This paper examines how the Cooperative Extension System can be positioned as a collaborator in advancing manufacturing modernization in the USA. The authors consider whether the Cooperative Extension System has an interest in assisting manufacturers and, if so, what capacity it can bring that is complementary to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Technology Centers. They also assess whether there are sufficient parallel interests between the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership programme (in rural areas) and the Cooperative Extension System to warrant closer coordination and collaboration at the federal, state and local levels.

Abstract:
Manufacturing of heavy industrial components such as the front linkage, case frame and car body of construction and mining equipments involves multiple processes including thermal cutting, bending/forming and welding. Distortion, welding joint integrity and manufacturing variability pose significant challenges on today's manufacturing. In this paper, the authors presented VFT$^{\tiny TM}$- Virtual Fabrication Technology [1], a thru-process simulation package, developed at the technical center of Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL, USA and Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus Ohio, USA. VFT is a trademark of Battelle Memorial Institute. This work was performed under the support of the US Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards, Advanced Technology Program. Steel rolling simulation, thermal cutting simulation, bending and welding simulation capabilities in the VFT software have significantly reduced the time and cost of manufacturing process developments as well as to achieve competitive advantages through quality improvement and differentiated products. Besides the Caterpillar applications, VFT software has also found applications in shipbuilding, nuclear piping, and automotive industry.

Abstract:
Purpose. To analyze the impact of the knowledge component on the level of global competitiveness of the world. Methodology. The methodological basis of the article is the methods and forms of scientific knowledge adopted in domestic science, such as system approaches, comparative and synthesis methods, methods of abstract logical evaluation, methods of detailing, groupings and generalizations, experts evaluations; dynamics series, logic analysis, paired and multiple correlation techniques. Moreover, the Google Trends search engine was used, since the use of this search tool allowed drawing the following conclusions: searches for both concepts in the world and in Ukraine are substantially different: both concepts in the global space, particularly in countries with a high level of competitiveness, are hardly in demand. Findings. Knowledge as an economic category and practical skill permeates all spheres of human life. Currently, knowledge formation is concentrated within TNCs localized in the developed countries of the world (the USA, Singapore, the EU countries, Japan, and others), which is confirmed by the level of competitiveness of the economy of these countries and high ranking of the knowledge component in it. In the overall rating of competitiveness of the influence of the components of the knowledge economy, Ukraine ranks below average, while science now barely crosses the threshold of performing a sociocultural function and begins to perform a cognitive one. Originality. Globalization processes and technological revolution of recent decades have transformed knowledge and intellectual capital into key drivers of competitiveness in the world. We have formed and studied groups of subjective (regional and state policy, which determines the quality of economic and financial processes, as well as the management of the public sector) and objective (geographic, natural and climatic conditions, the degree of sufficiency in raw materials, infrastructure, and others) factors affecting competitiveness of countries. According to the research results, the use of this approach allows for continuous monitoring of the competitiveness level of social and economic indicators in order to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in various levels of state management. Practical value. The authors approach suggested is recommended to be used by scientific institutes, universities, government bodies and services for monitoring socio-economic indicators included in the groups of objective and subjective factors in order to form a holistic understanding and systematic analysis of the influence of the competitiveness of the knowledge component on different aspects of the countrys social and economic life.

Abstract:
Quality improvement (QI) approaches are becoming increasingly important in the delivery of mental healthcare internationally. They were originally developed in the manufacturing industry, but the principle of having a systematic approach to improvement has spread to many other industries, not least to healthcare. Quality improvement approaches in healthcare were pioneered in the USA at organisations such as Virginia Mason and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. In recent years, they have become firmly established in mental health services in the UK's National Health Service (NHS). There are a number of different approaches to quality improvement, but two leading models have taken root: ‘lean thinking’ (also known as ‘lean methodology’ or simply ‘lean’), which arose out of Virginia Mason, and the ‘Model for Improvement’, which came out of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement. This article describes these two quality improvement approaches, critiques their philosophy and explores how they can apply in the provision of mental healthcare, particularly with reference to the use of data, evidence and metrics.

Abstract:
Recently, a few computational methodologies and algorithms have been developed to simulate the microstructure evolution in powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) processes. However, none of these have attempted to simulate the grain structure evolution in multitrack, multilayer AM components in a fully 3D transient mode and for the entire AM geometry. In this work, a multiscale model, which consists of coupling a transient, discrete-source 3D AM process model with a 3D stochastic solidification structure model, was applied to quickly, efficiently, and accurately predict the grain structure evolution of IN625 alloys during Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). The capabilities of this model include studying the effects of process parameters and part geometry on solidification conditions and their impact on the grain structure formation within multicomponent alloy parts processed via AM. Validation was accomplished based on single-layer LPBF IN625 benchmark experiments, previously performed and analyzed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. This modeling approach can also be used to quantitatively predict the solidification structure of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in electron beam AM processes.

Abstract:
Abstract To limit global warming and mitigate climate change, the global economy needs to decarbonize and reduce emissions to net-zero by mid-century. The asymmetries of the global energy system necessitate the deployment of a suite of decarbonization technologies and an all-of-the-above approach to deliver the steep CO2-emissions reductions necessary. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies that capture CO2 from industrial and power-plant point sources as well as the ambient air and store them underground are largely seen as needed to address both the flow of emissions being released and the stock of CO2 already in the atmosphere. Despite the pressing need to commercialize the technologies, their large-scale deployment has been slow. Initial deployment, however, could lead to near-term cost reduction and technology proliferation, and lowering of the overall system cost of decarbonization. As of November 2019, more than half of global large-scale CCS facilities are in the USA, thanks to a history of sustained government support for the technologies. Recently, the USA has seen a raft of new developments on the policy and project side signaling a reinvigorated push to commercialize the technology. Analysing these recent developments using a policy-priorities framework for CCS commercialization developed by the Global CCS Institute, the paper assesses the USA’s position to lead large-scale deployment of CCS technologies to commercialization. It concludes that the USA is in a prime position due to the political economic characteristics of its energy economy, resource wealth and innovation-driven manufacturing sector.

Abstract:
Modern China should be considered as an unique experiment and great world project of human civilization, effectively a co-product of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the West. The centuries-old concept of a free-market economy fell on fertile ground of the hardworking Chinese people and in a short historical period since the beginning of the reform has finally bore fruit. Globalization and digitalization have greatly helped the Chinese economy to expand around the world and have become powerful catalysts for Chinese economic development, providing it with new approaches to doing business. The article attempts to analyze this phenomenon and systematize the factors of China’s growth. Key aspects of the Chinese economy transformation are studied, such as GDP (in current and constant prices) and GNI per capita, manufacturing and trade, finance and capital. Special attention is paid to the global leadership role of China or/and the USA: Economy, Manufacturing, and International Trade. An in-depth comparative analysis of the economic growth indicators for China and the USA is based on extensive international statistical data. The author focuses on estimates of key indicators published by international bodies, such as the United Nations, UNCTAD, UNIDO, OECD, WTO and others. Various think tanks, independent agencies and other institutions such as McKinsey Global Institute, Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations RAS, Congressional Research Service (CRS), United States–China Economic and Security Review Commission, Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) have been analyzing Chinese phenomenon of economic growth. Quantitative assessments of China’s economic growth are discussed. As shown, China plays a major role in the world economy and manufacturing. It is now the world’s first country by many economic indicators. In 2007, China became the world’s largest merchandise exporter. In 2009, it took the 1st place in manufacturing value-added output. Measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), in 2017 China stood as the world-largest economy in terms of GDP in current US dollars. Over the past decade, China has provided at least 30 percent of global GDP growth, while the United States was half as much. China is in the world’s top two for receiving and being the source of foreign direct investment (FDI). In 2020, China had 124 Global Fortune 500 companies compared to 121 American. At the same time, the US remains the world leader in many other quantitative indicators, for example in GDP at official exchange rates, innovation, research and development, finance, and services. It also ranks first in the world in terms of quality indicators of economic development. The author gives his vision of the China’s economic growth fundamental factors. Four of them are identified: a) low labor costs, b) well-designed legal environment for attracting foreign capital, c) massive FDI influx, d) imports of capital goods as well as modern Western technologies, including transfer of critical technologies, intellectual property and know-how (mainly through acquisition of Western firms). The general conclusion is that the reforms completely transformed the lives of Chinese people. China of the 1970s 80s and today’s China are two different economic, industrial, scientific, technical, socio-humanitarian entities.

Abstract:
The use of medical technologies has grown steadily in all health fields, offering numerous benefits to patients. However, related adverse events, which may cause severe consequences for patients, also have increased. Technical factors and human aspects that cause dangers to patients may be related to the complexity of the devices, quality control in manufacturing, software used, maintenance procedures, materials, and mode of use. Thereby, our objective is to present the main alerts, dangers, and failures related to medical equipment and ways to attenuate them. For that purpose, we performed an analysis of adverse events reported for medical equipment in the Food Drugs Administration (FDA/USA) and the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) databases, since 2016. Finally, we classified the events into different categories, according to similarity. The results show a total of 3,100 cases registered in the FDA for six types of equipment at the study and 75 cases in ANVISA for two of these equipment. Based on the top ten health hazards (2016-2020) provided by the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) we were able to understand which equipment most offers hazards and the main ways to mitigate them. We found that the risks are common to medical devices, therefore, it is crucial that there are preventative measures to avoid them, for example, training users to use the products, maintenance, improving quality, and reporting adverse events to manufacturers.

Abstract:
This article looks at the teaching aspects of virtual reality, as opposed to the use of virtual reality as a teaching tool (in virtual teaching environments). It is motivated by a perceived need for clarity, focus, and dialogue that are lacking within the VR community of developers, instructors, and end users. The market for visualization/3D computer graphics/simulations has seen a steady growth over the last decade. Yet, despite success stories in oil exploration, military training, car manufacturing, and other sectors, the VR curriculum has been fragmented and heterogeneous. The most longevity and success has been shown by programs that are designed to satisfy a societal need, such as the MOVES Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School (USA). The difficulty in adequately teaching VR may be related to the expense of setting up dedicated laboratories, and the lack of supporting textbooks in the 1990s. Yet such laboratories and books are key to gaining true understanding of the VR domain. An informal worldwide survey shows that only 3% of universities offer such courses, with half being in the USA. A listing of courses in Core (VR, VE technology) and Related (human factors, interface design, arts, architecture) areas is included in the Appendix. It is hoped that this article will spark a much-needed dialog within the VR community on ways to better teach VR to address societal needs.

Abstract:

The Portuguese Fab Labs are analyzed and a subsequent comparison with others European countries and in the USA was made. This comparison is based on aspects of the profile, the knowledge, the services, and the users. The survey was made by questionnaire, where the Portuguese version of it was adapted from another one disseminated at European level and in the USA, created in connection with a doctoral thesis in Italy. There are 25 active Fab Labs in Portugal, of which 16 responses were obtained and considered valid, so they represent the sample of our study. The results show that the Portuguese Fab Labs are in an embryonic phase with few associated or registered users. Portuguese Fab Labs have areas of work and investment capacity in machinery and technology similar to those of other European countries. However, in terms of turnover, there is a big difference between Portugal and some of the European countries, with American Fab Labs having completely different realities from the European ones. This work is relevant because it compares the Fab Labs of developed countries with those of Portugal. To overcome the difference in good practices existing in other countries, the Portuguese Fab Labs need: (1) better publicity, as well as more support for volunteer workers at Fab Labs, so that more ideas will appear and therefore more products; (2) the facilitation of the use of Fab Labs to have more volunteer workers, who must receive experimental courses, in order to make the best use of the available equipment; (3) evolution, from the current subtractive manufacturing to the additive manufacturing looking for innovation; (4) improved quality, ergonomics, and safety in the design of their own products; (5) and on the part of those responsible, therecognition, dissemination, and celebration of the best ideas that have turned into good products, in order to spread good practices.

Abstract:
Fused Filament Deposition (FDM) additive manufacturing technology allows the generation of three-dimensional parts by overlapping layers of an extruded polymer. The staircase effect caused by overlapping is well known and makes the manufactured parts have poor surface quality. This problem has been focused on by numerous works trying to optimize the surface quality by studying the process technological parameters or part geometry. Also, post-processing techniques have been developed that improve this roughness, but which involve an increase in manufacturing time and cost. In this work, a methodology to measure the roughness based on laser confocal microscopy is proposed. To evaluate the methodology, an experimental study is carried out that relates the surface roughness of parts manufactured with FDM with the building orientation and the layer height. The main objective of this study is to compare two roughness measurement methodologies: a mechanical measurement with a conventional contact roughness meter, and an optical measurement with a confocal microscope. The contact roughness meter provides a direct value of the roughness of the part wall profile, while the confocal microscope provides an image of the three-dimensional surface of the part wall, which must be processed. The data from the confocal microscope are evaluated with the Internet-based software Surface Metrology Algorithm Testing System (SMATS) developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the USA. The SMATS will provide an average value of the roughness of the analyzed surface. The test results with both methodologies are very similar, with an average difference of 5%. These results show the influence of the printed plane inclination angle on the roughness, which is higher for low values of the angle. It can also be seen that this influence decreases for low-layer heights.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Shadbush is one of the underutilized berry crops. Originally, it was an ornamental crop, but now it is increasingly used as a food crop. Numerous species of shadbush belong to the genus Amelanchier Medik.; wild species grow in North America, Europe, as well as in Western and Eastern Asia, and each region has different species composition. The year of 1590 marked the beginning of introduction of wild shadbush species with the most valuable features to other countries. In the 19th century, the introduction of shadbush became most popular. In 1800, shadbush breeding was launched in Canada, and then in the USA. In 1937, the production of commercial varieties was established. At present, in Russia, the most productive work on introduction and breeding of shadbush is carried out in Michurinsk (All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture named after I.V. Michurin), Novosibirsk (Central Siberian Botanical Garden of SB RAS), and Moscow (N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden). Unfortunately, the assortment of shadbush varieties in Russia is still quite limited and is represented by only two varieties. In recent years, the development of methods of shadbush clonal micropropagation has been underway, which makes it possible to obtain planting material on an industrial scale and accelerate the reproduction of rare varieties.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the 5 decades-plus since the first numerical control (NC) machine tool was demonstrated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, MA, USA, advances such as high-speed, multi-axis and multi-tasking machine tools have been introduced widely to achieve high quality and productivity in machining operations. In order to handle these sophisticated machine tools freely and effectively, sophisticated NC programs are conventionally required in advance for problem-free machining. Computer simulation and optimization of cutting processes by considering process physics, machine tool dynamics and kinematics and process constraints are helpful in the strategic process planning operation and useful in preparing sophisticated NC programs. However, challenges and models quantitatively predicting cutting process performance remain to be developed. Topics of interests in this special issue include but are not limited to - machining process modeling - machine tool dynamics modeling - cutting force, cutting temperature, surface roughness, etc., prediction - machining stability prediction - simulation-based machining-process diagnostics - optimization using machining simulation The review paper and ten research works accepted are related to state-of-the-art modeling and simulation applicable to the machining and manufacturing domains. Besides traditional machining, nontraditional machining such as laser machining for micromachining have been explored. Also the machining of calcium polyphosphate (CPP) for tissue engineering applications has been investigated. The articles in this special issue are sure to prove interesting, informative, and inspiring to our readers on advances in cutting process modeling and simulation. Abstract:
This paper reviews various engineering hurdles facing the field of quantum computing. Specifically, problems related to decoherence, state preparation, error correction, and implement ability of gates are considered. Computer computation is very advanced computers used in recent days for various applications, including cryptography, optimization problems, financial modelling, route and traffic optimization, manufacturing drug, chemical research, batteries, simulation of quantum systems, and even machine learning. In a quantum computer, two qubits can also represent the exact same four states (00,01,10 or 11). It’s an exciting field with lots of potential. But it faces lots of challenges and problems like maintaining qubits, interaction with the environment can cause decoherence. However, the adventure to harness the enormous power of quantum computer systems is packed with challenges and boundaries. In this discussion, we can embark on an exploration of the current boundaries that researchers and engineers face within the world of quantum computing, losing mild on the complexities and constraints that ought to be overcome to fully free up its ability. Reacher’s are working on error correction techniques to address this issue and make quantum computations more reliable. It’s fascinating area of ongoing research.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND Tisagenlecleucel is an FDA approved chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy that reprograms T cells to eliminate CD19+ B cells. ELIANA (NCT02435849) is a phase 2 pivotal study of tisagenlecleucel in pediatric/young adult patients (pts) with CD19+ r/r B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the first global trial of a CAR-T cell therapy. The primary objective was met, with an overall remission rate (ORR) of 81% (complete remission [CR] + CR with incomplete blood count recovery [CRi]). Here we present an update of ELIANA, with additional pts and additional 11 mo follow-up from the previous report (Maude et al. N Engl J Med 2018). METHODS Eligible pts were aged ≥3 y at screening and ≤21 y at diagnosis and had ≥5% leukemic blasts in bone marrow. Tisagenlecleucel was centrally manufactured at 2 sites (Morris Plains, NJ, USA and Leipzig, Germany) by lentiviral transduction of autologous T cells with a vector encoding for a second generation 4-1BB anti-CD19 CAR and expanded ex vivo. Tisagenlecleucel was provided to pts at 25 study centers in 11 countries on 4 continents using cryopreserved apheresed mononuclear cells, central production facilities, and a global supply chain. The primary endpoint, ORR within 3 mo and maintained for ≥28 d among infused pts, was assessed by an independent review committee. Secondary endpoints included duration of remission (DOR), overall survival (OS), safety, and cellular kinetics. RESULTS As of April 13, 2018, 113 pts were screened and 97 enrolled. There were 8 manufacturing failures (8%) and 10 pts (10%) were not infused due to death or adverse events (AEs). Following lymphodepleting chemotherapy in most pts (76/79; fludarabine/cyclophosphamide [n=75]), 79 pts were infused with a single dose of tisagenlecleucel (median dose, 3.0×106 [range, 0.2-5.4×106] CAR-positive viable T cells/kg), and all had ≥3 mo of follow-up or discontinued earlier (median time from infusion to data cutoff, 24 mo [range, 4.5-35 mo]). Median age was 11 y (range, 3-24 y); 61% of pts had prior hematopoietic stem cell transplant (SCT). Among the 65 pts with CR/CRi, 64 (98%) were MRD- within 3 mo. Median DOR by K-M analysis was not reached (Figure): responses were ongoing in 29 pts (max DOR, 29 mo and ongoing); 19 pts relapsed before receiving additional anticancer therapy (13 died subsequently); 8 pts underwent SCT while in remission, 8 received additional anticancer therapy (non-SCT) and 1 discontinued while in remission. The probability of relapse-free survival at 18 mo was 66% (95% CI, 52%-77%). Median OS was not reached; OS probability at 18 mo was 70% (95% CI, 58%-79%). Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) occurred in 77% of pts (grade [G] 3/4; 48%; graded using the Penn scale); 39% of pts received tocilizumab for treatment of CRS with or without other anti-cytokine therapies; 48% of pts required ICU-level care for CRS, with a median ICU stay of 7 d. All cases of CRS were reversible. Most common G 3/4 nonhematologic AEs (>15%) other than CRS were neutropenia with a body temperature >38.3°C (62% within 8 wk of infusion), hypoxia (20%), and hypotension (20%). 13% of pts experienced G 3 neurological events, with no G 4 events or cerebral edema. Based on laboratory results, 43% and 54% of pts had G 3/4 thrombocytopenia and neutropenia not resolved by d 28; the majority of events resolved to G ≤2 by 3 mo. 25 post-infusion deaths were reported: 2 within 30 d (1 disease progression, 1 cerebral hemorrhage); 23 after 30 d of infusion (range, 53-859 d; 18 disease progression, 1 each due to encephalitis, systemic mycosis, VOD [hepatobiliary disorders related to allogeneic-SCT], bacterial lung infection, and an unknown reason after study withdrawal). Tisagenlecleucel expansion in vivo correlated with CRS severity, and persistence of tisagenlecleucel along with B-cell aplasia in peripheral blood was observed for ≥2.5 y in some responding pts. Analysis of B-cell recovery and correlation with relapse will be presented. CONCLUSIONS With longer follow-up, the ELIANA study continues to confirm the efficacy of a single infusion of tisagenlecleucel in pediatric and young adults with ALL without additional therapy. AEs were effectively and reproducibly managed globally by appropriately trained personnel at study sites. The achievement of high overall response rates and deep remissions, in combination with the median duration of response and overall survival not being reached, further corroborate previously reported results. Abstract:
Relevance Over time, people's thinking begins to change. They perceive information differently, analyze it differently. As a result, they may have an incorrect or even rare manifestation of the process of any appearance or appearance. Today, written sources, various illustrations, and sometimes video materials are used for use. However, learning means not only the accumulation of knowledge, but also their awareness, embedding them in the mass of the student's already existing experience. If this happens, the requested book will not always be sufficient. When it comes to the fact that a person should not just learn something new, but master, comprehend and apply knowledge in practice, then it is impossible to use it without working out the study of the material on experience. Education based on computer games provides excellent opportunities for learning. Of course, in real life it is possible to simulate this or that situation in the field of application, but this is far from simple and requires quite a lot of time and material costs. In addition, simulating a whole system of situations or even a whole virtual world is a task just for computer games. The development of the educational process in educational institutions requires expectations, and at present there is the possibility of using computer-based learning systems. Training requires the development of high-tech computer applications using modern real-life technologies. As a result, high production processes and an increased understanding of high work skills have been achieved. For the user chose which control. Applications must correctly display the progress of the technological process, its parameters, as well as information in texts or audio format about the process and its elements. Abstract:
Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is a macromolecule supplement used in embryo and cell culture media. Other chemicals have been used as macromolecule substitutes in embryo culture with variable effectiveness. There are BSA products available that are defined in their disease status, collection method, and manufacturing process. They are compliant for use in raw form or in culture medium in the USA and EU. It was the purpose of this study to compare the effectiveness of highly defined and internationally compliant BSA with typically used BSA on in vitro-produced pig and cow embryo development. Pig oocyte-cumulus complexes were matured in two stages for 44 h in vitro. Semen from one boar of known high fertility was used across the study to fertilize mature oocytes. After 6-h co-incubation with sperm (50 motile sperm/oocyte), presumptive zygotes were cultured for 120 h in modified NCSU-23 containing 4 mg/mL of one of the following heat-shocked BSA fractions: Sigma A-7906 (control), Minitube Reproductive Biology Grade Fraction-V (RBG-V1, RBG-V2, RBG-V3), or Minitube Reproductive Biology Grade Fatty Acid-Free (RBG-FAF1). Across all treatments, Day 5 morulae were removed from BSA culture and placed into modified NCSU-23 with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) (no BSA) and cultured for 48 h. After 168-h total culture, the following blastocyst development was observed: Sigma A-7906, 12.3% (40/324); RBG-V1, 21.1% (36/171); RBG-V2, 19.0% (30/158); RBG-V3, 16.8% (27/161); and RBG-FAF1, 13.4% (21/157). These data show that culture medium supplemented with Minitube Reproductive Biology Grade BSA meets or exceeds (P < 0.05; ANOVA-GLM of SAS; SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, NC, USA) blastocyst development potential when compared to culture medium supplemented with undefined standard BSA preparations, such as Sigma A-7906. In vitro-matured cow cumulus-oocyte complexes were fertilized and cultured in one of two CR-1aa-based media. Oocytes were fertilized in IVF medium containing 6 mg/mL Sigma A-8806 (FAF) or 6 mg/mL Minitube RBG-FAF1. After 24 h in IVF medium, presumptive zygotes from a specific BSA-supplemented medium were cultured for 144 h in CR-1aa supplemented with their respective BSA (8 mg/mL). Day 6 morulae were removed from BSA culture and placed into CR-1aa with 10% FBS (no BSA) and cultured for 48 h. After 192-h total culture, the following blastocyst development from oocytes matured was observed: Sigma A-8806, 21.4% (88/411); RBG-FAF1, 18.9% (70/370). These data show that culture medium supplemented with Minitube Reproductive Biology Grade BSA meets blastocyst development potential (P > 0.05) when compared to culture medium supplemented with undefined standard BSA preparations, such as Sigma A-8806. The inclusion of internationally compliant BSA meets or exceeds blastocyst development rates in comparison to standard BSA preparations in common in vitro embryo production systems for swine and cattle. Although manufacturing differences remain the prominent variant in BSA sources and types, continued monitoring and documentation of BSA preparations tested in livestock in vitro embryo production systems will ensure a safe global supply of BSA products for future culture media production.

Abstract:
We begin the new issue of Perspectives on Culture with some very sad news. Dr. Urszula Tes, an outstanding film scholar, affiliated with the Institute of Cultural Studies at Ignatianum University in Krakow for many years, passed away unexpectedly on December 25, 2021. We were not prepared for her passing and we still find it difficult to come to terms with it. Not so long ago we talked with Ula about her idea of creating a permanent film studies section in Perspectives on Culture. Although we were unable to put this idea into motion, we would like to return to it in the near future and dedicate one of the issues of Perspectives on Culture to the memory of Dr. Urszula Tes and film topics so close to her heart.
