Abstract:
Process planning in manufacturing today focuses on optimizing the conflicting targets of cost, quality, and time. Due to increasing social awareness and subsequent governmental regulation, environmental impact becomes a fourth major aspect. Eventually, sustainability in manufacturing ensures future competitiveness. In this paper, a framework for the planning of sustainable manufacturing is proposed. It is based on the abstraction and generalization of manufacturing resources and part descriptions, which are matched and ranked using a multi-criteria decision analysis method. Manufacturing resources provide values for cost, quality, time and environmental impacts, which multiply with their usage within a manufacturing task for a specific part. The framework is validated with a detailed modeling of a laser machine as a resource revealing benefits and optimization potential of the underlying data model. Finally, the framework is applied to a use case of a flange part with two different manufacturing strategies, i.e., laser metal-wire deposition and conventional milling. The most influential parameters regarding the environmental impacts are the raw material input, the manufacturing energy consumption and the machine production itself. In general, the framework enabled the identification of non-predetermined manufacturing possibilities and the comprehensive comparison of production resources.

Abstract:
Production planning is a critical step for the implementation of sustainable production. It is necessary to consider energy and resource efficiency in all planning phases to promote sustainable production. In this paper, an approach for environmental impact assessment in all phases of process chain planning supported by process models is presented. The level of detail of the assessment is determined based on the level of detail of the planning phase. During the assessment, consumption of energy and resources is considered. This approach aims to align planning phases with the objective of sustainable production. In rough planning, the approach allows the selection of an ecologically favorable process chain. In detailed planning, process parameters can be selected based on their ecological sustainability. The approach can be integrated into the planning of process chains in order to consider ecological factors throughout all planning phases. The approach is evaluated by using an exemplary use case. The results indicate that rough planning under the consideration of uncertainties can form a reasonable prediction about resource efficiency for possible manufacturing routes. By systematically selecting a resource-efficient process chain, energy savings of up to 21% can be achieved for the presented use case.

Enterprises in Kosovo are marking significant development steps by launching quality products and services in the national, regional and international market. In this context, the role and importance of human resources is indisputable, and with it their planning. Reaching international agreements, certification of enterprises with quality standards and increasing purchasing power in Kosovo, is influencing Kosovar enterprises to produce more and more for the domestic market, but also for the international market by increasing exports. The growth trend of Kosovar manufacturing enterprises is positive and based on the current situation, this research conducted through the survey aims to bring information about human resource planning in manufacturing enterprises in Kosovo as an instrument to achieve their goals for next year, but also for the future in general. The results of this research will be able to serve enterprise managers, state decision makers and educational institutions to deepen cooperation with businesses for even deeper research that will serve you for the design of study curricula as well as for the development policies of enterprises and institutions for the future.

Objective – Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a technology that supports the management of supply chain activities. ERP consists of modules that have various operational and strategic functions. The more modules that are used, the higher the adoption rate is. This study aims to examine the adoption rate based on the modules used. Methodology/Technique – Manufacturing companies in Indonesia were selected as samples to answer the objective of this research and 155 respondents were obtained. The response from each respondent was categorised into two levels of adoption. The companies that adopted 1 to 4 modules were categorised as partial adopters, while companies that adopted five modules were considered to be full adopters. Findings & Novelty – This research found that 39 (25%) companies had fully adopted the ERP modules, 24 companies (15%) had adopted four modules, 29 companies (19%) adopted three modules, and 26 companies (17%) used two modules. Lastly, 37 companies (24%) used one module. Accordingly, the dominant choice is to partially adopt the technology. Type of Paper: Empirical. JEL Classification: O14, 032, O33. Abstract:
Organizational leaders have increasingly turned to enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications, also known as decision-support systems, to make their firms' operational, tactical, and strategic processes more efficient and effective in the changing global marketplace. High failure rates in ERP systems implementations make these projects risky, however. Most prior research on critical success factors for conventional ERP implementation has been on large enterprises, resulting in a gap in knowledge on these factors in the small and medium enterprises that constitute the majority of U.S. employer firms. A qualitative modified Delphi study with an expert panel of U.S. manufacturing consultants and 3 iterative rounds of data collection and analysis revealed consensus on 8 critical success factors in ERP implementations, with the highest agreement on top management support and commitment, enterprise resource planning fit with the organization, quality management, and a small internal team of the best employees. In addition to furthering knowledge in the fields of leadership and enterprise applications, the study expands enterprise resource planning experts' and scholars' understanding of strategies to improve project success and the triple bottom line for any size enterprise in the manufacturing industry. Practitioners in the ERP industry can also apply approaches outlined during ERP implementations to mitigate risk during these engagements. Implications for positive social change include additional job opportunities and higher wages through increased efficiencies in ERP applications.

The adoption of Enterprise Resource Planning tools has improved business processes in organisations. This increase has, however come with challenges for the small and medium business sector. First the adoption and deployment of proprietary ERP comes at great cost for organisations whilst it is also difficult for the organisations to ensure that scalability is introduced due to the dynamic change in the SME sector. The adoption and use of open source ERP tools then presents an opportunity for the SME sector. The usage of open source software has increased over the years. This increase has also extended to open source ERP tools. These tools offer the same functions as the proprietary at a fraction of the cost. Despite the benefits that open source ERP offers diffusion of this technology into the SME sector in South Africa has been minimal. This means the SME sector in South Africa is not benefiting from the widely available cost effective open source ERP available in the market. An opportunity therefore exists for them to utilise the technology to gain competitive advantage. The research was done primarily to determine the open source ERP adoption patterns of SMEs in the Vaal region. The research sought to determine the drivers for ERP adoption and barriers to adoption. Focus was specifically extended to investigating knowledge on open source alternatives. The results from the research indicate that the SMEs understand the benefits of adopting ERP for their businesses. The research further revealed that the adoption factors identified in the literature are still relevant in South Africa. The factors identified included costs, lack of training, lack of support, lack of knowledge and the lack of open source vendors. The empirical research also identified that the SME still harbour fear about open source ERP tools due to lack of training ,support and knowledge .From the study it is clear that a new approach needs to be taken to encourage adoption of open source ERP. These approaches include giving incentives to SMEs to adopt open source ERP. These incentives may be in the form of training packages and skills workshops to help overcome the barriers and improve implementation of open source ERP. The research identified the critical need for increased formal education and training in open source software development and emphasis on ERP tools. Government research bodies need to play a role in this area. For an example, there is need for SME and university collaborations in open source ERP deployment, whereby the latter needs to include software development tools in their curricula for SMEs so as to increase awareness. Clear–cut comparisons of existing proprietary systems against open source systems by focusing on functional and technological requirements need to be undertaken. This will help to reflect a cost benefit analysis as well as interoperability between the open source ERP and existing systems. During the adoption process, SME are encouraged to go through the full life cycle of open source ERP adoption. In this cycle the SME needs to do a thorough analysis regarding selection, implementation, integration, migration, training and evaluation of installed tools. That way they will gain the competitive advantage afforded by the tools.

AbstractIn recent years the manufacturing sectors are migrating from mass production to mass customization. To be able to achieve mass customization, manufacturing systems are expected to be more flexible to accommodate the different customizations. The industries which are using the traditional and dedicated manufacturing systems are expensive to realize this transition. One promising approach to achieve flexibility in their production is called Plug & Produce concept which can be realized using multi-agent-based controllers. In multi-agent systems, parts and resources are usually distributed logically, and they communicate with each other and act as autonomous agents to achieve the manufacturing goals. During the manufacturing process, an agent representing a robot can request a path for transportation from one location to another location. To address this transportation facility, this paper presents the result of a futuristic approach for an online path planning algorithm directly implemented as an agent in a multi-agent system. Here, the agent systems can generate collision-free paths automatically and autonomously. The parts and resources can be configured with a multi-agent system in the manufacturing process with minimal human intervention and production downtime, thereby achieving the customization and flexibility in the production process needed.

We provide a cloud manufacturing based manufacturing planning framework for small and medium-sized enterprises. Manufacturing planning is conducted by separate units in the cloud instead of in corporations or manufacturing platforms. Disorders can be removed by the adoption of our newly-introduced units. Abstract The problem under consideration is the modeling of manufacturing resources like machine tools, setups and tools which affect the cost and batch delivery time estimation of machined parts. The proposed resource models are built upon Petri net models for process planning and scheduling with three methods: (i) an implicit modeling method where resources are modeled as a data structure which acts on a specific Process Planning Petri net (PP-net), (ii) a first explicit modeling method where resources, are modeled as separated Petri nets whose places are connected to PP-net transitions with adequate arcs and form a Process Planning Cost System (PPC-system) and (iii) a second explicit modeling method where a two-level Petri net model is proposed which allows the modular modeling of process plans and resources. In the later case, integration is achieved through an synchronization mechanism. The first two methods are used for the cost estimation of process plans of unique parts while the third one is used for delivery time and cost estimation of a batch of machined parts.

A new approach to enacting processes “on the fly” by the participants is proposed for collaborative manufacturing. This approach allows the selection and planning of processes at a higher level as mutiple participants around the world can theoretically engage in planning the processes. Reconfigurable manufacturing system in such scenario means the selection of an appropriate sequence of processes, the process planning of the selected processes and the assignment of appropriate resources to carry out the processes. To achieve that, it requires a new method of representing, sharing and executing process information. In addition, the representation of organizations providing the services and their resources is the prerequisite to the problems we intend to resolve. Thus, rather than applying it to develop a new process planning, this paper proposes this system to connect, share, and reconfigure the network of manufacturing and design companies who are collaborating for a common project. Our system called MIDAS provides functionalities for the representation of processes including alternatives, the planning of resources and the execution of process. Moreover, MIDAS uses XML to encode the process grammar, constraints and other business, design and manufacturing logic, facilitating scalability required for large-scale collaboration.

The manufacturing of a product takes place in several partial steps and these mostly in different locations to save tax or to use the best providers. Therefore, in the era of Internet of Things (IoT) and modern Intelligent Production Environments (IPE) are going to be inevitably based on a cloud-based repository and distributed architecture to make data and information accessible everywhere as well as development processes and knowledge available for worldwide cooperation. Semantic approaches for knowledge representation and management as well as knowledge sharing, access, and re-use can support Collaborative Adaptive Production Process Planning (CAPP) in a flexible, efficient, and effective way. Thus, semantic representations of such CAPP knowledge integrated into a machine readable process formalization is a key enabling factor for sharing such knowledge in cloud-based knowledge repositories supporting CAPP scenarios as required for e.g., Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). When such contributors work together on a product component production planning, they exchange component production and manufacturing change information between different planning subsystems which require, e.g., a standardized product-feature- and production-machine feature representation. These data exchanges are mostly based on applying the already established Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (STEP) for the computer-interpretable representation and exchange of product manufacturing information. Furthermore, the planning process can be supported by so-called Function Block (FB) based knowledge representation models, serving as a high-level planning-process knowledge-resource template. Web-based and at the same time Cloud-based tool suites, which are based on process-oriented semantic knowledge-representation methodologies, such as Process-oriented Knowledge-based Innovation Management (German: Wissens-basiertes Prozess-orientiertes Innovations Management, WPIM) can satisfy the needs of representing such planning processes and their knowledge resources. In this way, WPIM can be used to support the integration and management of distributed CAPP knowledge, as well as its access and re-use in Manufacturing Change Management (MCM) including Assembly-, Logistics and Layout Planning (ALLP). Therefore, also a collaborative planning and optimization for mass production in a machine readable and integrated representation is possible. On the other hand, that knowledge can be shared within a cloud-based semantic knowledge repository. To integrate all these functionalities, this paper introduces a new method, called Knowledge-based Production Planning (KPP) and outlines the advantages of integrating CAPP with Collaborative Manufacturing Change Management (CMCM). In this way, an enabling basis for achieving ALLP interoperability in Distributed Collaborative Manufacturing and Logistics will be demonstrated.

Determining the most appropriate means of producing a given product, i.e., which manufacturing and assembly tasks need to be performed in which order and how, is termed process planning. In process planning, abstract manufacturing tasks in a process recipe are matched to available manufacturing resources, e.g., CNC machines and robots, to give an executable process plan. A process plan controller then delegates each operation in the plan to specific manufacturing resources. In this paper we present an approach to the automated computation of process plans and process plan controllers. We extend previous work to support both non-deterministic (i.e., partially controllable) resources, and to allow operations to be performed in parallel on the same part. We show how implicit fairness assumptions can be captured in this setting, and how this impacts the definition of process plans.

In recent years, Web related technology improves greatly the abilities to communicate and cooperate, The web technology enables the manufacturing resources, including information, facilities and so on, to be shared among geographically distributed partners. The significance of web technology to agile manufacturing is unquestionable. In this paper we develop a prototyping system to explore methodology of enhancing agility by use of Web based technology. A web-based micro-process planning system for turning has been developed. The engineers who are connected to the Internet at geographically distributed sites can use a standard browser to realize process parameter planning and optimization.

Abstract Industrial sector for production of manufacturing machinery and equipment is a very competitive and difficult market to deal with. Difficulties increase in areas that involves the design, manufacturing and assembly of large production machines. In fact, in this case the effort to produce a single item is much bigger in time, money and resources with respect to other areas. Long time for production paired with a not accurate usage of internal resources can produce a large number of unused components and semi-finished products. This paper presents a real case study of a company leader in the designing and manufacturing machinery for disposable hygienic products and highly automated liquid filling integrated systems. Each product is a huge assembly of components and semi-finished products and many of them are not used for production even if they are stored in company’s warehouses. This is due to the logistic and human factors that can be managed and corrected. In this paper a math-heuristic approach for warehouse resources and components procurement optimization is presented. A real instance related to a commission has been solved and results are presented and analyzed.
