Abstract:
Partial hypermelanosis was observed on the blind side of one specimen of wild brill (Colistium guntheri) with a total length of 330mm, collected from Manukau Harbour, south of Auckland City, New Zealand. This is the first record of brill blind-side hypermelanosis from New Zealand waters. The specimen showed broad melanic patches running mainly at the base of the dorsal and anal fins. Causes for such colour aberration are discussed.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Extensive research has shown the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Green Prescription (GRx) but none has focused on the experiences of Pacific women who have been through the GRx programme. The research aim was to investigate the experience of the GRx programme for Pacific women in Auckland, New Zealand. METHODS: Qualitative data from in-depth interviews with 20 Pacific women aged 40 years and older, who had been members of a GRx programme in Auckland City and Counties Manukau and had been discharged as independently active. FINDINGS: Pacific women had positive experiences of the GRx programme and identified an improvement in their physical activity, lifestyle behaviours and consequent health improvements. Positive experiences can be attributable to the social and friendly atmosphere created by their peers and staff, exercise options, and education workshop components. The social aspect of the GRx programme was the primary reason the women enjoyed and completed the programme. CONCLUSION: Pacific women reported health improvements from participation in the GRx programme. Further research is indicated to explore the health impact of the GRx for Pacific people and the benefits and acceptability of the programme for Pacific ethnic groups. Tyler, Linda. ""The hours and times of your desire": Sholto Smith's romantic vision for Colwyn (1925)." Architectural History Aotearoa 8 (January 1, 2011): 58–65. http://dx.doi.org/10.26686/aha.v8i.7101.

Abstract:
Early in 1920, French-born architect Sholto Smith (1881-1936) decided to abandon his Moose Jaw practice, and his Canadian wife and family, and emigrate to New Zealand. His decision seems to have been precipitated by a memorable encounter with a woman who would later become a celebrated pianist for the Auckland radio station 1YA, Phyllis Mary Hams (1895-1974). Sholto Smith had met Hams during World War I while he was on leave from the Canadian Expeditionary Force and visiting Colwyn Bay, North Wales. Sholto Smith's major contribution to Arts and Crafts Auckland, the house he designed as a gift for Phyllis Hams on the occasion of their marriage on 3 March 1925, was named Colwyn to memorialise their Welsh meeting place. Despite only living in New Zealand for his last 16 years, Sholto Smith left a legacy of over 100 buildings. Colwyn was a well-placed advertisement for his domestic architecture, and his Arts and Crafts and Tudor house designs were soon in great demand throughout the building boom of the 1920s. Smith had arrived in Auckland on 17 March 1920 and immediately joined the practice of Thomas Coulthard Mullions (1878-1957) and C Fleming McDonald. The latter had been the architect of the original Masonic Hotel in Napier (1897), and the firm originally specialised in hotels and commercial architecture using modern materials including reinforced concrete, but dressing the modernist structure with historicist references. Several of their inner-city Auckland buildings such as the Waitemata and Manukau Council building on the corner of Shortland and Princes Street, Chancery Chambers in O'Connell Street and the Lister building on the corner of Victoria and Lorne Streets, still survive. After McDonald's death, Sholto Smith became a partner in the firm and encouraged Thomas Mullions to move into residential property development in central Auckland: Shortland Flats (1922) was a commercial venture where the architects formed a company owning shares in the building which comprised 24 flats designed to generate rental income. But detached suburban domestic architecture was Sholto Smith's real passion. Before leaving Canada for fresh beginnings in New Zealand, he drew an architectural perspective for his ideal home. He titled this drawing Dreamwold, and his vision for this ideal house was to be realised in Auckland at 187 St Heliers Bay Road. For this house design, Sholto Smith drew inspiration from Canadian colleagues such as British Columbian architect Samuel Maclure (1860-1929) and from the British masters of the Arts and Crafts Movement including CFA Voysey (1857-1951) and MH Baillie Scott (1865-1945). Colwyn is reminiscent of the latter's Corrie Wood (1908) in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire in its adventurous open planning. A little bit of Olde Englande recreated in the South Pacific for his homesick new wife, Colwyn was Sholto Smith's perfect Dreamwold, right down to the text on the wooden mantelpiece over the fireplace. The quote inscribed there is taken from the beginning of Shakespeare's sonnet 57, and seems addressed by Smith to his 30-year-old bride: "Being your slave, what should I do but tend upon the hours and times of your desire?" Epitomising the romantic archetype, Colwyn remains a fine example of the type of Arts and Crafts dwelling that well-to-do Aucklanders aspired to inhabit in the 1920s.

Full text
Abstract:
There is continuing concern over the complications arising in pregnancies resulting from the abnormal development of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT)-derived embryos. Hydrallantois (hydrops), reported widely in the cloning field, is a potentially dangerous condition that can rapidly progress to extreme abdominal distension, anorexia, lethargy, recumbency, and, finally, death of the cow if left untreated. Recipient cattle diagnosed with hydrops are commonly slaughtered or euthanized, resulting in the loss of proven recipients or market value, respectively. This has led to a growing perception that cloning is potentially unsafe for the recipients, which has ethical implications for the commercialization and public acceptance of SCNT cloning (Lassen et al. 2006 Theriogenology 65, 992–1004). Here, we report on the successful use of recipient dams after termination of hydrops pregnancies. Records from over 8 years of non-transgenic SCNT single embryo transfers (n = 1531) into 560 multiparous, mixed age and breed cattle revealed 100 diagnosed cases of hydrops, i.e. 13% (100/765) of all Day 35 pregnancies were eventually diagnosed as hydrops between Days 150 and 220 by rectal palpation. In the early years, 12 of these recipients were slaughtered to recover maternal, placental, and fetal tissues. In later years, after the diagnosis of hydrops between Days 150 and 220 of gestation by repeated rectal palpation, 88 hydrops pregnancies were electively terminated after single IM injections of 25 mg long-acting dexamethasone (dexamethasone trimethylacetate, Dexavet; Bomac Laboratories, Manukau City, New Zealand) followed 5 days later by topical cervical application of prostaglandin F2α (Berg et al. 2006 7th Int. Ruminant Reprod. Symp., abst ? 10). Following adequate cervical softening and dilation, the commonly found over-sized, abdominally distended fetuses were safely delivered per vaginum prior to fetal death. The recipients were then aggressively treated with intrauterine and systemic oxytetracycline and repeated alternate day injections of prostaglandins until cleared of all retained placenta and membranes. After the minimal 60-day recovery period and assessment of return to cyclicity, 24/40 (60%) of these animals became pregnant within two rounds of single embryo SCNT transfer, with an overall embryo survival of 40% (27/67) at Day 35. This is not statistically different from the embryo survival rate of 50% (765/1531) for the entire herd over the 8 years. These data also confirm that the cause of hydrops resides mainly with the SCNT embryos and is not an inherent recipient problem. Thus, with early diagnosis and termination, and avoiding the exposure of the recipient to necrotic fetal tissues by careful delivery of live fetuses, these animals can successfully recover and be re-used to carry subsequent pregnancies or be salvaged for commercial slaughter. Application of this approach for the treatment of hydrops can considerably reduce the wastage of recipient animals and ameliorate some of the animal welfare concerns with cloning technology.

Abstract:
Surabaya is the capital of the province of East Java and is the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. As a city that will continue to develop, the mobility of the people is getting higher, as well as the progress of the current means of transportation which is increasing, causing traffic problems, one of which occurs at intersections. One of the intersections that will be reviewed is the Raya Manukan intersection. This study uses the MKJI 1997 guideline, with primary data collection by means of traffic conditions survey and secondary collection, namely data on the number of vehicle growth from the Department of Population and Civil Registry of Surabaya City. This study aims to determine the performance of the unsigned intersection at the Raya Manukan intersection. With this research data, as well as from the results of traffic analysis at the Raya Manukan intersection with the boundary from the Amd Street Intersection to the Buntaran Street Intersection. From the calculation results, it is obtained that the intersection capacity is 3750.9 pcu / hour, with a degree of saturation value of 0.8254. From the results of the analysis, the calculations that have been carried out have not been able to reach the desired degree of saturation value, which is as suggested by MKJI 1997.Therefore then an alternative is made with road widening engineering and produces a saturation degree value of 0.7493, so that the road widening on Raya Manukan Kulon is the best alternative in solving the capacity problem of Intersection Manukan.

Abstract:
AbstractThe subject of this article is theBook on Saving Lives(Jiuming shu) written by the late Ming scholar-official Lü Kun. The book enjoyed great popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties and offers practical advice for those who were in charge of city defense. Lü wrote this text in anticipation of imminent social crises. His prime motivation was to save the lives of his fellow countrymen when “bandits” attacked the county seat. The book, which is a survival manual rather than a handbook for magistrates, was written for military non-professionals who would lead the civilian population to defend the county. On the other hand, the text is of a military nature and refers to the military function of Chinese towns. The majority of the book deals with military preparedness. Although the book also discusses various aspects of city defense such as weapons, tactics, fortification, training, and military law, Lü himself lacked combat experience. In this respect, the book illustrates a dilemma: The defense of small cities lay beyond the scope of the central government. This placed the responsible officials in a difficult and contradictory situation. The magistrate, for example, was not prepared for the job. He lacked military experience but had to lead the local population into war. Despite his power, he depended on the cooperation of the people, including the assistance of rich families and the support of armed villagers skilled in martial arts. In this way, Lü Kun’s treatise illustrates the consequences of earlier political decisions to concentrate the military on the northern border and around the capital.

For the first time, psychiatrists have explicitly recognized the connection between urban violence and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Using the new DSM-IV definition, this article reexamines the use of the PTSD insanity defense in inner-city criminal cases. After investigating the extent to which inner-city defendants meet the criteria of PTSD, the author outlines how the legal system has applied the PTSD insanity defense in criminal cases and explores the policy implications of those defenses. The author concludes that although many inner-city defendants can meet the medical and psychological criteria of PTSD, the legal system should not encourage such defenses. Instead, the author advocates using knowledge about inner-city PTSD to design creative crime-prevention strategies.

Constructing dynamic building models of entire urban districts or cities is a time consuming effort. An automation process is required to shorten the considerable time needed for manual input and to parameterize simulation tools. This paper presents a generation tool for fully automated thermal city modelling that generates dynamic building models with detailed heating systems. The tool is an interface between a PostgreSQL database and the dynamic building energy simulation environment IDA ICE. Tests show that up to 300 automated generated buildings with a simple geometry and 70 buildings each with a heating system can be simulated per CPU.

Abstract:
Condition assessment is a key component of successful asset management, and many diverse condition assessment protocols exist for sewer mains. These protocols are used to generate condition grades for sewer mains after inspection. Condition assessment protocols are important because renewal actions for sewers are prioritized based on condition grades. If condition grades assigned to sewers do not reflect actual pipe conditions close enough, the resulting allocation of resources will not be the best. This paper presents a comparison of three possible sewer condition assessment protocols for the City of Edmonton: the Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program quick grading method, the Manual of Sewer Condition Classification fourth edition, and the City of Edmonton’s Sewer Physical Condition Classification Manual. The results show that structural sewer condition grades depend significantly on the protocol used; therefore, protocol selection has significant financial consequences for asset management programs in the city.

Abstract:
Background: The Green school audit is a tool designed to help school communities to audit their use of natural resources. It provides schools with the methodology to become environmental managers by assessing themselves. Green school audit was part of green games initiatives of commonwealth youth games Pune 2008 with objective to carry out environmental audit of schools involving school children. Methods: The programme was carried out from March 2008 to October 2008 as a part of Green Games initiative of Commonwealth Youth Games. Twenty two schools voluntarily participated in this programme. Four medical students per school and one teacher from the Department of Community Medicine were posted per school to train one school teacher and twenty five school children about the audit. Each school was provided with a Green School manual; a do it yourself (DIY) guide that helped students to assess the five key elements that comprises their school’s environment namely air, water, land, energy and waste. Results: 15 schools were in green zone for air audit, 9 schools were in green zone for water audit, 11 schools were in green zone for land audit, 13 schools were in green zone for waste audit and 10 schools were in green zone for energy audit. Conclusions: This assessment helped each participating school to identify where it currently stood and where it should be with regard to the environmental standards prescribed in the manual. This is a learning programme for students helping them to develop environmentally conscious attitudes and ultimately a responsible behavior.

Abstract:
A pilot zoning study has been carried out for ground shaking hazard in the city of Christchurch, using the grade-3 procedures of the draft manual on seismic zonation for geotechnical hazards, being developed by Technical Committee TC-4 of the ISSMFE. Because of limited site data, we were not able to produce a complete zoning map for the city, but ground motions were estimated at six distinct sites for which borehole data was available, and this provided a good test for the procedures of the manual. The city of Christchurch is situated on nearly 1 km of volcanic rock and alluvial sediments overlying greywacke basement, on the edge of the main seismic region of New Zealand. In addition to being an interesting site from the point of view of ground shaking, there are also liquefaction and slope stability hazards in the alluvial and beach sands found throughout the city, and in the recent loess deposits mantling the adjacent Port Hills. In the pilot study of ground shaking hazard, a seismicity model for the central South Island region published recently by Elder et al. (1991) was combined with the attenuation model of Kawashima et al. (1984) recommended in the draft manual, to estimate rock motion at Christchurch, described by its acceleration response spectrum. Transfer functions were computed for the site response to estimate motions at the six selected sites using the Thomson-Haskell method. The results were highly sensitive to details of. the upper 30 m or so of the soil profile. In the local context, the large disparity between our estimates of ground shaking at Christchurch and those implicit in the draft revision of NZS 4203 are disturbing. According to our study the draft code underestimates shaking by about a factor of two or more.

Distribution pipelines now require a lot of maintenance and mass renewal. We need to determine measures to maintain water quality and to carry out reconstruction of the pipeline system. In addition, the mass retirement of engineers also provides us with a serious challenge on how to transfer their knowledge and skill. In 2008 Kobe City established Kobe Waterworks Vision 2017, in which plans have been set out to realize ‘safety’, ‘relief’, ‘sustainability’ and so on. In order to realize the vision in the field of distribution pipelines, pipe-network reconstruction and the Manual for Water Safety Control in Distribution Network are the key practices to achieve the highest level of pipe-network management. In this paper, we present the outline and application example of these practices.

Abstract. Combining historical climatology and environmental history, this article examines the diverse range of strategies deployed by the city government of Barcelona (Catalonia, NE Spain) to confront the recurrent drought episodes experienced between 1626 and 1650. Our reconstruction of drought in Barcelona for the period 1525–1821, based on pro pluvia rogations as documentary proxy data, identifies the years 1626–1635 and the 1640s as the most significant drought events of the series (highest drought frequency weighted index and drought duration index). We then focus on the period 1601–1650, providing a timeline that visualises rain rogation levels in Barcelona at a monthly resolution. Against this backdrop, we examine institutional responses to drought and discuss how water scarcity was perceived and confronted by Barcelona city authorities. Among the several measures implemented, we present the ambitious water supply projects launched by the city government, together with the construction of windmills as an alternative to watermills, as a diversification strategy aimed at coping better with diminishing water flows. We pay special attention to the institutional efforts to codify the knowledge about Barcelona's water supply, which in 1650 resulted in the Book of Fountains of the City of Barcelona (Llibre de les Fonts de la Ciutat de Barcelona). This manual of urban water supply, written by the city water officer after 3 decades of experience in his post, constitutes a rare and valuable source to study water management history but also includes significant information to interpret historical climate. We analyse the production of this manual in the context of 3 decades marked by recurrent episodes of severe drought. We interpret the city government aspiration to codify knowledge about urban water supply as an attempt to systematise and store historical information on infrastructure to improve institutional capacities to cope with future water scarcities.

Based on the previous research on the former of Semarang capital city, Kanjengan, there is a supposition that the area is a coastal city. As the consequence of the sedimentation process occurred by Java Island, Semarang city, and some cities in Java are no longer on the seashore. The cities that are archived in the Map of Indonesia in the 15th century and some records from foreign sailors, absolutely have several different conditions compared to the past and the present condition. How the architecture and the city’s patterns of the Old Semarang? The method of this research was conducted by exploring historical articles, toponyms, maps, and old pictures which were then compared with the remaining architecture and spatial patterns. The reading of old maps and pictures was done by using the seeing by believing approach. The analysis was performed by using the manual sketch. The architectural heritage like the former lighthouse, commercial corridors in the north of the square, and toponyms were tools to prove that the area was a seaport and a waterfront city. Old Coastal Semarang has an Architecture and urban design concept as the main gate from the sea to the city center at the time. Surrounding the main gate, they were the existence of the former lighthouse (the Menara Layur Mosque), multi-ethnics houses, toponyms indicating that some places were a former harbor, and the remaining trade corridor connecting the port and the local government center. This concept is similar to the Islamic Sultanates on the north coast of Java and the waterfront-based cities in the interior of Java. It is assumed that Semarang Old city has a similar role with the other Islamic Sultanates. This area is proper to be a city conservation area and become a part that is integrated into future urban planning.

Abstract:
Dynamic simulation of district heating and cooling networks has an increased importance in the transition towards renewable energy sources and lower temperature district heating grids, as both temporal and spatial behavior need to be considered. Even though much research and development has been performed in the field, there are several pitfalls and challenges towards dynamic district heating and cooling simulation for everyday use. This article presents the experiences from developing and working with a city-scale simulator of a district heating grid located in Luleå, Sweden. The grid model in the case study is a physics based white-box model, while consumer models are either data-driven black-box or gray-box models. The control system and operator models replicate the manual and automatic operation of the combined heat and power plant. Using the functional mock-up interface standard, a co-simulation environment integrates all the models. Further, the validation of the simulator is discussed. Lessons learned from the project are presented along with future research directions, corresponding to identified gaps and challenges.

Although reliable figures showing the growth of home ownership in this period are rare, data are available for Edinburgh which indicate that tenure development in the city probably resembled that of England and Wales rather than the rest of Scotland. The relationship between income and the cost of home ownership is examined and this suggests that the main social group to move into owner occupation were probably white-collar workers. However, an analysis of occupational information from housing across a range of values in the city shows that this movement also affected manual workers and that there was a strong association between the proportions in each social class and the average rateable value of areas of housing.

Abstract:
Especially in the field of numerical simulations, such as flow and acoustic simulations, the interest in using virtual 3D models to optimize urban systems is increasing. The few instances in which simulations were already carried out in practice have been associated with an extremely high manual and therefore uneconomical effort for the processing of models. Using different ways of capturing models in Geographic Information System (GIS) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), increases the already very high complexity of the processing. To obtain virtual 3D models suitable for simulation, we developed a tool for automatic processing with the goal to establish ties between the world of GIS and CAE. In this paper we introduce a way to use Coons surfaces for the automatic processing of building models in LoD2, and investigate ways to simplify LoD3 models in order to reduce unnecessary information for a numerical simulation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper examines the administrative and accounting reforms coordinated by Herman A. Metz around the turn of the 20th century in New York City. Reform efforts were motivated by deficiencies in administering New York City's finances, including a lack of internal control over monetary resources and operational activities, and opaque financial reports. The activities of Comptroller Metz, who collaborated with institutions such as the New York Bureau of Municipal Research, were paramount in initiating and implementing the administrative and accounting reforms in the city, which contributed to reform efforts across the country. Metz promoted the adoption of functional cost classifications for city departments, developed flowcharts for improved transaction processing, strengthened internal controls, and published the 1909 Manual of Accounting and Business Procedure of the City of New York, which laid the groundwork for transparent financial reports capable of providing vital information about the city's activities and subsidiary units. Abstract:
3D city models have become crucial for better city management, and can be used for various purposes such as disaster management, navigation, solar potential computation and planning simulations. 3D city models are not only visual models, and they can also be used for thematic queries and analyzes with the help of semantic data. The models can be produced using different data sources and methods. In this study, vector basemaps and large-format aerial images, which are regularly produced in accordance with the large scale map production regulations in Turkey, have been used to develop a workflow for semi-automatic 3D city model generation. The aim of this study is to propose a procedure for the production of 3D city models from existing aerial photogrammetric datasets without additional data acquisition efforts and/or costly manual editing. To prove the methodology, a 3D city model has been generated with semi-automatic methods at LoD2 (Level of Detail 2) of CityGML (City Geographic Markup Language) using the data of the study area over Cesme Town of Izmir Province, Turkey. The generated model is automatically textured and additional developments have been performed for 3D visualization of the model on the web. The problems encountered throughout the study and approaches to solve them are presented here. Consequently, the approach introduced in this study yields promising results for low-cost 3D city model production with the data at hand.

Abstract:
We replicated Bechhofer and Elliott's (1978) study of Edinburgh shopkeepers to answer two important questions. First, have political attitudes and behaviour changed since 1969–1970 when Bechhofer and Elliott collected their data? Second, are the Bechhofer and Elliott findings applicable only to the one city where their study was conducted? We collected our data in 1978 from the cities of Bradford and Leicester and the borough of Ealing, in grater London. Our replication supports Bechhofer and Elliott's findings in three of the four areas investigated. First, small shopkeepers are consistent Conservatives, although they are not terribly enthusiastic in their support. Second, shopkeepers are recruited from a wide range of social origins, especially from the lower non-manual strata and skilled manual workers. Third, small shopkeepers are highly individualistic politically, being strongly against big government and anti-union. Fourth, although Bechhofer and Elliott found that shopkeepers' optimistic beliefs in the possibilities of social promotion were apparently fulfilled in Edinburgh, such was not the case in Bradford. Ealing, or Leicester. The difference between our results and theirs may stem from differences in city economic structures.

Abstract:
In his Historia occidentalis, written in the 1220s after wide travels and varied experience, the Augustinian canon, bishop, and finally cardinal, Jacques de Vitry, described the recent and contemporary history of the West and in particular the many orders of both regular and secular persons in the Church, some of whom he had encountered in his journeying. He covered monks, canons, and secular religious, and it is an extensive list, including the Cistercians (male and female), the Carthusians, the Grandmontines, various hospital Orders, and new Orders such as the Valiscaulians, Trinitarians, Friars minor, Friars preacher, and the Humiliati of northern Italy. His text outlines the activities of the religious in these communities, giving us some sense of how such religious used their time. Manual labour was a long-established part of the regular life, and he naturally and frequently refers to it, the ‘labour of their hands’ of my title. Thus, according to Vitry, after daily chapter the Cistercians spent the rest of the day in manual labour, reading, and prayer; while the Valiscaulians had gardens, herbs, and orchards within their enclosure to which they went at set times ‘so that they might eat by the labour of their hands’, a direct allusion to Psalm 127.2: Thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be and it shall be well with thee.’ Premonstratensian canons likewise went out at fixed times ‘ad labores manuum’, and he describes the Humiliati as keeping sluggishness at bay by assiduous reading, prayer, and manual labour, by which they lived for the most part (‘ex magna parte’). By contrast, the canons of Bologna (as he calls the early Friars preacher or Dominicans) spent their days listening to Scripture, preaching, and working to save the souls of sinners from the jaws of the Leviathan (Job 40.20) through learning, so that they might ‘shine like perpetual stars in eternity’.

Abstract:
The paper aims to describe the population characteristics and the distribution patterns of slums in Palembang City. The research employs a quantitative method with 382 respondents. The data are analyzed using cross-tabulation of IBM SPSS 23 to know the population characteristics. Meanwhile, the distribution patterns of slums are analyzed by observing the sample distribution through the proportional random sampling technique. It is carried out by calculating the number of buildings of each area and noting the coordinates of each sample using GPS essentials application. The data are recorded and inserted into the sample spots on the map, which were then analyzed using the High-Low Clustering Report of Getis Ord General Gi*, to see the distribution pattern, especially the cold spot and hot spot, through ArcMap 103 program. The research found that non-migrant married Moslems dominate the population of Palembang city, with the average occupation is labor or manual worker. The slum distribution forms a low cluster pattern, meaning that it has a low value. The value is due to the government’s effort to manage the city and the development of the market sector, limiting the slum distribution. Getis Ord Gi* analysis revealed that the slum area in the city center and within a dense population is a cold spot (low cluster), while those far from the city center yet are still crowded are hot spots (high cluster).
