Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.

Abstract:
Decipherment is the tool used to uncover several types of hand signs that played vital roles in the creation of hidden messages in classic artwork. A 3,100 B.C. bas-relief of The 'Kaph' Telescope, formerly named The Narmer Palette, and Michaelangelo Buonarrotte's Battle of Cascina of 1506 were two key works of art that show certain similarities even though separated by 4,500 years. It is evident that Renaissance humanists provided artists with certain knowledge of the ancients. Results of incorporating a number of minor works of art showed that the competence of ancient Egyptians, Cretans and Australian Aboriginals, to name a few, as astronomers, was underestimated. Some deciphered Indus seals attested to a global understanding of the universe, with Gemini and the star of Thuban at the center of their attention. Certain forms of secrecy had to be undertaken for various reasons throughout the millennia. Three examples are: (1) In Italy, to keep controversial and truthful teachings discreet and hidden, artists embedded them in artwork long before the plight of Galileo Galilei and his discoveries. (2) Among Jewish Kabbalists, a well-known design was obscured in The Arnolfini Wedding painting for fear it would be lost due to persecution. (3) Michaelangelo Buonarrotte indicated several meanings through the hands of The Statue of Moses. They were overlooked by several societies, including the gesticulating culture of Italy, because they oppressed the value of signed languages. Spatial decipherment may testify to a need for the restoration of a spatial writing system for expanded linguistic accessibility. A 21st century model community for sign language residents and employees will benefit visual learners, particularly visual artists and non-phonetic decipherers, to better uncover, understand and perhaps use ancient hand forms to restore ancient knowledge. Moreover, the National Association of Teaching English (NATE) has recently endorsed the addition of two skills, viewing and visual representing, to the traditional list of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will master these two new skills far more effectively when they are exposed to such a signing community.

This thesis studies the restoration and preservation of Works of Art, with focus on the volume 112 from the Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas collection, entitled Restauração de Quadros e Gravuras, which was written by Manuel de Macedo and published in 1885. The collection aimed to compile curiosities and interests in studies, raising the interest in Reading. The volumes were written in ways that nonintelectuals could make use of its content. The volume selected for analysis shines a light on the value and preservation of monuments and precious artefacts found in the ancient art , as the author states in the Preface. This manual raises questions like Originality, forgery, conservation and restoration procedures, used materials, techniques of paintings and prints, that up to today are still subject of discussion, without cleared and difined standards. The research arises in the history of Science interface and technical studies on conservation and restoration in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which marked the beginning of the practical and theoretical discussions on the preservation of historical heritage
O estudo realizado nesta dissertação a respeito da restauração e da conservação foca o volume 112 da coleção Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas, intitulado Restauração de Quadros e Gravuras, o qual foi escrito por Manuel de Macedo e publicado em 1885. Essa coleção tinha como propósito suprir curiosidades e interesses em estudos e incentivar a leitura, sendo preparada de modo que o leigo pudesse usufruir do conteúdo. O volume selecionado para análise é destinado a tratar do valor e da conservação dos monumentos e artefatos preciosos da arte antiga , como diz o autor no prefácio. Esse manual traz questões como originalidade, falsificação, os procedimentos de conservação e restauração, tipos de materiais utilizados, técnicas de pintura e gravura, que ainda hoje são aspectos em discussão, os quais não possuem parâmetros totalmente definidos. Nossa pesquisa se coloca na interface da história da ciência e da técnica com estudos sobre conservação e restauro nos séculos XVIII e XIX, marcados pelo início das discussões práticas e teóricas sobre a preservação do patrimônio histórico

Abstract:
This work addresses the nationalistic elements in the 1570 work Kunst des Fechtens by Joachim Meyer of Strassburg. Meyer's teachings on the longsword are attached to the Swabian Johannes Liechtenauer and then transferred to the Italian rapier thus establishing Meyer as less concerned with nationalist purity as others of his century. His teachings are examined for their pleadings for moral conduct and the preservation of martial studies to the youth of Germany and the young Duke of Bavaria, Johann Casimir. Using modern examples alongside Meyer's writings the case is also made for the integration of nationalist sentiments, moral and ethical instruction, and martial arts training.

Resumo: Na análise histórica da condição social do trabalho manual no período colonial, depreende-se alguns aspectos que se apresentam em aberto neste debate historiográfico. São eles o problema da terminologia e da categorização empregadas para designar esses trabalhadores, a questão da mecanização e da especialização do trabalho manual, e os referenciais interpretativos na perspectiva da História da Educação e da História Social. Entendemos que a essencialidade desse debate, que se quer apresentar neste trabalho, é a sua natureza fragmentada e não sistematizada. No cerne deste debate estão dois autores expoentes da História da Educação com suas premissas sobre o ensino de ofícios, a do "abastardamento do ensino de ofícios" apontado por Celso Suckow da Fonseca, e a do "aviltamento do trabalho manual" por Luiz Antônio Cunha, o que teria depreciado, enormemente, no mundo ibérico e luso-brasileiro, a formação de todo e qualquer trabalho para o qual concorresse o emprego das mãos. A formação para o trabalho manual se apresentou como um problema e desafio a serem enfrentados ao longo de toda história colonial. As ordens religiosas que se estabeleceram no Brasil, no século XVI, trataram de resolver o problema da escassez da mão de obra, através do aprendizado na prática. Dentre essas ordens destacamos os jesuítas, que souberam se adaptar a essa realidade social. O problema da formação profissional regular na colônia era o de eliminar, primeiramente, a longa distância entre as artes liberais e as artes mecânicas, e entre as belas artes e as artes aplicadas. Esse problema chegou a ser enfrentado nos mais diversos contextos históricos sem que tenha havido êxito pleno - no período jesuítico com o Plano de Estudos do Pe. Manoel da Nóbrega (1553), no período pombalino com o Plano Profissional e com as Reformas da Instrução Pública (1759/1772), e no período joanino com o Plano de Ensino Artístico de Joachim Lebreton (1816), que incluía, também, os ofícios, visando o benefício para o desenvolvimento da indústria, no entanto, todos esses intentos pedagógicos permaneceram mais como propostas retóricas e curriculares, não cumprindo o papel de sanar o problema premente da formação para o trabalho manual.
Abstract: In the historical analysis of the social status of manual labor in the colonial period, it appears that some aspects are still in the open to be presented in this historiographical debate. They are the problem of terminology and categorization used to designate those employees, the issue of mechanization and specialization of manual work, and the interpretative references under the perspective of History of Education and Social History. We understand that the essence of the debate, which wants to be presented in this work is its fragmented nature and not systematic. At the heart of this debate are two authors exponents of the History of Education with their assumptions about the teaching of crafts, the "marginalization of teaching crafts" appointed by Celso Suckow da Fonseca, and the "degradation of manual labor" by Luiz Antonio Cunha which would have depreciated tremendously in the iberian and luso-brazilian world, the formation of any work for which the use of the hands were required. The training of manual work presented itself as a problem and challenge to be faced throughout the entire colonial history. The religious orders who settled in Brazil in the sixteenth century tried to solve the problem of labor shortage with daily learning practise. Among these orders were highlighted the Jesuits, who knew how to adapt to this social reality. The problem of regular manual training in the colony, was to eliminate, first, the long distance between the liberal arts and mechanical arts, and between fine arts and applied arts. This problem came to be faced in various historical contexts which have not been fully successful -under the: Jesuit's period with the syllabus of the priest Manoel da Nobrega (1553), Marquis of Pombal's administration with the Professional Plan and the Reform of Public Instruction (1759/1772), and the kingdom of João VI with the Plan of Artistic Teaching Joachim Lebreton (1816), which included, too, crafts, for the benefit of the industrial development, however, all such attempts remained more as pedagogical rhetoric and proposed curriculum, not fulfilling the role of rectifying the pressing problem of training for manual labor.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa inscreve-se na perspectiva materialista da HIL e mobiliza o dispositivo teórico-analítico da AD, a partir do qual me coloquei frente ao empreendimento de compreender o modo pelo qual os manuais de redação de uma empresa jornalística, em meu caso, a Folha, se configurariam enquanto um instrumento tecnológico do espaço discursivo do jornalismo (hipótese com a qual passei a trabalhar), que pauta a escrita jornalística que, por sua vez, inscreve-se na produção de conhecimento sobre a história da língua e a história do conhecimento sobre a língua, funcionando como um instrumento linguístico. Além disso, trabalho com a compreensão de que a constituição da instituição 'jornal' se dá em uma relação com um 'poder dizer' (MARIANI, 1999), instaurando uma memória discursiva no funcionamento da instituição jornalística. Meu dispositivo teórico repousa nas noções correntes da AD, mais propriamente, naquelas postuladas por Pêcheux, Henry, Guilhaumou, Maldidier, Orlandi e, recorro a Mariani, Silva, Pfeiffer e Silva para tangenciar as questões relativas ao discurso jornalístico. Compreendo em minha pesquisa as condições de produção das versões dos manuais de redação da Folha, bem como o processo de institucionalização do Grupo. Além, de ter buscado apresentar algumas considerações acerca desse instrumento tecnológico, o manual. Pensar o discurso jornalístico impõe que pense-se também uma questão de memória, um já dito que constitui todo o dizer; nos manuais, noto um trabalho de atualização de enunciados, num movimento que o constitui enquanto pertinente aos meandros do jornalismo e enquanto um recorte da língua, que possibilita a produção de textos que se coloquem no lugar do bem-dizer. Considerando os efeitos de sentido observados em minha pesquisa, compreendo que o manual sustenta um imaginário de referência de língua tanto para o jornalismo, quanto para a escola, que cada vez mais se apropria dos textos midiáticos
Abstract: This research is subscribed in the materialist perspective of LIH and mobilizes the theoretical and analytical device of DA, from which I put forward the enterprise to understand the way the writing manual of a journalistic company, in my case, the Folha, would configure it as a technological tool of the discursive space of journalism (hypothesis with which I have worked), which guides the journalistic writing that, in turn, is part of the production of knowledge about the history of language and history of knowledge about language, functioning as a linguistic instrument. Moreover, I deal with the comprehension that the establishment of the journalistic institution occurs in relation to 'what can be said' (MARIANI, 1999), establishing a discursive memory as for the operation of the institution. My theoretical device is based on the current concepts of DA, more properly, those postulated by Pecheux, Henry, Guilhaumou, Maldidier, Orlandi, and I have relied on Mariani, Silva, Pfeiffer and Silva to discuss the issues related to journalistic discourse. I try to show my understanding on the production conditions of the four versions of Folha writing manual, as well as the institutionalization of the Group. In addition to that, we sought to present some considerations about this technological tool, the manual. Thinking about media discourse also requires thinking about a memory question, something that has already been said and ends up composing all the saying; as for the manuals, I have noticed utterances update work, set out in a movement that is so relevant to the intricacies of journalism, that makes it possible the production of texts whose meaning is built over a 'well-saying' position. Considering the meaning effects found in my study, I understand that the writing manual claims an imaginary effect of language reference both to journalism, and for the school, which increasingly takes media texts into its practice

Esta pesquisa, de cunho teórico e bibliográfico, teve por objetivo realizar uma análise crítica do livro Psicologia Social (1935) de Raul Briquet. A Psicologia Social brasileira encontra a sua origem nas teses de doutoramento defendidas nas Faculdades de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro e da Bahia, tendo como um de seus principais pioneiros o médico Raul Carlos Briquet, que publicou o primeiro manual brasileiro sobre Psicologia Social em 1935. O método utilizado foi o materialismo histórico e dialético, a partir da análise das principais categorias e tendências presentes na estrutura e no conteúdo do livro. As mediações de sua obra residem tanto nas teorias com base no Positivismo e no Evolucionismo do século XIX - sobretudo nas idéias do Pensamento Social Brasileiro quanto nas concepções liberais defendidas pela elite brasileira da década de 1930, expressa através de importantes documentos tais como o Manifesto dos Pioneiros da Educação Nova e o Manifesto da Escola Livre de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo (1933) que, dentre os signatários, estava Briquet. A análise crítica apresentou, primeiramente, um panorama geral da estrutura e conteúdo do livro, expondo em seguida suas principais categorias (indivíduo;sociedade; relação indivíduo-sociedade;ciência;educação;psicologia social) e tendências (cientificismo/organicismo; normatização; orientação programática para a ciência; evolucionismo/higienismo; aproximação à realidade cotidiana; crítica radical) segundo suas mediações internas e externas; para tanto, partiu das categorias de análise da dialética como mediação, contradição e totalidade. Deste modo, foi possível compreender o primeiro manual brasileiro sobre Psicologia Social sob duplo aspecto: primeiro, como um manual que respondia ao movimento de institucionalização da psicologia social como disciplina autônoma e estruturado a partir de uma bibliografia contemporânea às principais pesquisas da época; segundo, como resultado do amplo contexto histórico do entre-guerras, somado ao jogo de forças políticas que compuseram a Era Vargas a partir dos desdobramentos de sua política de conciliação de classes e da chamada modernização conservadora
This theoretical and bibliographical research aimed to conduct a critical analysis of Raul Briquet´s Social Psychology (1935) book. The brazilian social psychology finds its origin in the doctoral degree theses in the Medical Schools of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, having as one of its leading pioneers the doctor Raul Carlos Briquet, who published the first brazilian handbook social psychology in 1935. The method used was the historical and dialectical materialism, from the analysis of the main present categories and trends in the structure and content of the book. The mediations of his work resides in theories based on positivism and evolutionism of the nineteenth century - especially the ideas of the Brazilian Social Thought - as the liberal conceptions defended by the brazilian elite of the 1930s, expressed through important documents such as the Manifesto of Pioneers of New Education and the Manifesto of Free School of Sociology and Policy, that among the signatories was Briquet. The critical analysis presented, first, an overview of the structure and content of the book, then exposing its main categories (individual, society, individual-society relation, science, education, social psychology) and trends (scientism/organicism, the programmatic orientation toward science, evolutionism/hygienism, approach to daily reality, radical critique) according to their internal and external mediations; to do so, started by the dialectical analysis of categories such as mediation, contradiction and totality. Thus, it was possible to understand the first brazilian handbook of social psychology into two ways: first, as a manual that responded to institutionalization movement in social psychology as an autonomous discipline and structured from contemporary literature to the main research of the time; second, as a result of the broad historical context of the interwar, added to the political forces struggle that formed the Vargas Era from the consequences of their class conciliation politic and the nominated \"conservative modernization

La audiodescripción (AD) hace que las imágenes visuales del teatro, medios de comunicación y el arte visual sean accesibles para las personas ciegas o con baja visión. Con el uso de palabras que sean sucintas, vivas, e imaginativas (a través de la utilización de símiles o comparaciones), los descriptores transmiten la imagen visual que es inaccesible o sólo parcialmente accesible a una parte significativa de la población. En cierto modo, dicha técnica de acceso / forma de traducción audiovisual que tiene más de 30 años como práctica formal o área de investigación, ha hecho un gran progreso. El caso más notable es el del Reino Unido, donde existe una regulación (aunque relativamente modesta) para la descripción de la televisión abierta y donde además se han realizado importantes avances en el desarrollo del estado de la técnica, para los medios de comunicación, en varios eventos (incluyendo eventos deportivos), y para exposiciones. Pero en cuanto a la práctica real de la audiodescripción, otros países están dejados atrás, entre ellos mí propio país, los Estados Unidos, el lugar de nacimiento de la técnica. Es de destacar también que prácticamente toda la investigación en este campo se origina en Europa, donde la descripción está considerada como una forma de traducción y aparte se estudia como tal. Una encuesta informal de los programas de posgrado estadounidenses revela que no hay instituciones para estudios avanzados sobre la audiodescripción. Actualmente no hay ningún manual de formación integral, públicamente disponible para la práctica de la audiodescripción en el rango de géneros o formatos para los cuales puede ser eficaz, tampoco una guía para la formación de formadores. Esto se relaciona directamente con la investigación que he estado realizando en normas de descripción en su estado actual (lo que constituye la descripción de la calidad y cómo puede ser mejor enseñada). Además, existe poca precisión cuando se "describa" la historia del desarrollo de la audiodescripción. Además, tengo un interés especial en determinados ámbitos: ¿como la descripción puede afectar la alfabetización?, ¿qué tiene en común la audiodescripción para el funcionamiento de la danza con el análisis del movimiento? Además, la imagen visual con frecuencia no se realiza plenamente por las personas que ven, sino también por las que no pueden observar. La descripción también puede beneficiar a las personas que prefieren adquirir la información principalmente a través del canal auditivo y ellas que están limitadas, por ejemplo por la proximidad o la tecnología, para acceder al audio de un evento o de una producción. Mientras la descripción fue desarrollada para las personas ciegas o con discapacidad visual, muchas otras también pueden beneficiarse de la naturaleza concisa de la descripción y la "traducción" objetiva que ella ofrece de los componentes visuales que son claves de diversos géneros artísticos y entornos sociales. Esta tesis y el libro se basan en mi aplicación práctica de técnicas de descripción de audio que he desarrollado durante los últimos 32 años de trabajo profesional en el campo y en casi todos los formatos en los que se practica la audiodescripción: artes escénicas (teatro, danza, ópera), los medios de comunicación (televisión, cine, DVD, web streaming), los museos / centros de visitantes, y en otras actividades culturales o recreativas (desfiles, eventos deportivos, visitas personales, comerciales, cruceros y concursos de karaoke). Por lo tanto, esta tesis está redactada con el fin de transmitir mi experiencia en todos los formatos y mecanismos de la audiodescripción y permite una revisión de cómo la descripción se aplica a la observación y el análisis del movimiento y su aplicación en el desarrollo de la alfabetización. Su corpus es un manual de formación integral y guía a la historia y aplicaciones de la Audio Descripción. Una característica especial es el "sitio web asociado" de la tesis: www.thevisualmadeverbal.com que está disponible para todos los lectores de esta tesis y ofrece practica para los estudiantes de descripción. El corpus se publicará por acuerdo previo con el Consejo Americano de Ciegos de Arlington, Virginia en los Estados Unidos de América.
Audio Description (AD) makes the visual images of theater, media and visual art accessible for people who are blind or have low vision. Using words that are succinct, vivid, and imaginative (via the use of similes or comparisons), describers convey the visual image that is either inaccessible or only partially accessible to a significant segment of the population. In some ways, for an access technique/form of audiovisual translation that is over 30 years old as a formal practice or area of inquiry, a great deal of progress has been made. Most notably in the U.K., where a mandate exists (albeit relatively modest) for description on broadcast television, significant strides have been made in developing the state of this art, for media, in performance (including sporting engagements), and for exhibitions. But as far as the actual practice of audio description, other countries fall far behind, including my own United States, the birthplace of the technique. It is noteworthy too that practically all research in this field originates in Europe where description is considered a form of translation and studied as such. An informal survey of American graduate programs reveals no “homes” for advance study of audio description. There is currently no comprehensive, publically-available training manual for the practice of audio description in the range of genres or formats for which description can be effective--or a guide for the training of trainers. This relates directly to research I have been conducting on description standards as they currently exist (what constitutes quality description and how can it best be taught). In addition, little exists that accurately “describes” the history of audio description’s development. Further, I have a special interest in certain areas: can description affect literacy?; what does audio description for dance performance have in common with movement analysis? In addition, the visual image is often not fully realized by people who see, but who may not observe. Description may also benefit people who prefer to acquire information primarily by auditory means and those who are limited—by proximity or technology, for instance—to accessing audio of an event or production. While description was developed for people who are blind or visually impaired, many others may also benefit from description’s concise, objective ‘translation’ of the key visual components of various art genres and social settings. This dissertation and book is grounded in my practical application of audio description techniques which I developed over the last 32 years of professional work in the field and in virtually all formats in which audio description is practiced: performing arts (theater, dance, opera), media (television, film, DVDs, web streaming), museums/visitor centers, and in other cultural or recreational endeavors (parades, sporting events, personal tours, shopping, on cruise ships—and karaoke competitions). Thus, this dissertation is structured so as to convey my experience in all audio description formats and mechanisms and a review how description applies to the observation and analysis of movement and its application to the development of literacy. Its corpus is a comprehensive training manual and guide to the history and applications of Audio Description. A special feature is the dissertation’s “associated web site”: www.thevisualmadeverbal.com which is available to all readers of this dissertation and provides practica for students of description. The corpus will be published by prior arrangement with the American Council of the Blind based in Arlington, VA in the United States of America.

This thesis has the aim to describe and analyze the José Oiticica s Lexical and Syntactic Manual Analysis work. For this work we examined all the twelve editions and we certified that the first four ones remained similar in the linguistic aspects. From the fifth one, there was partial a redoing of the work, fact that was kept to the twelfth edition (1958), this was the reason we chose to compare the first (1919) and the fifth (1940) in order to point the permanence and the changes ocurred among the versions. We observed that the second, third and fourfh editions had some improvements , adding morphosis, flexons, root and radical on the second edition definitions, the junction of the two paragraphs in one just and the adding of an erratum on the second edition. These modifications that ocurred from the second to the fourth one don t mean that the volumes were modifyed on the contents; From the fifth edition the redoing of the work was done, like the figure alteration , reason which we were taken to compare the version of 1919 and 1940. We also point the motive of the Manual prodution and for those who it was destined. To develop this research, it was necessary to survey the historical situation of Brazil in the First Republic and the facts that became fundamental on the nation development so idealized by the republicans and, subsequent to challenged, by the anarchists. Some aspects of José Oiticica s life will be approached from the cultural and social spaces were he passed by, about the job that he did as an educator, journalist and writer, about the works produced by him, the turmoils that he suffered due to his engagement with the anarchist ideal. For this we will use as theoretic apparatus the linguistic Ideas History (Auroux, Fávero and Orlandi), in order to seize in the chosen subject - the José Oiticica s Manual - , how and what shape he and the environment are linked in a cause and effect relationship
Esta tese tem como objetivo descrever e analisar a obra Manual de Análise Léxica e Sintática, de José Oiticica. Para tal fim, examinamos as doze edições e constatamos que as quatro primeiras permaneceram idênticas nos aspectos linguísticos. A partir da quinta, houve um refazimento parcial da obra, fato que se manteve até a décima segunda edição (1958), motivo pelo qual escolhemos cotejar a primeira (1919) e a quinta edição (1940) a fim de apontar a permanência e as mudanças ocorridas entre as versões. Observamos que a segunda, a terceira e a quarta edição foram melhoradas com o acréscimo dos conceitos de morfose, flexões, raiz e radical nas definições preliminares da segunda edição, a junção de dois parágrafos em um só e o aditamento de uma errata na 2ª edição. Essas alterações que ocorreram a partir da segunda até a quarta versão não significam que os volumes sofreram modificações no conteúdo; já a partir da quinta, registrou-se o refazimento da obra, como as modificações de quadros , motivo que nos levou a colacionar a versão de 1919 e a de 1940. Também apontamos o porquê da produção do Manual e a quem se destinava. Para desenvolver esta pesquisa, foi necessário fazer um levantamento histórico de como era o Brasil na Primeira República e dos fatos que se tornaram fundamentais na construção da nação tão idealizada pelos republicanos e, posteriormente, contestada pelos anarquistas. Abordar-se-ão, também, aspectos da vida de José Oiticica, dos espaços sociais e culturais por onde transitou, do trabalho que realizou como educador, jornalista e escritor, das obras que produziu e dos problemas que sofreu devido ao seu envolvimento com o ideário anarquista. Este trabalho investiga o processo de construção histórica do discurso visual da notícia, com especial atenção para as rupturas e regularidades associadas as esferas da teoria e da prática da fotografia de imprensa. Sobre tais reconfigurações, buscamos observar de que forma a atividade fotojornalística e, consequentemente, suas cadeias de produção, edição e circulação de conteúdo, vêm absorvendo algumas dessas mudanças, as quais assinalam para “novos contextos” tanto em nível processual (gestão de processos) como no que se relaciona ao nível procedimental (técnico) da atividade. Para isso, buscamos estabelecer um processo classificatório para as características direcionadas ao fotojornalismo que se concentrassem em três grandes esferas (ou dimensões): a dimensão técnica (relacionada à questões de rotina), a dimensão estética (atrelada a ideia de codificação da atividade) e a dimensão deontológica. Tal escolha foi norteada pela necessidade de agrupar particularidades que representassem importantes subatividades articuladas à atividade fotojornalística. Ademais, podemos destacar entre os objetivos apontados para esta tese a identifcação, por meio de uma análise diacrônica de 15 manuais de fotojornalismo, do processo de construção das orientações alusivas às dimensões técnica, estética e deontológica da atividade. Tal análise evolutiva das orientações sobre tais as dimensões, através de seus manuais, apresenta uma abordagem investigativa que aponta para zonas de tensão / “transições de status” (ou, segundo Foucault (1987), fenômeno de ruptura) nos campos da produção, edição e circulação das imagens voltadas para a imprensa. Essa perspectiva oferece um novo olhar sobre a história evolutiva dos processos que compõem as esferas teórica e prática do fotojornalismo. Partindo dessas considerações, estabelecemos três hipóteses principais para o trabalho: a primeira hipótese aborda os manuais de fotojornalismo sob uma perspectiva que permite a identificação de regularidades, acumulações e rupturas nas dimensões técnica, estética e deontológica A segunda hipótese postulada adverte que as regularidades, acumulações e rupturas aqui específicas permitemnos ressaltar para consolidação de um campo (Bordieu, 2003) para o fotojornalismo. Por fim, a terceira hipótese trabalhada nesse material indica o surgimento de um sujeito-autor na cadeia fotojornalística: o manulista.
This work investigates the historical construction process of the visual news speech, with special attention to the ruptures and regularities associated with the sphere of theory and practice of press photography. On such reconfigurations, we observed how the photojournalistic activity and, consequently, their chains of production, editing and circulation of content, have been absorbing some of these changes, which indicates for "new contexts" both in procedural level (process management) as in what relates to the technical level of activity. For this, we have established a classification process for the features related to photojournalism which to focus on three major spheres (or dimensions): the technical dimension (related to routine issues), the aesthetic dimension (linked the idea of codification of activity) and the ethical dimension. This choice was guided by the need to group characteristics that represent major sub-activities articulated to photojournalistic activity. Moreover, we can stand out among the objectives apointed for this thesis the identifcation, through a diachronic analysis of 15 manuals of photojournalism, of the construction process of allusive guidelines for technical, aesthetic and ethical activity. This evolutionary analysis of guidelines on such dimensions, through its guides, presents an investigative approach that points to areas of tension / "status transitions" (or, according to Foucault (1987), breaking phenomenon) in the fields of production, editing and circulation of images aimed at the press. This perspective offers a new look at the evolutionary history of the processes that make up the theoretical and practical spheres of photojournalism. Based on these considerations, we have established three hipothesis for our thesis: the first hypothesis presents the photojournalism manuals from a perspective that allows the identification of regularities, accumulations and ruptures in the technical, aesthetic and deotological The second hypothesis postulated warns that the regularities, accumulations and specific breaks allow us to emphasize consolidation of a field (Bourdieu 2003) for photojournalism. Finally, the third hypothesis worked in this material indicates the emergence of a subject-author in photojournalistic chain: the "manualista".

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar o ensino de História nas escolas primárias do Pará, nas primeiras décadas do século XX, considerando as representações veiculadas nos manuais didáticos Apostilas de História do Pará (1915), de Theodoro Braga, e Noções de História Pátria (1920), de Silvio Nascimento e Raymundo Proença, ambos produzidos por autores paraenses e utilizados nas instituições de ensino desse Estado. Por meio da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, buscamos investigar a regionalização do ensino de História nas primeiras décadas do século XX e como os manuais analisados apresentaram a História nacional e os processos históricos regionais. O aporte teórico perpassa pelos estudos de Chervel (1990) acerca das disciplinas escolares, de Choppin (2004, 2009) e de Bittencourt (2008) sobre a produção e a utilização de manuais didáticos, travando um diálogo com o conceito de representação de Chartier (1990). Além desses autores, também são relevantes as considerações de Bourdieu (1989) sobre os mecanismos de construção da identidade regional. Com esta pesquisa, pudemos averiguar que a regionalização do ensino de História não é algo recente e que o ensino proposto nos dois manuais que analisamos tinha a pretensão de forjar uma identidade regional para os paraenses, ao mesmo tempo em que ajudava na construção da identidade nacional brasileira.
This dissertation aims to analyze the teaching of History in elementary schools of Pará State, Brazil, in the first decades of the twentieth century, considering the representations produced by authors from Pará and conveyed in Apostilas de História do Pará (1915) by Theodoro Braga, and Noções de História Pátria (1920) by Sílvio Nascimento and Raymundo Proença textbooks, and used in educational institutions of this State. Using documentary and bibliographical research, the regionalization of history teaching in the first decades of the twentieth century was explored, analyzing how the textbooks presented the national history and regional historical processes. The theoretical approach permeates the study of Chervel (1990) about the school subjects of Choppin (2004, 2009) and of Bittencourt (2008) on the production and use of textbooks, promoting a dialogue with the representation concept of Chartier (1990). In addition to these authors, considerations of Bourdieu (1989) are also relevant on the construction of mechanisms of regional identity. With this research, it could be verified that the regionalization of history teaching is not something new and that teaching proposed in the two analyzed textbooks was meant to forge a regional identity for Pará population, at the same time that helped in the construction of Brazilian national identity.

The thesis analyses representations of body and class, and their wider ideological meaning, in Swedish power sports from 1920 to 1960. Boxing and weightlifting – sports dominated by manual workers – are chosen as study objects. The sources used are magazines connected to the power sports, and autobiographies by four prominent athletes. The thesis relates to different areas of previous research. One concerns the body as such, from a social and cultural history perspective, another revolves around medial and autobiographical representations in relation to sports, and a third is about the relationships between body, class and sport. In the analysis, the Bourdieusian concepts capital and hexis are added to a discussion on the ways that value is attached to the body, linked to the notions of use value and exchange value. The content analysis of the source material makes ground for an analysis of more implicit ideological aspects, e.g. using Barthes’s theory on mythology. Manual labour and working life appear as central organising themes in the source material. Boxing and weightlifting were largely regarded and designated as professions, challenging ideals of amateurism. A physically demanding manual work was depicted as natural breeding grounds where sports practitioners became skilled. This masculine ideal united people from various manual working groups (not only from the working class in its socio-economic sense) where the emphasis was put on the physical strength and ability of the athlete to work hard. The body was used in a form of class polemics, preferably against middle and upper class people. Certain aspects of strength and style of athletic performance were related to particular levels of intelligence and education. Power athletes from the manual working groups were depicted as “natural”, with associations to rural areas, not least working in the forest. The ideas of naturalness in its most derogatory sense of being close to animals and lacking civilisation, was however mostly used in connections with black athletes. Success stories were common narratives about power sports as arenas of success. They included a powerful norm that success must be cultivated, where the responsibility was put upon the athlete himself. Successful athletes from manual working groups could transform their physical capital into economic capital, which was often depicted as short-lived because of aging and individual shortcomings. A commercial consumer culture became more explicit in the 1950s, when bodybuilding had its Swedish breakthrough within weightlifting. Sports training was rationalised and largely decoupled from its associations with manual work. This led to an increased reification of the body as pure surface, which was attributed a value itself. The body became an area of consumption, a commodity with an exchange value, when decoupled from its use value as labour or tool for sporting success. As to the ideological aspects of the development, it is shown that there was a widespread individualist norm. Only the individual himself had the possibility to rise up and achieve success. The ideal of manual work was more of a moral and cultural nature, than political. Although there were some collectivist features in that rhetoric, the manual worker idealisation fundamentally carried an individualistic tendency. It is argued that this idealisation, or workerism, is a fruitful object for further analyses.

Manuel Bryennius’ Harmonics, written around 1300 AD in Byzantium, is the last compendium of classical musical theory that came down to us. It therefore belongs to the era of the Paleologean Renaissance. Until today, only two editions of this text are available, the first one by J. Wallis in 1699 and the second one by G. H. Jonker in 1970. None of them gives a reliable and complete study of the textual tradition. This new edition should provide such a critical approach and a French translation, intended for the use of both Hellenists and musicologists. A commentary is provided, as well as a thorough study of the multiple diagrams and of all the sources used by Bryennius. It can be shown that Bryennius was very careful in gathering almost all possible material on the subject of ancient Greek music theory, and that he is therefore the last member of a long lasting tradition dating back to the 4th century BC. At the same time, he constitutes an interesting case study for the intellectual life and milieu of the early 14th century Byzantium

At once general and detailled, the analysis of the five novels constituting the silent war is a way of highlighting the close relationships between history and epic in that cycle. While idealizing the indian community, the author aims at denouncing the peruvian oligarchic power, this being set up against the historic background of the pasco comuneros' rebellion that took place between 1950 and 1962. Manuel scorza's epic cycle is thus a way of pondering the writing of history abd reconsi dering the place alloted within the nation to those who have always been excluted from it, hence his assertion that history can only be reclaimed through a violent, progressive coming to awareness. This is perfectly rendered by the ascending spiral construction resorted to in the silent war. Owing to its unchangeable dimension and because of the striking relationships between myth and history, the epic is at best when describing the process leading to an osmosis between the historical and the mythical and opening on to tragic failure, as andean comuneros have always been enthralled by that myth that has so far prevented them from playing an active role on the historical scene. Manuel scorza's classic, popular epic also poses the problem of the conflicting relationship latin america has with its history, as well as the powwer of literature on it. It is all in all more akin to romance, legend and tragedy than to indigenous literature

This thesis focuses on three texts of meditation practice that belong to the Mind Series (Sems sde) subdivision of the Great Perfection (Rdzogs chen) school of Tibetan Buddhism. The 'Rnying ma bka' ma' collections and Kong sprul's 'Gdams ngag mdzod' propose this group of texts as representative of the methods ('lugs') of meditation of the Rdzogs chen Sems sde. This thesis aims to trace the specific history of each of these three texts and to determine their role in the wider context of the Mind Series tradition. In order to accomplish this, the three chapters examine textual references to these methods and compare them with the information provided in the texts themselves. Here, the analysis of the lineages of transmission assumes an important role in unfolding the narrative in which these methods were embedded, a narrative that is sometimes historical and sometimes constructed (and more frequently a mix of the two). Moreover, the study of the lineages has a twofold effect: it clarifies the identities of the authors of these methods which have up to now remained in a state of uncertainty and confusion in Western literature; and it justifies the choice of these three texts as prototypes of the 'Rdzogs chen bka' ma sems sde'.

Using the oral memory, as a source, the present study is to discuss and endorse the playing fields, experiences, strengths, daily struggles, practices and experiences concerning the remaining community quilombola Mangal / Barro Vermelho, located in the rural township of Sitio do Mato-BA in the Médio São Francisco. What we try to understand in this work are the forms of struggle and resistance of these people, as well as cultural landmarks that particularise this community and how they collaborate for their identity formation as well as understand the socioeconomic and cultural dynamics of these citizens today: its difficulties, challenges, struggles, the relationships that are built and reconstructed in the daily life, questioning these new relationships that are forged in the social dynamics of these residents. Being located in the community são franciscana region, where since the sixteenth century the black presence appeared as a determining factor in the socioeconomic and cultural background of the region, mainly in the creation and management of cattle, but also in agricultural production and relationship with the river, talking about the living conditions of these individuals, their social relations with other communities. We discuss the denomination of the term quilombo and their transformations over time, and the political struggle that today the remaining communities have to face for self recognition. Finally, we understand the importance of education in the continuity and updating traditions and to build the identity of these new people
Utilizando a memória oral como fonte, o presente estudo busca apresentar e referendar os campos de atuação, vivências, resistências, lutas cotidianas, práticas e experiências referentes à comunidade remanescente quilombola de Mangal/Barro Vermelho, localizada na zona rural do município de Sítio do Mato-BA, na região do Médio São Francisco. O que buscamos compreender neste trabalho são as formas de resistência desses sujeitos, os marcos culturais que particularizam essa comunidade e como colaboram para a sua formação identitária, bem como compreender a dinâmica socioeconômica e cultural desses sujeitos na atualidade: suas dificuldades, desafios, lutas, as relações que são construídas e reconstruídas no cotidiano, sem deixar, é claro, de problematizar essas novas relações que se forjam na dinâmica social desses moradores. Sendo a comunidade localizada na região são franciscana, onde, desde o século XVI, a presença negra se apresentou como um fator determinante na formação socioeconômica e cultural da região, principalmente, na criação e manejo do gado, na produção agrícola e na relação de vivências com o rio, historicizamos as condições de vida desses sujeitos e suas relações com outras comunidades. Apresentamos uma discussão sobre a denominação do termo quilombo, suas transformações ao longo do tempo, bem como da luta política que, na atualidade, as comunidades remanescentes têm que enfrentar para o autorreconhecimento. Por fim, buscamos compreender a importância da educação para continuidade e atualização das tradições e para construção da identidade desses novos sujeitos

Abstract:
This essay is a qualitative interview study of how six upper secondary school history teachers view and work with students’ diversity of identities in teaching. The questions that the study sought to answer were how history teachers viewed and worked with students’ diversity of identities, as exemplified by specific assignments, along with their selection of teaching materials, and the impact of their own identity on their teaching. These questions were analysed using Manuel Castells’ three aspects of legitimate identity, resistance identity, and project identity, complemented by Carsten Ljunggren’s reasoning concerning a national identity, as the main theoretical framework. In doing so, the study concluded that the teachers viewed working with identity in the history subject as a luxury, dependent on factors such as lesson time, adaption to students, citizen education, and the room for a norm-critical approach. Due to these factors, it was concluded that the history subject unintentionally and mainly conveyed a legitimate identity to the students.  From their exemplified assignments, the study found that student-centred assignments more often enabled the inclusion of resistance identities as well as project identities. The teachers claimed that teaching materials such as textbooks were Eurocentric and needed to be complemented by other material to include other perspectives. It was also concluded that teachers’ gender, social class, and ethnicity had an impact on their teaching. The study found that a new national identity in the history subject, as illustrated by the inclusion of project identities, was linked to the use of intercultural pedagogy and student-centred assignments.

La historia es un espacio de disputas. La consolidación de visiones, posturas e ideologías en el marco de la disciplina, hacen de ella un espacio de disputa simbólica, donde la última palabra la tiene quien logra imponer sus términos. El caso chileno no escapa a dicha realidad. Determinadas lecturas sobre procesos particulares recientes han impuesto un velo interpretativo que ha terminado por censurar las aproximaciones a ciertos hechos que escapan del sentido común establecido o, como se puede afirmar, pactado. Sobre el periodo circunscrito entre los años 1973 y 1990 ha dominado una perspectiva coherente con el Chile de hoy, caracterizada por miradas interesadas en la construcción de una sociedad determinada. En este amplio espectro de ámbitos, existen algunos menos visitados que otros y que, a su vez, gozan de una mayoría interpretativa en la producción de sentido que llega a considerar “natural” ciertas posiciones. Este es el caso de lo que se denominó “todas las formas de lucha”. La frase pronunciada en 1980 por Luis Corvalán, secretario general del Partido Comunista, fue materia de discusión vital de largos años y se sentó en la mesa de miles de chilenos como un camino propuesto para el fin de la dictadura y, posteriormente, como una tesis derrotada por los hechos. Lo que en esos años fue una posición adoptada por el PC y su fuerza militar propia, el Frente Patriótico Manuel Rodríguez -como una fracción de las agrupaciones políticas chilenas que se atrevieron a formar a sus militantes en las armas-, hoy es analizado en retrospectiva como una desviación de los comunistas, desviación que le significó una incómoda posición en la transición. Mientras algunos de quienes promulgaban la “desobediencia civil” -término adoptado por posiciones moderadas para desestabilizar la dictadura- avalaron implícitamente y participaron en la vía armada desde posiciones más ocultas, formaron luego parte de altos cargos del gobierno posdictatorial, mientras quienes evidenciaron su posición y apoyaron las manifestaciones con algo más que piedras han sido marginados del espacio político. Sin duda, la validez de la posición adoptada por el FPMR ha sido lapidada por la historia de quienes pactaron con la dictadura su término. Lo que nos anima a emprender la labor de investigar un proceso reciente de la historia de nuestro país, radica en la intención de buscar, más allá de miradas reduccionistas, un acercamiento al fenómeno de la violencia en la política. Somos parte de una generación que revivió la historia desde la memoria de otros, reuniéndola como un puzzle incompleto de historias de armas y luchas sociales para el retorno heroico a la democracia. Al crecer, lo heroico daría paso a la duda y a la relativización de esos argumentos en virtud de hechos incuestionables, a los que, no obstante, se les dio una interpretación triunfalista en la historia reciente de nuestro país. Hoy emprendemos este trabajo buscando entender las motivaciones personales de hombres y mujeres que optaron por una posición hoy duramente cuestionada. No obstante, no pretendemos hacer un panegírico sobre las historias de vida o las virtudes combativas de sus protagonistas, sino más bien nos interesa comprender las complejidades del contexto histórico, las causas y consecuencias que van tomando las decisiones al fragor de la lucha contra la dictadura, emprendida por miles de chilenos. Buscamos con esta investigación poner en valor una serie de hechos que llevaron a madurar diversas variables en un contexto histórico particular que desencadenaron la opción por la vía armada. La resistencia a la dictadura tuvo amplio eco en los años „80 y las movilizaciones sociales cobraban una naturalidad que venía de sensaciones cotidianas, vivencias diarias de la cara más brutal de la dictadura, que los obligó, en algunos casos, a responder con un grito, luego una piedra, y así sucesivamente… El FPMR fue un actor relevante en la dictadura, cuya existencia cobra más protagonismo en la segunda mitad de los ochenta, período que marca el clímax del fin de la dictadura. Posiblemente no fue de la forma deseada y planificada por el FPMR, pero 1986 sí fue el año definitivo para avanzar hacia una salida pactada de la dictadura, donde los intereses de los capitales nacionales y extranjeros quedaran resguardados, un modelo económico ya instalado y unas reformas políticas firmadas por el grupo gobernante en consenso con los nuevos inquilinos de La Moneda. Este proceso requería, como factor principal, la exclusión del escenario político tanto del Partido Comunista y del FPMR como de otras tantas plurales manifestaciones de movimiento popular. Es pertinente definir a qué organización nos referimos cuando hablamos del Frente Patriótico Manuel Rodríguez. Hasta el día de hoy existen movimientos rodriguistas que difieren en sus objetivos y formas de trabajo, por lo que optamos por una distinción temporal. El FPMR, desde su fundación, se desarrolla de una forma particular durante los años „84 y ‟85, profundiza su táctica al año siguiente, y se comienza a desfigurar luego de la muerte de Raúl Pellegrin y Cecilia Magni en 1988, como figuras simbólicas de la estrategia denominada Guerra Patriótica Nacional. Así, es pertinente enfrentarlo como tal hasta fines de 1988. De ahí en más, el escenario político en Chile entra en otro período, y del mismo modo lo hace el Frente. La historia posterior sería necesario emprenderla en profundidad y con los resguardos del caso en otra investigación, con la cautela de entrar en una historia que sigue muy viva. De esta forma, la presente investigación busca reconstruir la historia del Frente Patriótico Manuel Rodríguez durante la dictadura, dándose la tarea de indagar sobre todo sus orígenes e impulsos desde el Partido Comunista, revisando su desarrollo hasta fines de los ‟80, y repasa superficialmente algunos de los acontecimientos que le dieron notoriedad pública durante la década de los ‟90.

This dissertation explores Buddhist architecture in America from the nineteenth century through the present day. It examines significant examples of Buddhist architecture with respect to the spiritual beliefs of the practitioners who created them. Its goal is to understand these structures from the point of view of human experience. Given the large number of Buddhist structures that exist in the U.S., the narrative navigates the major contours of its development. It follows in isometric fashion the parallel history of Buddhism’s emergence in America that started with the California Gold Rush and its influence on the New England Transcendentalists. Proceeding chronologically through the twentieth and early twenty-first-centuries, the historical sweep of Buddhism’s architectural presence in America is articulated by exploring important structures in depth with respect to Buddhist belief, human emotion, socio-political contexts, and religious faith. A number of hermeneutic binaries are employed throughout the history presented here. Space and Place, East and West, Interior and Exterior, and Spirit and Matter are the major motifs implemented to explicate the buildings and environments under investigation. The overwhelming feeling pervading the discourse and design of Buddhist architecture and its co-extensive belief system is that of the heart. The human proclivity to attach personal meaning and deep emotion to a space or a place is at the express core of the Buddhist structures that house Buddhist practices. As a result, the study’s methodology is inspired by Yi-Fu Tuan’s humanistic geography, whose work explores the relationship between environment and human subjective experience. The study finds that ritual, lineage, and heritage work in tandem with heart, home, and the human body in the construction, understanding and experience of Buddhist architecture. It argues that traditional forms and practices derived from each community’s home culture infused a sense of shelter and protection onto these buildings. Buddhist belief and its associated architecture assuaged the new and sometimes hostile setting of the United States. As the first study of its kind, this dissertation opens the field of Buddhist architecture in America as a distinct branch of scholarly inquiry.

This study aims to analyze the cultural, social and political Iberian trajectory of Martín de Azpilcueta Navarro in the sixteenth century. We seek to emphasize the studies around the religion’s and educational’s fields, in order to realize the new profile of the modern confession and the relation between Navarro and the Society of Jesus. Among the used sources we emphasize some Azpilcueta Navarro Martín’s manuals, especially the Manual Confessors & Penitents of 1560, letters written by the gownsman and by the priest Manuel da Nobrega, the Ecumenical Council of Trent and the Fourth Lateran Council. To build this work we analyzed the life story or biography. It is not intended here to present the own subject, through his life ( his (experiences, living spaces, etc.) the social and cultural practices of the Iberian Peninsula in the sixteenth century. We present connections between Martin de Azpilcueta Navarro and the Society of Jesus, this order was chosen by the Council of Trent to spread the faith and the Catholic doctrine among the heathen lands overseas. In the reforms’s context, the Navarro’s action in the disclosure if the new confession’s model through his classes and works, was very important in the formation of many Jesuit priests, especially Father Manuel da Nobrega, chief of the first Jesuit mission sent to America Portuguese in 1549. From the missionary work, the Catholic doctrine and religious practices were widespread on Earth Brasillis, which were developed in colonial society for centuries follwing.
O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar os aspectos culturais, sociais e políticos na Península Ibérica através da trajetória de Martín de Azpilcueta Navarro no século XVI. Procuramos enfatizar os estudos em torno do campo religioso e educacional, a fim de perceber o novo perfil da confissão moderna e a relação entre Navarro e a Companhia de Jesus. Dentre as fontes utilizadas destacamos alguns manuais de Martín Azpilcueta Navarro, sobretudo o Manual de Confessores & Penitentes de 1560, cartas escritas pelo catedrático e pelo Padre Manuel da Nóbrega, o Concílio Ecumênico de Trento e o IV Concílio de Latrão. Para construirmos esse trabalho, utilizamos a análise de trajetória de vida ou biografia. Não se pretende aqui apresentar o sujeito em si, mas observar através dele (suas experiências, espaços de convivência, etc) as práticas sociais e culturais da Península Ibérica no século XVI. Procuramos apresentar as conexões entre Martín de Azpilcueta Navarro e a Companhia de Jesus, ordem escolhida pelo Concílio de Trento para disseminar a fé e doutrina católica entre os gentios das terras além-mar. No contexto das reformas, a ação de Navarro na divulgação do novo modelo de confissão, por meio de suas aulas e obras, foi fundamental para a formação de muitos padres jesuítas, sobretudo do padre Manuel da Nóbrega, chefe da primeira missão jesuítica enviada à América Portuguesa em 1549. A partir do trabalho missionário foi difundido na Terra Brasillis a doutrina católica e as práticas religiosas que se desenvolveram na sociedade colonial pelos séculos seguintes.

This thesis is about ‘military manuals’ produced in the first few centuries of the Roman imperial period. It argues that these texts merit far more attention and appreciation than they have received in the scholarship so far. I will explore areas such as the way in which their authors order and rank Greek and Roman knowledge, engage with ideas about knowledge and power, help construct identity and discuss ethics and behavior. In the first chapter I will determine whether the authors operate within a specific ‘genre’, or ‘genres’, of military writing. Then I will explore how the texts relate to other traditions of technical texts, questions of audience, and finally the issue of their practicality. The second chapter will examine how authors tackle the issue of ‘Greek’ and ‘Roman’ knowledge, categorize, rank and use it for self-promotion. We will see how Roman knowledge is both subverted but also praised, and how Greek knowledge is at the same time placed above Roman knowledge and integrated into a narrative of continuity with it. The third chapter will focus on the use of Greek knowledge in the construction of Roman identity. I will explore how ‘manuals’ play a part in the identity of the Roman Empire, fitting into a picture of unity in diversity, and show how they contribute to Hadrian’s self-presentation. The fourth chapter will examine the ethical component in manuals. I will determine whether there was an ethical code of conduct in battle in the Classical world and whether it was different from general ethical norms. Then, we will examine whether our texts engage in any way with this ‘code’ and whether their individual approaches have anything in common or are fundamentally different.

The dissertation studies sixteenth-century German artists' manuals (Kunstbüchlein), a new kind of book that addresses certain types of artistic practices. The Kunstbüchlein testify to and shape transformations of knowledge in early modern Europe. Disseminating practical knowledge in printed form, they endowed craft know-how with a form of authority until then reserved for the liberal arts. They aimed also to reconcile theoretical and practical knowledge, what Albrecht Dürer (the crucial forerunner to the authors of the Kunstbüchlein) termed respectively Kunst and Brauch. Authors Sebald Beham, Heinrich Voghterr, Heinrich Lautensack, and Erhard Schön sought to provide accessible, useful knowledge. Focused on a limited set of topics, they pretended to be closer to practice and to respond more effectively to the needs of their apprentices than Dürer and others in their publications. In fact, the Kunstbüchlein did not mediate Brauch, but show instead what their authors understood Brauch to be. Emphasizing the hands-on acquisition of knowledge through looking, reading, and doing, the Kunstbüchlein placed the printed image, whether as schematic diagram or finished illustration, at the core of the didactic process.

Resumo: A avaliação dos romances de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, contemporânea aos seus lançamentos, foi predominantemente elogiosa. Isso fica claro por meio das críticas, notícias de publicação e notas diversificadas que foram publicados nos jornais oitocentistas cariocas. Essa recepção crítica, no entanto, conflita com a que foi realizada posteriormente, sobretudo nas histórias literárias do século XX, as quais cristalizaram uma avaliação dos romances macedianos apontando-os como exemplos de puerilidade e sentimentalismo, o que os tornariam próprios para a leitura das mocinhas. Dessa forma, analisar essa primeira recepção, perceber as convenções que regulavam o gênero romanesco na época, e a forma como Macedo inseriu sua produção nesse cenário, constitui-se uma tarefa que certamente lançará uma visada sobre a obra macediana que relativizará o anacronismo que freqüentemente regula essa recepção crítica posterior, além de permitir ao leitor contemporâneo uma familiarização com o diálogo que a obra de Macedo travou com sua própria época
Abstract: The evaluation of the novels of Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, at the time of their release, was predominantly of praise. This critical reception, however, conflicts with the previous one, especially of the literary works of the 20th century, which crystallized an evaluation of the Macedo novels, marking them as examples of childishness and sentimentalism. Thus, analyzing this first reception, noticing the conventions that regulated the Romanesque genre at that time, and the way in which Macedo inserted his production into this scenario, is a task that will certainly shed new light on the works of Macedo, which will reduce to relativity the anachronism that often regulates this later critical reception

This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict.
Aquesta tesi doctoral aborda la biografia intel•lectual de l’escriptor i periodista Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889-Figueres 1956). Reconstrueix la trajectòria vital i professional de l’autor i estudia les facetes més rellevants de la seva producció literària i periodística. A més s’hi analitzen els seus textos literaris. S’ha posat especial èmfasi en l’estudi de la producció periodística de Brunet, així com en l’anàlisi del perfil professional de l’autor. L’examen i valoració de la seva producció ha estat detinguda, amb l’agrupació dels articles per àmbits temàtics i la comparació del seu estil amb el d’altres autors contemporanis, tant catalans (Josep Pla i Josep M. de Sagarra) com francesos (Charles Maurras i Léon Daudet) i anglesos (G. K. Chesterton i Hilaire Belloc). A l’última part del treball, s’aborda l’anàlisi de la condició de “vencedor vençut” de Manuel Brunet després de la guerra, i la forma com aquest autor és exemple de tota una generació d’escriptors catalanistes conservadors que van viure una situació complicada després del conflicte.

O estudo da obra de Manuel Córrego (1932) é inédito nos meios acadêmicos. Seus romances, contos e peças teatrais dialogam amiúde com a literatura e com a história portuguesas. O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a peça de sua autoria, O Casamento de D. Manuel I (2004), e estabelecer relações intertextuais com seus paradigmas ficcionais, ou seja, os romances históricos Crônica esquecida DEl Rei D. João II (1998), de Seomara da Veiga Ferreira e A Sala das Perguntas (1998), de Fernando Campos. Esta análise foi fundamentalmente baseada nos estudos de Flávia Maria Corradin em seu livro Antônio José da Silva, o Judeu: textos versus (con)textos (1998). A análise engloba também a relação entre a obra teatral estudada e o período histórico que a ela se refere, no caso, o reinado de D. Manuel I e a áurea época dos descobrimentos, quando Portugal se tornou potência ultramarina e vanguardista nas grandes navegações. A dissertação mostra a representação mental do monarca construída por alguns historiadores renomados e também pelo cronista oficial do rei, Damião de Góes, na Crônica do felicíssimo Rei D. Emmanuel, e os confronta com o perfil criado pelo dramaturgo para sua personagem. Damião de Góes também é importante personagem da peça e sua criação também é discutida no trabalho. Por meio da análise intertextual observa-se que tipo de relação existe entre a peça e seus paradigmas, bem como os elementos ficcionais e históricos que ajudaram o dramaturgo a compor sua trama e criar suas personagens, destacando em seu trabalho o tempo histórico e a realidade que deseja representar, mediante sua própria visão ideológica, o que resultou em sua premiada peça teatral.
The study of Manuel Córrego´s (1932) work is unplublished in academic fields. His romances, tales and plays talk frequently with Portuguese literature and history. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze one of his plays, O Casamento de D. Manuel I (2004), and establish inter textual relationships with his fictional paradigms, in other words, historical romances, such as, Crônica esquecida DEl Rei D. João II (1998), by Seomara da Veiga Ferreira and A Sala das Perguntas (1998), by Fernando Campos. This analysis was fundamentally based on Flávia Maria Corradin´s studies in her book Antônio José da Silva, o Judeu: textos versus (con)textos (1998). The analysis also includes the relation between the studied play and the referred historical period, in this case, D. Manuel I´s reign and the discoveries golden era, when Portugal became an overseas power and avant-garde in navigations. This dissertation shows the monarch´s mental representation build by some renowned historians and also by the king´s official chronicler, Damião de Góes, in Crônica do felicíssimo Rei D. Emmanuel, and confronts them with the profile created by the dramatist for his character. Damião de Góes is also an important character of the play and his creation in also discussed in this work. Through intertextual analysis, we can visualize what kind of relationship exists between the play and its paradigms, and also fictional and historical elements that helped the dramatist to compose his plot and create his characters, highlighting in his work the historical period and the reality that he wanted to represent, by his own ideological vision, that resulted in his awarded play.

Cette thèse présente l’analyse de la trilogie de José Manuel Fajardo (1957) constituée par les trois romans, Carta del fin del mundo (1996), El Converso (1998) et Mi nombre es Jamaica (2010). Ces trois œuvres font partie du sous-genre, roman istorique d’aventures. À travers l‘étude du temps, de l’espace et des personnages, ce travail de recherche a pour objectif de délimiter la part de l’histoire et de l’aventure au sein de ces trois œuvres qui renvoient à des périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’Espagne (la conquête, le Siècle d’or). Les nombreuses références à l’expulsion des Morisques ou à la diaspora sépharade témoignent de la volonté de l’auteur de faire œuvre d’historien en sauvant de l’oubli certains pans de l’histoire d’Espagne délaissés par l’Histoire officielle. Cette récupération historique va de pair avec une fictionnalisation de cette matière historique (la découverte de l’Amérique, la piraterie au XVIIe siècle, dans les Caraïbes et en méditerranée) qui permet à l’auteur de créer de l’aventure. Cette aventure est vécue par les héros comme une quête identitaire qui les conduit, à travers la traversée d’innombrables espaces, vers leur Terre promise ; ce qui leur confère une indéniable épaisseur humaine
This thesis introduces the trilogy by José Manuel Fajardo (1957) composed of Carta del fin del mundo (1996), El Converso (1998) and Mi nombre es Jamaica (2010).These three works are part of the historical adventure novel sub-genre. Focusing on time, space and characters, this research work is aimed at making a distinction between history and adventure in these three works that refer to significant periods in the history of Spain (the conquest, the Golden Age). The numerous references to the expulsion of the Moriscos or the Sephardic diaspora show the author's willingness to work as a historian by saving fromoblivion some parts of Spanish history neglected by official history. This historical exploitation goes hand in hand with fictionalizing the historical matter _such as the discovery of America or piracy in the seventeenth century in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean seas_ which makes it possible for the author to create adventure. This adventure is experienced by the heroes as a search for identity that leads them, through the crossing of countless spaces, to their promised land; whichgives them potent human depth

Iremos neste trabalho elaborar uma história dos processos de ocupação da Amazônia, do Estado do Amazonas e principalmente questionar quais as razões para que nesse processo a Cidade de Manaus tenha tido sua história urbana e da própria cidade em si, tendo sido construída com lapsos de memória, esquecimentos de determinados momentos de sua história como cidade.
Territories, spaces, life lived in areas of the city help us understand the political processes of citizenship formation, imagination, memories and how nominated, and we mention we use our spaces. This work will develop a history of the processes of occupation of the Amazon, the State of Amazonas and mostly questioning the reasons for that in this process the City of Manaus had its own urban history and the city itself, having been built with memory lapses, forgetting certain moments of its history as a city.

To realize the richness of Manuel Bandeira’s prose as a historical source a very extensive contact is not necessary. Broadly focused by literary studies, the attention given to the poet by other areas of the humanities seems, still shy, especially when it comes to his work in prose. In this work we use chronicles from the Andorinha, Andorinha book, with the intention of delineating the Brazilianness in Bandeira’s perspective. The book, which covers 40 years of the author's production (1920-1960), was organized by Carlos Drummond de Andrade and published in 1966, bringing texts of various topics in which we seek to realize the national theme’s emphasis, and how it is presented in his chronicles, even in language issue’s, or texts about music, art and poetry. In reviewing these texts it is clear that the proximity to the modernists, especially his friendship with Mario de Andrade, marks the thought of the poet on Brazil. With this, we used a sample from the established correspondence between the two authors as research support, which was revealed as an extremely rich research source of Brazilian’s culture. Starting from the field of cultural history, our research seeks to think the Bandeira's prose as a (priviledged) representation form of that context and, by extension, the dialogue with his own time.
Não é necessário um contato muito extenso para perceber a riqueza da prosa de Manuel Bandeira enquanto fonte histórica – e suas possibilidades. Largamente focado pelos estudos literários, a atenção dada ao poeta por outras áreas das Ciências Humanas parece, ainda, tímida – quando mais se tratando de sua obra em prosa. Neste trabalho utilizaremos crônicas do livro Andorinha, Andorinha na intenção de delinear a brasilidade na perspectiva de Bandeira. O livro, que aborda 40 anos da produção do autor (1920-1960), foi organizado por Carlos Drummond de Andrade e publicado em 1966, trazendo textos de temas diversos, nos quais buscamos perceber a tônica da temática nacional, e como ela se apresenta em suas crônicas, seja na questão da língua, ou em textos sobre música, artes plásticas e poesia. Ao analisarmos tais textos nos fica claro que a proximidade com os modernistas marca o pensamento do poeta sobre o Brasil, sobretudo sua amizade com Mário de Andrade. Com isso, utilizamos como apoio para a pesquisa parte da correspondência estabelecida entre os dois autores, que se configura em fonte extremamente rica para a pesquisa da cultura brasileira. Partindo do campo da História Cultural, nossa pesquisa busca pensar a prosa de Bandeira como uma (privilegiada) forma de representação acerca daquele contexto e, por extensão, em diálogo com seu próprio tempo.

En la presente investigación damos cuenta de cómo se estructuró y colapsó una red comercial en el espacio económico peruano a mediados del siglo XVII, esto a través del seguimiento de un caso particular, el del capitán y maestre de navío Manuel Rodríguez entre los años 1625 a 1656. Pese a la brevedad del lapso tratado, el caso de Rodríguez es relevante por situarse justo en el momento en el cual comenzaba un periodo de readecuaciones económicas producto de la crisis del mineral de Potosí, polo de arrastre de las economías regionales en la etapa previa, y por tanto, nos ha permitido evaluar el carácter, profundidad y extensión de las transformaciones desarrolladas a nivel global y de manera particular sus efectos en el comercio interregional.
