Manuscripts are among the primary primary sources that enable the researcher to study history as a way to preserve what the Arab mind has produced. The study and investigation of the manuscript discovers the researcher's contributions to civilization, which began at an early age during the Arab rule. The realization and publication of the manuscript makes it easier to translate it, know its contents, and benefit from it, as the Arab government witnessed a wide activity after the emergence of the printer, and the translation of many manuscripts. The investigation process combines two contradictions; The ease of work and its difficulty inherent in the obstacles that the researcher finds, which is summarized in the spatial dimension between the investigator and the location of the manuscript, and in the difficulty of finding and verifying other copies of manuscripts, as well as the difficulty of achieving texts in the manuscripts themselves. As for ease; It is the scientific pleasure that the investigator finds as a result of the investigation and this is due to the embrace of a group of sources in various other sciences, and the enrichment of the valuable scientific information that contains the manuscript. As for what this paper contains, what are the manuscripts and their importance, and it contains the definition of manuscripts, the parts of the manuscript, their types, and their cultural and intellectual importance. As well as the way to benefit from them, the conditions of investigation, the stages of investigation, the difficulties of investigation, the ways to treat them and the way to benefit from the manuscripts. The manuscripts also reveal the paths of scientific and intellectual exchange between nations and the images of influence and influence on the books produced by human minds. The importance of the investigation lies in preserving the nation’s heritage, highlighting the historical cultural heritage produced by historians over the years and investing it by modern technological means to spread knowledge and benefit.

Abstract:
As a note written directly by the copyist/owner of the manuscript outside the text of the manuscript, the colophon can serve as a source of information about the history of its manuscript. Not only that, colophons can also function as a source of past knowledge outside the manuscript’s tradition. This is as shown by the colophons contained in the Malay manuscripts collection of A.B. Cohen Stuart stored in the National Library of Indonesia. This research on colophon manuscripts was carried out using descriptive methods and philological work steps to analyze data sources in the form of colophons. The results of the analysis, it can be concluded that 38 Malay manuscripts from the collection of Cohen Stuart are estimated to have been collected during his duty as conservator at Bataviaasch Genootschap, Batavia (Jakarta) in 1862-1871. These manuscripts were copied and/or owned by as many as 22 copyists/owners who lived in 16 villages in Jakarta in the period 1863-1869, except for two manuscripts which are estimated to be dated to the 1840s. Most of the manuscripts were copied for commercial purposes, i.e. for rent or sale. In addition, this colophon analysis also reveals some of the history of the city of Jakarta in the 19th century, including the structure of government, the villages in Batavia, as well as the formation of the Betawi ethnicity and the livelihoods of its people.

The memoirs of A. T. Bolotov are represented by a rather extensive manuscript heritage, stored in several Russian archives. There are about 50 manuscripts, some of them are also presented in the author’s copies. In archival documents and critical literature, there still are numerous errors and inaccuracies in the description of these manuscripts and their definition as drafts, white papers, originals or copies. The aim of this article is to systematize Bolotov’s memoir legacy and establish the place of every manuscript in the overall complex of manuscripts. Therefore, the article reconstructs the history of the creation of memoirs, dividing them into stages based on the life story of Bolotov and the evolution of his attitude to his own memoirs.

The aim of this research is to determine the manuscript collection, preservation obstacles and solutions faced by the Al-Qur'an history museum in preserving ancient manuscripts. The research method used is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The research subjects were staff who worked at the North Sumatra Al-Qur'an history museum. Primary data sources include the North Sumatra Al-Qur'an history museum, conducting interviews with several Al-Qur'an History museum staff regarding the research carried out. Data collection techniques: observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis uses: Data Reduction, Data Presentation and Conclusion Drawing. Based on the research results obtained, it can be concluded that the results of the research are the collection of ancient manuscripts at the North Sumatra Al-Qur'an History Museum consisting of al-Qur'an manuscripts, fiqh manuscripts, tauhid, nahwu, tafsir, Sharaf, prayer manuscripts, manuscripts of mantiq, fawaid, mujarrobah, ushul fiqih, and manuscripts of the story of the prophet, as for the method of preserving ancient manuscripts in the North Sumatra Al-Qur'an history museum is by means of curative conservation and digitization, and the obstacles faced are the lack of conservators, funding, space adequate and conservation materials, and the solution for preserving the ancient manuscript collection at the North Sumatra Al-Qur'an History museum is to carry out routine preservation and maintenance with available materials, the museum recruits permanent conservators, carries out internal economic activities, and provides the collection in digital form.

Abstract Daluang or dluwang is an Indonesian traditional ‘near paper’ that is made of Saeh, a type of mulberry plant. Daluang or dluwang were used as a writing material in Java during the Islamic era. Cirebon, West Java Province, Indonesia, is one of daluang manuscript collection sources in Indonesia. The manuscripts belong to the local society and the royal family. The objective of this research is to provide a brief history of daluang production and use and to identify deterioration phenomena of daluang manuscripts which belong to the Cirebon society. The data was collected by literature study, interviews and a survey examining daluang manuscripts. The findings from this study are an important documentation of the present condition of daluang manuscripts in Cirebon. Furthermore, this paper offers guidance for a condition survey of daluang manuscript collections and identifies weaknesses in the current practice of preservation, offering suggestions for optimized storage conditions.

Abstract:
An effort to preserve and utilize manuscripts in this archipelago, especially religious manuscripts, is very important due to, at least, two reasons. Firstly, there has been abundant important information pertinent to religious phenomena in the manuscripts. Secondly, physical condition of the manuscripts has been increasingly fragile. Following the process of choosing the manuscript, the author has selected one of the manuscripts preserved in the State Museum of North Sumatra. This study employs the theory of philology, literature and history in analyzing the manuscript. Analyses are focused on the language used, the cultural background of the manuscript, and the social history of the region where it has been written. The findings of this study tell us that the manuscript, named Kashf al-Gharā’ib, is a classical Islamic manuscript which still has been well preserved at the State Museum of North Sumatra. It contains the scientific information of fiqh (Islamic law), especially discussing about the way of worshipping the God. The manuscript also consists of religious poems and problems of adab (ethics). Of the three topics discussed in this manuscript, I give considerable attention on worship and ethical issues.

Anders Toftgaard: Mapping a collection. What the catalogue records can tell us about Otto Thott’s manuscript collection and about manuscript cataloguing. This article deals with the manuscript collection of Count Otto Thott (1703-1785) and with manuscript cataloguing. Otto Thott was the single greatest private book collector in the history of Denmark and of inestimable importance for the Royal Danish Library, since he bequeathed his collection of manuscripts (4154 catalogue numbers) and books printed before 1531 (6059 catalogue numbers) to the Royal Library. In the manuscript collection, the inclusion of his collection marks the division between the Old Royal Collection (GKS) and the New Royal Collection (NKS). Many of the treasures in the rare books collection come from his library, and his definition of paleotypes (books printed before 1531) has (in the 20th c.) determined the definition of the collection of post-incunabula. Otto Thott did not write owners’ marks or notes in his books and he left very little archival material concerning the ways in which he created his library. Regrettably, the literary correspondence mentioned in his will has not survived. The article analyses a data set consisting of all catalogue records (in MARC format) concerning manuscripts from Otto Thott’s manuscript collection. These catalogue records in the library system derive from the catalogue made by Rasmus Nyerup (excluding oriental manuscripts) and published in 1795. When, towards the end of the 19th centrury, the alphabetical and the systematical catalogues of the collection of western manuscripts were produced, the entries in Nyerup’s catalogue were copied by hand without being revised. After the IT revolution, when the catalogue records of the systematical catalogue were transferred to a digital database of records, these records were copied once again without revision. It is shown what kind of errors from the catalogue of 1795 were still present in the on line catalogue in 2019. The quantitative analysis shows that the bulk of the manuscripts in Thott’s manuscript collection are manuscripts in Danish and German from Thott’s own century. The subject headings with most entries are Theology, History, History of Denmark, Danish Biography and Literature. As to provenances there is information concerning the manuscript’s provenance before the inclusion in Otto Thoot’s library in 17 % of the catalogue records. The analysis shows that Otto Thott’s manuscript collection was a universal collection with no specific preferences. The conclusion argues that it is necessary to get information from the various printed catalogs of the manuscript collection into the digital library system and that parts of Thott’s manuscript collection deserve revisiting and recataloguing. The Royal Danish Library’s manuscript collection might explore alternatives to the MARC-format for manuscript cataloguing. In a wider context, it is argued that Otto Thott’s library should be considered a knot in a network, and that data from the many book auction catalogues should be extracted and used for mapping the destinies of specific books and manuscripts.

The paper sheds light on the Arabic manuscripts and the Islamic manuscripts in China separately, in order to present the importance of manuscripts in the Arab-Islamic civilization, and even the entire human civilization. The paper also summarizes the history and development of Arab-Islamic manuscripts in detail, and the effects of these manuscripts on contemporary Arab-Islamic civilization. The second part of the paper focuses on the status of Islamic manuscripts in China, and offers a review of the history and development of Islamic manuscripts in China. Contrary to the common methods used in research related to Arab-Islamic civilization, the paper takes a look at the details of history, and is based on logical analysis, which shows the unique charm of Arabic-Islamic manuscripts and highlights their importance to the Arab- Islamic civilization, both in the past and at the present.

Manuscript Syair Kupu-Kupu (hereinafter referred to as SKK) is one of the manuscripts that fall into the category of symbolic poetry. This manuscript stored at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin with the Schoemann V 40 manuscript code. SKK has three version of texts. This manuscript does not have a colophon containing information about the manuscript. SKK manuscripts is included in the category of symbolic poetry because the contents of the SKK text are assumed to represent past events written using animal and plant symbols as character names. This characteristic of symbolic poetry described by GL Koster in his dissertation research. The research on the SKK manuscrips was carried out to determine the history of the emergence of symbolic poetry through the information contained in the text. The theories used in this research are codicology and textology theories. Codicological theory is used to describe the text. Textological theory is used to analyze the history of the SKK text and the reasons for the emergence of symbolic verses. The result of the research on the SKK manuscript was that the SKK manuscript was written at the request of a manuscript collector from Germany named Carl Schoemann while in the Dutch East Indies. In addition, the emergence of symbolic poetry in the Malay region is due to the concept in the Malay community to hide things that are considered taboo to be told. This is in accordance with the agreement of the first Malay king with his people in Malay History.

Abstract: The material manifestation of late medieval parchment manuscripts results from their history, which is shaped by owners, fragmentators or bookbinders. While certain characteristics, such as the dissection or palimpsesting of manuscripts, are clearly recognizable and analyzable, these objects contain further significant information about their past, which is, unfortunately, invisible to the human eye. Using three music manuscripts from the early fifteenth century, we demonstrate how processed multispectral data can provide digital images that contain new evidence about the manuscript’s past, its production, and its use and interaction with other objects. Multispectral data have until now been generated – mostly at great expense – to make obscured writing visible. Our approach relies on a secondary use of these data to elucidate a manuscript’s production and its afterlife, and some results consequently compelled us to undertake further codicological and material investigations. Our specific findings include the imprints of spectacles used by Florentine monks, the traces left by Viennese bookbinders and Nuremberg librarians, and a music scribe’s unexpected change of inks. This paper is aimed at manuscript researchers and imaging scholars, as well as librarians and conservators, who are interested in the information on materiality that can be gleaned from manuscripts by applying MSI, and that can thus enrich our understanding of these unique objects.

The “Heishuicheng Manuscripts Collected in Russia” (俄藏黑水城文獻) Volume6 contains the Chinese manuscript Ф211V Ф288V Ф266V “Dasheng ruzang lu juan shang 大乘入藏錄卷上”, and its verso side preserves a number of Western Xia written manuscripts. The purpose of this paper is to study one of the manuscripts on the verso side, namely “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” (八種粗重犯墮) which means “Eight Gross Transgressions”. Individual tantric classes have their own enumeration of precepts. Anuttara Yoga Tantra tradition abides by precepts such as the twenty-five uncontrived activities, samaya of the five Buddha families, the fourteen root downfalls, and the eight gross transgressions. Among them, the “Eight Gross Transgressions” manuscript, unique to Anuttara Yoga Tantra, is an important tantric material. Analysis of its content suggests that the manuscript “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” belongs to the precepts of the Anuttara Yoga Tantra. The paper contains the manuscript’s full transcription as well as a comparison with the parallel text of ltung ba sbom po [Gross Transgressions] in Derge Tanjur and sDom-gSum rNam-Nges [Perfect Conduct: Ascertaining the Three Vows].

Abstract:
The article describes the preparation of machine-readable linguistic resources based on medieval Slavic written monuments, as well as their use in systems for automated and automatic processing of large text data. The history of this area of applied Paleoslavistics is briefly shown on the example of several projects for the creation of electronic publications, collections and corpora of Slavic manuscripts. Particular attention is paid to the stages of development and the material of the Manuscript historical corpus (mansucripts.ru), which contains marked-up transliterations of Glagolitic and transcriptions of Cyrillic manuscripts of the 10th–15th centuries, as well as specialized tools for processing, demonstrating and analyzing non-standard graphic and spelling features and structure of texts. The labor-intensive and complex process of preparing copies of manuscripts and marking them up, unfortunately, is still the only way to convert a graphic image into a machine-readable form. It is noted that the tagged collections created on the basis of Slavic manuscripts make it possible to use the latter both for creating models for recognizing manuscripts in existing HTR systems and for developing new specialized tools for recognizing and analyzing Slavic manuscript heritage.

Abstract This article is a case study in the transition of texts from manuscript to print. It looks at all surviving manuscripts and 15th–16th-centuries printed editions of Jacob ben Asher’s ʾArbaʿah Turim, Tur Orah Hayyim. Based on a close textual investigation of Tur Orah Hayyim, chapter 428, it identifies and dates manuscript clusters, and establishes how different imprints are linked with the manuscript tradition and with each other. The article suggests that the Soncino 1490 imprint by Solomon Soncino exerted a crucial influence on the printed text of Tur Orah Hayyim. Whereas before imprints were independent and closely associated with individual manuscripts, Soncino 1490 became the archetype for all but one subsequent 15th–16th-centuries imprints, and direct dependence on manuscripts subsided.

ABSTRACT: The Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran Library has various types of historical manuscripts, covering history from ancient to modern periods. The existence of these collections is certainly very useful for writing history, especially the history of Java. Unfortunately, there are still many historical researchers in Indonesia who use colonial archival sources such as Besluit, Algemeen Verslag, Memorie van Overgave and documents such as Staatsblad, Rijksblad and Regeering Almanac instead of using existing historical manuscripts. This is due to the difficulties experienced by historical researchers in reading manuscripts which in terms of material are written by hand and use Javanese language and letters. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to catalog the manuscripts. The catalog of historical manuscripts in addition to containing the manuscript code number also contains a synopsis of the contents of the manuscript. This, in addition to making it easier for researchers to find manuscripts, also helps in understanding the contents of historical manuscripts from the Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran collection. The purpose of this service is to catalog the historical manuscripts of the Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran collection. ABSTRAK: Perpustakaan Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran mempunyai berbagai jenis manuskrip sejarah, meliputi sejarah dari periode kuno hingga modern. Keberadaan koleksi-koleksi ini tentu sangat bermanfaat bagi penulisan sejarah terutama sejarah Jawa. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini diperlukan upaya katalogisasi manuskrip. Katalogisasi manuskrip sejarah selain berisi nomor kode manuskrip juga berisi sinopsis dari isi manuskrip. Hal ini selain mempermudah peneliti dalam menemukan manuskrip juga sekaligus membantu dalam memahami isi manuskrip sejarah koleksi Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran. Tujuan dilakukannya pengabdian ini adalah untuk membuat katalog manuskrip sejarah koleksi Rekso Pustoko Mangkunegaran.

AbstractThe manuscripts of the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna contain two consecutive colophons, the second of which relates the story of how their common ancestor manuscript, which combines the Avestan text of the Yasna with its Pahlavi version, was created. It is argued that Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd produced the first Pahlavi Yasna manuscript by taking the Avestan text from one manuscript and the Pahlavi text of a manuscript by Farrbay Srōšayār. Furthermore, it is argued that Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd wrote this manuscript both for himself and for Mahayār Farroxzād, who was from the province of Bīšāpuhr. The manuscript of Rōstahm Dād-Ohrmazd was then copied by Māhwindād Narmāhān, who composed the second colophon. This article also discusses the first colophon as it appears in the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna manuscript T54, which differs from other manuscripts of this group as it includes a passage written by a scribe called Kāyūs. It is argued that T54 was produced by Kāyūs, who added this passage to its first colophon. Furthermore, variant readings of these two colophons in two manuscripts of the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna, which also include Kāyūs's passage, are discussed. Unlike T54, Kāyūs's passage forms a separate colophon in these two manuscripts. It is suggested the two colophons are corrected according to the mindset of their respective scribes.

Manuscripts is the result of handwriting which contains various things such as thoughts, community culture, history of one's life journey and customs in the past. Religious texts are related to the spread of religion in Jember, such as there are Islamic boarding school texts for the spread of Islam and there are Bible texts for the spread of Christianity in Jember.. The research was conducted using a philological research method with a codicological approach. There are several steps in this research method. First, tracing the manuscripts obtained from the people who inherited the manuscripts. Second, an inventory of manuscripts is carried out by means of field studies, namely visiting directly the location where the manuscripts are stored by the community who is the owner or inheritor of the manuscripts. Third, preservation by caring for and maintaining the manuscript to prevent the loss of the information contained in the manuscript due to damage to the manuscript due to certain factors. The results of this study explain aspects of codicology, manuscript descriptions and efforts to save the findings of eight ancient manuscripts in Jember Regency. .

The Indonesian nation conserves many ancient manuscripts. The ancient manuscripts are spread out throughout Indonesia’s archipelago, even though the total numbers of the ancient manuscripts in each area are not the same. The ancient manuscripts may be treated as documents of a nation, due to the fact that the documents may be referred to as writings containing pertinent information.. Nowadays the teaching of history by utilizing ancient manuscripts are rarely conducted by teachers. However, it is necessary to have the efforts in comprehending the ancient manuscripts that any information of the past be passed to the current and future generations. The teaching of history based on scarce resources presents certain challenges to the teacher. In this country, history has been one of the core subjects in the curriculum, since elementary school, which leads to the question whether the teaching of history has been well operated? In fact, the teaching of history in many schools is merely the transferring the teacher’s knowledge to the students in class through one-way communications. The students have become passive objects that have the duties to memorize notes given by the teacher in order to respond to the questions that will be examined. This type of history teaching method has caused the history subject uninteresting. A successful method of teaching history shall be by constructing a ‘historical memory’ along with an ‘emotional memory’. The study of ancient manuscript on history teaching is one of the many methods that can instigate “emotional memory”. After students are provided with facts of history to construct “historical memory” in class, the emotional memory can be delved due to the study of ancient history. Various alternative methods in relation to the modification of history teaching are necessary to be developed. One of the methods that can be implemented is the capitalization of ancient manuscript for the History teaching, particularly for the development of the Nation’s Culture and Character.

About 450 manuscripts containing the works of Persian rich culture, science, and history are preserved in the Arabic script collection of the Matenadaran. Many of these manuscripts contain fine works of Persian art and calligraphy. The Persian manuscripts of the Matenadaran evoke the strong historical ties between Iran and Armenia and reflect the interest of Armenians towards Persian history, science, literature, and art. Apart from these manuscripts, three handwritten works referring to the Pre-Islamic Iranian culture are kept in the Non-Armenian Manuscript Collection of the Matenadaran. These manuscripts were bequested to the Matenadaran in 1970 by Mihrdat Tiryakyan, a poet and translator of a portion of Firdawsi’s Shahnamah into Armenian. The latter gifted to the Matenadaran two Persian manuscripts as well, in 1963 and 1973. The study of these five manuscripts granted to Matenadaran by Mihrdat Tiryakyan show that they had been earlier in possession of his father Harutyun and were related to his life and works.

This article aims to scrutinise the relationship between the texts of the 16-th century chronicle, the so called Čingiz-nāmä of Ötämiš Ḥāǰǰī, preserved in two manuscripts, as well as to determine the date(s) of the compilation of the work. Materials: The Tashkent and Istanbul manuscripts of the Čingiz-nāmä of Ötämiš Ḥāǰǰī, Central Asian chronicles in Turkic and Persian, relevant scholarly literature. Results and novelty of the research: Analysing the relationship of the two texts, the author has come to the conclusion that the Tashkent and Istanbul manuscripts of the above-mentioned chronicle contain different redactions of the Čingiz-nāmä written by the same chronicler. Furthermore, the author argues that the text preserved in the Tashkent manuscript is the initial redaction compiled before the year 1539, while the text of the Istanbul manuscript contains the second redaction – an extended one – written around middle of the 1540s.

This approach uses manuscripts as research sources to be presented in a mapping which has been identified that philology, codicology, and paratext studies are the initial bases in studying aspects of the text in Minangkabau manuscripts. The aims of this study are to explore the sacred meanings in the ancient manuscripts of Kerinci preserved by the Kerinci indigenous people and their comparison with other ancient manuscripts in the world. This study uses a qualitative approach, with data collection using a purposive sampling technique on selected informants based on predetermined criteria. The results of this study indicate that the manifestation of the sacred values of the ancient manuscripts of Kerinci does not lie in the physicality of the manuscripts, but is believed by the Kerinci people to be found in the values of protecting or maintaining ancient manuscripts. The Kerinci people view the preservation of ancient manuscripts as sacred because they believe it is obedience to the results of an agreement, continuing the mandate, respecting the ikrar iyo (pledge), a form of obedience to the adjunct directions of the country's leader in this case the Depati, respecting the contents of the manuscript in the form of ancestral teachings and history, and are afraid of being exposed disaster, harm or disaster such as wasting the manuscript as harto pusako as a consequence of the responsibility that has been jointly acknowledged and bound by the iyo pledge. Some contextually sacred reasons have similarities with traditions in other places such as the value of trust, adherence to customary rules, ancestral teachings such as rituals, traditional ceremonies, certain religious teachings and ancestral history, and fear of calamity if ancient manuscripts are wasted.

Abstract: This article is a brief overview of Eastern Christian and Islamic collections in Minnesota, with a focus on the holdings of the largest such collection, located at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library (HMML) in Collegeville. Minnesota's manuscripts are largely defined by their digital presence and physical absence, as HMML has amassed the world's largest collection of digital manuscript images while the digitized manuscripts remain in libraries around the world. However, HMML holds a (relatively) small collection of physical manuscripts as well, which is the focus of this survey. The collection includes Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, along with Christian manuscripts in Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Church Slavonic, Coptic, Geʻez, Georgian, Greek, Russian, and Syriac. Highlights include twenty-one Geʻez magic scrolls, three copies of Muḥammad al-Jazūlī's Arabic prayer book Dalāʼil al-khayrāt , late antique Coptic and Greek texts on papyrus and wood, and a Georgian palimpsest fragment with two Syriac undertexts. The article describes the history of the institution and its manuscript holdings and gives an outline of the collection's contents.

Among the numerous extant manuscripts of the Lao-tzu, Tao te ching perhaps the best known, apart from the famous Ma wang tui manuscripts discovered in Hunan province in 1973 and the Hsiang erh chu manuscript from Tun Huang (important primarily for its commentary), is the long fragment known as the So Tan manuscript, currently in the private collection of Mr. John B. Elliott and through his generosity on extended loan to the University Art Museum at Princeton. The manuscript is said to have been a part of the Tun Huang finds of the turn of the century. It appears to be one of the few of those manuscripts that remained in China after its discovery rather than immediately finding its way to France, England, or some other Western country. It moved from private collector to private collector, from Peking to Hong Kong to Japan and back again, only becoming a part of the John B. Elliott collection relatively recently.

Abstract This article discusses two important representatives of the manuscript culture of the Devotio Moderna in the late medieval eastern Low Countries (c. 1500): a vernacular devout song manuscript (Berlin, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin—Preussischer Kulturbesitz mgo 185) and a Middle Dutch rapiarium or collection of various short religious texts (Zwolle, Historisch Centrum Overijssel, Collectie Emmanuelshuizen 13). Both religious multi-text codices, the material similarities between both types of manuscripts have frequently been pointed out but were never studied in detail. These particular manuscripts, however, offer fertile grounds for such a comparison, since both were in part copied by the same—probably female—scribes. Examining the nature and extent of their efforts and collaborations, this article further develops questions and arguments raised in previous scholarship on the production processes of song manuscripts and rapiaria.

Abstract Princeton University’s collection of Islamic manuscripts is by far the largest collection of its kind in the Western hemisphere and one of the most valuable collections in the world. It consists of some 13,500 manuscripts with diverse origins in public and private libraries from the Western to the Eastern Islamic lands. The collection is not only notable for its size and diversity, but also its quality, containing a large number of autograph and otherwise unique manuscripts. Despite its importance, its histories and provenances have not been the subject of an in-depth study. This paper begins to fill this lacuna. Drawing on a number of previously unstudied archival and documentary sources, including personal correspondence and paratextual manuscript notes, the article traces the development of the sub-collections, studies the collectors who built them, their methods and sources, and tells the stories of their collections’ journeys to Princeton.

This paper provides the information about the study of the Sanskrit manuscript fragments kept in the Serindia Collection of the IOM RAS. Among the Buddhist handwritten rarities discovered in the 19th—20th centuries in so-called Serindia Sanskrit manuscripts are of particular importance. Sanskrit originals of Buddhist texts preserved in Central Asian manuscripts represent what little remained of the vast Sanskrit written heritage of ancient and early medieval Buddhism. Sanskrit manuscripts are highly valuable historical sources for studying the history of spread of Buddhism throughout Central Asia and the process of reception of the Indo-Buddhist culture outside India in the first millennium AD. The article focuses on the study of Sanskrit manuscripts, which circulated in Khotan. Among the manuscripts, which constitute the Sanskrit part of the Serindia Collection, written monuments related to Khotan are represented most extensively both in terms of quantity of fragments and volume of preserved texts. A comprehensive study of this part of the Serindia Collection made it possible to classify Sanskrit manuscripts in relation to external characteristics and repertoire, to outline chronologically traceable stages of spread of Buddhism in Khotan and to work out the periodization of the history of Buddhism in this Central Asian subregion.

Abstract The manuscripts of the Liber Clementinarum of Johannes de Imola (1404). As the author of this contribution has already argued in other occasions, in this paper he would like to highlight once more the importance of manuscripts for research in the literature of late medieval canon law. Manuscript witnesses of canon law literature after 1234 have never been subject of systematic review. This offers an explanation for the fact that this period has been largely disregarded in modern research. The example, chosen for this paper, shows that in particular the makeup and the external features of the manuscripts provide insights which paradoxically may be more revealing than the text itself: The commentary on the Constitutiones Clementinae by the Bolognese doctor utriusque iuris Iohannes de Imola (ca. 1375-1436) is preserved in more than 30 manuscripts, which contain an amazing amount of information regarding dates, scribes, commissioners and owners; last but not least, these manuscripts were continued seamlessly by a series of early printed editions. Altogether, they offer a vivid picture of the making, the proliferation and the use of Iohannes's work.

Considering these manuscripts as material objects opens a new window onto medical practice among the Jewish community. This article uses two case studies—one exploring a single manuscript (Vatican Biblioteca Apostolica ebr. 362) and the various medical texts it contains and the other following the transmission of a single medical text (Bernard de Gordon’s Lilium medicinae) through a number of different manuscripts—to inquire into what can be learned from the scribal practices of the Jewish doctors who wrote, owned and used these manuscripts.

This article serves both as survey of illuminated manuscripts of the Institutiones and an analysis of the links between the iconography of criminal law and the model of Judas hanged. This investigation is based on the study of all digitalised manuscripts of the Institutiones. The corpus is composed of manuscripts ranging from the fifth to fifteenth century, produced all over Europe. The study elucidates how illuminated manuscript boomed during the thirteenth century, with Bologna at its heart. The production continued growing until the fourteenth century, to eventually die down during the fifteenth century. The world of legal manuscript’s illumination was Bologna-centric, however, some competitors, namely France and Germany, offered a visual counterpoint to understand this great iconography. When developing iconographic cycles around criminal law, two approaches existed. The approach developed in Northern Italy incorporated the representation of either a decapitation or a presentation of a prisoner. These illuminators created a specific iconography to further a distinctive visual identity within the field of legal manuscripts, whereas the rest of Europe adopted uniformly the image of a hanged man. This form of depiction takes for its model the motif of Judas hanged, heavily linking criminality to religion.

Abstract Persian narrative sources provide a colorful picture of Mughal courtly life, but in order to zoom in on cultural practices one has to turn to the artefacts of cultural pursuits. This article studies one specimen of the empirical treasure trove of Arabic manuscripts in South Asia in order to approach a lacuna in Mughal scholarship: the role of Arabic at the Mughal court. In the following, I will analyze the different paratextual layers of a manuscript of the thirteenth century Arabic grammar commentary Sharḥ al-Radī by Radī al-Dīn al-Astarābādhī to study its reading and transmission. The manuscript version represents a written artefact, which emerged out of a series of intellectual engagements. On the one hand, these textual engagements offer a perspective on the manuscript’s initial owner, Saʿd Allāh Khān (d. 1656), and his intellectual pursuits, as well as the scholarly framework in which he was brought up and worked in. On the other hand, the history of this manuscript’s circulation highlights the treatment of Arabic written artefacts at Shāh Jahān’s court. In an exemplary manner, the manuscript’s history of circulation demonstrates how courtly elites engaged with Arabic during the seventeenth century.

Summary: A new discovery of a late manuscript of Ibn Ḥawqal in the library of the ʿAllāl al-Fāsī Foundation, in Rabat, sheds light on the manuscript culture of the late 19th century in Morocco, on the dualism of manuscripts and prints of the same text at the same time. Indeed until now, Ibn Ḥawqal’s geographical treatise is known through eight medieval manuscripts that seem to give four versions of the text, although their relations are not clear. However, an unpublished manuscript is kept in Rabat, but it is a recent copy (early 20th century) of Michael De Goeje’s edition of 1873. Surprisingly this copy bears several charateristics of manuscript writing although the copist had a printed text as model.

Early in 2002, three nineteenth-century Scottish flute manuscripts came to light in the Whittaker Library at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD). The manuscripts are inscribed with the name of James Simpson of Dundee. The two slimmer volumes are dated 1828 and 1830. The third undated manuscript is a more handsomely bound volume and, judging by the content and handwriting, was likely to have been started at around the same time. Each manuscript consists almost entirely of flute duets and trios, and untexted psalm tunes for three and four voices. The history of the manuscripts is unknown, but it can be deduced that they were acquired by the RSAMD sometime after 1958. The manuscripts offer a colourful ‘snapshot’ of music-making in Dundee in the nineteenth century, with their cross-section of Scottish tunes and more widely-used drawing-room music, not to mention their church connections.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the development of a digital archive for the Min Family Correspondence Collection of the University of Toronto Libraries, the first Korean historical manuscript collection in Canada. This strategic digitization project between the University of Toronto Libraries and the National Library of Korea accomplished the following: content analysis and annotation of manuscripts, metadata creation, and enhanced access to the resources. The results from this paper show that one of the crucial factors in successful digitization projects is building bridges between the two organizations as a partnership. Our main aim in this paper was to build a deeper understanding of how to develop a digital archive for Asian historical manuscripts and to explore how to improve the accessibility of rare historical records.

The study based on the materials of the catalog of A. B. Khalidov: the writings were identiϐied, re-examined, and described in more detailed way. In the collection of the Institute the writings authored by Sa‘id Arakani (al-Harakani) (1763–1834), Idris-afandi from Andirei (d. 1874), Hasan al-Alqadari (1834–1910) and many others were found.

This work presents two new manuscripts of this chronicle, tracing its history and establishing its place in the manuscript tradition. The text of the Crónica de 1344 copied in these two manuscripts, although fragmentary, is of great importance, since it covers the final part of the chronicle, precisely the least well known. The analysis of its text and the comparison with the other manuscripts of the chronicle and its sources reveals that these new testimonies contain a copy of the original version, of which, until now, no copies were known.

Indonesia is recognized as a country with the greatest wealth of ancient manuscript heritage in the world. The diversity of cultures and customs stretching from Sabang to Merauke makes Indonesia has hundreds or even thousands of ancient manuscripts. Today, ancient manuscripts are considered the nation's cultural heritage with high historical value and their existence is stored as carefully as possible in libraries and museums. Even so, writing that is tens or even hundreds of years old makes ancient manuscripts vulnerable to damage. This cannot be ignored because ancient manuscripts have a source of information and real evidence of the past civilization of the nation's ancestors. Therefore, it is necessary to take concrete action to preserve ancient manuscripts, one of which is by media transfer or digitalization methods. This qualitative research focuses on ancient manuscripts stored in the Yayasan Pangeran Sumedang library. Including 4 informants who have background knowledge regarding the preservation of ancient manuscripts. The results of this research show that the Yayasan Pangeran Sumedang library is digitizing as an ancient manuscript preservation activity. In its implementation, the library applies standard operational steps in media transfer activities, namely (1) Pre-digitization, (2) Digitization, and (3) Post-digitization. This research shows that the final product of the digital media transfer activities carried out at the Yayasan Pangeran Sumedang library is an e-book. This digital version of ancient manuscripts is intended for all levels of society, with the hope that ordinary people can access the knowledge contained in ancient manuscripts. Not only that, the repackaging of this ancient manuscript also targets the younger generation to become increasingly interested in reading the history of the nation's ancestors

M. Apraksin, translated into the modern Kalmyk language and translated into Russian. The Saṅghāṭasūtra (Sgh) is one of the most extensively preserved Old Khotanese texts, together with the Book of Zambasta (Z) and the Suvarṇabhāsasūtra (Suv).1 Unlike Z which is known chiefly from one manuscript and only a few fragmentary variants from other manuscripts, the Sgh is represented by a large number of fragments belonging to several manuscripts. We now have Giotto Canevascini to thank for the publication of virtually all the extant manuscript material belonging to the Khotanese Sgh, originally the author's doctoral dissertation prepared under the supervision of R. E. Emmerick and submitted in 1992 at the University of Hamburg.2 It constitutes a major contribution to Khotanese research and to Iranian and Buddhist studies as well: it is of note, for instance, that Canevascini could demonstrate that the oldest manuscript of Sgh already contains textual corruptions revealing that it is actually a copy from a still older manuscript (p. xv), and that his chronological arrangement of the manuscripts provides definitive evidence that the spellings g, ś and ṣ precede, in Old Khotanese, the spellings gg, śś and ṣṣ (pp. xv–xvi) as suggested by E. Leumann, Buddhistische Literatur, nordarisch und deutsch, I. Teil, Nebenstücke (Leipzig, 1920), 92 (cf. Ṡgs., xix).
