The analysis will tend to high light the writer’s identitary quest through the writing of worksthat take on autobiographical or autofictional aspects. The study will echo a questioning that refers to a literary issue : what are the literary processes set up to go along with the writer’s search for identity? The analysis will particularly underline Margo Glantz’s specific use of fragmentation to give an account of her identity quest

Ambos os intelectuais lançam mão de uma extensa bibliografia e documentação onde propunham seus ideais musicais que tinham como uma das principais finalidades a emancipação cultural do brasileiro frente à Europa, para Mário, e a emancipação do cidadão americano, segundo Lange. Para tanto, os dois ocuparão cadeiras administrativas na área cultural e realizarão várias ações que convergem às suas propostas
This work aims to discuss both the quest for nationalization of music from folk elements of Brazilian culture undertaken by Mário de Andrade, as well as the musical americanism of the german naturalized uruguayan Franz Kurt Lange / Francisco Curt Lange who preached a cultural integration of the continent by means of this form of art. Both intellectuals created an extensive bibliography and documentation with proposed musical ideals which had as one of the main purposes the cultural emancipation of brazilian, according to Mario, and the emancipation of the american citizen, according to Lange. To do so, both occupy administrative chairs in the cultural area and carry out various actions which converge on their proposals

The following text studies to print ads in the newspaper Folha da Feira and Folha do Norte leaf in the period 1900-1940. In addition, presents briefly some of the aspects of this city 'Princess' in a period of profound changes in society and Brazilian culture, and also the time when Feira de Santana begins to stand out among the cities of Bahia interior, process which will culminate in the position of second city of the state. This is a job that uses resources of cultural history and also historical memorials of the graphics and publishing propaganda used in the period. In the main centers of the country, advertising as a profession passed to popularize and enhance development and complexity of their texts and diagramming. Understanding the ideological and aesthetic elements that made these ads is fundamental to reflect on my role as historian and publicist, plus a small contribution to the debate on the memory of the city, recreating and representing aspects of the advertisements and of the city.

Estas foram produzidas em um período conturbado da sociedade peruana, imersa no processo de modernização e migração interna da serra para a costa durante as décadas de 1950 e 1960. E são estas obras que serão objeto de investigação neste estudo, que visa analisar o escritor peruano como um literato engajado que intervém em sua sociedade também através dos romances, utilizando-os como instrumento para se expressar. Procurando compreender também, até que ponto suas obras das décadas de 1950 e 1960 dialogam com outras áreas do conhecimento nos debates sobre os problemas enfrentados por sua sociedade. Buscando, ainda, entender suas concepções sobre literatura, romance e o papel do literato, com o intuito de situá-lo em sua trajetória intelectual, partindo do pressuposto que os romances estudados nesta pesquisa podem ser compreendidos como uma oportunidade que lhe garante a expressão de sua inquietude intelectual em busca de estabelecer tipificações e interpretações em torno da realidade peruana e latino-americana. Writer, playwright, essayist and literary critic, Mario Vargas Llosa was awarded with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010, has become one of the leading intellectual figures of contemporary Peru. Many of his books were influenced by their perception of Peruvian society and his own experiences, achieving recognition with books like Los Jefes, La ciudad y los perros, La Casa Verde, Los Cachorros and Conversación en la Catedral. These books were produced in a troubled period of Peruvian society, immersed in the modernization and internal migration of the mountain to the coast during the 1950s and 1960s process. And these books will be the subject of our investigation in this study, which aims to analyze the Peruvian writer engaged as a writer that also affects its society through novels, using them as a tool to express himself. Also seeking to understand the extent to which his works of the 1950s and 1960s dialogue with other areas of knowledge in the debates on the problems faced by your society. We also seek to understand your conceptions of literature, romance and the role of the writer, in order to place him in his intellectual trajectory, assuming that the novels studied in this research can be understood as an opportunity which guarantees the expression of his intellectual restlessness, seeking to establish typifications and interpretations around the Peruvian and Latin America reality. This work also aims to identify how the plots of the novel demonstrate these transformations, taking into consideration the engaged literature proposed by Vargas Llosa and how these changes occurred and led to a reconfiguration of the way of understanding the concept of criollo, deeply investigating the social relationships between already residing in Lima inhabitants and migrants coming from the mountain

Full textThe aim of this study is to elucidate the image of the present Hispanic American cities and the city dweller through the following novels: Mexico in la region mas transparente and cambio de piel, c. Fuentes; caracas in pais portatil, a. Gonzalez leon; a Columbian metropolis in al pie de la ciudad, M. Mejia Vallejo; Lima in la ciudad y los perros, M. Vargas Llosa, and un mundo para Julius, A. Bryce Echenique; and Buenos Aires both in adan buenosayres, L. Marechal, and sobre heroes y tumbas, E. Sabato. The work is divided into four parts: the geographic frame, the study of the society, the urban communication analysis and the exploration of the poetical narratives. The disorganized and contrasted urban landscapes reflect the innumerable problems of an uncontrolled urban growth. The analysis of the romantic urban society reveals a structure fundamentally tripartite and strongly graded: the floating middle-class mass wavers between the indecent wealth of the oligarchy and the extreme dearth of the people. Violence and indifference prevail in the coded, repressive and off-putting urban space. Some myths and symbols, the narratives baroque and glaring structures, their expressionist styles are the metaphoric expression of the alarming brutality of the urban reality

Full textThe dislocation of images in motion from screening rooms to museum rooms has been addressed in terms of a « migration of images ». This « migration » was the initial foundation of the present work, determining its perimeter: images in motion, the museum and its collections, the dialogue between them from the mid-1990s onwards. Leaving behind the literal meaning of the expression, this study explores its fi gurative senses: the notion of « migration » calls for an economy, a system of exchange and circulation, an activity specific to images in motion that broadens its initial context. The power of images in motion relies upon a gesture of decentering. Th eir mobility prevents them from reaching a dominant position or attaining an important status. Th ese images resist to global analysis, preferring the interstices, the in-between, the faults, and what resembles to a form of underground activity instead. In other words, they resist the standards. Th e notion of « decentering » describes here three different dimensions: an analytical method, the constitution of a corpus ranging from the 1970s to the present-day, and the general conception of this research. Th e concept allows for the measuring of distances, the grasping of certain infl exions, or accidents, which rhythm the history of images in motion. Our starting point is the historical « decentering » illustrated by the break with modernist discourse in the 1970s. Th e contemporary works that we discuss inherit this eviction and comment on it. Our three thematic chapters comment this shift that challenges the museological principles embodied by the whitecube. Th e archive, the document and staging : three ways of circumventing the refl exes of essentialism. Based upon the close study of works, conceived as case-studies, accommodating for images, texts and films within a tabular plan, this work accounts for the singular knowledge provided by images in motion

Full textThe international performances produced during these years established an artistic and cultural tendency heavily influencing the dynamics of Sao Paulo\'s theater scenery. The cultural consumption was adapted for the demand created by some important entertainment entrepreneurs, mainly from Europe. Immigration policy brought more than arms to work, it framed patterns and shaped a cultural industry. In addition, the modernization of the producion system at that period became a contradictory issue to the economic-social structure of the Brazilian State. The proposed thesis analyzed different primary historical sources such as institutional documents, periodicals, and personal letters from Mário de Andrade, the Director of the Department of Culture in São Paulo. It is considered that the national policy for culture, as for other sectors such as economy, trended the making of public policy for the theatre to the creation of institutional models in São Paulo conforming national templates. Intellectuals and artists attended to be State agents under Vargas\' project of national unity structuring the making of theatrical production.

Esta tesis aborda la expresión chilena de la experiencia intelectual socialcristiana, según el carácter adquirido en la década de 1930. En el contexto de la crisis europea del liberalismo y la cuestión social, se generó una eclosión de pensamiento social católico en oposición al comunismo y a la democracia liberal, que durante los años treinta sumó impulsos al abrigo de una generación de jóvenes estudiantes. El socialcristianismo chileno, como movimiento intelectual universitario, se manifestó diverso en sus expresiones y en el alcance de las energías particulares: por un lado, una fracción de la juventud católica ingresó al Partido Conservador en 1932, comprometida con la transformación política de la anquilosada praxis oligárquica y ante la amenaza del socialismo para su concepción de la institucionalidad; a su vez, otro grupo de jóvenes socialcristianos rechazó la invitación de la política partidista, permaneciendo ajeno a las instituciones y enfocado en la reflexión histórico-cultural en grupos de estudio. Esta tesis pretende iluminar esta tensión por medio de una comprensión histórica de las ideas. Desde una historia intelectual, es posible entender el pensamiento católico de entreguerras no únicamente vinculado a la evolución política de falangistas o conservadores, sino que anidado en una gama más amplia y variada de vivencias frente a la política moderna, que, más allá de la esfera de las ideas, significó un posicionamiento en el orden de las creencias religiosas y de las pasiones. Lo antedicho se sintetiza en nuestra propuesta de estudio: esta tesis buscará probar que los fundamentos de la relación entre el pensamiento socialcristianismo y la época moderna residen en dos reacciones paralelas frente a la esperanza: una, de índole “terrenal”, ligada a la acción política y a la difusión de los valores cristianos en el seno de los tiempos modernos; otra, anclada únicamente en la fe, implicó con el tiempo una negación trágica del mundo moderno. Ambas actitudes se reflejaron en la confluencia entre una “revolución política” y una “revolución espiritual” y tuvieron un impacto en la conformación de este nuevo referente de nuestra cultura política, que devendría decisivo en el transcurso del siglo XX chileno

Full textThis thesis is based on the hypothesis that the use of images, objects or other elements derived from everyday life is a constant in contemporary art from modern art and has undergone various changes since its beginnings until today. Although in the last thirty years the role of everyday elements in art has been explained by redirecting and creating a link between artistic practices and post-structuralist theories, we have recently detected a turn in artistic and theoretical production determined by the confluence of the artistic field and the theories ascribed to speculative materialism or realism that condition the interpretation of the presence of these elements in works of art and their production and allow new fields of work to be opened that contemplate them (textual framework and speculative framework). The thesis is structured in four parts with their corresponding subsections: 1. Part I. Genealogy of "the everyday": historical contextualisation and sociophilosophical approach to the concept; 2. Part II. The concept of the aestheticisation of everyday life and criticism by contemporary art; 3. The Everyday in Contemporary Art until 1980; 4. The Everyday in Art from 1980 to 2014. Epistemological tools and case studies. These have prepared a historical contextualisation and a genealogy of the concept of "the everyday" and have developed the two theoretical interpretative frameworks (textual and speculative) with the aim of creating tools for interpreting the case studies. In short, the thesis' triple objective is: to provide an exhaustive theoretical study of the concept of the quotidian in relation to contemporary art and current society; to create epistemological tools for the interpretation of a part of the artistic production of the chronological period (1980-2014) that works with this relationship, and to use the case studies -curatorial and artistic discourses- as "reflection machines" about this relationship.

Full textMario Bava and Dario Argento are closely associated with the giallo movie genre which they have contributed to invent and renew. Thoug they have been kept in the margins of Cinema history, these two directors have elaborated complex works of art : these creations bring up a double modernity : singular by their styles, they also participate to and from the spirit of their time. Particularly rich of visual arts experimentations, their movies are considered here for their links with other arts. The notion of impurity, as risen by André Bazin, then refined by Guy Scarpetta and also by Denis Lévy when he distinguishes two categories of impurity : local and global, as the main operator able to link the cinematographic creation to its artistical off-camera, including the most diverse approaches of art creation. Esatblishing these sensible proximities bring out a true game of esthetical resonances between the works of both directors. Within four great axes (movement,figuration, materials, spaces), this work aims to reveal little known aspects of their movies directed between 1956 and 1987. Within this approach, they face litterary and scenical domains but also contemporary music, architecture and the whole field of the visual arts. Full textThis study had the objective of highlighting Mario Schenberg\'s action in the Sao Paulo\'s International Biennial organization while art critic, in the decades of 1960 and 1970. It was analysed the critic\'s involvement in the painter Alfredo Volpi\'s Special Room in the VI Biennial (1961), as well as his participation on the selection jury of the brazilian representation on the VIII, IX and X Biennials (1965, 1967, 1969). It was examined, still, Schenberg\'s participation on the round tables promoted by the International Association of Art Critics on the 1969 and 1971 (X e XI Biennials) editions. The investigation considered by primary sources the original critics of the Mario Schenberg\'s Center of Documentation Research in Art - ECA/USP written in the defined period, as well as the other books, articles and interviews from the critic; add to this material the interviews with artists, curators and scientists who lived with Mario Schenberg in these two decades. In addition to that, a documental survey was carried out in the Wanda Svevo\'s Historical Archive from the Biennials Foundation. The critic\'s presence in the field was due, in first place, by his proximity to the artists and his interest for the art and, in second place, for his capacility of bringing a new view to works of art, which could add the singularity of Mario Schenberg\'s figure to the Biennial\'s work of art. In understanding that it was the fields function to promote visibility to the new artists who were starting to develop their work and define new ways for the art, the critic took upon him the role of facilitator on the acceptance of new artists and tendencies on the brazilian representation of the Biennials.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo compreender o itinerário do jornalista Mario Pinto Serva no campo educacional paulista dos anos 1910 e 1920. Para tanto, buscou-se analisar os artigos que publicou no jornal O Estado de S. Paulo (1915 – 1928) e, também, os textos reunidos em sua obra A Educação Nacional (1924). Nesses suportes, foram mapeadas as principais temáticas que configuram o pensamento educacional de Mario Pinto Serva, bem como informações a respeito de sua trajetória familiar, de sua formação e atuação profissional, dos seus laços de amizade, das polêmicas que participou e das estratégias articuladas para acessar os debates e espaços frequentados pelos educadores do período, com destaque para a Liga Nacionalista de São Paulo e os eventos da Associação Brasileira de Educação. A abordagem desses aspectos levou em consideração a conjuntura que envolvia o exercício da atividade intelectual na Primeira República (1889 – 1930). Ao explorar esse terreno fértil, pode-se estabelecer a hipótese de que a presença de Mario Pinto Serva entre os atores e nas arenas do debate educacional esteve articulada a sua participação em instituições que não eram específicas da educação, mas que, de modos distintos, atuaram na configuração do campo educacional paulista. Além do seu objeto de estudo, esta dissertação também procura levantar questões que possam fomentar investigações posteriores sobre os intelectuais e as disputas pela construção das identidades profissionais no campo educacional.
This research aims to understand the itinerary of the journalist Mario Pinto Serva in the educational field of the São Paulo State between 1910 and 1920. To do so, it was intended to analyze the articles published by Serva in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo (1915 – 1928), as well as his collection of articles gathered in his book A Educação Nacional (1924). In the periodicals analyzed were mapped the main themes that configure Mario Pinto Serva’s educational thinking, along with information regarding the story of his family, his graduation and professional performance, friendships, his participation on politics and strategies used by him to access debates and spaces attended by educators of that time, with emphasis on the Nationalist League of São Paulo and the events of the Brazilian Association of Education. The approach of these aspects took into account the conjuncture that involved the exercise of intellectual activity in the First Brazilian Republic (1889 – 1930). By exploiting this fertile ground, could be established the hypothesis that assures that the presence of Mario Pinto Serva among the educational actors was articulated with his participation in institutions that are not specific of education, but that, in different ways, configured the educational field of the São Paulo State. In addition to the analyzes presented in this research, it also sought to raise questions that may foment further researches about intellectuals and disputes over the construction of professional identities in the educational field.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o entrelaçamento de literatura, história e memória na poesia de Mario Benedetti, cujos temas abordam os fatos sociais e políticos acontecidos no Uruguai durante o período de ditadura (1973-1985). A realidade dos abusos e excessos cometidos nesses anos se manifesta nos poemas como uma forma de resistência e enfrentamento da dor. Na poesia de Benedetti, a memória assume o papel fundamental de restaurar o passado – com o fim de trazer à luz outro registro histórico, não oficial, a voz do oprimido. Assim, este estudo verifica como acontece a representação textual da memória e da história enquanto categorias associadas à experiência de exílio e “desexílio” do escritor, forjando uma escrita cuja forma de expressão possui significativa dimensão social e política. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This work aims to study the intertwining of literature, history and memory in Mario Benedetti's poetry, which topics address the social and political facts occurred in Uruguay during the dictatorship period (1973-1985). The reality of the abuses and excesses of these years is expressed in the poems as a form of resistance and of coping with pain. In Benedetti's poetry, memory plays the fundamental role of restoring the past - with the goal of bringing into light another unofficial, historical record, the voice of the oppressed. Therefore, this study verifies how the textual representation of memory and history are expressed as categories associated with the writer’s experience of exile and "un-exile", forging a writing which with a form of expression contains a significant social and political dimension.

O objetivo dessa pesquisa é analisar os desdobramentos epistemológicos da sátira e da paródia na literatura, utilizando como corpus o livro Pantaleón y las visitadoras (1973), do peruano Mario Vargas Llosa. Partiu-se da noção de que a atividade estética é um jogo amplo, correspondente às relações estabelecidas entre obra, autor, leitor e mundo, que permite a reflexão acerca dessas relações, apresentadas através de elementos estéticos que oferecem outras visões não abarcadas pela objetividade. Analisaram-se, então, as relações específicas entre a arte literária e a produção de saberes, discutindo a noção de conhecimento proporcionada pela literatura e sua diferenciação dos demais tipos de conhecimento. Posteriormente, consideraram-se as particularidades da sátira e da paródia realizadas no corpus desta pesquisa, concluindo que tais manifestações possibilitam a desautomatização e a desconstrução dos discursos hegemônicos, a partir de onde se pode construir novas visões sobre as realidades às quais os discursos parodiados satiricamente se referem.
The objective of this research is to analyze the epistemological repercussions of satire and parody on literature considering the book Pantaleón y las visitadoras (1973) wrote by the Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. From the idea of aesthetic activity as a wide game, which refers to the relations established between work, author and world, it is allowed a reflection on these relations presented through aesthetic elements that offer other visions not embraced by objectivity. So that, it was examined specific relations between literary art and the production of knowledge discussing the idea of awareness brought by literature and its distinction of other types of knowledge. Afterwards, it was regarded the characteristics of satire and parody analyzed on this research objects. It was concluded that these manifestations permit the desautomatization and the deconstruction of hegemonic speeches based on where is possible to build new visions over realities which parodied speeches satirically refers to.

Para isso será utilizada a sua tese Da Missão Francesa - Seus Obstáculos Políticos, escrita na ocasião do concurso à Cátedra de História Geral e do Brasil do Colégio Pedro II (CPII), em 1955. Nessa tese Pedrosa trabalha como um historiador, principalmente no manejo cuidadoso com as fontes e na pesquisa detalhada sobre os fatos e personagens que cercaram a vinda da Missão Artística Francesa de 1816 ao Brasil. A originalidade da tese consiste em ser o primeiro trabalho a desmistificar a versão difundida por Afonso E. Taunay que afirmava ser a missão francesa uma iniciativa exclusiva de D. João VI e do seu ministro Conde da Barca. Analisando os documentos diplomáticos entre o chefe da missão francesa Joachim Lebreton e os agentes portugueses, o nosso crítico levanta a hipótese da não oficialidade do convite, sendo que os artistas vieram para o Brasil por conta própria, precipitado pelas perseguições políticas que assolou a França depois da queda do Governo dos Cem Dias de Napoleão Bonaparte. Full textThis thesis aims to compile and analyze the literary criticism of two important writers, working journalists, in a specific period of time and in a determined media, ie, La Vanguardia, between 1914 and 1936. In the lasts years, researchers of contemporary literature have had the need to study the media diachronically, specifically newspapers, because the role they played as mass communicators and cultural disseminators, was very important, at the end of 19th century and at the begining of the 20th century. During these years, a considerable number of writers used to work in newspapers to earn one's living. They took care of literary criticism of new books, with their own writer's style. In this context, this investigation deals with the study of newspaper articles, literary criticism specifically, as an important and significant part in the literary production of a writer. This thesis contributes to the knowledge of the genre of literary criticism, limited in a space and time -Iberian Peninsula in the twenties and thirties -. The research, also wants to shed a little more light on the knowledge of two prominent figures of Catalan culture, which used the Spanish language to communicate: Mario Verdaguer and Agustí Calvet, Gaziel. Both were recognized authors by their contemporaries and by present researchers, but their critical facets have been forgotten, even though their literary criticism's production is abundant and significant. To get these objectives we have looked for all the articles published by Verdaguer and Gaziel in La Vangaurdia, we inventoried and classified them in a database. After that, we analyse the literary theme articles to configurate the literary though, the conception of the criticism's nature and the methodology used by each one. The research increases the understanding of these two writers at the same time that contributes to the knowledge of the critical genre, in a moment of the literature history and evidence links between journalism and literature.

Full textUsing as a starting point the definition for enunciation as the process by which language is transformed into discourse, we studied as a narrative function that produces and analyses the discourse itself. This analysis takes as its core, the novels of mario vargas llosa, in which we studied in first instance, the narrative organization, which is to say, enunciation in first degree. This allows us to observe that the narrative function adopts many narrators mode (firstperson, third-person, multiple, etc. ). According to the content of each novel, each significant element (e. G. Time, space) is privileged in turn. Therefore, we may conclude that mario vargas llosa deals with a great varieties of enunciative propositions. In second place, we specifically studied "la tia Julia y el escribidor" at the narrative function level and the narration main instances. There are two enunciative sources : (1) the first-person narrator (odd chapters) and (2) the third-person narrator (even chapters). The first-person produces the radio-dramas which due to a "fiction within a fiction effect", create a second-degree fiction, since they are attributed to pedro camacho, a character of "bulck no 1". The analysis highlights different elements of these radio-dramas (structure, vocabulary, style, confusions and relations with "bulk no 1") which all join in to create and infraliterary product, subject to degradation. In the odd chapters, we studies the first-person narrator who, as a character, is the discourse organizer, and the speech function of other main characters, keeping at the same time, the relationship with "bulk no 2. This analysis allows us to conclude that this novel, which unites and opposes at the same time two writer figures (pedro camacho and the young vargas llosa), is an inner consideration about the act of writing. In this sense, it is at the centre of the problems of enunciation

Full textThe "literal" reading of the text reveals a fictional universe governed by its own rules and clearly detached from a reference reality which it nonetheless claimed to bear witness to. Beginning with the title conversation in the cathedral, taken as a close reading programme, the study of the novel's structure brings to light a textual edifice which is maze - like meticulously put together, whose keystone is the murder of the "muse". Through successive "mises en abyme", the reader is called upon to participate in discovering the meaning of the fictional universe. Deciphering this world transforms, little by little, this "tower of babel" - with its obscure language in which the voices of the various characters are intertwined into a cleverly orchestrated polyphonic concert leading towards a supreme goal. The plot then appears to be a caricatural and profane version of the very process of fictional creation. If the reader does not succeed in knowing for certain who the murderers of the "muse" are, it is because the true enigma lies elsewhere. The police inquest progressively turning into a quest, the reader pushes aside veils and avoids the successive pitfalls set up along his itinerary by the author. The reader then discovers the secret that the text was hiding and which it finally confesses to him. In reality, conversation in the cathedral holds in its bosom a secret novel which, in the form of a myth, tells the story of its own creation

Full textVargas Llosa did not begin his career by means of cosmopolitism. While he was aware of the problems besetting literature in Peru, Vargas Llosa’s early work reveals his attachment to a national literary tradition. His cosmopolitism stems from a meticulous effort of detachment from various constraints, whether geographical, cultural, social or political. There is a shift from a certain literary nationalism - which he consciously deplores, yet which serves as a point of departure, by its validation or its negation - towards a Weltliteratur, a universal literature. This shift manifests itself differently according to whether literary creation or critique are at hand. In addition, his literary success is accompanied by his participation in discussion surrounding problems in society, particularly within the Latin American context. An experienced intellectual, Vargas Llosa embraces a certain view of the world and shares it with his readers around the globe. This paper seeks to demonstrate that Vargas Llosa’s passing from a local to a cosmopolitan reality reaches beyond the literary realm and manifests itself in all aspects of his intellectual practice. Full textDesde una perspectiva diacrónica, se ha realizado un estudio sobre la enseñanza de las lenguas vivas en distintos tipos de centros educativos de España. Sin embargo, acotando un margen de tiempo determinado -el que va de 1876 a 1939- y tomando como referencia también la situación en Europa, hemos llevado a cabo un estudio sincrónico y comparativo que nos ha ayudado a valorar el peso real de la manera de proceder de la ILE, en lo que a la enseñanza de las lenguas modernas se refiere, y más concretamente a la enseñanza del francés.
El contenido de la tesis se distribuye en dos capítulos. El primero de ellos está dedicado a los siguientes temas: el análisis del contexto político y social; la descripción de la situación de la enseñanza de las lenguas extranjeras en Europa; la visión general sobre la Instrucción Pública en España en aquel contexto histórico; la presentación general de los tipos de centros educativos que había en España, así como de las respectivas metodologías empleadas en la enseñanza del francés y, por último, el análisis de los artículos dedicados a la enseñanza de las lenguas vivas, publicados en la Revista de Pedagogía (1922-1936). El segundo capítulo está dedicado a la Institución Libre de Enseñanza: historia, principios educativos, realizaciones, actuaciones y principales representantes. Además, en este capítulo se realiza un estudio de los artículos publicados en el Boletín de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza que hacían referencia a la enseñanza de las lenguas modernas. Del mismo modo, hacemos una aproximación a la experiencia que supuso el Instituto-Escuela, analizando el caso particular del profesor de francés Joan Nogués Aragonés de quien presentamos su método personal.
Hemos procurado hacer una tesis donde imperara la concreción, dando especial relevancia a los datos importantes para la consecución del objetivo final, o sea demostrar que la modernidad de la ILE en materia pedagógica tiene un exponente claro en la enseñanza de las lenguas vivas. El análisis del contexto sociopolítico y de los datos de los diferentes tipos de centros que existían en España en aquel período, así como de su respectiva metodología para la enseñanza de las lenguas vivas, ha sido necesario para poder valorar el verdadero alcance de lo conseguido en el marco de la ILE.
En las conclusiones finales hemos podido confirmar la hipótesis inicial, es decir, que la enseñanza de las lenguas modernas en España recibió un importante impulso en el marco de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza. Ello se traduce, por ejemplo, en los logros del Instituto-Escuela: generosidad horaria, generosidad en el número de lenguas modernas enseñadas (francés, inglés y alemán), generosidad en el número de cursos escolares que abarca (francés obligatorio durante todo el Bachillerato y en la sección preparatoria, además de una segunda lengua obligatoria a elegir entre inglés y alemán), implicación de buena parte del profesorado en la enseñanza del francés, exigencia a los futuros profesores del conocimiento de dos lenguas extranjeras como mínimo, y, por último, la utilización de manuales y libros de consulta franceses en diversas asignaturas.
Finalmente hemos podido comprobar como las nuevas corrientes metodológicas procedentes de Europa fueron recogidas en los centros de la ILE e incidieron en la renovación de la enseñanza de las lenguas vivas, principalmente en los primeros estadios del aprendizaje. Sin embargo, el objetivo final de dicho aprendizaje en el marco de la ILE contemplaba prioritariamente la comprensión, dejando en un segundo plano la expresión, por lo que la competencia comunicativa en la lengua objeto no era un objetivo primordial. No obstante, en el marco que nos ocupa, el balance de la situación de la enseñanza de las lenguas modernas es altamente positivo, hallándose muy por encima de lo que se exigía en la enseñanza oficial donde se daban importantes fluctuaciones en la presencia de las lenguas modernas. En general, en una buena parte del período estudiado, la única lengua extranjera enseñada en los institutos de enseñanza media estatales españoles era el francés y tan sólo a partir del tercer curso de Bachillerato. Los manuales de francés usados estaban netamente marcados por el método tradicional. El profesorado de francés no solía poseer titulación, siendo considerada dicha materia únicamente como una asignatura más bien complementaria.
In this thesis we demonstrate that modern languages in Spain were given a significant boost by the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. In particular, our main aim is to assess the importance of modern language teaching in the context of this institution.
From a diachronic perspective we study how modern languages were taught in the different types of Spanish educational centres. By selecting a specific period of time (1876 to 1939) and taking the wider European situation as a reference, we have also conducted a synchronic and comparative study to evaluate the real impact of the ILE on the teaching of modern languages in general and the teaching of French in particular.
This thesis is divided into two chapters. In the first chapter we analyse the political and social context, describe the state of foreign language teaching in Europe at that time and present an overview of Spanish state education in this historical context. We also describe the types of educational centres that existed in Spain, discuss the French teaching methods they used and analyse the articles on modern language teaching published by the Revista de Pedagogía (1922-1936). The second chapter is devoted to the history, educational principles, achievements, activities and main representatives of the ILE. We also analyse the articles published on the teaching of modern languages in the Boletín (journal) de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza and describe the experiment embodied by the Instituto-Escuela. We analyse the case of the French teacher, Joan Nogués Aragonés, and present his personal method of teaching.
We intended this thesis to be based as far as possible on concrete facts, paying special attention to the important data for achieving our final objective, which is to demonstrate that the modernity of the ILE in pedagogical matters is clearly illustrated in its modern language teaching. To evaluate the full impact of what was achieved within the framework of the ILE, we have studied the socio-political context of the time, examined data from the various types of centres in Spain during that period and analysed the foreign language teaching methods used in these centres.
Our final conclusions confirm our initial hypothesis, i.e. that the Institución Libre de Enseñanza provided a significant boost to the teaching of modern languages in Spain. This is illustrated, for example, by the achievements of the Instituto-Escuela the generous timetable; the number of modern languages taught (French, English and German); the number of school years spanned (French was compulsory throughout secondary school education and at the preparatory stage, while English or German could be chosen as a second foreign language); the fact that a high proportion of the teaching staff was involved in the teaching of French; the requirement that prospective teachers should know at least two foreign languages; and the use of French manuals and reference works in a wide range of subjects.
