The mangroves of Senegal are characterized by a partial coverage of intertidal zones. Proportionally to the salinity of water and soil, the upper part of the intertidal zone is too salty and acidic for mangrove life to thrive. These areas are referred to as 'tannes'. The interface between the mangrove and the tannes fluctuates over time, in response to variations in the hydrosystem, following climatic fluctuations. Thus, the fluctuations in the mangrove-tanne boundary define the range of metastability and resilience of the mangrove ecosystem in the estuaries of Senegal. A period of drought between the late 1960s and the mid-1990s led to the conversion of mangroves into tannes due to increased salinity. However, since the late 1990s, precipitation levels have returned to near the centennial average, thus promoting mangrove regeneration in the estuaries of Saloum and Casamance. In the Sahelian-Sudanian part of Senegal, the Saloum delta, in a semi-arid environment, exhibits characteristics of a distribution range margin due to extreme salinities. The mangrove in this delta primarily responds spontaneously to environmental fluctuations, providing an opportunity to study its resilience in the face of hydro-climatic disturbances. Furthermore, knowledge gaps hinder the understanding of the reasons behind this dynamic. Weighing the importance of factors influencing the spatial dynamics of the mangrove is therefore a scientific challenge. Consequently, a methodology based on the synergy of remote sensing, in-situ data, as well as statistical and spatial modeling has enabled us to grasp the mangrove's reaction to changes in the hydrosystem. This approach first involves the observation and description of the dynamics of species populations at the distribution range margin in a current reference state. Then, the identification of regime changes in environmental dynamics and their impact on the distribution of species populations over the past decades was considered. Finally, experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of reproduction processes to identified environmental transition thresholds. A spatio-temporal modeling first allowed the reconstruction of these regime changes. Then, the germination opportunity window of species based on hydro-climatic temporal variability was characterized in order to identify the potential instability of the system in the face of disturbances. The results of this thesis indicate that climatic fluctuations in recent decades have affected the spatial structure of species distribution. The mangrove of Saloum has shown overall resilience to rainfall changes, oscillating between 500 mm and 700 mm of annual precipitation, particularly in parts of the delta with the highest salt concentrations. Furthermore, current hydro-climatic conditions seem to favor a trajectory of the mangrove from tannes towards a partial coverage of the intertidal zone, where Avicennia germinans rarely finds conditions conducive to its establishment and colonization of the mangrove-tannes interface. Its establishment capacity appears to require higher cumulative rainfall and an earlier time in the rainy season. Thus, the results of this thesis highlight, more precisely, that a rainfall threshold of 600 mm can likely induce modifications in the spatial organization of mangrove species, depending on whether it is reached in August or at the end of the year
Sakho, Issa. "Evolution et fonctionnement hydro-sédimentaire de la lagune de la Somone, Petite Côte, Sénégal." Rouen, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011ROUES036.
Located at the Petite Côte of Senegal, Somone is a small coastal river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean by a microtidal lagoonal-estuarine ecosystem. Today, the contribution of the watershed is absent due to a combination of several factors including the dam of Bandia. The only freshwater inputs are from precipitation and groundwater. Somone is a lagoonal-estuarine system characterized by an inverse hydrological functioning where marine influences predominate. Mangrove, dominated by Rhizophora, is the main characteristic unit of this coastal system. The diachronic evolution of 60 years shows a significant change for all the morphological units of the ecosystem. The mobility of the sandy spit, which caused the closures of the mouth in 1967-1969 and in 1987, is related to meteorological variations. The regressive surface of mangroves between 1954 and 1989 is the result of the combined effect of these closures of the mouth, drought and traditional uses of mangroves. The restoration of the mangrove is mainly due to reforestation policies administered in the 2000s. The annual and seasonal trend shows that the internal reworking is the main hydro-sedimentary processes. Sedimentation rate of the mud flats is 2 to 3 mm. Year-1. The dynamics of the sandy spit of the Somone plays an important role in the development and quality of internal units, the mangroves in particular. The permanent opening of the mouth allows a twice-daily renewal of water in the lagoon, which is essential for regulating the high salt content. The low content of sediment in total organic carbon, reflect the low organic matter production of the mangrove because it is a young and stunted mangrove. Diagenetic processes are anaerobic and mostly in the top 10 cm of the sediment, on the recent deposit. The contribution of young mangroves, like Somone, in the carbon storage process, is low. The lagoonal-estuarine ecosystem of the Somone is fragile and highly reactive and his evolution is fast and linked to the cumulative effects of natural and anthropogenic factors

The Sine-Saloum inverse estuary, characterized by contrasting salinity, is an important nursery habitat for juvenile fish. The trophic ecology of juvenile for following species: Eucinostomus melanopterus, Ethmalosa fimbriata, Monodactylus sebae and Sarotherodon melanotheron were investigated by coupling stomach content and stables isotopes (¦Ä13C and ¦Ä15N) analyses. The first method revealed that almost all juveniles preyed on a wide diversity of organisms belonging to the periphytic community of mangrove roots. Food change with length for all juveniles and important spatial variation were also identified. Stables isotopes analyse indicate that the food webs origins reaching juvenile fish change with local condition salinity. At downstream, with the moderate salinity (40), the food web is based on phytoplankton without any contribution of mangrove carbon. While in upstream, with high salinity, the food web is based on microphytobenthos. Conditions salinities have effects on juvenile fishes ecology trophic. The plasticity trophic detected may be an particularity adaptation to environmental stress

Degradation of mangroves in Casamance has been strongly influenced by physical constraints. But it is urban sprawl due to population growth, the sharp drawdown of its resources by the population and the implementation of inadequate technical facilities to which accentuated its destruction. The analysis of the history of the uses of this ecosystem, its perception by people of diverse origins, changes in land laws and the specific political context in the region explainalso this situation. It is thus noted that over the years the peri-urban mangrove Ziguinchor keeps losing surfaces. Yet since the 1990s, the beginning of the growing awareness of its importance ecosystem led to the multiplication of projects from development and environmental protection agencies to curb this phenomenon. It appears however as a result of investigations carried out on the ground with the population and operators of these development initiatives including reforestation of mangroves have not always had the desired results, and that because of their low acceptability social, the existence of large disparities in the performance of work and in the allocation of labor resources.Given these difficulties, work tracks are proposed including a Geographic Information System (GIS) which allows for an update on changes in land use. This work provides insight into the changes in land use, including mangrove populations with changing practices and increasing needs. It also helps to have a database onthe development of ground units in the area peri-urban Ziguinchor

Northern regions of Southern-Rivers are studied on thirty years in order to describe landscape changes. This description aims to discuss about landscape degradation in West-Africa. A method, using different tools and disciplines of geography, has been created on that purpose. Salt marshes and continental spaces are two domains where flora and landscapes are; both different. On continental spaces, climatic gradient create a floristic continuum in which two floristic groups largely cross themselves while rural activities create the landscapes geography. In salt marshes, microtopography creates a common structure for both flora and landscape varying with water salinity and conversion of mangroves to rice paddies. Landscape structure changed a lot these thirty last years with 20% of space that at least lost or recovered wooden cover once. Though, these changes increased geographical structures already existing at the end of the 1970's. Phenological rhythms have known few variations in response to rainfall variations. Flora has probably known very few variations of distribution. Drought and economical changes transformed landscapes and rural uses on five studied villages. Decisions are an important in landscape changes observed in thirty years. Studies shown that main landscape changes aren't made of degradations as new landscapes structures offer in 4 situations on five, equal or better ecological services
