Abstract:
Abstract Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a group of highly specialised bacteria specifically adapted to a diverse range of habitats. They are found in the gut of humans and other animals, in many food fermentations, and on plants. Their natural specialisation in close relation to human activities make them particularly interesting from an industrial point of view. They are relevant not only for traditional food fermentations, but also as probiotics, potential therapeutics and cell factories for the production of many different products. Many new tools and methods are being developed to analyse and modify these microorganisms. This review shall give an overview highlighting some of the most striking characteristics of lactic acid bacteria and our approaches to harness their potential in many respects – from home made food to industrial chemical production, from probiotic activities to the most modern cancer treatments and vaccines.

Abstract:
There are different kinds of marketing, for example public relations and exhibit marketing. Exhibit marketing is a part of the study of marketing and sales. A function studied under the heading of exhibit marketing is the trade show. It’s a marketing event that brings manufacturers, suppliers and related services from a given industry to a single location to exhibit products/services. People working at trade shows are called exhibit marketers. They have different tasks and different levels of engagement. This paper has the ambition to describe exhibit marketing as a profession and whether students would be able to work at a trade show and why. Data were collected with a survey with a sample of 234 students. The age distributions were overrepresented of people between the ages of 16 to 25. The survey shows that most students could imagine working at a trade show. Moreover the survey shows that it seems to be more common among females rather than among males. One main reason why students could imagine working at a trade show is because they like to have different tasks. The result of the study is that the profession has many different tasks. It's about so much more than just standing and talking in a booth. An exhibitor must be able to handle many tasks such as stress level, customer relations and planning etc. Most students responded that they could handle work under stress.

Abstract:
Current task-centric many-core schedulers share a “naive” view of processor architecture; a view that does not care about its thermal, architectural or power consuming properties. Future processor will be more heterogeneous than what we see today, and following Moore’s law of transistor doubling, we foresee an increase in power consumption and thus temperature. Thermal stress can induce errors in processors, and so a common way to counter this is by slowing the processor down; something task-centric schedulers should strive to avoid. The Thermal-Task-Interleaving scheduling algorithm proposed in this paper takes both the application temperature behavior and architecture into account when making decisions. We show that for a mixed workload, our scheduler outperforms some of the standard, architecture-unaware scheduling solutions existing today.

In a job shop production environment, production scheduling is an important issue. Orders have to work with machines to resolve the scheduling problems in order to achieve the best performance. This study takes advantages of the characteristics of multi-agent system, such as autonomous, coordination and negotiation; we can find the better solution for dispatching task from order to machine through the communication and negotiation between the order agents and machine agents. This study also considers machines having multiple manufacturing capabilities that represent some factories with machines having more than two manufacturing capabilities. This thesis uses the Java language to implement a multi-agent system with multiple manufacturing capabilities. Issues of order agents are price and completion time; whereas issues of machine agents are profit and machine utilization. Using ten combinations of weights of issues between the order and machine agents, we run experiments for performance indices of makespan, flowtime, machine utilization, and machine profit. Results tell that the system with multiple manufacturing capabilities has better results for all the performance indices except for some special situations. In addition, this study adjusts weights for issues during negotiation, which not only represents the coordination characteristic of agent, but also illustrates that different weights affect performances. Especially, when there is a conflict between the order agent and machine agent, the performance becomes worse.

(9183533), Nathan M. Hicks. "A Variability Analysis of Grading Open-Ended Tasks with Rubrics Across Many Graders." Thesis, 2020.

Find full text
Abstract:
Grades serve as one of the primary indicators of student learning, directing subsequent actions for students, instructors, and administrators, alike. Therefore, grade validity—that is, the extent to which grades communicate a meaningful and credible representation of what they purport to measure—is of utmost importance. However, a grade cannot be valid if one cannot trust that it will consistently and reliably result in the same value, regardless of who makes a measure or when they make it. Unfortunately, such reliability becomes increasingly challenging to achieve with larger class sizes, especially when utilizing multiple evaluators, as is often the case with mandatory introductory courses at large universities. Reliability suffers further when evaluating open-ended tasks, as are prevalent in authentic, high-quality engineering coursework.

This study explores grading reliability in the context of a large, multi-section engineering course. Recognizing the number of people involved and the plethora of activities that affect grading outcomes, the study adopts a systems approach to conduct a human reliability analysis using the Functional Resonance Analysis Method. Through this method, a collection of data sources, including course materials and observational interviews with undergraduate teaching assistant graders, are synthesized to produce a general model for how actions vary and affect subsequent actions within the system under study. Using a course assignment and student responses, the model shows how differences in contextual variables affect expected actions within the system. Next, the model is applied to each of the observational interviews with undergraduate teaching assistants to demonstrate how these actions occur in practice and to compare graders to one another and with expected behaviors. These results are further related to the agreement in system outcomes, or grades, assigned by each grader to guide analysis of how actions within the system affect its outcome.

The results of this study connect and elaborate upon previous models of grader cognition by analyzing the phenomenon in engineering, a previously unexplored context. The model presented can be easily generalized and adapted to smaller systems with fewer actors to understand sources of variability and potential threats to outcome reliability. The analysis of observed outcome instantiations guides a set of recommendations for minimizing grading variability.

Freedman, Shoshana. "Too many kings in the castle : art therapy with a 7-year-old boy negotiating the Oedipal phase and other normative developmental tasks." Thesis, 2006. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/8972/1/MR16240.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper details the process of art therapy with a latency-aged boy experiencing mild to moderate adjustment difficulties and negotiating conflicts associated with the Oedipal complex. A discussion of Freud's Oedipus complex (as cited in Ellenberger, 1970) and associated theories is provided. The case study format, which includes descriptions of the client's sessions and artworks, is used to elucidate the use of art therapy in addressing developmental issues. The literature review explores potential links between Oedipal conflicts, object relations, and a related application of psychodynamic art therapy. While current literature emphasizes the use of art therapy with children facing more severe, pathological difficulties, it is contended that art therapy can provide an excellent means of addressing and supporting challenges and transitions associated with children's normative psychosexual development. It is proposed that three theoretical constructs, a Neo-Freudian approach, attachment theory, and object relations theory, may be used complimentarily to inform and enhance psychodynamic art therapy practice. Discussion of the client's therapeutic process focuses on his movement towards self-definition as he redefines his object world through creative expression and increased agency, facilitated by art therapy. His process points to the efficacy of a psychodynamic, developmentally oriented art therapy approach.

Abstract:
Methods and models of optimization of solutions under many criteria are considered, which are conditioned by modern tasks to improve the operation of supply chains and logistics systems. Attention is paid to their specifics in relation to the tasks of organizing transport supply support. The anomalous phenomena of "blindness" to the indicators of individual particular criteria and the phenomena of "blocking" the choice of alternatives when optimizing such systems are analyzed. Special modifications of traditional selection criteria for optimization are presented, allowing to eliminate these phenomena in order to more effectively adapt the selected best solution to the preferences of the decision-maker. The analysis of filtering possibilities of the initially specified alternatives is given so that optimization procedures can be implemented in real time. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For students of institutions of higher education. Abstract:
Today’s university lecturers are faced with the challenge of educating students to see beyond the limits of their own discipline and to come up with innovative solutions to societal challenges. Many lecturers would like to put more emphasis on teaching students how to integrate diverse forms of knowledge, work together in teams, critically reflect and become self-regulated learners. These lecturers are breaking down the silos of scientific disciplines as well as the barriers between academia and society and responding to the changing role of universities in society. Just as teaching and learning are ready for change, so is assessment. In this book, we call for an assessment strategy with a greater emphasis on assessment for and assessment as learning, with a focus on giving powerful feedback and the use of authentic assessment tasks as well as alignment with the intended learning outcomes and your pedagogical beliefs. If you are looking for ways to assess integration, collaboration, reflection, and critical thinking rather than only assessing the acquisition of knowledge, the examples in this handbook are inspiring initiatives that can point you to new directions in assessment.

Abstract:
Acceptability Judgement Tasks have been utilized in many areas of linguistics for a long time, and they are particularly useful in New Englishes contexts in measuring which local forms of English are acceptable to users. In light of this, this chapter examines the acceptability of Nigerian English (NigE) features using Acceptability Judgement Tasks. This study’s overarching goal is to show how NigE speakers’ acceptability ratings of and acceptability discourse about features of NigE index their orientations towards this variety and its characteristic features. The discussion of this analysis shows that it is beneficial to analyze the data emerging from Acceptability Judgement Tasks in both quantitative and qualitative ways.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter looks at other aspects of the “quantification landscape” that have not been covered in the previous chapters, and discusses the evolution of quantification research, from its beginnings to the most recent quantification-based “shared tasks”; the landscape of quantification-based, publicly available software libraries; visualization tools specifically oriented to displaying the results of quantification-based experiments; and other tasks in data science that present important similarities with quantification. This chapter also presents the results of experiments, that we have carried out ourselves, in which we compare many of the methods discussed in Chapter 2 on a common testing infrastructure.

Abstract:
AbstractConducting simulation studies within a model-based framework is a complex process, in which many different concerns must be considered. Central tasks include the specification of the simulation model, the execution of simulation runs, the conduction of systematic simulation experiments, and the management and documentation of the model’s context. In this chapter, we look into how these concerns can be separated and handled by applying domain-specific languages (DSLs), that is, languages that are tailored to specific tasks in a specific application domain. We demonstrate and discuss the features of the approach by using the modelling language ML3, the experiment specification language SESSL, and PROV, a graph-based standard to describe the provenance information underlying the multi-stage process of model development.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, federal and state restrictions hindered many aspects of clinical trials, such as recruiting patients, which made completing required research tasks difficult or impossible. Many existing guidance documents and policies were redesigned rapidly during the pandemic to accommodate COVID-19-related emergencies. Such policies laid the foundation for change in clinical research. The purpose of this clinical research regulatory review is to determine how regulatory bodies such as the Food and Drug Administration, Office of Human Research Protections, and institutional review boards have responded to challenges in running clinical trials during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
Computers have become a vital part of the control of pipeline compressors and compressor stations. For many tasks, computers have helped to improve accuracy, reliability, and safety, and have reduced operating costs. Computers excel at repetitive, precise tasks that humans perform poorly - calculation, measurement, statistical analysis, control, etc. Computers are used to perform these type of precise tasks at compressor stations: engine / turbine speed control, ignition control, horsepower estimation, or control of complicated sequences of events during startup and/or shutdown. For other tasks, however, computers perform very poorly at tasks that humans find to be trivial. A discussion of the differences in the way humans and computer process information is crucial to an understanding of the field of artificial intelligence. In this project, several artificial intelligence/ intelligent control systems were examined: heuristic search techniques, adaptive control, expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. Of these, neural networks showed the most potential for use on large bore engines because of their ability to recognize patterns in incomplete, noisy data. Two sets of experimental tests were conducted to test the predictive capabilities of neural networks. The first involved predicting the ignition timing from combustion pressure histories; the best networks responded within a specified tolerance level 90% to 98.8% of the time. In the second experiment, neural networks were used to predict NOx, A/F ratio, and fuel consumption. NOx prediction accuracy was 91.4%, A/F ratio accuracy was 82.9%, and fuel consumption accuracy was 52.9%. This report documents the assessment of the state of the art of artificial intelligence for application to the monitoring and control of large-bore natural gas engines.

Abstract:
Many low-income countries face a shortage of trained medical doctors, especially in rural areas. This situation has detrimental effects on healthcare outcomes for the population. Non-physician clinicians are trained to perform some tasks usually carried out by doctors, including obstetric care. In some countries, non-physician clinicians are authorized to carry out caesarean sections. As their training and salary are lower and their retention is better, these clinicians could offer an alternative to doctors for caesarean section in low-income countries.

Full text
Abstract:
Facial recognition technology is named one of the main trends of recent years. It’s wide range of applications, such as access control, biometrics, video surveillance and many other interactive humanmachine systems. Facial landmarks can be described as key characteristics of the human face. Commonly found landmarks are, for example, eyes, nose or mouth corners. Analyzing these key points is useful for a variety of computer vision use cases, including biometrics, face tracking, or emotion detection. Different methods produce different facial landmarks. Some methods use only basic facial landmarks, while others bring out more detail. We use 68 facial markup, which is a common format for many datasets. Cloud computing creates all the necessary conditions for the successful implementation of even the most complex tasks. We created a web application using the Django framework, Python language, OpenCv and Dlib libraries to recognize faces in the image. The purpose of our work is to create a software system for face recognition in the photo and identify wrinkles on the face. The algorithm for determining the presence and location of various types of wrinkles and determining their geometric determination on the face is programmed.

Herbert, George. How Can Middle-income Countries Improve Their Skills Systems Post- COVID-19? Institute of Development Studies (IDS), February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.082.

Full text
Abstract:
Vocational training systems in middle-income countries are going to face multiple challenges in the post-COVID era, notably, challenges related to (1) automation; (2) the transition to a green economy, and (3) demographic pressures. Of these, automation - linked to the burgeoning ‘fourth industrial revolution’ that is set to transform the global economy - represents the most serious challenge and is the only one of the three challenges discussed in any depth in this paper. Whilst estimates of the likely scale of automation in the coming years and decades vary widely, it appears likely that waves of automation will lead to a dramatic decline in many kinds of jobs that largely involve routine, repetitive tasks. These trends pre-date COVID-19, but the disruption caused by the pandemic provides an opportunity to prepare for these challenges by implementing vocational training system reforms as part of the Build Back Better agenda. Reforms to vocational training systems will be crucial to ensuring middle-income countries respond appropriately to accelerating labour market changes. However, they should only form a limited part of that response and need to be integrated with a wide range of other policy measures. Vocational training reform will need to occur in the context of major reforms to basic education in order to ensure that all workers are equipped with the cross-cutting cognitive and socio-emotional skills they will require to perform hard-to-automate tasks and to be able to learn and adapt rapidly in a changing economy. Middle-income countries will also likely need to progressively expand social protection schemes in order to provide a safety net for workers that struggle to adapt to changing labour market requirements.

Abstract:
Within the framework of an economic laboratory experiment, we investigate how Algorithm Aversion impedes the establishment of Robo Advisors. The participants have to cope with diversification tasks. They can do this themselves or they can entrust a Robo Advisor with this task. The Robo Advisor evaluates all relevant data and always makes the decision that leads to the highest expected value of compensation for the participant. Although the high performance of the Robo Advisor is obvious, the participants only trust the Robo Advisor in around 40% of all decisions. This reduces their success and their compensation. Many participants are guided by the 1/n heuristic, which contributes to their suboptimal decisions. Insofar as the participants have to decide for others, they noticeably put more effort into it and are also more successful than when they decide for themselves. However, this does not affect the acceptance of the Robo Advisor. Even in the case of proxy decisions, the Robo Advisor is only used in around 40% of cases. The propensity of economic agents towards algorithm aversion stands in the way of a broad establishment of Robo Advisors.

Bakaç, Cafer, Jetmir Zyberaj, and James C. Barela. Predicting telecommuting preferences and job outcomes amid COVID-19 pandemic : A latent profile analysis. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49214.

Full text
Abstract:
Telecommuting is defined as “a work practice that involves members of an organization substituting a portion of their typical work hours (ranging from a few hours per week to nearly full-time) to work away from a central workplace—typically principally from home —using technology to interact with others as needed to conduct work tasks”(Allen, Golden, & Shockley, 2015: 44). This kind of practice substantially differs from the regular and ordinary modes of work because employees perform their usual work in different settings, usually from home (Allen et al., 2015). Although research has been conducted on telecommuting since the 1970s, it has recently become critical when life incidents, like the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many to work from home. Such events offer rare opportunities, for a wide range of researchers and from various fields, to study important questions that would not typically be able to be asked, such as about telecommuting experiences. We took this opportunity and conducted two studies regarding telecommuting, basing our rationale on the fact that many on-site employees were forced to work from home, across a wide range of occupations as a direct result of the pandemic(Kramer & Kramer, 2020). The aim of our study, thus, was to investigate the preferences of employees who were forced to work from home. Specifically, bycreating latent profiles from important work and personality related constructs, we aimed at predicting employees’ preference for working from home or working on-site based on these profiles, and further investigate the relationship of these latent profiles to perceived productivity, job satisfaction, and job engagement.

Abstract:
Description logic knowledge bases can be used to represent knowledge about a particular domain in a formal and unambiguous manner. Their practical relevance has been shown in many research areas, especially in biology and the semantic web. However, the tasks of constructing knowledge bases itself, often performed by human experts, is difficult, time-consuming and expensive. In particular the synthesis of terminological knowledge is a challenge every expert has to face. Because human experts cannot be omitted completely from the construction of knowledge bases, it would therefore be desirable to at least get some support from machines during this process. To this end, we shall investigate in this work an approach which shall allow us to extract terminological knowledge in the form of general concept inclusions from factual data, where the data is given in the form of vertex and edge labeled graphs. As such graphs appear naturally within the scope of the Semantic Web in the form of sets of RDF triples, the presented approach opens up the possibility to extract terminological knowledge from the Linked Open Data Cloud. We shall also present first experimental results showing that our approach has the potential to be useful for practical applications.

Abstract:
In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.
