Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The Great Oxidation Event (GOE) is marked by the loss of readily oxidizable detrital minerals and the onset of oxidative weathering. One of the oldest post-GOE weathering surfaces, which extends for almost 350 km along strike, occurs in Griqualand West, South Africa. It is best preserved east of the Blackridge thrust, where oxidized paleoweathering profiles are developed below the unconformity at the base of Mapedi-Gamagara red beds. In the Maremane Dome, the red beds preserve pisolitic hematite laterites, which indicate a highly oxygenated atmosphere and suggest hot and humid climatic conditions. The Mapedi and Gamagara Formations are undated east of the Blackridge thrust but were thought to be lithological correlatives of the ≥1.91 Ga Mapedi red bed sequence to the west. Here, we report a U-Pb zircon age of 1.25 Ga for a felsic tuff in red beds of the Mapedi Formation in the Kalahari manganese field. The new tuff age shows that the Mapedi red beds east of the thrust were deposited >650 m.y. after the Mapedi Formation to the west, and therefore they are part of a distinct Mesoproterozoic sequence. Based on lithologic and sedimentological similarities, the Mapedi-east and Gamagara formations are likely to be correlatives that were deposited on an ancient weathering surface at ca. 1.25 Ga. Our findings suggest that key evidence for a highly oxygenated atmosphere during the early Paleoproterozoic actually formed at ca. 1.25 Ga during a major episode of Mesoproterozoic oxidative weathering.

"Capturing Bone Signal in MRI of Pelvis, as a Large FOV Region, Using TWIST Sequence and Generating a 5-Class Attenuation Map for Prostate PET/MRI Imaging." Abstract:
Purpose: Prostate imaging is a major application of hybrid positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI). Currently, MRI-based attenuation correction (MRAC) for whole-body PET/MRI in which the bony structures are ignored is the main obstacle to successful implementation of the hybrid modality in the clinical work flow. Ultrashort echo time sequence captures bone signal but needs specific hardware–software and is challenging in large field of view (FOV) regions, such as pelvis. The main aims of the work are (1) to capture a part of the bone signal in pelvis using short echo time (STE) imaging based on time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories (TWIST) sequence and (2) to consider the bone in pelvis attenuation map (µ-map) to MRAC for PET/MRI systems. Procedures: Time-resolved angiography with interleaved stochastic trajectories, which is routinely used for MR angiography with high temporal and spatial resolution, was employed for fast/STE MR imaging. Data acquisition was performed in a TE of 0.88 milliseconds (STE) and 4.86 milliseconds (long echo time [LTE]) in pelvis region. Region of interest (ROI)-based analysis was used for comparing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of cortical bone in STE and LTE images. A hybrid segmentation protocol, which is comprised of image subtraction, a Fuzzy-based segmentation, and a dedicated morphologic operation, was used for generating a 5-class µ-map consisting of cortical bone, air cavity, fat, soft tissue, and background (µ-mapMR-5c). A MR-based 4-class µ-map (µ-mapMR-4c) that considered soft tissue rather than bone was generated. As such, a bilinear (µ-mapCT-ref), 5 (µ-mapCT-5c), and 4 class µ-map (µ-mapCT-4c) based on computed tomography (CT) images were generated. Finally, simulated PET data were corrected using µ-mapMR-5c (PET-MRAC5c), µ-mapMR-4c (PET-MRAC4c), µ-mapCT-5c (PET-CTAC5c), and µ-mapCT-ref (PET-CTAC). Results: The ratio of SNRbone to SNRair cavity in LTE images was 0.8, this factor was increased to 4.4 in STE images. The Dice, Sensitivity, and Accuracy metrics for bone segmentation in proposed method were 72.4% ± 5.5%, 69.6% ± 7.5%, and 96.5% ± 3.5%, respectively, where the segmented CT served as reference. The mean relative error in bone regions in the simulated PET images were −13.98% ± 15%, −35.59% ± 15.41%, and 1.81% ± 12.2%, respectively, in PET-MRAC5c, PET-MRAC4c, and PET-CTAC5c where PET-CTAC served as the reference. Despite poor correlation in the joint histogram of µ-mapMR-4c versus µ-mapCT-5c (R2 > 0.78) and PET-MRAC4c versus PET-CTAC5c (R2 = 0.83), high correlations were observed in µ-mapMR-5c versus µ-mapCT-5c (R2 > 0.94) and PET-MRAC5c versus PET-CTAC5c (R2 > 0.96). Conclusions: According to the SNRSTE, pelvic bone, the cortical bone can be separate from air cavity in STE imaging based on TWIST sequence. The proposed method generated an MRI-based µ-map containing bone and air cavity that led to more accurate tracer uptake estimation than MRAC4c. Uptake estimation in hybrid PET/MRI can be improved by employing the proposed method.

Abstract:
Plants often modify microsite conditions important for seedling establishment. In tropical moist forest, advance regeneration in the form of shade-suppressed seedlings is a major component of regrowth in new gaps. Tree seedlings may be filtered by the composition and structure of the forest understorey. In a lowland forest in Central Panama, we examined light availability, litter accumulation and the seedling community (abundance, diversity and composition) under and away from the canopies of a common subcanopy, clonal palm, Oenocarpus mapora, and tested whether seedling abundance varies as a function of changes in understorey light conditions and leaf litter depth. We found evidence that leaf litter was five times deeper and light availability 27% lower under O. mapora canopy than where it was absent. The probability of finding a seedling in plots under O. mapora canopies was 33% lower than in plots without the palm. Plots under O. mapora canopies also had 49% fewer species of seedlings and those seedlings came from significantly larger seeds than seedlings in plots not under the palm. Overall, seedling density was positively correlated with light availability and negatively correlated with leaf litter depth. A transplant experiment confirmed that for at least one large-seeded species of dicot, seedlings are negatively affected by the reduction in light availability and increase in leaf litter. Under O. mapora, seedlings of Gustavia superba (Lecythidaceae) had lower survivorship and biomass accumulation than away from the palm. Thus, site conditions produced by large, clonal, multi-layered palms such as O. mapora may reduce establishment of small-seeded and shade-intolerant species, potentially affecting species composition in the understorey seedling pool.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Rats fed diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon region had Hematology and plasma biochemistry analyzed. METHODS: Forty Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control group fed a standard diet; mapará group fed a diet enriched with Hypophthalmus edentatus; matrinxã group fed a diet enriched with Brycon spp.; and tambaqui group fed a diet enriched with Colossoma macropomum. After thirty days the rats had an red blood count and plasma biochemistry. RESULTS: Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were higher in rats fed tambaqui and matrinxã than in those fed the standard diet of mapará. However, mapará increased cholesterol, especially low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. All fish-enriched diets reduced triacylglycerols. CONCLUSION: Diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon region reduce triacylglycerol and increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, especially the diet enriched with tambaqui. Tambaqui and matrinxã affected hematocrit and hemoglobin levels, but not mapará. Further research is needed to determine the benefits of diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon region.

Abstract:
P185 Dopamine receptors are important in the regulation of renal and cardiovascular function. Mice with disrupted D5 dopamine receptors develop vasopressin-dependent hypertension. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures (BP) were higher in homozygous, D5-/- (systolic BP 136±2 mmHg, diastolic BP 103±2 mmHg, n=45) and heterozygous, D5+/- (systolic BP 135±4 mmHg, diastolic BP 100±5 mmHg, n=8) compared with wild type mice, D5+/+ (systolic BP 104±1 mmHg, diastolic BP 79±1 mmHg, n=45). The maximum decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAPmax) caused by blockade of V1 vasopressin receptors [1-(β-mercapto-β, β-cyclopentamethylene propionic acid), 2-(O-methyl) tyrosine]-Arg8-vasopressin, 10 μg/kg) was greater in D5-/- mice (MAPmax -14±3%, n=13, P<0.05) than in D5+/+ mice (MAPmax -3±1%, n=8), suggesting that in the D5-/- mice V1 receptors were activated, presumably by a central nervous system (CNS) mechanism since circulating AVP levels were not elevated. α-adrenergic receptors were involved; α-adrenergic blockade with phentolamine decreased MAP to a greater and longer extent in D5-/- (MAPmax -21±3%,n=13) than in D5+/+ mice (MAPmax -12±5%, n=7, P<0.05). In the CNS, V1 receptors are linked to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) via non-NMDA receptors. To prove a CNS-mediated mechanism of hypertension in D5-/- mice, we studied the effect of 2 non-NMDA antagonists on MAP. CNQX (1 mg/kg), a non-NMDA antagonist that does not cross the blood brain barrier had no effect on MAP in either D5-/- or D5+/+ mice. In contrast, the non-NMDA antagonist GYKI (8 mg/kg),which crosses the blood brain barrier, decreased MAP to a greater extent in D5-/- mice (MAPmax -12±4%, n=9, P<0.05) than in D5+/+ mice (MAPmax -3±1%, n=9). V1 and non-NMDA receptors were linked because the decrease in MAP in D5-/- mice caused by combined V1 and GYKI was similar to those caused by either drug, alone. Therefore, disruption of the D5 receptor produces a CNS-mediated hypertension via the interaction of V1 and non-NMDA receptors with the SNS.

Abstract:
AbstractSeed dormancy and germination involve the concerted operation of molecular and biochemical programmes. It has become feasible to study these processes in great detail, using the current methods for transcriptome, proteome and metabolome analysis. Yet, the large amounts of data generated by these methods are often dazzling and demand efficient tools for data visualization. We have used the freely available PageMan/MapMan package (http://MapMan.gabipd.org) to visualize transcriptome and metabolome changes in Arabidopsis thaliana seeds during dormancy and germination. Using this package we developed two seed-specific MapMan pathways, which efficiently capture the most important molecular processes in seeds. The results demonstrated the usefulness of the PageMan/MapMan package for seed research.

Abstract:
Oenacarpus mapora H. Karst (O. mapora) is an Amazon palm with high economic and nutraceutical potential, from which the pulp and oil can be extracted. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenology of O. mapora in low-terrace and high-terrace forests of the Madre de Dios Region, Peru. Two hundred sixteen individuals of O. mapora were monitored between June 2019 and January 2020, evaluating the presence of flower buds, open flowers, immature fruits and ripe fruits. Weighted mean analyses of the phenological pattern and correlation between climatic and phenological variables were carried out. Higher productivity mediated by a greater number of mature green leaves and bunches was observed in terrace forests located at a lower altitude. In both forest subtypes, flower buds and open flowers were continuous with a peak in July and August, respectively, during the dry season. In both habitats, unripe fruits were also continuous with a peak in September, while ripe fruits showed a peak in December and January in low-terrace and high-terrace forests, respectively, during the rainy season. Our findings show that flowering was continuous during the evaluated period, while fruiting increased during the rainy season associated with a greater number of days with precipitation.

Abstract:
Microarrays are a large-scale expression profiling method which has been used to study the transcriptome of plants under various environmental conditions. However, manual inspection of microarray data is difficult at the genome level because of the large number of genes (normally at least 30 000) and the many different processes that occur within any given plant. MapMan software, which was initially developed to visualize microarray data for Arabidopsis, has been adapted to other plant species by mapping other species onto MapMan ontology. This paper provides a detailed procedure and the relevant computing codes to generate a MapMan ontology mapping file for tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) using potato and Arabidopsis as intermediates. The mapping file can be used directly with our custom-made NimbleGen oligoarray, which contains gene sequences from both the tobacco gene space sequence and the tobacco gene index 4 (NTGI4) collection of ESTs. The generated dataset will be informative for scientists working on tobacco as their model plant by providing a MapMan ontology mapping file to tobacco, homology between tobacco coding sequences and that of potato and Arabidopsis, as well as adapting our procedure and codes for other plant species where the complete genome is not yet available.

Abstract:
The fishery of mapará (Hypophthalmus marginatus) is of great economic importance in the Amazon region. Despite this, it is observed that the current norms of management disagree with the ethnoknowledge of fishermen of the Tocantins river. Therefore, there are many seizures and fines in the Tocantins Low region. This work appeared as a demand of the fishermen of the region and had as purpose to test the pertinence of the fishing legislation on the capture of the species and to provide subsidies for the adaptation of the norms to the local reality. For this, a mapará fishery was taken on the Pindobal Grande river, in the municipality of Igarapé-Miri, in the state of Pará. A sample of the captured individuals was collected, and identification, sexing and biometry were done. Fishing was described, and the sex ratio tested with the Chi-Square test and the mean length differences between the sexes with the Student's t-test. The results were compared with current legislation and literature data. The captured mapará individuals were mostly above 30 cm, as determined by legislation. It is concluded that, despite using a network that is prohibited, the capture of the species in the region acts selectively, due to the ethno-cognition and the fisherman's action ("taleiro"). Therefore, it is necessary that the legislation be revised, seeking the reconciliation between the conservation of ecosystems, the traditional knowledge and the socioeconomic development of the region.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon basin on lipid metabolism. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control group treated with commercial chow; Mapará group was fed diet enriched with Hypophthalmus edentatus; Matrinxã group was fed diet enriched with Brycon spp.; and, Tambaqui group was fed diet enriched with Colossoma macropomum. Rats with approximately 240g±0.60 of body weight were fed ad libitum for 30 days, and then were sacrificed for collection of whole blood and tissues. RESULTS: The groups treated with enriched diets showed a significant reduction in body mass and lipogenesis in the epididymal and retroperitoneal adipose tissues and carcass when compared with the control group. However, lipogenesis in the liver showed an increase in Matrinxã group compared with the others groups. The levels of serum triglycerides in the treated groups with Amazonian fish were significantly lower than those of the control group. Moreover, total cholesterol concentration only decreased in the group Matrinxã. High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased significantly in the Mapará and Tambaqui compared with control group and Matrinxã group. The insulin and leptin levels increased significantly in all treatment groups. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that diets enriched with fatty fish from the Amazon basin changed the lipid metabolism by reducing serum triglycerides and increasing high density lipoprotein-cholesterol in rats fed with diets enriched with Mapará, Matrinxã, and Tambaqui.

Abstract:
Packrat middens radiocarbon dated at 12,280 ± 345 and 12,700 ± 165 yr B.P. record expansions of junipers and papershell pinyon (Pinus remota) into the desert lowlands of Durango and Coahuila, Mexico (26° N). Extralocal trees and shrubs presently occur 24–580 km in nearly all directions including more subtropical areas to the northeast and southeast. An equable Late Wisconsin climate marked by mild winters with increased precipitation and by cool summers with reduced summer monsoons is proposed. The extensive playas of the Bolson de Mapimi probably held water at that time. The Bolson de Mapimi was not a geographical refugium unaffected by glacial climates, although many Chihuahuan Desert plants and animals probably remain in situ as members of equable woodlands. Equable climates, low extinction rates, and repeated, rapid glacial/interglacial climatic fluctuations may have been important in the evolution and accumulation of species at lower latitudes.

Abstract:
Introduction: Skipping breakfast may contribute to poor academic and nutritional status among school children. The current study aimed to determine the effect of the ‘MAPAGI’ (Makan Pagi Bergizi) interactive video game on elementary student’s breakfast knowledge and attitude. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental equivalent group study with a pre-post test control group design. In total, 228 students aged 9-11 years were drawn by proportional stratified random sampling from two urban schools and were distributed equally into intervention (IG) and control groups (CG). Both groups were administered with similar printed media for 10-15 minutes. Video game was delivered only to IG for two consecutive days, 30 minutes each day. Pre-test (PT0) was performed a day before leaflet administration, while post-test was performed twice – after leaflet administration (post-test 1/ PT1) and a week after the last video game (post-test 2/PT2). Paired, independent t-test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were employed to answer the research questions. Results: The mean changes (PT1-PT0 and PT2-PT0) in knowledge score for IG (4.82±2.53 and 3.25±2.47) significantly differed compared to CG (1.75±2.66 and 1.25±2.69). The mean changes in attitude score for IG (7.16±7.17 and 7.34±7.11) also significantly differed compared to CG (2.83±6.58 and 2.64±6.90). After adjustment for potential confounding factors, there was still a significantly greater score in children’s knowledge and attitude after a week’s administration of MAPAGI video game in IG. Conclusion: ‘MAPAGI’ improved school children’s knowledge and attitude, which may lead to the good behaviour of having breakfast.

Abstract:
Chloroplasts are intracellular semiautonomous organelles central to photosynthesis and are essential for plant growth and yield. The significance of the function of chloroplast-related genes in response to climate change has not been well studied in crops. In the present study, the initial focus was on genes that were predicted to be located in the chloroplast genome in rice, a model crop plant, with genes either preferentially expressed in the leaf or ubiquitously expressed in all organs. The characteristics were analyzed by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and MapMan functional classification tools. It was then identified that 110 GO terms (45 for leaf expression and 65 for ubiquitous expression) and 1,695 genes mapped to MapMan overviews were strongly associated with chloroplasts. In particular, the MapMan cellular response overview revealed a close association between heat stress response and chloroplast-related genes in rice. Moreover, features of these genes in response to abiotic stress were analyzed using a large-scale publicly available transcript dataset. Consequently, the expression of 215 genes was found to be upregulated in response to high temperature stress. Conversely, genes that responded to other stresses were extremely limited. In other words, chloroplast-related genes were found to affect abiotic stress response mainly through high temperature response, with little effect on response to drought and salinity stress. These results suggest that genes involved in diurnal rhythm in the leaves participate in the reaction to recognize temperature changes in the environment. Furthermore, the predicted protein–protein interaction network analysis associated with high temperature stress is expected to provide a very important basis for the study of molecular mechanisms by which chloroplasts will respond to future climate changes.

MapAI: Precision in Building Segmentation is a competition arranged with the Norwegian Artificial Intelligence Research Consortium (NORA) in collaboration with Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research at the University of Agder (CAIR), the Norwegian Mapping Authority, AI:Hub, Norkart, and the Danish Agency for Data Supply and Infrastructure. The competition will be held in the fall of 2022. It will be concluded at the Northern Lights Deep Learning conference focusing on the segmentation of buildings using aerial images and laser data. We propose two different tasks to segment buildings, where the first task can only utilize aerial images, while the second must use laser data (LiDAR) with or without aerial images. Furthermore, we use IoU and Boundary IoU to properly evaluate the precision of the models, with the latter being an IoU measure that evaluates the results' boundaries. Abstract:
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity and structure in the germoplasm of Oenocarpus mapora conserved at Eastern Amazon. Thus, 88 individuals were genotyped with five microsatellite loci. These individuals belong to 24 accessions that were sampled in eight sample places of three Brazilian Amazon states conserved at the Active Germplasm Bank (AGB) of Embrapa Eastern Amazon. All loci were polymorphic and they generated 85 alleles with an average of 17 alleles per loci. Total genetic diversity (HE) was 0.48. Sample places were considered genetically distinct, with ?p = 0.354. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) identified that the genetic portion among areas was of 36.14% and within 63.86%. The Nei distances varied from 0.091 between Abaetetuba and Santo Antônio do Tauá, both in the state of Pará (PA), to 4.18, between Parintins, AM and Rio Branco, AC. By means of Bayesian analysis, it was identified nine clusters that compose the accessions of the germplasm bank, with different distributions among individuals. The study showed high fixation rates per sample area, which indicates that there may have been significant inbreeding or crossing among parental individuals. It suggests that future samples should be made of different plants in natural populations. Even though, it was verified that there is considerable genetic variation in the germplasm of O. mapora.
