensive and flexible proposal for the assistance of parents which can help to alleviate their anguish. We advocate that this method can serve as a means of care for mental health in the services related to the issue in question

Abstract:
This thesis is an ethnography of Bugis marriage. It is concerned with aspects of gender, sexuality and marriage in a bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. ¶ I examine the fundamental concept of siri’ in relation to gender socialisation, courtship, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, how sexuality is regulated between the sexes, sex within marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. The analysis considers how Islam combines with local custom (adat) in everyday practices, and how Bugis cultural specificities are affected within the national ideology of contemporary Indonesia. ¶ This ethnography explores an interpretation of Bugis social and sexual experience through examination of the construction of gender identities and how they are manifested in marriage. The thesis explores the complementarity of gender for the Bugis. Despite the ideal of feminine passivity, I demonstrate that women exercise agency in a number of circumstances, including how they manage the sexuality of their husbands, defending siri’, the arrangement of marriage, remarrying, money management, divorce, and violent situations. I also examine the practices of illegal marriage (kawin liar) and illegal divorce (cerai liar) at local and personal levels. I analyse local and national debates on the legitimation of what is popularly known in Indonesia as ‘marriage based on religion’ (nikah secara agama) as part of the examination of Bugis marriage and marital relations. ¶ My thesis contributes to the understanding of Bugis notions of sexuality, gender and social location, and how these interact with siri’. I explore how and why violence occurs within marriage. I use a combination of informal interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions as well textual analysis of traditional manuscripts and incorporation of oral traditions.

Abstract:
The general purpose of this research was to identify any possible relationships between Robert Steinberg\'s \"Love Stories\" and couple satisfaction. 50 heterosexual couples, married or consensually living together, constituted the sample. Research specific objectives were: to identify \"Love Stories\" which were considered the most adequate to predict couple satisfaction; to verify if there were any similarities between men and women \"Love Stories\" and between those to which they either identify themselves or would like to reply on their own lives; to verify if there was any relationship between the wish of living a specific \"Love Story\" and the person\'s own \"real story\". Main findings were that the \"Love Stories\" of which the scripts were more socially adequate were those which were identified as having more positive prediction power, while those the scripts of which were socially inadequate according to the couples\' current cultural patterns were those which were considered as presenting negative prediction power for couple satisfaction. Couples presented similarities on relation to \"Love Stories\" they identify to with either more or less intensity and in average they were satisfied with the \"real living stories\" of their couple relationships.

This dissertation aimed to investigate the interactions between parenting practices, parent-child conflict and the perception of interparental conflict on Internet addiction in young people. We conducted a descriptive exploratory study of quantitative and transversal character. The sample consisted of 200 young Brazilians between 15 and 24 years of age. Participants responded individually to the protocol available online, consisting of a questionnaire about socio-demographic data and the use of the internet, the Escala de Conflito Pais-filho (Parent-Child Conflict Scale), the Escala de Práticas Parentais (Parental Practices Scale), the Childrens' Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, the Internet Addiction Test and the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire. This dissertation is organized as two empirical articles, and the titles are: "Family conflicts and parenting practices as predictors of Internet addiction in young people" and "discriminant Profile of young internet dependents: the role of family relationships." Results confirm international studies on the impact of family relationships on Internet addiction and indicate that the investigated variables have considerable weight and role on Internet addiction in young people, considering that this is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon.

Abstract:
This descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship between the measure of parental conjugality as perceived and experienced by children, the levels of subjective well-being and the satisfaction in romantic relationships displayed by these children, as well the variation of this relationship as a function of marital status of children (married, single and dating and singles who do not date). It was selected a convenient sample comprised by three independent groups: (1) two-year-old married people (Group A, N = 118, mean age 41.55, SD = 10.01); (2) single people who have dated over at least one year (Group B, N = 140, mean age 21.99, SD = 3.16); and (3) single people who had not been in a relationship since one year earlier (Group C, N = 116, mean age 21.52 , SD = 4.25). The total sample was non-probabilistic, summing 374 subjects. The following instruments were applied: Questionnaire for the Identification of Participant including a general question of satisfaction in current relationship (SR); Abipeme Criterion; Scale of Subjective Well-being (EBES) to assess positive affect (AP), negative affect (AN), satisfaction with life (SV) and well-being (BES); Satisfaction with Couple Relationships Factorial Scale (EFS-RC), which evaluates satisfaction in relation to physical attraction and sexuality (SAFS) and satisfaction with common interests and behaviors (SAIC) and the Parental Questionnaire Conjugality (QCP). The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 17.0 for Windows. After applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, it was run a statistical non-parametric correlation analysis (Spearman). The data were normalized for comparison between groups (ANOVA and ANCOVA) and multiple regression analyzes (stepwise method), considering the variables of satisfaction in the relationship (SR, SAFS, SAIC), along with subjective well-being (AP, AN, SV and BES) as dependent variables. The significance level was p < 0.05. In the total sample, the perception of parents\' marital (PCP) was significantly correlated with the SAFS (rho = .20; p < .001) and among married, with SAIC (rho = .22; p = .017), although associations are considered weak. For the group singles who date, no significant correlations with the PCP were found. The PCP was one of the predictors 22 Fabio Scorsolini-Comin of SAFS, SAIC, AP, AN, SV and BES, not rejecting hypotheses 1 and 3 of the study, according to which the PCP was correlated to the satisfaction of the children in their love relationships (H1) and their well-being (H3). The variables of satisfaction in the relationship are factors associated with the BES, not rejecting the hypothesis 2. The average levels of PCP were significantly different between single and married, not rejecting the hypothesis 4. Considering the age differences between groups and to control the possible effects of this variable, it was performed an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), considering age as a covariate. This analysis allowed to better understanding the role of the age variable in the PCP and the results support the interpretation that age would be a powerful developmental variable, which redeem accumulated experiences throughout life. It is suggested that additional studies should be conducted to support this initial conclusion. Married participants have considered parents\' marriage more negatively compared to single participants, possibly by evaluating in a less idealized way besides a more mature judgment of the parental relationship. It was concluded that perception of parental conjugality, as one of the variables that explain the subjective well-being as well as satisfaction in romantic relationships of their children, is a phenomenon that should be associated with marital quality and the establishment of positive interpersonal relationship, which could be a landmark for future research and intervention practices with couples.

Researchers have studied about the interface of religion in weddings, identifying that religious affiliation may be an important factor in the marital relationship. The purpose of this dissertation was to raise the elements that would promote discuss issues of marital satisfaction and conflict among married people and evangelical in order to obtain material for guidance and development of quality programs for married life. For this we used questionnaires to obtain information on participants, such as demographics (age, gender, financial and others), past behaviors and predicting future behavior, according to the personal beliefs of each participant, using also theMarital Adjustment Scale of Spanier (DSS - Dyadic Satisfaction Scale, 1976). The sample comprised 35 participants, 16 men and 19 women, mean age 36.80 years, with average deviation of 10.253, while 9 were followers of the neo- Pentecostal, 10 and 16 traditional church of the Pentecostal church, being subdivided into groups in relation to marital satisfaction. We work with the theme of marital satisfaction as the key as the present work, corroborated with the most points already stated in previous research, with emphasis on gender relations as a variable differential marital, surprising the greater number of women satisfied with respect tomen, the influence of religion can be seen in relation to paternal identification models, acting as a support network and training for moral and ethical values. The kinds of conflict and ways of facing the evangelical sample is similar to that of couples, regardless of religious variable

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of communication variables and parent marital variables with the fulfillment of marital expectations among newlyweds. Little research has been done on newlywed expectations and communication. This is an exploratory study conducted to determine how newlyweds' exposure to parents' marital interactions and communication styles correlated with newlyweds' fulfillment of marital expectations. Fifty newlywed couples (married 3-6 months) filled out the Marital Comparison Level Index (MCLI) questionnaire about their level of fulfillment of expectations. Couples were then videotaped talking to one another about the strengths of their marriage followed by a discussion of the potential weaknesses of their relationship. Those videotapes were then coded using the Marital Interaction Coding System--Global. The results indicate that parental marital variables had no significant association with newlywed children's level of fulfillment of expectations. The that was correlated with fulfillment of expectations was the wife's "withdrawal" behavior during the conversation about dissimilarities and weaknesses. The lack of relation with the other variables may have been masked by high levels of satisfaction in the first year of marriage and the homogeneous sample (age and religion).

Little information is available on the use of relational aggression in adult romantic relationships. In a sample of 325 married couples (650 spouses) we assessed the use of relational aggression within couples married an average of approximately 18 years to learn more about relational aggression within this population. To understand a potential motivating factor for the use of relational aggression, marital power was also examined. Finally, to learn whether or not relationship satisfaction mediates the relationship between marital power and relational aggression, relationship satisfaction was measured and was found to be a significant mediating variable. Using the actor/partner interdependence model, we found that those who were dissatisfied in their relationships, regardless of perceived marital power, were more likely to use relational aggression. Additionally, those who were satisfied in their marriage were less likely to use relational aggression. Wives participated in more relational aggression than husbands and husbands perceived themselves as having more power and were more satisfied in the marriage. Implications and suggestions for clinicians are offered.
