Fiskaa, Sverre, and n/a. "Road Maps - Navigating the Road Movie." RMIT University. Creative Writing, 2006. http://adt.lib.rmit.edu.au/adt/public/adt-VIT20080627.154735.

Abstract:
This Master of Arts project in Creative Writing was submitted to the School of Creative Media at Royal Melbourne University of Technology. It contains a full length feature screenplay for an un-produced road movie entitled Free Radicals. It is primarily a dark love story between the drug-addicted rent boy Roman and the budding actor, the protagonist Jonathan. It is however written in a conventional structure familiar to Hollywood professionals, and a good deal of humour is used to attract interest in the story. The storyline itself is more familiar to the audience of road movies and independent features in the US or European Art House ventures. The exegesis explores the history and the conventions of the road movie genre, in addition to the established and not often debated conventions of screenwriting theory. The thesis attempts to show how these theories were applied to the screenplay and how they influenced the process of writing it within an academic and commercial context. The MA project shows how different expectations may create a conflict in the personal writing process and inspire a product that makes compromises. The reason for reading this project may not only be the product itself but also the insight it offers into a screenwriting profession where it is often important to meet expectations.

Federman, Sonia Regina. "Recobrimento de aço inoxidável ABNT 409 empregando filme fino bioativo obtido via sol-gel." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/MAPO-7REN7E.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present study, composites made up of ABNT 409 stainless steel was obtained where films produced according to the sol-gel route were deposited using the immersion method. A film of the binary system SiO2-CaO, and another one of the ternary system SiO2-CaOP2O5, were employed. The structure and properties of these films were characterized through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, coupled with the energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The use of these techniques revealed the formation of a homogeneous sol-gel film, which adhere to the substrate (degree of 0 in the tape test) with no indication of cracks nor pores. After the film densification stage, AFM images showed the presence of calcium nitrate protuberances on the surface of the films. These protuberances made it possible to design the surface area of the film simply by manipulating easily accessed parameters, such as the temperature and duration of the film drying stage. The variation in temperature and duration of the thermal treatment made it possible to obtain surfaces presenting innumerous protuberances as well as surfaces exempt from such protuberances. Since one of the key aims of this work is the utilization of these coatings in the clinical area, the biocompatibility of the films was accessed through two methods: one method using a solution simulated to corporeal fluids and another using cell culture tests. The method using the corporeal solution suggested biocompatibility through the recipitation of a hydroxyapatite precursor (monocalcium phosphate) on the surface of the films. The method of cell cultures also proved the biocompatibility of the films as no toxic effects were detected in any of the samples analyzed. Another important finding was the cell viability index of the sol-gel films, which ranged from 90% to 100%, in comparison with that of the control used.

Abstract:
Today there are numerous methods to slow down a corrosion process of metallic materials. However, due to environmental effects and health risk issues, several traditional corrosion inhibitors have to be phased out. Hence, it is of great importance to develop new corrosion inhibitors that are “green”, safe, smart and multifunctional. In this essay, the focus is on mussel adhesive protein (MAP) and its possibility to reduce the rate of the corrosion process. The protein exhibit great adhesive strength and protective properties, allowing it to adhere to a multitude of different surfaces and is therefore of great interest of corrosion science. The protein Mefp-1, derived from the blue mussel´s foot, had been pre-adsorbed on the carbon steel surface and provided good corrosion inhibition in a basic chloride solution for a short exposure time. The protection was further improved with the assist of iron and ceria ions by formation of protein/ions complexes within the surface films and thus enhanced the corrosion protection for longer exposure time. Ceria nanoparticles were used in order to create a multi-layer composite film with an even higher corrosion protection. The results suggest a denser film compared to previous samples and a more uniform surface.

Abstract:
This work compares and analyses the condition of community schools in both urban and rural contexts in Mali. Based on data collected through extensive fieldwork among local communities, this thesis - consisting of both text and a documentary film – examines, in particular, the hardships faced by the community school in the Sabalibougou quarter of Bamako city and its counterpart in the village of N’Korobougou. The pursuit of a happy life in suburban Sabalibougou is just as challenging as it is in N’Korobougou village. Providing education for their children is always a major problem for communities in extremepoverty. It can be a huge stress on parents and, equally, on those tasked with school management. Furthermore, educational and political authorities seem to be achieving very little by way of overcoming the well-known obstacles to success. As a result, relations are commonly strained between management and parents - who are, after all, in the case of community schools, both proprietors and immediate clients. There tends to be constant miscommunication and misunderstanding causing community schools to become trapped in a vicious cycle rather than steadily improving and fulfilling their raison d’être. My decision to research these issues stems from a firm belief that basic community education, properly implemented, is the way for the people themselves to overcome the very lack at the root of their hardship

Sundström, Sofia, and Elinor Thelander. "Designing a user interface for web based project managment in film production." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2403.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this thesis project is to create a user interface for a web based film production project management portal. This implies creating a site map and a functionality specification based on the needs of the people working in the film production industry. The project was made on account of The Chimney Pot, a post production company in Stockholm. For the scope of this project, the research was concentrated on the part of film production that concerns The Chimney Pot, i.e. the procedures that take place after a film has been recorded. The research also focused on people working in the area of Stockholm, even if their clients and customers in other areas of Sweden and abroad were indirectly included in order for the project portal to be a usable tool in projects where these people are involved.

Before any visible results can be seen in a web production project, a range of preparation steps needs to be taken. Planning is essential if the final product shall work properly. Extensive research has to be done into the industry. In order to make the product usable, the intended users, their requirements, work procedures and environment need to be examined. Only when there are substantial results and enough knowledge about the industry, the actual implementation can start. The first step is to make a functionality specification, next a site map should be produced and the technical architecture should be specified. These are the areas that are covered in this project, but there are also recommendations about how the further development should be made. Important aspects in the next phase are to create a budget, to put together a development team and to create a graphic user interface. In the whole process the issues of usability need to be considered, i.e. efficiency, flexibility, learnability and satisfaction.

The key requirements for the project portal turned out to be speed and effectiveness. The user interface was designed to be intuitive and to be shallow, which means that the user should be able to perform any task with the least amount of mouse clicks possible. Another intention with the produced user interface is for it to be clearly divided into the four main areas that could be extracted from the user requirements. They are planning, project details, communication and file sharing. Directly after logging on to the project portal, the user should get an overview of all these areas. Other important considerations were security, version control and seamlessness. These issues demand a thorough planning of the technical architecture and this thesis provides some useful tips for the further development of the technical specification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Spain underwent drastic social and political changes in the last decades of the twentieth century which also affected the nation’s patterns of emigration. Contemporary Spanish literature and film that portray these decades reflect the country’s fluctuating characteristics of migration. ¡Vente a Alemania, Pepe! (1971) by Pedro Lazaga, Coto vedado (1985) by Juan Goytisolo, El hijo del acordeonista (2003) by Bernardo Atxaga, and Yoyes (2000) by Helena Taberna demonstrate Spain’s migration trends during the last years of Franco’s dictatorship and the transition to democracy. The nation’s highly increased socioeconomic development in the 1970s and 1980s which eventually led to a first-world status also affected emigration, which can be seen in Carlota Fainberg (1999) by Antonio Muñoz Molina, Kasbah (2000) by Mariano Barroso, Restos de carmine (1999) by Juan Madrid, and Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (2009) by Isabel Coixet.

Almabrok, Almabrok Abushanaf. "Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow in Up and Down Vertical Pipes." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2013. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/8447.

Full text
Abstract:
Multiphase flows occurring in pipelines with a serpentine configuration is an important phenomenon, which can be encountered in heat exchangers used in a variety of industrial processes. More specifically, in many industrial units such as a large cracking furnace in a refinery, the tubes are arranged in a serpentine manner and are relatively short. As flow negotiates round the 180o bend at the ends of the tubes, the generated centrifugal force could cause flow maldistribution creating local dry spots, where no steady liquid film is formed on the adjacent straight sections of the pipe. As a result, events including coking, cracking and overheating of heat transfer surfaces may occur and lead to frequent shutdown of the facilities. Consequently, this could increase operating costs and reduce production revenue. Thus, it is desirable to know the effect that the bends exert on the flow in the straight part of the pipe. Apart from this, knowledge of the bend effects on the flows in the pipeline could also be important for the design of other pipelines for gas/liquid transport, e.g. offshore gas and oil pipelines. Quite a large number of studies have been found in the literature. The majority of them were for two-phase flow with small diameter pipes (i.d. ≤ 50 mm). However, studies with large diameter pipes (i.d. ≥ 100 mm), have increasingly been considered in recent years as problems related to large diameter vertical pipes are being encountered more and more often in industrial situations. This thesis studies the effect of 180o bends on the characteristics and development of gas-liquid two-phase flows in large diameter downward and upward pipes. The study particularly focuses on the influence of serpentine configuration on flow structure, cross-sectional void distribution and circumferential liquid film profiles and their development along the downward and upward sections. It was found that both the top and bottom bends have considerable impacts on flow behaviour, although to varying degrees. These impacts were highly dependent on the air and water flow rates. For sufficient flow rates, the bends were observed to create flow maldistribution in the adjacent straight section, due to the effects of centrifugal force. The air moved towards the inner zone of the bend and the water towards the outer zone, while a lesser quantity of water was identified on the other surfaces of the pipe. Investigation of the film thickness development in the downward and upward sections showed that, the liquid film behaviour close to the bends was significantly different from those located further away. This can be attributed to the centrifugal force of the bends. Examination of the power spectral density (PSD) along the downward and upward sections showed that, the shape of PSD located in the adjacent section to the bends, was substantially different from those located further away. Furthermore, several flow regime maps were generated which showed that, in addition to bubbly, intermittent and annular flows, unstable flows existed along the upward section, particularly for low gas and water flow rates. In this study it was found that, the lower bend was periodically blocked by the liquid and then blown through by the accumulated air. The data obtained from this study were compared with different theoretical correlations found in the existing literature. Some discrepancy between the results of the current study and those of previous published materials was noted. Updated correlations were presented which provided well results when they applied for the data obtained from the current study and previous studies.

Okerberg, Brian. "Morphological Studies of Crystallization in Thin Films of PEO/PMMA Blends." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29213.

Full text
Abstract:
Morphological development during crystallization of thin films of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) / poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends has been reported. Studies have focused on the effects of the blend composition, PMMA molecular weight, film thickness, and crystallization temperature on the observed crystal morphology. As the blend composition was varied from 90 to 30 wt% PEO, the crystal morphology varied from spherulites to needles and dendrites. Variation of the crystallization temperature and PMMA molecular weight resulted in similar changes in morphology. A morphological map demonstrating the roles of the experimental controls on the observed crystal morphology has been developed. This map was used as a tool for more detailed studies of the observed morphologies and morphological transitions. The dendritic region of the map (~ 30 = 40 wt% PEO) was studied in detail. Changes in the diffusion length were achieved through variation of the PMMA molecular weight, and were shown to influence the secondary sidebranch spacing. Sidebranch spacing measurements revealed that coarsening of the dendritic microstructure occurred well after the competition between diffusion fields of neighboring dendrite arms vanished, indicating the existence of another coarsening mechanism. These studies of dendritic sidebranching indicate that polymer dendrites develop by mechanisms similar to those in small molecules and metals. A number of in-situ observations of morphological transitions have also been reported, including a dense-branched morphology (DBM)/dendrite transition, a DBM/stacked-needle/needle transition, and a transition from dendrites with 90o sidebranching to dendrites with 45o branching or a dense-branched morphology, both of which grow at 45o to the original dendrite trunk. The DBM/dendrite transition occurred over a range of crystallization temperatures, indicating that the transition is not sharp. Crystal growth rate measurements verified this result. The DBM/stacked-needle/needle transitions demonstrated distinct jumps in the crystal growth rate, indicating a change in the growth mechanism or direction. For the transition involving a change in the growth direction, the effective level of noise (fluctuation) was found to be important in morphological selection. The results of this work have helped to define new directions for the study of crystal morphologies, especially in the areas of spherulite formation and dendritic growth.

Abstract:
Mobile Edge Cloud brings the cloud closer to mobile users by moving the cloud computational efforts from the internet to the mobile edge. We adopt a local mobile edge cloud computing architecture, where small cells are empowered with computational and storage capacities. Mobile users’ offloaded computational tasks are executed at the cloud-enabled small cells. We propose the concept of small cells clustering for mobile edge computing, where small cells cooperate in order to execute offloaded computational tasks. A first contribution of this thesis is the design of a multi-parameter computation offloading decision algorithm, SM-POD. The proposed algorithm consists of a series of low complexity successive and nested classifications of computational tasks at the mobile side, leading to local computation, or offloading to the cloud. To reach the offloading decision, SM-POD jointly considers computational tasks, handsets, and communication channel parameters. In the second part of this thesis, we tackle the problem of small cell clusters set up for mobile edge cloud computing for both single-user and multi-user cases. The clustering problem is formulated as an optimization that jointly optimizes the computational and communication resource allocation, and the computational load distribution on the small cells participating in the computation cluster. We propose a cluster sparsification strategy, where we trade cluster latency for higher system energy efficiency. In the multi-user case, the optimization problem is not convex. In order to compute a clustering solution, we propose a convex reformulation of the problem, and we prove that both problems are equivalent. With the goal of finding a lower complexity clustering solution, we propose two heuristic small cells clustering algorithms. The first algorithm is based on resource allocation on the serving small cells where tasks are received, as a first step. Then, in a second step, unserved tasks are sent to a small cell managing unit (SCM) that sets up computational clusters for the execution of these tasks. The main idea of this algorithm is task scheduling at both serving small cells, and SCM sides for higher resource allocation efficiency. The second proposed heuristic is an iterative approach in which serving small cells compute their desired clusters, without considering the presence of other users, and send their cluster parameters to the SCM. SCM then checks for excess of resource allocation at any of the network small cells. SCM reports any load excess to serving small cells that re-distribute this load on less loaded small cells. In the final part of this thesis, we propose the concept of computation caching for edge cloud computing. With the aim of reducing the edge cloud computing latency and energy consumption, we propose caching popular computational tasks for preventing their re-execution. Our contribution here is two-fold: first, we propose a caching algorithm that is based on requests popularity, computation size, required computational capacity, and small cells connectivity. This algorithm identifies requests that, if cached and downloaded instead of being re-computed, will increase the computation caching energy and latency savings. Second, we propose a method for setting up a search small cells cluster for finding a cached copy of the requests computation. The clustering policy exploits the relationship between tasks popularity and their probability of being cached, in order to identify possible locations of the cached copy. The proposed method reduces the search cluster size while guaranteeing a minimum cache hit probability

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to answer the research question of how a service company (ServiceCo) could achieve a transfer price of its services. This is of particular interest, due to the growth of service firms that have rapidly increased and surpassed the manufacturing firms, as well as the dominant logic shifting towards services. However, the problem with this field of study is that transfer pricing with regards to the service industry, is a rather unexplored phenomenon in which the guidelines and theories are mostly directed towards manufacturing firms. This study uses a single case study approach where ServiceCo’s organizational characteristics were analyzed in order to attain the information required to understand how ServiceCo could achieve a transfer price of its services. Furthermore, this study uses the Eccles (1983) MAP and the OECD Guidelines, as well as incorporating Porter’s (1985) value chain. This study assesses that ServiceCo, in its current state, uses a sub-optimal transfer pricing method of its services. Therefore, a change in the transfer pricing method was suggested to ServiceCo. Given the organizational characteristics of ServiceCo, the results led to the conclusion that ServiceCo could benefit from a residual analysis in the profit split method, in which an actual full cost plus mark-up compensation could be used on its routine functions, and the residual profit could be split between the entities based on the intangible assets employed, functions performed and the risks carried.

Abstract:
Our research examines the encounter of cineasts with May 1968. In the context of May 68, the term “cineast” encompasses all professionals that perform an activity related to cinema. The analysis starts from the mobilization of 1500 cineasts and takes into account their professional, political, social and generational diversity. Considering these as well as the films produced during the Etats Généraux du cinema, our interest lies in revealing the complexity of an event often often reduced to a question of cause and effect, and in enlarging the view on cinema often reduced to the directors and the films. The focus resides in articulating the short time of the event in a longer time, at different scales from three angles. The first angle addresses how this professional sphere is structured in affinities and in antagonisms. Then we move into questioning the relations to authority without polishing the ambivalences (how the dependences are accepted and criticized as well). The last angle attempts to capture the political legitimacy of cineasts and of their media while getting into how cineasts consider the different ways of intervening in the public space. From these three perspectives, we go back to 1956 and gain a broader view on May 68 by “deterritorializing” it and asking how instead of the usual why. We then reveal how the event has unfolded, its hectic circumstances, its uncertainty and the various ways it has been subsequently experienced. Finally we show the paths constructed in reference to May 68 and analyze how the meaning of the event has evolved at the decennial commemorations and how the films of the Etats Généraux du cinema have been utilised

Prior, Amy Dawn. "British mapping of Africa : publishing histories of imperial cartography, c.1880-c.1915." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6689.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the mapping of Africa by British institutions between c.1880 and c.1915 was more complex and variable than is traditionally recognised. The study takes three ‘cuts’ into this topic, presented as journal papers, which examine: the Bartholomew map-publishing firm, the cartographic coverage of the Second Boer War, and the maps associated with Sir Harry H. Johnston. Each case-study focuses on what was produced – both quantitative output and the content of representations – and why. Informed by theories from the history of cartography, book history and the history of science, particular attention is paid to the concerns and processes embodied in the maps and map-making that are irreducible to simply ‘imperial’ discourse; these variously include editorial processes and questions of authorship, concerns for credibility and intended audiences, and the circulation and ‘life-cycles’ of maps. These findings are also explored in relation to the institutional geography of cartography in Britain: the studies illustrate the institutional contingency of such factors and how this gave rise to highly variable representations of Africa. These three empirical papers represent the first sustained studies of each of the topics. By connecting their findings, the thesis also offers broader reconceptualisations of the British mapping of Africa between c.1880 and c.1915: with respect to cartographic representations, maps as objects, and the institutions producing them. Maps did not simply reflect ‘imperial’ discourse; they were highly variable manifestations of multifaceted and institutionally contingent factors and were mobile and mutable objects that were re-used and re-produced in different ways across different settings. Mapmaking institutions were discrete but interconnected sites that not only produced different representations, but played different roles in the mapping of Africa. By illuminating the institutional provenance, ‘life-cycles’ and content of the maps studied, this thesis extends current knowledge of British mapping of Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and raises questions for further research incorporating its lessons, sources and theories.

Abstract:
This thesis questions the politicisation of art, while at the same time investigating the relationship between art and politics as manifest in three political films, the production and the reception of which in France coincided with the post-68 period: Z, L’Aveu, Etat de siège directed by Costa-Gavras. My research aims to demonstrate what social mechanisms are at the basis of the politicisation of film at this time in France by examining the social trajectory of these films, from their creation to their reception. The social construction of the diegesis is linked to the critical reception of these films, creating a playing field of definitions which shored up this politicisation. A change occurs in the judgement criteria used in film criticism and a space of debate is created about the definition of the political in cinema. The methodology applied combines the close-reading of films, research in the archives of the Cinémathèque française and INA, the analysis of scenarios and author-interviews with the filmmaker. Finally, I undertake a comparative study of the criticism in the French press—both general and specialist—, as well as in the countries where the events took place (Greece, Czechoslovakia, Uruguay), before focusing on the specificities of reception in France. This study aims to understand the how a category of empirical reception was prescribed by the press – that of “Political Cinema” to “Political Fiction’ as the theoretical conception of a genre, of which Costa-Gavras’s film, Z, is considered the first example

ZUFFETTI, CHIARA. "CHARACTERIZATION AND MODELLING OF COMPLEX GEOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURES: THE QUATERNARY FILL OF THE PO BASIN AT THE PO PLAIN-APENNINES BORDER (LOMBARDY, ITALY)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/612291.

Full text
Abstract:
Object of this work is the 3-D modelling of complex geological architectures in the Quaternary Po Basin (Lombardy, Italy). Reliable surface and subsurface models in Quaternary alluvial basins are important for several applications, including groundwater research and management, geohazard evaluation, exploitation and protection of other natural resources. The study area is the Po Plain-Apennine border in Lombardy (Italy), in a peculiar sector where the structural culminations of the buried Emilian Arc salient of the Northern Apennines determine the location of isolated reliefs in the Po Plain (i.e. San Colombano Hill and Casalpusterlengo – Zorlesco subtle relic reliefs). This area was selected because it permits to improve the 3-D modelling procedure in a complex tectono-stratigraphic-geomorphological setting, which is of interest for both the still controversial geological reconstructions of the Po Basin and the relevant issues in groundwater management and geothermal energy exploitation. The Quaternary sedimentary fill of the southern margin of the Po Basin in Lombardy records the complex interplay between active Apennine thrusting to the South, rebound and isostatic response to deglaciations at the flexed Alpine margin to the North and the dynamics induced by Quaternary glacial cycles. All of these factors produced the assemblage of nested stratigraphic, structural and geomorphological complexities which are the object of this work. Reliable 3-D models must account for multiple ranks and scales of sedimentary heterogeneity. To obtain such a result, this works attempts to compute 3-D models, constrained not only by the traditional explicit geological “hard” surface and subsurface data, but also by the implicit “soft” data represented by the increments of the geological evolution of the basin. At present, none of the available modelling methods incorporates geological evolution, hierarchy of stratigraphic and structural components of geological heterogeneity and uncertainty as formal rules of 3-D model building in a straightforward manner. Aim of the work is to propose an integrated, multidisciplinary methodology to combine both explicit and implicit geological knowledge as constraint for 3-D (4-D) architectural geological modelling of the study area. Specific aims of this work are: i) to reconstruct the surface and subsurface Quaternary geology of the study area at different scales; ii) derive the increments and the autogenic vs. allogenic controlling factors on the geological evolution; iii) develop alternative 3-D (4-D) models of the Quaternary sedimentary infill of the area, honoring the new maps and subsurface reconstructions and accounting for the incremental geological evolution; iv) contribute to improve and implement a method that combines explicit geological data with the implicit hierarchic and evolutionary constraints for 3-D geological modelling. A multidisciplinary methodology has been set-up. It integrates i) classical geological, sedimentological, stratigraphic, geopedological, geomorphological and structural field surveys; ii) subsurface reconstruction based on stratigraphic correlation of borehole logs and geophysical images, along a fence of 2-D cross-sections over an area of 400 km2 and a maximum investigation depth of 150 m b.g.s.; iii) 3-D geological modelling based on integration of the GIS management of the multiple data-sets and the GeoModeller® 3-D modelling software. GeoModeller® was chosen for the feasibility to deal with the bounding surfaces, which is the key-concept to describe hierarchic frameworks and the key to introduce the genetic interpretation of the basin history (4th dimension) into 3-D representations. To do that, new software routines and novel concepts for the modelling rules were set-up and implemented in the commercial code. Results of the work include: i) a new geological and geomorphological map of the San Colombano hill at 1:10.000 scale over an area of about 60 km2; ii) a hierarchic stratigraphic scheme of the surface-subsurface Quaternary succession of the southern Po Basin, integrated to the iii) incremental tectono-depositional evolution of the Po Basin-Apennine border, that relates the ranking and the significance of the stratigraphic and morphological boundaries to the hierarchy of the Quaternary increments of the geological evolution; iv) the conceptualization of the implicit hierarchic rules to be introduced into 3-D model building, and the procedure to progressively include the explicit and implicit geological rules within multi-scale realizations; v) some new computing routines which let GeoModeller® to manage the new rules and vi) alternative 4-D geological models accounting for different interpretations of the geological evolution. Six high-rank increments of the geological evolution (“stages”) punctuated by low-rank steps have been described in this work. During stages 1 and 2, N-ward thrusting along the blind Emilian Arc originated the Zanclean and the Gelasian Unconformities. On the San Colombano hill, the Calabrian shallow marine San Colombano Fm. (PL4 highest-rank succession) unconformably overlies the truncated deep-marine Miocene formations, up-thrusted during Mio-Pliocene. At stage 3, Early to Middle Pleistocene increments of thrust-folding at the northernmost buried reaches of the Emilian Arc induced erosion of the intra-Calabrian unconformity (U1) and separated local depocentres related to the San Colombano and Casalpusterlengo – Zorlesco structures. These were filled by transitional and alluvial units (PS1 highest–rank succession). These regressive deposits, lap onto the uplifting structures of San Colombano and Casalpusterlengo - Zorlesco, suggesting the onset of their structural separation. At stage 4, these latter two structures were separated from the San Colombano thrust, since the Middle Pleistocene, by means of a newly interpreted dextral lateral ramp (San Colombano lateral ramp), as testified by the delayed migration of the depocentres of the Middle Pleistocene glacio-fluvial units and by the time-shift of the onlaps onto the different structures. After folding of U1, at the base of these units, the Early-Middle Pleistocene unconformity U2 was carved, bounding the base of the PS2 alluvial and glacio-fluvial high-rank succession. During stage 5, Late Pleistocene alluvial and glacio-fluvial units (PS3 highest-rank succession, correlative to late Besnate and Cantù Alpine glaciations) covered, through the Late Pleistocene unconformity (U3), the older glacio-fluvial succession in the subsurface of Casalpusterlengo and Zorlesco areas, while they terraced the deformed marine succession in the San Colombano area, both on the uplifted hilltop and on the surrounding “Plain Main Level” (Castiglioni and Pellegrini, 2001). Syndepositional normal faulting, related to dextral wrenching regime, occurred during this stage. Fault-related offset of Late Pleistocene units, stratigraphic and morpho- structural evidences (facets, relic surfaces and drainage patterns), document ongoing transtension, at stage 6 (Latest Pleistocene – Holocene; U4 unconformity), plausibly relating to the NNW-wards thrusting and related wrenching along the Pavia-Casteggio lateral ramp (Benedetti et al., 2003). Field evidences suggest to propose a link between the entrenchment and the anomalies of the post-glacial river network at the southern margin of the Po Plain to this tectonic stage. This reconstruction links the origin of the highest-rank unconformable stratigraphic boundaries to the Quaternary tectonic stages of Apennine thrusting, wrenching and extension. The intermediate- and low-rank unconformities relate to both minor tectonic increments and to the climatic-driven glacial cycles, because the bases of the glacio-fluvial units are nested within the highest-rank tectonic-induced unconformities. On the isolated reliefs, in situ paleosols testify the preservation of non-erosional surfaces, i.e. morphological surfaces, related to sites of morphological stability. These became the sites for loess aggradation during the Late Pleistocene, that means when the isolated reliefs had been already uplifted and the main controlling factor on deposition was climatic. The recognition of unconformable stratigraphic boundaries vs. conformable “morphological” boundaries permits to unravel the different chronostratigraphic significance of these two surface types (respectively time-transgressive and almost isochronous) and to use them to constrain the reconstruction of the chronological evolution of the basin and the 4-D model to be computed. A novel approach in the use of GeoModeller® is proposed by implementing a model building procedure based on coded ‘hierarchic rules’, at present not encompassed in the modelling suite. A rigorous routine is proposed to apply these rules to obtain at least three ranks of visualization of the 3-D geological architecture of the study area. The ordering of the geological units in the stratigraphic pile, combined with the set of the reference surface (top/bottom) and the nature of the interpolation for each surface (erode/onlap) conceptualized the hierarchic rules valid to represent complex stratigraphic architectures at each scale. 1) The isopotentials of GeoModeller® (i.e. the lowest rank surfaces which can be computed and represented by this software) describe well the morphological surfaces, i.e. surfaces stable through time. Using the orientation of the morphological surfaces as reference top boundary for model computation means to constrain the isopotentials to the deformation history of the area. This concept strongly impacts on the 3-D model application to the simulation of internal facies, as it would be necessary to simulate the distribution of hydrostratigraphic parameters. 2) Since crossing the isopotential, the erode stratigraphic boundaries bring the significance of the time-transgressive unconformable surfaces, in accordance with the geological evolution. 3) By attributing erode nature to the high-rank surfaces, and onlap rules and reverse ordering in the stratigraphic pile to the intermediate-rank ones, the resulting 3-D model displays the high-rank surfaces as composite stratigraphic unconformities, like they have been described by the geological model, since they collect the minor increments of deformation, deposition and erosion through the geological time. As a result, the proposed 3-D models are multiscale and honour the explicit geological observations and the implicit geological evolution at each scale of observation. The intermediate-rank boundaries and sediment volumes represent the result of the intermediate-rank evolutionary increments. On larger spatial and temporal scales, they can be grouped and visualized into higher-rank boundaries (‘U’ unconformities) and volumes, related to the major tectono-depositional stages. The relationship between geological history and geometrical features, with the possibility to upscale and downscale the model according to its hierarchic configuration in view of any specific application, is one novelty of the modelling results here presented. The uncertainties derived from the interpretation of the geological evolution gave rise to two alternative geological models of the San Colombano hill area. Both honour the input explicit data and differ on the interpretation of the extent of the conjugate fault systems that involved the Late Quaternary stratigraphy. The final visualization of the 3-D, ranked stratigraphic units and surfaces highlights the basic role of consistent 4-D geological models as the best synthesis of heterogeneous and multi-scale datasets, that represent the base for several applications at different scale. The adopted approach yields a model that can be easily updated, as soon as new knowledge gets available and modified, and permits to test different hypotheses accounting for any new implicit geological constraints.

Abstract:
How can we observe and film a social interaction without the presence of the camera getting in the way of what we wish to represent precisely ? What place can occupe the « third-filming » in order that the persons observed pursue theirs argumentations as if she didn’t film ? In order to examine the conditions of this relation, between filming and filmed, it’ advisable to wonder at first about the subject itself of this recording : what does the observation filmed of a social situation produce a interpretable description ? To tell on a exchange between two or several individuals involve to represent what that mean and what make light of between the speakers engaged in conversation. Filmed the real world just suppose to attach oneself to work of sociales relations. The director of films don’t take one’s seat in front of the social scope like a spectator, but has to become accepted by the interaction itself, commiting himself in the situation considered as « filming-observateur »

This thesis examines the issues of the modern French education system through an analysis of the film, Entre Les Murs (2008) and French education's socio-historical and political context. The study finds that the way in which France thinks about authority, language, and multiculturalism leads to the exclusion of certain students from the learning process. The aim of the study is to critically rethinks these issues in light of theories on race, identity, and postcolonialism in order to eventually propose solutions so that all students may fully flourish in modern French society.

Year by year, as real estate market is growing, the cadastral measurements take on a higher value. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the quality of cadastral measurements of Klaipėda district sites and buildings. In the theoretical part of the thesis the relevant legislation, scientific articles and books are discussed. Sites and buildings forming techniques are disclosed. Statistical analysis method is applied in the thesis: information on checks carried out in 2013 on the real estate cadastral data files collected by the State Enterprise Centre of Registers of Klaipėda branch is analysed. Commonly found errors in sites and buildings cadastral data files are identified. In order to assess the quality of real estate cadastral measurements two separate cadastral measurements quality surveys of site and buildings were designed. 66 respondents were chosen, which submitted applications for the real estate cadastral data change after sites or buildings cadastral measurements were carried out. 94% of survey respondents in attendance recognized the importance of cadastral measurements and their need. More than half of them indicated that the cadastral measurements task was done properly, and surveyors professionalism and responsibility was named as the main factor determining the quality of the cadastral measurements.

This study takes a first census of handwritten or printed historical and literary Hungarian sources, written in Italian or Latin, kept in the libraries of Bergamo – Civica Angelo Mai –, and Milan – Ambrosiana and Nazionale Braidense. Often unpublished, those documents make up, next to the usual archivial sources, valid evidence of the important political and cultural relations established inbetween the Italian and the Hungarian nations in the 15th-17th centuries. If it has been possible to find out 284 "hungarica" in the manuscripts of the Ambrosiana Library, 251 are the printed one found in the three libraries. A careful bibliographic work has been done describing this material, divided in two catalogues, with an introducing chapter which, once discovered the ancient classification of those documents – one of the most important is the Gian Vincenzo Pinelli’s library of Padua –, analyzes closely the different tipology of sources. These documents has been subdivided in classes: "Hungarian authors"; "Long war dispatches and writings"; "Hungarian dedicatees"; "Epistles, speeches and orations"; "Legendary Hungary"; "Texts not explicitly referred to Hungary"; "Historical texts"; "Treatises". Finally, some texts are emphasized, among many others, to give testimony of the Italian-Hungarian relations during early Middle Ages and Modern Age.

Abstract:
Wireless communications multiple input multiple output systems promise very high data rates on scattering-rich wireless channels. Most of the proposed schemes that achieve these high rates require the channel to be known to the receiver. In practice, knowledge of the channel is often obtained via training, which can decrease significantly the spectral efficiency. We propose an EM-based maximum a posteriori semi-blind receiver which. This iterative receiver uses pilots as well as unknown data symbols in order to improve the channel estimation quality. The space-time scheme considered for the transmission is the Alamouti's two-branch scheme. However, it is not always feasible or advantageous to use training-based schemes. Hence, we propose to use a space-time transmission scheme that do not require channel state information either at the transmitter or at the receiver end. This scheme is referenced as non coherent one. In this context, we proposed to design new schemes that lead to efficient encoding/decoding for the noncoherent MIMO communication. First, we proved that the design of a good non coherent code is equivalent to the design of codes on the Grassmann manifold with a distance criterion deduced from the expression of the pairwise error probability. By the study of the existant parameterizations of the Grassmann manifold, we concluded that a new one must be introduced. Hence, we proposed an exponential parameterization of this manifold. We proposed a simplification of the code conception criterion in the Grassmann manifold. We have introduced a new family of space-time codes suited for non coherent MIMO systems. These codes have a lot of advantages. The number of conveyed information symbols is maximized, maximum order of diversity is reached by using similar tools as in the coherent case. They permit a larger spectral efficiency than existing non coherent codes for similar or better performance. We also proposed how to simplify the GLRT (Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test) decoding process

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this PhD is to provide a Structural Alphabet (SA) for more accurate characterization of protein three-dimensional (3D) structures as well as integrating the increasing protein 3D structure information currently available in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The SA also takes into consideration the logic behind the structural fragments sequence by using the hidden Markov Model (HMM). In this PhD, we describe a new structural alphabet, improving the existing HMM-SA27 structural alphabet, called SAFlex (Structural Alphabet Flexibility), in order to take into account the uncertainty of data (missing data in PDB files) and the redundancy of protein structures. The new SAFlex structural alphabet obtained therefore offers a new, rigorous and robust encoding model. This encoding takes into account the encoding uncertainty by providing three encoding options: the maximum a posteriori (MAP), the marginal posterior distribution (POST), and the effective number of letters at each given position (NEFF). SAFlex also provides and builds a consensus encoding from different replicates (multiple chains, monomers and several homomers) of a single protein. It thus allows the detection of structural variability between different chains. The methodological advances and the achievement of the SAFlex alphabet are the main contributions of this PhD. We also present the new PDB parser(SAFlex-PDB) and we demonstrate that our parser is therefore interesting both qualitative (detection of various errors) and quantitative terms (program optimization and parallelization) by comparing it with two other parsers well-known in the area of Bioinformatics (Biopython and BioJava). The SAFlex structural alphabet is being made available to the scientific community by providing a website. The SAFlex web server represents the concrete contribution of this PhD while the SAFlex-PDB parser represents an important contribution to the proper function of the proposed website. Here, we describe the functions and the interfaces of the SAFlex web server. The SAFlex can be used in various fashions for a protein tertiary structure of a given PDB format file; it can be used for encoding the 3D structure, identifying and predicting missing data. Hence, it is the only alphabet able to encode and predict the missing data in a 3D protein structure to date. Finally, these improvements; are promising to explore increasing protein redundancy data and obtain useful quantification of their flexibility

Abstract:
This thesis questions the modalities of political intervention among protagonists of the French cinematographic field from the late '60s until the late '80s, through the study of the two production groups derived from one and the same basis, Slon ( 1969-1973), followed by Iskra. This work concentrates on the concept of collective activist cinema, faithful to its definition forged during the given timespan, through the prism of production, of the execution and circulation of works produced in this context. The development of the activist collective firstly goes through the elaboration of specific production patterns in opposition with the functioning of the film industry. Difficult to reconcile with the inherent constraints of the film industry, the structural research led by groups fonned after 1968 is a constant until the early '80s, when cinema activists initiate a reverse movement, towards institutionalization. The confrontation between the movies accomplished in this background in response to the key moments of the social movement and according to the claimed policies, shows both the diversity of ways in the commitment through cinema and the difficulty in turning the collective ideal into hard facts. Some of the works studied also reveal the discrepancy between the ambitions of their production structures and their actual capacity for action. The way Slon and Iska organize the distribution of their catalogue made up of numerous products realized in contexts other than the initial, gives rise to new schemes which were not anticipated among their original tasks. Mobilizing new human resources from both inside and outside the group, the distribution had a huge impact on the manner the collective functioned as a whole. It is by the means of this very activity that the members of Iskra finally adapt their structure to the shifts occurred in the broadcasting field ail along through the '80s

Abstract:
Horror films hold a marginal place in the framework of french film production, however they have been produced with a relative constancy from the early cinéma era until nowadays. Within the history of french horror films, the 1968-1983 era is particularly unrecognized but shows a relatively aesthetic unity, mostly determined by the prominent place erotism holds, as a pictured object, as well as an aesthetic form. The corpus brings together films which approach the horror genre in various ways and explores the definition of that genre as it manifests itself in France. French horror films indeed take different forms compare to the anglo-saxon canon of this genre. By establishing a relationship between the cultural, sociological and political context of 1968-1983 France and the film production, this doctoral thesis investigates the influence that the libertarian state of mind of Mai 68 had over the depictions implemented in the films. Those depictions are themsleves based on various kinds of transgression processes inspired by contemporary issues of the cultural contexte of the films production

Abstract:
Living exceptional moments, experiencing thrills, well-being, blooming, are often part of our dreams or aspirations. We choose various ways to get there like games. Whether the player is looking for originality, challenges, discovery, a story, or other goals, emotional states are the purpose of his quest. He remains until the game gives him pleasure, sensations. How bring them there? We are developing a new human environment interaction that takes into account and adapts to emotions. We address video or pervasive games or other applications. Through this goal, players should not be bothered by interfaces, or biosensors invasivness. This work raises two questions:- Can we discover emotional states based on physiological measurements from contact biosensors?- If so, can these sensors be replaced by remote, non-invasive devices and produce the same results? The models we have developed propose solutions based on unsupervised machine learning methods. We also present remote measurements technics and explain our future works in a new field we call affectics

Abstract:
Positioned between writing and drawing, the diagram is proposed by John Berger as an alternative strategy for articulating encounters with landscape. A diagrammatic approach offers a schematic vocabulary that can compress time and offer a spatial reading of information. Situated within the contemporary field of direct data visualisation, my practice-led research interprets Berger’s ‘Field’ essay as a guide to producing four field | studies within a suburban park in Canberra. My seasonal investigations demonstrate how applying the conventions of the pictorial list, dot-distribution map, routing diagram and colour-wheel reveals subtle ecological and biographical narratives.

Chouhan, Arun Singh. "Organic-Inorganic Heterojunctions for Application in Perovskite Based Photovoltaics." Thesis, 2020. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/4656.

Abstract:
Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSC’s) research has seen most notable progress in the field of photovoltaics (PV). The very first PSC was reported in the year 2009 with efficiency of 3.8%, which rapidly increased to the record 25.2% in year 2020. These numbers are quickly approaching the record values achieved for single-crystal silicon based solar cells. Defect tolerant nature of perovskite, high carrier lifetime, ability to tune band-gap and low-cost solution-based processing in addition to many rare properties makes it an ideal candidate for future solar cell technology. These are the properties which also allows this material to find applications beyond PSC’s, like photodetectors, memory, thin-film transistors (TFT’s), etc. However, given the many valuable properties of this class of material, they also come with some dominating properties which hampers commercialization of this PV technology. Problems like, Ion-migration, degradation in ambient condition still have not fully solved and understood. This research field still have many unanswered questions like, finding suitable compositional engineered lattice to make system stable, role of interface on charge transport and device stability. In this work, we have developed a novel process to grow micron size grains of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) using a custom-made glass reactor. Pristine films are spin-coated on substrate in a glove-box and transferred to methyl-amine gas filled reactor followed by annealing of the whole setup in controlled environment. The resulted films are conformal with average grain size of > 1 microns. The resulted films are used to demonstrate the increase in minority carrier lifetime upon annealing in methyl-amine gas environment. Fabricated devices also showed improvement in device performance upon inclusion of large-grained MAPI film as compared to pristine MAPI film. At later stage, optimization of compact layer (c-TiO2) and mesoporous layer (m-TiO2) is performed followed by improved device fabrication methodology. This yield, device efficiency up to 17.5% with high reproducibility. Major contribution in improvement of device efficiency is from fill-factor (FF) of the device. We found that most of the resistive drop is coming from transparent conductive oxide (TCO) and the current path is changed within the TCO to substantially lower the series resistance of the device and improve FF. FF can also be affected by interface defect density and to see the effect of interface defect density on device performance, simulations are performed by taking experimentally found parameters as input to the simulator. High efficiency device fabrication involves deposition of c-TiO2 at 250oC in ALD chamber and thermal annealing of meso-TiO2 at 500oC for 1 hour, increasing the thermal budget of the device. To address this problem, we replace the conventional FTO/TiO2(c)/TiO2(m) stack with Aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO), considerably simplifying the fabrication process and reducing thermal budget. Photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that AZO is an effective ETL for perovskite (MAPI) thin films, with a large valence band-offset and a small conduction band offset, but with a possible path for carrier recombination at the interface. We show that treating the surface of AZO with ozone gas (AZO:O3) improves the charge carrier extraction at the interface and open-circuit voltage (Voc) and efficiency (η) of 1.03 V and 10.5% respectively are achieved. Given the stability issue of the MAPI, couple of inorganic materials are explored as potential candidate as solar absorber. First material is barium bismuth oxide (BaBiO3, BBO), thin-films of which are deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Complete electronic band-diagram of BBO is constructed and TiO2 has been used to make single-sided type-2 heterojunction to test BBO’s opto-electronic properties. Second material is cesium titanium bromide (Cs2TiBr6, CTB), thin-films of which are deposited by thermal annealing of cesium bromide (CsBr) thin-films in titanium bromide (TiBr4) vapors in a glove-box. Proof-of-concept CH3NH3PbI3 device with efficiency of 3.2% has been shown on flexible stainless steel (SS). Also, photodetectors have been made based on gold and carbon-based electrode and comparison has been made. This work provides fabrication and characterization of high-efficiency perovskite solar cell and understanding on charge transport across interface in planar device.
