Abstract:
Abstract This article explores the transformation of Margaret de Lacy, countess of Lincoln (d. 1266), from a young and vulnerable heiress into one of the most important and wealthy noble widows of her day, whose friendship was courted by Henry III's queen. Hitherto Margaret's career has been dogged by misconceptions about her father's identity and her marriages. A fresh consideration of the evidence affords a unique window on to the social and political factors that influenced the arrangement of noble marriages in the thirteenth century and might later allow an aristocratic widow to carve out a distinctive role for herself.

Abstract:
This study examines the entries covering the period 2002 – 2009 in the visitors’ books belonging to St Margaret of Antioch Church, Binsey. The study is placed in the context of pilgrimage and sacred space and explores their theology and spiritual significance. The nature of a visit to Binsey is compared to medieval and contemporary practice of pilgrimage and the similarities and differences of various components explored. The question is asked whether a visit to Binsey can be described as a pilgrimage and how this is justified. The nature of the reactions to the sacred space that is Binsey church as evidenced in the entries in the visitors’ books is examined and discussed in relation to comparative studies. The nature of the community that is evident in Binsey is explored and a new term coined ‘heterotopian koinonia’ to describe it. This term is then used to examine a particular event within the life of the visitors’ books, that of the felling of an avenue of chestnut trees on the approach to the church. Suggestions for further research are given and an appreciation of the nature of Binsey’s sacred space.

Dorman, Rebecca. "Margaret Cavendish's 'Natures Pictures'." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/23063/.

Full text
Abstract:
Margaret Cavendish's place in the field of early modern women's writing is indisputable, as scholarship since the 1990s, and perhaps even earlier, has shown. Presentation of Natures Pictures as a whole is an important next step in Cavendish scholarship. The collection of texts in this volume provides evidence of Cavendish's facility with genre, to include life writing, as well as her ability to navigate the complexities of a wide range of topics, from the interactions between the sexes to natural philosophy. While Cavendish is socially conservative, that is, she tends toward tradition in her views on women, men, and government, her natural philosophy destabilizes those views and establishes a tension in her writing. She argues that nature is constituted of self-moving matter and that matter can assume an infinite number of forms. She believes every entity in nature is a unique combination of rational, sensitive, and dull matter. This critical edition of Natures Pictures the first to include all ninety-two works comprising the volume as it was published in 1656, contains commentary that speaks to the ways in which the notion of variety shaped Cavendish's perspective and writing. It provides information on Cavendish's family and career as well as her connections to other early modern women writers. Glosses of difficult or obsolete words are provided; handwritten additions and deletions are noted; cross-references to other works by Margaret Cavendish are furnished; relevant works by Cavendish scholars and other early modern scholars are noted; and references to the 1671 edition of Natures Pictures are provided when those references clarify a word or phrase. My objective was to create a text that would appeal to the literate lay reader as well as the scholar.

Moss, Kate. "Margaret Atwood’s Divided Self." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2011. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/157.

Full text
Abstract:
―Margaret Atwood‘s Divided Self‖ explores four novels by celebrated Canadian author, Margaret Atwood: Lady Oracle, Surfacing, Alias Grace, and The Robber Bride. Although others have discussed the reoccurring themes of disunity and duality in Atwood‘s work, these explorations have not addressed some of her newest novels and have taken a very limited approach to reading and understanding Atwood‘s theme of the divided self. This study opens up a literary ―conversation‖ about Atwood‘s theme of the divided self by examining the protagonists of these select novels by using different branches of theory and thought to fully explore this issue. To conquer their double or multiple identities Atwood‘s protagonists in these novels must take two actions: 1) Accept their double/multiple identities as a part of themselves and 2) transcend this position and the resulting ―hauntings‖ by their mothers (or their decision to choose a replacement female ―mother‖ figure) by becoming mothers themselves. The introduction chapter ―The Author as ‗Slippery Double‘‖ explores Atwood‘s position as a ―slippery (divided) subject‖ between her writing/social and interior selves. Chapter one, ―Canadian Women: Nature, Place, and the Divided Other in Atwood‘s Works‖ explores the role of nature, place, and femininity in Atwood‘s divided protagonists. Chapter two, ―The Uncanny Double: Haunting Entities and the Divided Self in Atwood‘s Fiction‖ contains the main argument and explores the role of the uncanny in Atwood‘s works. Although I explore these four novels most thoroughly explored, this theme runs throughout Atwood‘s entire body of work. Although I mostly use close readings of the primary texts, I also ground my argument in the work of theorists in several fields of thought including Sigmund Freud, Louis Althusser, George H. Mead, and Jacques Lacan.

Carter, Margaret A. "Reducing high levels of communication apprehension among primary school students." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1998. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36550/9/Margaret%20Carter%20Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on a group of primary school teachers as they implemented a variety of intervention actions within their class programs aimed towards supporting the reduction of high levels of communication apprehension (CA) among students.Six teachers and nine students, located across three primary schools, four year levels, and six classes, participated in this study. For reasons of confidentiality the schools, principals, parents, teachers, teacher assistants, and students who were involved in this study were given fictitious names. The following research question was explored in this study: What intervention actions can primary school teachers implement within their class programs that support the reduction of high CA levels among students? Throughout this study the term CA referred to "an individual's level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated (oral) communication with another person or persons" (McCroskey, 1984, p. 13). The sources of CA were explained with reference to McCroskey's state-trait continuum. The distinctions between high and appropriate levels of CA were determined conceptually and empirically. The education system within which this study was conducted promoted the philosophy of inclusion and the practices of inclusive schooling. Teachers employed in this system were encouraged to create class programs inclusive of and successful for all students. Consequently the conceptual framework within which this study was conducted was based around the notion of inclusion. Action research and case study research were the methodologies used in the study. Case studies described teachers' action research as they responded to the challenge of executing intervention actions within their class programs directed towards supporting the reduction of high CA levels among students. Consequently the teachers and not the researcher were the central characters in each of the case studies. Three principal data collection instruments were used in this study: Personal Report of Communication Fear (PRCF) scale, semistructured interviews, and dialogue journals. The PRCF scale was the screening tool used to identify a pool of students eligible for the study. Data relevant to the students involved in the study were gathered during semistructured interviews and throughout the dialogue journaling process. Dialogue journaling provided the opportunity for regular contact between teachers and the researcher, a sequence to teacher and student intervention behaviours, and a permanent record of teacher and student growth and development. The majority of teachers involved in this study endeavoured to develop class programs inclusive of all students. These teachers acknowledged the importance of modifying aspects of their class programs in response to the diverse and often multiple needs of individual students with high levels of CA. Numerous conclusions were drawn regarding practical ways that the teachers in this study supported the reduction of high CA levels among students. What this study has shown is that teachers can incorporate intervention actions within their class programs aimed towards supporting students lower their high levels of CA. Whilst no teacher developed an identical approach to intervention, similarities and differences were evident among teachers regarding their selection, interpretation, and implementation of intervention actions. Actions that teachers enacted within their class programs emerged from numerous fields of research including CA, inclusion, social skills, behaviour teaching, co-operative learning, and quality schools. Each teacher's knowledge of and familiarity with these research fields influenced their preference for and commitment to particular intervention actions. Additional factors including each teacher's paradigm of inclusion and exclusion contributed towards their choice of intervention actions. Possible implications of these conclusions were noted with reference to teachers, school administrators, support personnel, system personnel, teacher educators, parents, and researchers.

Abstract:
This article examines the specifics of the translation of irony in Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with The Wind”. The relevance of the article lies in the problems of translating an artistic technique from English into Russian. The purpose of the article is to identify the definition of the term “irony” and ways to translate it based on the works of scientists. The research methodology consists of analyzing the techniques of translating quotations from the original text of the novel and its translation. As a result of the study, the most effective translation techniques were identified, such as: complete translation with minor lexical or grammatical transformations; antonymic translation; addition of semantic components; cultural and situational substitution. The specifics of the translation of irony in the text using transformation techniques were also determined, due to the special role of this literary technique in the context of the novel. The theoretical basis of this article is the classification of translation techniques by T. A. Kazakova. The conclusions of the study show which are the most effective translation techniques used in translating the artistic technique “irony” from English into Russian.

The Health Affairs Council on Health Care Spending and Value was charged with recommending ways that the United States can take a deliberate approach to moderating health care spending growth while maximizing value. The council is a nonpartisan, multidisciplinary, expert working group under the leadership of cochairs William Frist and Margaret Hamburg. This, the council’s final report, accomplishes two goals: through its supporting research, it synthesizes literature about how much the US spends on health care, the value of that spending, and the likely impact of various interventions; and it provides recommendations to public and private stakeholders on how to achieve higher-value health care spending and growth in the US.

The purpose of this toolkit is to summarise and present key messages from the latest evidence on ‘what works’ for health systems strengthening (HSS) to help embed a stronger HSS approach into all of our work on health as outlined in FCDO’s position paper Health Systems Strengthening for Global Health Security and Universal Health Coverage (FCDO 2021). The toolkit draws extensively on more detailed pieces of work analysing the evidence in more depth, which were disseminated through the health network in FCDO (and previously the Department for International Development) between 2019 and 2022 titled Evidence Review of What Works for Health Systems Strengthening, Where and When? (Witter et al. 2021). This toolkit also links back to a multitude of resources and recorded sessions collected as part of K4Ds previous learning journey on HSS.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.

Abstract:
Attachment disorders were defined in the clinical literature >40 years ago, but their systematic analysis has only occurred relatively recently. In 2015, Charles Zeanah and Mary Margaret Gleason compiled an Annual Research Review into attachment disorders in early childhood for the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. Here, the researchers outline the key findings from their review and provide an update as to how the field has progressed over the past years.
