Abstract:
Nearly 70 years apart, two francophone authors, the Haitian Frédéric Marcelin (1848-1917) and the Congolese Sony Labou Tansi (1947-1995), published novels whose plot either entirely or partially calls upon the theme of vengeance, each featuring the same principal elements: women, dictators, champagne, poison, seduction and sex. In Marcelin’s La vengeance de Mama (1902, 1974), Zulma Corneille, nicknamed Mama, avenges the death of her fiancé, Épaminondas Labasterre, by making his murderer Télémaque drink poisoned champagne during an amourous rendez-vous; in Sony Labou Tansi’s La Vie et demie (1979), after seeing her entire family murdered by the Guide Providientiel de la Katamalanasie, Chaïdana, the daughter of the antagonist Martial, likewise uses poisoned champagne to kill off a number of the totalitarian country’s officials after having offered herself to them in the novel’s eponymous hotel. The goal of this article is to investigate what must be fortuitous similarities between these two novels, as it is unlikely that Labou Tansi would have read Marcelin. It aims to analyse the way in which vengeance is employed in the novels, notably the use of ruses and seduction as a means of enticing the victims.

Abstract:
Recent Australian academic attempts to define the 'charism,' or distinguishing spirit, of the Marist Brothers' style of education, have been conducted using sociological methodologies and have resulted in findings which are more religious than educational or pedagogical, in content. The present enquiry is more educational in focus and historical in approach. This enquiry poses a series of questions e.g: Did the Marists who arrived in Australia in 1872 come as the conscious bearers of a distinctive style of teaching? Did they adapt this distinctive style to meet the needs of the Australian society? How faithfully did they cling to their founding inspiration? Have they been successful in preserving this distinctiveness in the face of modern developments in Australian education and in the Catholic Church? Or, is all that remains the name 'Marist'? The historical methodology employed uses both recent academic analyses of the Marist Brothers' Founder's work and also of the archival documentation of the Order's foundation and development in Australia. It also tracks, though not in isolation, the development of the first Marist school in Sydney, St Patrick's, Church Hill; founded in 1872 and still operating, at a new location 'Dundas' in the more recently-formed diocese of Parramatta. This individual school's role in Marist teacher education in early, and more recent times, makes it an appropriate focus. In summary, the thesis concludes that the Marists did come as conscious disciples of St Marcellin Champagnat, their founder; but that the pristine inspiration had already begun to evolve. In Australia the brothers continued to follow his example in adapting to the newer demands of Church and State. After Vatican II and the return of State Aid, however, the pace and scope of development precipitated changes which arguably constitute a break from all but the names 'Marist' and 'Champagnat'.

Abstract:
The quality and nature of leadership among the superiors of religious teaching orders has not been the subject of much research. This field study examines the criteria by which the Provincial Superior of the Marist Brothers in the Sydney Province of Australia decides on the appointment of his principals. In order to establish an evaluation of these criteria, the concept of leadership in general and educational leadership are first examined as described in literature. From the literature a model is chosen against which the leadership of the founder is examined since the spirit of the founder, in this case, Marcellin Champagnat, still pervades the present day members of the order he established. The beginnings of the work of the Brothers in Australia were also important as the pioneers brought with them the spirit of the founder and were responsible for a quality of leadership in difficult circumstances, a quality which has become a feature of the work of the Brothers. It is evident that the present provincial superior is imbued with the spirit of the founder and that he has succeeded in interpreting the criteria laid down in foundation in terms which are relevant to education today. Certain constraints and factors, special to a religious teaching order bring about features of leadership which are not found in lay schools.

Abstract:
In 2013, the National Program Patient Safety (PNSP) was implemented in Brazil through Resolution RDC 36, providing that the Brazilian health institutions must have a Patient Safety Plan (PSP) for situations that may lead to adverse events (AEs), which are unintentional injury or damage caused to the patient by the health care intervention and not by the primary disease. The PSP is a document with scientific basis that points to hazardous situations and describes strategies and actions defined by the health service for risk management in order to prevent and reduce AEs in all phases of patient care. Implantation of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) devices is considered a routine procedure at the Hospital Marcelino Champagnat (HMC), located in Curitiba – PR, and it consists in a practice widely used to improve symptoms and quality of life of patients with certain chronic neurological disorders. The reliability and accuracy of the final brain positioning of the leads, after the DBS implantation are of paramount importance to assure efficacy. Currently, post-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for the documentation of the correct lead positioning. However, the interaction between the DBS system and the MRI radiofrequency field could represent an important source of adverse events (EAs) since it allows electric currents induction with potential to cause local thermal injuries on high resistance sites. The safety recommendations from the DBS system manufacturers for most of the already deployed systems are quite restrictive resulting in long examination times or low quality images, which compromises the practice in many centers. Thus, the present work proposes the development of a PSP based on the manufacturer's safety recommendations and a systematic review of the literature to the specific situation of patients with DBS systems undergoing MRI scans at the HMC. We found a total of 26 papers, that were considered relevant and allowed us to identify the potential sources of risk in order to avoid them, collaborating to the successful elaboration of the PSP. Besides supplying local demand, this work also aims to promote patient safety and draw attention to the need of interposing barriers in order to avoid significant AEs situations that a radiology department may be presented with. Moreover, the methodology proposed here can serve as a basis for other imaging centers to compose their own PSPs.
