Full textIn this essay I will make a comarison between Agnes von Krusenstjernas book (1934) and Mai Zetterlings film (1964), both titled ”Älskande par”. I will do this based on theories about queerness in film, comparing movies to the literature they are based on and intersectionality. I will also use Mariah Larssons book Skenet som bedrog (2006) about Mai Zetterling and Larssons analysis of the film “Älskande par”.

Full textThis work compares and analyses the condition of community schools in both urban and rural contexts in Mali. Based on data collected through extensive fieldwork among local communities, this thesis - consisting of both text and a documentary film – examines, in particular, the hardships faced by the community school in the Sabalibougou quarter of Bamako city and its counterpart in the village of N’Korobougou. The pursuit of a happy life in suburban Sabalibougou is just as challenging as it is in N’Korobougou village. Providing education for their children is always a major problem for communities in extremepoverty. It can be a huge stress on parents and, equally, on those tasked with school management. Furthermore, educational and political authorities seem to be achieving very little by way of overcoming the well-known obstacles to success. As a result, relations are commonly strained between management and parents - who are, after all, in the case of community schools, both proprietors and immediate clients. There tends to be constant miscommunication and misunderstanding causing community schools to become trapped in a vicious cycle rather than steadily improving and fulfilling their raison d’être. My decision to research these issues stems from a firm belief that basic community education, properly implemented, is the way for the people themselves to overcome the very lack at the root of their hardship

Full textThe aim of this thesis project is to create a user interface for a web based film production project management portal. This implies creating a site map and a functionality specification based on the needs of the people working in the film production industry. The project was made on account of The Chimney Pot, a post production company in Stockholm. For the scope of this project, the research was concentrated on the part of film production that concerns The Chimney Pot, i.e. the procedures that take place after a film has been recorded. The research also focused on people working in the area of Stockholm, even if their clients and customers in other areas of Sweden and abroad were indirectly included in order for the project portal to be a usable tool in projects where these people are involved.
Before any visible results can be seen in a web production project, a range of preparation steps needs to be taken. Planning is essential if the final product shall work properly. Extensive research has to be done into the industry. In order to make the product usable, the intended users, their requirements, work procedures and environment need to be examined. Only when there are substantial results and enough knowledge about the industry, the actual implementation can start. The first step is to make a functionality specification, next a site map should be produced and the technical architecture should be specified. These are the areas that are covered in this project, but there are also recommendations about how the further development should be made. Important aspects in the next phase are to create a budget, to put together a development team and to create a graphic user interface. In the whole process the issues of usability need to be considered, i.e. efficiency, flexibility, learnability and satisfaction.
The key requirements for the project portal turned out to be speed and effectiveness. The user interface was designed to be intuitive and to be shallow, which means that the user should be able to perform any task with the least amount of mouse clicks possible. Another intention with the produced user interface is for it to be clearly divided into the four main areas that could be extracted from the user requirements. They are planning, project details, communication and file sharing. Directly after logging on to the project portal, the user should get an overview of all these areas. Other important considerations were security, version control and seamlessness. These issues demand a thorough planning of the technical architecture and this thesis provides some useful tips for the further development of the technical specification.

Full textMobile Edge Cloud brings the cloud closer to mobile users by moving the cloud computational efforts from the internet to the mobile edge. We adopt a local mobile edge cloud computing architecture, where small cells are empowered with computational and storage capacities. Mobile users’ offloaded computational tasks are executed at the cloud-enabled small cells. We propose the concept of small cells clustering for mobile edge computing, where small cells cooperate in order to execute offloaded computational tasks. A first contribution of this thesis is the design of a multi-parameter computation offloading decision algorithm, SM-POD. The proposed algorithm consists of a series of low complexity successive and nested classifications of computational tasks at the mobile side, leading to local computation, or offloading to the cloud. To reach the offloading decision, SM-POD jointly considers computational tasks, handsets, and communication channel parameters. In the second part of this thesis, we tackle the problem of small cell clusters set up for mobile edge cloud computing for both single-user and multi-user cases. The clustering problem is formulated as an optimization that jointly optimizes the computational and communication resource allocation, and the computational load distribution on the small cells participating in the computation cluster. We propose a cluster sparsification strategy, where we trade cluster latency for higher system energy efficiency. In the multi-user case, the optimization problem is not convex. In order to compute a clustering solution, we propose a convex reformulation of the problem, and we prove that both problems are equivalent. With the goal of finding a lower complexity clustering solution, we propose two heuristic small cells clustering algorithms. The first algorithm is based on resource allocation on the serving small cells where tasks are received, as a first step. Then, in a second step, unserved tasks are sent to a small cell managing unit (SCM) that sets up computational clusters for the execution of these tasks. The main idea of this algorithm is task scheduling at both serving small cells, and SCM sides for higher resource allocation efficiency. The second proposed heuristic is an iterative approach in which serving small cells compute their desired clusters, without considering the presence of other users, and send their cluster parameters to the SCM. SCM then checks for excess of resource allocation at any of the network small cells. SCM reports any load excess to serving small cells that re-distribute this load on less loaded small cells. In the final part of this thesis, we propose the concept of computation caching for edge cloud computing. With the aim of reducing the edge cloud computing latency and energy consumption, we propose caching popular computational tasks for preventing their re-execution. Our contribution here is two-fold: first, we propose a caching algorithm that is based on requests popularity, computation size, required computational capacity, and small cells connectivity. This algorithm identifies requests that, if cached and downloaded instead of being re-computed, will increase the computation caching energy and latency savings. Second, we propose a method for setting up a search small cells cluster for finding a cached copy of the requests computation. The clustering policy exploits the relationship between tasks popularity and their probability of being cached, in order to identify possible locations of the cached copy. The proposed method reduces the search cluster size while guaranteeing a minimum cache hit probability

Full textOur research examines the encounter of cineasts with May 1968. In the context of May 68, the term “cineast” encompasses all professionals that perform an activity related to cinema. The analysis starts from the mobilization of 1500 cineasts and takes into account their professional, political, social and generational diversity. Considering these as well as the films produced during the Etats Généraux du cinema, our interest lies in revealing the complexity of an event often often reduced to a question of cause and effect, and in enlarging the view on cinema often reduced to the directors and the films. The focus resides in articulating the short time of the event in a longer time, at different scales from three angles. The first angle addresses how this professional sphere is structured in affinities and in antagonisms. Then we move into questioning the relations to authority without polishing the ambivalences (how the dependences are accepted and criticized as well). The last angle attempts to capture the political legitimacy of cineasts and of their media while getting into how cineasts consider the different ways of intervening in the public space. From these three perspectives, we go back to 1956 and gain a broader view on May 68 by “deterritorializing” it and asking how instead of the usual why. We then reveal how the event has unfolded, its hectic circumstances, its uncertainty and the various ways it has been subsequently experienced. Finally we show the paths constructed in reference to May 68 and analyze how the meaning of the event has evolved at the decennial commemorations and how the films of the Etats Généraux du cinema have been utilised

Full textThis thesis questions the politicisation of art, while at the same time investigating the relationship between art and politics as manifest in three political films, the production and the reception of which in France coincided with the post-68 period: Z, L’Aveu, Etat de siège directed by Costa-Gavras. My research aims to demonstrate what social mechanisms are at the basis of the politicisation of film at this time in France by examining the social trajectory of these films, from their creation to their reception. The social construction of the diegesis is linked to the critical reception of these films, creating a playing field of definitions which shored up this politicisation. A change occurs in the judgement criteria used in film criticism and a space of debate is created about the definition of the political in cinema. The methodology applied combines the close-reading of films, research in the archives of the Cinémathèque française and INA, the analysis of scenarios and author-interviews with the filmmaker. Finally, I undertake a comparative study of the criticism in the French press—both general and specialist—, as well as in the countries where the events took place (Greece, Czechoslovakia, Uruguay), before focusing on the specificities of reception in France. This study aims to understand the how a category of empirical reception was prescribed by the press – that of “Political Cinema” to “Political Fiction’ as the theoretical conception of a genre, of which Costa-Gavras’s film, Z, is considered the first example

What place can occupe the « third-filming » in order that the persons observed pursue theirs argumentations as if she didn’t film ? In order to examine the conditions of this relation, between filming and filmed, it’ advisable to wonder at first about the subject itself of this recording : what does the observation filmed of a social situation produce a interpretable description ? To tell on a exchange between two or several individuals involve to represent what that mean and what make light of between the speakers engaged in conversation. Filmed the real world just suppose to attach oneself to work of sociales relations. The director of films don’t take one’s seat in front of the social scope like a spectator, but has to become accepted by the interaction itself, commiting himself in the situation considered as « filming-observateur »

Full textYear by year, as real estate market is growing, the cadastral measurements take on a higher value. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the quality of cadastral measurements of Klaipėda district sites and buildings. In the theoretical part of the thesis the relevant legislation, scientific articles and books are discussed. Sites and buildings forming techniques are disclosed. Statistical analysis method is applied in the thesis: information on checks carried out in 2013 on the real estate cadastral data files collected by the State Enterprise Centre of Registers of Klaipėda branch is analysed. Commonly found errors in sites and buildings cadastral data files are identified. In order to assess the quality of real estate cadastral measurements two separate cadastral measurements quality surveys of site and buildings were designed. 66 respondents were chosen, which submitted applications for the real estate cadastral data change after sites or buildings cadastral measurements were carried out. 94% of survey respondents in attendance recognized the importance of cadastral measurements and their need. More than half of them indicated that the cadastral measurements task was done properly, and surveyors professionalism and responsibility was named as the main factor determining the quality of the cadastral measurements.

Often unpublished, those documents make up, next to the usual archivial sources, valid evidence of the important political and cultural relations established inbetween the Italian and the Hungarian nations in the 15th-17th centuries. If it has been possible to find out 284 "hungarica" in the manuscripts of the Ambrosiana Library, 251 are the printed one found in the three libraries. A careful bibliographic work has been done describing this material, divided in two catalogues, with an introducing chapter which, once discovered the ancient classification of those documents – one of the most important is the Gian Vincenzo Pinelli’s library of Padua –, analyzes closely the different tipology of sources. These documents has been subdivided in classes: "Hungarian authors"; "Long war dispatches and writings"; "Hungarian dedicatees"; "Epistles, speeches and orations"; "Legendary Hungary"; "Texts not explicitly referred to Hungary"; "Historical texts"; "Treatises". Finally, some texts are emphasized, among many others, to give testimony of the Italian-Hungarian relations during early Middle Ages and Modern Age.

Full textWireless communications multiple input multiple output systems promise very high data rates on scattering-rich wireless channels. Most of the proposed schemes that achieve these high rates require the channel to be known to the receiver. In practice, knowledge of the channel is often obtained via training, which can decrease significantly the spectral efficiency. We propose an EM-based maximum a posteriori semi-blind receiver which. This iterative receiver uses pilots as well as unknown data symbols in order to improve the channel estimation quality. The space-time scheme considered for the transmission is the Alamouti's two-branch scheme. However, it is not always feasible or advantageous to use training-based schemes. Hence, we propose to use a space-time transmission scheme that do not require channel state information either at the transmitter or at the receiver end. This scheme is referenced as non coherent one. In this context, we proposed to design new schemes that lead to efficient encoding/decoding for the noncoherent MIMO communication. First, we proved that the design of a good non coherent code is equivalent to the design of codes on the Grassmann manifold with a distance criterion deduced from the expression of the pairwise error probability. By the study of the existant parameterizations of the Grassmann manifold, we concluded that a new one must be introduced. Hence, we proposed an exponential parameterization of this manifold. We proposed a simplification of the code conception criterion in the Grassmann manifold. We have introduced a new family of space-time codes suited for non coherent MIMO systems. These codes have a lot of advantages. The number of conveyed information symbols is maximized, maximum order of diversity is reached by using similar tools as in the coherent case. They permit a larger spectral efficiency than existing non coherent codes for similar or better performance. We also proposed how to simplify the GLRT (Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test) decoding process

Full textThe purpose of this PhD is to provide a Structural Alphabet (SA) for more accurate characterization of protein three-dimensional (3D) structures as well as integrating the increasing protein 3D structure information currently available in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The SA also takes into consideration the logic behind the structural fragments sequence by using the hidden Markov Model (HMM). In this PhD, we describe a new structural alphabet, improving the existing HMM-SA27 structural alphabet, called SAFlex (Structural Alphabet Flexibility), in order to take into account the uncertainty of data (missing data in PDB files) and the redundancy of protein structures. The new SAFlex structural alphabet obtained therefore offers a new, rigorous and robust encoding model. This encoding takes into account the encoding uncertainty by providing three encoding options: the maximum a posteriori (MAP), the marginal posterior distribution (POST), and the effective number of letters at each given position (NEFF). SAFlex also provides and builds a consensus encoding from different replicates (multiple chains, monomers and several homomers) of a single protein. It thus allows the detection of structural variability between different chains. The methodological advances and the achievement of the SAFlex alphabet are the main contributions of this PhD. We also present the new PDB parser(SAFlex-PDB) and we demonstrate that our parser is therefore interesting both qualitative (detection of various errors) and quantitative terms (program optimization and parallelization) by comparing it with two other parsers well-known in the area of Bioinformatics (Biopython and BioJava). The SAFlex structural alphabet is being made available to the scientific community by providing a website. The SAFlex web server represents the concrete contribution of this PhD while the SAFlex-PDB parser represents an important contribution to the proper function of the proposed website. Here, we describe the functions and the interfaces of the SAFlex web server. The SAFlex can be used in various fashions for a protein tertiary structure of a given PDB format file; it can be used for encoding the 3D structure, identifying and predicting missing data. Hence, it is the only alphabet able to encode and predict the missing data in a 3D protein structure to date. Finally, these improvements; are promising to explore increasing protein redundancy data and obtain useful quantification of their flexibility

Full textThis thesis questions the modalities of political intervention among protagonists of the French cinematographic field from the late '60s until the late '80s, through the study of the two production groups derived from one and the same basis, Slon ( 1969-1973), followed by Iskra. This work concentrates on the concept of collective activist cinema, faithful to its definition forged during the given timespan, through the prism of production, of the execution and circulation of works produced in this context. The development of the activist collective firstly goes through the elaboration of specific production patterns in opposition with the functioning of the film industry. Difficult to reconcile with the inherent constraints of the film industry, the structural research led by groups fonned after 1968 is a constant until the early '80s, when cinema activists initiate a reverse movement, towards institutionalization. The confrontation between the movies accomplished in this background in response to the key moments of the social movement and according to the claimed policies, shows both the diversity of ways in the commitment through cinema and the difficulty in turning the collective ideal into hard facts. Some of the works studied also reveal the discrepancy between the ambitions of their production structures and their actual capacity for action. The way Slon and Iska organize the distribution of their catalogue made up of numerous products realized in contexts other than the initial, gives rise to new schemes which were not anticipated among their original tasks. Mobilizing new human resources from both inside and outside the group, the distribution had a huge impact on the manner the collective functioned as a whole. It is by the means of this very activity that the members of Iskra finally adapt their structure to the shifts occurred in the broadcasting field ail along through the '80s

Full textHorror films hold a marginal place in the framework of french film production, however they have been produced with a relative constancy from the early cinéma era until nowadays. Within the history of french horror films, the 1968-1983 era is particularly unrecognized but shows a relatively aesthetic unity, mostly determined by the prominent place erotism holds, as a pictured object, as well as an aesthetic form. The corpus brings together films which approach the horror genre in various ways and explores the definition of that genre as it manifests itself in France. French horror films indeed take different forms compare to the anglo-saxon canon of this genre. By establishing a relationship between the cultural, sociological and political context of 1968-1983 France and the film production, this doctoral thesis investigates the influence that the libertarian state of mind of Mai 68 had over the depictions implemented in the films. Those depictions are themsleves based on various kinds of transgression processes inspired by contemporary issues of the cultural contexte of the films production

Full textLiving exceptional moments, experiencing thrills, well-being, blooming, are often part of our dreams or aspirations. We choose various ways to get there like games. Whether the player is looking for originality, challenges, discovery, a story, or other goals, emotional states are the purpose of his quest. He remains until the game gives him pleasure, sensations. How bring them there? We are developing a new human environment interaction that takes into account and adapts to emotions. We address video or pervasive games or other applications. Through this goal, players should not be bothered by interfaces, or biosensors invasivness. This work raises two questions:- Can we discover emotional states based on physiological measurements from contact biosensors?- If so, can these sensors be replaced by remote, non-invasive devices and produce the same results? The models we have developed propose solutions based on unsupervised machine learning methods. We also present remote measurements technics and explain our future works in a new field we call affectics
