Abstract:
Since 2018 an unexpected number of earthquakes have been occurring offshore Mayotte, in the Mozambique Channel. They are linked to the eruption of the Fani Maoré submarine volcano. Using a recently-developed comprehensive automatic catalog, we explore two years of volcano-tectonic (VT) seismicity between March 2019 and March 2021 and analyse in detail the active structures of the magmatic plumbing system using ~33,000 events. The VT earthquakes highlight three magma storage zones and two aseismic conduits that had never been observed before. The temporal evolution of the seismicity reveals a probable regime change in March 2020. While before, the plumbing system reacted to the drainage of magma from a deep reservoir and to the migration of magma towards the seafloor, it is now responding to new migrations of fluids and to the redistribution of the stress-load across the system's pre-existing faults. This analysis is key to better understand long-term volcanism worldwide.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Background Mayotte is a French overseas territory with significant socio-economic and health challenges. This study updates the prevalence of hypertension in Mayotte to estimate the awareness, treatment and control of this disease and identify any associated factors. Methods Data were taken from the cross-sectional Unono Wa Maore survey conducted in Mayotte in 2019. Analyses were based on the adult population aged 18–69 years who underwent a clinical examination with at least two blood pressure measurements (n = 2620). Results In 2019, the prevalence of hypertension was estimated at 38.4% (36.1–40.7%) in the Mayotte population aged 18–69 years. The prevalence was similar in men (38.5%) and women (38.3%; P = 0.95). The prevalence of certain risk factors was high, with 75% of hypertensives being overweight or obese, 13% reporting diabetes and 69% being occupationally inactive. Among the hypertensives, 48% was aware of their diagnosis, with women more likely to be aware than men (P < 0.0001). Of those who were aware, 45% were treated pharmacologically and 49% reported engaging in physical activity to lower their blood pressure. The control rate was 30.2% among pharmacologically treated hypertensives. Overall, 80% of hypertensive patients had too high blood pressure during the survey’s clinical examination. Conclusion The prevalence of hypertension remains high in Mayotte, where certain risk factors like obesity are particularly common in the population. Awareness, treatment and control remain insufficient. Primary prevention measures, access to a healthy food, and screening and treatment of hypertension should be encouraged by targeting the most affected populations.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Located in southwestern Indian Ocean, Mayotte is a French territory, with a very specific demographic, social and health context. To date, epidemiological data on infections by hepatitis B (HBV), C (HCV), and delta (HDV) viruses in Mayotte have been sparse. We aimed to estimate, in the 15–69-year-old general population living in Mayotte, the prevalence of infections by hepatitis B (HBV), C (HCV), and delta (HDV) viruses and the distribution of HBV status: current infection with positive HBs antigen (Ag); resolved infection with positive HBc antibodies and negative HBsAg; immunisation by vaccination with only positive HBs antibodies; and no infection/no immunisation with negative markers. We also described the characteristics of infected people and assessed the determinants of lifetime HBV infection. Methods The Unono Wa Maore survey, implemented in a random sample of the general population in 2018–2019, consisted of an at-home collection of epidemiological data and venous blood samples. Detection of hepatitis B, C, and delta serological and molecular markers was performed. Results Among 5207 eligible people, 4643 responded to the questionnaire (89.2%), with 2917 being tested for HBV and HCV (62.8%). Estimated HBV status was as follows: current infection 3.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.3–3.9%) (n = 76); resolved infection 27.8% (95% CI: 25.8–29.9); immunisation by vaccination 27.7% (95% CI: 25.9–29.7); and no infection/no immunisation 41.5% (95% CI: 39.3–43.7). One participant was positive for HDV antibodies (Ab) (0.65%) with a negative HDV-RNA viral load. The risk of lifetime HBV infection was higher in men (adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR): 1.55, 95% CI: 1.29–1.89); in people aged 30–49 years (aPR: 3.83, 95% CI: 1.49–9.81) or 50–69 years (aPR: 4.52, 95% CI: 1.77–11.53) compared to those under 20; in individuals who reported no condom use during their first sexual intercourse (aPR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.01–2.14); and in those living in Dembeni-Mamoudzou (aPR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.09–1.80) compared to the West-Centre of Mayotte. Finally, six individuals were positive for HCV antibodies (0.21%), including three positive for HCV RNA. Conclusions Mayotte is an area of intermediate endemicity for HBV and low endemicity for HCV and HDV. With a prevalence of HBsAg 10 times higher than in mainland France, a high proportion of people susceptible to HBV infection, and a demographic, health, and social context that may favour its transmission, hepatitis B is a major public health concern in Mayotte.

Abstract:
As population-related climate change research increases, so does the need to nuance approaches to this complex phenomenon, including issues related to cultural and linguistic translations. To explore how climate change is understood in understudied societies, a case-study approach is taken to address social representations of climate change by inhabitants of a Maore village in the French island of Mayotte. The study explores how local fishers understand the issue when considering observed environmental changes. Based on analyses of 30 interviews, the study found that social representations and related climate change discourses are not well established, except for individuals in close contact with French institutions. Issues regarding local culture and language reveal the importance of understanding the different components of climate change. Climate change communication and awareness-raising on the island are explored, as well as considerations of culturally and linguistically complex settings with a Global North/Global South interface.

"Resonances of Fluid‐Filled Cracks With Complex Geometry and Application to Very Long Period (VLP) Seismic Signals at Mayotte Submarine Volcano." Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth 129, no. 3 (March 2024). http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2023jb027844.

Abstract:
AbstractFluid‐filled cracks sustain a slow guided wave (Krauklis wave or crack wave) whose resonant frequencies are widely used for interpreting long period (LP) and very long period (VLP) seismic signals at active volcanoes. Significant efforts have been made to model this process using analytical developments along an infinite crack or numerical methods on simple crack geometries. In this work, we develop an efficient hybrid numerical method for computing resonant frequencies of complex‐shaped fluid‐filled cracks and networks of cracks and apply it to explain the ratio of spectral peaks in the VLP signals from the Fani Maoré submarine volcano that formed in Mayotte in 2018. By coupling triangular boundary elements and the finite volume method, we successfully handle complex geometries and achieve computational efficiency by discretizing solely the crack surfaces. The resonant frequencies are directly determined through eigenvalue analysis. After proper verification, we systematically analyze the resonant frequencies of rectangular and elliptical cracks, quantifying the effect of aspect ratio and crack stiffness. We then discuss theoretically the contribution of fluid viscosity and seismic radiation to energy dissipation. Finally, we obtain a crack geometry that successfully explains the characteristic ratio between the first two modes of the VLP seismic signals from the Fani Maoré submarine volcano in Mayotte. Our work not only reveals rich eigenmodes in complex‐shaped cracks but also contributes to illuminating the subsurface plumbing system of active volcanoes. The developed model is readily applicable to crack wave resonances in other geological settings, such as glacier hydrology and hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Saif, Youssouf Ahamada. Abstract:
This thesis studies according to a pragmatist point of view the media coverage as a public problem of the “migratory crisis” in Mayotte following “illegal immigration” which causes shipwrecks in the waters of Maore (Mayotte), an island of the Comoros under French administration. This thesis conceives the public problems as a sensitive human experience of a crisis of the collective situation carried out by individuals and associations who constitute themselves as publics and whose engagement of the latter in a dynamic of visibility of the problem that affects them will transform this one in an obvious preoccupation of the public authorities. In the constitution of the public problem of the migration crisis, the press plays a central role, in making visible the stories of adhesion, approval or indifference which bring together the different actors of this crisis. With a pragmatist approach, this study tries to answer this essential problem : How did the problem of the "migration crisis" in Maore come about ? How does the written press participate in this configuration and how does it represent the social conflict that has characterized it since its emergence in the public space ? What is the position of the French and Comorian press in the treatment of the “migration crisis” in Maore and on the establishment of the “Visa Balladur”, responsible for more than 10,000 deaths between 1995 and 2012. The fundamental hypothesis of our reflection is that public problems, such as that of the “migration crisis” in Mahora, constitute a capital element in the transformation of Mahorese and Comorian society. This research is part of a methodological approach based on direct observations, interviews for the reconstruction of stories and testimonies conducted with victims and journalists, in the Comoros Islands, supplemented by a media corpus of speeches by political actors and civil society of Comoros and France
