Bertrand, Allison R., Michael S. Moore, and Ben A. Abbott. "System Management in Network-Based Telemetry Systems." International Foundation for Telemetering, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/606174.
Full textNetwork-based telemetry systems are increasingly being used to improve the flexibility and longevity of flight test systems. Modern network-based flight test systems utilize large numbers of devices including high-speed network switches, data acquisition devices, recorders, and telemetry interfaces, all of which must be managed in a coordinated fashion. The move to network-based testing provides the ability to build a standards-based System Management interface which can status and control a diverse set of devices. The benefits include the ability to easily tailor System Management tools to support many different styles of user interactions and to quickly integrate new types of devices. While the new capabilities presented by System Management are exciting, the very openness of the system presents challenges to ensure that future growth will be seamlessly supported. This paper will discuss issues encountered while implementing flight test System Management tools for a network-based telemetry system.

The Internet, as with networks in general, is increasingly present in our everyday lives. However, its use also highlights some of their limitations, leading researchers to create new network solutions in an attempt to anticipate and solve problems that may arise. These solutions require exhaustive tests before they become eligible for production. Several approaches can be taken to conduct such tests. Simulations are important as first approximations; however, they fail to capture the dynamics and unpredictability of a real environment. Emulations present an alternative, but fail to reproduce more complex scenarios. Experimentation facilities must therefore be deployed, to achieve a higher level of realism. These facilities, also referred as testbeds, involve high-complexity deployment and operation, falling into disuse once they arrive at a final product. Methods of managing these infrastructures must be developed in order to avoid this waste of resources for future tests. This dissertation focuses on the problems inherent to the management of these facilities, with a focus on their users. Different approaches in network testing must be studied and the different methodologies on experimentation must be collected. An application is developed to address this problem, enabling users to create their experiments and collect results in both an organized and effective manner.

Full textThis dissertation proposes an integration process and the implementation of quality management systems, environmental and safety policies, and occupational health. These systems are presently operating separately in the company. The company´s core business is the production of industrial gases and its internal policies establish that the integration process should take into consideration the culture of the organization and also the efforts already taken to move in this direction. The methodology applied for the systems integration management is under knowledge domain and it is being used by organizations and by the academy. It was selected and adopted by a skilled team assigned for this purpose, and it was defined that, instead of restructuring, adjustments would be made to existing systems. There are also comments about weak points identified in the program of implementation of isolated systems that should be considered for the integration process, as well as the needs that drive the integration and expectations related to responsiveness, scope of work, collected results and also the outcome in terms of cultural change. The strategy is considered relevant when deciding for systems integration and for the methodology Six Sigma, which is the tool that allows costs measurement and the implementation of the philosophy of continuous improvement to exceed customer´s expectations.

Full textThis paper discusses ongoing regulatory effects on efforts aimed at developing data infrastructures that assist test engineers in achieving information superiority and for maintaining their information, and on possible architectural frameworks for resolving the engineer’s need versus the regulatory requirements. Since current commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems are targeted primarily at business environments such as back office applications, financial sectors, and manufacturing, these COTS systems do not provide sufficient focus for managing the unique aspects of flight test data and associated artifacts (documents, drawings, pretest data, etc.). This paper presents our ongoing efforts for deploying a storage infrastructure independent enterprise data management system for maintaining vital up-to-date information and for managing the archival of such data.

Obsolescence mitigation is an increasingly important aspect of large systems development & maintenance that has often only been considered once obsolescence is imminent. For long lifecycle systems, this has become a major concern as the lifecycles of the components that are encompassed within these systems are often far shorter - up to ten times shorter - than the overall system lifecycle. Many defense systems can be characterized in this manner and therefore require obsolescence mitigation approaches to ensure the continuing ability for the system to perform and evolve. Current system-level obsolescence mitigation practices make recommendations for designing new systems to slow the onset of obsolescence and make the system more flexible when change for obsolescence is required. However, currently fielded systems were often not designed with this in mind. Other obsolescence mitigation techniques focus only on the approach to mitigating component-level obsolescence locally without examining the impact of the change on the system as a whole. This thesis combines the recommended approaches for obsolescence mitigation, the experience and lessons learned for obsolescence mitigation on a real-world case study system gained from interviews with key subject matter experts, along with systems engineering techniques for dealing with engineering change in systems to develop a robust systems engineering and management approach for obsolescence in large complex systems. The thesis provides the reader with a flow chart and a clustered DSM of the tasks along with a checklist that could be used with this obsolescence engineering and management approach.

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to help Spotify to improve their internal change management process in their financial system. The work was done by charting the internal teams that create, influence and use data in the company’s financial system. Furthermore, the working methods of the different teams were compared and differences in how they work were identified. Our findings show that there are both different working processes and attitudes between the teams. This creates challenges in the change management process, especially in cross-functional projects. Conclusions from the results are presented as suggestions. These may help to improve the change management process in cross-functional projects at Spotify: Implement a coordinator role, which works as a single point of contact for everything that is related to changes in the financial system. The new role helps to improve the distribution of information. Create a new team that is responsible for all changes that affect the financial system. A new team reduces dependencies betweenthe different teams. Introduce cross-functional project managers who receive dedicated resources to implement projects where multiple teams are involved. The project manager can then take full responsibility for the entire process. Make sure the effectiveness/productivity of all involved teams is measured by the value created for the whole value chain rather than when their respective part has been delivered. Have a workshop (1-5 days) in which participants from the teams that needs to integrate components work together. This will be an effective way to minimize the waiting time between the teams. Create a service level agreement between the different teams, so that each team can efficiently plan their resources and know what to expect from other teams.

Full textIn the first part of the thesis, we have focused on providing a brief overview of Petname Systems starting from the introductory concept of Entity, Identity and Identity Management with a brief description on different IdM architectures. We have found that the Petname Model is well suited to be integrated in the Personal SP Identity model. We also provided a brief description on Identity Theft and the Phishing attack with different attack techniques and defense mechanisms. Then we summarized the history and evolution of the Petname Model in one place. Previously it was scattered among several web articles. We have formally defined the properties of Petname Systems and explained how this set of properties can satisfy the essential security usability principles. It is our belief that if these properties are followed in developing applications based on the Petname Model, it will improve the user experience and improve overall security by removing security vulnerabilities related to poor usability. The thesis has also analyzed two available Petname-based applications for server identification management and shown that they represent an improvement in usability, but unfortunately do not satisfy all the specified Security Usability principles. In the second part, we have developed the UniPet, a Petname Model based application with similar functionalities of the Petname Tool and the TrustBar, that utilizes the concept of aiding user in identifying SP identities securely on their side. We have deployed several technologies to meet the complex level of interaction the UniPet asks for. We have provided a brief discussion on each of the technologies to better understand the UniPet architecture. We have also shown that the UniPet has been a major improvement on GUI and on the security usability issues over those two applications. The UniPet satisfies all the properties of a Petname System and thus is fully compliant with the Security Usability principles. We believe that the UniPet will provide the users with an improved and secure browsing experience.
