Lombardo, Luca. Albertino Mussato, Epistole metriche Edizione critica, traduzione e commento. Venice: Fondazione Università Ca’ Foscari, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-436-3.

Full text
Abstract:
The Metric Epistles of Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) are a collection of 20 compositions in Latin verse (of which, 12 in elegiac couplets, 8 in hexameters, for a total of 1,570 verses) composed between 1309 and 1326 and addressed to different recipients. The list of recipients includes friends of the author and representatives of the Paduan political and intellectual élite of the early 14th century such as the judges Rolando da Piazzola, Giovanni da Vigonza and Paolo da Teolo, the notary Zambono d’Andrea and Marsilio Mainardini; masters of grammar and rhetoric such as the Venetian Giovanni Cassio, Bonincontro from Mantua and Guizzardo from Bologna; religious personalities such as the Dominican friars Benedetto and Giovannino da Mantova, respectively lecturer and professor of theology at the Studium Generale of the convent of S. Agostino in Padua; collective recipients, such as the College of Artists and fellow citizens of Padua. After an editio princeps was printed in Venice in 1636 on the basis of a now lost manuscript, a critical edition of the Epistles is published here for the first time, including the complete corpus of the texts in the light of their entire manuscript tradition. The texts are accompanied by an Italian translation and a detailed commentary, which mainly aims to bring to light and analyse the dense intertextuality of Mussato’s poem (in particular classical Latin sources), reconsidering the cultural background of the author and his contemporaries in the context of the so-called ‘Paduan prehumanism’ and an ideal dialogue with Dante’s coeval biographical and literary experiences.

Wendling, Miriam, ed. Cardinal Adam Easton (c. 1330-1397). NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463726528.

Full text
Abstract:
The varied career of Adam Easton (c.1330—1397) led him from Norwich Cathedral Priory to Oxford, Avignon and Rome. Not only a monk of the Benedictine Order, he was also a scholar, theologian, diplomat and cardinal, and his work reflects the breadth of this multifaceted background. This volume presents recent research on Easton’s oeuvre, his diplomacy and the books that accompanied him on his travels. Amongst the works addressed in this volume are Easton’s Defensorium ecclesiastice potestatis, his Defensorium Sanctae Birgittae and his Office for the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Further evidence is also offered on his testimony during the Great Schism, on the dating of his copy of De pauperie Salvatoris, while two reassessments are made of his likeness, including his sepulchral monument at S. Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome and the Lutterworth wall painting. Finally, a catalogue of Easton’s important manuscript collection is also provided.

Williams, Ian. Common Law Scholarship and the Written Word. Edited by Lorna Hutson. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199660889.013.4.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers early modern common law scholarship both in the Inns of Court and outside of them. It investigates the relationship between oral scholarship in the Inns, manuscript, and printed texts. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have been identified as the period in which the common law changed from a system of predominantly oral learning to one based primarily on texts. Particular attention is paid to the issue of the circulation of legal scholarship, particularly in manuscript, the possibility of scribal production, and the limits on such circulation. The chapter also considers the purpose(s) behind certain forms of scholarship, such as patronage, and the textual sources used by common lawyers.

Hardy, Thomas, and Penny Boumelha. Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Edited by Simon Gatrell and Juliet Grindle. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199537051.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘She looked absolutely pure. Nature, in her fantastic trickery, had set such a seal of maidenhood upon Tess s countenance that he gazed at her with a stupefied air: “Tess– say it is not true! No, it is not true!”’ Young Tess Durbeyfield attempts to restore her family's fortunes by claiming their connection with the aristocratic d'Urbervilles. But Alec d'Urberville is a rich wastrel who seduces her and makes her life miserable. When Tess meets Angel Clare, she is offered true love and happiness, but her past catches up with her and she faces an agonizing moral choice. Hardy's indictment of society's double standards, and his depiction of Tess as ‘a pure woman’, caused controversy in his day and has held the imagination of readers ever since. Hardy thought it his finest novel, and Tess the most deeply felt character he ever created. This unique critical text is taken from the authoritative Clarendon edition, which is based on the manuscript collated with all Hardy's subsequent revisions.

Wolff, Christoph. Did J. S. Bach Write Organ Concertos? University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040191.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the prehistory of the cantata movements with obbligato organ and asks whether Johann Sebastian Bach wrote organ concertos by focusing on the sinfonias of his Cantatas 146 and 169. Bach presented church cantatas with concertato organ sinfonias several times between 1725 and 1728. This can only mean that neither the clergy, the congregation, nor anyone else objected to this innovative type of church music. This chapter analyzes the two first entries in the autograph manuscript P 234 (ca. 1738), the D-minor and E-major harpsichord concertos (BWV 1052–1053) and their related movements in cantatas 49, 146, 169, and 188, and challenges the notion that they are concertos for violin, oboe, or any other solo instrument. Instead, it argues that they are keyboard concertos in the same two keys and were designed for performance on either harpsichord or organ. The chapter concludes that Bach composed such works primarily for his own use, sketching out a solo part and making appropriate adjustments and improvisatory elaborations as needed at either harpsichord or organ.
