Network-based telemetry systems are increasingly being used to improve the flexibility and longevity of flight test systems. Modern network-based flight test systems utilize large numbers of devices including high-speed network switches, data acquisition devices, recorders, and telemetry interfaces, all of which must be managed in a coordinated fashion. The move to network-based testing provides the ability to build a standards-based System Management interface which can status and control a diverse set of devices. The benefits include the ability to easily tailor System Management tools to support many different styles of user interactions and to quickly integrate new types of devices. While the new capabilities presented by System Management are exciting, the very openness of the system presents challenges to ensure that future growth will be seamlessly supported. This paper will discuss issues encountered while implementing flight test System Management tools for a network-based telemetry system.

Abstract:
The Internet, as with networks in general, is increasingly present in our everyday lives. However, its use also highlights some of their limitations, leading researchers to create new network solutions in an attempt to anticipate and solve problems that may arise. These solutions require exhaustive tests before they become eligible for production. Several approaches can be taken to conduct such tests. Simulations are important as first approximations; however, they fail to capture the dynamics and unpredictability of a real environment. Emulations present an alternative, but fail to reproduce more complex scenarios. Experimentation facilities must therefore be deployed, to achieve a higher level of realism. These facilities, also referred as testbeds, involve high-complexity deployment and operation, falling into disuse once they arrive at a final product. Methods of managing these infrastructures must be developed in order to avoid this waste of resources for future tests. This dissertation focuses on the problems inherent to the management of these facilities, with a focus on their users. Different approaches in network testing must be studied and the different methodologies on experimentation must be collected. An application is developed to address this problem, enabling users to create their experiments and collect results in both an organized and effective manner.

Abstract:
To check rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions, many management tools are being used by different industries. In order to address environmental issues the corporate sector has seen a drastic increase in the use of environmental management systems. There is strong need to check how these environmental management systems are rendering environmental management services. Research shows that environmental management systems are mistakenly expected to prescribe technical and environmental objectives. Without describing what goals an organization must achieve, they lay out a system for management of numerous environmental obligations. Hence environmental management systems are not strategic; they tend to reactively fix issues contingent upon their occurrence and may miss opportunities to avoid problems before they occur. Further, environmental management itself is seen in isolation of a socio-ecological context, which makes environmental management lose ground and operate in a virtual vacuum. Mostly environmental management is identified as an ’agenda’ which runs counter to the overall development of an organization. Provided, environmental management systems can be integrated with basic principles of sustainable development these management systems can be utilized as a launching pad to move organizations towards sustainability. Built to render the administrative services only through a mechanism of self regulation and continuous improvement, these management systems can be used to deliver sustainable product planning. The present study illustrates the possibilities for integration of sustainability objectives into environmental management systems. In our effort to integrate sustainability in environment management systems extensive literature reviews, interviews and a case study (Hammarplast AB) have been used. For the analysis of the current reality, a framework for strategic sustainable development and methods incorporating “backcasting from principles of sustainability” – i.e. templates for sustainable product development and strategic life cycle management – has been used. The use of tools not only illustrates contemporary sustainability gaps but also gives a concrete set of guidance to integrate sustainability in environmental management systems.

Abstract:
Accounting is an old discipline inherent to any business. Accounting is divided into Financial Accounting (FA) and Management Accounting (MA). Financial Accounting focuses on the pure processing of the economic data. Management Accounting focuses on the decision-making aspects of the accounting. Accounting industry has been tremendously transformed in the past two decades due to the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. These systems integrate and unify an organisation’s business functions and processes into one complex computer system. Previous research suggests that the ERP systems’ main functionality primarily addresses the issues of Financial Accounting and much less the issues of Management Accounting. The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying factors behind the application of the Management Accounting Techniques through the ERP systems and to suggest a further development in the field. Five large Swedish companies were examined through the comparative case studies with semi-structured interviews. This study discovered that MATs were mostly implemented through spreadsheets, BI systems and custom-built software, i.e. outside of the ERP systems. The main reasons were inflexibility and standard design of the ERP systems, that did not fully suit the companies. Additionally, the customization of the ERP systems would be too costly when other tools, such as BI systems or spreadsheets, provided better functionality to a better price. The conclusion of this study is that it is impossible to build a universal ERP system that would suit all kind of companies, however, ERP systems can serve as a common base and a transaction engine for the MA. ERP systems can provide a data structure for the analysis parameters crucial to MA, such as profit centre, cost centre, unit, and other dimensionality aspects. Spreadsheets and BI systems win the MA battle by providing the flexibility, user-friendliness and the acceptable price, required by the users. Therefore, ERP systems must provide good integration possibilities with other software. One can further speculate if ERP system providers choose not to deliver flexible and visually appealing products, since they benefit from the income that the customer education and the customization of an ERP system implies.

Abstract:
This dissertation proposes an integration process and the implementation of quality management systems, environmental and safety policies, and occupational health. These systems are presently operating separately in the company. The company´s core business is the production of industrial gases and its internal policies establish that the integration process should take into consideration the culture of the organization and also the efforts already taken to move in this direction. The methodology applied for the systems integration management is under knowledge domain and it is being used by organizations and by the academy. It was selected and adopted by a skilled team assigned for this purpose, and it was defined that, instead of restructuring, adjustments would be made to existing systems. There are also comments about weak points identified in the program of implementation of isolated systems that should be considered for the integration process, as well as the needs that drive the integration and expectations related to responsiveness, scope of work, collected results and also the outcome in terms of cultural change. The strategy is considered relevant when deciding for systems integration and for the methodology Six Sigma, which is the tool that allows costs measurement and the implementation of the philosophy of continuous improvement to exceed customer´s expectations.

Abstract:
Although many identity management systems have been proposed, in- tended to improve the security and usability of user authentication, major adoption problems remain. In this thesis we propose a range of novel schemes to address issues acting as barriers to adoption, namely the lack of interoper- ation between systems, simple adoption strategies, and user security within such systems. To enable interoperation, a client-based model is proposed supporting in- terworking between identity management systems. Information Card systems (e.g. CardSpace) are enhanced to enable a user to obtain a security token from an identity provider not supporting Information Cards; such a token, after en- capsulation at the client, can be processed by an Information Card-enabled relying party. The approach involves supporting interoperation at the client, while maximising transparency to identity providers, relying parties and iden- tity selectors. Four specific schemes conforming to the model are described, each of which has been prototyped. These schemes enable interoperation be- tween an Information Card-enabled relying party and an identity provider supporting one of Liberty, Shibboleth, OpenID, or OAuth. To facilitate adoption, novel schemes are proposed that enable Informa- tion Card systems to support password management and single sign on. The schemes do not require any changes to websites, and provide a simple, intu- itive user experience through use of the identity selector interface. They fa- miliarise users with Information Card systems, thereby potentially facilitating their future adoption. To improve user security, an enhancement to Information Card system user authentication is proposed. During user authentication, a one-time pass- word is sent to the user's mobile device which is then entered into the com- puter by the user. Finally, a universal identity management tool is proposed, designed to support a wide range of systems using a single user interface. It provides a consistent user experience, addresses a range of security issues (e.g. phishing), and provides greater user control during authentication.

This paper discusses ongoing regulatory effects on efforts aimed at developing data infrastructures that assist test engineers in achieving information superiority and for maintaining their information, and on possible architectural frameworks for resolving the engineer’s need versus the regulatory requirements. Since current commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems are targeted primarily at business environments such as back office applications, financial sectors, and manufacturing, these COTS systems do not provide sufficient focus for managing the unique aspects of flight test data and associated artifacts (documents, drawings, pretest data, etc.). This paper presents our ongoing efforts for deploying a storage infrastructure independent enterprise data management system for maintaining vital up-to-date information and for managing the archival of such data.

Thesis (S.M. in System Design and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2010.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.

Obsolescence mitigation is an increasingly important aspect of large systems development & maintenance that has often only been considered once obsolescence is imminent. For long lifecycle systems, this has become a major concern as the lifecycles of the components that are encompassed within these systems are often far shorter - up to ten times shorter - than the overall system lifecycle. Many defense systems can be characterized in this manner and therefore require obsolescence mitigation approaches to ensure the continuing ability for the system to perform and evolve. Current system-level obsolescence mitigation practices make recommendations for designing new systems to slow the onset of obsolescence and make the system more flexible when change for obsolescence is required. However, currently fielded systems were often not designed with this in mind. Other obsolescence mitigation techniques focus only on the approach to mitigating component-level obsolescence locally without examining the impact of the change on the system as a whole. This thesis combines the recommended approaches for obsolescence mitigation, the experience and lessons learned for obsolescence mitigation on a real-world case study system gained from interviews with key subject matter experts, along with systems engineering techniques for dealing with engineering change in systems to develop a robust systems engineering and management approach for obsolescence in large complex systems. The thesis provides the reader with a flow chart and a clustered DSM of the tasks along with a checklist that could be used with this obsolescence engineering and management approach.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to help Spotify to improve their internal change management process in their financial system. The work was done by charting the internal teams that create, influence and use data in the company’s financial system. Furthermore, the working methods of the different teams were compared and differences in how they work were identified. Our findings show that there are both different working processes and attitudes between the teams. This creates challenges in the change management process, especially in cross-functional projects. Conclusions from the results are presented as suggestions. These may help to improve the change management process in cross-functional projects at Spotify: Implement a coordinator role, which works as a single point of contact for everything that is related to changes in the financial system. The new role helps to improve the distribution of information. Create a new team that is responsible for all changes that affect the financial system. A new team reduces dependencies betweenthe different teams. Introduce cross-functional project managers who receive dedicated resources to implement projects where multiple teams are involved. The project manager can then take full responsibility for the entire process. Make sure the effectiveness/productivity of all involved teams is measured by the value created for the whole value chain rather than when their respective part has been delivered. Have a workshop (1-5 days) in which participants from the teams that needs to integrate components work together. This will be an effective way to minimize the waiting time between the teams. Create a service level agreement between the different teams, so that each team can efficiently plan their resources and know what to expect from other teams.

Abstract:
Today's embedded distributed real-time systems, are exposed to large variations in resource usage due to complex software applications, sophisticated hardware platforms, and the impact of their run-time environment. As eciency becomes more important, the applications running on these systems are extended with on-line resource managers whose job is to adapt the system in the face of such variations. Distributed systems are often heterogeneous, meaning that the hardware platform consists of computing nodes with dierent performance, operating systems, and scheduling policies, linked through one or more networks using dierent protocols. In this thesis we explore whether resource managers used in such distributed embedded systems are stable, meaning that the system's resource usage is controlled under all possible run-time scenarios. Stability implies a bounded worst-case behavior of the system and can be linked with classic real-time systems' properties such as bounded response times for the software applications. In the case of distributed systems, the stability problem is particularly hard because software applications distributed over the dierent resources generate complex, cyclic dependencies between the resources, that need to be taken into account. In this thesis we develop a detailed mathematical model of an adaptive, distributed real-time system and we derive conditions that, if satised, guarantee its stability.

Knowing which database management system to use for a project is difficult to know in advance. Luckily, there are tools that can help the developer apply the same database design on multiple different database management systems without having to change the code. In this thesis, we investigate the strengths of SQLAlchemy, which is an SQL toolkit for Python. We compared SQLite, PostgreSQL and MySQL using SQLAlchemy as well as compared a pure MySQL implementation against the results from SQLAlchemy. We conclude that, for our database design, PostgreSQL was the best database management system and that for the average SQL-user, SQLAlchemy is an excellent substitution to writing regular SQL.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores lean principles and visual management technology integration in facilities management systems. At the very core of the facilities management industry is the perception of strategically linking the facilities management department with the enterprise holistically. This has been an on-going development through recent years. The global recession of 2008 brought about socio-economic, socio-political and socio-technical constraints prompting world governments to establish leaner more efficient, value added initiatives. This trickled down to governments, universities and organisations globally. By embracing lean principles, visual management technologies, and establishing a lean visual management workplace the facilities management department within these organisations will establish a more strategic alliance with executive leadership. In turn achieving their goal of offering value based facilities management services. The overall aim of the research is to evaluate the potential of lean principles, specifically visual management technologies to improve efficiency, transparency, and value in developing a facilities management knowledge systems. A design science philosophy with an action research approach framework is presented. Combined with a Soft Systems Methodology approach applied to improve the case studies findings and establish the real life problem statement. The researcher applied Soft Systems Methodology 5E's of: efficacy, efficiency, effectiveness, ethically and elegantly, to the action learning curve. Qualitative research methods such as semi-structured and unstructured interviews, questionnaires, and field observation were conducted. The research case study is limited in scope to one UK university estates and property services departments' lean journey and their third party outsourced facilities management service provider. The research acknowledged that a lean visual workplace management system could be introduced in a service industry such as facilities management. However, the findings suggest that greater emphasis should be placed on organisation change management issues such as lack of trust, and resistance to change, concurrently, as part of the lean visual management journey. Nevertheless, the foundation of a lean visual facilities management learning environment was established.

Full text
Abstract:
Systems are developed to fulfill certain requirements. Several system design configurations usually can fulfill the technical requirements, but at different equivalent life-cycle costs. The problem is how to manipulate and evaluate different system configurations so that the required system effectiveness can be achieved at a minimum equivalent cost. It is also important to have a good definition of all the major consequences of each design configuration. For each alternative configuration considered, it is useful to know the number of units to deploy, the inventory and other logistic requirements, as well as the sensitivity of the system to changes in input variable values. An intelligent relational database management system is defined to solve the problem described. Table structures are defined to maintain the required data elements and algorithms are constructed to manipulate the data to provide the necessary information. The methodology is as follows: Customer requirements are analyzed in functional terms. Feasible design alternatives are considered and defined as system design configurations. The reliability characteristics of each system configuration are determined, initially from a system-level allocation, and later determined from test and evaluation data. A maintenance analysis is conducted to determine the inventory requirements (using reliability data) and the other logistic requirements for each design configuration. A vector of effectiveness measures can be developed for each customer, depending on objectives, constraints, and risks. These effectiveness measures, consisting of a combination of performance and cost measures, are used to aid in objectively deciding which alternative is preferred. Relationships are defined between the user requirements, the reliability and maintainability of the system, the number of units deployed, the inventory level, and other logistic characteristics of the system. A heuristic procedure is developed to interactively manipulate these parameters to obtain a good solution to the problem with technical performance and cost measures as criteria. Although it is not guaranteed that the optimal solution will be found, a feasible solution close to the optimal will be found. Eventually the user will have, at any time, the ability to change the value of any parameter modeled. The impact on the total system will subsequently be made visible.

Abstract:
Two computer simulation models were developed to address harvest system - stand assignment and wood flow variability problems in the southeast United States. The Harvest System Assignment (HSA) model is used to evaluate the impact of a particular stand assignment on harvest system effectiveness and is designed to assist with harvest system assignment decisions. Four general harvesting systems: manual, mechanized, shovel and cut-to-length can be modeled to harvest timber, from standing trees to processed logs loaded on to trucks. Model testing showed that as terrain, tract and system characteristics changed, the effectiveness of each of the four systems varied. The most effective system can be determined for any combination of terrain, tract and system characteristics. The model output shows production potential as well as cost per unit, and identifies the causes and magnitude of inefficiency. The Machine Allocation (MA) model is used to evaluate the potential of a given machine combination and is designed as a research tool to investigate the cause and impact of machine interactions. This model has a defined system structure and can incorporate up to five machines for each of three phases in the harvesting operation: felling, skidding and processing. Particular system configurations can be evaluated and possible improvements to machine combination determined. The HSA model is a widely applicable tool that will be available for industry in the southeastern United States. It has utility for training of personnel and for operational use. The MA model is a detailed tool that will be used in a research capacity to advance harvesting system management.

Abstract:
This thesis explores and evaluates a decision support system (DDS) for the management of desalination brine. The rapid uptake of desalination technologies to meet freshwater demands has led to producing a significant quantity of brine, which is a highly saline solution. Currently, the most popular brine management method in Western Australia (WA) is disposal by surface water discharge (into the ocean), deep-well injection or evaporation ponds. Brine disposal isn’t a long-term sustainable option due to the environmental impacts it can cause, such as salinisation. Brine treatment methods that reduce the liquid volume of brine partially or completely brine is still under development or aren’t currently economically viable. The DDS uses two multi-criteria analysis techniques, interval analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under hybrid information. The use of interval AHP gives decision-makers a reliable method of assigning appropriate weightings to the chosen criteria, using the relative importance between each criterion. The DDS uses TOPSIS to allow for different information types (crisp numbers, interval numbers, fuzzy triangular numbers representing linguistic terms) within the DDS. To showcase the DDS, a case study using 4 emerging brine treatment technologies, membrane distillation (MD), forward osmosis (FO), osmotically-assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) and eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) was developed. The results suggest that the most to least appropriate technology are MD. FO, EFC and OARO. Sensitivity analyses using a Monte Carlo simulation determined the influence of varying different criteria weightings on the TOPSIS process. MD was the most dominant appropriate technology with little confusion between FO, which was consistently ranked 2nd. Sensitivity analysis of the entire DDS requires further validation of the interval AHP.

Abstract:
More than 38% of the U.S. public workforce will likely retire by 2030, which may result in a labor shortage. Business leaders may adopt strategies to mitigate knowledge loss within their organizations by capturing knowledge in a knowledge management system (KMS). The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies that information technology (IT) managers use to develop and implement a KMS. The target population consisted of IT managers in a small-sized organization located in northwestern Florida who had implemented a KMS successfully. The conceptual framework for this study was organizational knowledge creation theory. The collection of public documents, execution of semistructured interviews with 5 qualified participants, literature on the topic, and member checking formed the determination of the findings of the study. Using triangulation and coding the data for emergent themes, 6 themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) training, (b) customer focus, (c) policy and governance, (d) leadership and management support, (e) communication and marketing, and (f) business process management. The application of the findings may contribute to social change by identifying strategies that leaders and IT managers from communities and government agencies use in implementing a KMS that may facilitate transparency and open flow of information to citizens, and allow access to timely, civic, and potentially life-enhancing information.

Kinder, Andrew M. K. "A model-based approach to System of Systems risk management." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27553.

Full text
Abstract:
The failure of many System of Systems (SoS) enterprises can be attributed to the inappropriate application of traditional Systems Engineering (SE) processes within the SoS domain, because of the mistaken belief that a SoS can be regarded as a single large, or complex, system. SoS Engineering (SoSE) is a sub-discipline of SE; Risk Management and Modelling and Simulation (M&S) are key areas within SoSE, both of which also lie within the traditional SE domain. Risk Management of SoS requires a different approach to that currently taken for individual systems; if risk is managed for each component system then it cannot be assumed that the aggregated affect will be to mitigate risk at the SoS level. A literature review was undertaken examining three themes: (1) SoS Engineering (SoSE), (2) M&S and (3) Risk. Theme 1 of the literature provided insight into the activities comprising SoSE and its difference from traditional SE with risk management identified as a key activity. The second theme discussed the application of M&S to SoS, providing an output, which supported the identification of appropriate techniques and concluding that, the inherent complexity of a SoS required the use of M&S in order to support SoSE activities. Current risk management approaches were reviewed in theme 3 as well as the management of SoS risk. Although some specific examples of the management of SoS risk were found, no mature, general approach was identified, indicating a gap in current knowledge. However, it was noted most of these examples were underpinned by M&S approaches. It was therefore concluded a general approach SoS risk management utilising M&S methods would be of benefit. In order to fill the gap identified in current knowledge, this research proposed a new model based approach to Risk Management where risk identification was supported by a framework, which combined SoS system of interest dimensions with holistic risk types, where the resulting risks and contributing factors are captured in a causal network. Analysis of the causal network using a model technique selection tool, developed as part of this research, allowed the causal network to be simplified through the replacement of groups of elements within the network by appropriate supporting models. The Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) was identified as a suitable method to represent SoS risk. Supporting models run in Monte Carlo Simulations allowed data to be generated from which the risk BBNs could learn, thereby providing a more quantitative approach to SoS risk management. A method was developed which provided context to the BBN risk output through comparison with worst and best-case risk probabilities. The model based approach to Risk Management was applied to two very different case studies: Close Air Support mission planning and the Wheat Supply Chain, UK National Food Security risks, demonstrating its effectiveness and adaptability. The research established that the SoS SoI is essential for effective SoS risk identification and analysis of risk transfer, effective SoS modelling requires a range of techniques where suitability is determined by the problem context, the responsibility for SoS Risk Management is related to the overall SoS classification and the model based approach to SoS risk management was effective for both application case studies.

Ferdous, Md Sadek. "Identity Management with Petname Systems." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Telematics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-9031.

Full text
Abstract:

In the first part of the thesis, we have focused on providing a brief overview of Petname Systems starting from the introductory concept of Entity, Identity and Identity Management with a brief description on different IdM architectures. We have found that the Petname Model is well suited to be integrated in the Personal SP Identity model. We also provided a brief description on Identity Theft and the Phishing attack with different attack techniques and defense mechanisms. Then we summarized the history and evolution of the Petname Model in one place. Previously it was scattered among several web articles. We have formally defined the properties of Petname Systems and explained how this set of properties can satisfy the essential security usability principles. It is our belief that if these properties are followed in developing applications based on the Petname Model, it will improve the user experience and improve overall security by removing security vulnerabilities related to poor usability. The thesis has also analyzed two available Petname-based applications for server identification management and shown that they represent an improvement in usability, but unfortunately do not satisfy all the specified Security Usability principles. In the second part, we have developed the UniPet, a Petname Model based application with similar functionalities of the Petname Tool and the TrustBar, that utilizes the concept of aiding user in identifying SP identities securely on their side. We have deployed several technologies to meet the complex level of interaction the UniPet asks for. We have provided a brief discussion on each of the technologies to better understand the UniPet architecture. We have also shown that the UniPet has been a major improvement on GUI and on the security usability issues over those two applications. The UniPet satisfies all the properties of a Petname System and thus is fully compliant with the Security Usability principles. We believe that the UniPet will provide the users with an improved and secure browsing experience.

Jollands, Stephen Edward. "Management control systems and sustainability." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/9554.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainability is humanity not over-consuming the resources available to them and thereby irreversibly depleting the levels of natural capital while at the same time ensuring an equitable and fair distribution, both within the current generation as well as across all future generations, of the resources available. Contemporary indicators suggest that we are currently far from achieving this state. Organisations that operate within our economies are responsible for the extraction of resources from the ecosphere at ever increasing levels as they pursue larger profits through growth. These organisations utilise their management control systems (MCS) to organise their operations and thereby moving humanity further away from achieving this state. Extant research at the intersection of sustainability and current MCS primarily focuses on this incompatibility. As a result to date there is sparse literature that specifically examines this intersection. Thus the aim of this research is to examine the potential for research at this intersection. In order to examine the potential for research at this intersection I conduct a longitudinal case study that investigates two processes through the use of actor-network theory as a theoretical lens. The first process seeks to examine MCS in the context of sustainability. Specifically I examine the process through which the case organisation develops a core value focusing on sustainability. I find that this process involves two parts. The first establishes a descriptive definition for the core value. The descriptive definition opens a space that enables the second part to occur. In the second part, actors within the case organisation experiment in order to try and understand what must be done to achieve this core value. Providing this understanding of how a core value develops contributes to the extant literature through highlighting how core values prompt search and discovery activities within an organisation. The second process seeks to examine whether a focus on MCS can extend our extant understandings of issues around sustainability. Thus, I examine the process, with a specific focus on the role of management controls, through which the case organisation attains and maintains legitimacy. I find that the role of the sustainability report within this process is to reaffirm the commitments of the relevant publics but it does so through avoiding any issue that is controversial in nature. Therefore the role of management controls differs in relation to whether they relate to issues that are more or less controversial. If they relate to a less controversial issue then their role, as is the case with the sustainability report, is to reaffirm the commitments of the relevant publics. If, however, they relate to a more controversial issue then their role is to identify emergent concerned groups and thereby expand or reduce organisation activity as appropriate. Further, I find that a number of different management controls are used to deploy a full range of potential legitimising strategies. These findings of the differing roles of management controls and the legitimising strategies that they are used to deploy contributes to the extant literature through providing a more nuanced understanding of the process organisations employ to attain or maintain legitimacy. By showing how core values prompt search and discovery activities within an organisation I find support for sustainability providing a good context within which to examine and further our understandings of MCS. By showing a more nuanced understanding of the process organisations employ to attain or maintain legitimacy I find support for a focus on MCS extending our extant understandings of issues around sustainability. Thus, while there is an incompatibility between current MCS and the state of sustainability, this thesis provides support for future research at this intersection. Specifically I advocate that this future research should utilise a broad range of approaches and investigate a wide range of issues. In this way I believe much needed knowledge may be developed as to how to enact the required change to move humanity towards a state of sustainability.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of different database management systems (DBMS) have been performed in order to identify and compare those which address requirements such as public domain licensing, free of charge, high product support, ADO .NET Entity Framework compatibility, good performance, referential integrity, among others. More than 20 existing database management systems have been selected as possible candidates. Qualitative analysis reduced that number to 4 candidates DBMSs (PostgreSQL, SQLite, Firebird and MySQL). Quantitative analysis has been used to test the performance of these 4 DBMSs while performing the most common structured query language (SQL) data manipulation statements (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE and SELECT). Referential integrity and easy to install were also evaluated for these 4 DBMSs. As results, Firebird is the most suitable DBMS which best addressed all desired requirements.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to design, simulate and synthesize a dynamic space controller system. The concept of space allocation and management can be applied to more than physical space. It may also be taken in the contexts of memory, network or bus management. The management and allocation of any space depends mostly on the twin factors of demand and availability. Time, the size and amount of space available, as well as the number of requests for the spaces, must also be considered. The proposed design has the capability to monitor multiple spaces for vacancies, length of time occupied and to dynamically track the number and location of available spaces. This system is easily programmed to adapt to the user’s application and is modular in design in order to facilitate expansion. The specific problem addressed in this work is a parking lot controller.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The way engineers and engineering companies do their work has significantly changed over the past twenty years. This is mainly due to the simultaneous development of computers (particularly personal computers) and software. Most engineers are likely to use several engineering application programs and mainstream software packages. Hence, information from one application must be capable of being transferred into other packages for further processing or analysing and reporting or documentation purposes. This thesis aims to investigate aspects of data management and applications integration in process engineering design. It proposes a new method and model for data storage, manipulation and representation, on which new process design environments may be based. Several aspects of integrated process design database systems are examined, including data models, data handling, program control and integration. A system called PREMIS has been developed which uses an object-oriented approach to data management. It utilises templates which mimic specification sheets used in process industry for defining objects in a design environment. The use of methods promotes a consistent look and feel to the tools in the environment. The application of PREMIS to a real process engineering design example illustrates the benefits of object-oriented techniques to the process systems and design community. Templates can be manipulated as entities. They are displayed on the screen where they serve as the data input device for design information. Data on the templates and stored in the database can be shared and accessed directly by design programs. The dynamic nature of the object definitions encourages experimentation with the new data types and methods. The system also aims to demonstrate the advantages of employing advanced integration features of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

In this thesis we performed an initial analysis of a single business process fromadministrative data management, with respect to identifying the need to bindauthenticated identities to actions at the different steps of the process. Based onthis analysis we proposed a new model for the business process. We evaluatedour model with different evaluation criteria, set during the initial phase. Basedon discussion with the stakeholders, we arrived at the conclusion that eventhough our proposed system solves a lot of privacy related problems for thestakeholders, in case of business processes, it is not easy to change the legacysystems. We also found out an interesting set of problems that can arise withsuch systems.
Abstract:
With the proliferation of inexpensive cameras and the availability of high-speed wired and wireless networks, networks of distributed cameras are becoming an enabling technology for a broad range of interdisciplinary applications in domains such as public safety and security, manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare. Today's live video processing systems on networks of distributed cameras, however, are designed for specific classes of applications. To provide a generic query processing platform for applications of distributed camera networks, we designed and implemented a new class of general purpose database management systems, the live video database management system (LVDBMS). We view networked video cameras as a special class of interconnected storage devices, and allow the user to formulate ad hoc queries over real-time live video feeds. In the first part of this dissertation, an Internet scale framework for sharing and dissemination of general sensor data is presented. This framework provides a platform for general sensor data to be published, searched, shared, and delivered across the Internet. The second part is the design and development of a Live Video Database Management System. LVDBMS allows users to easily focus on events of interest from a multitude of distributed video cameras by posing continuous queries on the live video streams. In the third part, a distributed in-memory database approach is proposed to enhance the LVDBMS with an important capability of tracking objects across cameras.

Abstract:
The operation of an efficient and integrated site management system is one of the problems that still requires a considerable amount of attention in most of the construction companies in U.K. This thesis describes the research I have undertaken on this problem and how a computer-aided construction management system can assist in solving the problem. The thesis has been divided into three sections according to the research. The first section describes the research I have undertaken as surveys on; the literature as an existing knowledge of efficient and integrated site management systems; what systems are applied on site and the degree of satisfaction from them; the facilities that can be provided by the available site management software. From the above surveys, the problem has been identified and the objectives established for the research. The second section of the thesis describes my development of a software model to facilitate collecting, processing and analyzing data from the site for producing control data and reports. The section also describes the integration of the model to the other construction management systems (i. e. estimating, planning, cashflow forecasting and valuation), as well as being self-contained. The last section of the thesis describes my research in investigating how well the model achieved the research objectives. This section described a number of case studies based as a demonstration of the model, its functions and mechanism, using slides and on-computer seminars. From this evaluation I have established a list of comments, some of them were used to modify the model or as conclusions and recommendations for any future research in this field.

Abstract:
Railway RAMS is an engineering discipline that integrates reliability, availability, maintainability and safety characteristics into an inherent design property through systems engineering. This research is to establish a systematic approach of RAMS management for the railway systems engineering through the establishment of the engineering concepts, methods, techniques and tools. For this purpose, the research focuses on three subjects and a case study. Firstly, this research provides a RAMS management systems included railway systems engineering and RAMS management processes so that railway organisations can decide a strategic policy, control functions and coordinate activities related to RAMS management. Secondly, this research provides railway risk assessment methods to assess all of the potential hazards that threaten the railway’s operational objectives and control them within the possible acceptable criteria. Thirdly, this research provides the method that develops RAMS performance specifications appropriate to the RAMS requirements and operational contexts in order to develop RAMS design and its acceptance criteria for implementing the detailed design and/or contract. Finally, this research presents a case study for the risk assessment, using the data collected from the railway industry to demonstrate the proposed risk assessment method and to investigate the RAMS performance of the railway systems and their major failure causes.
