Abstract:
The study focused on elements discussed during pre-marital counselling and how those elements mediate on the sustainability of marriages in Greater Accra Region. Concurrent triangulation mixed method design was chosen for the study. For the quantitative phase 100 marriage people were randomly selected from 10 churches. At the qualitative phase 4 head pastors were conveniently selected from the 10 churches. Mean and standard deviation was used to analysed the questionnaire for the quantitative phase while the semi-structured interview scheduled was thematically analysed to explain issues as they emerged in the study. The study showed conflict resolution, communication, adjusting to individual difference, sex and romance, family lifecycles in marriage and separation from past-memories and families were some elements discussed during pre-marital counselling to help sustain the marriages. Again, respondents were of the view that pre-marital counselling is vital for the sustainability of marriages and should be made compulsory for new couples. Lastly, it was revealed the philosophy of pre-marital counselling is not only being aware of potential land mines in their relationship, but to equip married people to learn the skills necessary to successfully deal with challenges throughout their marriage which help in the sustainability. Therefore, it was recommended that the churches should employ professional counsellors who understand the principle of marriage counselling to perform the act of counselling and follow-up service should be done to check if the elements discussed during pre-marital counselling are being put into practice.

Abstract:
This paper makes a contribution to the still relatively undeveloped literature on the sociology of counselling, using a detailed case study of one organisation. Styles of intervention are explored in the work of the National Marriage Guidance Council/Relate. The paper rejects a simple linear development model based on transitions from ‘guidance’, to ‘counselling’ to ‘therapy’ Influences deriving from Rogerian models of counselling, from psychodynamic and behavioural theory are explored and are placed in the context of wider organisational factors. Attention is given to the varying fortunes of the medical model within Marriage Guidance. The paper concludes with an examination of the contradictions thrown up by recent attempts to develop an eclectic model of marital counselling, which appear to founder on the absence of any clearly defined goals for intervention.

Abstract:
Four married couples were recruited from an outpatient alcohol counselling centre. Four husbands and one wife had recently received therapy for alcoholism and all but one was abstinent during the study. All scored as distressed on the Marital Adjustment Test. They participated in ten sessions of behavioural marital therapy emphasising positive reinforcement, communication, expression of feelings and problem solving. Problem solving discussions were audio-recorded at each session and analysed using a behaviour code. Measures of marital satisfaction, conflict and depression showed modest gains which were generally maintained at follow-up. Communication skills improved most with training, problem solving less so and feelings expression declined below baseline levels. These changes did not appear to be very durable. The non-abstinent client reduced his drinking to a level satisfactory to his wife during therapy. These findings support other recent work, draw attention to the need to find ways of promoting the maintenance and transfer of therapeutic changes and suggest that behavioural marital therapy may usefully be employed in outpatient alcohol counselling settings.

Abstract:
Marriages in Ghana are usually preceded by counseling. It is believed that premarital counseling helps to sustain marriages because it gives couples the initial skills needed to enable them to start their marriage and solve minor problems that may be encountered in the relationship. This study was aimed at assessing the significance of premarital counseling to the sustenance of marriage. The study adopted a mixed methodological approach in gathering the data. Data was gathered from 112 individuals from three different suburbs of the capital city of Ghana. The results showed that although pre-marital counseling was observed to be important for would-be couples, it does not help sustain all marriages. Married couples that were given pre-marital counseling were getting separated as well as those who never had pre-marital counseling. It is therefore recommended that although premarital counseling may be necessary, it is not sufficient to sustain marriages. Therefore, counseling should continue even after marriage.

Abstract:
Botswana has a long history of indigenous marital therapy. This indigenous therapy is embodied in the indigenous philosophy of motho ke motho ka batho (I am because we are). This philosophy promotes togetherness, connectedness, collectiveness, compassion, love and harmony and the building of sustainable relationships among families. The paper explores some of the indigenous therapeutic marital approaches used during wedding ceremonies amongst them, songs, proverbs and group counselling. It also argues that these indigenous marital approaches build family relations and are a continuous source of therapy for the married couple; in addition to relieving women from marital stress and maintaining strong family relationships even after the marriage has ended.

Abstract:
This study investigated the sources of marital stress among working class women in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study also examined the influence of age, type of marriage, and length of years in service on the respondents’ views. The study employed a descriptive survey method. A total of 422 working class women in Kwara State were selected from a population size of 7,237 through a multi-stage sampling procedure. The participants responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled ‘Sources of Marital Stress Questionnaire (SMSQ)’. The validity of the instrument was done by a team of experts (5) from the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin and the reliability was established using test re-test reliability method, which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.65. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that the sources of marital stress of working class women were sexual incompatibility with their spouses, financial constraints, in-laws’ interference, and religious differences among others. Results further indicated that there were significant differences in the sources of marital stress among working class women in Kwara State on the bases of age, type of marriage and length of years in marriage. In view of the findings of this study, it was concluded that the sources of marital stress among working class women were numerous. Recommendations were made that counsellors should assist working class women to cope with their sexual incompatibilities with their spouses through appropriate counseling services.

Abstract:
This study of 133 patients of both sexes on hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) focusses on the patient's viewpoint of their satisfaction with their sexual relationships, and asks whether this had changed since commencement of treatment. Patients also were asked about their marital satisfaction and their partner's feelings in relation to their sexual relationship. This study shows that about half the patients reported a significant deterioration in their satisfaction with sexual relationships since starting dialysis. This deterioration was significant regardless of age, sex or mode of treatment. Patients ex pressed concern about this deterioration and felt that their partners were similarly concerned. Patients aged less than 60 years and all patients on hemodialysis expressed significantly more concern than those over 60 and those on CAPD. Satisfaction with marriage was reported as good on dialysis and this response was not related to the reported sexual dysfunction on treatment. All members of the multidisciplinary renal team, especially the social worker, should ensure that dialysis patients and their partners have access to appropriate psychosexual counselling by a trained sex counsellor as part of the overall treatment and counselling of dialysis patients.

Abstract:
The paper deals with spousal rape, an act of violence with a high degree of social danger and the elements by which the perception of marital rape is determined by the social and cultural context, by the religious affiliation, by local traditions as well as by society’s mentality. The aim of the approach was to highlight the correlation between spousal rape and patterns of conduct induced by this phenomenon on the family level, resulting in consequences that affect the sexual freedom of the person, and restrict a person’s right to protection of psychic and mental health. The techniques used in the research applied were the counselling and semi-structured interview, applied between September and December 2020, to a number of 13 women who experienced incidents of rape by their partner. Thus, we can consider that this particularly serious phenomenon induces major damage to the personality of the victim, who may suffer from depressive disorder, sex life troubles, sleep deprivation, addictive disorders and eating disorder.

Abstract:
Marital dissatisfaction is the most important issue in marital life which has the highest effect on the stability and failure of couples’ lives. Therefore, this study explored the efficacy of Emotionally Focused Therapy and religiosity on marital dissatisfaction among newly married teachers in Ibadan, Oyo State. Pretest-posttest, control group quasi-experimental design with a 2x2 factorial matrix was used in the study. Simple random sampling technique was used in sampling 80 participants from 4 local government areas in the state. The respondents were measured with validated marital dissatisfaction scale with a reliability coefficient of .87 and the data obtained was analysed using t-test statistical analysis. The result showed that there was a significant difference in marital dissatisfaction among newly married teachers exposed to emotionally focused therapy and those in the control group and newly married teachers with high religiosity and those with low religiosity. In view of these findings, the study recommended that counselling psychologists should intensify their effort to organize conferences on the implications of emotionally focused therapy and religiosity as effective interventions towards reducing marital dissatisfaction.

Abstract:
This study identifies the relationship between attachment insecurities; Attachment Avoidance and Attachment Anxiety, and Marital Satisfaction; Dyadic Cohesion, Dyadic Satisfaction, Dyadic Consensus, and Dyadic Affectional Expression among married couples. A correlational research design was adopted in this study to address the objectives of the research. Seventy respondents among married couples in West Peninsular of Malaysia were selected to participate in this research. Two sets of questionnaires were developed and reviewed by two expert panels before piloting and distributing to the participants. The structure and content of the questionnaires were specific to main two areas; Experience in Close Relationship (ECR) and Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). The data was collected and analysed using SPSS descriptive statistic and Pearson correlation. The findings indicated that there was a significant relationship between attachment insecurities and marital satisfaction. Furthermore, it is recommended based on the results that community counsellors’ conduct group counselling sessions to facilitate married couples’ understanding of attachment insecurities which will help to enhance the satisfaction in their marital relationships. It is also recommended based on the work performed, limitations and findings in this study that further research is conducted to conduct a similar research program, with a broader and more substantial population size covering multiple communities, again with a specific focus on married couples and to improve their marital satisfaction with their relationships.

This study investigated the influence of spousal communication on marital conflict resolution as expressed by married adults in the Ilorin metropolis. The research design adopted for the study was a descriptive design. A stratified sampling technique was employed to select 210 respondents. The main instrument used for the study was a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled “Influence of Spousal Communication on Marital Conflict Resolution Questionnaire (ISCMCRQ)”. The instrument was validated by experts in counseling and also yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.88 after a test re-test reliability method. One research question was raised and three hypotheses were postulated and tested. An analysis of Variance and t-test were employed to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. Findings revealed that communication in marriage has a positive influence on marital conflict resolution. Findings also revealed that communication helps to resolve marital conflict if there is effective communication among couples and enhanced respect for each other. Ineffective communication between spouses leads to perceptive error. There were no significant differences in the influence of spousal communication style on marital conflict resolution as expressed by married adults in the Ilorin metropolis based on gender, age and educational qualification. It was therefore recommended that married adults should be encouraged to pay attention to the non-verbal communication aspects of their relationships.

Abstract:
This study explored the psychosocial impact of traumatic brain injury on the perceived quality of life of a purposefully selected group of 14 spouses/partners of head injured persons by means of a self-administered questionnaire. Analysis of responses revealed that spouses/partners' altered communication patterns were perceived to have affected interpersonal relationships and quality of life extensively, indicating the need for speech-language therapy. Decreased income was noted due to the low incidence of return to work. Participants reported changes in family relationships, particularly between the injured person and their children as well as deterioration in marital relationships; suggesting the necessity for family therapy and marital counselling. Various emotional reactions were documented in response to injury. Yet most respondents expressed acceptance of their new roles and responsibilities despite the difficulties entailed. Since injured persons were dependent on their spouses/partners to a large' extent, most of the latter reported feeling tied down. Abstract:
This paper scrutinises the relations between different models of family planning advice and their evolution in Poland between the mid-1950s and the late 1980s, focusing on their similarities and dissimilarities, conflicts and concordances. From 1956 onwards, the delivery of family planning advice became a priority for both the Polish Catholic Church and the party-state, especially its health authorities, which supported the foundation of the Society of Conscious Motherhood and aspired to mainstream birth control advice through the network of public well-woman clinics. As a consequence, two systems of family planning counselling emerged: the professional, secular family planning movement and Catholic pre-marital and marital counselling. We argue that reciprocal influence and emulation existed between state-sponsored and Catholic family planning in state-socialist Poland, and that both models used transnational organisations and debates relating to contraception for their construction and legitimisation. By evaluating the extent to which the strategies and practices for the delivery of birth control advice utilised by transnational birth control movements were employed in a ‘second world’ context such as Poland, we reveal unexpected supranational links that complicate and problematise historiographical and popular understandings of the Iron Curtain and Cold War Europe.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to understand the phenomenon of a satisfying marriage among Malay married couples in Malaysia. It is submitted that a happy marriage starts from the feeling of satisfaction felt by married couples. However, with the rising statistics of marital problems and divorce cases reported in Malaysia, the phenomenon of satisfaction among married couples, the factors that contribute to it, as well as the challenges and ways to overcome them, need to be understood. The research employed a qualitative phenomenological method of enquiry. Two married couples, consisting of two males and two females, were selected as participants for in-depth one-on-one interviews. They were of different couple profiles, age groups and lengths of marriage that fit into the intended selection criteria. In this study, a satisfying marriage was described through the feelings of peace, tranquillity and calmness, the happiness of family members, the positive feelings felt from the presence of family, the sense of togetherness, strength and support as well as the grateful feeling of having a spouse with commendable attributes. With regard to the factors that contribute to marital satisfaction, four major themes and eight subthemes were identified. The four major themes were “Attitudes and Actions of Spouse”, “Relationship with Others”, “Finance and Career” and “Religion”. The subthemes that emerged from “Attitudes and Actions of Spouse” included “Complementary Roles”, “Respect and Tolerance”, “Physical Intimacy, Bonding and Fulfilment”, “Understanding and Trust”, “Communication,” and “Humor.” Meanwhile, the subthemes that emerged from “Relationship with Others” were “Relationship with Children” and “Relationship with In-Laws and Relatives.” Two major themes emerged in regard to the challenges in achieving a satisfying marriage, which were “Attitude of Couples” and “External Factors.” There are three main highlights in the findings of this study, namely “peace” as an important element in a satisfying marriage, the role of religion in a satisfying marriage, and the existence of gender differences in needs and expectations in a marriage. This study is hoped to be a significant endeavor in creating an awareness on the subject of marital satisfaction in Malaysia. It has implications for education, marriage and family counselling, as well as personal growth, and could serve as a basis for further efforts to promote a more satisfying marital institution. Abstract:
This paper looks at the journey of eleven counsellors in marital counselling centres in French-speaking Belgium, from the creation of the centres in 1953, to the 1970s, when contraception became legal, and abortion became a public issue. At the time of Humanae Vitae, groups of volunteers, working within Catholic organisations where counselling took place, began to structure their activity around Carl Rogers’s ethics of client-centred therapy, placing their religious ideology in a secondary position to focus on the problems experienced by the couples and women they were receiving in the centres. These were often challenges they were experiencing themselves in their own lives. The reiteration of the Catholic orthodox view on contraception through Humanae Vitae marked a gap between the counsellors and the Church. This contribution questions the identity-related tension of Catholics working in conjugal counselling centres and the type of commitments they made to both the conjugal centres and the Church in a moment where family planning was debated both in the Church and politically.

Abstract:
Abstract. Smartphones and the internet have indeed revolutionized our lives in innumerable ways, among them the emergence of a social phenomenon called ‘phubbing.’ Phubbing is a portmanteau combining the words “phone” and “snubbing”. A person engaging in “phubbing” interacts obsessively with his/her phone rather than communicating with nearby people. Partner phubbing (Pphubbing) is defined as phubbing behaviour when in the presence of one’s spouse or significant other. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between Pphubbing and marital quality, and to investigate the moderating role of gender and age in this relationship. The participants in the survey were 390 married adults living in Kuala Lumpur. The respondents were selected randomly and volunteered to answer a series of questionnaires made up of the Partner Phubbing Scale, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and a section on demographic data. Results showed that Pphubbing behaviour has a significant negative relationship with marital quality. Moreover, gender and age were found to have significant moderating effects on the relationship between Pphubbing and marital quality. The reported impact of Pphubbing on marital quality was stronger among females than males, and the effects were also stronger among younger adults. These findings may have implications for family and couple counselling and for the coaching profession. Future research should be done to address this phenomenon more thoroughly. Abstract:
Background/Aims Obstetric fistula is a serious birthing injury with medicosocial consequences including infertility and marital disharmony. Obstetric fistula has been eliminated in developed countries but remains highly prevalent in Africa and Asia. The aim of this study was to identify and analyse the marital experiences of women with obstetric fistula in order to guide interventions to help women cope with their situation, as well as improving partner support towards women living with this condition. Methods A range of electronic databases were searched for studies conducted worldwide, published between 2003 and 2018. English language publications were searched for using relevant keywords. Three main themes were identified based on the content of the interview questions and the respondents' views and experiences, and how these related to the study objectives. Results A total of 33 studies were included. Three main themes in the marital experiences of women with obstetric fistulas were identified: ‘loss of marriage’ (n=25), ‘marital and sexual life is no longer joyful’ (n=17), and ‘partner support’ (n=22). Conclusions Obstetric fistula can have significant impacts on a woman and her partner. Healthcare professionals should be aware of these concerns and surgical repair should be encouraged. Counselling should be provided for women with obstetric fistula and their partners.

Abstract:
Violence against women is one of the main social problems worldwide. Marital rape and its recognition are discussed as a new boundary mark because of greater social sensitivity on violence. From an intercultural social work perspective, it is highly relevant to learn more about perceptions of different kinds of violence in order to plan adequate interventions. The article presents findings from expert interviews related to the perception and the intervention structure contextualised by the discourse on marital rape in India. It concludes six main implications for intercultural social work. The main finding (6) states that in all of these settings, the role of the family system should not be underestimated, and whenever possible couple counselling should be considered. Viewed against the background of the highly individualised Swiss society, this is a finding, which needs to be taken into careful account in Swiss intercultural social work.

Abstract:
A study of 375 antenatal attendees to assess women's views and experience in sexual matters during pregnancy and following childbirth. Explanatory variables included the perception women had of sex during pregnancy and after childbirth. Outcome variables were frequency and satisfaction of sexual activity. The commonest reasons for having coitus in pregnancy were marital harmony and facilitation of delivery. Libido rose throughout pregnancy but orgasms were less often experienced. The man-on-top position became less practised. Vaginal intercourse remained the commonest type. Masturbation and anal intercourse increased, while oral sex declined throughout. Marriage (OR 9.0, 95% CI 1.0–79.5) and current cohabitation (OR 13.6, 95% CI 1.6–113.4) were predictors of sex in pregnancy. Dyspareunia and partners' extramarital affairs were deterrent. Vaginal delivery and episiotomy were not significant predictors of postnatal sex. The respondents and their partners seem able to adapt to pregnancy changes and enhance their marital bonds. Anticipatory guidance and informed counselling may encourage this.
