Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on fragments of Notre Dame manuscripts that made their way to German speaking Europe during the medieval period. The first chapter focuses on their contexts of reuse. Dominican, Cistercian as well as Franciscan bookbinders played a role in these processes of medieval and early modern recycling. The potential for fragments to elucidate bookbinders’ techniques will be explored, and existing hypotheses as to the circulation of Notre Dame manuscripts will be critically reviewed. Furthermore, an emphasis is placed on the importance of the reconstruction of medieval book collections. The second chapter is dedicated to the discovery of a set of conductus fragments reused by a bookbinder of the Dominican convent of Soest. Taking one known fragment as a point of departure, I was able to assign five further leaves(now in Münster, Cambridge and New Haven) to this set of fragments. The third chapter sheds new light on the history of two host volumes, in which, during the twentieth century, organum fragments were discovered. It addresses questions of the changing ownership of manuscripts, focusing on the role of post Reformation and nineteenth century book collectors. The final chapter, a case study of the conductus Porta salutis ave, discusses editorial problems in conjunction with a close analysis of the piece’s main stylistic features. As the text was originally designed as a seal inscription, questions of material culture and music are also addressed. Furthermore, my systematic search for text sources for the distich Porta salutis ave revealed more than twenty previously unconsidered manuscripts transmitting the poetic text only, whose fuller, contents point to complementary contexts and functions to those suggested in the musical sources and the seals.

Abstract:
This study investigates the role of regional networks for economic development (RENEDs) in regions suffering from industrial dislocation. It proposes that RENEDs significantly affect regional development. It also investigates the aspects of RENEDs that promote interorganisational collaboration on projects, and examines how RENEDs foster and manage them. The research uses a case study approach, and presents two regions suffering from the decline of their main economic source. These regions are the Hunter region of New South Wales (Australia) and the Le??n province of Castilla Y Le??n (Spain). A pilot study and a survey were conducted in both regions. Three types of analysis were applied: network, statistical and qualitative. The research method makes it possible to replicate research and develop a theory of regional networks for economic development. The results show that success of RENEDs is determined by capital investment generated by the projects, their influence in changing the economic bases of the regions, and the improvement to regional network capital. This study found that frequency of communication is a structural element that significantly affects the production of projects. However, other variables affect projects, such as external pressures from globalisation, government policies and ideologies, and internal constraints from the public, private and civic sectors. This thesis concludes that RENEDs have an important role in regional planning through the formulation of specific projects that target economic disparity. RENEDs represent a system of relationship that enrich the network capital of the regions as an important asset for their future.

Abstract:
The region of interest in this study is the ocean area to the north of the Western Australian coast; that is, the Timor Sea. It is the tropical cyclones (TC) that generate in this area that most often affect the people and industries located in this region of Western Australia. Accordingly, it is the case that there is a continuing need to improve our understanding of these systems using both observations and numerical models. After an introduction to the problems caused by TCs in the north of Western Australia, a description is made of the study area. A review of the various meteorological systems that can be identified in the tropics is provided. This is followed by a history of research on cyclogenesis. A detailed discussion is undertaken on the current state of knowledge of tropical cyclogenesis. This theoretical understanding subsequently is applied to three case studies. Following a description of the data used and the analysis techniques, the three case studies are presented. In each case study, a system, which later becomes a tropical cyclone, is analysed during the genesis period. The three case studies examined in this thesis are, case 1 (TC Tim, 1994), case 2 (TC Elaine, 1999) and case 3 (TC Isobel, 1996). In each case, the system was studied for at least 10 days prior to it being named. This approach was adopted to ensure that any potential development was not overlooked. A system is named when it reaches sufficient intensity for gale force winds to exist in all quadrants around the centre of that system. For each case, the environment in the vicinity of the location where the system was initially identified was studied until an evolving system was identified. Monitoring of the system continued until it was named.Observations from the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program comprised the physical data set. In parallel with this data collection activity, meteorological products from a numerical model were catalogued over the same time interval. The thesis presents comparisons of the satellite products and the model output over the study period. In part, motivated by the outcomes of this comparison, it was determined to investigate further prospects for using the array of satellite-derived products that might be more appropriate for use as a forecasting support tool. Finally, as an example, a prototype index is proposed which has potential to demonstrate the degree of development of a system. In this work, for want of a name, this index is termed the Hamilton Index (HI). It uses meteorological products derived from the microwave DMSP series of satellites and provides a temporal sequence of values of the index that are applied to monitor the developing of the TC systems in the three case studies. The meteorological variables used in the index were selected because they were accepted indicators of tropical cyclogenesis identified in the research literature. When applied to the three case studies, the HI showed a significant improvement in sensitivity to the state of development of the systems, especially when compared to the computer model data examined for the case studies.

Abstract:
Higher education has undergone significant change as universities have sought to respond to government reforms in a period of globalisation. One major reform that globalisation has introduced is the reduction in state funding for higher education. Universities have turned to other resources to provide funding and one of these is the recruitment of international students. The focus of this thesis is on contrasting the internationalisation policies of two nations, Australia and the United States, by analysing published policies, statistics and carrying out interviews on two campuses. Two universities, one in Australia and the other in the United States, served as case studies to examine the strategies used to implement these policies. Approximately 100 participants were interviewed, including administrators and faculty members, international and domestic students. Each university featured internationalisation as a goal in its mission statement. By integrating intercultural and global dimensions into the teaching, research and service functions of a university, internationalisation encompasses a multitude of activities that provide an educational experience. While administrators generally stated that the implementation of strategic plans to achieve international goals had been successful, many faculty members, domestic and international students were of the view that international goals were yet to be realised. These contrasting discourses revealed that each university was falling short of achieving its internationalisation goals. Faculty members and domestic and international students expressed dissatisfaction about cultural insensitivity, lack of adequate services that offered housing and emotional/social support, and language barriers. At the same time, each university was achieving some of its internationalisation goals. In conclusion, strategies are suggested that might improve the implementation of internationalisation at both universities.

The study analyses the Western Australian mining regulatory framework of environmental compliance. Through the case studies of Yeelirrie uranium mining approval, and Collie coal mining, it identifies a dichotomy (Acts of Parliament and State Agreements) of mining legislation and multi-agency approach challenging effective environmental protection. Grounded in sustainability and social sciences approaches, the thesis draws from expert interviews to identify weaknesses and best practices. It makes recommendations for strengthening the implementation of the mining regulatory framework.

Abstract:
This thesis reports the outcomes of research into the use of restraint in the care of patients in an acute teaching hospital in Australia. The literature review undertaken for the study revealed much research into restraints showing evidence of the harm they cause, and their ineffectiveness as a safety measure. The literature indicates that the prevalence of restraint use is high - about a third of all hospital patients over the age of eighty-five years may be restrained at some time during the period of their admission.The main emphasis in my investigation was to uncover an understanding of how the use of restraints has remained possible, despite negative reports on their efficacy and questions about their possible abuse of human rights. Primarily, 1 set out to provide vide an understanding of restraint practice, and of how it is maintained and legitimised in a metropolitan teaching hospital.The study was guided by a Foucauldian approach to discourse analysis. The study reports on in depth studies of three patients. The case studies extend beyond observations of the patients to include interviews with members of the multidisciplinary team: nurses, doctors, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Medical and nursing notes were another source of data.A discursive formation was identified by which restraint use is justified, and legitimised by the health professionals who use it. Five discourses were established, constituting: inability to 'self govern'; an appropriate environment; treatment; duty of care; and marginalisation.The study concludes that restraint use can be understood as a complex discursive practice. Through this discursive practice we can understand how staff maintain a monopoly over the truth and perpetuate claims about the inevitability of restraint use. Knowledge of these discursive practices enables an understanding of how the current educational approaches to restraint reduction are likely to have little immediate or sustained impact. With these understandings, we are hopefully better placed to change practice in a way that does not substitute one undesirable approach for another. If this is so, the value of this thesis will lie in its influence on practice as much as in its contribution to scholarship.

Asset securitization is one of the most important financial innovations recently. With an impressive growth in terms of volume of issuance, from almost zero to five trillion USD, in a period of 15-20 years, it is one of the most rapidly growing markets in the financial world. Yet, little is known about this, literally invisible market. Companies engage in asset securitization for a variety of reasons and numerous advantages and disadvantages of asset securitization can be found throughout the literature. Asset securitization has an impact on a number of stakeholder groups: shareholders, managers, employees, investors, the financial markets and ultimately the overall economy and society. Asset securitization is one of the reasons for the financial crisis that started in mid 2007. Since the recent financial turmoil, it became clear the asset securitization was the primary funding source for companies in the financial industry and it was the primary supplier of credit in developed economies. Because of its importance and impact, it is very important that we study the reasons, the motivations, the consequences and the effects from this so powerful financial innovation. And it is important to study it from as many different aspects as possible. Many questions surrounding asset securitization are unanswered and it is important to answer them sooner. This study investigates the wealth effects from asset securitization on the shareholders of the securitizing companies. We study whether the announcement about a pending securitization transaction has any impact on the stock price of the securitizing company. That way we can discover whether asset securitization creates wealth, destroys wealth or has no impact on wealth at all. Not many studies have been done on this topic so far. The existing seven studies are focused mainly on the US and the EU market and report contradicting results. In this study, for the first time, data from Australia is being used. The Australian securitization market is the second, single most active securitization market in the world, after the US market. We conduct quantitative analysis on a sample of 98 securitization transactions during the period 2000-2006. With this sample, we cover almost 29% of the number of securitization transactions during that period and almost 39% in terms of volume of issuance. To analyze the data we use standard event study methodology, common for this type of studies.    Our analysis reveals that investors in Australia do not perceive asset securitization favorably. Securitizing companies’ stock price decreases in the 10 days around the securitization announcement day, resulting in statistically significant wealth losses for the originating companies’ shareholders. Furthermore, the wealth losses are significant for less frequent securitizers, for securitizers that engage in small volume securitization transactions and for securitizing companies with low asset quality.    With this study we make theoretical and practical contribution. We lend empirical support to the previous theories and we help managers, shareholders and investors shape their forecasts.

Abstract:
This study investigated the use of competencies for human resource management in seven Australian companies. Despite advocacy for the use of competencies by Government Committees and Task Forces (For example Carmichael (1992), Mayer, (1992) and Karpin, 1995), and the existence of competency standards for eighty per cent of the Australian workforce, the competency approach has not been widely adopted. A review of the literature indicated that the term competency had several meanings with different implications for its use depending on the meaning. The study looked at how individuals have defined the term and applied the approach to human resource management practices. Interviews were conducted with Human Resource and Training managers, and operative staff in companies using competencies. How they defined the term, described the rationale for using competencies, and applied competencies to selection, training, performance appraisal and remuneration were determined. Case studies were written for each company to describe their particular application of competencies. Competencies were found to be defined in several ways by those interviewed. Some advantages of using competencies in human resource management applications were found. The amount of work involved in introducing the competency approach was described as a reason why competencies have not been more widely adopted.

Study of the research literature showed that literacy skills are socialised in young children along with their learning of oral language. This socialisation process occurs within a child's home environment long before they enter formal schooling. Family literacy has been shown to have the potential to impact powerfully on children's perceptions about literacy use through role models and support provided by various family and community members. Literacy activity is often deeply embedded in daily family practices. For some children, differences between home and school literacy practices can occur. Where this mismatch occurs for children in low socio economic homes the problems associated can be compounded. In the present study a formative experimental design was used to investigate and describe some of the literacy practices of eight families living in a low socio-economic environment as identified by the parents of children attending a preprimary centre. Some family literacy programs designed to reduce the effect of the literacy mismatch between home and school have been found, in research literature, to be unsuitable for certain communities because of their inability to address the needs of individual families. The present study reports on the results of a family literacy program jointly planned by the teacher/researcher and parents of eight families from a low socio-economic community. It describes the nature of the family literacy program and the perceptions of the program held by the eight participants. Issues arising from this family literacy program design are highlighted and some implications for educational practice and further research are presented.

Abstract:
Michael Fullan (1991) commented that little was known about how students viewed educational change, as no one had thought to ask them. By 2004 there was a small but growing literature seeking the views of students on a range of issues associated with schooling. This thesis presents the findings and analysis of a study of students’ perceptions of educational change. Much educational change involves shifts in power and responsibilities between the different actors, such as governments, school administrators, teachers, parents, the community and students. Despite widespread interest in educational change it is usually the macro-level policy elite who exert the most influence, using their power, privilege and status in order to propagate particular versions of schooling; students continue to be the ‘objects’ of policy initiatives, submerged in what Freire referred to as a ‘culture of silence’. Students are frequently excluded as participants in both the process and decision making phases of change. This research was based on exploring the exclusion of students from the processes of change in schools, resulting from a top-down policy initiative by the State department of education in WA, the Local Area Education Planning (LAEP) Framework. How policy is defined and acted on is explored, and the roles students could have, but often do not, are highlighted. An eclectic hybrid conceptual framework drawing on both critical theory and a postmodern policy cycle approach was used to analyse the LAEP Framework policy processes and students’ perceptions of the changes that ensued. The research comprised in-depth case studies of three schools undergoing substantial educational restructuring as the result of the macro-level LAEP Framework policy in the State of WA. Key elements of the policy were school amalgamations, closures and the creation of Middle Schools. Data collection methods included focus group and semi-structured interviews with students from the three schools, as well as document analysis, staff interviews and field notes. The research found that students were very perceptive about educational change, that they were deeply impacted by educational change and that they wanted to participate in restructuring agendas. Several meta-level themes emerged from the students’ ‘voices’, including issues associated with disempowerment, and competing social justice and economic discourses. The findings foreground the often messy and contradictory tensions evident in policy processes. The thesis concluded by developing theory on ways in which students could be included meaningfully as participants in educational change

Abstract:
Despite the substantial amount of work undertaken on internationalization to-date, most has placed little emphasis on the temporal processes and dynamics of internationalization in shaping firm internationalization histories. This is reflected in several problem areas in theories and research regarding internationalization including accelerated internationalization, full and partial de-internationalization and use of multiple modes of entry at a point in time. This study addressed an important question: what factors and processes affect the way a firm???s pattern of internationalization changes over time? Although mainstream theories of internationalization and recent advances that link internationalization and entrepreneurship assume the importance of ???opportunity???, there is a paucity of research that that places ???opportunity??? as the core process in internationalization. By embracing time as a key dimension, this study reconceptualized internationalization as an entrepreneurial process: as the process of opportunity discovery, evaluation and exploitation in international markets. The research was undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 included a literature review covering the internationalization and entrepreneurship research streams. The discovery-evaluation-exploitation framework from entrepreneurship was used to identify relevant factors and explore eight case studies. By drawing on results from the exploratory research, an initial conceptual model and a set of propositions were developed. In Phase 2, fifteen case studies were theoretically sampled from a pool of small and medium enterprises from the knowledge and non-knowledge based industries in Australia. The data collection and analysis followed a process, event-driven approach to case study research involving the mapping of key sequences of events as well as within and cross case analysis. The results clarified the nature and pattern of opportunity discovery, evaluation and exploitation, and a number of factors that influence this process: the role of prior knowledge, network ties, serendipity, absorptive capacity, bricolage, the nature of uncertainty, feedback mechanisms and effectual versus causal reasoning. The findings also suggest the evolutionary process of firm development and internationalization and show that born globals may be a classification error. The results indicate that full and partial de-internationalization as well as the use of multiple modes of entry are influenced by the interconnectedness of opportunities across the founding, domestic and international context over time; the role of Knightian uncertainty which can push or pull the patterns in many directions and how firms rely on effectual reasoning. The results provide a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of internationalization. The academic contributions of this thesis include the extension of Jones and Coviello???s (2005) model and previous models by developing a dynamic, process model of internationalization that is capable of addressing the temporal and dynamic gaps in internationalization; the integration and reconciliation of extant theories of internationalization by understanding the role of mode of reasoning; and the establishment of ???opportunity-firm??? nexus as a suitable unit of analysis in internationalization and international entrepreneurship research. Finally, the managerial contributions include guidance for firms and entrepreneurs in terms of dealing with uncertainty and complexity in international markets using the appropriate mode of reasoning (i.e. effectual, non-predictive approach vs. causal, predictive approach) in the right context and circumstances.

This thesis investigates performing arts administration and management in the current economic and social environment in Vietnam and Australia within a context of globalisation. A comparative study of two major arts organisations in both Vietnam and Australia was carried out to investigate the following: why and how performing arts organisations are adapting to the changing environment; how arts leaders are adapting to changes; and whether arts managers need specific arts management training. The suitability of pertinent training packages and tertiary arts management courses from an Australian perspective are examined to determine whether these could be adapted for arts administration training in Vietnam. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using judgemental sampling. Two case studies were in Vietnam (the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Hanoi Youth Theatre), and two in Australia (the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Theatre Company). Some arts administrators involved with managing these performing arts organisations were interviewed in-depth, and relevant documents, regulations and policies in the arts field were also analysed to lay a foundation for comprehending the operation and management of performing arts organisations in both countries, at a time of change. Findings indicate that globalisation and particularly economic changes are major pressures that are pushing arts organisations to adapt. Furthermore, in the context of the knowledge economy, credentials have become increasingly important for arts leaders to obtain their positions, while in order to be successful in their positions, practical experience, innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset proved to be even more essential. It is suggested that some pertinent arts management training courses in Australia could, if adapted, contribute to enhancing arts management and the entertainment industry in Vietnam, as well as providing mutual benefit to both Vietnam and Australia.

This thesis reports the outcomes of research into the use of restraint in the care of patients in an acute teaching hospital in Australia. The literature review undertaken for the study revealed much research into restraints showing evidence of the harm they cause, and their ineffectiveness as a safety measure. The literature indicates that the prevalence of restraint use is high - about a third of all hospital patients over the age of eighty-five years may be restrained at some time during the period of their admission.The main emphasis in my investigation was to uncover an understanding of how the use of restraints has remained possible, despite negative reports on their efficacy and questions about their possible abuse of human rights. Primarily, 1 set out to provide vide an understanding of restraint practice, and of how it is maintained and legitimised in a metropolitan teaching hospital.The study was guided by a Foucauldian approach to discourse analysis. The study reports on in depth studies of three patients. The case studies extend beyond observations of the patients to include interviews with members of the multidisciplinary team: nurses, doctors, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Medical and nursing notes were another source of data.A discursive formation was identified by which restraint use is justified, and legitimised by the health professionals who use it. Five discourses were established, constituting: inability to 'self govern'; an appropriate environment; treatment; duty of care; and marginalisation.The study concludes that restraint use can be understood as a complex discursive practice. Through this discursive practice we can understand how staff maintain a monopoly over the truth and perpetuate claims about the inevitability of restraint use. Knowledge of these discursive practices enables an understanding of how the current ++
educational approaches to restraint reduction are likely to have little immediate or sustained impact. With these understandings, we are hopefully better placed to change practice in a way that does not substitute one undesirable approach for another. If this is so, the value of this thesis will lie in its influence on practice as much as in its contribution to scholarship.

This study investigates the links between devolution and Year 8-10 Society and Environment (SAE) curriculum policy in Western Australia (WA) since 1987. It explores whether changes to the structure within which SAE resides, the process through which curriculum decision making occurs, and the content of SAE are consistent with the principles and practice of devolution. An attempt is made in the study to determine whether these changes would have occurred anyway, even if devolution had not been introduced. The investigation is based on a radical humanist model of social inquiry, As such, it uses a critical theory conceptual framework to inform a qualitative research paradigm. Two sources provide qualitative data for the study, namely, interviews and documentary material. The interview material comes from discussions with twenty six senior education officers, school staff, academics and other stakeholders. The documentary material includes key system-wide policy documents, Year 8-10 curriculum frameworks, guidelines and syllabi, and relevant school level publications. Generally, the analysis of data gained from those two sources support the claims made by critical theorists about the impact of devolution upon curriculum policy. More specifically, the findings show that in WA, since 1987, state curriculum development has contributed to a reinforcement of social control, a widening of social inequality and an intensification of the school's role as an agent of narrowly defined economic interests. These links are shown to be consistent with the critical theory argument that devolution is underpinned by corporate managerialism and that it involves not only a decentralisation of responsibility but also a recentralization of power. The study concludes by suggesting that the implications of WA's experience of devolution for China depend largely on whether China's context and needs are examined in terms of a consensus model or a critical theory model of society.

This study involves an exploration of the perceptions of four overseas Kenyan students about their educational experiences at La Trobe University. A related aim of this research is to find out how these four students� previous learning in Kenya affects their learning and living experiences in Australia, for instance, in terms of demands associated with differences in learning and teaching styles, cultural expectations and proficiencies in English. A non-positivist, qualitative methodology is adopted for this research which employs an interview-based case study approach. Qualitative research demands that the world be approached with the assumption that nothing is trivial and that everything has the potential of being a clue which might unlock more comprehensive understanding of what is being researched. While the findings of this study confirm current understandings of the issues that international students commonly face, they also provide a more complex and individualized picture of the needs and aspirations of overseas Kenyan students. As the case studies demonstrate, the academic and related challenges four Kenyan students have encountered at La Trobe University are best understood in relation to several contexts. The difficulties these international students have experienced in the context of transition or border crossing � between two countries, cultures and educational systems � were exacerbated by inadequate pre-departure preparation and orientation on arrival. Incongruities between two educational systems � in particular between their prior teacher-centred schooling in Kenya and the unfamiliar student-centred university education in Australia � colour the academic and related challenges such students struggle to address, at least in their initial year at University. The broader, global context of the commodification and marketization of higher education � along with increasing strains of an under-resourced university sector in Australia � also impinge upon the lives of these four La Trobe students, in a variety of ways.

The reasons why non-English speaking background (NESB) shopfloor employees participate in workplace language and literacy classes and the factors that affect their motivation to participate are relative unknowns. This study investigates NESB shopfloor employees' motivation to participate in a Communication Skills Development Program (CSDP) course and the factors that affected their motivation. An inductive analysis of findings revealed that all of the employees participated in one of the CSDP courses for a variety of pre-determined life-specific reasons. These reasons are represented by three main categories of goals (i.e., 'Self-improvement through language and literacy development', 'Work', 'Outside work'). Of these goals, all of the employees reported 'Self-improvement through language and literacy development' as the underlying reason why they participated in one of the CSDP courses. Further, each employee reported a language/literacy practice that is peculiar to all of his/her goals and most sub-goals. An extended analysis of the employees' motivation to participate identified the employees as being 'transactional-', 'vocational-', 'fellowship-', 'social camaraderie-' and/or 'self-satisfaction- oriented' learners. Findings also revealed that a variety of 'personal', 'course-related' and 'context-related' factors either positively or adversely affected the employees' motivation to participate. A qualitative case study design was implemented. Data was collected through interviews, observations, field notes and the review of artifacts. Data was inductively analysed by classifying patterns of relationships into categories that represent the employees' motivation to participate and factors that affected their motivation. ii This study's findings have implications for theory and practice. At a theoretical level, these findings add to the existing theoretical understanding of why English as second language adults participate in workplace language and literacy classes and the factors that affect their motivation. At a practice level, these findings illustrate the need for Food Products management and program teachers to have an understanding of the reasons 'why' NESB shopfloor employees participate in workplace language and literacy classes and the factors that affect their motivation. For with such an understanding, first, Food Products management will be able to implement organisational practices that positively affect the employees' motivation to participate in future CSDP classes. Second, teachers will be able to assist the employees to set realistic goals, and design and implement course content that assists the employees to attain these goals.. For it is when employees attain their goals that they will form and hold positive perceptions of the course in which they participate.

Despite increasing publicity, habitat loss and fragmentation remain a serious threat to biodiversity. The main objectives of this research were (i) to study the effects of forest fragmentation on the distribution and abundance of resident birds in the fragmented littoral forests of southeastern Madagascar and temperate woodlands of southeastern Australia at three spatial scales (patch, landscape and regional) and (ii) to place the results of these case studies within the realms of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography and its descendent theories, to ascertain whether it is appropriate to use these theories to derive conservation scenarios within these threatened regions. Deforestation of Madagascar's remaining forests is considered a global concern due to both its current high intensity and the small amount of forest claimed to be remaining on the island. Surprisingly, very few studies have considered the impacts of forest fragmentation on bird diversity in Madagascar. A multi-scale study on the effects of littoral forest fragmentation and degradation on birds is therefore a major step forward for bird conservation on the island. Furthermore, prior to this study no known work has been conducted on the avifauna within the threatened littoral forests of eastern Madagascar. My results indicated that (i) the littoral forests contained bird species assemblages that were unique when compared to neighbouring forest habitats, (ii) many forest-dependent bird species were significantly affected by habitat structure and especially proximity to forest edge and (iii) many forest-dependent species were affected by landscape factors such as remnant shape and remnant size. No relationship was found between measures of landscape composition, remnant 'isolation' and bird distribution within littoral forest remnants.

Whilst technology use has always been a part of the practice of health care delivery, more recently, information technology has been applied to aspects of clinical work concerned with documentation. This thesis presents an analysis of the ways that two professional groups, one clinical and one ancillary, at a single hospital cooperatively engage in a work practice that has recently been computerised. It investigates the way that a clinical group???s approach to and actual use of the system creates problems for the ancillary group. It understands these problems to arise from the contrasting ways that the groups position their use of documentation technology in their local definitions of professional status. The data on which analysis of these practices is based includes 16 hours of video recordings of the work practices of the two groups as they engage with the technology in their local work settings as well as video recordings of a reflexive viewing session conducted with participants from the ancillary group. Also included in the analysis are observational field notes, interviews and documentary analysis. The analysis aimed to produce a set of themes grounded in the specifics of the data, and drew on TLSTranscription?? software for the management and classification of video data. This thesis seeks to contribute to three research fields: health informatics, sociology of professions and social science research methodology. In terms of health informatics, this thesis argues for the necessity for health care information technology design to understand and incorporate the work practices of all professional groups who will be involved in using the technology system or whose work will be affected by its introduction. In terms of the sociology of professions, this thesis finds doctors and scientists to belong to two distinct occupational communities that each utilise documentation technology to different extents in their displays of professional competence. Thirdly, in terms of social science research methodology, this thesis speculates about the possibility for viewing the engagement of the groups with the research process as indicative of their reactions to future sources of outside perturbance to their work.

The aim of paleoenvironmental studies is to reconstruct characteristics of the past environment from fossil assemblages preserved in sedimentary strata. Thus, studies of modern surface assemblages, quantitatively correlated to the environmental parameters, are required before reliable interpretations can be made. For this dissertation, two different techniques were applied in two case studies: a reconstruction making use of a benthic foraminiferal transfer function from the intertidal marshes in the eastern Mississippi Sound, Alabama/Mississippi, and a qualitative reconstruction of ocean current activity on the Western Australian shelf. Modern salt-marsh foraminifera were collected from Grand Bay, Pascagoula, Fowl River, and Dauphin Island across several elevation transects and different salinity regimes. Cluster analysis yielded nine dead biofacies and five live assemblages from Open Estuarine to Upland Transition. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated a strong relationship between distributions of dead biofacies and elevation. Both dissolution of calcareous species in the organic marsh sediment and the long-term accumulative nature of the dead assemblage favored the use of non-estuarine dead assemblages. A Weighted Average-Partial Least Squared transfer function was applied to the surface data and yielded a Root Mean Squared Error of Prediction (RMSEP) of 0.14 m, which represents 33% Mean Range of Tide at Grand Bay and 39% at Dauphin Island. The transfer function was applied to two sedimentary cores from Grand Bay and two from Dauphin Island, which revealed disparate developments between the regions during the last 1,900 years. While both Dauphin Island cores indicated relative sea-level trends aligned with other Gulf of Mexico studies, Grand Bay was likely impacted by a river avulsion event disconnecting Grand Bay from fluvial sediment influx, and by the erosion of a protective headland, Grand Batture Island. Sediments spanning the last ~100 years contained increased abundances of low marsh foraminifera likely associated with coastline erosion, which was most prominently displayed by a lithology shift towards grey silt in the Dauphin Island cores. Surface carbonate sediments from Western Australia’s Northwestern Shelf and Carnarvon Ramp were collected from 127–264 m water depth. Foraminiferal assemblages changed between 127 m and 145–264 m due to rapidly decreasing water temperature in the thermocline, and loss of sufficient light for support of “larger” benthic foraminifera. Latitudinal differences were likely caused by three factors: (1) limited influence of the warm Leeuwin Current to support tropical taxa at the sampled depths, (2) reduced habitat diversity on the narrow Carnarvon Ramp compared to surrounding shelves, and (3) differing water-mass characteristics. The gathered information was used to interpret the assemblages from a Carnarvon Ramp core (total depth 300 m), providing insight into the activity of the warm, surficial Leeuwin Current for the last 3.54 My (Pliocene). Abundant infaunal taxa were inferred to indicate low oxygenation, increased supply of organic matter, and high sea-surface productivity during the absence of the Leeuwin Current above the coring site. Dominance of epifaunal species signified higher oxygenation at the sediment-water interface when upwelling of nutrient-rich waters was effectively suppressed by the Leeuwin Current. Around 1.14 Ma, waning of hypoxic conditions was initiated until a more substantial change was marked at 0.91 Ma. Suspension-feeding sponges became common sediment constituents during a Leeuwin Current flow optimum at ~0.6 Ma. The epifaunal taxa dominance persisted on the modern shelf, yet short episodes of infaunal peaks were likely caused by lateral shifts and fluctuating influence of the Leeuwin Current during more intense glacial cycles.

The main argument of this thesis is that history curatorship in Australia does not, as yet, possess a mature critical culture. While there is a growing literature in the academy about museums, there is surprisingly little material written by practising history curators. History curatorship, as such, lacks a tradition of critical writing about its professional practice. All too often curators move from one project to the next with little time to reflect on the way they work. While some curators have written about their work the impression emerges that history curators are still struggling to define what it is they do and how they do it. In this thesis I explore the relationship between theory and practice, or praxis, in relation to history curatorship. In most exhibitions curators seek to apply a theoretical framework to the subject matter they are working on. In some instances this is a self conscious process and in others it is implicit in their work. I will explore a series of case studies from projects I have completed at the NMA to explore this relationship in my own work. As such the thesis is designed to be an interrogation of my own professional practice. Reflecting on the work I have completed provides some valuable insights into the practice of history curatorship.

The study uses racialisation as a lens to understand the racist experiences of ordinary Asian Australians. It examines the racialisation processes underlying these experiences and explores the strategies employed to respond to and mitigate the impact of being racialised. It addresses the need to develop the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of racialisation and anti-racism in light of the dearth of research work on these especially in Australia. Different elements from various theories were drawn to frame the empirical investigation since no single theory was adequate as anchor for this qualitative study. In-depth interviews and focus groups with 64 Asian Australians generated rich narratives that provided interesting insights on the personal, political, and spiritual dimensions of human experience that connect the lives of racialised subjects. Deconstructing stories of racialised subjects laid bare the essence of racist experiences by revealing insights into when and how race becomes a salient signifier of difference. Racialisation provides a productive way of understanding racist experiences since it allows for the unpacking of the multi-layered linked processes of racial categorisation, racial differentiation and problematisation, marginalisation and exclusion, inferiorisation and devaluation. These processes are ordinarily part of the experiences of minority people. They constitute what can be called 'everyday racialisation'. The study uses stress-coping theory to examine the long-term and cumulative impact of being part of a racialised group. It shows how exposure to racism stressors has multifarious effects on the health and well-being of racialised subjects. The everyday racialisation of minority groups affects their socio-psychological functioning and limits the life chances and economic opportunities available to them. In addition, the study demonstrates how Asian Australians cope with the stress of their everyday racialisation by drawing from their personal repertoire of discursive, cognitive and behavioural strategies. These, in combination with outside support mechanisms, make up what can be termed ?everyday anti-racism? strategies. Racialisation provides valuable insights into when, how and why racialised subjects deploy these different strategies to negotiate, contest and bridge the constraints and boundaries imposed on them. The study offers an integrated model for understanding racialisation experience and lays the foundation for developing further the concepts of 'everyday racialisation' and 'everyday antiracism'.

This thesis examines the use of new technology in the post-war Australian poultry and pig industries and the implications of this technology for animal welfare. The literature on animal welfare and technology adoption has been brought together using an organisations perspective. It is argued that in order to understand why new technology has been adopted it is necessary to examine the organisations and institutions which influence farmer decision-making. Farmers are constrained to varying degrees by the organisations and institutions in their operational environment and as they have adopted increasingly sophisticated technology developed off the farm they have lost further control over decision-making. The theoretical framework emphasises the interaction between farmers and organisations but also takes account of the wider political economy and the role of individuals. The separate chapters discuss the changes that have occurred in the layer, broiler and pig industries. The use of intensive technology has increased efficiency and reduced uncertainty in the production process. Balanced against these advantages are welfare disadvantages. Intensive technology has been criticised by welfare groups who have put new pressures on farmers. As a result farmers have been placed in a difficult situation: to remain economically viable they have been forced to adopt new technology yet at the same time they have been criticised for using it. Analysis focuses on the differing perspectives taken by the major groups in the welfare debate in order to clarify their positions. The determination of welfare is discussed with reference to the problems involved in assessing optimum or even acceptable conditions. There are a number of areas in which welfare and farm profits can be improved together, and others where increased animal welfare will incur higher costs. These will have to be met by the consumer, either directly through higher prices or indirectly through subsidies to the industries.

It is well documented that rural and remote Australian residents have poorer access to medical services than their counterparts in capital cities. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in 1998 there were 75.3 vocationally registered general practitioners per 100,000 population in rural and remote areas, compared with 103.0 per 100,000 in metropolitan areas. In 1998 28.7% of the Australian population lived in rural and remote areas, so a substantial proportion of the Australian population is adversely affected by the unequal distribution of general practitioners. Australian country communities highly regard the services of general practitioners and they continue to demand residential medical services. Demand is driven by need for access to health services, but also by the intimate inter-relationships between the general practice and community sustainability. For example, the general practice contributes to the viability of the local hospital which is often a major employer in the district. Consequently, many country communities strive to keep their general practice by contributing to practice infrastructure, providing governance, raising funds for medical equipment, and actively helping recruitment.

Abstract:
A comprehensive and rigid analysis of Chinese investment in Australia for the past four decades is an under-researched topic, though there had been sporadic treatments of this subject matter from the perspective of single institutions in economics, politics, and culture. The neoliberalism era marked a honeymoon between China and Australia, which boosted the Chinese investments in Australia, marked by the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement and the ‘One Belt One Road Initiative’ Agreement, signed by the Victorian Government and the Chinese Development and Reform Commission. Recent years witnessed a deterioration of the Australia and China relationships and the “tit-for-tat” strategies and racism movements which discourage the Chinese investments in Australia. This study has developed a conceptual framework consisting of economic, political, cultural and institutional factors that may explain the Australian government’s decision of rejecting certain Chinese investments in recent years. Case studies were employed to illustrate the application of the conceptual framework. The findings suggest that the conceptual framework can be utilized to explain why the Australian government rejected certain Chinese investments. This research aims to analyze the determinants of Australia Government’s rejection of Chinese investment in Australia. Case studies in the field of the Australian mining sector, agriculture and agribusiness, and infrastructure unveil that political distrust towards Chinese investment in Australia is a major source of refusing Chinese investment. This led to continuous reduction of Chinese investment in Australia since 2016. Such political distrust which works against the national interest of the respective countries, may also drive the decline of Chinese investment in Australia. This research contributes to the literature by examining the factors which lead to the Australian Government’s decision to reject certain Chinese investments based on in depth analysis of case studies. This will be useful for understanding how to enlarge shared interest for policymakers, businessmen and academic researchers.

Abstract:
Measuring the progress of nations by only focusing on economic growth is inadequate. New measures such as life satisfaction have been put forward as an option to use alongside gross domestic product (GDP). The notions of life satisfaction or subjective wellbeing have been around for many years as central elements of quality of life, but until recently they were not generally accepted as serious, replicable indicators. During the last two decades, however, there has been an increasing body of evidence showing that life satisfaction can be measured in surveys, and that these are reliable and valid measures. There is a large and growing body of research that seeks to learn more about the contribution different factors make to overall 'life satisfaction' (Ambrey & Fleming, 2011). The enumeration and demarcation of factors contributing to life satisfaction is often arbitrary. Some researchers use a small number of relatively aggregated indicators (Gross Domestic Product is a well-known example of an aggregate indicator, in that it is a single number that captures information about a very large variety of factors); others use a very large number of indicators (Rojas, 2006a). There remains little certainty and no agreed rules for the operationalization of a life-satisfaction construct (Cummins, 1998; Hsieh, 2015; Rojas, 2006b); but much effort has sought to determine which indicators (i.e., what numbers or what type of data), from which domains are better for predicting life satisfaction. The aim of this thesis is to test the life satisfaction approach in two case studies separately, my main objective being to identify ways of assessing and monitoring the contribution of the domains and types of indicators to people's life satisfaction in each case. I also specifically focused on the environmental domain, and the indicators that are being used. To achieve this aim I focused on three core questions: RESEARCH QUESTION 1: Do some domains appear to contribute more to life satisfaction in developed countries than in developing countries? RESEARCH QUESTION 2: Which indicators (objective and/or subjective) best represent which domains when measuring the contribution of different domains to life satisfaction in different socio-economic contexts? RESEARCH QUESTION 3: Do environmental factors, other than those 'normally' considered (such as those relating to climate and pollution) contribute to life satisfaction? The case study sites used include Costa Rica and the Northern Territory and outback Queensland in Australia (referred to as Northern Australia). In Costa Rica, I collected primary data from a sample of residents. I designed my own questionnaire to collect data about overall life satisfaction and about contributors to life satisfaction. Following previous literature I included questions about five life domains relating to: society, economy, the environment, health and safety. I then asked a series of questions designed to gather both 'subjective' and 'objective' information about each of the five life domains. I also collected some background information on income and occupational status plus other sociodemographic factors known to influence life satisfaction (including age, gender and education). Where-ever possible, I endeavoured to collect 'matching' subjective and objective indicators for variables (e.g. satisfaction with, and actual time spent with family). For the case study in Northern Australia I used sub-set of secondary data from a cross-sectional survey of land managers (gathered as part of a research project funded by the Australian Government's National Environmental Research Project (NERP)). The data provided from this project included subjective information regarding the perceptions of land managers about their overall life satisfaction and additional objective and subjective indicators across the social and economic domains, and a subjective indicator from the environmental domain. Recognising that the environment may also be important to land managers for non-productive purposes, I thus also compiled additional information relating to aquatic biodiversity data from other resources, in addition to other biophysical information about vegetation type, soil type and places of interest (e.g. national heritage places, wetlands of national or international significance). I found evidence to suggest that the economic domain is probably the most important domain for Costa Rican residents – at least some variables from this domain were statistically significant for the entire sample and for each sub-sample that I tested. Regarding the type of indicators from each domain, both subjective and objective indicators had a statistically significant relationship with measures of overall life satisfaction; but the type of indicators that were relevant for each domain were different. It was a subjective (rather than objective) indicator of satisfaction with housing (mostly associated with the economic domain) that had a positive association with life satisfaction for Costa Rican residents. But for the health domain, it was the objective (rather than the subjective) indicator – specifically, time spent exercising – that had a positive association with life satisfaction. Only within one sub-sample (employed persons living in an urban area adjacent to beaches and/or protected areas), did an environmental indicator – in this case, frequency of interaction with the environment – have a positive association with life satisfaction. My analysis of land managers in Northern Australia also demonstrated that life satisfaction depends on multiple domains and that, using both subjective and objective indicators adds value to the analysis. In this case, the social domain had the strongest statistical association with life satisfaction: the single most important indicator of land managers' life satisfaction was having good relationships with family and friends. In contrast to the Costa Rican case, I did not find a statistically significant relationship between the economic domain indicators and life satisfaction. Different people in different places value different things, according to my study. GDP alone is not a good indicator of life satisfaction; other indicators should be considered. My research demonstrates that there is a need to monitor multiple domains (including, at minimum, those from the social, economic, environmental and probably also health and safety domains), using both objective and subjective indicators. My research also demonstrates that one can expect different indicators to 'matter' at different stages of development of a country. If governments lack the resources to monitor a large variety of indicators, it may be possible to, at the very least, include a single question about overall life satisfaction within their regular censuses, thus readily monitoring more than mere GDP, in a cost-effective way.

This research project is predominantly aimed at improving our understanding of interest group behaviour. Assessments about 'group interest' and decisions about group engagement in the Australian greenhouse policy network provide a useful opportunity to pursue this research aim. As an empirical contribution to the study of interest groups and policy networks, this research is atypical in a few ways. First, while most of the literature concentrates on the role of interest groups and policy networks in explaining policy outcomes, this study focuses on understanding group behaviour. Second, while the literature concerns itself heavily with group-government relationships, the focus here is on group decision-making about network engagementrelationships with government are addressed only to the extent that they impact on these decisions. Third, while most interest group research assumes that groups know and pursue their interests, or that behaviour reveals group preferences, this research does neither. Instead there is a strong emphasis on what forces shape and change perceptions of group interest and no assumption that groups necessarily pursue those perceived interests. These differences necessarily mean that this work does not deal heavily with some of the main preoccupations in the literature-like why groups mobilise and whether they are good for society. Instead, light is shone on aspects of interest groups and policy networks which are acknowledged as important but receive relatively little attention. Alongside the primary objective--to make the empirical contribution to the literature-the aim here is also to contribute to a greater understanding of the history of greenhouse policy development in Australia. This is seen as being valuable in its own right and it addresses widespread curiosity about why business groups with an apparent interest in climate change policy have responded so differently in the Australian context The result is seven case studies which examine the greenhouse responses of a diverse range of business interest groups that have been active in, or judged relevant to the Australian greenhouse policy network. The case studies rely heavily on analysis of interviews conducted with 56 people drawn both from the case groups and from a broad cross-section of other important players in the greenhouse policy network. As a study of the wider policy network, this work is arguably unprecedented in scope. Those interviewed include party leaders, cabinet ministers, advisors and departmental secretaries spanning the Hawke, Keating and Howard federal governments. Past and present leaders of industry associations, think tanks, environmental organisations, along with academics, and journalists were also interviewed with all sides of the debate represented. The results presented here aim to make an commensurate contribution to our knowledge of both interest group behaviour and greenhouse policy development in Australia.

Little nursing research has focused on understanding the perceptions and experiences of Muslim people within health care systems, particularly in Australia. This study provided an opportunity to explore, and document the experience of the hospitalisation for Islamic people and thereby advance the available information upon which important nursing care decisions that relate to this group can be more informatively made. This study aims to explore and interpret the lived experience of thirteen Muslim patients who had been hospitalised in an Australian hospital. The hermeneutic phenomenology of Heidegger (1967/1996), the philosophical hermeneutics of Gadamer (1989), and the ideas of van Manen (1990/1996) underpin this study. The meaning and understanding of the everyday experience of Muslim patient in a non-Islamic hospital is achieved through interpretation of the participants’ stories. Data were generated using unstructured audio-taped interviews from participants. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed, then interpreted using phenomenological methods. The two themes to emerge from the participants’ experiences are: Being-thrown-into-an-un-everyday-world and living-Islam-in-the-un-everyday-world. The theme of Being-thrown-into-an-un-everyday-world arose from the sub-themes of the awareness of self and Being an outsider. The theme living-Islam-in-the-un-everyday-world was drawn from the three sub-themes of Being the same and different, hindrances to being Muslim, and adapting-to-the-un-everyday-world. The findings of this study provide an insight into the experience of Muslims being cared for in Australian hospitals. It is hoped that this interpretation will make a significant contribution to the care of Muslim patients by having health professionals consider how this group could be cared for in a culturally sensitive manner. It is not intended as a prescription for care but draws the reader to reflect on aspects of the Muslim faith and how this may impact on individuals experience when in hospital. The scope of this study and the dearth of available research in this area conclude that much more research needs to be undertaken.

The Theory of Disruptive Technologies put forward by Clayton Christensen in 1997 has attracted significant attention. This case study tests the hypothesis that the theory is generalisable to new situations. It uses datasource triangulation by using document, statistical and interview analyses (including investigator triangulation) to apply the Theory to Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT) and finds that the Program may indeed be a disruptive technology in relation to academic libraries, universities and to the publishing industry. However, it has greater potential to be disruptive in the latter, and to be a sustaining technology, as defined by the Theory, in relation to libraries and universities.

Enterprises today are facing unprecedented challenges and are required to change their approach to provisioning and consuming technology services. Cloud computing is a key enabler for this change. Being acclaimed as a disruptive innovation, cloud computing has contributed to the success of start-ups and industry disrupters, since it allows them to provide technology services at speed and scale without the commitment and investment of costly technology infrastructure. However, despite general acceptance by organizations worldwide, cloud computing adoption by large enterprises, particularly those from highly regulated industries such as financial services, has been slow and its utilization has so far been in very limited areas. It is important to understand the factors which impact these large organizations’ decision for adopting and utilizing cloud computing, so that actions can be taken to facilitate the adoption and utilization processes. The objective of this study is to gain deep understanding of drivers and challenges associated with cloud computing adoption and utilization by large financial institutions in Australia. Through multiple case study grounded on the TOE framework, involving a major bank and a large insurance company in Australia, this study reveals a common set of drivers and challenges, which will be useful for guiding cloud adoption and utilization for companies in similar situations. It also recommends actions for overcoming challenges identified through this study.

The diplomacy of the modern 21st century has shown the changes of using the platform for public diplomacy. The application of information technology, media and Internet in order to expand information and worldwide communication in diplomacy is called digital diplomacy. In recent years, many governments all over the world, such as Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have used digital diplomacy in their foreign affairs. Three research questions were asked: a) What are the strengths when conducting digital diplomacy? b) What are the weaknesses when conducting digital diplomacy? and, c) What should a nation consider when conducting digital diplomacy? Through a six-week observation and monitoring of these six countries’ websites and Facebook pages, this research aimed to figure out the strengths and weaknesses when conducting digital diplomacy by using Selim’s adaptation of Cowan and Arsenault’s three layer-rubric of monologue (websites), dialogue (Facebook pages) and collaboration (website). It was revealed that all websites, in differing levels, met the criteria of monologue properties of accessibility and visibility, accuracy and credibility, authority, coverage and currency, interactivity, orientation, navigability. For dialogue, all websites, again, in different levels, met the criteria of accessibility and visibility, accuracy and credibility, authority, coverage and currency. Although frequent updates of Facebook page statuses were observed, in terms of interaction, not much interaction between the public and the governments was observed. For collaboration, only the United States has met this criterion through a website design but there was no activity observed. It was recommended that countries should continue to improve the operation of digital diplomacy, especially for the dialogue layer. Keywords: Digital Diplomacy, Public Diplomacy, Soft Power.

Abstract:
This thesis has two principle objectives: to provide geochronological data for the Late Archean Murchison Province of Western Australia and to assess the strengths and limitations of the ion microprobe zircon dating technique. A project was conducted to provide zircon U/Pb age measurements on seven granitoid samples from the Murchison granite-greenstone terrain. These data represent the first systematic U/Pb age survey for the granitoids from this 100,000 km2 region. The oldest sample found in region was from a pegmatite-banded gneiss which contained a complex zircon population, the best estimate for the emplacement age for the magmatic precursor is circa 2919 ± 12 Ma (1cr). Two samples of recrystallized monzogranite, by far the dominant lithology in the region, gave emplacement ages of 2704 ± 51 and 2681 ± 6 Ma. Two samples from the southern post-folding granitoid suite gave ages of 2641 ± 5 and 2602 ± 14 Ma. Two samples collected from a pluton previously assigned to the northern post-folding granitoid suite gave ages of 2760 ± 8 and 2784 ± 22 Ma; this pluton has now been reinterpreted as a heretofore unrecognized synvolcanic suite which may be coeval with the nearby Mount Farmer greenstones. In addition to providing the first zircon age determinations for the major granitoid units in the area, these data also constrain the eruption ages of the two greenstone sequences and the timing of the regional deformation and metamorphic events. The absence of mid-Archean or older xenocrysts implies that the central Murchison Province is solely a product of Late Archean crustal growth. The success of this project was closely linked to the availability of a detailed tectonic model based on extensive field mapping by the Geological Survey of Western Australia. During this survey of the Murchison Province a unique sample was encountered which gave unusually reversely discordant U/Pb systematics. An extensive investigation of this phenomena revealed the presence of a well-mixed, highly radiogenic Pb which apparently entered the zircon population at circa 0 Ma. Based on isotope dilution data, it appears that the sputtering characteristics of this external component deviated significantly from the calibration standard which was used to determine the ion microprobes U/Pb discrimination factor. A second field-oriented project was conducted at Poona Rock, a typical outcrop of the 3500 km2 Murgoo Gneisses located along the western margin of the Murchison Province. Ion microprobe zircon analyses of six samples from this isolated outcrop all gave Late Archean emplacement ages. Because of the rapid evolution of Poona Rock, these data provided a rare opportunity to define precisely the age of the deformation which is seen on both the local and regional scales. This led to an extensive investigation of the accuracy and precision of the ion microprobe method. It was discovered that the ages calculated could be significantly affected by the assumptions made during the data assessment process. In complex data sets, the use of error estimates based on Poisson ion counting resulted in certain samples being designated as outliers which, when using more generous error assignments based on observed internal reproducibilities, apparently were part of the magmatic population. The complex U/Pb systematics observed in the samples were further attested to by the zircon structures and morphologies seen in these six samples. All analyses reported here were tested for excess internal error in their Pb/Pb ratios. The seven scans of the mass spectrum were compared to a mixing line joining the mean of the seven scans and an assumed common Pb end-member. In many cases it was found that the observed scatter of the data away from this mixing line was greater than that predicted by the best-possible-limit imposed by the observed ion count rates. A further refinement to the data assessment was the introduction of a best-fit plane technique for calculating the concordia intercept ages of a pool of data. This method has two advantages over data assessment based on the mean 207PbJ206pb ratio: this 3-dimensional approach requires neither an assumed common Pb composition nor an assumed 0 Ma lower concordia intercept. Despite these advantages, the best-fit plane method is unable to define a magmatic age when a population contains numerous measurements which diverge only slightly from the main population. Finally, an assessment of the 312 measurements conducted on the SL3 standard showed the presence of a previously unrecognized and significant fractionation of the Pb isotopic spectrum. The magnitude of the ion microprobe's fractionation is estimated at between 3 and 5%o per mass unit. This conclusion is directly dependent on the 572 Ma age which has been assigned to the SL3 standard.
