Abstract:
Abstract In 1571 mapmakers Johannes Mellinger and Tilemann Stella produced a map of the county of Mansfeld, Luther’s birthplace. This article considers this map as a complex printed material object: it is far more than a straightforward representation of place as it is covered with historical details, quotations, writing and references to Luther’s life, the Reformation and Mansfeld’s history. It created a notion of Lutheran space and used this space as a form of memory-making and memorialization at a critical time in Lutheran history. The decades following the death of Luther, in 1546, were a time of crisis, when Lutheranism grieved the loss of the Wittenberg reformer while also inscribing its presence on the confessional map of sixteenth-century Europe. Mellinger and Stella’s map of Mansfeld reveals how second-generation Lutherans reconceptualized the landscape to provide an alternative way of writing Luther’s life, and how Lutherans could integrate pasts and places which were not specifically Lutheran into a providential narrative. The map addressed the tensions of tradition and novelty with its composite, hybrid form that combined space, events and person, and it historicized and reimagined space. This map demands that we think about how space functioned within a culture which wanted to remember Luther’s life and write histories in a way that could validate Lutheranism and its future, and in particular it focuses our attention on how memory-making at this specific point of existential concern shaped the Lutheran Church.

Abstract:

Christman, Robert John. "Heretics in Luther's homeland: The controversy over original sin in late sixteenth-century Mansfeld." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290025.

Full text
Abstract:
During the early 1570s, a dispute over the theological definition of original sin rent the central German county of Mansfeld, homeland of Martin Luther. The controversy, initiated by Matthias Flacius Illyricus, divided the conservative Gnesio-Lutheran clergy into two hostile camps. One, led by the Superintendent Hieronymus Mencel, was centered in the city of Eisleben and rejected Flacius's definition of original sin. The other, centered in the city of Tal Mansfeld, was led by the powerful deacon, historian, and polemicist Cyriacus Spangenberg, and accepted Flacius's definition. This dissertation examines the central doctrinal premises over which these clerics fought, as well as their broader implications for Lutheran theology, before turning to other social, political, and economic factors that influenced the clerics' decisions to side with one group or the other. But the controversy was not limited to the clergy. The counts of Mansfeld, numbering between seven and ten during the period and stemming from three dynastic lines, also split over the issue of original sin. One line sided with the group of clerics centered in Eisleben, two with the pastors headquartered in Tal Mansfeld. This study explores the involvement of the counts in the debate over doctrine, but also addresses the various political and other non-religious forces that caused them to split over the issue. With the pastors preaching and pamphleteering and the counts battling among themselves, it did not take long for the laity to become deeply involved and divided over the issue of original sin. Contemporary sources suggest that the miners of Mansfeld fought in the streets and taverns over the issue. This study explores how the clerics articulated the debate to the laity, and the degree to which these commoners understood it. Furthermore, it explores social and other non-religious reasons why the laity took sides in this doctrinal debate. This dissertation argues that although a variety of forces were at play pushing members of these three groups--the clerics, counts, and commoners--in one direction or another, an interest in the doctrinal issue and its implications for wider theology was a motivating theme central to each group.

Abstract:
On October 22nd, 1565 Count Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel ordered the preacher Martin Chemnitz to locate the literary works of Magister Cyracus Spangenberg on the market, to have them bound luxuriously and to integrate them into the Countship's library. At this point in time, Spangenberg, superior Decan of Mansfield, had produced 64 books spanning approx. 6000 pages. His colleagues in the County of Saxony had also published 64 books. By the time Spangenberg left Mansfield in 1574, the number of publications with clerical contents stemming from Mansfeld had doubled. Although this opus was widely read during Spangenberg's lifetime, the products of the clerical „print metropolis“ Mansfeld have been later all but ignored in the contexts of both general history and church history. My dissertation aims to close this gap. The preachers of Mansfeld produced large amounts of sermons used for instructional purposes, for celebrations and for condolence as well as catechisms, theological disputations, historical essays and spiritual plays. They published their products in the entire “Reich” (the “Holy German Empire”), using the mechanisms of the book market of their times to their advantage. Their clients were theologians, “Weltkinder” (“children of the world”) and “Einfältige” (“simple persons”), and they established links to the churches and the powers of both northern and southern Germany, of France and of the Netherlands. This led to conflicts with the important centers of education in Central Germany – Wittenberg, Leipzig and Jena – and the potentates of the respective regions. The focal point of this dissertation is the question why the preachers of Mansfeld were so keen on participating in the book market of their time. Using synoptic methods, this dissertation ascertains that the wish to partake in the formulation of the clerical, feudal, social and medial structures of their time was a key motif for the work of those writing theologians, along with to the desire of establishing the County of Mansfeld as a European center of Lutheran education using the book.

Abstract:
Abstract For many machines handling lightweight, flexible sheets, it is necessary for the sheet to transit an open space. Examples include magnetic tape drives, xerographic copiers, and sewing machines. The nonlinear theory of the elastica has often been used to model nonlinear, static deflections. Dynamic modeling is more difficult, and far less studied. Recently, however, L. Mansfield and J.G. Simmonds (1987) have considered the dynamic deflection of a sheet emerging from a horizontal channel at constant velocity and subjected to gravity loading. In this paper, we consider a generalization of that problem to include arbitrary exit angles, and an accelerating “feed” rate. Gravity loading is retained. The resulting nonlinear equations of motion are tractable and are solved numerically.

Full text
Abstract:
Several studies in recent years have demonstrated strong effects of typography on text legibility (Arditi, 1996; Arditi, Cagenello, & Jacobs, 1995; Arditi, Knoblauch, & Grunwald, 1990; Loomis, 1990; Mansfield, Legge, & Bane, 1996; Tinker, 1963). The approach taken in this laboratory has been to assess the effects of typographic variables by comparing legibility of fonts that vary only in the dimension of interest (e.g. stroke width, spacing). While in the past we have used reading speed as a legibility criterion (Arditi et al., 1990; Knoblauch, Arditi, & Szlyk, 1991), our recent work has defined legibility as the smallest letter size that can be effectively read. In the present study we examine the legibility of outline fonts relative to their solid counterparts, under conditions of wide and close spacing.

Abstract:
In May and June 2017, April 2019, and May 2021, the Gulf Coast Network (GULN) collected coastal topography data at Padre Island National Seashore (PAIS) as a part of the NPS Vital Signs Monitoring Program. Monitoring was conducted following methods detailed in Monitoring Coastal Topography at Gulf Coast Network Parks: Protocol Implementation Plan (PIP; Bracewell 2017). Key findings from this effort are as follows: A fixed set of 23 topographic transects distributed along the Gulf shore were surveyed. The most accelerated change in profile area occurred in the transect groups located near Mile Markers 15 and 37. This is likely due to the impacts from Hurricane Hanna. The transects on the south end of Padre Island National Seashore near Mansfield Channel showed short-term losses in profile area (2019 to 2021) that are less than the longer-term losses (2017 to 2021). The transect nearest the channel showed substantial recovery, which is related to the deposition of dredged material. This project is in the early phases of implementation and will benefit from future surveys to better understand the influence of slight changes in survey timing and other environmental variations.
