Abstract:
Des English was a person of great charm, innovation, and inner strength. His early death at the age of 44 in 1977 came as a bitter blow not only for his family but for the many teachers and parents he had influenced and guided in respectively providing and in seeking educational opportunities for children with disabilities. Des grew up in a small town in Victoria called Donnybrook, north of Melbourne. He was educated by the Marist Brothers at Kilmore College, and in the 50’s trained as a primary teacher at Geelong Teachers College, from which he gained an extension of one year to study as a Special Teacher at Melbourne Teachers College. His first appointment was as an Opportunity Grade teacher at North Melbourne State School. His talent for leadership surfaced early and in his second appointment he became Principal of Footscray Special School for children and adolescents with intellectual disability. Throughout the rest of his career he gained one promotion after another to the Principal positions at Ormond, Travencore and St. Alban’s Special schools. I was fortunate to work as a deputy principal with him throughout his last two appointments.

PurposeThe study aims to identify and recommend to the Marist International University College (MIUC) technologies that enhance knowledge management, with a particular focus on collaborative and distributed learning.Design/methodology/approachNine senior full-time academic staff members were purposively selected for the study. The study employed a qualitative research design that involved the use of Google forms to conduct an online survey to collect data from the target population, and it achieved a 100% response rate. Using content analysis, data were analysed, interpreted and presented in a mini-dissertation.FindingsThis research paper presents the findings relating to the innovative use of technologies to enhance collaborative and distributive learning. The findings confirm the existence of informal knowledge management practices at the MIUC and recommend technologies established through a review of the literature to expedite these practices.Practical implicationsThe proposed technologies are thought to be useful in enhancing collaborative and distributed learning in academic institutions as technologies act as enablers in knowledge management within academia.Originality/valueAs technologies continue to emerge, there is a chance for universities to hit a stalemate in terms of identifying appropriate technologies to enable knowledge management. This paper contributes by identifying not only KM practices at the university under study but also specific multimedia, social media, media sharing and brainstorming technologies from the literature that would be ideal in enhancing collaborative and distributed learning.

With the in-depth development of reform and opening-up and the explosive development of the Internet, the ideology and values of western capitalism have poured into colleges and universities. College students, as the most active group in the Internet, have been affected by the impact of different values and ideologies, and their identification with Marxist ideology is weakening, which makes the Marxist ideology in Colleges and universities face the risk of “Marginalization”.

Under the background of the new media era, teenagers, especially college students, have pushed the new media to a blowout development trend. This provides opportunities and challenges for the development of Ideological and political education in Colleges and universities. Inter subjectivity ideological and political education is the frontier issue in the discipline of Ideological and political education, which embodies the Marxist theory of subject human and the Marxist concept of communication practice. In the era of new media, the research on the ideological and political education among the main bodies of colleges and universities is a reasonable choice to conform to the trend of the times. Ideological and political education in Colleges and universities can be effectively developed on the platform of new media.

Abstract:
Karl Marx’s revolutionary call, ‘Workers of the World Unite’, resonates with many in today’s society. This article describes and assesses an easily reproducible classroom activity that simulates both alienating, and perhaps more importantly, non-alienating states of production as described by Marx. This hands-on learning activity gives students the opportunity to experience and process these divergent states. In reflecting, students connect their classroom experience to societal forces surrounding wage labour. A quasi-experimental design implemented across eight sociology classes at two U.S. university campuses – one two-year and one four-year college – points to the effectiveness of the activity. Evidence suggests that students are better able to grasp Marx’s theory of alienation, retain the knowledge over time and apply it to their own lives with this experiential learning activity.

Abstract:
Information technologies have become relevant enablers in knowledge management (KM) initiatives in academic institutions. A previous study by Anduvare (2015) revealed that the Marist International University College, Nairobi - Kenya had not adequately adopted information technologies into KM practices entwined in teaching, learning and research. This research study, therefore, set out to explore technologies that are capable of supporting KM practices in academic institutions in order to recommend some to the MIUC. Purposive sampling was used to select the MIUC full-time academic staff members as the target population as the researcher believed that they actively use knowledge at the MIUC and hence, would be in a position to understand the extent of information technology usage in KM practices. The study employed a qualitative research design that involved the use of Google forms to conduct an online survey in order to collect data from the target population. The study achieved a 100% response rate. Content analysis was utilised to analyse the data during which data within the specified themes (collaborative and distributive learning; knowledge discovery; knowledge mapping and knowledge application) was scrutinised for meaning. The data was then interpreted, presented and discussed based on the research sub-questions set for the study. The findings of the study confirmed the existence of KM practices at the MIUC. The study, thus, recommended some information technologies that support the KM practices to the MIUC which had been established through a review of literature.

Abstract:
The amalagamation of St. Mary's College and St. Joseph's High School, Lismore was a process that began in 1965 when a decision was made to combine Senior classes for the first Higher School Certificate curriculum. There was no thought of amalgamation in 1965 but the decision made then lead to the developments of 1977. Increasing enrolments and the need for a building programme set the scene for a merger of Junior classes and the introduction of coeducation throughout the schools. This process extended from 1977 to 1981. It was a period of conflict and resistance to change but it laid the foundation for the complete amalgamation of the schools to form Trinity Catholic College in 1985. The amalgamation process provides a study of decision-making in a Catholic school context. Changes in the Church, Catholic schools and Religious Orders are reflected in the changes in the way that decisions were made at the three key-points in the story. The study draws attention to the fact that in amalgamations of schools much of the planning is done in terms of the present schools rather than for the new school which is always twice as large and much more complex. The non-educational aspects of amalgamation are also considered because they are a time-consuming but important part of the planning. This study shows the importance of rituals in laying the old schools to rest so that the new school may come into being. A visible indication that things are different is essential when the students, staff and buildings remain as they had been. Since amalgamations are becoming more common as student numbers decline some lessons learned over the past twenty years are recorded so that others may benefit from them.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the impact of a headmaster upon a non-government school during the first years of his leadership. Theories of organizational change and leadership behaviour provide the theoretical framework for this investigation. The changes that were sought at Marist College, Pearce, have their origin in 1983 with the appointment of the fourth headmaster of that College. Prior to this time Marist College had developed a reputation for conservatism and strong leadership. The College had grown since its foundation into a comparatively large institution, both in terms of physical size, personnel and student enrolment. The new headmaster saw the need to review the goals of the College with the aim to better the pastoral care of the large student body. The result of this evaluation was the identification of a series of changes that would open the College to new approaches involving structural changes, devolution of authority and personalization of the College. The study identifies and documents the ideals hoped to be achieved by the headmaster. What were seen as ideals were not in ail cases practical. The difficulties and problems faced by him in the implementation of these changes are also examined. Headmasters' terms of office are limited resulting in new headmasters being appointed regularly. Each brings to that office his own style and ideals. The difficulties faced in the types of change analysed in this study may be common to organizations experiencing a change in leadership style.

Abstract:
There are many recognised forms of teacher professional development ranging from simply reflecting on a lesson recently taught to enrolling in a formal course at university. This study set out to examine the perceived effectiveness of one mode of professional development, a spaced learning activity(SLA). The SLA was selected for a number of reasons. Firstly, current government economic and industrial policy includes an emphasis on the training and retraining of the Australian workforce as an economic necessity. Within this policy, teacher professional development is considered to improve the quality of teaching and to raise professionalism. Secondly, the literature in the area suggests that professional development activities have the potential to improve the quality of teaching by enhancing teachers' knowledge and skills. Thirdly, an SLA appeared to incorporate many characteristics of effective professional development which are identified in the literature, for example, allowing time for critical reflection and for internalising concepts. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of an SLA as a training strategy and in enhancing teachers' knowledge, beliefs, classroom practice and students' learning outcomes and also to identify characteristics of an SLA which assisted and inhibited its effectiveness. Perceived costs and benefits of participation to the individual teacher were also evaluated.. The study was carried out at Marist College, Canberra , a Y7-12 single sex secondary school with an enrolment of approximately 1100 boys. The study involved twenty five teachers who participated voluntarily in a pilot collegial group programme at the school during 1993. The term "collegial group" is used for a small group of professionals who meet on a regular basis to learn together and to support one another in their on-going professional development. Adie (1988:4) explains that collegial groups are designed to assist in supporting, learning, problem solving, planning and performing. The twenty five volunteers were divided into three groups. Each group determined its own 'focus1 and met on an average of five occasions over six months, for meetings ranging from two to four hours. The foci selected by each group were: Increasing student motivation Increasing student responsibility for learning. Excellence in Teaching course. Meetings usually provided an opportunity for individual feedback on teaching changes tried, some input on the focus area, discussion of its practicality and a commitment to try something new and to report back at the next meeting. Some groups also included discussion of specific teaching and learning 'problems', where the group would offer solutions. A variety of data collection techniques were employed in the study. A questionnaire was conducted before the programme commenced to ascertain participants' expectations and concerns about the programme and anticipated effects of participation on their teaching knowledge, beliefs and practice and on their students' learning outcomes. A questionnaire was also administered at the end of the programme. The post-study questionnaire sought participants' perceptions about how well their expectations for the programme had been met, any differences participation had made to their teaching knowledge, beliefs and practice, and to their students' learning outcomes and whether these differences constituted improvements. Further questions covered: the benefits and costs to individuals of participation in the programme; the benefits participants perceived that other non-participatory colleagues could derive from a future programme; and the perceived value of the activity as a mode of professional development. The questionnaire also included a table covering organisational factors of the programme and elicited participants' responses about the degree to which each assisted and inhibited progress. In addition to the questionnaires, structured interviews were conducted with the participants after the completion of the programme asking similar questions about their perceptions of its success. Analysis of a variety of data collected through pre and post-programme questionnaires as well as interviews clearly indicates that this mode of delivery was perceived by the participants to be an effective form of professional development from the perspective of changing teaching knowledge, beliefs and practice, and as a refocussing or confirming activity by providing stimulus to an individual's professional development. Further data collected support the organisational characteristics of this SLA and provide some suggestions for changes. Finally, the findings clearly show that the benefits to individuals of participation are perceived to outweigh the costs, further supporting the effectiveness of this mode of professional development.

Abstract:
Scuba diving can't be offered to children and enter school without undergoing a real educational treatment, this is the aim of the piece of research which has been done in fesch secondary school. Scuba diving has always been considered as a risky activity, so much so that, the logic of this activity has been constructed about safety. The intuitive trend presents it in the form of techniques which must be mastered the synthetic trend which we follow, considers scuba diving as a safe activity which can be practised by all and which appeals to the whole person the diver needs a motor plasticity in order to adapt himself to an uncertain environment which is perpetually changing but doesn't need motor stereotypes when you dive, you venture into different aquatic spaces which are defined by depth and time. Thanks to a certain numbers of educational tricks, we give back to time all its importance in relation to depth. At school, diving means making a project of movement. The training stackes go through the development of autonomy, the mastery of rather risky situations and the mastery of making decisions. Finally in this educational processing, we can see a legitimate application taking shape for the commercial world which has always suffered too from this handicap which lies in presenting scuba diving as a dangerous activity

Traffichini, Andrea M. "Reconstruction of Northeastern Pacific Ocean Holocene Production Using Marine Mammal Archaeofauna." Thesis, NSUWorks, 2019. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/513.

Full text
Abstract:
Changes in marine production play a key role in determining the trophic structure of the northeastern Pacific Ocean. This is a region of great environmental fluctuations due to modern, historical, and paleo-environmental variability recorded throughout the Holocene. These fluctuations are recorded in the bone collagen of the marine mammals that reside in these waters. Marine mammal remains from four previously excavated archaeological deposits on Unalaska Island, Alaska are used as a proxy for marine production changes throughout the Holocene (4,500 BP to 350 BP). Historic and modern samples from museum collections, subsistence harvests, and previously published data provide a distinct contrast to prehistoric marine mammals. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) derived from marine mammal bone collagen correlate to changes in marine production and food web length. The 13C and 15N of prehistoric marine mammal taxa covary through the Holocene, indicating no trophic level change with fluctuations in 13C. Changes in δ13C and δ15N of marine mammals are correlated to periods of environmental fluctuations within the Holocene. Cooler climatic periods (transitional interval, beginning of the Neoglacial Interval, and Little Ice Age) show enrichedδ13C, reflecting primary production increase, compared to warmer climate periods (end of the Neoglacial Interval into the Medieval Climatic Anomaly). Unidentified cetacean bones are isotopically distinguishable into orders Mysticeti (baleen) and Odontoceti (toothed) due to different feeding ecologies. The δ13C depletion in modern pinnipeds compared to prehistoric is likely caused by the effect of increased anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 and resulting decrease in primary production.

Abstract:
SEPROSYS is a company specialized in the development of solutions for the extraction and separation of molecules. In 2011, the company has developed an innovative process of fractionated separation and purification of biomolecules from macroalgae. The purpose of this thesis work is to find applications for the purified fractions from the SEPROSYS® process and in particular the sulfated polysaccharides, for two distinct biological activities : as pharmaceutical for their anti-coagulant activity and as dermo-cosmetics for their anti-aging activity. The first part of our work focus on the potential of sulfated polysaccharides from macroalgae as anti-coagulant agents. To this end, aqueous extracts from brown, red and green macroalgae were prepared and their anti-coagulant activity was measured. The best macroalgae were then processed with the SEPROSYS procedure in order to purify the sulfated polysaccharides and study their activity. Furthermore, one of the objectives of this work was to acquire a better understanding of the structure/anti-coagulant function relationship of ulvans. Ulvans of high purity were extracted from Ulva sp. with the SEPROSYS® process, submitted to chemical (hypersulfatation) and physical (depolymerization) modifications and their anti-coagulant activity was measured. The second part of our work relates to the potential of the macroalgae as active agents to be used in dermo-cosmetics, and, in particular, for their anti-aging activity. Different brown, red and green macroalgae fractions were thus tested on normal human dermal fibroblasts cell lines and their effects on the collagen production were measured. Furthermore, the capacity of different molecular weight ulvans extracted from Ulva sp. to stimulate the collagen and hyaluronan biosynthesis was studied. To this end, we developed an efficient depolymerization procedure using ion exchange resins

Abstract:
Marist International University College, Nairobi – Kenya is challenged with problems like duplication of work due to lack of a central repository for knowledge, loss of knowledge through expertise leaving the institution without knowledge being captured and over reliance on a few known subject experts as others have not been identified. This research thus set out to address these problems. The aim of the study was to conduct a knowledge management assessment at the Marist International University College (MIUC) in order to identify and recommend a suitable strategy for the institution. The study employed a concurrent triangulation mixed methodology approach which encompassed a questionnaire and an interview schedule to collect data from 33 academic staff and 9 members of the MIUC management respectively. These two groups were purposively selected as the target population for the study as they play the key role in knowledge creation at MIUC. All 33 copies of the questionnaires that were distributed to the teaching staff were returned by respondents and all the 9 MIUC members of management were successfully interviewed. Data transformation analysis was applied during which qualitative data from open-ended questions and interviews were quantified using content analysis. Quantitative data in the questionnaires was descriptively analysed using SPSS. The study revealed a variety of informal knowledge management structures and resources at MIUC and the challenges of managing knowledge at Marist. The main challenge was that there was no uniformity and consistency in the management of knowledge. The study hence, formulated a KM strategy for MIUC that would help leverage its knowledge assets.

Abstract:
High school students rarely investigate underwater wrecks by boat using side scan sonar, sub bottom profilers, and magnetometers. Rarely do high school students have a chance to determine the shape, and design of a historic sailing vessel, as many vessels older than 200 years have already been discovered in US waters. Washington College not only enabled high school students to discover and identify a previously unknown wreck, but created a game to bring the technology into the high school classroom to interest students into becoming marine scientists, marine architects or marine engineers.
