Abstract:
This essay explores a critical dialogue between methods and conceptions of cultural techniques—the second wave of media archaeology—and a case in contemporary Chinese documentary. I examine filmmaker Mao Chenyu, who is also an organic farmer, a critical thinker and writer, and a film exhibitor. Mao provides an intriguing case of how ethnography, ecology, and cosmology intertwine; how media art can take the form of media activism by redefining its boundaries and exhibition space; and how media art can be rethought by replacing its usual focus on media as object with a focus on media as space, community, and social process. By engaging Mao's film practice and critical writings, I test the promise and limits of cultural techniques to reopen the question of culture and public sphere without privileging the a priori of technical operations as the programmability of society.

Abstract:
Abstract The key players in the current immuno checkpoint inhibition (ICI) treatment are antibodies or bispecific antibodies targeting PD-1. PD-L1 or CTLA-4. While these drugs provided a small number of patients with tumor shrinking (ORR between 10-30%) as a single agent, they did not lead to desirable treatment survival as measured by OS/PFS. Many combination studies are in progress in both preclinical and clinical settings to find an effective way to achieve prolonged OS/PFS in ICI treatment. Herein, we would like to report our most recent findings of combination of a PD-1/CTLA-4 bispecific antibody with our orally active, clinical stage PD-L1 inhibitor MAX-10181 in animal model study. The key observations are as follow: •The PD-1/CTLA-4 bispecific antibody group (n=10, average starting tumor volume= 68 mm3) demonstrated (a) 2 tumors (20%) in the slow volume shrinking mode with volume between 60-20 mm3, and (b) 4 tumors (40%) in the fast volume growing mode with volume above 500 mm3 •The combination group (n=10, average starting tumor volume= 68 mm3) demonstrated (a) 2 tumors (20%) in the fast volume shrinking mode with volume less than 20 mm3, (b) 1 tumor (10%) in the slow volume shrinking mode with volume between 60-20 mm3, and (c) only 1 tumor (10%) in the fast volume growing mode with volume above 500 mm3 These results indicate the potential of prolonged OS/PFS to combine PD-1/CTLA-4 bispecific antibody with orally active, small molecule MAX-10181 which recently completed Phase I trial. We will present the full study results in the coming AACR meeting. Abstract:
2576 Background: Sintilimab plus oxaliplatin and capecitabine (XELOX) has become the standard of care in patients (pts) with untreated advanced, recurrent, or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma (G/GEJ AC) in China. Dual inhibition of PD-1 and lymphocyte-activation gene 3 (LAG-3) may further improve anti-tumor effect. The preliminary safety and efficacy data of IBI110 plus sintilimab and XELOX in pts with first-line G/GEJ AC were previously presented (Chenyu Mao et al. ASCO 2022). Here, we presented updated safety and efficacy results of this study. Methods: This phase Ib study enrolled patients with previously untreated, unresectable, locally advanced or recurrent/metastatic HER2-negative GC/GEJ AC. Pts received IBI110 200mg IV Q3W and sintilimab 200mg IV Q3W plus XELOX (oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 Q3W and capecitabine 1000mg mg/m2/time twice daily [BID]) until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity or death. The primary objectives were to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the combination therapy per RECIST v1.1. Results: As of data cutoff January 9th 2023, 17 pts were assessed as evaluable (median age: 61 years; ECOG PS=1: 14 pts; all gastric cancer). All pts (17/17, 100%) experienced treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) of any grade, and the most commonly TRAEs were neutrophil count decreased (64.7%), white blood cell count decreased (52.9%), platelet count decreased (52.9%). Grade ≥ 3 TRAEs occurred in 11 pts (64.7%), the most frequent grade ≥ 3 TRAEs were consistent with TRAEs of any grade. Investigator-assessed immune-mediated adverse events (irAEs) occurred in 10 pts (58.8%). Grade ≥ 3 irAEs occurred in 3 pts (17.6%), all led to discontinuation. No treatment-related death occurred. As data cutoff, among 17 efficacy-evaluable pts, the unconfirmed and confirmed objective response rate (ORR) were 88.2% (95% CI, 63.6-98.5) and 64.7% (95% CI, 38.3-85.8), respectively. The disease control rate (DCR) was 94.1% (95% CI, 71.3-99.9). With a median follow up of 13.1 months (95% CI, 7.1-NC), the median duration of response (DoR) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 11.6 months (95% CI, 2.5-14.4) and 12.9 months (95% CI, 3.8-15.8), respectively. The median overall survival (OS) was not reached, and the 12-months OS rate was 70.6% (95% CI, 43.1-86.6). Conclusions: IBI110 in combination with sintilimab and XELOX demonstrated manageable safety and encouraging efficacy results in patients with first-line gastric adenocarcinoma. This is the first positive trial to show clinical benefits of a LAG3 plus PD-1 inhibitor combined with chemotherapy for this population. Clinical trial information: NCT04085185 .

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This work presents the first search for RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in four of the ultrafaint systems imaged by the Dark Energy Survey using SOAR/Goodman and Blanco/DECam imagers. We have detected two RRLs in the field of Grus I, none in Kim 2, one in Phoenix II, and four in Grus II. With the detection of these stars, we accurately determine the distance moduli for these ultrafaint dwarf satellite galaxies; μ0 = 20.51 ± 0.10 mag (D⊙ = 127 ± 6 kpc) for Grus I and μ0 = 20.01 ± 0.10 mag (D⊙ = 100 ± 5 kpc) for Phoenix II. These measurements are larger than previous estimations by Koposov et al. and Bechtol et al., implying larger physical sizes; 5 per cent for Grus I and 33 per cent for Phoenix II. For Grus II, of the four RRLs detected, one is consistent with being a member of the galactic halo (D⊙ = 24 ± 1 kpc, μ0 = 16.86 ± 0.10 mag), another is at D⊙ = 55 ± 2 kpc (μ0 = 18.71 ± 0.10 mag), which we associate with Grus II, and the two remaining at D⊙ = 43 ± 2 kpc (μ0 = 18.17 ± 0.10 mag). Moreover, the appearance of a subtle red horizontal branch in the colour–magnitude diagram of Grus II at the same brightness level of the latter two RRLs, which are at the same distance and in the same region, suggests that a more metal-rich system may be located in front of Grus II. The most plausible scenario is the association of these stars with the Chenab/Orphan Stream. Finally, we performed a comprehensive and updated analysis of the number of RRLs in dwarf galaxies. This allows us to predict that the method of finding new ultrafaint dwarf galaxies using two or more clumped RRLs will work only for systems brighter than MV ∼ −6 mag.

Abstract:
This dissertation wishes to contribute to the studies about the independent documentary film creations in contemporary China which confront national history. In an intellectual and artistic context, where the exhumation and transmission of the buried facts are repressed or bereft of public representation, we would like to observe three exemplary cases in this regard : HU Jie, Folk Memory Project, and MAO Chenyu. Our study will try to characterise the different propositions and the principal gestures in their experimentations of documentary writing style. For HU Jie, the principal gesture is also the seminal gesture of classical documentary filmmaking : to establish the facts. Based on collected testimonials and archival footage, HU Jie explores in his practice how the subjects of his films and the historical facts would come to shape intelligibly. Folk Memory Project is an ongoing participatory documentary experience that engages amateur filmmakers or citizens to go back to their families’ rural villages, and film elders’ memories about difficult times. The project sees its practice as creation, investigation, transmission, but also intimate introspection. In the case of MAO Chenyu, who centers his work in the rural region and China’s peasantry, with his innovative approach that explores perpetually about the possible articulation between cinema and other practices, his work provides an ethnographic thinking to history writing. These three practices all participate to the critical approach of history writing in sounds and images, which reclaims history's collective and plurality becoming

Abstract:
Tantric practices of meditation in retreat have been prevalent across the Tibetan Plateau since at least a millennium, yet their highly elitist and clandestine nature has hitherto prevented their exploration and analysis. This thesis defines the pre-modern structure of the hermitic tradition in Khams, codified by the nonsectarian Ris med movement, but devotes most attention to the examination of its revival in contemporary Khams under the Chinese communist rule through the case study of the ’Ba’ rom bKa’ brgyud “meditation school of La phyi” (La phyi sgom grwa), centered around the cotton-clad gtum mo-accomplisher Tshul khrims mthar phyin (b. 1947), eulogized as the contemporary embodiment of Mi la ras pa. The main claim of this dissertation is that the ritual and social power of the Tibetan hermit lies in the performance, embodiment and final reconciliation of paradox – generally attaining soteriological goals in mundane life and specifically, resolving the dilemmas of Tibetans during times of perceived crisis. Acts of renunciation become an affirmative strategy, activating networks that have sustained hermits, their lineages, practices, and training venues for centuries. The reason for social empowerment of hermits lies in the radical nature of their training, which by social agreement is not only bound to generate liberation and enlightenment, but is even able to yield fruit “in this very body and life,” in emulation of Mi la ras pa. Such transformation of the body through meditation is crucial to the hermit’s ability to reconcile contradictions and to establish hermitages as venues for effective identity construction and spheres of autonomy and power, extracted from local history and sacred geography. Especially in times of crisis, hermitages tend to form networks and evolve into a movement for counter-culture, which circumvents or speaks against the established power structures of the day, but at the same time, maintains its essentially religious character.

This thesis examines how the motif of drifting interweaves realism and fantasy in Singing Chen’s God Man Dog (2008). In both physical and spiritual senses, the drifting gods, wandering people and floating homes obscure the concept of “home” and then generate a field of “non-places”. I argue that through Singing Chen’s cinematic politics and aesthetics, the concept of characters’ shelter or home is somehow distinct from what it is imagined in a traditional sense. This thesis consists of five sections. The first section focuses on how the diverse religious statues and idols exemplify the secular modernity of Taiwan and how the film makes palpable Chris Berry’s concept of Haunted Realism. The second and third sections examine how living space in a capitalist society becomes what Marc Augé terms “non-place” and home becomes unhomely. In section four and five, I analyze the commodification and values in Chen’s film as well as the relation between drifting and “home”.

The structure of piano nocturne was formed by English composer John Field(1782-1837) in early nineteenth century. Although characteristics of Field’s nocturnes were reserved, the structure of piano nocturnes became more flexible after Field’s works as each composer had his/her own style. Three nocturnes were analyzed in this interpretive study. The first one, Chopin’s 《nocturne》in c minor, Op. 48 No.1, is the most splendid and dramatic one among Chopin’s nocturnes. The second one, Fauré’s 《nocturne》in E-flat major, Op. 36., is one of the popular nocturnes by Fauré. Lastly, Chen, Mao-Shuen’s 《nocturne》No. 1 is a work with flavors of Chinese music and piano nocturnes. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the origin and development of piano nocturnes. Chapters 2 to 4 contain descriptions of the backgrounds and styles of the three composers, creations of the three nocturnes, and performance interpretations. Based on analyses completed in previous chapters, similarities and differences of the three nocturnes are summarized in chapter 5. The similarities are: (1) the nocturnes have alterations of accompaniment forms in each sections, (2) the nocturnes employ irregular rhythms, (3) same motifs are repeated in the nocturnes, and (4) ABA ternary forms are used in the three nocturnes. The differences are: (1) each nocturne has its own style, (2) each nocturne uses different time signatures, (3) each nocturne utilizes different tempos, and (4) each nocturne has its own use of expression marks. It is hoped that by way of having an in-depth understanding of the three nocturnes, better interpretations of the three nocturnes are presented while performing them.

Sandler, Ian. "Mining frequent highly-correlated item-pairs at very low support levels." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3756.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to extract frequent pairs from a set of transactions is one of the fundamental building blocks of data mining. When the number of items in a given transaction is relatively small the problem is trivial. Even when dealing with millions of transactions it is still trivial if the number of unique items in the transaction set is small. The problem becomes much more challenging when we deal with millions of transactions, each containing hundreds of items that are part of a set of millions of potential items. Especially when we are looking for highly correlated results at extremely low support levels. For 25 years the Direct Hashing and Pruning Park Chen Yu (PCY) algorithm has been the principal technique used when there are billions of potential pairs that need to be counted. In this paper we propose a new approach that allows us to take full advantage of both multi-core and multi-CPU availability which works in cases where PCY fails, with excellent performance scaling that continues even when the number of processors, unique items and items per transaction are at their highest. We believe that our approach has much broader applicability in the field of co-occurrence counting, and can be used to generate much more interesting results when mining very large data sets.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with miniature poems, which appeared at the beginning of the May fourth movement, as a genre of modern chinese poetry and was redoscovered by the misty poets after the Cultural revolution. Part of a brief introduction to the literary- historical contexts of both periods are short biographies of two representative poets of this genre, Bing Xin and Gu Cheng. Eventually the form and themes of miniature poems are introduced. The main part of this thesis is a comparative study of Bing Xin's and Gu Cheng's miniature poems. The thesis concludes, that Gu Cheng refines and eleborates the artistic value of the miniature poem. Part of the study is a criticism of primary source, as well as a summary of the current state of research. Key words: Modern poetry, Bing Xin, Gu Cheng, místy poetry, May fourth movement

Abstract:
The present master's thesis deals with an introduction of Sophia H. Chen Zen (Chen Hengzhe), the first female professor at Beijing University, who in her life and work represents the generation of May Fourth intellectuals, who were educated in traditional scholarship, but who also recieved modern western education. Western scholarship filled these intellectuals with enthusiasm and they were eagerly introducing it into China. Chen Hengzhe grew up in a traditional scholar family, and since her childhood she longed for education. This desire was fulfilled by winning one of the first Boxer Indemnity Scholarship opened for women. She spent six years on her studies in the United States, where she met some of the leaders of the New Culture Movement (merging with the May Fourth Movement) like Hu Shi, or her future husband Ren Hongjun. Chen Hengzhe is also remembered as a writer of the first baihua-written story, in the early beginning of chinese literary movement. But the main field of Chen Hengzhe was history. Using her knowledge and teaching experience, she wrote one of the first histories of the west in China. Exactly in the analysis of her historical writing lies the center of our thesis. The biggest part concerns with Chen Hengzhe's history textbook and its historical and cultural context of early...

Abstract:
Chapter 3 joins Fifth Generation Chinese director Chen Kaige on his pilgrimages to the Chinese heartland in Shaanxi and Yunnan Provinces while shooting on-location for Yellow Earth (1984) and King of the Children (1987), where he wrestled reflexively with his awareness of the neocolonial politics of “experiencing life.” Through archival research and close textual analysis, this chapter reconstructs two parallel journeys to the rural associated with these productions — one diegetic and the other extra-diegetic. Just as the films’ protagonists were “sent-down” to the countryside, Chen Kaige toured Shaanxi and Yunnan with his production crew during the films' pre-production. When read together, these journeys map rural China as a haunted psycho-geography, where both Chen and the films' characters learned to acknowledge their ultimately tenuous connection with the collective unconscious supposedly enshrined in the PRC’s most sacred historical landmarks. More broadly, by reading the films’ journey narratives as allegories of Chen’s own pilgrimages, I show that Chen’s place making not only interrogates the coherence of official frameworks of nation building under Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, but also ushers in a new discursive construct of the auteur as an individualistic and semi-autonomous creative subject.

Zhang, Hongbin, Shahal Abbo, Weidong Chen, Amir Sherman, Dani Shtienberg, and Frederick Muehlbauer. Integrative Physical and Genetic Mapping of the Chickpea Genome for Fine Mapping and Analysis of Agronomic Traits. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2010.7592122.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Chickpea is the third most important pulse crop in the world and ranks first in the Middle East; however, it has been subjected to only limited research in modern genomics. In the first period of this project (US-3034-98R) we constructed two large-insert BAC and BIBAC libraries, developed 325 SSR markers and mapped QTLs controlling ascochyta blight resistance (ABR) and days to first flower (DTF). Nevertheless, the utilities of these tools and results in gene discovery and marker-assisted breeding are limited due to the absence of an essential platform. The goals of this period of the project were to use the resources and tools developed in the first period of the project to develop a BAC/BIBAC physical map for chickpea and using it to identify BAC/BIBACcontigs containing agronomic genes of interest, with an emphasis on ABR and DTF, and develop DNA markers suitable for marker-assisted breeding. Toward these goals, we proposed: 1) Fingerprint ~50,000 (10x) BACs from the BAC and BIBAC libraries, assemble the clones into a genome-wide BAC/BIBAC physical map, and integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Zhang, USA); 2) fine-map ABR and DTFQTLs and enhance molecular tools for chickpea genetics and breeding (Shahal, Sherman and DaniShtienberg, Israel; Chen and Muehlbauer; USA); and 3) integrate the BAC/BIBAC map with the existing chickpea genetic maps (Sherman, Israel; Zhang and Chen, USA). For these objectives, a total of $460,000 was requested originally, but a total of $300,000 was awarded to the project. We first developed two new BAC and BIBAC libraries, Chickpea-CME and Chickpea- CHV. The chickpea-CMEBAC library contains 22,272 clones, with an average insert size of 130 kb and equivalent to 4.0 fold of the chickpea genome. The chickpea-CHVBIBAC library contains 38,400 clones, with an average insert size of 140 kb and equivalent to 7.5 fold of the chickpea genome. The two new libraries (11.5 x), along with the two BAC (Chickpea-CHI) and BIBAC (Chickpea-CBV) libraries (7.1 x) constructed in the first period of the project, provide libraries essential for chickpea genome physical mapping and many other genomics researches. Using these four libraries we then developed the proposed BAC/BIBAC physical map of chickpea. A total of 67,584 clones were fingerprinted, and 64,211 (~11.6 x) of the fingerprints validated and used in the physical map assembly. The physical map consists of 1,945 BAC/BIBACcontigs, with each containing an average of 39.2 clones and having an average physical length of 559 kb. The contigs collectively span ~1,088 Mb, being 1.49 fold of the 740- Mb chickpea genome. Third, we integrated the physical map with the two existing chickpea genetic maps using a total of 172 (124 + 48) SSR markers. Fourth, we identified tightly linked markers for ABR-QTL1, increased marker density at ABR-QTL2 and studied the genetic basis of resistance to pod abortion, a major problem in the east Mediterranean, caused by heat stress. Finally, we, using the integrated map, isolated the BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to QTL4.1, QTL4.2 and QTL8 for ABR and QTL8 for DTF. The integrated BAC/BIBAC map resulted from the project will provide a powerful platform and tools essential for many aspects of advanced genomics and genetics research of this crop and related species. These includes, but are not limited to, targeted development of SNP, InDel and SSR markers, high-resolution mapping of the chickpea genome and its agronomic genes and QTLs, sequencing and decoding of all genes of the genome using the next-generation sequencing technology, and comparative genome analysis of chickpea versus other legumes. The DNA markers and BAC/BIBACcontigs containing or closely linked to ABR and DTF provide essential tools to develop SSR and SNP markers well-suited for marker-assisted breeding of the traits and clone their corresponding genes. The development of the tools and knowledge will thus promote enhanced and substantial genetic improvement of the crop and related legumes.

Abstract:
This rapid literature review finds that women have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 in several ways. As the Covid-19 pandemic began, it was widely predicted that women would face worse outcomes than men in many spheres. This was based on evidence of pre-existing inequalities (e.g. the high share of women in informal work) and evidence from earlier disease outbreaks such as Ebola. Evidence from the past year and a half supports the idea that women have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 in many of the issues investigated for this report. A wide-ranging World Bank review of evidence from April 2020 to April 2021 states that “women often appear to have lost out more than men economically and socially” (Nieves et al., 2021, p. 4). It was not possible to find evidence on the effect of Covid-19 on women’s role in the green economy and the effects of climate change (beyond calls for inclusive green growth), or on gender stereotyping in the media (although there is a small amount of literature on perceptions of women leaders during the pandemic). In all cases, the effect of Covid-19 and measures to suppress it have directly or indirectly continued or worsened pre-existing inequalities. In some instances, Covid-19 has created distinct difficulties for women (e.g. lockdowns and increased domestic violence). This report has found no evidence of Covid-19 improving the position of women in the areas of interest surveyed, beyond possible benefits from working from home for some women in high-income countries; and some suggestions that female leadership during the pandemic may lead to better perceptions of women (Piazza & Diaz, 2020). Studies also point to the intersection of gender with other factors, such as caste and ethnicity, leading to worse outcomes (Chen et al., 2021; Kabeer et al., 2021). In many cases, migrant women and women with disabilities are at an increased disadvantage. The report focuses on evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and G7 members. It is not comprehensive but surveys the available evidence focusing on global, regional or synthesis evidence to provide a more representative coverage. It, therefore, does not cover every context or provide any country case studies and overlooks variations in some countries in favour of broader trends.
