Abstract:
In this work, we studied, at low temperature, the coherent evolution of the localized electron and hole spins in a polycrystalline film of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) by using a picosecond-photo-induced Faraday rotation technique in an oblique magnetic field. We observed an unexpected anisotropy for the electron and hole spin. We determined the electron and hole Landé factors when the magnetic field was applied in the plane of the film and perpendicular to the exciting light, denoted as transverse ⊥ factors, and when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film and parallel to the exciting light, denoted as parallel ∥ factors. We obtained |ge,⊥|=2.600 ± 0.004, |ge,∥|=1.604 ± 0.033 for the electron and |gh,⊥|=0.406 ± 0.002, |gh,∥|=0.299 ± 0.007 for the hole. Possible origins of this anisotropy are discussed herein.

Abstract:
The effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP1 80% O2/20% CO2 and MAP2 70% N2/30% CO2) on the selected parameters (ammonia, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances /TBARS/) and antioxidant capacity in chilled meat (2 ± 2°C) of organic chickens (breast and thigh) was evaluated. Control samples were packaged using a polyolefin film. The experiment was conducted on day 2 and repeated on day 7, 10, and 14 of storage. TBARS of samples in MAP1 were higher than in samples stored in MAP2. Ammonia in meat in MAP2 was constant during storage. In general, the DPPH inhibition percentage of meat in MAP1 was lower than that in meat in MAP2. Results of the present study indicated that MAP2 could be preferable for the packaging of organic chicken meat.

Abstract:
In this paper, aluminum films were deposited on the TiAl alloy by multi-arc ion plating (MAIP) and subsequently diffusion-treated under 720°C for 4h. It is revealed by XRD and SEM/EDS that the film consisted of Al turn to an outer Al2O3 layer and inner TiAl3 layer after diffusion treatment. Cyclic oxidation tests show that the surface of the film formed a compact and continuous Al2O3 layer that prevents the TiAl substrate from oxidation, and the oxidation rate of the specimen with Al diffusion film is as low as 1.84 mg/cm2. The MAIP Al film after diffusion treatment is effective in improving the high-temperature oxidation resistance of TiAl alloys.

Abstract:
Edible films were elaborated from gelatin solutions (4% w/v) of mahi-mahi skin (Coryphaena hippurus) with 2,5; 5; 7,5 and 10% v/v of oregano extract (OE) and its physicochemical, antimicrobial, structural and surface properties were determined. The control and with 2.5% OE films showed the lowest moisture and opacity values and the highest viscosity values. All films with OE inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris. Alone films with 10% OE showed antimicrobial activity against all the strains evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the incorporation of oregano extract in the film-forming solutions, FFS, was related to an increase in the presence of oil droplets in the films, showing the lipid fraction of OE. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyzes showed the interaction between gelatin, plasticizer, and oregano extract in all films. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the viability of mahi-mahi skin gelatin edible films with OE incorporated for their application as packaging with antimicrobial action in foods susceptible to spoilage by microorganisms.

Abstract:
Organic–Inorganic perovskites are promising materials for an alternative to silicon technology for cost-effective performance of photovoltaic’s (PVs). Lead-based hybrid perovskite has lower stability and high toxicity. The bismuth-based hybrid perovskite, Methyl Ammonium Bismuth Iodide (MABI) could be as an alternative to the lead-based system. In the present work, we present the structural and optical studies on hybrid MABI perovskite thin films synthesized at different temperature. Bandgap analyzed from UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy have shown the formation of MABI complex in thin films prepared from the single step spin coating and dip coating method. Further, the MABI formation confirmed by Raman analysis. Optical and structural properties obtained are comparable to earlier reported theoretical studies. The roughness of highly stable annealed film was analyzed by non-contact tapping mode atomic force microscopy.

Abstract:
We report optical characterization and theoretical simulation of plasmon enhanced methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) thin-film perovskite solar cells. Specifically, various nanohole (NH) and nanodisk (ND) arrays are fabricated on gold/MAPbI 3 interfaces. Significant absorption enhancement is observed experimentally in 75 nm and 110 nm-thick perovskite films. As a result of increased light scattering by plasmonic concentrators, the original Fabry–Pérot thin-film cavity effects are suppressed in specific structures. However, thanks to field enhancement caused by plasmonic resonances and in-plane interference of propagating surface plasmon polaritons, the calculated overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cell is expected to increase by up to 45.5%, compared to its flat counterpart. The role of different geometry parameters of the nanostructure arrays is further investigated using three dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, which makes it possible to identify the physical origin of the absorption enhancement as a function of wavelength and design parameters. These findings demonstrate the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in further enhancing the performance of photovoltaic devices based on thin-film perovskites.

Abstract:
Blade coating offers a low-cost production method for fabricating perovskite thick-film x-ray detectors. However, due to the preferential nucleation at the gas–liquid interface of a perovskite solution, high-quality perovskite thick films are in such a dilemma, sacrificing either the density of the thick film by forming a porous structure or the thickness of the film through depositing a compact structure. The porous structure will lead to carrier recombination and ion migration while low thickness will cause insufficient x-ray absorption, which will increase the dark current or reduce the sensitivity of the corresponding x-ray detector. In the present work, a scalable ferroelectric dipole–methylamine lead iodide (MAPbI3) coupled x-ray detector is proposed, where the x-ray photoconductor in situ formed on indium tin oxide shows a dense fibrous mesoscopic structure oriented along the charge-carriers transport direction. It is demonstrated that ferroelectric dipoles promise not only strong coupling effects with MAPbI3, driving better crystallinity and denser assemblies, but also excellent passivation to MAPbI3 interfaces, decreasing trap-state densities, leading to improved direct x-ray detection performance. In addition, the enhanced operational stability of the corresponding device suggests a strategy of introducing the localized polarization field for stable perovskite direct x-ray detectors.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master of Arts project in Creative Writing was submitted to the School of Creative Media at Royal Melbourne University of Technology. It contains a full length feature screenplay for an un-produced road movie entitled Free Radicals. It is primarily a dark love story between the drug-addicted rent boy Roman and the budding actor, the protagonist Jonathan. It is however written in a conventional structure familiar to Hollywood professionals, and a good deal of humour is used to attract interest in the story. The storyline itself is more familiar to the audience of road movies and independent features in the US or European Art House ventures. The exegesis explores the history and the conventions of the road movie genre, in addition to the established and not often debated conventions of screenwriting theory. The thesis attempts to show how these theories were applied to the screenplay and how they influenced the process of writing it within an academic and commercial context. The MA project shows how different expectations may create a conflict in the personal writing process and inspire a product that makes compromises. The reason for reading this project may not only be the product itself but also the insight it offers into a screenwriting profession where it is often important to meet expectations.

Federman, Sonia Regina. "Recobrimento de aço inoxidável ABNT 409 empregando filme fino bioativo obtido via sol-gel." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/MAPO-7REN7E.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present study, composites made up of ABNT 409 stainless steel was obtained where films produced according to the sol-gel route were deposited using the immersion method. A film of the binary system SiO2-CaO, and another one of the ternary system SiO2-CaOP2O5, were employed. The structure and properties of these films were characterized through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, coupled with the energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The use of these techniques revealed the formation of a homogeneous sol-gel film, which adhere to the substrate (degree of 0 in the tape test) with no indication of cracks nor pores. After the film densification stage, AFM images showed the presence of calcium nitrate protuberances on the surface of the films. These protuberances made it possible to design the surface area of the film simply by manipulating easily accessed parameters, such as the temperature and duration of the film drying stage. The variation in temperature and duration of the thermal treatment made it possible to obtain surfaces presenting innumerous protuberances as well as surfaces exempt from such protuberances. Since one of the key aims of this work is the utilization of these coatings in the clinical area, the biocompatibility of the films was accessed through two methods: one method using a solution simulated to corporeal fluids and another using cell culture tests. The method using the corporeal solution suggested biocompatibility through the recipitation of a hydroxyapatite precursor (monocalcium phosphate) on the surface of the films. The method of cell cultures also proved the biocompatibility of the films as no toxic effects were detected in any of the samples analyzed. Another important finding was the cell viability index of the sol-gel films, which ranged from 90% to 100%, in comparison with that of the control used.

Abstract:
Abstract Sweden has been hailed for its recent success in increasing the number of female directors, scriptwriters and producers. Published reports, panel discussions and a vast number of press conferences on the pressing matter of gender equality within the industry together with a 5050 quota have all put the Swedish film industry—and its CEO Anna Serner—on the map. However, the last couple of years has disclosed several scandals regarding sexism and discrimination in the Swedish film industry—just as in other national film industries. This paper sets out to discuss how female film workers (e.g., directors, actors and producers) understand and negotiate their experiences of male dominance within their work context. Based on a series of interviews with women working in Swedish film from the early 1960s until today, we analyze similarities and differences in experiences as well as how these experiences are explained by the interviewees. Their stories are analyzed by using feminist institutional theory to understand how policy, funding schemes and other institutional aspects are intertwined with their experiences. The paper sets out to analyze three themes: (1) comments and suggestions during production and post-production regarding female protagonists; (2) experience of gender trouble in the process of fundraising; and (3) strategies used by the interviewed filmmakers to produce a more women-friendly environment during productions.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Mani Ratnam's 1998 film Dil Se (From the Heart) to engage critically with changing representations of terrorism in contemporary Indian cinema. Mani Ratnam is recognised by many critics and the Indian film industry as one of its finest and most commercially successful film-makers. Dil Se was Ratnam's first Hindi film and the third part in a loose trilogy of films dealing with the relationship between nationalism, terrorism, and urban violence. The chapter then looks at regional film-making in India, particularly Tamil cinema. It also considers Mani Ratnam's concerns as an auteur, the music of Dil Se and composer A.R. Rahman, and perhaps most importantly, the impact the film had at the UK box office with the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) audience.

Abstract:
The surface topography plays significant role in lifetime of highly loaded machine parts with lubricated contacts. Many elements like gears, rolling bearings, cams and traction drives operate in mixed lubrication conditions, where the lubricant film behavior closely implies the main practical performance parameters such as friction wear, contact fatigue and scuffing. For prediction of wear and especially contact fatigue, the values and distribution of the pressure in rolling contact are often required. The usual theoretical approach based on numerical solution of physical-mathematical models built around the Reynolds equation can be extremely time consuming, especially when lubricant films are very thin, and contact load and required resolution very high. This study presents a further refined approach to our previously published experimental method, based on on inverse elasticity theory and fast convolution transformation between the lubricant film thickness map and the pressure distribution within the point contact. The experimental film thickness maps of EHD lubricated contacts with smooth and dented surfaces were processed using colorimetric interferometry and validated using numerical solution, in order to calibrate numerical parameters and to find limits of the new approach.

Abstract:
The paper focuses upon shear-driven liquid film evaporative cooling of high-speed computer chips. Thin liquid films may provide very high heat transfer rates, however development of cooling system based on thin film technology requires significant advances in fundamental research. The paper presents new experimental data on flow and breakdown of a liquid film driven by the action of a forced gas flow in a horizontal minichannel (2 mm high), heated from a 22×6.55 mm heater. A map of isothermal flow regimes is plotted and the lengths of smooth region and region of 2D/3D wave occurrence are measured. The scenario of liquid film breakdown under heating is found to differ widely for different flow regimes. It is revealed that the critical heat flux at which film breakdown occurs for a shear-driven liquid film can be several times higher than that for a gravitationally-driven liquid film. This fact makes shear-driven liquid films very promising in high heat flux cooling applications.

Abstract:
Concept mapping is widely used to facilitate learning tool to help students organize information and improve long-term retention. Student generated concept maps have been recommended for studying content area materials, because the learner plays an active role in creating and modifying the concept map. It is an innovative classroom pedagogy that promotes development of self-learning. This study aims to compare the effect of concept maps between construct-by-self, construct-on- scaffold and construct by paper-and-pencil on students' comprehension in electricity. Forty-seven high school students were evaluated by a pre-post-test design. Four tenth grade science classes of students at a high school were assigned to three treatment groups. Assessment tests focused on whether the student has acquired the knowledge that is a part of the objectives using concept maps, but also find out what the students knows, understands, or is able to achieve on his own. Group I, individually concept mapped which was used to track their understanding of electricity. Group II, those who used fill in the blank concept map, within which some nodes and links were set as blanks for the scaffold. Group III, construct by paper-and-pencil with the assistance of the feedback. The findings revealed that fill in the blank concept maps on computers positively influenced concept learning compared to those who used individually generating concept maps. The two computer-based procedures are helpful for students in completing their concept maps than constructing with paper-and-pencil.Group III, construct by paper-and-pencil with the assistance of the feedback. Thin and very thin (less than 10 μm) liquid films driven by a forced gas/vapor flow (stratified or annular flows), i.e. shear-driven liquid films in a narrow channel is a promising candidate for the thermal management of advanced semiconductor devices in earth and space applications. Development of such technology requires significant advances in fundamental research, since the stability of joint flow of locally heated liquid film and gas is a rather complex problem. The paper focuses on the recent progress that has been achieved by the authors through conducting experiments. Experiments with water in flat channels with height of H = 1.2–2.0 mm show that a liquid film driven by the action of a gas flow is stable in a wide range of liquid/gas flow rates. Map of isothermal flow regime was plotted and the length of smooth region was measured. Even for sufficiently high gas flow rates an important thermocapillary effect on film dynamics occurs. Scenario of film rupture differs widely for different flow regimes. It is found that the critical heat flux for a shear driven film can be 10 times higher than that for a falling liquid film, and exceeds 400 W/cm2 in experiments with water for moderate liquid flow rates. This fact makes use of shear-driven liquid films promising in high heat flux chip cooling applications.

Abstract In this paper, we describe the technique of on-axis transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) in a scanning electron microscope and demonstrate its use in characterizing nanoscale crystal structures and defects in semiconductor materials and devices. We explain how we modified hardware and software to achieve an effective spatial resolution of 2 nm during orientation mapping without decreasing acquisition speed, indexing quality, and other performance parameters. The paper includes illustrations comparing sample-detector geometries for conventional EBSD, TKD, and on-axis TKD. It also presents examples of the types of images that can be obtained using on-axis TKD, including raw crystal orientation maps, diffraction patterns, pattern quality maps, time-resolved orientation maps showing microstructure evolution, and a sparse sample map showing the distribution of quantum dots on an electron transparent support film.

Abstract:
Abstract This study explores the feasibility of using the molecular dynamics computational technique to predict the thermal conductivity of solid thin films in the direction perpendicular to the film plane. The results show that thermal conductivity, as expected from thin-film experimental data and theoretical predictions, decreases as film thickness is reduced. In the large-size limit, this method yields thermal conductivities which asymptote to a value comparable to experimental data. The calculations modestly overpredict thermal conductivity, probably due to the use of a too-steep intermolecular potential. Most interestingly, an unusual wave effect is revealed for thin film thermal conductivity. This effect may be a manifestation of phonon wave interference analogous to the interference of light which determines the radiative properties of thin films. It is also found that there are some temperature and computational domain size limitations on the applicability of molecular dynamics to the study of solid systems. A regime map is developed which delineates the conditions necessary for molecular dynamics to produce physically meaningful results. This work shows that molecular dynamics, applied under the correct conditions, is a viable tool for calculating the thermal conductivity of solid thin films. More generally, this work demonstrates the potential of molecular dynamics for ascertaining microscale thermophysical properties in more complex structures.

Abstract:
This Open File presents national-scale mapping of ground ice conditions in Canada. The mapping depicts a first-order estimate of the combined volumetric percentage of excess ice in the top 5 m of permafrost from segregated, wedge, and relict ice. The estimates for the three ice types are based on modelling by O'Neill et al. (2019) (https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-13-753-2019), and informed by available published values of ground ice content and expert knowledge. The mapping offers an improved depiction of ground ice in Canada at a broad scale, incorporating current knowledge on the associations between geological and environmental conditions and ground ice type and abundance. It provides a foundation for hypothesis testing related to broad-scale controls on ground ice formation, preservation, and melt. Additional compilation of quantitative field data on ground ice and improvements to national-scale surficial geology mapping will allow further assessment and refinement of the representation of ground ice in Canada. Continued research will focus on improving the lateral and vertical representation of ground ice required for incorporation into Earth system models and decision-making. Spatial data files of the mapping are available as downloads with this Open File.

Digital recovery and analysis of Great Lakes legacy seismic data is a cost-effective method to generate the offshore broad scale surfaces pertinent to the surficial framework geology layer required as input by three-dimensional stratigraphic studies. This Open File describes the digital recovery of 1566 km of recently discovered single channel seismic reflection data collected in central and eastern Lake Erie in the summer of 1967. A legacy isopach map of sediment thickness, based on the 1967 data, has also been resurrected.

Hovav, Ran, Peggy Ozias-Akins, and Scott A. Jackson. The genetics of pod-filling in peanut under water-limiting conditions. United States Department of Agriculture, January 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2012.7597923.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Pod-filling, an important yield-determining stage is strongly influenced by water stress. This is particularly true for peanut (Arachishypogaea), wherein pods are developed underground and are directly affected by the water condition. Pod-filling in peanut has a significant genetic component as well, since genotypes are considerably varied in their pod-fill (PF) and seed-fill (SF) potential. The goals of this research were to: Examine the effects of genotype, irrigation, and genotype X irrigation on PF and SF. Detect global changes in mRNA and metabolites levels that accompany PF and SF. Explore the response of the duplicate peanut pod transcriptome to drought stress. Study how entire duplicated PF regulatory processes are networked within a polyploid organism. Discover locus-specific SNP markers and map pod quality traits under different environments. The research included genotypes and segregating populations from Israel and US that are varied in PF, SF and their tolerance to water deficit. Initially, an extensive field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of genotype, irrigation, and genotype X irrigation on PF and SF. Significant irrigation and genotypic effect was observed for the two main PF related traits, "seed ratio" and "dead-end ratio", demonstrating that reduction in irrigation directly influences the developing pods as a result of low water potential. Although the Irrigation × Genotype interaction was not statistically significant, one genotype (line 53) was found to be more sensitive to low irrigation treatments. Two RNAseq studies were simultaneously conducted in IL and the USA to characterize expression changes that accompany shell ("source") and seed ("sink") biogenesis in peanut. Both studies showed that SF and PF processes are very dynamic and undergo very rapid change in the accumulation of RNA, nutrients, and oil. Some genotypes differ in transcript accumulation rates, which can explain their difference in SF and PF potential; like cvHanoch that was found to be more enriched than line 53 in processes involving the generation of metabolites and energy at the beginning of seed development. Interestingly, an opposite situation was found in pericarp development, wherein rapid cell wall maturation processes were up-regulated in line 53. Although no significant effect was found for the irrigation level on seed transcriptome in general, and particularly on subgenomic assignment (that was found almost comparable to a 1:1 for A- and B- subgenomes), more specific homoeologous expression changes associated with particular biosynthesis pathways were found. For example, some significant A- and B- biases were observed in particular parts of the oil related gene expression network and several candidate genes with potential influence on oil content and SF were further examined. Substation achievement of the current program was the development and application of new SNP detection and mapping methods for peanut. Two major efforts on this direction were performed. In IL, a GBS approach was developed to map pod quality traits on Hanoch X 53 F2/F3 generations. Although the GBS approach was found to be less effective for our genetic system, it still succeeded to find significant mapping locations for several traits like testa color (linkage A10), number of seeds/pods (A5) and pod wart resistance (B7). In the USA, a SNP array was developed and applied for peanut, which is based on whole genome re-sequencing of 20 genotypes. This chip was used to map pod quality related traits in a Tifrunner x NC3033 RIL population. It was phenotyped for three years, including a new x-ray method to phenotype seed-fill and seed density. The total map size was 1229.7 cM with 1320 markers assigned. Based on this linkage map, 21 QTLs were identified for the traits 16/64 weight, kernel percentage, seed and pod weight, double pod and pod area. Collectively, this research serves as the first fundamental effort in peanut for understanding the PF and SF components, as a whole, and as influenced by the irrigation level. Results of the proposed study will also generate information and materials that will benefit peanut breeding by facilitating selection for reduced linkage drag during introgression of disease resistance traits into elite cultivars. Abstract:
The Rush Valley 30' x 60' quadrangle extends southwest and west from the greater Salt Lake City–Provo metropolitan area with land use varied between public, military, Indian reservation, and private. This 1:62,500-scale geologic map will aid the proper management of land, water, and other resources. The map area lies within the eastern Basin and Range Province. Mountain ranges are composed of unexposed basement rocks overlain by exposed Neoproterozoic through Triassic rocks that are about 10.4 miles (16.8 km) thick, and by numerous Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic units (~47 to 20 Ma). The intervening valleys include bedrock covered with Miocene-Pliocene? rocks (~11 to 4 Ma) and Neogene-Quaternary surficial deposits. The map area is on the southern flank of the Uinta-Tooele structural zone. This area is in the Charleston-Nebo (Provo) salient of the Sevier fold-thrust belt and some thrust faults are exposed, but the overall Sevier belt geometry is obscured by extensive Cenozoic cover and later faulting. Following Sevier deformation, calk-alkaline volcanism occurred from several Paleogene volcanic centers (42 to 25 Ma). Extensional tectonism created the distinctive basin and range topography from about 20 Ma to the present. Early extensional basin fill includes Miocene sedimentary and volcanic rocks followed by Pliocene-Holocene surficial deposits primarily from lacustrine and alluvial depositional environments. Valley areas were covered by late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, and deposits are associated with three levels of regional shorelines. Normal faults cut the ranges and are known to bound some valley margins where not concealed. Although deep drill hole data are relatively sparse, gravity data were used to help constrain basin geometries.

Abstract:
National tax administrations are increasingly investing in the digital facilities needed to make it possible for taxpayers to go online both to file their routine tax returns (e-filing) and remit the tax payments due (e-payment). These facilities potentially benefit both taxpayers and tax administrations. This paper first maps the landscape, explaining which filing and payment technologies are used for tax collection in Africa. We then examine why these technologies are not used to their full potential. Some constraints are on the demand side. These include taxpayers’ preferences for cash and in-person relations and low familiarity with and trust in digital technology. Other constraints lie in infrastructure deficits and broader political, regulatory, and institutional factors. Unlocking the full potential of e-filing and e-payment systems thus seems to depend on meeting several pre-conditions, including solid political will, sound regulatory frameworks, reliable payment infrastructure and adequate investment in human capital. However, there is relatively little reliable evidence of the actual effectiveness of e-services in tax collection. We conclude by outlining some research priorities.
