Yeoman, Ruth. From Traditional to Innovative Multi-Stakeholder Mutuals. Edited by Jonathan Michie, Joseph R. Blasi, and Carlo Borzaga. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199684977.013.34.

Full text
Abstract:
The UK Coalition Government’s public-sector transformation initiatives produced a growing number of public-service mutuals. Despite this, there is little understanding of the transition experiences of such organizations, and associated processes of organizational change. This chapter describes the case of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH), an affordable housing provider, and now a dual constituency mutual, jointly owned by staff and tenants. A key characteristic of the change was the need for individuals to craft new self-identities by holding in tension the identity of being a co-owner with that of being a public-service worker or tenant. Smith and Graetz’s (2011) ‘paradox management’ was used to investigate new values arising from the proliferation of dualities. Although the stresses of change were not avoided, the co-owners of RBH created new capabilities with the potential to, not only sustain the organization, but also increase the resilience and innovative capacities of the communities it exists to serve.

Newton, Travis. Orchestra Management Handbook. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197550670.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Written for those who are contemplating jumping into the orchestra management realm, this Orchestra Management Handbook will provide a significant head-start for those entering this complicated, exciting, and challenging line of work. A multitude of challenges have faced orchestra managers since the beginning of the art form, and they will continue to face those who make the orchestra enterprise their life’s work, alongside new challenges that will arise in the 21st century. Whether short-term, long-term, internal, external, or existential, an intentional approach to building, maintaining, and sustaining relationships must be at the core of the orchestra manager’s daily routine. Each chapter of this handbook provides practical strategies, tools, and a variety of resources to those who work in the orchestra management field, with an emphasis on relationship building throughout. Illustrative case studies highlighting innovative practices being undertaken at orchestras across the country are regularly featured, providing the reader an opportunity to learn from the experiences of others. Additionally, each chapter concludes with a series of discussion questions to ponder, teasing out some of the chapter’s key concepts. Few arts organizations have more potential for building community than orchestras—with a typically large permanent complement of artists, a high volume of performances, and a need for large audiences, building community should be central to the internal and external operations of the modern orchestra.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter “New Vistas in Perioperative Pain Management” provides an overview of analgesics for acute pain that have been recently introduced and that are in development as well as a discussion of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs that make use of multimodal analgesic regimens. It reviews the innovation in analgesics that has focused on new formulations and uses of older compounds including oral, intravenous, and transmucosal agents. It describes the potential role of mu-opioid g-protein modulators as novel opioids with an improved adverse effect profile as well as a novel opioid with the potential for lower abuse potential. It also explains the use of analgesic regimens and pathways in ERAS programs to reduce recovery times and length of hospital stays.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the past decade, the emergence and pervasiveness of mobile technology across all socioeconomic groups in most parts of the world has enabled myriad opportunities to engage trauma survivors in novel approaches to treatment, self-management, and symptom monitoring. While the World Wide Web has continued its explosive growth, the availability of mobile phones has kept pace. These sophisticated devices are always on and always accessible, enabling previously unheard-of opportunities for patient engagement, connection with providers and systems, objective measures of functioning and change, and innovative enhancements to evidence-based treatment tools. The potential for mobile technology to ease delivery of medical care has led to the release of hundreds of thousands of software and hardware applications (“apps”). The National Center for PTSD has been at the forefront of app development for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including PTSD Coach. Various publicly available, free apps are described.
