Abstract:
Information System development involves various activities; the process of developing information systems is considered to be the production of a series of documents. The information derived from the activities of the life cycle needs to be stored in a way that will facilitate the carrying out of subsequent activities. That is, information must be stored with a consistent, semantically rich, flexible, and efficient structure that will make it accessible for use by various tools employed in carrying out the development process. In this research, knowledge base management system (KBMS) to manage the information created by the information system development process was designed and implemented. Several contemporary popular knowledge representation schemes can be managed conveniently by this KBMS, which utilized efficient database techniques to facilitate fast retrieval and traversal of the underlying semantic inheritance net and frame knowledge structure. Inference and logic deduction capability was made a part of the static knowledge structure to further extend the functionality of the KBMS. Furthermore, a specially designed relational database management system was implemented and interfaced with the KBMS to alleviate the possibility of a storage saturation problem and to facilitate the storage of detailed exclusive information of terms defined in the knowledge base. Models that are applicable to various information system development activities were identified and stored in the knowledge base. The aggregation of those models is, in fact, a conceptual non-procedural language that provides a concise descriptive framework to help the user gather and manage information derived from various activities during the information system development process. The knowledge base, the language, and several knowledge-base related tools were used by more than seventy graduate students in a case study for a system analysis and design course. An information system methodology specifically tailored for this knowledge base supported environment was proposed and applied in a simplified case to illustrate the process of how a database-centered information system can be derived from the initial strategic planning phase. The methodology explored and made use of the storage structure of the closely coupled knowledge base and database. Finally, future research direction was identified.

There are several technological solutions available in the market to help organizations with information security breach detection and prevention such as intrusion detection and prevention systems, antivirus software, firewalls, and spam filters. There is no doubt in the fact that significant progress has been made in the technological side of information security. However, when we study causes of information security breaches, we find that a significant number are caused by non-technical reasons such as social engineering, theft of computing device or portable hard drive, human behavior, and human error. This leads us to conclude that information security should not be viewed through technology perspective only. Instead, a more holistic approach is required. This thesis provides a systems approach towards information security management and include technological, management and social aspects. This thesis starts with introduction especially background and motivation of the author, followed by literature research. Next, Enterprise Information Security Management Framework is presented leading to estimation of an organization's information security management maturity-level. Finally, conclusion and potential future work are presented.

Abstract:
The Internet and information systems have enabled businesses to reduce costs, attain greater market reach, and develop closer business partnerships along with improved customer relationships. However, using the Internet has led to new risks and concerns. This research provides a management perspective on the issues confronting CIOs and IT managers. It outlines the current state of the art of information security, the important issues confronting managers, security enforcement measure/techniques, and potential threats and attacks. It develops a model for classification of threats and control measures. It also develops a scheme for probabilistic evaluation of the impact of security threats with some illustrative examples. It involves validation of information assets and probabilities of success of attacks on those assets in organizations and evaluates the expected damages of these attacks. The research outlines some suggested control measures and presents some cost models for quantifying damages from these attacks and compares the tangible and intangible costs of these attacks. This research also develops a risk management system for information systems security incidents in five stages: 1- Resource and application value analysis, 2- Vulnerability and risk analysis, 3- Computation of losses due to threats and benefits of control measures, 4- Selection of control measures, and 5- Implementation of alternatives. The outcome of this research should help decision makers to select the appropriate control measure(s) to minimize damage or loss due to security incidents. Finally, some recommendations for future work are provided to improve the management of security in organizations.

Abstract:
As the usage of both BIM (Building Information Modelling) and 3D-GIS (Three-Dimensional Geographic Information Systems) has increased within the field of urban development and construction, so has the interest in connecting these two tools.  One possibility of integration is the potential of visualising BIM models together with other spatial data in 3D. Another is to be able to perform spatial 3D analyses on the models. Both of these can be achieved through use of GIS software. This study explores how integration of BIM and GIS could look. The goal was to perform typical GIS analyses in 3D on BIM models. Previous research points towards some success within the field through use of the indicated standard format for each tool – IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) for BIM and CityGML (City Geographic Markup Language) for GIS. Transformation between the formats took place through use of the BIM software Revit, the transformation tool FME and the GIS software ArcGIS. A couple of reviewed applications of GIS analyses were chosen for testing on the converted models – indoor network analysis, visibility analysis and spatial analysis for 3D buildings. The input data in the study was several BIM models, both models created for real-life usage and others that only function as sample data within the different software. From the results of the practical work it can be concluded that a simple, automated and full-scale integration does not seem to be within reach quite yet. Most transformations between IFC and CityGML failed to some extent, especially the more detailed and complex ones. In some test cases, the file could not be imported into ArcGIS and in others geometries were missing or existing even though they should not. There were also examples where geometries had been moved during the process. As a consequence of these problems, most analyses failed or did not give meaningful results. A few of the original analyses did give positive results. Combining (flawed) CityGML models with other spatial data for visualisation purposes worked rather well. Both the shadow volume and sightline analyses did also get reasonable results which indicates that there might be a future for those applications. The obstacles for a full-scale integration identified during the work were divided into four different categories. The first is BIM usage and routines where created models need to be of high quality if the final results are to be correct. The second are problems concerning the level of detail, especially the lack of common definitions for the amount of details and information. The third category concerns the connection between local and global coordinate systems where a solution in form of updates to IFC might already be in place. The fourth, and largest, category contains those surrounding the different formats and software used. Here, focus should lie on the transformation between IFC and CityGML. There are plenty of possible, future, work concerning these different problems. There is also potential in developing own tools for integration or performing different analyses than those chosen for this thesis.

Abstract:
Accounting is an old discipline inherent to any business. Accounting is divided into Financial Accounting (FA) and Management Accounting (MA). Financial Accounting focuses on the pure processing of the economic data. Management Accounting focuses on the decision-making aspects of the accounting. Accounting industry has been tremendously transformed in the past two decades due to the implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. These systems integrate and unify an organisation’s business functions and processes into one complex computer system. Previous research suggests that the ERP systems’ main functionality primarily addresses the issues of Financial Accounting and much less the issues of Management Accounting. The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying factors behind the application of the Management Accounting Techniques through the ERP systems and to suggest a further development in the field. Five large Swedish companies were examined through the comparative case studies with semi-structured interviews. This study discovered that MATs were mostly implemented through spreadsheets, BI systems and custom-built software, i.e. outside of the ERP systems. The main reasons were inflexibility and standard design of the ERP systems, that did not fully suit the companies. Additionally, the customization of the ERP systems would be too costly when other tools, such as BI systems or spreadsheets, provided better functionality to a better price. The conclusion of this study is that it is impossible to build a universal ERP system that would suit all kind of companies, however, ERP systems can serve as a common base and a transaction engine for the MA. ERP systems can provide a data structure for the analysis parameters crucial to MA, such as profit centre, cost centre, unit, and other dimensionality aspects. Spreadsheets and BI systems win the MA battle by providing the flexibility, user-friendliness and the acceptable price, required by the users. Therefore, ERP systems must provide good integration possibilities with other software. One can further speculate if ERP system providers choose not to deliver flexible and visually appealing products, since they benefit from the income that the customer education and the customization of an ERP system implies.

Abstract:

The construction industry is often accused of beingfragmented and inefficient in nature due to the lack ofcontinuity and repetitive behaviour in projects. For many yearsinformation technology has been put forward as a solution. But,despite the potentials, little gains have been harvested by thedevelopment of computerised information systems (IS). Theoverall aim of this research is to determine if a moreaccessible and clearly described housing development processcould be enabled by an information system, which in itself, could improve both individual and project (group) performance. Two research questions are being put forward; first, will aprocess-oriented IS positively impact on the performance ofproject managers and in particular on the performance ofproject groups? Second, how important is a process-orientedinformation management process for the success of the IS? Toanswer these questions an action research approach with largeinfluences of survey research has been adopted. The researchconsists of two phases; a process orientation within a largeSwedish housing development company and a survey of projectmanagers¡¦ attitudes towards a new process-orientedIS also including a study of dependencies found among variablesof information system success (ISS). To enable a verificationof the success of the IS an assessment instrument - hypothesismodel - for evaluating ISS was developed. The assessmentinstrument was built on DeLone and McLean's (1992) ISS modeland extended to include measures of information managementprocess quality (process quality). The hypothesis model wasthen tested empirically with a questionnaire survey. Astatistical test was also performed to test the hypothesisedrelationships of the augmented ISS model. In summarising thefindings of the data analysis, it is evident that the new ISreceived unexpected support from the respondents. The findingsalso indicate that the collected and analysed data show supportfor numerous of the hypothesised relationships of ISS.Conclusions are drawn that confirm the presence of a processquality measure for assessing ISS. From a practitioner'sperspective, this research suggests a course of action forprocess oriented organisational development. It also indicatesbeneficiary useof a process focus in IS development.

Abstract:
In the era of digitalization, clinical trials have often been left behind in adoption of automation and cost-efficiency offered by computerized systems. Poor implementations, lack of technical experience, and inertia caused by overlapping old and new procedures have failed to prove the business value of data management systems. This has led into settling for inadequate tools for data management, leaving many studies struggling with traditional approaches involving heavy paper usage further complicating the management and drastically slowing preparations for final analysis. This Master’s Thesis presents Genesis, a web-based clinical data management system development for the LIRA-study, which will take place in Finland and Sweden. Genesis has been developed to address the aforementioned obstacles with adopting information technology solutions in an agile manner with the integration of security concerns. Furthermore, Genesis has been designed to offer the long term value through reusability in terms of effortless portability for upcoming studies and interconnectability with web-enabled legacy system and handheld devices via a uniform interface. In addition to representing the design, implementation and evaluation of Genesis, the future prospects of Genesis are discussed, noting the preliminary interest of utilizing Genesis in additional studies, including the world’s largest type-1 diabetes study

Abstract:
In order to manage the content of multimedia data, the content must be annotated. Although any user-defined annotation is acceptable, it is preferable if systems agree on the same annotation format. MPEG-7 is a widely accepted standard for multimedia content annotation. However, in MPEG-7, semantically identical metadata can be represented in multiple ways due to lack of precise semantics in its XML-based syntax. Unfortunately this prevents metadata interoperability. To overcome this problem, MPEG-7 standard is translated into an ontology. In this thesis, MPEG-7 ontology is used on top and the given user-defined ontologies are attached to the MPEG-7 ontology via a user friendly interface, thus building MPEG-7 based ontologies automatically. Our proposed system is an ontology-based multimedia information management framework due to its modular architecture, ease of integrating with domain specific ontologies naturally and automatic harmonization of MPEG-7 ontology and domain-specific ontologies. Integration with domain specific ontologies is carried out by enabling import of domain ontologies via a user-friendly interface which makes the system independent of application domains.

Abstract:
Three-tiered enterprise GIS architecture offers a robust, efficient, and secure mechanism as a potential revolution to disaster management systems. This paper addresses the severe limitations of existing disaster management systems and proposes an integrated management information system as an alternative. The value of such a 3-tiered enterprise GIS is its ability to function as reliable and efficient system during a disaster. Issues related to data storage, handling, timely distribution of processing power, efficient retrieval and dissemination of information, and data security against unauthorized access have to addressed using the state-of-the-art technology. Recent advancements in (1) standardized data specification, (2) middleware services, and (3) web-enabled distributed computing provide key resources to design and implement a tool of unprecedented flexibility and capacity for disaster management. This paper presents the critical details of such a system.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the last decade, the use of computers has proliferated the industrial arena in South Africa. Due to frequent changes in computer programs and developments in the computing field, users have often been adversely affected. Users experience problems with computer programs that are not user friendly. Usability is about satisfying the user needs by allowing the user to accomplish their goals quickly, efficiently and easily. Thus it is crucial that industries invest in computer programs that offer optimum usability. In this research an attempt is made to provide a framework for methodology that can be used to test and evaluate usability in the Transwerk Risk Management Information System, that is Computer Assisted Risk Management Systems (CARMS). I first consider the difference between unusable and usable programs. Usability properties are then identified including properties enhancing effectiveness, efficiency, flexibility, laemability and attitude of the computer program. The CARMS components or modules and users were identified. Usability problems were identified that cause the users to be selective and discouraged to use other components of CARMS. To further verified and address the usability problems identified, the whole program needs to be tested and evaluated. The methodology was laid for how to do usability testing and evaluation in computer program that are currently in use like CARMS. Benefits and limitations of testing and evaluating usability were detailed in this research. It is recommended that, testing and evaluating usability should be done to prevent errors, dissatisfaction and to improve usability of the CARMS program.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rockfall Management System developed for Tennessee DOT (TennRMS)integrates a customized rockfall risk rating system, web-based GIS application, and rockfall database to provide a robust single interface for interacting with rock slope information. The system should prove to be a valuable tool for the proactive management of rock slopes. The most important use of the system will be to identify and prioritizing rock slopes with the greatest potential for rockfall in order to provide decision makers with all the necessary information they need to plan remediation efforts. Over time, TennRMS can be used to track costs and effectiveness of different remediation methods used on problem rock slopes. Three papers have been developed for publication in peer reviewed journals. The papers describe the work done in support of developing Tennessee's Rockfall Management System (TennRMS) and its components. The system can be described by its conceptual framework and actual implemented components. Asset management incorporating risk & decision analysis and knowledge management makes up the conceptual framework. The system components include a field data collection system using PDA's, a rockfall database and a web-based GIS interface. The papers articulate the development and implementation of the various components and to provide a detailed review of rockfall management systems as implemented over the past 15 years.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The use of Information Systems (ISs) has been widely accepted and proven to increase the service quality in many organizations. Academic libraries have embraced the use of ISs and have implemented them to perform different activities. The efficient utilization and management of ISs in libraries will help libraries to derive maximum benefit from adopted ISs. The research used the DeLone and McLean (2003) IS success theory to determine the impact of IS management on the quality of the IS, the use of the IS and the benefits gained. The researcher used nine (30%) of the thirty university libraries which are members of the consortium of academic and research libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) - an association of libraries that help with the IS and electronic resource use of member libraries. A mixed method approach with questionnaires, interviews combined with content analysis of the university websites was used to gather data. Findings indicated that academic libraries in Ghana are making use of some ISs including; ILS, DAM, social media, websites, among others, amidst a number of challenges. The research also revealed that the management of ISs affects the quality thereof. Quality of ISs affects use, and use affects the benefits gained from use. The researcher proposed an IS management standard guideline which Ghanaian academic libraries could adopt for using and managing ISs to enhance efficiency and better service delivery.

Full text
Abstract:
The technology revolution has transformed the way in which many organisations do their business. The resultant information systems have increased the decision making powers of executives, leading to increased effectiveness and ultimately to improved product delivery. The process of information systems development is, however, complex. Furthermore, it has a poor track record in terms of on-time and within-budget delivery, but more significantly in terms of low user acceptance frequently attributable to poor user requirements specification. Consequently, much attention has been given to the process of requirements elicitation, with both researchers and businessmen seeking new, innovative and effective methods. These methods usually involve large numbers of participants who are drawn from within the client and developer organisations. This is a financially costly characteristic of the requirements elicitation process. Besides information systems, the technology revolution has also brought sophisticated communication technologies into the marketplace. These communication technologies allow people to communicate with one another in a variety of different time and space scenarios. An important spin-off of this is the ability for people located in significantly different geographical locations to work collaboratively on a project. It is claimed that this approach to work has significant cost and productivity advantages. This study draws the requirements elicitation process into the realm of collaborative work. Important project management, communication, and collaborative working principles are examined in detail, and a model is developed which represents these issues as they pertain to the requirements elicitation process. An empirical study (conducted in South Africa) is performed in order to examine the principles of the model and the relationships between its constituent elements. A model of geographically distributed requirements elicitation (GDRE) is developed on the basis of the findings of this investigation. The model of GDRE is presented as a 3-phased approach to requirements elicitation, namely planning, implementation, and termination. Significantly, the model suggests the use of interviews, structured workshops, and prototyping as the chief requirements elicitation methods to be adopted in appropriate conditions. Although a detailed study of communications technology was not performed, this thesis suggests that each individual GDRE implementation requires a different mix of communication technologies to support its implementation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Ensuring the delivery of an investment is crucial for organisations as significant amounts of operating and capital expenditure is spent on information systems. Regrettably, many organisations today have no accurate techniques for forecasting and warranting the success of information system projects and many rely on the traditional project management triple constraint criteria alone, which encapsulate time, cost, and quality. Many chief executive officers (CEOs), chief information officers (CIOs) and other executives have difficulty in justifying their investments and return on investment (ROI) in information systems. Since the 1970s many articles have been written and much research conducted on the topic of information system project success. However, there is still no consensus on an agreed upon definition and robust methodology to measure the success of information system projects (ISPs). This research attempted to determine if organisations measure the success of their ISPs. In addition, the researcher aimed to pinpoint what key success factors and critical success criteria organisations use, and how these are applied to measure information system project success (ISPS). To reach these objectives, qualitative research was conducted by means of a study of the literature on the topic, a pilot survey, and semi-structured interviews in order to gather expert opinions and information pertaining to the measurement of ISPS in industry. It was found that most project managers and companies still rely on the traditional triple constraint to determine the success of their information system projects. Moreover, this phenomenon exists due to a lack of knowledge on the topic, top management buy-in, time and resources, and a perception that the costs to get a measurement system in place outweigh the benefits to be gained from it.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the different types of information security management decision making that take place within an organisation. It identifies how the construction of an information security management system (ISMS) alters in order to respond to different organisational variations, identifies the resource implications of making these alterations, and describes how the process of embedding an ISMS into the operational fabric of an organisation changes the way in which information security is managed. This thesis responds to the following "real world" problem: quantifying the type of resource needed to develop and maintain an ISMS is difficult because little is known about how ISMS are structured and how they respond to organisational variations. Documentation only considers ISMS in terms of its response to information security risk. As a result, not only is it difficult to quantify the resource required to manage information security, but it is also difficult to measure and compare the effectiveness of ISMS. This real world problem is paralleled by the following academic problem: ISMS theory is largely based on the views of practitioners and has not been augmented by systematic objective organisational research. In addition, existing information security management research shows that there are clear synergies with organisational sociology, organisation theory and cybernetics but these synergies have not been extensively reviewed. As a result, there is no specific academic platform from which to develop a theory of ISMS design. In response to these real-world and academic problems, this research contributes to the development of organisation theory relevant to information security management and is based on systematic organisational investigation. As a conclusion to this research, a theory of ISMS design is developed that has synergy with theories of organisational sociology, organisation theory and cybernetics but that also shows clear characteristics of its own.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2007
With technology advancing, more and more people turn to the World Wide Web to conduct business. This may include buying and selling on the Web, advertising and monitoring of business activities. There is a big need for software and systems that enable remote monitoring and controlling of business activities. The Mechatronics Research Group of the Faculty of Engineering, Information and Communication Technology at the Central University of Technology, Free State, has identified a similar need. This research group has created an Automated Manufacturing System around which research topics revolve. They want to monitor this Automated Manufacturing System from remote locations like their offices or, if possible, from home. The Remote Information Management (RIM) System was developed, using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) Methodology. The reasons why this methodology was used, is because it is the best to use in a changing environment, when the system needs to be developed very quickly and when most of the data is already available. This is a good description of the Automated Manufacturing System’s environment. The RAD methodology consists of four stages: Requirements Planning, User Design, Rapid Construction and Transition. Project Management is used throughout these stages to ensure that the project goes according to plan. Development of the RIM system went through all four stages and project management was applied. The final system consisted of a Web Page with Web Camera views of the Automated Manufacturing System. The application that was developed using National Instruments LabVIEW, Microsoft Visual C++, and Microsoft Excel, is embedded in this Web Page. This application is called a Virtual Instrument (VI). The VI shows real-time data from the Automated Manufacturing System. Control over the VI can be granted and will allow the remote user to create reports on how many different products was produced and system downtimes. A system like the RIM System has advantages in the business world. It can enable telecommuting and will allow employees and managers to monitor (and even control) manufacturing systems, or any system connected to a PLC, from remote locations.

All kinds of Information Systems have been developed to satisfy people’s different needs. However, not every organization has the ability to build an information system. Therefore, organizations outsource their information systems. As time goes by, system requirements vary, and some problems may occur on system. The key system related knowledge does not transfer accompanying with the information system that results in organization’s potential loss. In the knowledge economy era, how to manage the key knowledge and technology well have became the most clamant issues. Therefore, we construct a framework of knowledge management system of outsourced information system. We also construct a prototype system based on Web and XML technology to help transfer relevant knowledge successfully in the process of outsourcing for follow-up development and maintenance. We interviewed the developers and project managers to evaluate the prototype system in a real case. They gave good evaluation of supplied functions. They believed that the knowledge management system could help them store and acquire knowledge more systematically, reduce the searching time, and find suitable person rapidly.

Modern IT technique and broadband network infrastructure make on-line games become one of the high value-added industries. Especially when the market of the broadband network grew rapidly since 2000, not only the market of the on-line games increased in 10 megabyte speed, it also becomes the most favorite entertainment to all ages. Extra information will be adopted during the game playing that makes the users confused to filter and organize the information from the overwhelming Internet information. In order to solve this problem, a system is proposed to let user get the valued knowledge and organize from the Internet via the information fetch. This thesis designs an information objects searching mechanism based on the method of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to build the personal game knowledge-searching infrastructure as the basis of the game knowledge-searching system design. Valuable game knowledge could be obtained by this personal game knowledge-searching system. Since this system is not restricted by the source or the property of the information, it could be applied in the other system.
